Oru puthiya thamizh vaarthai thinamum ingae post seithaa evalavu nalla
irukkum(Word-a-day style).
This may be a good try from our part to improve thamizh. Any one can
post real unused words with meaning and oru sentence.

[tscii:0e21089764]Nedunchezhiya,
I think U are mistaken. The topic says " thinamum oru varthai". U know only (periyar) kattumirandi tamizh. How can U post "good" tamizh words?
Oh! I see, U are trying to change. Good luck.
Hail (periyar) kattumirandi tamizh kavalar nedunchezhiyan vaazhga.
Sorry for interrupting friends. I just wanted to share my happiness on seeing a "reformed" periyarist.[/tscii:0e21089764]

[tscii:9d06d0b661]Listen fool, my business isn't ur business. Your point of view about Thamizh being 'kAtrumirandi' is pure Nonsense and a made up story by ur fellow Brahmins. Don't talk nonsense here. I'm not in my 20's or 30's nor a rich guy. It's not you who is affected by the Thamizheezham War, even if you are, I'd doubt it. You don't know anything about me so don't speak nonsense. I like to remind you that this forum isn't about me but rather about Thamizh and the issues that Thamizh and Thamizhans face. [tscii:bf8caa7f2e]I am an American and I live in California. I have a couple of different language social groups. One of them is a Tamil group that I formed with some Tamil speakers who reluctantly agreed to join the club. But after a year we are all beginning to have some fun. We get together once in two weeks two weeks and try to translate some difficult passages from English to Tamil. We all try to find funny and challenging passages and try to compete in a friendly way to do the best translation without using english words. We find it very hard, as we don't have many resources by way of dictionaries.
Do you have any good suggestion for dictionaries, especially something that will help us with literature that has a lot of flowery emotional phrases, similes and metaphors in English.
For example, I am trying to translate the following phrases from a Play:
"Crucify the Insincere".
Scrap up all the moments of your life tonight"
Please help.
You can send me an email to kantakt@yahoo.com
Thanks in advance for your help.
Patricia. [/tscii:bf8caa7f2e]

While it is QUITE A WELCOME STEP
... as well as a PROGRESSIVE APPROACH...
... backed by the HEALTHY OBJECTIVE...
... to develop our Great and Rich Language Tamil,
.....by encouraging to use Tamil words to the Maximum as for possible,
I am surprised to see...
.... the PRESENT DELETERIOUS approach...
.... of UNWELCOME TREND of FANATICISM.... or Tamil-chauvinism...!!!
Is it good for the future Generation of Tamilians?
Why not we call a Computer as COMPUTER ...?
... Why KANINI....? What is the ADVANTAGE ?
... and what we will lose by calling the Incubator as INCUBATOR only or in the Tamilised form nearest to it as illustrated below leaving it to the common-folks convenience?
Why this HEAD-BREAKING EXERCISE ....?????????????????.
.... to CREATE a new NAME for an INVENTION. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..
........ having already an ORIGINAL NAME !.. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????
.... What is the necessity?
Just think awhile on our parallel experience...
... on such FUTILE ENDEAVOUR ! !
Even illiterate People call... even now... after some centuries....
.... only in the near Original forms of English or Arabic.. in practice.
... irrespective of an IMPOSITION of translated TAMIL names.
For Example.....
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Original .................Tamil-Translation..................... Practical Name in Vogue
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Bus ...........................PAERUNDHU.............. ...................... PUSSU ....
Bus-Stand................PAERUNDHU NILAIYAM................PUSTAENDU
Railway Station ....PUHAI-VANHDI NILAIYAM........ RAYIL TAESUNU
Park (Rly Stn)........ POONGA.......................................... PAARK TAESANU
Engineer....................PORHIYAALHAR.......... ....................INJINEEYARU
Supervisor............... MAELAALHAR...................................SOOPR AESARU
Jilla (District).......... MAAVATTAM................................... JILLA
Taluq.......................... VATTAM............................................ THAALUKA
Engine.........................IYANTHIRAM......... .............................INJINU
Hospital.......................MARUTHUVA-MANAI......................AASPITHALU
Radio........................... VAANOLI........................................... .RADIO
Telephone................. THOLAI PAESI...................................TELIPHONU.
-------------------------------------------------------------------.
If we say "KANINI" for Computer,
... how many people understand it...(.even amongst Tamilians)?...
... better than calling it as COMPUTER ...itself...?
... So to say...in its Original form of Language... whatever be.!!
Similarly people of other States translate in their Language, thus creating SEVERAL NAMES, how can it be understood if all such different people discuss at one meet... even if they discuss through any Indian Non-English media.
We have adequately well-experienced in such CONGLOMERATIONS!!!
....when a Tamilian says.... MINSAARAM...
... Telugus...... VIDHYUTH-SAKTHI....
....Hindiwalahs........ BIJLI....
.... For one and the same well-known word : ELECTRICITY....!!.
English people have NOT translated the Tamil Word KATTU-MARAM..
.... But call it as CATAMARON....
Similarly for the Tamil word MILHAHU- THANNEER (Pepper-Water),
.... they say MILKATHANEE ..
.
.... and such Modified terminologies has been added to their Encyclopaedia and Dictionary too !!
So..Why should we not call the COMPUTER ...INCUBATOR... ROCKET... and the like in itheir Original Names or the nearest leaving it to the RESPECTIVE COMMONFOLKS CONVENIENCE in all the Languages?
Don't we call X'RAY, TELEVISION, RADIO and the like?
Why should we not be realistic on this matter, as advised by Rajaji?

