Hunger - Disappointed. But for a masochistic turn from Michael Fassbender, and hand few moments (like the long shot of the dialogue with Liam Cunningham). In the end you wonder about Bobby Sands than about the film. Perhaps a bit about its failure.

Frozen River - I dig films where you have helpless characters. Unknowingly and inevitably there are events which brings about a change. I like films that transforms the setting into canvass without undermining the narrative. You need films to be made on different milieus. As much as you want Scorsese's New york or Spike Lee's or Woody allen's or Coppola, you'd also want to see the borders of New York State (USA). Trafficking of illegal immigrants, drug trafficking, racial differences and above all, co-existence are trademark. This film though stays away from overblown complications. It's just accidental that the native Mohawk and white lady meet each other. In spite of ethnical difference and social construct(s), these women(there is a short cameo of a third one, a "Paki") have several similarities, least being of a mother. The lead characters are both single. There is no "great American dream", simply because there is no "American", just simple desire to lead a existence as they see fit. Devoid of self-righteous ("white") pretexts. The film manages to successfully portray the changes (between the characters) and the change (in their lives).

Edge of Heaven - Another gem of a film by Fatih Akin. German cinema has found itself a modern Fassbinder. Being a Turkish immigrant himself, Akin is not merely interested in polemics of it, but takes a humane approach to his characters. Akin captures the evocative faces - German and Turkish, with such rigor and emotion. Hyperlink cinema is no gimmick. And the usage of death, the mother of all motifs, and the sadness of it all, are not for shock effect, Akin lets us know with subtitles for each segment and "loss" brings about an epiphany and realization. How very comforting to find 'em understandable...

Half Nelson - Terrific film on American school system and a perfectly sketched relation of a white teacher and a black student. As with "Frozen river", there are two lead characters, who couldn't help themselves, but help each other. This is much more pronounced in a racial sense, and unlike Frozen river, there is an optimistic element of co-existence much evident in the film. Ryan Gosling is an amazing actor, and his character is enacted with such verisimilitude and nuance.

Watched it mainly because the hero played an 'architect' and the chick was gorgeousest. Loved the visuals. The movie was time-pass though!

It was a long time since I watched a western. Seriously, this is a great Genre. Thanks to the AFI list. Its far better than the IMDb lists. The lead performances and boy the superb song.. "Raindrops are falling... " :musicsmile: Loved it to the core!

Actually the girl is famous for being Jack Bauer's daughter on 24 (Elisha Cuthbert) and Emile Hirsch (the guy) has graduated to more serious roles in movies such as Milk, Alpha Dog while starring in studio duds such as Speedracer.

Watched Full Metal Jacket. :D Reasserted the fact that 2001 and ACWO are cinematic heights even Kubrick can't touch again. :( Yet, Awesome first half and an even better ending. There was so much to observe in the war scenes that I forgot to note finer features in the scenes that followed them. And yeah, it had some stupid unwanted scenes like the prostitute (with the vietnamese guy/ nigger, etc., long press scenes, interviews) though Powerful performances, weird(apt) OST. Oh, its not the best war movie after all. We do have Apocalypse now and TGoTF. ;)

BTW, Arshu.. watch 'Into the wild'. Strong recommendation. It has the same guy. Watch it.. watch it.

Sat on the edge of my seat. . . and cried for Christine Collins and what she had gone through. After seeing many movies this year, this is no doubt an Oscar winner, both for "Best Picture" and "Best Actress". Angelina Jolie was superb! Only a mother, could have played this part and she was amazing. She really captured how a mother might feel in such a devastating situation. I will keep my fingers crossed for her. :thumbsup:

It is nothing short of enthralling. Clint Eastwood is the master storyteller of our time. Additionally, he's unique in that his movies always offer more in terms of unexpected plot twists. He leaves the moviegoer with the feeling they've watched MORE than just one film. His films are multi-layered. "Million Dollar Baby" turned out to be a different movie than most people thought it would be at face value. Likewise, "Changeling" falls into the same category.

Thank you, Clint, for bringing this gruesomely fascinating case to life. It's as complex as the Black Dahlia ever was. Powerful stuff. :bow:

Sleuth - Disappointing. Apart from Caine's earnest rendition of his original nemesis (played by Olivier in the original), and Law almost succeeds to fill Caine's shoes with his short little exercise in makeup, and accent - but panicky and rushed. Harold Pinter's "adaptation" is best watched before the original. Although it might take away the ingenuity of original. For one thing, the playing arena is cleansed out of laughs, mystique, and playfulness of the original. The dialogues were uninspiring and almost uttered to the audience nonchalantly, as in, "you knew already, so what the heck!". The exchanges were ought to be dramatic apparently. But nothing works. The original had its subtle innuendos, but Pinter obviously wants to ploy around 'em to engage the audience. Unfortunately that final act (and gay twist) didn't work much for me. The original's was masterful.

Get the DVD and listen to Mann's commentary. You'll get a feeling that he is more entranced with De Niro's performance. Awesome subtlety in contrast to Pacino's explosive outbursts. I like the line he where he tells Judd to give Chris (Kilmer) a chance, then "pack up, go home". No reaction, then again, with slight threatening note, "Pack UP, go home". What happened to this De Niro? :(

Didn't like the movie. Regular American flick.

Watched Shutter (Thai version) alone. Few scenes did scare me. But, I have seen a couple of Tamil movies which are very similar to this one. No, not this class- The visuals of the movie are breathtaking, a few subtle repetitions show director's touch, music was awesome and the way it ended was too good(predictable though). eksArsist-ku ithu evvalavO thevalai.

