I think we can take that as top ten fave film actors...cos if anyone saw kamalhassan after any of these heroes something is seriously wrong :exactly:
Mine
[1] Shivaji - A colossus of acting, One can write a novel on his acting repertoire
[2] Kamalhassan - The successor of shivaji but when compared to the great, pales slightly in dialogue delivery.
[3] Rajinikanth - The best of all tamil mass actors who has the style and charisma and one of the very few skilled exponents of body language expressions alongside kamal.
[4] Madhavan - One who is able to play a variety of roles with ease although it would take time before he can convince anybody of reaching the heights of kamal.
[5] Vikram - Another actor supposedly in the mould of Kamal but lacks in the body language(able toe xpress through eyes) department.
[6] Surya - Same as vikram with abit more romantic poise around him.
[7] Ajith - Has the ability to express himself through body language but slightly lacking in the dialogue delivery department.
[8] Vijay - Is very good in the body language department but his dialogue delivery is abit too loud.
[9] Dhanush - Good in the dialogue delivery department but needs to improve alot in the body language part.
[10] Simbu - Is yet to do movies that showcase his full potential..till then judgement is reserved.
[Note there are actually alot of actors that also need to be included in the list but i thought of doing it from the established ones....Jeeva is doing great and Bharath is quite reminiscent of a young kamal]

I don't understand why Iruvar is termed as a great movie..For who know MGR-Kalainjar real story ,it is a pathetic misinterpretation ..Movie can't be great just because it has wonderful songs and technically brilliant ..This movie was a huge flop ,I am really happy it got what it deserves.

Sorry! I didn't find anything great in mohanlal's acting in this movie ,other than it is his debut tamil movie.
As usual Manirathnam 'Nunipul meithal in a issue' kind of movie .As usual he tried to hide behind unattached songs with stories and pathetic one word dialogues ..but miserably failed.

I had watched..It was not that great acting to praise this much .I watched nearly 75 out of 135 MGR movies and I have a considerable knowledge in MGR's political carrier ..For me Mohanlal failed to display MGR in any sort.Sorry to say ,even sathyaraj could have done it better.
I am not degrading Mohanlal .I know he is one of the best actors .But that is only in malayalam .I watched 'Popcorn' (for nasser) and found mohanlal's acting is really really pathetic .I don't know it is because of his dialogue delivery in tamil .Otherwise I can understand malayalam 80% and watched many of his movies and admired him .But so far in tamil ,he couldn't give any impact.

You may have a opnion that whatever mani does is great .But for me his 'Nunipul meithal' in a issue ,make a contraversy as if dealing with a history or problem ,but totally misleading the plot ,irritating with one word 'aama' ,'nadakkum' ,'eppadi' etc ,so called modern dialogues like "Odi poyidalaama?" didn't really impressed me .
His real gems are mouna ragam ,nayagan ,kannathil muththamittal..that is all.IMO

Ah, a little squabble I see.
Why not start a thread Iruvar vs Nayagan. I will vote for the former, hehe.
I enjoyed both tremendously. Of course, when I saw the sources for Nayagan's 'inspiration' I was heartbroken. Cheated. But I forgive Mani. He was starting out, and nowadays even Hollywood borrows shamelessly from other films.
I enjoyed Iruvar, knowing very well where the story is based on, and also knowing very well that Mani is not going to adhere very strongly to the actual facts.
He was concentrating on the tales of two buddies. This is almost Talabathi's sequel. Its about friendship, at the end of the day.
The best thing about this movie is of course the two leads. Mohanlal did not attempt to copy MGR at all. He did his own intepretation. I like the scenes Nilavupriyan pointed out. Very good acting, clean and pure.
As Joe requested, we can agree to disagree. If not, this forum will be boring.

Grouch,
You felt cheated when you found 'Nayagan' was not original ..The same way I felt for 'Iruvar' ..when this movie in production ,as usual mani was making all sorts of publicity stund as if he is making a movie out of MGR-kalainjar relationship ..That cause the huge flop of this movie .I went to watch this movie on the day of release itself and terribily disappointed with the movie ..The reason is not just it didn't reflect that MGR-kalainjar friendship ..If it is totally different ,I didn't bother .But he made a impression as if it is MGR-kalainjar story ,but nothing conveyed constructively ,but mostly are twists from the facts ,which I felt he tried to impose his wrong ideas and understanding to the public .Fortunately ,people also rejected this movie. That proves technical brilliance, good acting ,good songa can't save a movie if it gives a twisted wrong message.I was happy about it.

