Whether its batting at any position, Sourav rulez & is the uncrowned king of 1day game
He has played many match winning knocks against top class bowling attack

Hi All
Nobody can question Sourav's achievements on one day cricket .
As a frontline opening batsman or
As a decent wicket to wicket bowler
or As an astute captain
SOURAV IS THE REAL KING
Why we are not graceful enough to appreciate FACTS  :!: ??
SOURAV'S CONTRIBUTIONS ON ONEDAYERS ARE FAR FAR BETTER THAN THOSE OTHER SO CALLED IDOLS OF INDIAN CRICKET

Sourav is doubtlessly a great talent. Particlarly around the years 1999-2000 he was a treat to watch. He used to consistently get huge hundreds (it was always 130,140 with Sourav). In particular I remember a match in Gwalior where he made a scintillating 153* against NZ. He opened the bat and carried on throughout. Because of this Dan Vettori didn't bowl a single ball (as Sourav mauls left arm spinners - oh the way he dispatched Grant Flower over the roof in Sharjah, thrice in an over).
The highlight of the match was the way he attacked. He made 153 out of the Indian total of 261. His last fifty came off 22 balls. It was virtually a one-man show. He was so confident that he'd move across to his off-stump line and play lofted flicks to fine leg. Cairns would try to york him only for Ganguly to play an unbelievable stroke from the crease that sent the ball over mid-on.
This match is by no means a one-off. He was dominating those seasons throughout. Sachin-Sourav was the best opening combo India ever had.
However I would stop short of calling him the greatest ODI player for India. He was never comfortable all around the wicket. A bouncy seamer was not his come-of tea. One can vividly recall Shoaib Akthar troubling him time and again with the short-ball. He is not among the fastest runners. Even during his best days he would play a Sehwag style slash nicking to the slips. These were not just bad patches, but things he never managed to conquer.
Towards the end he really made people wonder what happened to that fluent strokemaker we once knew.

Sourav plundered the Srilankans.
Muralidharan had no clue at all , where to bowl .
Chaminda Vaas was running for cover
The last 10 overs were run feast . :D
Quite often the ball was sent soaring to stands :D
It was merciless assualt on the Srilankans .
I think we ended up with something like 370++ ?

We made 373 and bundled out Lankans for 216. Robin got a five-for.
Here's the link to the match:
http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/WORLD_CUPS/WC99/SCORECARDS/GROUP-A/IND_SL_WC99_ODI21_26MAY1999.html
That's of course a great innings. From 100 to 150 he hit 5 fours and 4 sixes :-) But (without taking anything away from Sourav), the straight booundaries were a bit short there. It was slightly advantageous for someone like him (who loves to dance down the track). I think that was the first and last ODI to be played there.
Moreover that match had a matching valiant contribution from Dravid. They put on 318 for the wicket, which was a world record then (broken by Sachin and Dravid later that year in Hyderabad -this is one match before the Gwalior match I quoted)
The match I am talking starred Sourav and Sourav alone:
http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1999-2000/NZ_IN_IND/SCORECARDS/NZ_IND_ODI3_11NOV1999.html
I quoted it because it is less known that the famous Taunton match and it is an example of Sourav carrying India completely on his shoulders when everyone faltered.

I only saw Cricket till May 2001 ... As far as I have seen Ganguly, this is what I thought abt him !!
* A great batsman - His cover drives were a TREAT to watch !!
* Excellent opening batsman - His partnerships with Sachin were awesome ... He, Sachin and Rahul were considered as the top 3 in the Indian time for a long time !!
* Beautiful player of spin ... Specialist in comin down the wicket and hitting those sixes !!
* Very weak on his leg side - Especially that short ball, had a hard time makin a pull-shot or hookin the ball !!
* Nice medium pacer - Got some important wickets at crucial times !!
* Sloppy fielder - misfielded a lot, but one of the best catch-takers in the slips though !!
* Above all, a GREAT captain that won a lot of matches and tournaments for India !!
* Donno how he did after 2001, I heard he lost it after that phase !!
Overall, I liked him a LOT !! Is he still the captain of India ??

Ganguly was a very good and agile captain.. but batting-wise he is strong only on the offside... he is in doldrums while facing deliveries that are bowled to his leg side. I remember pakistanis capitalising on this and gettng him out... even aussies...

