He was the World No. 1-ranked player for a record 237 consecutive weeks, from February 2, 2004, through August 17, 2008. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Federer won the men's doubles gold medal for Switzerland, partnering with Stanislas Wawrinka.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Surfaces
The Battle of Surfaces was an ATP Men's Tennis exhibition match that was held on May 2, 2007. The contest was fought out between the world number 1, Roger Federer and world number 2, Rafael Nadal, with Nadal finally prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (12-10). What made the match unique was that it was played on a hybrid court which was half clay and half grass. The event was held in the capital city of Rafael Nadal's home island, Palma de Mallorca, in front of a home crowd at Palma Arena.
The reason for constructing a hybrid court is that, when this match was played, Roger Federer had dominated the grass court with 48 straight victories while Rafael Nadal had dominated the clay court with 72 straight victories. While Federer won an equal number of points on both surfaces, Nadal won seven fewer on grass but twelve more on clay.
The court cost 1.63 million dollars and took 19 days to prepare.

[tscii:ecfbc5e690]Federer visits Tamil Nadu
Sam Daniel
Friday, December 22, 2006 (Cuddalore):
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and the world's number one tennis player Roger Federer started his three-day visit to Tsunami-hit areas of Tamil Nadu on Friday.
Federer's role as a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador brought him to an Integrated Child Development Centre, which helps children between two and five recover from the trauma of the Tsunami.
"I'm happy to see the progress that has been made in India. Other places not that far yet. You can very proud of the government that has helped and of UNICEF as well. This is a great step forward. Two years ago, things were looking very different. This gives the kids a chance. I see very happy faces in all the kids," said Federer.
Federer also visited a school to review one of UNICEF's other projects, an activity- based learning programme. But the focus was clearly on meeting with victims of the Tsunami and that included further visits to an orphanage and an HIV Centre.
"I was in Dubai. I saw it on TV, followed it as much as I could. It was a very emotional experience for me. We tried through the tournament to raise money because we've played in all those places. So, its been a pleasure for us as well so that’s why I’m here to show my respect to the lives that were lost."
Federer's visit to India lasts two more days and he will visit permanent housing shelters in neighbouring villages before leaving the country on Sunday. But in this brief period, he's provided enough inspiration for a lifetime.

I watched Federer play against Djokovic recently at the Rod Laver Arena as part of the Aus Opens. Seeing him play live was such a treat! Of course, it was not much of a match. Feddy simply walked all over young Djolie but still, it was worth the money to simply see Feddy's game!
The man is truly a king of tennis!!

Federer served out the set to inflict Roddick's first 6-0 loss in a set of Grand Slam tennis and broke again to take control of the third set.
The American snapped his 10-game losing streak by holding serve only for Federer to break again with forehand and backhand winners to go up 4-1. Roddick shouted ``God damn everything'' after losing the next game.
``I caught an absolute beating,'' Roddick said. ``You deal with it and you go back to the drawing board.''

One way of seeing sumthing thru federer is to get the first set off him,, i know its very difficult to do,,but tat way the opponent stand a better chance..
If Gonzalez wud have got that first set , we seriously had a match here,, u cant come back from a set down and get on top of federer.
If fedex gets the french open, then better handover wimbledon and US open to him without even including him in the tournament, no second thoughts. Rest of the players jus play for runner-up.

Sampras says he could have held his own against Federer
Pete Sampras thinks he could have held his own against Roger Federer but conceded on Tuesday that the Swiss master is poised to smash his record of 14 Grand Slam titles.
Sampras, who retired after winning the 2002 US Open, considered what the result might have been had the two giants of men's tennis met in their prime.
"I don't think one guy would have dominated the other," said the American during a teleconference to announce his return to tournament tennis, playing a limited number of events on a tour for over-30 players.
"I think our games are pretty similar. It would have been a great clash to see us in our prime. Roger is doing what I never did; dominate the way he is. He's lost five matches in two years, that's unheard of.
"But I feel like my game is too big to be dominated by someone. When my game was on, my serve was on, I felt I was tough to beat. I felt unbeatable."
Sampras could soon see how his career stacks up alongside Federer, after the Swiss took another stride towards the record with his third Australian Open crown on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Swiss has won 10 Grand Slams since his maiden title at Wimbledon in 2003 and will break Jimmy Connors's record of 160 consecutive weeks as world number one next month.
After beating Andre Agassi to lift his 14th Grand Slam title, Sampras believed his record would stand the test of time.
But almost immediately an unrelenting Federer launched his assault on the mark.
"I thought it would take longer than seven or eight years," said the 35-year-old Sampras. "I don't see anyone pushing him so I could see him winning 17, 18, 19 majors. He has 10 already and he's in the middle of his career.
"He just came along at the right time and is playing tremendous tennis and I don't see him stopping now."
NO COMEBACK
Sampras also believes Federer is capable of achieving a success that eluded him by winning on the red clay of Roland Garros.
The Swiss world number one needs the French Open to complete his set and become only the third player to hold all four majors at once.
"I think he can because he grew up playing on clay and he's come close the last two years," said Sampras. "I really believe he can win there.
"I'm a fan, of his game, his temperament, how he handles himself on and off the court. I marvel at things he's able to do," he added.
The two players clashed just once in their careers, with the Swiss prevailing. There will be no re-match.
"When we retire we all have thoughts of playing again but my playing days are over on the ATP Tour," admitted the seven-time Wimbledon champion. "It's a lot of work, a whole different lifestyle I'm done with.
"I have been hitting the ball pretty well for the past six months and still feel that I can maybe compete against some of the guys. But to think about coming out of retirement is something far-fetched."

Thus spake the emperor :D
Feddy has everything going for him. There aren't many worthy opponents . Only Rafael and Roddick are worthy adversaries. Safin shows shades of brilliance now and then . Hewitt is not at all in the league. But Sampras had so many others to fight against.

RocketBoy,
I dont agree with u, Federer is playing at an entirely different level where even the most talented players look like a kid b4 him..I loved Sampras in his peak days and he was my Favorite player, but I dont think he'll be on par with fedex if he played now! He might have replaced Nadal's place and moreever as far as my knowledge there r bigger players emerging every season,
Unlike Pete's days, there r only 4-5 who play consistently, the current scenario is everytime I see some new player making big breaks at higher level. Gonzalez, Baghdatis to name a few..Roddick,Hewitt, Nalbandian, have been trying for years to overcome federer.
"Federer is the greatest"! Even if he fails to win anymore grandslam ( ??) he'll be the greatest for the game he showed for last 3 yrs.

except for Nadal, there is no one who can even dream of taking a set of Federer in the current scenario.......he has 10 grandslams now, he'll have 15 by next year end and probably 20 by 2010 end........if he plays more than 2010 then he might end up with 30 or more which will seriously put a question mark on credibility of winning a grandslam.......
Federer is the greatest ever but he doesent seem to have a competetion even.......thats the sad part.......i'm not blaming Federer or his fans (importantly, dont bark at me pls) but the state of the men's tennis is so bad now......