Mamamia! Looking at the number of comma's in your post. Now, I am convinced that you feel very strongly against the film.
As I said, as you requested, we shall agree to disagree.
I think Mani toned down many of the historic elements. Also, there have been visible and audible censorship involved. The damnedest thing that Mani has to face was that many of those characters are still alive and they are watching. My brother always says that this film would have been better if the principle characters are no longer around. Mani could have had more freedom.
Doing a honest-to-god biographical pix is a no-no in Tamil film industry - unless everyone is dead. Judging from your reaction, I think the audience would have appreciated it if they had NOT known that it will be based on MGR/Kalaignar.
Number one reason I like the film was the performance by Mohanlal and Prakashraj. And I loved the music, brilliant. First time I got to hear unadulterated classic jazz in Tamil film. Background score is astounding...one of ARRs best.
Cinematography? Well, you know Mani. He tends to be showy. Some were good, some were pretentious.
Script? Lines were by his wife, Suhasini, and the kavithai part was Vairamuthu. He managed to capture Kalaignar's spirit, but still does come off sounding like Vairamuthu. The dialogues were solid. Its just that sometimes actors in Manirathnam's film sometimes made to sound as if they are rushing to the lavatory. Director's branding. KB has his (repeating certain phrases).
Mani is not THE best director, he is one of the good ones out there. And Iruvar, in my book, ranks high in his stable.

"Nayagan" though seems to be well copied movie of GF..... it is very well adapted to the local Indian context which is important and some exemplary acting by every one ... which is not the normal case in most of the indian movies which are copied from west.

Here goes mine:
Andha Naal: When dramas with song and dance routines were the norm, S. Balachandar made a daringly different movie. The movie made all the more special by a stylish Shivaji. Watch out for the scene, where a smoking Shivaji and his lover are silhoutted against the park background. THAT is style for you.
Uththama Puthiran: Sridhar's version of 'Man in the Iron Mask' is a treat to watch even today. Technically brilliant, I rate this as Nambiar's best performance.
Unnaipol Oruvan: The north had Shantaram, Ghatak, Ray, Sen and many others during the 50's and 60's. In contrast, we had to be content with the loud, commercial cinema, that was our staple diet. Jayakandhan's Unnaipol Oruvan was a worthy effort, capable of comparison to works of the masters above. We know him as a great writer. Unnaipol Oruvan, showed what a great director he was too. I think that was the only film he made. Pity.
Veedu: Forward to the 80's. This era saw the New Wave Cinema take center stage in Kannada and Malayalam in South India that started in the 70's. It still continues in Malayalam today. Sadly, Tamil film makers missed out on this great oppurtunity. Well, not all. There was Balumahendra. Veedu was a tribute to the 'never say die' attitude of the Great Indian Middleclass. Illayaraja's background score greatly enhaced the artistic value of this film
Sandhya Ragam: This time Balumahendra tackles old age. And Chockalinga Bagavatar gave one terrific performance.
MMKR: This will be the benchmark for all comedies and multiple roles. Kamal and 'Crazy' Mohan combine to give the best comedy in Tamil Cinema. Kamal's penchant for perfection shows in every scene, every body movement. Let's see if anyone can better this comedy.
Hey Ram: An absolute classic. That a film was not appreciated in it's own time is a phrase used for many films, but it truly applies to this. I think it was Kamal's best performance to date. As a director, he showed that, given the freedom, he can push the boundaries of film making in tamil. His passion shows in every frame.
Thaneer Thaneer: Balachandar's treatment of governement apathy and struggle for survival of India's villagers is as relevant today as ever.
Nayagan: Much has been said about Nayagan. I don't have anything to add.
Sigappu Rojakkal: Bharathiraja's finest. Bharatiraja moves so effortlessly to a city theme, after giving '16 Vayadhinile' and proves that he is a master of both. Crime thrillers don't get any better.
It was tough to leave out these, but the list has place for only 10 - Agraharathil Kazhudai, Kadhalikka Neramillai and Vedham Pudhidhu.