geno, the auto-ascii may not work with 'quote'. Better use '//' for quoting tamil text. I've done that for your post.

Ms Soundarya
You can post in TSCII tamil, if you have any of the standard fonts installed. (If you don't have any, try d/l-ing from http://murasu.com. This works on windows Pc's. For other platforms and tools, see http://www.tamil.net/tscii/tools.html)
Posting Method:
Let's say you are using murasu editor. Use the editor to type a test msg. Now, open the 'post reply' page, and type
Code:
Copy and paste the test msg between the 'tscii' tags, as in
Code:
and submit. That's it!
(Update: The tags are no longer required, IF you are not using 'Quote' or other tags in the post. Just copy & paste! If you are using eKalappai, in fact you can directly type in tamil. Instructions will be posted soon.)
Remember to ALWAYS 'preview' before posting and correct the post if needed.
List of fonts supported: TSCu_Inaimathi, TSC_Avarangal, TSC_Paranar, TSC_Andal, TSC_Kanna, TSC_Comic, TSC_Times, TSC_Janani, TSC_Thunaivan, TSC_Komathi, TSC_Nattai, InaimathiTSC, AparanarTSC, TSCAparnar, TSCAvarangal.

Dear All,
I have started a yahoo group called TamizhValarchchi.
I send out a "word a day" type email called "Dinamoru Tamizhchchol".
Please do sign up if you are interested in getting these emails.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tamizhvalarchchi/
I know you do discuss these issues in this group, but from a perusal of the past posts, I have realized that things can go off-topic pretty quickly here. All I do through the tamizhcalarchchi group is to send out a word a day.
Cheers,
TamizhValarchchi