Dude, i see where your are coming from and though u make some interesting points, I have to disagree with you in some areas.
Aggasi - Absolutely brilliant no doubt about it. A man who was on top of his game for most of his career. The only who would scare Sampras when he's in full throttle in my opinion.
Ivanisevic - The perrenial choker who finaly landed the Wimbledon
Rafter - Not the most consistent player of that time
Kafelinikov - Blows hot and cold
Philophousis - Injury ravaged
henman - Tiger Tim my backside. More like pussycat Tim
Krajicek - More like a one hit wonder than Mr Consistent
The thing is most in tennis will tell you that the current era is the the most competitive field and the one with a larger pool of talent than there ever was. It's just that Federer is an even more special talent than the rest, literally a magician with the raquet, hence he towers above all. At times it's almost like he tells the ball what to do and where to go. A bit like Borg who looked almost unbeatable when he first came into the scene. But if you look at the rest below Federer, it's actually very competitive. There's little to choose from between the likes of Nadal, Roddick, Ljubicic, Blake Nalbanian, Davydenko, etc.
So as for your last remark that I have indicated in bold, I would honestly phrase it like this:
Nobody seems to be able to compete with Federer rather Federer not having any competition.

U have missed out Becker & Jim Courier in the list. Besides, there was Ivan Lendl ( Ageing but ) as well for Pete Sampras to fight it out.
Though Federer is incomparable today & definitely an all time great, my heart feels for Pistol pete for the sheer quality of opponents he had faced like Agassi etc.
Besides, Pete possessed a better , more powerful , awesome service ( not that Fed's weak but inferior when compared to Pete ).
But both couldnt win French open. lets see how Fed takes on French open this year

Yeah Sampras would have had the edge on serve but his backhand cross-court slice/shot and shot combinations were a little inferior to Federer. Hence why Andre Agassi found it harder to over come Fed compared to Pete. Remember Andre's remarks after the 2005 US Open when he said that with Sampras there's always a chance to exploit some weaknesses if you're on your game but with Federer, try as he might, he just couldn't find an answer. Another point many forget is what a great returner of serve Federer is (now almost as good as Agassi) which is why Roddick (whose rubbish tennis is about hitting the ball as hard as he can to all sides of the court) almost always gets hammered coz his only weapon which is his serve gets nullified by Federer quite easily. The thing is Sampras is brilliance personified and so is Agassi but like John McEnroe said once, Federer is almost like both players rolled into one.
But both couldnt win French open. lets see how Fed takes on French open this year
Yeah the French Open has been the only thing that has stopped Sampras short of becoming the greatest ever. Argue as much as one would like to but people will always tell you Laver, Borg etc, the complete players who could win on any surface and this is an argument i suspect is being directed right now at Federer.
The difference is that Sampras was rarely convincing on clay. Often made to look ordinary but in the case of Federer he has won tournaments on clay and has generally impressed on the surface despite falling short in 2005 and 2006. Lets see what 2007 holds for the great Swiss.

According to FBI spokesman, they have discovered that Volandri travelled to a small city called Corleone in Italy, back in January of this year. He initially met with a lawyer named Tom Hagen for two hours.
Next month, he was back there on February 15. This time he met a man by the name of Michael Corleone. According to wire tapes on location, the meeting lasted for 15 minutes.
The county records indicate Volandri is the Godson to this Corleone character. Next day Tom Hagen left for Switzerland for one day. According to tapes, the draw at Rome was discussed. This is Volandri’s home event and he has been trying to win here to boost his sagging career. No agreement was reached.
Next day, a character by the name of Luca Brasi was summoned at Corleone’s office. Luca was transported to Switzerland by a private jet immediately after the meeting. He was later found at the apartment of Federer.
Microphone picked up words like ‘I am going to make you an offer you cannot refuse’. Luca was seeing whispering something in the ears of Federer. Federer bluntly refused the offer. Luca took the flight back home.
That night Federer found a black cat in his bedroom in the middle of the night. Mirka screamed at the ghastly sight. Federer was seeing making a call and essentially accepting the offer.
It was later discovered from the documents seized from Federer’s tennis bag, that it was his agreement to let Volandri win at Rome.
But the documents also indicate that, Federer was clever enough to trade this favor, by insisting that he gets a guarantee in writing that he wins the French Open for the next two years. FBI believe the dizzy spells Nadal is experiencing could be part of this scheme.
FBI is also looking into the shopping trip Mirka had with a lady named Kay Adams when she was visiting Los Angeles during the Indian Wells tournament.
Lot of people have been questioned, the most prominent being a gentleman by the name of Barzini. He denies any knowledge of such activities.
As the investigation progresses many prominent people of the society are being linked to this shocking scandal. In the light of above, the draw at the French Open has been sealed and extra security is being provided for Nadal.
Records of previous tennis legends are being unearthed to detect any questionable activity. More on it as it unfolds.
Please let us know if any of you zombies have any further details on this.

This is the most wonderful thing that could ever happen .Two greats from different era showcasing their talents against one another . 8-)
There's not much to be read out of the outcome as Pete is just a shadow of his former self. He is pretty much a war weary horse smitten by the hardships for playing competitive tennis all these years . There is nothing to prove Pete . You are the greatest 8-)

As many of us already know, the Federalist is a world famous baker who frequently delivers the finest in both bagels (6-0) and breadsticks (6-1) to his hapless opponents.
Bagel - A set win of 6-0 against an opponent and Breadstick is a 6-1 win........
Federalist bagels:
1.)2006 Wimby final vs Nadal :lol2:
2.)2004 US Open final vs Hewitt 6-0 7-6 6-0 :rotfl:
3.)2005 Tennis Masters Cup vs Gaudio 6-0 6-0 (after which Gaudio declared Federer as the greatest player ever)
4.)2003 Tennis Masters Cup final vs Agassi 6-3 6-0 6-4
5.)2006 Aussie Open final vs Baghdatis
2004 US Open final vs Hewitt
Since no player had ever lost two sets at love in the Open final in 120 years, this is considered the most one-sided final in the Open Era. :rotfl2: :rotfl:
2004 "Golden Bagel Award"
Federer was presented the inaugural "Golden Bagel award" in 2004, a light-hearted award based on a trivial statistic given to the men's professional tennis player who serves up more "bagels" (sets won 6-0) than any other player in any given year. Federer gave out 12 "bagels" in 2004. He also served 23 "bread sticks" (6-1 sets won).
More 6-0 sets he has served:
*06/07/04 Halle, Germany (final) def Marty Fish 6-0 6-3
*09/27/04 Bangcock, Thailand (final) def Andy Roddick 6-4 6-0