Nice list kannannn. Five matches between us.
You mentioned the exact scene that made me sit up in Andha Naal :-) Let me chew on the differences in our lists.
I haven't seen UnnaippOl oruvan and Agraharathil Kazuthai (though I've heard a lot about them).
I was reluctant about putting Veedu and Sandhya Raagam both on my list. Perhaps one should be allowed to list them both in one slot :-) But having to choose I think Veedu was ahead.
I watched Uthamaputhiran just once, and that too long back. But I see Thillana Mohanambal every now and then.
Sigappu Rojakkal ahead of 16 vayathinile is something I have to try a bit to come to terms with.
'Thanneer Thanneer' was a tad Balachandarish for me. He is not among my favourite directors. I know he did a lot of things in his career and all but I have never been able to thoroughly enjoy a KB movie (except Thillu Mullu). And IMO AvargaL was one of the less KBish movie. It was much less melodramatic than the unduly popular 'avaL oru thodarkathai'.

I was reluctant about putting Veedu and Sandhya Raagam both on my list. Perhaps one should be allowed to list them both in one slot :-) But having to choose I think Veedu was ahead.
I too was hesistant in putting them both, but Sandhya Ragam was very effective in conveying what it wanted to, just like Veedu. I also wanted to acknowledge Chockalinga Bhagavatar's fine acting and the fact that he carried the whole film on his shoulders. Guess it's not for nothing that people like Balumahendra and Kamal value actors from theater.
I watched Uthamaputhiran just once, and that too long back. But I see Thillana Mohanambal every now and then.
I too like Thillana Mohanambal for reasons you mentioned in the NT thread. But, much as Nambiar's character was a major asset in Uthama Puthiran, his character proved to be the sore point in Thillana Mohanambal. It just didn't fit into the movie and affected the final product.
And there are other reasons for Uthama Puthiran's presence. I am a big fan of Sridhar and feel that he deserves much more appreciation for what he has done to tamil cinema than he gets. His screenplays and dialogues were very sophisticated for his time, Uthama Puthiran being a fine example.
Sigappu Rojakkal ahead of 16 vayathinile is something I have to try a bit to come to terms with.
The reason I chose Sigappu Rojakkal ahead of 16 Vayathinile is 'cos of Bharatiraja's treatment. I think 16 Vayathinile was a little too sentimental. In contrast, Sigappu Rojakkal was a very bold and dispassionate treatment of it's subject. Everything just falls in place in the movie.
I share your sentiments on Balachandar. He wouldn't find a place in my list of favourite directors. I thought Thaneer Thaneer was different from his other movies though (probably 'cos it was adapted). Except for the 'Megam Karukkudhu' song, the movie was impeccable, with hard-hitting dry humor running throughout the movie.

Groucho, I share your enthusiasm for Iruvar. Brilliant movies failing at the BO are not rare; Karnan and Hey Ram come to mind immediately.
Iruvar was an excellent attempt at film making, but lacked in cohesion and of course in attracting the masses. It will remain as a moving testimony of Tamil cinema. Kudos to Maniratnam for even attempting the movie.
p/s: I remember reading that the movie's making was under tight secrecy and very little hype was created for it.

Best Actors
I'd rather go according to the period as it is impossible to compare different generations:
60s era
1. Sivaji Ganesan
2. Gemini Ganesh, Muthuraman, SV Subbiah, Ranga Rao, -------- will add more later
(I will have to omit MGR as he wil be remembered as a great personality rather than as a great actor.)
70s & 80s era
1. Kamalahasan
2. Sivakumar (later years), -------- will add more later
(Again I omit Rajini for similar reasons as MGR - it is true that Rajini acted well in some of his earier movies, but not enough to be in this league.)
Present era
1. Vikram, Madhavan, Surya
(Ajith showed promise in his earlier movies, but didnt keep up the momentum. Vijay is a mass artiste. Funny thing is one can't laugh while one can't cry - two prerequistes for good acting skills.)