Aalha-vandhaar (¬ÇÅó¾¡÷) was a newly-carved Tamil-Tiltle of Honour bestowed by the Chola-Queen. on a wise boy named "Yamunai- thurhaivan" (ÂÓ¨Éò-ШÈÅý) for winning in a Debate with a Great Scholar considered invincible.
Similar to the case of "Sri Ramalinga-Adihalh"... who is easily identified by the people just by his Title-of-Honour as "Valhlhalaar" (ÅûÇÄ¡÷) and ....
... like... "Sri Mohandas Gandhi" is easily identified as "Mahaathma-Gandhi" or even just "Mahaathma" by his Title given by the Indian-people...
The Boy Yamunaiththurhaivan is easily identified by means of his popular Title ..."Aalhavandhaar(¬ÇÅó¾¡÷)"
He subsequently became further Great Vaishnhava-Scholar... and one of his Disciples was Sri Ramanujacharya.
There is an interesting Episode behind the origin of this Title.... which I will post under the relevant Thread... "Thamizh- Thulhihalh (¾Á¢ú-ÐÇ¢¸û)" ... to-morrow the 19th instant.

I am a newcomer to this forum and I can see that many of u r looking for proper Tamil words for their English equivalents. There is a Srilankan dictionary online which gives the Tamil and Sinhalese equivalents for the corresponding English words. That seems to be good. Try this link.

Dear friends :)
Some of my observations in this thread.
Naru mukai = Naru+mukai- Naaru - like a 'nar' - seppanidappatta,Alagiya- nariya,naru,narum- ('vinaithokai' specifies three tenses past,present,future - means 'everpresent beauty'-
Mukai= mukku-mugilzh-mukai- means malar- flower.
'Adi' and 'padi' have same root means 'replica'- that is 'ontrai pola matrontru'- All words pertaining to this meaning will have adi or padi.
Sheethai is from tamil seerthai-Seer+thi- Seer means 'alagiya','seppanidappatta'.Compare the word 'seeththapazham'(a fruit) in south india: means 'alagiya-saththulla pazham. The word 'Saththu'-stuff is also from 'seerthu'.
Ratha is from tamil Erathai evolved from Eravu+thai= Erathai. Compare the word Eravanan-Eravu+vannan,Eraththiri-Raththiri etc.
Kotha is from tamil Kothai= Ko+thai- Ko means King/Queen/who topples.
Refer English - Tamil dictionary published by University of Madras to get min. 25 equivalent tamil words for an English word.
Ragamalica- Ragam- erakam - Eraku - Like eraku Unique thing with different varieties
Malikai- mali+kai = mali- 'malinthiruthal' means lot of, direct meaning is lower price which in turn means highest supply.
Compare the words having the same root, Thanga maligai & maligai-provisional store which means lot of things present in that place.

Today we shall renovate one old word ‘KARAVU’
Karavu-means ‘vancham’
Karavam-‘Vanchinam’ : root is ‘kara’ - karaththal, karakam are from this root.
Karavam – Kaaravam – Kaaram – means Vekam ( Speed / chilly taste)
Kaaravam- karakan - means 'Chevvai' - a planet to specify angry.
Akam+karakan= Ankarakan
Akam+karam – Akankaram – Aankaram – in the same way Oonkaram.
Karavam – kauravam – kauravar (in Mahabharatha)
Karavar – a Singala warrior caste in Sri lanka.
Karavam is old word for vancham which is now used only in Thanjavour dialect.
We will see about 'KADAL'- love in tommorrow / forthcoming day.

