A city scientist doctor Uma sankar has successfully developed a kit to diagnose mastitis in cattle. :idea:
The initial evaluation in 1,200 samples kits manufactured by the Institute of Animal HEALTH AND Veterinary Biologicals-IAH&VB and tested all over the state has shown positive results. :D
For the uninitiated mastitis is one of the severe diseases found in dairy animals causing drastic reduction in milk production. The delay in diagnosis delays appropriate treatment in rural areas. :(
Uma Sankar of Sri Chithira Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology developed this kit which consists of a vial for culturing bacteria, syringe, sterile swab, needles, and nine bottles. Eight of them contain eight different antibiotics, and one control. Milk is mixed with broth and injected into the vials that turn blue. The vials with bacteria which are resistant to the antibiotic turn colorless where as the vials in which the bacteria are killed remain blue. It is indeed useful in rural areas. It is easy to use and the result is fast. The kit is cost effective compare to the prevalent tests. The conventional tests cost Rs. 200/- which ordinary farmer cannot afford. Once manufactured on a commercial scale would cost only Rs. 50/ only. :D