Kinda quiet in the hub ain't it, Nov?
Anyway, interesting observation on Iruvar. Highly underrated, just because it was compared to MGR/KK relationship
Note to Joe: we discussed it earlier, Joe, and agreed to disagree. I like the way you put it
And I recall that there were not much hype as well. Originally titled Anandham, Mani tested Sarath and Sathyaraj for the roles (which, I can't recall, but I think must be for Tamilselvan role, because Mani may already have Mohanlal for Anandhan).
Performance-wise we saw a great contrast, Mohanlal subdued and restrained, and Prakashraj generous on his strong dialogue delivery and very naked on a more agressive emotions like anger and jealousy. Two sides of the same coin. It's a cliche expression, but it fits here.
I like the fact that you broke down into periods when listing best actors. What's your top ten (as per the title of this thread)? I have mine in my site. Don't intend to change it. Yours?

Phew! That's a dangerous ground you are threading. If the hubbers are much more broadminded and are able to take criticism generously, I'd have more to say about, ahem, those two stars, but I shall refrain from doing so. But your remarks are done tactfully, congratulations.

Sivaji's movies will top most for sure. I also like Raththa Kanneer, KB movies, KS Gopalakrishnan social movies, Sridhar's earlier works, Mahendran's movies, Balu Mahendra, Bakiyaraj, etc etc. Endless list.
Current favourites would be Maniratnam and Shankar. A lot of newbies look promising but need more samples for accessing.

I have posted my opinion, and therefore dont see why anyone should get riled up over what I feel.
Villain, Madhavan has shown variety; his crowning performance was in Anbe Sivam where he held his own against Kamal. No small feat that one.

Yeah. I agree. Masala is a must. In fact, films like Jeeva relies heavily on the so-called 'sentiment' that gives rise to action.
The list is not my top ten, I just wrote what came to my mind.
Don't forget some of early Jai Shankar movies. And of course, the king of action himself, Arjun. Gentlemen was a good action flick.
Kamal and Rajini actually dominates this section. Their late seventies and early eighties is full of these types of action films.

Joe, there is no authority on categorisation.
But based on the list I gave, I hope you can see the difference.
Kuruthipunal is a crime drama. It deals with issues, about personal integrity, about faith, belief, sacrifices. Action films touch on this, but they are mostly concerned about the movement of the movies. I include classics like Parakkum Pavai and Sivantha Mann which had good story background, but these two film rocks because of the pace and the action scenes.
Sathya is also like Kuruthipunal, though I would rank Sathya's fight sequence as one of the best ever in Tamil film history. But the one thing that sticks to our mind is the (Spoiler alert for those who has not seen Sathya [and if you haven't where are you from]) betrayal by the politician he serves. The very man who is supposed to be the healer of the society becomes the poison - to Sathya's eyes. I haven't seen both of these movies Hindi original, but I keep hearing that the Tamil version is better.
As for 'numpul meithal', ahem, no comments. All I can say is Kamal, as a director, is of equal calibre as Mani. I have issues with Kamal the serious-movie scriptwriter (Hey Ram characterisation, I got problem), but nobody can equal (contemporary) him on comedy screenplay. Mani, when he is not writing the dialogue, is ok.
As for touching issues...its subjective. Many like Oliver Stone, many loath him. I didn't like it when Spielberg did serious stuff (Schindler was okay, but Saving Private Ryan, while technically brilliant, is pretentious), but many will disagree.
We can have a looooooooong (peaceful) debate on Mani on separate thread. Want?
joe

Grouch0,
Thanks for the post! we can have a seperate discussion on Manirathnam later .
As a script writer Kamal excelled in Devar Magan and Kuruthipunal..Kuruthipunal has excellent peice of dialogues like "Veeramna Enna theriyuma !Payam Illatha maathiri Nadikkurathu " and many more dialogues between kamal and nasser.
kamal has very good writing skills .Interesting thing is he has two levels of writing .
1.Uncomplicated and easily understandble eg : Devar magan dilogues ,'Unnai vida' song from Virumandi
2.Complicated and hard to understand - dialogues in Heyram ,His 'Puthu kavithai' stuff he used to write in Vikatan kind of magazines ,which is very hard to understand for all.
I always want kamal to focus more on first category

Completely agree.I always wonder why he writes such complicated stuff.
Infact even his speeches fall into two categories:
1)The normal type,effective&humorous&very impressive.
2)Ones with lots of Senthamizh which makes ppl bored.

