What a delightful film !!

So unlike the thrilling regulars...must be his most atypical film. A very 'English' black comedy in this American film. A little slow but it couldn't have been any other way. Lovely performances and the ease with which the plot thickens.

Much needed relief in these times of high adrenaline demand.

The opening sequence of Once upon a time in the west- Enough said. The pacing of these movies are awesome, with music and some powerful performance I don't ask for much. Yeah, I am still sinnapullai. So, my argument can't be fair, completely.

Add to it the Ecstasy of Gold sequence in TGTGATU. Other movies are pretty ordinary, if not for their style. These two movies are sheer pleasure. Plus, Leone must be in the 'elite' if Once upon a time in America is done with. That is a fabulous movie alongside Epic Gangster flicks.

I first saw Jaishankar, Major Sundarrajan and A.Kannan in cowboy hats and leather jackets. The film didn't even offer a justification for that aesthetic assault. So I proceeded to develop a distaste for Westerns without watching even one.

I am not a western fan, but definitely am an Eastwood western fan. Is TGTBTU overrated? It's damned good, fine entertainment, but yeah, fans, critics tend to overblow its so-called quality. First and foremost, Leone owes to Kurosawa, and mix of phoney Western (that is an American artform, and transferring it to Europe gives it some creepy feeling) and great score is what these films are made of.

There has been better Western, courtesy of Eastwood himself since then. Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter are smaller, quieter but powerful films. Let's not even talk about Unforgiven (ithai yaarachum overrated-nu solla poorangga paru).

BTW, Leone is better than Kurasawa IMO. Kurasawa may be the big daddy of cinematic techniques and so forth, but Leone mastered the art which attains zenith in his last creation. Yojimbo wasn't even half as good as AFoD to me, atleast the performance. :D

Do you want to watch and enjoy movies or do you want to be known as a connoisseur? I prefer the former, though one shouldn't see anything wrong in the latter also!

Brando in Streetcar? Heh! That's role of a lifetime for him. Godfather athu ithunu pessikkirangga. Athellam, jujube for him. I doubt that anyone can pull this off (Newman comes close, watch him in Cat On Hot Tin Roof - also Tenesse William stuff). It has been played on stage by others but its memorable always for the way Brando pulled it off. I too prefer it to Waterfront.

Come to think of it, I was watching The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. The Endsville town was engulfed by Hip-Hop-ism, and one character turned up with the pants, when everyone else were more up to date. :D

Over the weekend, my wife-to-be and I were watching top 100 songs of the nineties, and the attrocities in form of fashion and those terrible band.

I bowed and apologised on behalf of all Gen X to my Gen Y fiance. MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, gad what were we thinking!!!

Stunning performance. From the very first scene where he walks about scratching his sweaty back with his thumb and checks her out as he speaks he is great. Amazing in every single scene.I have seen in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Newman's pretty good there but Streetcar is just another level.

People talk about the car scene with his brother in Waterfront ("I could have had class"). There are about half a dozen scenes in Streetcar which would trump that scene.

Never wrote anything. It's one of those films that I find difficult to review. Performance onnu. Then, the whole film. What is it about? It's so multi-layered, I think it'd be another decade when I think I can write a proper review on it.

My fav performance of his is still that in Apocalypse Now. But this is iconic performance. . If I love NT in Gauravam, I should not ignore the masterpiece that was his performance in Manohara.

Speaking of Manohara - you should check out Brando in Julius Caesar. :D

I didn't quite like the movie Apocalypse Now. So I found the performance very attention-seeking. So much expectation is built then it gets very shock-and-awe. And it has a running time of a couple of days. I am not sure I'll revisit that.

Subtle changes in expression, control over voice and delivery, pace of reaction, what's-running-in-his-mind kind of expressions, outbursts, vulnerability and brutishness. Just beautiful.

Thanks to PR, I got into Brando nostalgia. Edutten Viva Zapata DVDyai, Parten Padattai.

Nothing new to add about his performance. This time around, I was busy getting impressed with Anthony Quinn. Apparently, he wanted to play the lead, but, well Kazan/Brando kambinesen irukkumpothu you shouldn't be too ambitious. Anway, he got best supporting actor Oscar.

Not as profoundly aesthetic as Streetcar or Waterfront, but is much more entertaining in a broader canvas sort of way.

Monster! (1999-TV movie).

Played in cinemax last night. I was too lazy even to reach the remote.