I watched Roger's match today at the French Open... Looks like he's definitely worked on clay a lot lately! I really pray he wins the French open this year to become a Grand Slam champion... After all, he won Nadall in a preliminary Clay Court tournament a couple of weeks back, in spite of losing to him the last two years in the finals... Roger Federer
This page lists various career, tournament, and seasonal records and achievements by tennis player Roger Federer.
Grand Slam tournaments
In 2001, Federer ended Pete Sampras's 31-match winning streak at Wimbledon in the fourth round of the tournament.
By winning Wimbledon in 2003, Federer joined Stefan Edberg, Pat Cash, and Björn Borg as the only players to win both the juniors' and men's Wimbledon championships.
Federer's victory at the 2004 U.S. Open marked the first time in the open era that anyone had won his first four Grand Slam singles finals. He eventually won his first seven Grand Slam singles finals before losing to Rafael Nadal in the 2006 French Open final. Only Federer, American Richard Sears, and Briton William Renshaw won their first seven Grand Slam singles finals. As of February 2007, Federer had won ten of eleven Grand Slam singles finals, the highest percentage among the twelve players with at least eight career Grand Slam singles titles.
With his victory over Marcos Baghdatis at the 2006 Australian Open, Federer became the first man to win three consecutive Grand Slam titles since Sampras in 1993-94.
By winning the 2006 U.S. Open, Federer became the only male player (and the only player in the open era) to win both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same year for three consecutive years.
Federer has won four consecutive men's singles titles at Wimbledon (2003-2006), a feat accomplished only by Borg and Sampras in the open era. In the 28 matches Federer played at Wimbledon during those years, he dropped just five sets. In comparison, Borg and Sampras lost fifteen and fourteen sets respectively over a similar four-year period.
Federer is the only male tennis player to have won eight Grand Slam singles titles in three years (2004-2006).
By reaching the semifinals at the 2007 Australian Open, Federer broke Ivan Lendl's previous record of ten consecutive Grand Slam semifinal appearances with his eleventh consecutive semifinal appearance which he extended by reaching the semifinals at the 2007 French Open to 12.
Federer is the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to reach the final of all Grand Slam tournaments during one year (2006).
By reaching the final of the 2007 French Open Federer broke the all-time record of seven consecutive Grand Slam final appearances, held by Australian Jack Crawford, set 73 years ago at Wimbledon in 1934.
With winning the 2007 Australian Open, Federer won his sixth Grand Slam singles title in his last seven attempts, equalling Rod Laver's accomplishment.
At the 2007 Australian Open, Federer became just the fourth man in the open era to win a Grand Slam singles title without dropping a set.[1]
By winning the 2007 Australian Open, Federer won his tenth career Grand Slam singles title and tied American Bill Tilden for fifth place on the all-time Grand Slam singles titles leaderboard.
By winning the 2007 Australian Open, Federer became the only male tennis player to win three different Grand Slam singles tournaments at least three times each (Australian Open: 3 times; Wimbledon: 4 times; U.S. Open: 3 times).
By winning the 2007 Australian Open, Federer became the first man in the open era to win three straight Grand Slam singles titles twice in his career (2005 Wimbledon, 2005 U.S. Open, and 2006 Australian Open; 2006 Wimbledon, 2006 U.S. Open, and 2007 Australian Open).
Federer won his 11th consecutive Grand Slam singles match in straight sets when he defeated Mikhail Youzhny in the fourth round of the 2007 French Open. This tied John McEnroe's open era record for the most consecutive straight set victories in Grand Slam tournaments.
Federer won his 36th consecutive Grand Slam set when he won the first set in the quarterfinals against Tommy Robredo in the 2007 French Open. This broke John McEnroe's open era record for the most consecutive sets won in Grand Slam tournaments.
By beating Nikolay Davydenko in the semi-finals of the 2007 French Open, Federer became the first man to reach eight Grand Slam finals in a row, bettering Australian Jack Crawford's seven in the 1930s.

[tscii:df827f30ee]Tennis Masters Cup
In 2004, Federer became the first player since Ivan Lendl in 1986 and 1987 to win back-to-back Tennis Masters Cup titles without losing a match.
In 2006, Federer became the first man since Lendl to reach the final of four consecutive Tennis Masters Cups. Lendl reached a record nine consecutive finals at that event.
In 2005, Federer became the first man to win a match 6-0, 6-0 (a "double bagel") at the Tennis Masters Cup, when he defeated Gaston Gaudio in a semifinal. This was the first double bagel win of Federer's career.
In 2006, Federer extended his record run as the only person to remain undefeated in the round robin stage of the Tennis Masters Cup. In his five years of playing the tournament, Federer has won all 15 of his round robin matches.
[edit] ATP Masters Series tournaments
Federer owns 13 Tennis Masters Series shields, second only to Andre Agassi's 17.
In 2005, Federer became the first player to win four Tennis Masters Series titles in one year. He repeated this feat in 2006.
Federer is the third player to have won all four North American Masters Series events in a career, after Agassi and Michael Chang.
Federer broke Pete Sampras's record of 19 consecutive Tennis Masters Series match victories when he defeated Tommy Haas in the third round of the 2006 Nasdaq 100 Open in Key Biscayne, Florida. Federer's streak reached 29 matches before he lost to Rafael Nadal in the final of the 2006 Monte Carlo Open.
By winning the 2006 Nasdaq 100 Open title, Federer became the only player to win the first two Tennis Masters Series events of the year two years in a row.[2]
[edit] Ranking and points
Federer is the fifth player in the history of the ATP computer rankings to be the top ranked player every week during a calendar year (2005 and 2006). The others are Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras, and Lleyton Hewitt.
With his tournament victory at the 2006 Tennis Masters Cup, Federer set a new record of 1,674 ATP Race points, eclipsing his 2005 record of 1,345. He had also held the previous record of 1,267 points in 2004, which had broken Andy Roddick's 907-point total for 2003.
With year-end ATP tour ranking points of 6,335 in 2004, 6,725 in 2005, and 8,370 in 2006, Federer finished with the highest number of year-ending ATP tour ranking points since the ATP circuit began in 1990, although the points breakdown changed slightly in 2000. The previous year-ending high was Sampras's 5,097 points in 1994.
Federer holds the record for the highest ranking points at any time of the year: 8,370 points on November 20, 2006.
Federer has been the top ranked player on the ATP list since February 2, 2004—a total of 175 weeks as of June 4th, 2007. On February 26, 2007, he surpassed Connors's all-time record for most consecutive weeks (160) atop the men's rankings. Only Connors (268 weeks), Lendl (270 weeks), and Sampras (286 weeks) have spent more weeks in total as top ranked players on the ATP list.

[tscii:6bdc61b8ea]Individual match records
In a semifinal of the 2004 Tennis Masters Cup, Federer won a second set tiebreak against Marat Safin 20-18. This tiebreak lasted 26 minutes and tied the record for the longest tiebreak (in terms of points) ever played since the tiebreak system was introduced in 1970. Besides Federer, only Björn Borg (first round Wimbledon 1973 against Premjit Lal), Goran Ivanišević (first round U.S. Open 1993 against Daniel Nestor and semifinal Queen's Club 1997 against Greg Rusedski), José Acasuso (first round Canada Masters 2006 against Björn Phau), and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (first round Australian Open 2007 against Andy Roddick) have won such drawn out tiebreaks.
[edit] Match winning streaks
In 2006, with his first round victory over Richard Gasquet at Wimbledon, Federer surpassed Björn Borg's 41-match grass court winning streak record. Borg set this record from 1976 to 1981, while playing only Wimbledon. Federer took the streak to 48 consecutive matches by defeating Rafael Nadal in the final.
On 26 October 2006, Federer became only the second player in the open era, the other being Borg, to have held five winning streaks of more than twenty matches. Federer's first streak was 23 matches in mid-2004. The second streak was 26 matches spanning the latter half of 2004 and early 2005. The third streak was 25 matches in early 2005. The fourth streak was 35 matches at the end of 2005. The fifth (and longest) streak started at the 2006 U.S. Open and ended after 41 victories on March 11, 2007, which included tournament victories at the U.S. Open, Tokyo, ATP Masters Series in Madrid, Davidoff Swiss Indoors in Basel, Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, the Australian Open in Melbourne, and the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open. This is the fifth longest winning streak in the open era.
Federer won a record 26 consecutive matches against top ten ranked opponents. The streak lasted from October 2003 to January 2005, when he lost to Marat Safin in a semifinal of the Australian Open.
Federer won his 32nd consecutive match over American players when he defeated Sam Querrey in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida in March 2007. His last loss to an American was against Andy Roddick in a semifinal of the 2003 Canadian Masters.
Federer holds the record for most consecutive singles wins in North America, winning 55 straight matches before losing to Andy Murray in August 2006. (This loss also stopped Federer’s streak of 17 consecutive finals reached, just one shy of Ivan Lendl's record 18 consecutive finals in 1981 and 1982.)
Federer holds the longest winning streak on hard courts: 56 matches (2005-06). The streak was ended by Nadal in the Dubai final in March 2006. At the 2006 U.S. Open, Federer started another hard court streak, which reached 36 consecutive wins (including tournament victories at the U.S. Open, Tokyo, ATP Masters Series in Madrid, Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, the Australian Open, Dubai, and two Davis Cup matches in Geneva against Serbia-Montenegro). The streak ended on March 11, 2007, at Indian Wells when Federer lost to Guillermo Canas in the second round.