More approachable. While at it, I'd make a quick top ten of Kamal. Off my hat, lets see:
1.Guna - Untouchable, unique, lovable but disturbed, understandable but unapproachable. He blongs to Abirami alone.
2.MMKR - Screwball comedy unparalleled since Bale Pandiya. One of the best screenplay ever, and one of the best use of masking technique for multiple Kamal.
3.Apoorva Sahotharargal - Forget the technique. Its easy, but his performance made you forget to look for the platforms, the dugouts, etc. This is the best tribute to all the rattai-vesham/revenge films of the past.
4.Anbe Sivam - I've trying to tell my faith to others for so long and its tough. This film made it easy. That National Award ignored it confirms how ignorant they are.
5.Mundram Pirai - Selfless. Sincere. Makes you laugh, cry, watch in awe and later squirm in your seat. Very performance based, and beautifully shot.
6.Sigappu Rojakkal - makes you wonder why he is not doing anti-hero anymore. One of the early serious examination of a man's pshyche. Very deep. Very disturbing. As a child, it was a horror movie. As an adult, its a psychological thriller.
7. Salangai Oli - Dance, romance that never happened, and the ending with a bitter old man. No Star Trek-like makeup here, but Kamal pulled it off with performance alone.
8.Nayagan. I am conflicted about this movie. Godfather and Brando/De Niro performance still haunts me. But it should be in Kamal's top ten.
9.Avvai Shanmugi. I don't exaggerate on my praising. But can anyone else do this...ever?
10.Pathinaru Vayathinile. Tamil film lovers get their first flash of brilliance from this very, very young ex-child actor named Kamalahassan. Of course, years later he changed the spelling.

kamal has very good writing skills .Interesting thing is he has two levels of writing .

There is a big list between Kalaignar and Balakumaran. I am not a fan of films before 50s, but I hear that Ilangovan was great.
As for the in-between, you can include Vietnam Veedu Sundaram. Mahendran wrote for Tangga pathakkam.
AP. Nagarajan, Sridhar and K.S. Gopalakrishnan are directors who were excellent dialogue writers as well.
Then, you have hacks, wonderful hacks, like Aroordass and A.L. Narayanan (Latter was later).
Can anyone give me the name of those wonderful writers who wrote for Banthulu?
In the eighties, Visu did a good job in Netrikann and Mr. Barath. Not to mention, some of his better films.
Bagyaraj? He wrote for Kamal/Barathiraja's Oru Kaithiyin Dairy (and Sigappu Rojakkal? I need confirmation).
The list goes on.
Of course, in comedy, there is the indisputable Crazy Mohan.

Note for Kamal fans:
Vietnam Veedu Sundaram wrote dialogues for Soorasamharam. K.S. Gopalakrishna wrote the story for Per Sollum Pillai (when Kamal required Padikkatha Methai-type film, he thought of the original writer of that movie).

Crikey, how in hell did I forget Kannadhasan. Of course, Kannadhasan is great as well.
Yes, Nilavupriyan, even I forgot Shakti Krishnaswamy who not only wrote VPK, but also many other devotional/historical films. Joe, did he write for Karnan as well?

Crikey pt2!!! I missed Devar Magan. Oh well...those are the ones that poppled immediately on my mind. I haven't seen Devar Magan for far too long...maybe I have the tendency to stop viewing when Sivaji passes on. I had the same problem with Padaiyappa. I stopped watching halfway.
I must see Devar magan again.

:notworthy:   :D
Infact, Thala had already proved his acting skills without acting under popular directors like Mani etc :D
1.He won an award for VAALI -- SJS new comer
2. Then for VILLAN -- Even in a commercial entertainer, he managed to get that award just for his acting ! - KSR  (who is a neat commercial director )

Not sure whether u forgot or really not in ur list..
I would rate K.Bakyaraj to be the top among the directors who writes dialogue.
Almost all of his movies had dialogues by him.
His dialogues to the situations are completely enjoyable.