Dear friends, :!:
‘Kathal’ = Ka + th + al –Ka means ‘Protect’-- ‘Kathu’ – When man in forest used this human organ by observing peculiar sounds in order to protect himself from natural disaster and carnivores this word 'Kathu' was formulated.
Kathal- A man / woman who protect each others feelings. Kathanmai – Anpudaimai signifies the same meaning.
The later evolved equivalent word is ‘Praemam’ – ‘Pa’ or Para specifies an area
Param = A top or excellent thing (area) / God , Paran – a top hut (area) Paravai- Sea (area) whereas the word ‘Parravai’ specifies a top flying bird (top area seen by bird)
Paramai – An imagination disassociated with land / material things (a imaginative top area – imagination always connected to top)
Param + Am = Paramam- Pramam- Praemam
In word ‘Paramari’- Pa- Param specifies ‘protect’ as in the word ‘Kathal’
Hence in ‘Praemam’ Param specifies give top priority and eventually ‘protect’
Check out these words for equivalent formations.
Kasu(money)- Kutram – Thappu – Dappu (money) (Telugu)
Parppu – means ‘young bird’ - Pappu- Pappa – young baby
Parppu – Pappu – papu – Babu – Young boy (Telugu)
Parppu – Parppaan – Young elite fair boy / Double birth man which means a man of double birth by having holy thread like a bird first given birth to an egg and from egg bird comes out.
Excess ‘Kathal’ will make person ‘mental’ or ‘loose’ which makes the man even to do murder.
Hence the word ‘Kathakan’ was evolved will specify negative connotation.
You can observe positive and negative connotation words from same roots only in tamil since tamil is a natural language.
Simply we can put in this way. The phrase ‘ Kanthi kanakku’ is now to specify illegal account / unreturned account was evolved from ‘Gandhi Kanakku’ where Gandhiji made perfect public account for Congress party.

Dear friends, :)
Today let me write about very old words ‘Madu’ / 'Maadu' :!:
‘Madu’ might have evolved from a thing that is distinctively seen in flat surface. 'Madu' means a small mountain.
This ‘madu’ turned ‘maru’ to specify a mole in skin.
'Madu' turned ‘Maadu’ to specify worldly materials / ‘selvam’ / treasure which is distinctively seen after one acquires them.
‘Madu’ used in thirukkural as ‘Selvam’ – ‘Kaedil Vizhuchelvam Kalvi oruvarkku ‘MAADALLA’ matrai yavai’ –
Man after fighting acquired land and did agriculture with household animals. Having so many ‘MAADUS’ was thought to be treasure of rich man. Then 'Maadu' was used to specifiy bullocks. :!:
‘Pasu’ was called ‘Pasu maadu’.
Maadu turned ‘Mattu’/ Mattuppen to specify the bride / incoming daughter- in- laws since they bring wealth through ‘Thatchinai’ / having a bride means wealth to the family.
‘Summaadu’ is tamil word and it is not loan word from any other language. While transferring weights through heads of men a cloth is used and this is called ‘SUMMAADU’.
Sumai + Maadu. Sumai means weight. ‘Maadu’ here means ‘Pakkam’ / Selvam which is used to support the weight just like wealth supports man distinctively.
Tamil pandits should avoid the habit of telling ‘loan words’ when they are not able to find roots of a word.
Maattu – also specifies a distinctive feature of poetry.
‘Maatterithal’ means ‘tell significantly / distintively’ (Aaerrittuk kooru)

Today we analyse the old word ‘Thaai’- mother
‘Thaai’ means an adapted person unlike most of the tamil dictionaries claim. How ?
‘Thaai’ turned ‘Thaayar’ – Thaasar just like ‘Theyam’ turned ‘Thesam’-Desh.
‘Thaasar’ means a person who adapted another person’s theory.
‘Thaai’ here specifies females since they adapt males to deliver children. Note ‘Thaai’ is used only after a female gets marriage and gives birth to a child.
‘Thaayam’ from the same root which means an adapted incident happening after an activity by man. Another meaning is an asset adapted from his / her ancestor.
‘Thaayaththu’ means an adapted version of God.
‘Thayir’ means as adapted version of milk or ‘Paal’.
Thayavu , Thayai specifies request another person’s help which is adapted version of something.
‘Thayakkam’ means deject another person intension, having negative connotation to the root.
‘Thaayakam’ –The land which adapted by indegenious people.