[tscii:b58740002a]Tournament winning streaks
In 2004, Federer became the first player since Björn Borg in 1979 to win consecutive tournaments on three different surfaces, having captured titles at Wimbledon (grass), Gstaad (clay), and Toronto (hard).
Federer won 24 straight finals from the tournament in Vienna in October 2003 through the tournament in Bangkok in September 2005. This streak was a new open era record, breaking the previous record of twelve straight final wins, shared by John McEnroe and Borg. It marked also the first time Federer won five consecutive tournaments he entered. David Nalbandian broke the streak in the final of the 2005 Tennis Masters Cup.
Federer won four consecutive titles at one event for the first time on June 18, 2006, at the Gerry Weber Open. He repeated this feat by winning his fourth consecutive Wimbledon championship in 2006, beating Rafael Nadal in the final.
[edit] Yearly excellence
Federer's loss against Richard Gasquet in the 2005 Monte Carlo Masters brought his win-loss tally to 35-2 for 2005, the best start on the men's tour since John McEnroe, who went 39-0 in 1984.
In 2005, Federer won 95.3 percent of his matches (he went 81-4), second in the open era to McEnroe's 96.5 percent (82-3) in 1984.
In 2006, Federer won at least 80 matches for a second straight year, the first player to do so since Ivan Lendl went 106-26 in 1980, 96-14 in 1981, and 106-9 in 1982. Federer has won at least seventy matches in four consecutive years (2003: 78-17; 2004: 74-6; 2005: 81-4; 2006: 92-5).
In 2006, Federer reached the final in 16 of the 17 tournaments he played, setting a new record of 94.1 percent finals appearances. [3] This eclipsed McEnroe's 93.3 percent set in 1984.[citation needed]
In 2006, Federer earned U.S. $8,343,885 in prize money, breaking the previous record of U.S. $6,498,311 earned by Pete Sampras in 1997.
In 2004, Federer became the tenth player in the open era to win at least 11 singles titles in a year. He is the first year-end No. 1 to win 11 titles since Lendl in 1985. In addition, Federer is the only player to win at least 10 titles in a season without losing in a final. In 2006, he became the first man since Thomas Muster in 1995 to win 12 titles in one year.
In 2006, Federer became the only player in the open era to have won at least 10 singles titles in each of three consecutive years. He won at least 11 titles during the years 2004, 2005, and 2006.
[edit] Career excellence
As of May 20, 2007, Federer has won 48 of 61 finals during his career, for a winning percentage of 78.7 percent. This compares to 72.7 percent by Pete Sampras, 71.3 percent by John McEnroe, and 70.5 percent by Björn Borg.
From 2004 through 2006, Federer had the best three-year match and tournament winning percentages since the inception of the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings in 1973. Federer won 94.3 percent of his singles matches (247-15) and 69.4 percent of the singles tournaments he entered (34 titles in 49 tournaments, including eight of twelve Grand Slam tournaments). The three-year match winning percentage record was previously owned by Ivan Lendl, who won 92.1 percent of his singles matches from 1985 through 1987.
By 2005, Federer had won singles and doubles titles on all four surfaces: hardcourt, clay, carpet, and grass. (Singles: Sydney 2002 (hard), Hamburg 2002 (clay), Milan 2001 (carpet), and Halle 2003 (grass); Doubles: Rotterdam 2001 (hard), Gstaad 2001 (clay), Moscow 2002 (carpet), and Halle 2005 (grass).)
Federer won 31 consecutive sets beginning with his Tennis Masters Cup roundrobin match against Andy Roddick on November 14, 2006, and ending with his first round match against Kristian Pless at the Dubai Tennis Championships on February 26, 2007.

[tscii:73da3d6db3]ATP - PARIS STAYS A DREAM
Roger’s dream of the Grand Slam has once again been destroyed by Rafael Nadal. Our star simply committed too many rrors with Rafa showing a very constant performance: 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
“I am a little sad about the way I played,” said Roger. “I have not accomplished what I had planned. But this was certainly not the last time I played here, I’ll try again next year.”
Roger beat Nadal in the Hamburg Masters final in May to end the Spaniard's record 81-match winning streak on clay, but he never really looked like winning today. He failed to convert his first 11 breakpoint chances, putting pressure on his own serve by repeatedly allowing Nadal to hold. Nadal saved 16 of 17 break points and broke serve four times in 10 chances. He had only 27 unforced errors to 59 for Roger.
Nadal relentlessly probed his opponent's weaker side, sometimes forcing Roger to hit half a dozen backhands in a rally. Roger did have chances to take command at different points in the match - but unfortunately never really succeeded.

Man, how can Roger lose to ANYBODY? I cant believe this... Becker, Edberg, Sampras, all top-notch players couldnt make it in clay! I thought Roger would beat that stereotype... Looks like we'll have to wait another year for that to happen!

"I see a lot of myself in Roger, as we're very similar on the court," Borg said. "He doesn't show his emotions either, he doesn't let it all out. He keeps his cool. Of course, he has feelings and emotions, just like every other human being, it's just that he doesn't like to show them on the stadium. But maybe he lets all his emotions out to someone after he has left the stadium. I know that he cares a lot about it, and after the match he's a very cool guy.
"Roger is such a special guy. I think if he wins this year, which I think he will, then we can definitely start talking about whether he'll beat the Sampras record of seven Wimbledon titles in all. It's a question of whether he keeps his motivation. Roger is almost unbeatable on grass as he has no weaknesses at all. Roger is the complete player on a grass court."

Post Match Interview - Federer
Q. Why didn't you leave the trousers on, really make a statement?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, it was cold, but not that cold after all, so, yeah, that's why. Yeah, we both took them off.
Q. How did it feel to play out there in the new stadium?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, it was different, you know. There was always a constant breeze from the one end, like in many of the stadiums around the world. So that was not very different, it was just different for Centre Court.
I definitely prefer the old one over this one right now, but obviously it's a work in progress. We are all looking forward to next year. But it definitely does look and play a bit different this year.
Q. How do you feel about your performance? Were you happy with today?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I think it was okay. I was pretty pleased with my performance. I think it was solid. I was very concentrated on my own service games, trying to get those through, you know, then hopefully put pressure on my opponent.
It worked out. I think he also played a decent match. I had to come up with some shots once in a while. I think it was a good performance and I'm really happy actually the way I played today.
Q. Was that the kind of match you were looking for after not playing Halle this time around?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, look, I was of course a bit worried maybe before the first round. Look, I've got so much confidence, so much experience on this surface that I always expect myself to play good matches on grass. That's what happened today. Hopefully the next match can be similar as good.
Q. John McEnroe said on television he was surprised you changed your routine. He always kept to the same routine and he got to five Wimbledon finals. Today I suppose you proved he was talking rubbish.
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, I got to win the tournament to really prove that, I guess, that my decision was the right one. Only that one is going to be good enough for me and everyone else, too.

