Manja boots - Why Kashaypar wanted to make this film? Is this some kind of perverse feeling for Kalki to be caught in warp effect involving pervert of some kind, and use her unusual acting to fill in, typecasting that you just outgrow (even in Shangai, she goes through an affair with a much older guy!). Up there with D.Argento's obsession over his daughter's nude body & the abuse it goes through (I might have dropped a spoiler there)..

GoW comes at a right time for him.

Shaitan

- Bejoy Nambiar used to be one of the standouts in that Amritraj 'who wants to be Hollywood director' show, and it shows here, except he's still in that mode. All so slick & made to impress, that he doesn't let anything hang on you, nor was it all organic?
- total lack of class attitudes (again not asking for Eesan mind!), the other side esp. the victims aren't really part of the narrative. OTOH, the culpable reprehensible lot turning on to each other, FUBAR, turning them in to the victims. Look at the compromised ways with which the man of the lesser social standing in the group is turn into the public 'fall guy'. This Dushyant guy, named Dash, is the sort of guy who would pitch ideas, but when things FUBAR, he'll take the fall. But here again, he works in the bar taking in 'Cocaine'. Lashing in street side borders on being a little eccentric, I don't know if it's foreshadowing (obviously Kalki's part has the one in bathtub much earlier only to reveal itself towards the end). In simple terms, this "Dash" is no Dassappa, and well, Shaitan isn't "Accident", it's interests lies elsewhere. But these interests do not rise beyond the 'urban youth FUBAR' genre.
- Kalki playing another traumatized child, give me a break pretty please? Haven't seen the Zoya Akhtar film and Smita Patil Jr film, so waiting to see some lighter parts, FFS, even that Coke ad with Imran was refreshing.
- The driver guy, KFC or whatever acronyms he's given, was impressive, following that part in Yellow Boots..

Vicky Donor -Hilarious and sensitively handled.Annu Kapoor :lol:The rest of the cast was good too and relationships were naturally done.

The logic gap for me was the fact that nobody bothered to verify Vicky claims of earning money through handicraft exports.I mean ,suddenly if money starts flowing in,parents/wife will get a doubt as to where this is coming from. That too in these days, can't believe somebody got married just like that and her initially resistant dad too let his profession pass.

This could have been overcome by showing him as a decently successful businessman/cricketer who earnings shoot up because of the donations.

But overall nice to see such odd but slice of life stories getting told in this medium.

http://www.cinemanewstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/UGLY.jpg

Kali (read Kali as in Rose Bud and not Kaalee the Goddess), Kali is the child of divorced parents Rahul & Shalini. When Rahul is still in search of a carrier in films with the help of his friend/agent Chaitanya, Shalini has settled down with Shoumik, the police chief of Mumbai. Kali's uncle Siddhant, who is a real time crook seeks help of Shoumik for various of his illegal deals. During a Saturday, Rahul's custody parenting time, Kali goes missing. Inspector Yadhav files the case in not a very serious tone, until he comes to know his chief's responisibilty in Kali's life. A rapid & vigorous search is carried out, until the ransom call comes in declaring Kali's disappearence as a kidnapping. The beauty of the investigation of the police department with the aid of the family memebers of Kali is what Ugly is all about.

Screened at Cannes Film Festival (17/MAY/2013) under Directors Fortnight category, Ugly finally got a theatrical release exclusively in France this 28/MAY (limited screens - 41) and I had a wonderful chance to get to see this beautiful tale about Ugliness yesterday. Anuraj Kashyap's claim of working with the script since 2006 is visible on screen as he had essayed on the minature of a mamooth naration, which is not only crisp but quite intense too. Lauding Bala & Sasikumar whenever he gets a chance, Anuraj Kashyap's work Ugly has all the lightless areas those which are covered by these 2 TFI film makers. But through the film Ugly, Anuraj Kashyap has elevated his directorial skills. There are only a few film makers who design their scenes in such a way that they show you only what they want you to see. Bala does that, and thats why their works are quite gripping. Rest of the directors concetrate on everything by showing you a vast landscape that really does not serve as a "big thing" to the narrative of the story.

The opening of the film and the introduction of the characters are not only quick but the way its done proves the hold of the director on the script. The characters which are talking over the phone are conversing with someone else, but their conversation is glued with the jumbled dialogues and the quick cut scenes takes you back and forth resgistering the characters - the who is who - as after that it will not be reminded, but only their self is potrayed. Modern Mumbai is still shown in the backdrop of poverty dirven soceity (an aspect the westerners enjoy to watch - actually this story can work even in the rich society of Mumbai, but for some reason Anuraj Kashyap wants to mingle in as a film maker who makes films for such audiences). The modernity is quite well excuted in the investigation. It does not cross any lines, but sticks to few explanations - whether one understands it or not is irrelevant to the story as its based on the entourage of kidnapped girl and not the investigation itself.

Just like in any Anuraj Kashyap movie, you get to hear some awesome Pop-Rock music throughout. They are quite loud and aggressive suiting the ambience and mounting a bit your pressure meter. When one by one the characters step outside their shoes, the film ultimately comes to a corner banging itself with Christopher Stanley's Money theme song (goes something like THa Ra RA Ra Rum - the one you see in the trailer). Its here you slide down your seat, the attack of the Uglies at its full swing. GVP should get more accolodes for producing such original pieces. The director's main tool is juggling with the characters as effective as possible. So he does not look for any neatness or uniqueness in motion angles. Camera goes static to moving and gives an immense feel of getting along with the movie.

The Casting is perfect. Each artist come from different platform of entertainment - TV, model, DJ, theatre artist - and they unite to give us the most natural performence possible. Girish Kulkarni is in complete form. All the artists put together take away any remaining beauty that still stuck to the film Ugly.