Ajith 3rd place ,rajini in 6th place  Poor Amithab behind Ajith
It is my strong opinion that Ajith is a far better actor than the ones below him , because a big star can be made with hype and hoopla without the real actor in him. Because of this influence, Ajith did some bad films but of course that doesnt change the fact or my opinion as you may call it that he is a very good actor who doesnt immitate anyone and call himself a clone of superstar or univeral hero! :D
You have Sivaji's photo so i think you must be a fan of Sivaji. If Sivaji is a superb actor in your opinion, AJith is behind only Kamal and Mohanlal and just like u, i have my own opinion and it's not too scientific to prove through laboratory tests and neither do box office status of films judge the acting capability!
Lastly, AJITH is not afraid of defeat while some people are and take all underground efforts to project even flops as hits, whereas i saw the quality of accepting defeat as a defeat only in Kamal Hassan and Ajith
As mohanlal said acting is not mimicry but is breathing, based on it my list [ or opinion ] is as above 8-)

his character in gokulathil seethai is good
mu.ka.muthu - MGR #2
delhi ganesh - Most of the time he is a big bore
is delhi ganesh has given voice to chiranjeevi in his first film "47 natkal" - anyone seen that movie (KB's)

This whole top ten actor top ten director thing is getting boring. So I thought why not combine? Here's my top ten actor/director (can be the other way around too). I list only Tamil because I am not so familiar with films of other language in India. Believe me, this is tough:
1. Kamal Haasan
He excels at both acting and directing. We all know about him.
2. Bandhulu
For the film Muthal Thethi, he donned NT's role in Telugu version. I loved his performance in Muradan Muthu as NT's brother.
3. K. Bagyaraj
Our very own Woody Allen. He created this Bagyaraj persona. His earlier work as director and actor are part of cinema history.
4. Manivannan
Wonderful director who popularised thriller genre . A good comedian if given a good script, and certainly a good character actor.
5. Nassar
I believe he directed about four films. His first, Avatharam, is the best, both as a director and as actor. We all know how good he is as an actor.
6. Visu
Visu can be terrific or annoying. His films can be thoughtful or plain irritating. Some of the good stuff he did, as an actor and director, are part of the best of the eighties.
7. K.S. Ravikumar
A hack director and a good character actor. Always underused as a comedian, something which he is damned good at.
8. A.P. Nagarajan
We all know him as a director, but he contributes strongly in many character roles. Guess who played Nakkeeran in the classic Thiruvilayadal.
9. R. Parthiban
Parthiban shares same criticism with Visu. Like him or loathe him. When he's good, he's damned good, when he is not, avoid him.
10.Arjun.
Arjun is the most prolific actor working today, and is very consistent with the quality of his work. The film he directed are the type of film that he can work in. A limited actor/director who knows his limitation.
I know I may have missed a few name, but these names came to my mind immediately.

But how come you missed out T. Rajendar :P
That's an oversight on my part. Terribly sorry.
People talk about Seran too. But I am one in the minority group who is not too crazy about his movies. They are decent stuff. Preachy...but well done. If I want message I send or receive SMS. Or watch old movies.
And his performance has nothing new in it. I'd say that at least T.R had some originality in him...a personality that probably was useful in a movie or two, but sucked later.
Of course there's Pandiyarajan. No new contribution from him. Or Sathyaraj who did one film; it resembled his friend Manivannan's effort. I recall even Karthik directed one film. Did he?
Or Major Sunderajan for that matter. Some of his films he did with NT is good. But he is an average character actor who sometimes seemed to be copying NT. But whatever reputation he had as a good director, "Andha Oru Nimidham" destroyed it.
Then you have a list of directors who became comedians, like Anumohan, Manobala, R. Sunderajan who have done decent movies and gave decent performances. No major impact.
There are also directors who comes out in front of the camera and you just want to chase them back to behind the camera. Those names I mentioned popped up in my mind immediately when I intended the list.