....
Look, for me, my body was hurting after the French, after the clay court season. What do you want me to say? I'm not going to go start risking injury, risking my body.
I'd rather play Wimbledon than maybe play Halle, lose there, and not play Wimbledon at a hundred percent. I had to take a tough call. I'm not superstitious like other players are. That's why I can take decisions like that.
Q. Where is your body now? Do you feel a hundred percent?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I'm recovered. It takes about four, five, six days sometimes to really get everything out of the system, all the little things that hurt a little bit. Of course, when you start easier again because you don't have competition again, you can go at your own pace, whereas if you play a tournament you have to go at it a hundred percent otherwise you lose. That's a tough call of playing a tournament right after a Grand Slam.
Q. I believe there were some Federers listed as guests in the Royal Box today. Do you mind telling us if you had relatives here, and if that's customary for a first round match?
ROGER FEDERER: My mom got invited into the Royal Box from the chairman, Tim Phillips, which was very nice. My dad actually, too, but he preferred to stay home and maybe come for the final weekend if I'm there.
My mom came with a very good friend of ours from South Africa. I hope she enjoys maybe lunch right now and tea later on. Excellent.
Q. Wimbledon is obviously a very important tournament for you. Do you remember your feelings when you first made it in the main draw here I think like eight years ago with Jiri Novak? Was it special for you?
ROGER FEDERER: I was very nervous going into my junior first round. I remember after the warm up I was going up to the umpire telling him, I think the net is too high, because I was so nervous. I felt like the net was double the height.
He actually went down and checked it. The net was, of course, accurate, so I kept on playing and won my match. I was so nervous then.

....
When I came back the following year I got a wildcard, which of course was very nice for The Championships to give me. I played on the back court right behind court No. 2 and lost in five sets to Jiri Novak.
I played a pretty good match. I don't remember being particularly nervous about it. I actually thought I would have a good chance because grass was supposed to all of a sudden be my favorite surface after winning the juniors.
I wasn't even that disappointed after because I played a good match and he was a tough opponent to have in the first round.
Q. Obviously the atmosphere out there is so different this year. Does the difference make you realize how special the feeling and atmosphere was at the old Centre Court?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, every time you come back here and play at Wimbledon on Centre Court, you warm up, all you hear is the sound of the ball, your movement, your breathing, because people are so quiet.
They really only applaud for good shots. They never applaud for unforced errors. It's just a very respectful crowd. It's such a totally different feel to anywhere else in the world where I always play.
Maybe it's just that nice change to different spectators here at Wimbledon to other courts that make it so much more special to play here.
Q. We saw Valentino Rossi on the stands watching the game from your box. Is it great champions watching other champions?
ROGER FEDERER: I was very happy he could attend. He let me know already a couple of weeks ago he was going to be able to make it to come over to Wimbledon before his race in Holland. We met each other at the Laureus awards. Not this time because I didn't go, but the year before that.
Yeah, he's a very, very nice guy. If I can help him out with tickets, I'm very happy to do so.
Q. The rain stopped him yesterday. The same rain didn't stop you today.
ROGER FEDERER: Almost did, yeah. I guess we got a bit more lucky. It was nice he came.

...
Q. Did you ever have a wrist injury as serious as Murray's? How long did it take you to recover?
ROGER FEDERER: I fell once on clay back in '99 when I had Davis Cup in Belgium, in practice. I fell on my wrist and kind of tried to stop myself from falling. I remember I kind of jammed my wrist and it blocked. I felt it for about a couple of weeks. I really felt it especially on the forehand side.
Q. How long did it take to recover properly?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, quite a few weeks actually. It was really a pain 'cause there's so many little bones in the wrist. It's really a bad injury, I think. I don't know what happened really to him. Yeah, I think he probably made the right decision.
Q. Can you describe the different feeling going from the French, where every ball is coming up above your shoulder, coming to a slick grass court? How does that match up with your game?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, you definitely got to adjust. I can use the slice much more effectively here on grass. I can take chances on the serve, even on the second serve. You don't kick so much. You slice more the serve. It skips through the surface.
You can use the kick too these days, because of the slower conditions just to mix it up once in a while.
The ball obviously goes more flat over the court, which makes it faster. That's why the rallies are shorter. You definitely have to make big changes coming from Paris to here.
Q. At the start it seemed you were both a bit nervous about the surface. The conditions seemed cold and obviously damp. Was it tricky at that time?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, you know, you're kind of worried about injuries, slipping. I warmed up well. I'm feeling good on grass. I felt I had the grip.
But then, you know, it really rained a little bit harder. Then you're like you see him slip, you touch the grass, you think it's actually pretty wet, but you don't want to stop. Once they put the covers on, you're going to lose again another 45 minutes.

....
It was good we stayed on. I don't think it got to the point where it was a big risk. It was still under control. You know, the players can also look at each other and go like this is crazy.
I think we took the right decision, both, to keep on playing. I maybe would have waited it out a little bit at one stage. I think it was okay the way it went.
Q. How actively are you looking for a new coach? Is it a disadvantage not having one at Wimbledon?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, my plan was back in February not to come with a coach here anyway, no matter what happened. I was planning on having Tony earlier in the clay court season all the way through to the French Open, then I would go to Wimbledon myself. So that is not a change.
At the moment, having the French Open and Wimbledon totally occupying my mind, I'm actually not thinking much about a coach right now. Probably after I start really considering who are the options.
Q. You said the other day you're not the enemy of the past, but you really are the enemy of the past. The past doesn't seem to mind. What did you mean by that?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't like it when former greats talk bad about our generation. That's what I don't like. I guess that's what I meant.
Q. You're not their enemy. You feel some of them are your enemy?
ROGER FEDERER: No, no. I've heard, you know, comments that apparently it's easier these days. Some give us great praise. It's nice to hear nice comments instead of talking bad sometimes, which I think is a pity.
Q. You didn't make a Hawk-Eye challenge today. I think if you would have looked up and seen your mug shot you may have challenged that, because it was rather bad.
ROGER FEDERER: Which shot?
Q. The Hawk-Eye shots of your faces. Before you make the challenge, there's a picture of two players on the court. Yours was red and black and blurry. It's just not very flattering. Perhaps you could challenge the quality of the picture.
ROGER FEDERER: You don't like the picture? I'll speak to them (laughter).
...
Q. Do you think Hawk-Eye is accurate?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't know. Have they got all three dimensional probably must be, otherwise Wimbledon wouldn't use it, yeah.