Sort of cheezy tribute to the 50s monster movie, I found it to be quite entertaining. Except for M. Emmet Walsh, everyone else are B-grade actors or newcomers. It's the old college kids vs monster tale retold, with setting in a town that is purpotedly cursed to have horror movie cliches. So, before you can say hey, that's so formulaic, they'd tell it to you first. Very self-conscious, tongue in cheek and nice fun. Good time pass movie as the hubbers would say.

Simple and well enacted. The sophistication of old Brit movies is quite charming.

Valkyrie comes with a minimal plot and is indeed very watchable. I mean everybody knows what happened @ the end of Operation Valkyrie. So with a known story Director Bryan singer has given us a simple screenplay to keep us interested till the end. The movie wasn't boring atleast for me.

tis not just the plot which made me feel the movie special ....

doing a Historical movie has its own difficulties ..... every single thing which is gonna appear on the movie has to be re-created .... the airplanes, the costumes, the war vehicles, the way of talk, the buildings and most importantly the characters of the movie who represent someone in reality ...

utmost care was to taken to carefully represent the historical factors .... the writers must be very careful in what they represent as facts n script .... portrayals of the different characters would have been their greatest challenge - as they would need to discuss with many before even forming the dialogues ...

all the more i was very impressed with the movie ... though we have seen a lot more movies in the past of such valor and pride .... this movie stands a little different from them with more of visual effects ..... background work has been the main backbone for this movie ....

Yes, I was a Steven Seagal fan up to this movie. I know after that, he got fat, lazy and started making direct to DVD crap.

But I love his fighting style, man. Aikido masters will argue that it is not supposed to be offensive, but hey, he was a master too.

I like this movie coz it pokes fun at his own past roles. The quick to break things up, the temper, all made fun of. The anger management class is a riot. Decent movie by his standard, can't beat his first three or four outings where you get more bone breaking moments, yeaaarrr :twisted:

Rummaging through my old VCD collection, and picked this one out. Was in top ten, does it hold still?

This time, I do what I normally do to Eastwood's films, who usually work in subdued colours - I tweaked the screen to black and white...and it worked better.

Hell of a movie. Still is my favourite Eastwood outing. Oscar loved him in 93, forgot about him, and have been in love with him again from 2000s, but he has been churning out quality pix back in the 80s: Billy Bronco, Honky Tonk Man, Heartbreak Ridge, Bird, and the cream of the crop. White Hunter Black Heart, a thinly based slice of life behind the scene look at the making of the classic The African Queen by John Houston (in the film, its John Wilson). Talaivar portrays Houston as the Hemingway of Hollywood. Many critics complained that his performance was a poor mimicry job, I thought it was Eastwood's way of doing things. Great film.

Thalafanz, my new converted Eastwoodian, please note this film.

Resurrecting The Champ.

Never knew this film existed. Josh Hartnett as struggling sports writer, and Sam L Jackson as ex-boxer now a bum living on the streets. It's a well scripted, actor proof role and Jackson delivers with lots of soul in it. Made up to look older, the make up does not interfere with his performance. Also gone is badass voice, now down to shrill of a ageing man now living with nostalgia. Nice movie. Good show by Jackson.

Gran Torino.

Convinced that they are not going to release it in theaters here, I got myself a pirated DVD. Not bad quality.

Since I've already read reviews, the storyline is predictable. Clint is, of course, awesome as Walt Kowalski (not related to Stanley, I suppose), but I have seen shades of this character in earlier Eastwood films, namely Dirty Harry, Sergeant Highway (Heartbreak Ridge), filmaker John Wilson (White Hunter Black Heart) and even coach Frankie Dunn (Million Dollar Baby), all rolled into one.

Another thing I notice is the religious elements...as with MDB, presence of religion is strong here. I wonder why...the old man trying an uncomfortable reconciliation with faith? He's critical but at the same time seems to be making some kind of compromise. That is confusing, when I look at him from filmakers point of view.

Despite some tragic occurrences, and Shakespearean ending, its a fun film. Great fun. Great film for his swan song (he did say this might be his last on screen appearance).

The Deer Hunter - Good

Although the movie is lengthy, one can understand why. The movie at length shows how a bunch of friends are devastated and seperated by the war. Excellent acting from everyone involved especially Chris Walken. Never knew he could act so well. De Niro, such an versatile class-act, Emotions come so easy for him.

Meryl Streep - You beauty. Felt like travelling back in time and start loving her. Such a gentle little killer act from her :D.

Seven

I liked Seven. The story revolves around only on 4 characters, no importance given to any unwanted characters. Its like cat mouse game, gripping from start to end. Morgan Freeman, most of his movies I have seen, he plays in a calm and composed manner, this time too he does the same, but that sticks nicely to the character. Brad Pitt & his wife portions are very good. Just like Robin williams surprised as the murderer in Insomnia, Kevin Spacey surprises here as a serial killer. But this role is more brutal and fearsome.

