The prestigious Trinity College of London will felicitate Indian musicians for their yeoman service. L. Subramaninan, Ilayaraja, Harris Jayaraj, Ganeshkumar, Manisharma, and VS Narasimhan will be felicitated in a function that is to be held in Chennai on September 1st 2010.

It is worth mentioning here that noted film music composer Ilayaraja has completed a music course at the Trinity College of London several years ago. Likewise, Harris Jayaraj was also a student of this prestigious institution.

Murali had a long career in his short life. He had two basic qualities required to be successful in Tamil cinema. Talent and Likeability. He had the skills to be the leading man and a baby face that you just cannot not like. Apart from that he always maintained his humility and modesty and lived a scandal-free life as far as I know. In so many ways he was a model actor. Murali was never the top-tier actor commercially, but most of the Tamil film audience is grieving his passing. That says something.

With a feeling of disbelief from the sudden loss of a young life I travelled back to the 1980s and listened to some of the beautiful melodies from Murali's films. While the melodies were caressing me softly the knowledge that this eternally youthful actor is no longer with us gave me a feeling of disillusionment. Like a chunk of my past was simply plucked out of my life and thrown away out of my sight forever. That is the best I can put in words. We often jokingly refer to Murali's film roles which were much younger than his age but suited him perfectly. It turns out that Murali was truly blessed with eternal youth. We will never get to see him age.

Today's pick was filmed on Murali and Pratyuksha who also left the world too soon. Kadal Pookkal, in my opinion, was the best film by Bharathiraja in the last ten years.

The sweet and delicate yet bright voice has gone silent. Swarnalatha was an identifiable voice in an ocean of voices. She was an expressive and versatile singer. Soft love songs, cute teenage songs, item songs, haunting sad songs, folk tunes,... she has sung them all and have sung them true to the genre and with emotion. That is who is called a playback singer. Swarnalatha was one of the last of the kind of playback singers of that traditional mold. Most of the other female singers of that kind have either retired from playback singing or have passed on.

For someone born in Kerala and raised in Karnataka Swarnalatha's Tamil was flawless. The melodies in her honey-soaked voice are a delight. But the rapidly changing trend of TFM and its fancy for fast beats and hip-hop music did not do her any favors. She still was a trooper. She kept conquering the trend and marching ahead until her health failed her.

Swarnalatha's stay may have been short. But because of her the air is sweeter and TFM richer forever.

Chandrabose remains one of the well respected composers here at tfmpage.

After the 1980s Chandrabose's music was not in the mainstream. Wish he had stayed with film music for he would have composed so many more popular melodies. Also, as mentioned before in the hub, when it comes to "repeating the original melody in remake movies", Chandrabose is no MSV.

nAdOdikkAtRu was composed by Shyam with that sweet 'vaishAka sandhyE'. A Mohanlal-Srinivasan cult classic by Sathyan Anthikkad where these two are cheated to go to "Chennai Dubai" in arabic costume :-)

When remade as 'kadhA nAyakan' in Thamizh, Chandrabose re-used the song as "poo pooththadhu, yAr pArththadhu' (same tune, poorer orchestration). I haven't seen the movie but only some posters with Pandiyarajan / SV Sekhar in middle eastern costume.