Gentleman Federer a true five-star champion (Belfast Telegraph)
Roger Federer's march to greatness is relentless. The statistics say so. With his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title, he equalled the feat of the legendary Bjorn Borg.
He captured his 11th Grand Slam, again equalling Borg, and now stands just three away from the all-time record holder Pete Sampras.
He has won 34 consecutive matches on the grass courts of Wimbledon, 54 on grass in all competitions.
But statistics do not tell the whole story. Not when it comes to the grace and elegance and the sheer majesty with which Federer has dominated his sport.
BJORN BELIEF (kentucky.com)
Bjorn Borg had called Roger Federer "an orchestra," a man playing his tennis symphonies with an entire, versatile string section at the ready. And Federer required all his music and composition yesterday on Centre Court against Rafael Nadal, a human topspin machine who can hum a few shots himself.
Federer would win this final, 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2, equaling Borg's modern-day record of five straight Wimbledon titles in plain view of the Swedish superstar, who was sitting approvingly above in the royal box. It was his 11th major championship overall, closing in again on the record of one of Federer's few remaining critics, Pete Sampras, who has 14.
Federer smacked the winning overhead and sank to his knees, then hung his head in exhaustion as he sat in a chair. "I was almost crying already when I was up 5-2," Federer would say. He looked like Ali after 15 rounds with Frazier. He made a gracious speech in a fresh, five-piece white ensemble.
Fifth one for the ages (The Globe and Mail)
Roger Federer got the fifth Wimbledon title in a row he so badly wanted - and with it, the benediction of the man whose record he equalled.
In an enthralling match worthy of the presence of 1976-80 Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg in the Royal Box, Federer defeated Rafael Nadal 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2 yesterday.
As a lob floated above him awaiting his smash on his second match point, Federer's thoughts wandered.
"Lots of images go through your mind," he said after the match, "especially on a ball like that when you have all that time. I'd already been through it when I sat down [between games] and thought 'I'm winning 5-2.' I almost started crying.
Federer Joins Elite With Wimbledon Win (forbes.com)
Locked in the toughest test of his Wimbledon reign, against his only real rival in today's game, Roger Federer summoned the strokes and resolve that allow him to chase records set by the greats of yesteryear.
And after Federer finally overcame Rafael Nadal in a five-set epic Sunday to win his fifth consecutive championship at the All England Club and 11th Grand Slam title overall, tying Bjorn Borg on both counts, guess who was waiting to greet him in a hallway off Centre Court?
Borg himself. They smiled and embraced, then chatted briefly, a tete-a-tete between the only two men in the past century to win Wimbledon five years in a row.
"To see him after the match - it was very fitting in my point of view," Federer said. "It made me a bit more proud of myself."
Federer takes the fifth with fortitude (latimes.com)
The world got an unprecedented peek at Roger Federer's guts Sunday, and it turns out they're considerable.
Hidden these last five kingly years by his celestial shots and his spiteful serves and his durable cool, they had never received a summons to contribute.
Never had Federer strayed into the fifth set of any Grand Slam final, let alone against a mobile blast furnace like Rafael Nadal. Never had he faced two bloodcurdling 15-40 games within that fifth set. Never had Bjorn Borg not so much sat as loomed in the front row of the Royal Box.
Never had Federer tried to win a fifth straight Wimbledon with, as he said, "Bjorn Borg sitting there, Jimmy Connors sitting there, John McEnroe sitting there, Boris Becker sitting there."
It’s high five for Roger Federer (cybernoon.com)
Roger Federer and Venus Williams wrote their names in gold on the green grass of Wimbledon. The Swiss held the Wimbledon trophy for the fifth time in front of most cherished Wimbledon champions Kramer, Fraser, Santana, Smith, Connors, Borg, McEnroe, and Becker. Federer said that the memory of all these champions present would remain with him for a lifetime.
Both Federer and Nadal at this Wimbledon were on Mission Borg. Federer to win five Wimbledon’s in a row like Borg and Nadal to win the French open and Wimbledon Grand Slams same year like Borg. For the first time Nadal became the first player to take Two sets off Federer. For 3 hrs and 44 mins Federer and Nadal battled for the Golden trophy.
Brilliant rallies, stunning court coverage, amazing accuracy in shot making, all together came like a bouquet of red roses in this historic Wimbledon finals.
Federer's Five Of A Kind (courant.com)
Roger Federer lost his temper over a line call and misplaced his magical groundstrokes for nearly two hours, but he never lost touch with his champion's heart and, in one of the most stirring Grand Slam finals in recent years, defeated rival Rafael Nadal Sunday to win a record fifth consecutive Wimbledon.
There was joy everywhere on Centre Court as Bjorn Borg, 51, the tennis icon whose record Federer matched, came down from the Royal Box at the end of this 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2 epic to present the winner's trophy.
Federer looks to surpass Sampras (grimsby.co.uk)
World number one Roger Federer on Sunday turned his sights on making more history as he equalled Bjorn Borg's record of five consecutive Wimbledon singles titles when he defeated Rafael Nadal 7-6 4-6 7-6 2-6 6-2.
He also drew level with Borg and Rod Laver on 11 Grand Slams, but now he wants to be the greatest of all time by eclipsing the feats of Pete Sampras who claimed 14 Grand Slam titles.
Federer, who with Borg watching won his first Grand Slam final in five sets, said: "It's on my mind, but it's not as if I say I have to beat this record otherwise it's no good. Pete Sampras is maybe the greatest player we've ever had so to break his record is not the easiest thing, I know that."

While watching the 3rd and 4th sets, I thought Roger was gonna lose for sure! It's amazing, how he turned the game 180 degree in the 5th set, and finished the match as if nothing happened!
So I guess, he's got 11 Grand Slam titles so far, and 5 Wimbledons! And Pete 14 total, and 7 Wimbledons, right? :P
Curious to see how far Roger can go...

As one of the comments said, ATP wouldn't have deployed the system had they not been convinced by the developers. Look at how hesistant FIFA is to use sensors for goal line calls. Also, the analysis is not entirely correct. The 6 cameras, a number the blogger has given, need not be placed along the same line (that they cannot be, is another matter). If I understand it right, the cameras must be placed in a optimal setting minimising the overall error. It is certainly much better than the naked eye. Anyway, each player only has three challenges. So, they can't go on forever and ruin the game.

he broke federer from 40 -0 in the last game of the first set to take it to a tie breaker and win the first set
His serves were good, return, volley defence shots all were perfect!!
He not only beat federer, but beat Nadal in semis, Roddick in quarters and nalbandian in the 3'rd round.
He is definitely a star performer and has the talent to win major titles

I have some strange feeling that he may be knocked off either in quarters of semis this time around. I mean there is no technical prrof to this, but that is my gut feeling........ We are not seeing the complete dominance of him any more in the recent times...

the world no. 3 Djokovic was v. good in semi final and final. Nadalin 2nd place-ku Aapathu
The problem with Nadal is that the nature of his game has backfired a lot of times. He's the most physically impressive player on the tour but the physical demands on his body will be taking a terrible toll and he is at the peak of his powers as an athlete.
I honestly do not think he will get any better. He is not as talented as Federer or Sampras or Borg or even Agassi for that matter. Federer peaked at the age of 24 or 25 but that does not mean that Nadal also can do that because Federer's style of playing is so effortless unlike Nadal who puts so much pressure on himself with his powerful style.
The schedule factor is also there. He almost played double the tournaments that Federer did just to get hold of the no 1 ranking this year (granted he was quite close on points). But he is not gonna get there easily anyway because Djokovic can beat him on two surfaces and he has proven that. So before Nadal thinks about the No.1 ranking he has to seriously worry about Djokovic displacing him at No.2.
Nadal put so much effort on clay courts a season that he is almost exhausted at every us open. It doesn't make sense to play a clay court tournament (Stuttgart) after wimbledon but he did. This is where i think Nadal and his camp can learn a thing or two from Federer who listens to his body and plans his tournaments accordingly. Afterall, in modern day tennis, its the slams that are the defining moments.