Few scenes would be disturbing and the language is quite offensive. Well the film itself is aggressive whole of its runtime. As the movie deals more on emotional level, there are not gory violence but the violence is quite raw. Its dryness can be shocking. The film seeks your enorme attention, which goes unfavourable for the movie. And with subtitles it can get confusing where you land up not quite understanding what you just witnessed. The events of the characters potrayal and behaviours can be denied by a set of audience and a question always rises - Does our society have such people ? As usual, the answer lies within the audience. Personally I will not doubt it, eventhough few segments in the film tries to go over board, we humans are capable of doing the ultimate, even if its not what we are put on this world to do. But, be reminded, its just a tale, more interesting than a cop story trying to chase the baddies in the heart of Mumbai City.

So whats Ugly all about ? Can't tell you without giving away the spoilers, but can try to give you a clue : How far would one go, to get the money for their loved one ? Watch the movie, come back, read the above sentence - if you get it this time too, then thats what Ugly is all about !

Singham Returns [2014 : Hindi : 2h30m : Action]
Directed & Produced (along with Ajay Devgan) by Rohit Shetty

Starring : Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor (new addition to the series) & Police personels

(Sequel to 2011 Singam with almost the same film making team & starcast (minus Kajal Agarwal & Prakash Raj)

Bajirao Singam, DC of Police Mumbai, needs no introduction. For the minority who don't know him : Aptly called Singam, Bajiroa was an ambitious youngman from a remote village with a passion towards his Police job. Events happen just as they would for any pure cinematic soul which pushed Singam over the edges and during the fall he fights back the system's corruption with his roaring slaps and takes the culprits down with him, proving that its not the fall that kills, but the sudden stop at the bottom with Singam on top of you.

Now, the DC of Mumbai Police and surrounded by many admirers, Singam's patience is again put to test when his Godfather & mentor's life is put to danger by corrupt politicians. Drama unfolds in Singam's life which corners him. Glad are the corrupt politicans who are hiding behind the system, but less they know that a cornered Singam is more deadly than a free roaming one. Thus, Singam Returns.

The film works big time. So many things happen in the film that keeps you quite occupied that you can even forget the route from the pop-corn bag to your mouth. Ajay Devgan as Singam, no, Ajay Devgan is Singam. He is powerful and beleivable when he throws people, catches them mid air and his slap that takes sidekicks to places. His eyes are still fasinating, and his dialogues are crisp. Its not a remake by any chance, a new story of investigation of a murdered cop that leads Singam & team to dark places in the soceity and system. But all the fantastic scenes are those fantastic scenes that we have enjoyed already. But still they all are fantastic. The action scenes are electrifying, and when Ajay Devgan does them it just increased few more tons of volts. There are 2 shootouts, the first one was gracefully captured. But still, its taken ditto from Max Payne 3 game. Why its good because, they have brought it out live with actual stunts men and Ajay holding the AKs and going on a bullets spraying spree is deadly.

Kareena Kapoor may irritate a few, but majority will find her sweet. Romance does not work as usual, but you got to be very careful when I say something like that about Romance. You may end up liking it. The film flows briskly becoming a shift river to water falls, until it reaches a destination called Climax. Here is where Singam proves to be a Cat family. The whole Police Revolution starts off brisk but ends up as a "Ramraj Cotton Banian" ad. And the same 'teluguish' ending, where the menancing villans become buffoons. Talking about the villans, there is this main villan, a 'RGV'ish Guruji, but the t-shirts he wears made me laugh. Both the villans utter some close zoom menancing dialogues, but become the laughable assets for the film. And finally the end credits song, don't even ask about it. I wonder what's the necessity for such a crap to be included knowing well that its a crap. But for the ones who stay, are gifted with Kareena's raunchy moves.

What particularly interested me is the way Mumbai was shown. It actually is modern Mumbai at its best. Some scenes make you question whether is it really our Mumbai. Excellent potrayal of the city, should visit it some time soon. There is a Ambulence Retrival from the water scene. Its was beautifully shot. And very glad that there is no single corrupt cop in the film. They have shown the 3rd Cop Category, the 2 former being Good Cop & Bad Cop and now its Singam Cop. There is this Hulk kind of assistant called Dhaya, thought he was great and much importance was given to him which was quite exciting.

Its purely a commercial film, so control your expectations and if you think such films hook you in, go roar with Singam. Must be watched in theatres to extract the thrilling action and a pulse rising BGM score for all the awesome slo-mos.

Singam Returns : Shrewder, Slier & "Slapier"

Mardaani, a very slim and cool film which takes trafficking of female children as its theme. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, thanks to Rani Mukerji as Shivani Sivaji Roy, the Mumbai Crime Branch officier. The initial tone of the film was quite gripping where Shivani has only one clue to follow - the call from an unknown Kingpin. She enlarges her search, when one of her god-daughter goes missing, using some efficient surveillence and effective Police interogations methods.

The kidnapping racket is well narated, but the whole network becomes so weak when Shivani tries to unearth the worms. Karan, the main villan, does not provide any cruelity in his looks nor in his performence. Later, more villans join making it a parody of weak potrayals which draws a question whether these people were behind such gruesome acts. But the movie goes kicking and slaping with some energetic dialogues & terrifing scenes.

What could have been a partner to the female centric film Kahani, falls flat due to its uninteresting subplot which fails to hold our attention, but certainly Mardaani is not to be missed.

A true tribute to 'Godfather'. Thanks to its length, each character is explained in detail and gives the experience of watching a gory tale of revenge, betrayal live.

While Manoj Bajpai takes the honours in the first part, Nawazuddin Siddiqui takes it in the second.
