The KUTHIRA MALIKA PALACE of MAHARAJA SWATI TIRUNAL (1813 to 1846) is waking up to host yet another SWATI FESTIVAL. As in the previous years the week long festival begins on 6th of January. The festival is dedicated to the memory of the Maharaja who enriched the music traditions of Kerala by his contributions to the carnatic and Hindustani streams of India classical music.
SWATI TIRUNAL is a multifaceted genius. His interests varied from dairying and animal husbandry at one end of the spectrum to arts and astronomy at the other end. However he is most famous as a composer. His fame in this field is so great that often people lose sight of the able administrator and far sighted visionary. He was responsible for modern medicine, modern education, modern meteorology, modern animal husbandry, modern health care, and modern administration. His fame as a composer could no reach the heights it deserved because of the inherent limitations of Maharaja confined to a Palace.
The festival held at the royal residence of the composer is open to the public. The sanctity of the evenings of Swati Festival is to be experienced to be believed.
So if you are visiting Thiruvananthapuram try to incorporate this in your itinerary.