Flawless Roger Federer sets his sights on Pete Sampras grand-slam record (Times Online)
Consider this – Roger Federer has won more grand-slam titles than Rod Laver or Bjorn Borg and if the world No 1 were to win the next two US Open singles titles, he would equal Bill Tilden’s record of six in succession here, and
Tilden did not have too many bona fide challengers.
With every turn of the page, this amazing talent from Switzerland pushes the boundaries of expectation and
brilliance a stage farther and others – from all sports, not only his own – look on in wonder.
By the time of Wimbledon 2008, Federer may enter the tournament with an opportunity to join Pete Sampras, who won 14 grand-slam titles, atop the tennis leaderboard – and who knows, if he has won the French Open and the whole design of the sport has changed, to take a sixth Wimbledon championship in succession would be the record clincher. With this man, you cannot tell.
Federer Collects His 12th Grand Slam Title (New York Times)
Sweat dripped from Roger Federer’s black headband in the United States Open men’s final, as the endearing newcomer Novak Djokovic held seven set points over him like a mirror to his vulnerability.
Djokovic had been the comedian of the United States Open, a 20-year-old Serb who had won over the crowd with his postmatch impressions of fellow players as well as his gutsy baseline game. Federer did not care for his act. And in the accelerated end, Djokovic, playing in his first Grand Slam final, was not yet ready for the inimitable Federer.
As the world’s No. 1 playing in his 14th Grand Slam final, Federer showed why he is the reigning impresario of
tennis. He pounced on Djokovic’s mistakes yesterday, dissecting him for a 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-4 triumph to collect
his 12th Grand Slam title.
Nerve-racked Federer has Sampras in his sights (Independent)
Making history can be a nerve-racking business. In his all-black outfit Roger Federer looked as cool as a New York fashionista, but the world No 1's stomach was churning. Federer admits that his thoughts are turning more and more towards Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles and, as the prospect of No 12 loomed here, he became apprehensive.
"I've had an upset stomach for the last few days," the Swiss admitted after his 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory over Novak
Djokovic in Sunday night's men's singles final of the US Open. "I've been nervous and shaking and had cold hands before the match. I've had it all. I'm supposed to be the experienced guy, who's got used to the situation, but you
never do. "
Federer admitted that a straight-sets defeat was "a bit brutal" for the Serb and added: "I've enjoyed having young
guys challenging me. This is probably my biggest motivation out there. Seeing them challenge me and then beating them in the final is really the best feeling."
You gotta admit: There's nothing like Him (ESPN)
There are two answers: "Yes" and "No." And since we are talking about Him, right now you'd be right with both
answers.
Him. The one who just won his fourth straight U.S. Open, his 12th Grand Slam. Him. The one who has been No. 1 for more consecutive weeks in his sport than anyone in the sport's history. Him. The one who has players on the ATP Tour happy when they come in second. Him. The one Jim Courier said, "You have to be in denial" to think you can beat. Him. The one who is so good that in his semifinal match against Nikolay Davydenko, the No. 4 player in the world, he nearly doubled his average number of errors (25; his average unforced errors per match is 12.8) and still won in straight sets. Him. The one who has his game so locked-in that "the best ever" comments are no longer compliments.
Be honest: In your lifetime, have you ever seen anything like Him?
Deserved, But Not Noticed (The Emory Wheel)
If I asked you who the world’s most dominant athlete is you might say Tiger Woods. You might be wrong.
Who, then, you ask, could strike such fear in his opponents? Who could have more reign over his sport than even the mighty Tiger?
You only needed to watch the U.S. Open tennis tournament, which concluded on Sunday, to find the answer. I’m sure many know his name, but I don’t know if enough people realize the magnitude of what he has just done.
Roger Federer won his fourth-straight U.S. Open, putting another piece of hardware in a trophy case that includes
the last five Wimbledon titles and the last two Australian Open crowns. If you skimmed over any of that read it
again, because it’s an enduring hot streak uparalleled by any athlete of our era.
Resilient Roger Federer closes in on record (Telegraph)
Elegantly dressed in tuxedo-style black, Roger Federer last night won his fourth successive US Open title and his
12th grand slam title, putting him just two behind the Pete Sampras record of 14. But only rarely was Federer at his
finest, and he was greatly helped by Serbian Novak Djokovic failing to take his chances in his first slam final.
Djokovic has become well known during this US Open for being the Rory Bremner of tennis, for his excellent
impressions of other top players. But he had been hoping that the American public would also remember him after this fortnight for his tennis, for having won the title. But Djokovic, the first Serbian male to appear in a major final,
was unable to convert his opportunities, with five set-points in the opening set and then a couple more in the second.
So Djokovic, the 20-year-old world No 3 from Belgrade, could easily have been two sets up, but instead he found
himself at two sets down after losing a couple of tie-breaks. And Federer then took the third set to complete a 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory and so move into joint second place with Australian Roy Emerson on the list of most grand slam titles won. There was also the small matter of earning the biggest cheque in tennis history, £1.2 million, as he was given a huge bonus for having been the most successful player during the series of warm-up tournaments.
Sampras supports Federer's pursuit (San Bernardino Sun)
Some advice, sports fans: Be sure to appreciate Roger Federer, to relish his brilliance with a racket, to understand exactly what a rare treat a champion of his caliber and character is.
Don't just take my word for it. Listen, instead, to someone who knows a lot more about tennis, someone who figures it is a matter of when - not whether - Federer will break Pete Sampras' records of 14 Grand Slam titles.
Listen to Pistol Pete himself. "I did all I could do in the '90s, and I really thought the 14 would be tough to beat. Little did I know Roger would come along and dominate the way he has - and that could last a while longer," Sampras said Monday in a telephone interview from Los Angeles. "If there's a player and a person that I'd like to see break this, it would be Roger. "He's a great guy. Lets his racket do the talking. One of those humble champions I like."
Still only 26, Federer collected his 12th Grand Slam title Sunday at the U.S. Open by beating Novak Djokovic 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-4.

Federer-Sampras match tickets to go on sale
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Tickets go on sale this week for an exhibition match in November between top ranked Roger Federer and tennis great Pete Sampras.
The Nov. 22 match is being touted as the professional comeback of former world No. 1 and 14-time Grand Slam winner Sampras, by challenging Federer who has 12 Grand Slam titles including last weekend's U.S. Open, organizers said Thursday.
The night match will be played in the 12,000-seat Malawati Stadium at Kuala Lumpur on a medium speed indoor carpet.
"Roger is a true class act. He is obviously a great player but his manners on and off the court set him apart just as much," Sampras was quoted as saying in a statement released by the organizers Entertainment Group Limited and First Events Promotions.
Federer and Sampras have played only once before in an ATP match, when Federer won a five-set duel 7-6 (7), 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 in the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2001.
"He is a true gentleman of the sport of tennis and I am very much looking forward to playing him in Kuala Lumpur. I have been preparing for the match very seriously and I will definitely be up to the task by then," Sampras said of Federer.
Federer said he and seven-time Wimbledon champion Sampras practiced together earlier this year at Sampras' home in Los Angeles.
"Although I will not get into who won the practice tiebreakers and sets we played, I will say that the tennis was of very high quality," he said.
The Federer-Sampras match is one of three events comprising the Malaysia Independence Tennis Festival. The other event is a challenge match featuring world No. 2 and three-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal on Nov. 20 against Wimbledon semifinalist Richard Gasquet of France.
The third element of the tennis festival is the ATP Challenger Series that will be held in Kuala Lumpur from Nov. 17-25.

Federer is a great player without doubt. But I still rate him just below Pete Sampras who is a better allround player than Federer. Sampras' serve, running forehand and jumping smashes is still fresh in my mind. The only area I feel where Federer is better than Sampras is playing in long games.