The Ballad of Jack and Rose - Interesting film. It almost succeeds in setting out convincing lead characters (father and girl), and psychological complexities that arise out of their relationship by a self-inflicted alienation from the "other", the deprecating society (in Jack's eyes). That moment of "irresistible impulse" might not be well recieved in spite of the nuance of it. As you might sense, it's an ambitious film. And what's left to say about DDL that hasn't been said before? A master of his craft. His wife, Rebecca miller is a capable director. Camilla Belle is just lovely. Paul Dano, his fat half-brother, and Catherine Keener present interesting idiosyncrasies. There is much to clutch on, and feel for, in this lovely little Oedipus complex melodrama.

Of the ones I have seen it is certainly the most memorable Hitchcock film. i.e. beyind the sheer viewing pleasure, the only one that spurs you into introspection of why we like what we like in Hitchcock. And it is not comfortable at all.

One word- This guy is something. I mean- Stunner! :yes: Completely profound in every sense of its making. But, yes it isn't perfect. I could spot a few mistakes here and there, still to confirm if they are real goofs. Awesome visuals and acoustics. And as again, the best part of the movie is the shades/ similarities in its characters. Hitchcock Sir, my bows. :notworthy: Definitely one of my ten most favorite films.

70s is an awesome decade. My favourite (pirantha decade veeru). It was the year that started young turks like Scorcese, Coppola, Lucas, Spierlberg, Boorman, Millius, Cimino, Schraeder, Polanski, Friedkin, appa-appa, enthanai arumaiyaana directors (what happened to them later is a different issue).

Then, the seniors like Lumet, Pakula, Pollack, Frankernheimer and of course, namma Kubrick were weaving magic.

Great era, I tell ya! Unfortunately, the Bond films of this era sucked (though you gotta love Moore).

Hmm...now I am in a mood to go back to the 70s. French Connection paarthu romba naalachu.

No thanks to Oscar, I went into Paul Newman nostalgic mood. Last night, I watched:

Harper (1966)

Scriptwriter William Goldman's first produced script (for those who don't know, he wrote the original screenplay for Butch Cassidy), and in this DVD, he does the commentary.

It was Newman praisefest throughout the commentary, which I had no problem with because they are not preposterous. Newman was a great actor, and was a great human being. As Goldman says, "You will never hear anything bad about Newman".

Anyway, great movie to revisit. Fun, funny, fast-paced and when you are in the company of Newman, thing hardly goes wrong.

Waltz with Bashir (2008)
Well deserved nomination. Awesome visuals. The screenplay looked like 'inspired' from Citizen Kane. It gives great knowledge about all the violence in Lebanon/ Israel. Superb OST also. But I got a few doubts. What exactly does the hallucinations of different friends mean? Anything surreal? And who was the third friend at all.. they just left out that point!

How do you make a movie about one of the worst US presidents, who has already been criticised, spoofed, and who has been mugging the media for the last eight (nine?) years?

Well, Oliver Stone's way is to keep it straight and simple. Most of what you see, you already know, but its not another conspiracy movie about an ex-president. No, its a character study of a much maligned personality who, like many of us, tries to win his daddy's heart...at the expense of putting the country in danger.

I liked the movie. It's funny, moving, and did not commit the crime of making the lead character lovable. Bush is a repulsive idiot who may not be as blur as he looks. There is smartness in the man somewhere, but in most cases, his smugness overshadows it.

Josh Brolin hardly looks like Bush, not even sound like him, but he made a believable character. The same goes the whole bunch of lively actors, some who even looked the part (I couldn't believe it was Thandie Newton I was looking at, she was dead on as Rice). Nice to see Scott Glenn back, one terribly underrated actor.

Minus point? The ending...where you'd go, "huh?".

I watched it in DVD, pirated copy of an original, so it came with extras. I am watching it again, this time with Stone's commentary. Trust me, he is the best when it comes to running commentary, very informative and he talks like one fan to the other.

A story that make you go, "yeah right", "as if", but Peck saves the day. Won him that gold statuette. That is one legendary actor, I tell ya.

Followup film for this should be "In the Heat Of The Night", a more realistic look at race relations of that time. Of course, there's Poitier.

Watched Talaivar's The Enforcer (1976) after so long. This is my favourite amongst Dirty Harry sequel...among the reason being Eastwood's chemistry with Daly and the humour in it. Great Jazzy score, nicely done (but dated) action sequence and in the middle of it all, "the Dirtiest!"

Quantum Of Solace (DVD).

Never watched any Bond flick once except this. Loved Craig, hated the movie. So, they released the DVD (as fan, obliged to buy original) and I must say, it appealed to me a bit this time. Action sequences are a lot clearer. Missed some good lines the first time:

Bond: I promised them Le Chiffre and they got him.
M: They got his body.
Bond: Well, if they wanted his soul, they should have made a deal with a priest.

Otherwise, the rest felt the same. Stupid M (she's all over the place looking worried when she should be behind desk looking at other matters, bland Bond girl (no feeling-gu for her), music that reminds me of the dreary Brosnan years, and overall feeling of despair.

But one man keeps things together, and that's Craig. He took the best from my favourite two Bond, Connery and Dalton, and added his own soulful performance. The best scenes in this film are the quiet ones. He excels in those scenes. Anyone can do action sequences, heck Brosnan did them, but these scenes are where a great actor shines. Craig shines as the James Bond of our time.

Agreed. But superb score from Morricone. Film focussed more on Angel Eyes, than Joe or Blondie or da man with no name. The chime from the Pocket watch - very chilling.