Thiru RR, :)
The wonder behind tamil word formation is natural and readers will observe that.
Thank you for your compliments. :)
Dear friends, :)
Today we look into the old words Veeram & marham which were preserved as the quality of warrior in tamil sankam literature.
Veeram- Veeru + Am -----Veeru is from ‘Viru’ which specifies Speed. Note ‘Viru viru’
‘Veeru’ specifies certain thing which expands its magnitude and volume.
‘Viraku’ is such a word that expands its magnitude and nos. when broken into pieces from a compact wood. ‘Viraai’ also means ‘Viraku’.
‘Viral’ – exapansion of palm. ‘Virattu’ – Expand / make every one scattered from one focal point.
‘Virithal’ – an expansion in volume. ‘viriki’ a name for paddy later turned Sanskrit as ‘Virigi’.
‘Virakam’ – an expansion in feeling.
‘Virayam’- an expansion in spending.
‘Viruthar’ also means ‘Veerar’ . Note ‘viruthular’ a surname of warrior caste.
‘Viruthu’ – an award given to the heroic deeds / Veeram.
‘Veeriyam’- Speed
‘Virukam’ an old word to specify animals because of their violent nature. This turned ‘marukam in tamil ‘Mirukam’ in Sanskrit since there is no ‘va’ in Sanskrit.
‘Virucham’ – the expanded form of a plant which is ‘Virutcham’ in Sanskrit.
‘Viruththi’ & viruththam means expansion.
‘Viraiththal’ specifies the negative connotation which means ‘maraththuppothal’.
Hence veeram means an inner rigid expansion of courageous feeling to face anything in front of man.
MARHAM – Marhu + am – Stand against something.
‘Maralal’ means ‘Maarupaduthal’.
‘Muram’ – Which stand against dropping of cereals. ‘Muran’ – means ‘Marupadu’
‘Mari’ means ‘Ethirthu nil’- Stand against. Note ‘ Mariyal’
‘Maruthali’ – Talk in opposite way.
‘Matru’ means different.
‘Marai’- Make hide against something.
‘Maaran’- A person who is against to his opponents.
‘Maaru’- pahai – enmity
‘Maatran’ / ‘Maatralar’ –enemy
Hence ‘Marham’ means stand rigidly against anything. Veeram has later origin than Marham.

Dear RR, :)
'Viruththam' is a form of tamil poetry.(marabukkavithai).
Venba,Vanchippa,Kalippa & Aachiriyappa are four forms containing sychronising pattern called 'Thema' and 'pulima' which are very well known by tamil pandits. :)
An expansion of 'Thema' and 'pulima' which means some extra alphabets with them make another forms of the above poetrical forms namely Venba viruththam, vanchippa viruththam and so on.
I am not able to give illustration since I have forgotten now this poetrical aspects.
Can anybody help in this :?:

'Thema unakku thaan, Pulima unakku thaan, Maamaa Naan Unakae thaan.