[tscii:672c6a4273]Aaj thak news for the cricket software
Nadal — the king of clay — got to know about Swantha’s software during his visit to India last year. Since then, Raman and his team have been working to get the software ready for launch at the Chennai Open in January 2008. “Mr Nadal is in touch with us. He wants to use the product and we are scheduled to meet in January when he’s in India,” Mr Raman says.
World No 2 Nadal is consulting Swantha Software to figure out how he could beat Roger Federer on grass. The Bangalore-based firm’s software, christened ‘Half Volley’ , provides frame-by-frame analysis of how Fedexpress plays his trademark forehand shots and executes those electric crosscourt returns

former India allrounder and current Karnataka Ranji coach, Vijay Bhardwaj, along with his brother Sanjay Rao, may just have the solution. A software engineer by profession, Rao had an idea which later spawned into a company called Swantha Software Solutions in Bangalore.
"It has been nearly a year now since we began and our major achievement has been the fact that the Indian Hockey Federation has now bought the software. Our executive director and the person who developed it, A Prassana, is now analyst with the Indian team," said Rao, the founder and CEO of the company.
The software, called 'Dragflick', is a match analysis software designed for coaches as well as players to analyse and strategise their strengths and weaknesses with the help of complete statistics along with the appropriate video clippings of the match.
"It has helped the team a lot. We started using it during the Champions Challenge in Boom, Belgium, and then during the Asia Cup and it helped us a lot. My weaknesses, my strengths plus how the team plays during a penalty corner, the oppositions' tactics - all become easily accessible with this software," said India player Sandeep Singh.
Earlier India coach Joaquim Carvalho had said that the software had reduced his work by at least half, and that Prasanna's mastery of video technology also helped in match situations.
The duo has also developed software for cricket, golf and tennis.
"Our software is already being used by the Karnataka, Andhra and Delhi Ranji teams and we have also had meetings with many BCCI officials and they have shown a keen interest in the software '22 Yardz' designed specifically for cricket," said MV Prashant a former Karnataka Ranji player and also business development manager for Swantha. He added that they had earlier approached the International Tennis Federation, but circumstances beyond their control forced them to back out, however they are in talks with former Grand Slam champion Richard Krajicek for his academy in Holland for their tennis software '½ Volley'. "I met him in Germany and he said that he wanted to use my software for his academy before the start of the season next year."
He added: "We have also had talks with Tom Moody who is coaching New South Wales back in Australia.
" Rao said his brother had to retire from domestic cricket last year and that his performance had suffered a lot due to a chronic back problem.
"Vijay has been a great support for our company. He has provided the technical support and also gave us useful tips on the sport and what are the things that a coach would want in a software," Rao said.

World No.1 Roger Federer says he has no reason to look over his shoulder just yet despite a horde of rising stars itching to knock him off his perch.
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic appear to be the Swiss maestro's immediate challengers for the top ranking but others such as Marcos Baghdatis, Andy Murray and Australian Open surprise packet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are all breathing down their necks.
Federer, however, remains unconcerned, preferring to let his own game do the talking.
"I've heard it before and don't read it anymore because it's the same thing over and over again," he said after advancing to a record 15th straight Grand Slam semi-final with a 7-5 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win over American 12th seed James Blake on Wednesday night.
:smokesmirk:
The victory also ensured that Federer would remain as the world's best player for a record 209th consecutive week.
"I'm looking at history, looking at my own game, I'm No.1 in the world, so I'm more concentrated on that than the youngsters," he said.
Federer will take on third seed Djokovic in a dream semi-final on Friday night, after the Serb went through with a comfortable 6-0 6-3 7-5 victory over Spanish fifth seed David Ferrer.
Djokovic this week claimed Federer was not as dominant as he once was, particularly after being taken to 10-8 in the fifth set of his third-round match against Janko Tipsarevic.
"This is the way you're supposed to think out there. You are not coming here to lose in the first round," Federer said of Djokovic's comments.
"You're coming here to hopefully do well and then win tournament if you're one of the top 10 guys. That's reality. That's nothing new. That's not cocky. That's confidence. That's just a normal tennis player."
Federer is aiming to become just the third man in history to win three consecutive Australian Open titles, after Jack Crawford (1931-33) and Roy Emerson (1963-67).
Federer's only loss in the last four years at Melbourne Park has been to Russian Marat Safin in the 2005 semi-final

Tournament after tournament, year in year out, Roger Federer reads and hears how his grip on the world No.1 spot is supposedly loosening.
In the first month of 2008, we still wait for the predicted cracks to appear and for the king to abdicate after 209 weeks as the planet's No.1 player.
You'd think the doubters would learn but the Swiss master heads into Friday night's Australian Open semi-final against rising Serb star Novak Djokovic with fresh question marks over his superiority.
Djokovic went on record after round one to suggest Federer had lost some of his invincibility and may be vulnerable.
Such comments don't rile Federer.
The three-time Australian Open winner would be more surprised if rivals didn't think they could beat him.
"I've heard it before and don't read it anymore because it's the same thing over and over again," he said. "It's like reliving this whole thing."
"But this is the way you're supposed to think out there (as a player)."
"You are not coming here to lose in the first round. You're coming here to hopefully do well and then win the tournament if you're one of the top 10 guys."
"That's reality. That's nothing new. That's not cocky. That's confidence. That's just a normal tennis player."
"I have absolutely no problems with what Novak has been saying or apparently been saying."
"I really don't care because he cares about his game, I care about him and it's good when we play each other."
Djokovic began the tournament talking up his chances of bringing down the world No.1, but took on a more diplomatic tone when cornered after his quarter-final victory over David Ferrer.
"Every time I play with Roger or with the best players in the world, I learn something new, I have another experience," he explained.
"I try to watch matches, speak with my coach and see what I need to do so I can play better and improve my game and win against the best players in the world."
Federer holds a 5-1 lead in head-to-head clashes with Djokovic - the most recent victory coming in the 2007 US Open final - but says it's his own game, rather than his opponent's, he focuses on..
"I usually concentrate on my own game…that's what's happened over the last few years," he said.
"I go a lot with my feeling throughout the match. If I need to adjust something, I'll do that during the match."
Local interest will centre on the juniors, with Australian duo Bernard Tomic and Jessica Moore in semi-final action.
Tomic, who beat top seed Cesar Ramirez on Thursday, is up against Yuki Bhambri in the boys' singles while Moore takes on Romania's Simona Halep in the girls'.
There is also the women's doubles final between Ukrainian sisters Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko and No.12 seed Victoria Azarenka and Shahar Peer. They kick off the action on Rod Laver Arena.
There's also semis of the mixed doubles, the finals of the junior doubles and wheelchair doubles and semi-finals of the wheelchair singles.[/tscii:b02e1544d5]

federer had played his best tennis for incredible amount of time. It seems he is bit unwell also. But he has been no1 for quite so long and with the emergence of talents like djokovich, it will be tough for him to be at top. Nadal has been no2 for quite some time also. But younger people are chasing both fed and nadal. Like pete, Federer may slowly face the real situation

Yes, now it is safe to assume that his reign at the top of Mens tennis is all about over. After all, he is looking human now.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Roger is the best tennis player in the history, because of the well rounded game that he possess. Yes he seems to have a problem against Nadal, which to me is more mental than anything else.
I think the desperation to get past Pete's record also might be catching up on him. So far he has had an ordinary year 2008 (compared to his dream years of 04, 05, 06 & 07).
With 3 gone, Roger would be more focussed to get the last (US Open) major of the year.

Feddy's days at top is numbered. With his exit in 3rd round @ Cincinati Masters followed by the first round exit last week (@ Roger's Masters) Nadal is all set to take over the mantle (No. 1) by the end of this week (provided Nadal advances to Final of Cinci Masters).
How quickly things have changed for Feddy. His dream to get past 14 GS titles looks little far now.
