some things in tamil cinema are just not encouraged. such unnecessary restrictions doesnot allow tamil cinema industry to make more better films than those being made now.. some silly reasons given are ,
family audience wont like , B and C audience wont enjoy... and more crap...
for example,no derailed is going to release as pachaikilimuthu charam here... this script demands some restrictions to be broken.. but will it be???
why do we need songs??
why do we need intro fight??
why do we need a kuthu dance before the climax???
whyyyyyyyyyyyy??????????

Songs are needed so that the people can dream and enter into a fantasy world when seeing the song sequence...
intro fight is required for the MASS.....for the FANS....HARDCORE FANS.....
Item/Kuthu dance for the front benchers.....
if all these are present...then only a movie can become a hit...(producers/distributors/theatre owners think in this way..why even some actors think that if there are some 3 romantic songs, 1 senti song, 1 kuthu songs, 5 fights without any logic in the movie)....Prashanth's Chocolate became a hit only because of Mumtaz's Mala Mala....

When u consider hollywood, even if a film fails at the BO, the producer wont be much affected coz their films have a market all over the world and when released worldwide, a film will escape in terms of financial losses. They can also insure their films, which is not there in indian films..
A tamil producer cant take risks like this. If a big budget film flops, he will be in dire straights. Eg: KT Kunjumoan, AM Rathnam. A lot more to point out. So they select the safest route, the commercial entertainers. However producers like shanker try to break the shackles now, which shud be welcomed.

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News_By_Industry/Media__Entertainment__Art/Entertainment/No_song__dance_please/articleshow/msid-1800837,curpg-1.cms
Excerpts
You can’t keep blaming the audience and say they like it. If you give people a chequered shirt, they will wear it. Who decides the fashion. Definitely not the people. Business ethics should ensure that you don’t sell something that will kill people
You mean we have to segregate content?
My friend Goldie Anand, lost his job for saying this. That was a political statement. I will say it, as I have nothing to loose. You must allow X-rated films and separate them from family entertainment. Currently, we are mixing it all. Mainstream cinema is being corrupted by this content. Censor board is a body appointed by us and we cannot let them behave like monitoring royalty. The industry must have a say in this issue. Instead of throwing a little bit of the sex into, say almost all, Tamil songs which have lyrics about licking, sucking, tasting and biting, (I'm just translating what’s publicly aired on FM channels all the while) separate the X rated stuff. All of this is frustration which needs an outlet.

I have a problem here. what KH says is : IF we allow the x-rated films, then the general expectations of the same from the audience in tamil films will get reduced.
I really don't get the logic here.
Already, the young generation is illegally watching all these stuffs. There are plenty of such VCDs / DVDs circulating in TN which can be watched by all.
Even after this, they are coming to the theatre expecting such a content !
IF they allow such films, won't the audience's expectation increase ? :confused2:
I really don't get what KH mean by that !

U are right, selva. The audience is also to be blamed. Even kamal's film vasool raja had a dance number by rahasya. What was the need for it?
If the audience really feels that the producers are turning out trash, then let them stop seeing such films. By this indifference, producers will automatically start producing good, clean films.
We can have 2 opinions on the functioning of the censor board but kamal's views are ludicrous to say the least.

Vikki,
You know. Several govts failed in their efforts to abolish "Alcohol". Once our TN Govt too put a ban on selling of alcohol. But our people travelled to states like Kerala, AP etc to quench their thirst. TN Govt was forced to the point of introducing special buses too in the concerned routes.
It just boils down to the level of individual preference and audience mentality. IF we stop producing movies like that, certainly our people will incline themselves to other state movies that can provide such content. Best e.g., Shakeela movies.
I am also hearing that most of the young generation watches only masala films in kerala. (NO offence meant) though they repeatedly give good films.

i.e, take the 3 letter word out of the closet... pothi pothi vechu, indirect-a vulgar a thinichadhu podhum... Stop making it a big deal.. People who want 'that' will not come to 'these' movies.. Yes, VCD/DVD ellam irukku but it will still make a difference. Not everyone gets to watch VCD/DVD and you have censorship everywhere....there's always this pent-up demand which our directors only happy to exploit in kuthu songs, double meaning dialogues, and innovative camera angles...

Floyd,
U are missing the point..
Today every T, D & H has access to DVD/VCD?internet. There has been talk of censoring some internet sites but has it happened?
Selva is bang on target when he says that in spite of all these happenings, people still come to theatres expecting those stuff.
WE talk of TN being one of the most "educated" states. What prevents the people from rejecting those kind of films? Surely nobody is going to drag U to the theatre . The producers are also to blame but to absolve the audience of all the blame citing the age old saying "Avanaga kaatranag athunaal thaan parkurome" is childish.
Coming to paruthiveeran, what do U mean by good? If U mean the performances, yes, but the way it has been shown, no. U do not have to actually show gore & violence to put forth Ur view. Showing it & then saying "I am only showing stark reality" is childish.

My question is we do have movie branded as Adults only(U, U\A has equal adult scenes, dialogues mixture that is a different story), that means only 18+ should be allowed to watch it. But how many theatres follows that rule actually? Almost none!
Then how we can expect such a maturity from the audience, theatre owners or from Government side if XXX movies are legalised? I mean can theatre owners takes a wise descision that only 21+ should be allowed by checking a proof say driving licence etc.,?

Probably Tom And Jerry is the one for you! (not that its bad, mind you :) ]
Take it easy, I'm a big fan of Tom and Jerry. I almost had my arua out, until you said that it's not that bad. I'd rather watch Tom and Jerry anytime, compared to some of the live action crap that film factory has been churning out for long time.
I think the point some folks making here is packaging and addressing the right audience.
I like what is happening in Singapore. They have R(A) rate, which means Restricted Artistic. These contain nudity or extreme violence and for artistic purpose.
And they have other rating that ensures children are protected.
X-Rated film will never do well in theatres, as one would like privacy and VCD/DVD can take care of that.
And you know what? Internet is breaking whatever intention government with certification and moral policing.
Anyone can download anything nowadays. You are too young to wacht it in theatre? Wait awhile and you can download it from the net. And then, you have Filesharing. So on, so forth.
It will be a wonder what the filmakers are going to do about it.
As for restrictions getting loser and filmakers getting bolder...it's just a matter of time.
End of the day, it boils down to what the filmaker wants to say and whether the violence or sex is essential for the storyline and consistent with teh characters. Does it in anyway relevant to the plot. All those filmschool stuff.
I remember a movie called Mad Dog and Glory. It could have done away with that sex scene...except that in it, it showed how awkward De Niro's character was. Very embarassing. Essential for that character.
I agree with almost what Kamal said in that interview. Market it differently for different set of audience.
Am I on topic here? If not shoo me off, please.

South Park (there you go, big man's T & J! :) ), A Clockwork Orange etc are banned here :(
End of the day, it boils down to what the filmaker wants to say and whether the violence or sex is essential for the storyline and consistent with teh characters. Does it in anyway relevant to the plot. All those filmschool stuff.

Here, meaning where? Singapore? Did they? Damn. But I think they are available in DVD, right? Lesser restrictions on DVD.
Here in Malaysia, the censorboard is getting less strict on violence, but not nudity.

People who want 'that' will not come to 'these' movies..
poor assumption. in the same sense, try to assume that to send a message to public or to entertain, you don't need 'that'

See! :banghead: Even in an A Certificate movie, the word F***was censored. :? Is the govt trying to protect Tamil Adults from hearing the F word? :?
Also the body of Prakash Raj's daughter was censored also! :x It completly ruins the effect the scene was supposed to have.