Zodiac is not bad either, but its too long. Its goes on and on like a epic. Didn't like it much.

1. oilman Daniel is forced into baptism by a priest/pastor and is humiliated in front of a crowd in a shameless display of religious nonsense - the oilman bears it all just for the oil !!

What's so great about it ?

From the start the movie seemed quite trying to funny and absurd (a la Coen brothers) but failed. The negotiations, the audience being played around, the airheadedness of the perpetrators etc. Then as it progressed it wanted to be taken seriously, feel for the people as if they were 'real' - their characterizations were anything but, particularly the folks in the bank.

So by the time he is dictating his will I was kinda bored. It ended blandly - waving the realism flag from nowhere. :huh:

Some parts worked. Al Pacino's conversations with his mom, wife and 'wife' were good and his acting was of course great. But the movie as a whole, didn't click for me.

What Just Happened.


De Niro back in top form. Playing a typical Hollywood producer, and his trial and tribulations. I've read the book it is based on, by producer Art Linson, and I think they (Linson co-produced it with De Niro) made lots of changes. Originally I thought it was to be funny, like earlier Barry Levinson (who directed this one) and De Niro collaboration, Wag The Dog. Nope, it's quiet serious actually. There were few laugh out loud moments, but it's pretty serious.

Characters oriented films like this can fail if the performers are substandards. Luckily, assisting De Niro are excellent performers. Michael Wincott is insane as temperamental film director, Stanley Tucci is apt as scriptwriter who is having affair with De Niro's ex-wife, Robin Wright-Penn whom I've not seen onscreen for a while.

The bonus is Sean Penn and Bruce Willis, who plays themselves. Willis overplays himself niceley, poking fun at his superstar image. Yeah, the funniest scene has him crossing sword with De Niro. Good movie, will watch it again solely to check out De Niro's performance. The man is still energetic for his age (in great shape too, unlike his pal, Pacino who looks bad these days).

Edit: Forgot to mention John Torturro as an eccentric talent agent. Funny as hell. Actually, the film is funny...hmm... :? innoru murai paarkanu.

Sad that it didn't PR. To me its one of the best to come out of the best decade in Hollywood filmaking, and that too from an already senior of that time, Lumet.

Mirrors, though does not give a minute by minute thrills - makes sure that the person on the seat doesnt go long off ... most of the night sequences make u feel u are watching at blank screen for a long time ... Concept was similar to that of a possession, but different when "IT" is haunted :-)

One scene which makes me really chill was the jaw opener ... :huh: its very difficult to see that scene, particularly its been shown completely till she teras off her whole lower jaw... yappa - bayangaram ....

Watched 'The Sting'. Paul Newman was brilliant and the background score/ visuals/ screenplay were so interestingly knit together. I love the very colour tone, accent and locales of the America of 30s. Robert Redford looked stunning as well. Though predictable, the movie is one helluva ride!

Venki, I agree with you on how the word "classic" is used. Ippovey, classic 90s film patthi peesikkitirukkaangga.

But here, to define that film as classic is to give it the merits. It has been generally agreed upon by film scholars that that film is indeed worth checking out, plus its impact during the time of its release. Of course, upon revisiting, even if you put yourself at that era, and at that state of mind (The target American audience -teens to early 30s - were beginning to think differently as Vietnam War began), you may still not see it as classic.

As for Butch....namma talaivar William Goldman-oda superscript is the main hero. Then, of course Newman and Redford, great chemistry.

Sting takes a bit of patience to watch these days. To me, definitely a classic (does the nose salute).

I was never a fan of Star Trek series. Watching this movie as it is, really enjoyed it. Interesting screenplay eventhough they don't have much backdrops to show... Just space and spaceship, but it was never boring. JJ Abrams :clap:

Dan In Real Life

One of those small romantic comedies which has loads of acoustic guitar in the background score, which essentially screams, "hey audience, this is film festival material, you better like it or be scorned by pretentious critics".

Well, I almost fell for it, but the guitar part aside, its not bad. Predictable storyline (K.B would like this plot about widower falling for his brother's girlfriend) and smile, rather than laughter, here and there and Tamizh film wedding ending.

And dammit, Steve Carell is pretty good, as a serious actor. Did a great job here.

Its like watching continuous clipping of gorgeous artwork.

frames stand there for seconds without anything moving in it and with excellent music in the background - Fascinating.

The lead actor reminded shivaji in many scenes.

Not as entertaining as 7 samurai or yojimo...but yet captivating.