Ganguly joins team in South Africa
Dileep Premachandran in Potchefstroom
December 5, 2006
Sourav Ganguly has joined the Indian team ahead of the practice match at Potchefstroom beginning December 7 © AFP
At 10 past eleven on a hot and dry day at Sedgars Park in Potchefstroom, a Mercedes minivan pulls up a few feet away from the outdoor nets. As soon as its doors open, the TV crews make a beeline there from their vantage points. Sourav Ganguly gets out quietly, picks up his kitbag from the boot, and wheels in into the practice area.
Initially no one sees him, all of them occupied midway through a session. Then, as he sets his kitbag down and set about opening it, Munaf Patel turns around. He stares wide-eyed for a minute and then extends his hand. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had been chatting to Munaf just moments earlier, follows suit. 'You drove straight from the airport?" asks Dhoni. Ganguly just nods, and half smiles.
Ian Frazer, who had just been lobbing balls to Rahul Dravid in a net kept apart from the others, is next to see him. He too goes up and shakes his hand, sharing a few words. Greg Chappell is having a quiet word in Gautam Gambhir's ear when he spots Ganguly. Ganguly crosses the few metres that separate them and they shake hands. "Welcome back, mate," says Chappell. "Glad you made it."
Dravid has just finished a small session with Frazer and Greg King throwing them down when he wanders across to meet the man he replaced as India's captain. They chat for a couple of minutes, both men gazing in the direction of the batsmen and bowlers engaged in the nets.
Soon after, Ganguly breaks away to see to his equipment. The SG thigh pad comes out, and he puts his bat, gloves, pads and helmet on the grass in readiness for what will be his first experience of South African pitches in nearly four years. As he pads up, Irfan Pathan spots him and waves. Ganguly waves back. After nearly a year away from the limelight, he's back. Only time will tell if he still belongs. [/tscii:77880372dd]

I have no doubt that he needs to go now, but atleast, BCCI could have handled it with a little dignity. Sorry that he is getting a rough treatment.
Dravid, better be alert in the upcoming series. His below par performance similar to the last couple of series would not do any good for him.

yeah. somehow i have some soft corner for dravid for his earlier exploits. but i think it is time for Rahul to call it a day if he cannot contribute like he used to do. Raina is doing better than Rohit and sure he should be in.
Reg kumble, tails have started wagging and he will be under tremendous pressure. I dont think selectors will dump him now and probably they may give this series as one final chance. MSD can easily take over.

9th September 2008, 03:27 PM
I seriously don't think Suresh Raina is ready for a Test Cap yet. Only Rohit Sharma (IMO) has the technique to have a decent run in the longer version. Again his problem is his lethargic attitude at times.
Dravid may be getting his last chance & I am sure he would come up with some valuable knocks (hopefully). Someone has to remind him to keep rotating the strike after he gets his eye in (may be after blocking 20 balls or so). He has become an absolute turtle these days.
Kumble should retire after this series for Dynamic Dhoni to take over.

Ganguly to retire after Australia Tests
Cricinfo staff
October 7, 2008
Sourav Ganguly has announced he will retire after the upcoming Test series against Australia.
"This will be my last series," said Ganguly at the end of a routine press conference in Bangalore. "Before coming here I spoke to my team-mates and hopefully I will go out with a winning knock."
Ganguly, 36, has scored 6,888 runs in 109 Tests, with 15 hundreds. He played Tests 49 as captain, the most by an Indian. The 21 matches won during his tenure is also an Indian record, and his win percentage of over 40 is the highest for players who have captained India in more than one Test. Starting with a hundred on debut, Ganguly's Test average has never dipped below 40.
Kris Srikkanth, head of India's new selection panel, felt Ganguly made the right decision. "I think Sourav Ganguly has been an excellent player," he said. "He has brought so many laurels as captain and player.
"He had a good chat with me and [fellow selector] Narendra Hirwani. He wants a peaceful series without any troubles on his mind. I hope he goes out with couple of hundreds. Ganguly was one of the best captains the world has ever produced and I think he deserves it."
India's selectors picked Ganguly in a 15-man squad for the first two Tests against Australia despite intense speculation on his future leading up to the selection meeting in Mumbai last week. Ganguly had reportedly considered quitting cricket after being overlooked for the Irani Cup match between the Rest of India and Delhi but India's selection panel valued his experience over youngsters like Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif.
In 311 ODIs, he scored 11,363 runs at 41.02. He captained India in 147 ODIs. His last ODI was against Pakistan at Gwalior on November 15, 2007. He is one of only three players to complete the treble of 10,000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches in ODIs, Sanath Jayasuriya and Sachin Tendulkar being the others. Along with Tendulkar, he formed a prolific partnership at the top of the order, with 6,609 runs at an average of nearly 50 per stand in 136 innings.
Since his recall in December 2006 and till the end of the home series against South Africa earlier this year, Ganguly scored 1,571 runs at 50.67, including a maiden double-century. However, he managed only 96 runs in six innings during India's 2-1 series defeat in Sri Lanka this summer.

Raina in place of rahul - good call. Dravid should go. He is blocking talents like Raina, who has great technique, temparament etc. 2 years wasted by keeping Rahul. Yeah.

He was dropped after 2008 Border gavaskar trophy. Not after this series. He played Aus's Ind tour, Pak's ODI/Test tour after this. He was the second highest run getter in tests in 2007 after kallis if i am not wrong. More videos coming today. Wait and see.