Dear Friends, :)
Today we get into the word ‘Naaththikam’. Most of the people will get shock on hearing this word because they think that this word is against ‘Aaththikam’. But it is not so.
Aaththikam is from ‘Akaththikam’ means inner heart oriented Whereas
‘Naaththikam’ = Naththu + akam- Naththu means ‘Andu’, ‘pakkaththil valaru’, ‘Charnthu Iru’ – grow with someone.
Hence when there is no Aaththikam there is no Naaththikam.
Naththam – (Puram Pokku) A land unowned by anybody when it is near by some owned land.
Naththai – an insect which moves very closer to land. When there is no land there is no Naththai
Nathi- a river / Aaru Here also nathi relies on land.
Naaththi / Naaththanar – sister of husband. No husband no Naaththi.
Naathi – help – a person is specified as naathi for some other person if the first person / relation helps the 2nd person.
Naaththu- a young plant from seed.
Naaththam – Manam / smell. A quality inborn with things.
Nanthi – a sub God
Nanthini - a daughter. No mother – no daughter.
Nanthai – a rope with ploughing tool (kalappai)
Naatham – a sound of instrument
Naathan – Thalaivan – No people -No naathan
We need not treat this ‘Naathikam’ as against ‘Aaththikam’
Infact Naathikam is required when foolishness is going on in Aaththikam.
‘Aaththikam’ is purely related on internal feelings of individual and cannot be explained through words.
In course of time this makes ‘Aaththikam’ unquestionable & uninterpretable since the feelings becomes belief.
During this time ‘foolishness’ arises in society in the form of uncontrollable belief. That time Naathikam is required.
From time immemorial Naththikam was there in all societies of world.
In Mahabharatha and Ramayana Naaththikars are portrayed during Tharma starts his gambling and Thasaratha marries 60,000 wives.
‘Athvaida’ principle was thought based on Naaththikars. Buddha was a Naaththikar.
Naaththikam is a part of Inthu religion. All chiddhars were Naaththikars.
Nicholas chobarnicas who told first earth rounds sun was a naaththikar.
Pithogoras,Aristotle and Pernatcha were Naaththikars
Stalin who followed Naathika Communism allowed dead bodies cut for medical research which led Russia toppler in medical science, was a naaththikar. Louie pastieur, a Russian who invented medicine for “Dog bite” was also a naaththikar.
Protestants who live in world leading countries are Naaththikar in nature. Nabikal also taught Naaththika based visions.
Bharathiyar and Kananthasan were Naathikars in their beginning life.
It doen’t mean naaththikam is best. It supports Aaththikam.
Hence when there is no Aaththikam- No Naaththikam. Naaththikam will always renovate a religion to new path and it is not against religion but supportive only.

Dear friends, :)
Today we look into the ancient word ‘Arram’ which is associated with first civilized person in the world. We cannot find equivalent words in many languages of world for ‘Arram’ , ‘Chaantron’ since it is associated with persons who do good to the masses whereas in most of the ancient civilizations personal supremacy prevailed.
Arram = Arra means ‘ Mutru’ / Mudivu or ‘mikuthi’.
‘Aravae’ means ‘Mutrilumaka’ / Muzhumai Adaintha.
When the basic needs of a man is fulfilled in life then with his knowledge and experience he serves others to come up in life.
Illarram & Thuravarram are two parts of this fulfillment.
‘Arrakkadu’ means idu kadu / sudu kadu where dead men are perished.
‘Arra’ turned ‘Arri’ to specify ‘know more / excess things’
Arri turned ‘Aruthi’ to specify a coursed path of ‘end’ nature. It turned ‘Aarru’ to specify river of having the same meaning.
To make the endless or abundant thing to finished / known thing this ‘Arru’ And ‘Arri’ are used to specify cut. ‘Arrai’ (room) also formed in this way. If ‘Arrai’(Muzhumai) is not finished it is called ‘Arrai Kurrai’.
‘Arraithal’ also means put an end / Thundiththal which is now used for ‘Adiththal’.
This ‘Arra’ turned ‘Atra’- Atru – Atruppothal which means ‘at end / at last nothing’. It clearly specifies its negative connotation of this root.
‘Antru’ at the end of the sentence also means ‘eventually that is not’
‘Aatra’ also means ‘Mutra’
‘Aatrramai’ - mudiyaamai (negative)
Hence ‘Arram’ means a fulfillment / excess knowledge which lead to serve others or capable of making justification of anything in life.
The equivalent word is ‘Neethi’ which is of later origination.
Neethi- ‘Neeththu’ means ‘Mutrilumaka’ / ‘Mikka’. Valluvar formulated one heading (Athikaram) as ‘Neeththaar Perumai’ who experienced well and abandoned everything in life in order to serve others.
Neeththam also means ‘Mikuthi’
Neeththu – Neethu – Neethi – Needhi (Sanskrit) is the word formation.
‘Uyar neethi mantram’ for Supreme court is used. If they want ancient word they have to use ‘Uyar arra Mantram’.
Let us follow “Arram” in life.

Secondly you have mentioned that Supreme Court as UyarNeedhi Mantram. Please take this correction even though it is not specific to the discussion of this topic. Dear Friends, :)
Today we are going to see “Summa” the word frequently used in colloquial tamil.
“Summa” is sankam word. Kindly do not think I am telling “Summa”.
Summa used as ‘summai’ in Malaipadukadaam, Porunarattuppadai and Maduraikaanchi.
‘Summai’ means – Oli , Aaravaaram (Sound), Niraivu etc. ‘Summa’ is negative to that.
‘Vaara erunthan’ means ‘Vanthan’ in the same way ‘Emera / Thera mannan’ like words formulated in yesteryears. Eeru ketta ethirmarai peyarechcham / Vinaiyachcham is the grammar of such words. (Good, :!: Somewhat I remember Grammar  )
The root is sum-suma which means ‘Niraivu’- full / more.
When sound is more that is called ‘summai’
When weight is more that is called ‘sumai’
‘Summadu’ we saw earlier in this column.
‘Sumai’ might be from ‘amai’ since vowel starting word must be the origin of all consonant starting words.
Amai & ‘Amaithal’ means ‘niraithal’
Amaithi – means Salpu , Niraivu (Silent) Note : Empty vessels make noise
Amaivu – Niraivu, eyalpu,poruththam (appropriate)
Amal also means Niraivu , athikaram
Amalai means Aravaram ,Kooththu as summai
Amaluthal – niraithal
Amalan- God (niraivadainthavan)
Amali – Aaravaram, Mikuthi, Niraivu
Amaichchu – Niraivu, Athikaram (power)
Amokam – Nirayum thanmai (full) Note “ Amoka varaverpu.”
Ammuthal – When something is full hide that fullsome
Ammi – A tool used to compress fullsome
Hence I am not telling anything ‘Summa’ about ‘Summa’
In earlier columns I talked about ‘Maadu’ and ‘Madu’. In sumeria ‘Maadu’ means the same as we mean i.e. ‘an elevated part of land’

Dear Friends, :)
Today We shall see the word “Aan” (Male). It is very much relevant to look into the roots of this word since man’s primitive stages started with this word and this must be one of the old words in the world.
When we start to talk about “Aan” the modern women’s emancipation movement “Pen”s should not come to quarrel with me. :!: We will see that root in some other date. No hot feelings ladies :!: please :!:
In tamil the consonants and vowels of “TA, LA (middle),NA(big one)” are interchangeably used and the sounds are very much interchangeable. For Example ‘Kan’(eye) is pronounced as ‘Kal’ in Telugu.
‘Aadu –u’(u being suttu oli) is the word to specify males in beginning stage. ‘Aadu’ (Goat) was first man’s friend indeed in the primitive stage of man evoluation. ‘Aadu’ signifies the meaning ‘Asaithal’(moving). Man observed some heroism / attraction in that and named that attraction as ‘Aaduthal’. Now also you can observe this curiosity of knowing the moving of things in human babies / infants. Man observed the moving bodies and first of its kind he observed is “Aadu” and he used to call it so. He compared the young male goat with young male man and called both of them as ‘Aadu’ and ‘Aadavan’. If you remove the consonant ‘M’ in “Madu” you will get Aadu.
“ADAM” in Hebrew has this root.
Then wherever he found beauty and Attraction he called through that name. ‘Aadakam’ means gold. ‘Aadai’ means garments. ‘Adamparam’ means ‘pakattu’(showing). ‘Aadi’ means mirror. ‘Aatti’ means wife (Attraction). ‘Aattuthal’ means araiththal (making fine or attractive / make someone having pleasure).
Aadu turned Aalu / Aal to specify man who has power / ruling tendency. ‘Aatchi’ came from that. Indirectly it specifies the attraction he holds.
Aal turned “Aan” to specify man who rules populated areas (He attracts more people / more ladies :!: ). “Aani” – to specify any base of something. Ex. Erumbani,Ezhuthani, Uraiyani, and Punnani etc. “Aani ver”- The main / base root.
Aanai,Aandakai,Aandavan,Aandu, Andai, Aanmai, Aanavam are some of the words to specify overpowered / ruling tendency.
“Aanam” is an essential word to be noted. It was used to specify spiritual nature of man when man became cultured species. It means ‘Anbu , Patturkkodu”. When through his strong meditation and serving people man gets accredition / attraction among people and he overrule the people unknowingly. That is why this word is used to specify Meditation and concentration of particular thing.
This “Aanam” was added with consonant “Th” to get ‘Thyanam’ in natural way to specify meditation in Sanskrit.
Consonants Ch and Z was added to produce Chanam- CHEN , Zanam- ZEN and both words are now in Chinese and Japan respectively to specify meditation.

Uncle Sudhaama,
As far as I have read, ilaku or ilanku -- both Tamil words mean just "to gitter" or "to shine".
My Dictionary confirms that too -- no indication there that they mean 'prosper' or 'flourish'
Googling for 'ilaku tamil dictionary' - gave a hit on these sites:
http://www.hindunet.org/hindu_history/sarasvati/dictionary/0709TO.HTM
http://www.hindunet.org/hindu_history/sarasvati/dictionary/5422TO.HTM
where both 'ilaku' and 'ilanku' are given as 'glitter, shine' and not 'prosper, flourish
Cologne Online Tamil Lexicon - at
http://webapps.uni-koeln.de/tamil/
confirms 'ilaku' means glitter. and there was no entry for 'ilanku'.

The meaning of the word as per the poetrical sense is "Vilankidavae" - Which means "everpresent". 'Elaku' or Vilangu means Glitter / shine / Clear nature / easily identifiable. The root is 'elaku' which means 'elithu' / easy.

saatham - (because of its softness).
chOru -- (was orignally a name any soft or grain-like substance within hard covering, as the internal substance of wood and plants). e.g. sORRuk kaRRaazai, cooked rice being comparable to such substances. choRu > choRuku (cherugu) = to be placed within; choru > chORu.

SORHU - SAADHAM
In Thamiz, rice food is called as "Soru" and also "sadham"
What is the reason for these 2 words? Is there any difference in usage of these 2 words?
[tscii:9de63afa3c]§º¡Ú (SORHU) - º¡¾õ (SAADHAM)
§º¡Ú (Sorhu) is different from º¡¾õ (Saadham)... LITERALLY. But in our practical Colloqual usage we do not mean them different.
¯ñÏõ §º¡Ú... ÀÕÌ ¿£÷... ¾¢ýÛõ ¦ÅüÈ¢¨Ä... says Tamil Literature, Thiruvaaymozhi...
...categorising the °ñ or §º¡Ú.... meaning the Wholesome Composite Food-dishes, which are EATEN...
...differentiating from which are DRUNK...like Water, Juice, Milk and the like.
...and another category of Edible-leaves which are MUNCHED in mouth (š¢ø ¸ÊòÐ «¨ÃòÐ ¦ÁøÄôÀÎÅÐ) ... contra-distinctory to "Eating" and "Drinking".
So to say... Not only SAADHAM but also the Fruits and Vegetable Side-dishes form part of SORHU.... by literal sense.
Whereas º¡¾õ (Saadham) means only the COOKED RICE, Wheat or other Grains
In brief... SAADHAM is a part of SORHU.[/tscii:9de63afa3c]

hi frends,
here is my point of view
choRu - cooked rice,
this could be justified from the proverb:
oru paanai ssotRukku oru ssoRu padham. ( to find whether a pot of rice has been cooked or not - a grain can show)
saadham - items mixed with ChaRu to form saucy/fluid nature (kuzhaivu) or food item made of choRu,
this could be justified from the menu items in the hotels, daily usage in home as saambaar saadham, rasam saadham, thayir saadham, lemon saadham.. etc
and obviously arisi is raw rice
hope this helps
