This thread is dedicated for hubbers to discuss things on stories. No Yes,do jump into conclusions that this is a chatting place. However, here we have restricted talks about sectors of tales,yarn-spinning,good forums, blogs, stories of the past, controversies or quarterly story writing contests, tips and so on.As both tamizh/english writers are availble here,we can bilingually talk about that.Let us intricately carve the regulations on the thread and start soon.
Regards,
Venkatesh R.K.

Many popular dramas (serious like Cho's, YGM's, etc and comedy like Crazy Mohan's & S.Ve.Sekar's dramas) are available now as VCDs & DVDs. So why would ppl bother watching a drama on Pothigai - with the same set, same curtains, same furniture & props, same echoing studio sound, and same actors?

:curse:

try buying a 12th standard tamizh text book which has 8 wonderful essays.in the third essay by s.vaiyaburi pillai, entitled kavithai, explains what is a poem, more specifically marabu kavithai.he says that all english poets have not defined poetry, but have just written poems on poetry.the definitions he quoted were rendered by coleridge, keats, ruskin, wordsworth if i'm right.he also gives one poem by bavanathi munivar wich says as cooking makes the tastes of different patharthams into one nice to lick flavour,so should a poem reneder a sweet tone coupled by a sensible choice of words.finally he ends the essay with a kambar poetry.
i should have not given that book(in toto 54kgs of four of my classmates)in exchange to a paltry Rs.5 per kg.

Not sure if I will be able to do that.
It is one of those thin lines.
I would like to claim that I am not interested in any modern (!) poems without a rhythm. But I will myself furnish examples of good poems that squash the rule.
But in general, rhythm makes one curtial the tendency of just writing whatever occurs: a flash of thought/idea/imagery/piece of didactic wisdom etc. For instance the 'poem' quoted is a complete sentence written in 7 separate lines. There is nothing for the reader to come in and fill. Even prepositions and conjuctions - preferably avoided in short poems- are given to ensure complete communication.
Which is why I second SujAtha's rhetorical question.

jus wanted to know whether a poet makes any impact on the poem.Yes. I read KalyAnji more carefully than I would bother to read a newbie attempting verse. Unfair, yes...but my reason is simple: I have had some lovely poems from him in the past, so when I read something new from him I go that extra mile. And it is not about established poets vs. newbies. There are several 'established' poets whom I have very rarely enjoyed. After sufficient sampling I am less receptive and do not make several re-read attempts.
A poem, IMO, begins in the reader after the last line is read. He slowly chews on the words and sees the images and ideas spring forward. This is why I do not understand kaviyarangams/poetry reading-sessions at all.
Often one expands/dwells on e part of the poem at the expense of another. Thia may be because of myopia and/or because that part tapped something close to the reader. After all most poetry is about writing of things we all know in ways we didn't think of. It is in this way I feel poems mean different things to different readers.
Now coming to the example. To begin with I'll have to admit there is no clear defintion. And all this analysis of why I like is completely ex-post. i.e. I don't go about making rules of 'what sort of poem appeals'. So this will only be a small exposition of (perhaps) how I came to like this poem.
has got a clear rhythm to it. Apart from the broad context, excellent choice of words and telling imagery, the first appeal comes from the way the words in the two lines seem to bounce as you read them.
Another important thing in every goo poem (and many times to good stories) is to not say all.
is a line that wouldn't make much sense unless one things of the unsaid window. And the poet - being one of the best in the business- makes the imagining easy for the reader. But he does not say everything.

Ok lemme tell u what arose in my mind when i was watching the thrilling balapareetchai  between india and ireland.
Cricket is broadly categorised as test and one-day matches.Test matches are the ones which are eagerly played and huge contests held in abroad, whilst in India one-dayers are respected more, played more.Any spectator loves if a Test match is played like a one-day(i mean fast-scoring and wicket lag)whereas they spit when a one-day is playaed as sluggish as a test-match.
Hmmmm.....a recent form of the game is called 20-20 which is its shorter version.Haha!U got it i meant the haikus:in comparison to the shortest version of the game:the 20-20s.

Hmmmm.....a recent form of the game is called 20-20 which is its shorter version.Haha!U got it i meant the haikus:in comparison to the shortest version of the game:the 20-20s.Hmmm rather tempting comparison. But IMO brevity is all they have in common.
Haikus usually requires a lot of effort (on the part of the poet), in expression and shaping it. Most good ones comes from sharp talent, further sharpened by years of writing. When you say less, all the more pressure to say it right.
One of my favourite anecdotes is about Matsuo Basho, considered the father of Haiku. Apparently once he referred to a poem written several years ago and told his assistant that a word in that poem should be replaced. (By then the damage had been done and the poem had been already published).
Just imagine this.Chewing on the form of a poem, its words for so long, assessing whether the emotion has been expressed best, striving for that delicate balance between craft and spontaneity. Unbelievable. It may be obsessive to think of one word for so long. But it reflects the commitment and devotion of the poet to his creation.
It is only fair that a good haiku demands the same of the reader too. Though it is only natural that everyone is attracted to the shortest poems first, they are deceptive in their demands of our attention.

I agree that Gounder's choice of words to capture images sets him apart:
'kai edu man, thakkAli pazathu mEla tAr oothina maadhiri irukku' (when Vadivelu shakes Khushboo's hand in SingAravElan) :rotfl:

YEAH BECAUSE,THESE POEMS DON'T HAVE SOUND SYNC.
THEY ARE ALL POST-MODERNISM ERA'S CONTRIBUTIONS.
THE BASIC ENTITY OF DISTINCTION BETWEEN PROSE/POETRY FOR THESE PEOPLE IS THEY SAY WORDS USED AND THE PITCH OF THE NARRATION.
WANTED TO KNOW HOW POETRY HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED.I MEANT IN THE ATTITUDE OF READERS.
WANTED TO COMMENT BASED ON OBSERVATIONS.
I THINK 2 POEMS STILL.BOTH WILL BE POSTED TOMORROW.

okay? Huh?!
Hmm....... if you are comparing just the length then perhaps the analogy may be valid. That far but not much further.
A suththu party who has his way in 20-20 will get found out in Test cricket. OTOH the degree of skill and effort required to write a haunting short poem is often several times more than the demands made on a novelist who has some more elbow room. His challenges challenges are phenomenal too - that's another story.

Nice imagery but am unable to enjoy the analogy. The marks in the now-dry stream reflect a past. The love poems do not necessarily seem to connect to a past.
But more important than all this is the fact that I am asking such silly logical questions. It is because I have not been swept off my feet by the poem. When that happens, there are just no questions to ask :-)

The last two:
