Makkalae...
  One man show... One and only IR performing with Lakshman Shruti and team on 23rd April - Wesley School grounds, Royapettah, Chennai.
Heard that IR would sing 25 songs and there are other singers as well, to fill the gap when he takes a brief rest between his performance.
Any guess, songs that would feature in the list of 25..????
how many of pathos/bubbly/folk/IR classics/jolly numbers..?
We will try and guess the songs... lets see how many figures in the show...
Anyone lucky to attend the show, please do share your experience... the show would be telecast in RAJ TV later... RAJ TV appears on the sponsers list...!

I wrote down some 50 songs in random order which came to my mind and then striked out 10 of them.
Now i have to strike down 15 more songs :( while adding metti oli, Ada veetukku and Nethu Oruthathara from your list. Tough job :? Lets wait for some more wish lists and try getting just 25 out of the 100's of soul stirring and hip songs from The king

I donno whether there will be non-IR sung songs as Malaysia Vasudevan and Mnao were supposed to attend. Some Malaysia numbers I missed in the event in October.. Aagaya Gangai for example.
But I would like to hear Kodiyiley Malligai Poo sung by Maestro..that is a classic by all standards.

Metti Oli Kaatrodu

sudalai,
Two more songs came to my mind 'Oru sandhana Kattukulle' and 'Oru Kanam Oru Yugamaaga' :) I dont know how many songs from this list will be there in the show but I want the show to be equally distributed between Disco/Kuthu nos. - melodies - sad songs etc., If possible more of pep songs for it generates the euphoric feeling when in a show.
Last time When i was there there at Live in Concert I was pretty much bored with lot of melodies coming in and the crowd too started thinning out after 4 hours of exhaustion. :( But watching the same programme in my DVD again and again seems not to be boring at all :)
I think ARR is pretty talented here and he is a perfect showman who keeps the people always pepped up in a live show.

I love listening to melodies. In these current live shows, the younger audience wants to dance and be pepped up. But the older audience care for only those nostalgic songs. And with IR, just looking at the live creation of those beautiful melodies are enough. My only problem was the selection of songs.
If someone wants to dance, shouldn't they go to a disco instead? I feel that people who go to ARR's shows are more westernized and less appreciative of his gems. If people are going to dance for 'thaiya thaiya' and walk out for melody songs, their level of appreciation for good music is low.
For example, recently, I was at the SPB/SJ/Chithra show. About 95% of the audience turned up in ethnic cloths and for the most part, everyone in the audience was tame and just enjoyed the music, barring last 3 songs which were peppy. But my friend was telling me that when she went for ARR's show, the crowd was totally different, more like at a disco.
Of course, I expect that IR will probably give the right dose of peppy and melodious numbers.

IR was the only male singer throughout the show.
manjari, swarnalatha, sadhna sargam, bhavatharini, sujaya (Yuvan's wife.. for nela adhu song 'ajum ajum' bit) were the female singers.
show started at 7pm, but IR came to stage at 725pm with some amazing fireworks.
show was cut short abruptly by police at 11pm since it almost exceeded permissible time limit due to political and other usual restrictions.

23. sorgamaey endraalum (solo) - namma ooru nalla ooru (charanam lyrics totally changed to suit present situation)
could hv missed some songs in the above-list.
swarnalatha was used for just one song. too bad.
uma ramanan (yeah, i missed her in the previous list) was kinda very slow tempo initially then picked up.
IR mimicked yuvan this time too, for the song 'maanguyilaey poonguyilaey' (if am right) which drew instant applause. IR's rendition was actually very good.
purushottaman and IR violin troupe was in full attendence and played the songs. some from the lakshman sruthi group (chorus and other instruments) were present. i guess the mix would be like "70% IR troupe-30% lakshman sruthi".
poets muthulingam and pazhanibharathi somewhat annoyed the audience by their lengthy speeches which drew comments like 'enna kodumai saravanan idhu'-chandramukhi style...!!
almost every other song was in good sync with the original. the audio was better than the jaya tv show IMHO.
IR missed many 'queue' and sometimes sang off-key,off-rhythm and tried to correct himself over.
vintage songs like rukkumani vandi varudhu amudhaey tamizhaey caught me by suprise.

Frankly speaking, the support functiona were too bad in the event.. which are the sound system, the chair arrangements, the giant screen for audiencing sitting in the back to view, the anchor (abaswaram was just a lifeless dud).
But Raja's songs made up for all these. His on stage innovations and comedy were excellent.
I just couldn't stop laughing for a speciic instant.
He started singing one song and to his dismay he couldn't find the song lyric in the notebook. In the middle of the song he uttered "paattai kaanum" to the audience. He was able to see humour in the shoddy arrangement.
Jaya TV rocked in andrum endrum... Raj Tv is way below the DD days..
Moreover, how do u expect a 63 year old man to sing non-stop for 3.5 hours just because the u started the event late?
Thumbs down for Lakshman Sruthi.... Thumbs up as always for Raja...He was the brightest silver lining in a rtaher gloomy and shoddy set-up yesterday.
Hope my comments would have lot of takers here.

Buggle, Vivek's absence was one of the fiasco's mentioned.
I do not have any words to describe this further. I am planning to bad mouth about Laksham Sruthi for screwwing this terrific event.
I dount whether Raja will ever do such shows after this. I already noticed that his commitment was not 100%... mainly due to tiredness of singing all songs non-stop..

Well, singing nonstop for 3-4 hrs, by someone who doesn't sing at shows regularly. Plus, age factor(63). It doesn't really work. He should have given the ladies some solos.
Guess the show was organized in a hurry. Same happenned for Jayatv, organized in a hurry, but with the excellent support of other singers and IR's orchestra, it was enjoyable.

I would disagree that the event was arranged in a hurry.
They had dinitially planned for March 23.. snce they couldn't get Nehru stadium that day... the postponed the event to April 23... but donno why they changed the venue to an open ground on a hot april month.
Nevertheless Raja power ensured that the ground was full.. But by around 9:00 PM..
I have opened in public on this now...I just wanted to ensure that these things doesn't happen again..
Do U know how other MD's shows are organized.. why on earth such things are happening when a geniuos is in action?

Renault,
I dont think half ground was empty at 9... ** strongly disagree **
Atleast 70% of the crowd was there till the end of the show... People who left after 9:30 were either ladies, or people who have come with family and kids or using public transport....
IMHO, Prime reason might be...
1. Public transport... people were skeptical about getting back home... non-availability of bus services late hours... exorbitant auto/call taxi fares....
2. Dinner/snacks/etc. (People were not able to find some good quality food at reasonable rates..
agree on the general grievances...
No proper parking facilities
No proper toilet facilities also. Dont know if this would matter though.

Have been thinking this the last couple of days:
IR has done some fabulous music for telugu films. If a big organization (like MAA TV/Gemini TV) sponsored the show, I think it would definitely be another treat for music lovers.
I have a feeling that lack of organization as a whole, and miscommunication, may have caused the poor results for Lakshman Shruthi show. It would be best just to let IR handle everything on the musical side.

[tscii:fe16ac2850]one thing i observed was, throughout his singing, IR was playing his harmonium ... and at the beginning of the show (2nd song I guess), he was listening to his harmonium if it actually provided any sound çoz the orchestra was loud that it (harmonium) could not be heard.[/tscii:fe16ac2850]

Dear Friends,
IR - Live One Man show organised by Lakshman Shruti was a great success with lots of musical entertainment only and only Maestro.
If I am right, there would have been 15000 strong crowd in Wesley Ground.
(He came at 7.20 PM and starting singing Janani Janani and ended singing at 10.55 PM i.e 3.30 hrs of non stop singing only by IR and in some songs with female singers and chorus) Abaswaram Ramji Compered the show.
I am enclosing below the list of songs sung by our music king-Maestro. (It is in order)
jananj janani - Only IR
amudhey tamizhe azakiye - IR and Bhavatarani
idayam oru koil - Only IR (This is first song IR wrote as per his records)
adi aatadhi - IR and Sadhana Sargam
sorgame endraley - Only IR (IR changed the lyric to match today's tamizhakam)
indha maan unthan - IR and Swarnalatha
raaja raajathi rajan inda
kaadal oviyum paadum kaviyam (IR and Swarnalatha or Sadhanan-confirm)
thenpandi cheemayile
naan thedum sevanthi poo ithu ( IR and Mathangi)
ennai thalata varuvalo
ilamai enum poongatru ( IR, actual song in film was sung by SPB)
antha nilavatan (IR and uma ramanan)
maanguyile poonguiyle (IR and Matangi)
*********muthulinga
thendral vandu (IR and Sadhana Sargam)
kannan oru kai kuzhandai -Film Badrakali (IR and uma ramanan)
katril varum geethamee (IR,Bhavatarani,Sadhana)
maanjolai kilihona (IR, said he did lot of practice for this song to sing well)
anna killi*** (As requested by audiance, he sung this song without any rehersal)
nila athu vaanu mela (IR,bhavatharani)
orambo orambo (IR and Chorus)
veetuku veedu (IR)
en mana vazhvil sirai (IR
en thayuya enum koileye (IR)
Furhter on request from audiance, he sang few lines from songs
Idhu Mounamana neram ( Sung in Telugu from film saagara sangamam)
Naadan En Jeevaney
Before IR appeared on stage at 7.20 PM, Bhavatarani started a song from Geethanjali Album - Ennakorun Annai at 6.50 PM and then a chorous song by Lakshma Shruti group - Kaamakshi .. (Geethanjali Album).
Lakshman shruti group also sang the song Poovara Sennni Mannan from Thiruvasakam (It was a good attempt) and then just before IR came, group of children aged around 5-6 (probably from Abaswaram Ramji's school) recited slokas.
When IR came to stage, there were lot of Vaana Vedikay(Crackers in air) and then our Maestro started with Sivastatyadi bhavadi... (janani janani song)
He also spoke on Kavingar Kannadasan, how fast he writes lyrics,S.D.Burman,etc and he was also joking a lot.
The Crowd really enjoyed the show and it was worth a show on this Summer sunday evening.
Hope I had been able to give some details on the show.

Hi
i saw this programme yesterday in RAJ TV. Remarks from IR about KANNADASAN before singing ILLAMAYNEVUM POONGATTRU.
" NO ONE LIKE KANNADASAN IN THE WORLD. I MET HIM DURING "POONKKU THANGA MANASU" RECORDING. PEOPLE WILL GET IRRIATED THE WAY KANNADASAN BEHAVE DURING SONGS COMPOSISTION(USE TO SMOKE LOT AND OFTEN SPLITS IN THE CIGAR TRAY)WILL NOT LISTEN CONTINOUSLY.
GKV told the song sequence and started giving his tune.
Sequence is rented housewhere hero&heroine singing and rain started pouring. KANNADASN all of a sudden asking GKV to repeat the tune again and just telling THEN SINDHUTHEY VANAM asking agin the tune UNNIYE ENNIYE THALATUTHEY. and finsihed everthing in fiftenn minutes time. For the same siutation kannada writer took more than a week.
IR again met KANNADASAN in THYAGAM MOVIE in VASSANTHA KALA KOLANGAL. IR just started singing the tune and instantly he got the lyrics.
While answering Muthulingam reuest to change the MUTHAI THIRU TUNE IR politely refuse to change it and praised TMS singing and the tune. finally obliged. here he recollected how MSV used same SANDHAM for POONAL POOGATUUM/PESUVATHU KILLIYAA/MAMBAZTHU VANDU.
After singing ILLAMAIL ENNUM POONGATRU . while acknowledging crowd applause IR said 'HOPE I SANG CORRECTLY . SPB DID GOOD JOB. but I must acknowledge yur greeting as a composer who taught SPB .
He mentioned about SDB and what are all the question he wil ask before composing like looks of heroine dress/ornaments etc.
He told SADHANNA SARGAM to sing that song and pointed out how SDB brings all these in particular song.
Can anyone write about ILLAMAI ENNUM POONGATRU composistion ?
I think . EVER GREEN COMPOSISTION FROM IR.
IR able to sing perfectly (what I meant is without changing words and not deviating from origingal ).
BIG SALUTE TO IR.

Thrilled to hear one of the best melodies of Raja through his own voice !
though he slipped a bit during Yez pirappum inaindhirukkum ( which he should have sung after waiting for the thalam to extend ) .......
No doubt KJY and PS added flavour through their scintillating improvisation and modulation but when you hear this song from IR himself its something special !
Raja is Raja !!
Fond memories of 70s ......

The Genius who mesmarised everyone – the evening of 23rd April 2006
The programme was a different experience to one and all who listened to Raja’s special numbers live on stage with lot of explanations on musicicians, lyricists etc.
The power of strings section was enacted by the Poomalaiye Thool sera vaa instrumental number and we could enjoy the pieces of strings section again and again when they balanced the instruments.
1. Starting number rendered by Bavadharini – Yenakkoru Annai brought the audience to form to tune themselves to the programme followed by 2) Chorus rendering of Kamakshi - Kamakoti Peeta Vahini.
3. The suspense that Raja would number a Thiruvasagam number was broken by the Lakshman Sruthi Troupe Singer who performed perfectly with the voice of Raja and spell bound performance of the Orchestra with full effect of Symphony is remarkable. Who will get such a chance to listen to Poovar Senni on Stage.
4. The children of Ramji’s troupe performed a short invocation as a prelude for introduction of Raja on stage.
5. Janani Janani starting with usual sloka by Raja in Kalyani can have no words to express the feel of Goddess Shakthi when he rendered ‘Shakthi Peetamum Nee ‘ line.
5. Amudey Thamizhey from Koyil Pura is a classical number with scintillating Brass Section on stage. IR exactly drove home the idea of Classicism in Tamil Music through this song – ‘Isai Irundal Maranam yedhu’ a line which aptly conveys the greatness of music.
6. When IR explained his song when Nehru Departed had the feel of pathos so beautifully rendered in Subha Panthuvarali.
7. Idayam Oru Koyil is the number first written by Raja for movie which had three charanams giving extensive work to the Strings Section and interludes following on even charanams also.
8. Adi Aathadi with Swarnalatha could very well substitute the voice S Janaki . The orchestra had several parts to be performed simulatenously and how the workshop would have been of IR while recording this song – we could imagine then.
9. There was a powerful message to the WOMEN FOLK in the revised charanam version of Sorgamey Endralum in Hamsanadham base where it meant ‘ PEY ULAVURA NEERATHULAY PENGAL ULAVALAMA ‘ in the name of software industry. It appears as if still Kannadasan has left a legacy behind him in the name of IR.
10. One of the highlights of this programme where IR beautifully explained the genius musician S D Burman’s composing ability in Raadha Ne Male Jathi sung by Sadhana sargam in which SDB meticulously conceived each and every aspect of Heroine’s depiction in the melody. It is imaginatively explained about the shaking of heroine’s Lolakku in the melody.
11. Raja – Eppavum Ne Raja needs no explanation. The rhythm player solely managed very well the composition and a promising display for younger generation rhythm players who depend on sequenced rhythm.
12. Kaadal Oviam from A.Oyvathillai has a superb chorus section especially how the Rig Veda verse synchs with the Church bell sound landing from f# to D note is a /the best selection for the day.
13. The most expected Then Pandi Seemaiyely was delivered perfectly the virtually tears will flow down from one’s eyes when he renderes ‘Azhudha Manasu …”
14. The Song of Raja which gained momentum from Jaya TV Programme had usual once more request – Naan Thedum Sevandhi . The strings balancing was so perfect than Jaya TV programme. Thanks for organizers. Keyboard Section in third BGM was very beautiful.
15. The surprises which IR brought is singing other singer’s songs. Yennai Thalatta conveyed a different mood when he rendered it.
16. The highlight of the day is tributes to Kannadasan. When he explained Then Sindudey vanam, Vasantha Kala Kolangangal composing sessions. Ilamai Yenum Poongatru was the tail piece of that explanation.
17. Anda Nilava Thann Nan Kayil with Uma Ramanan had a good folk flavour. One could very well appreciate the change of voice line of Raja in that song then in 1986 with that of today.
18. Karagatakkaran songs as he told was done directly in recording theatre as there was no time for composing sessions. The violins were so beautiful when in charanam the songs to A major section beautifully filled by its inversions.
19. A lengthy discussion with Kavignar Muthulingam on Muthai Thirunagai, Manguiley, etc and the Raja’s explanation on Chandas limitation as “Thathi thana thathi thana thana nana “ and how he presented the same chandas in thakathimi thakajunu in Sudha Dhanayasi is good research and creativity.
20. Thendral Vandhu Teehndum Podu is a song with very different pattern in Pallavi and I think Purushotham did a perfect job in coordinating the rhythm section and strings.
21. Kannan Oru Kaikuzhandi with Uma Ramanan had two charanams and the audience had the opportunity to listen live to 3nd BGM which is mostly not available in some cassettes .
22. Oru Naal Oru Kanavu in Yaman with Sadhana Sargam and Bavadharini brought Younger generation to charge and of course everyone.
23. The touchest song performed in Manjolai Kili Dano. Tabla players and Indian Percussion section took a painstaking effort in performing. The message we could make out is how Jayachandran would have the complicated timings in the song in 2nd charanam .
24. Annakkili Unnai Theduthey less BGM could take people to yester years. Flutist never missed the opportunity to render original pieces as interludes.
25. Puzzled by the request of the Audience IR sang in succession pallavis of Nadiyil Aadum, naadan En Jeevaney from kadal Ovium.
26. Nila Adhu Vaanathu Meley was a peppy number which goes very perfectly with Janakaraj’s voice modulation left the audience to dancing time.
27. Oram Po Rukumani Vandi was beautifully organized by IR. The chorus was brought to front of stage and the in between voices/situation enacting was done perfectly by chorus. It gave the listeners an opportunity to still go to yester years of IR’s composition and unearth many such musical researches in BGMs.
28. Ada Veetukku Veetukku is an expected number whenever IR performs on stage.
29. Yen Manavanil from Kasi is an extraordinary rendition by IR and the character element as ‘KASI’ could be made out from IR’s voice. It is better young singers do hard work to learn rendition of such songs from IR.
30. Amma Paatu is “YEN THAYENUM KOYILIL” rendered with pathos was the last song rendered when it was 11.10 pm.
The programme contained anectodes and incidents from Kavignar Muthulingam, Mu Mehtha Pazhani Bharathi. The most attractive feature no VIPs were allowed on stage and the programme was for IR alone and none others.

I watched the One Man Show DVD IMHO it is the worst show I have ever seen. Even amateurs would have done a better job in singing. IR messed up most of his songs and also SPB, Jeyachandran, Yesudas etc songs too. It looked as if there was no rehearsel done before the show whatsoever. The instrumentalist did a great job even though a botched performance by IR. For every botched song he was excusing himself by saying "I know u (fans) will forgive me for that". This show portrayed what a egocentric individual raja is.

Kannan Oru Kaikuzanthi is a masterpiece because of yesudas soul stirring singing plus IRs excellent score. If you really want to forget that song then listen to IRs version. IR is good for only Orampo, Nila athu Vaanathu Melae kind of songs and some exceptions like Poo Malaiayae, Naan Thedum Sevanthipoovithu

IR did well in the following
Janani Janani - Started well and ended well
Amuthae thamizae - Very good. IR tried to correct bhavartharani (in the movie also father correct the daughter, but here its in many places than movie) and eventually gave up. Watch the crowd applausing for "en ninaivum uyirum isaithaan isai irunthaal maranam yethu" - only ir fans knows what the word means. isai - illayaraja.
Kannadasan's song on Nehru's death - watch him giving instructions to the tabla guys on the stage to back his song - very nice one. In this particular song, Kannadasan impressed me more than IR. What a lyrics. "Saavae unakkorunaal saavondru vaaratha, theeyae unakkorunaal theemooti paromo" - Class.
Thenpaandi cheemaiyilae - Another class. He attemped to sing the 4th time in KH voice - which is unique by itself and obvisouly IR didnt do a good job there but nevertheless the attempt itself was good :)
Maanguyilae - the original song as well as YSR version rocked. Another version he did also was very nice (not the first one, the second one).
Orambo - was good, but unexpected
Kadhal oviam - IR sang this with out any effort and to perfection. Swarnalatha struggled a lot (or atleast her facial expression wasnt good)
Naan thaedum sevvanthi poovidhu - Both IR and Manjari sang very well.
Ilamai enum poonkaatru - Well you cant compare SPB and IR. IR himself acknowledge that SPB would have sang better. Good attempt though :)
Yennai thaalatta varuvaala - pretty good
Rest of the songs - so many issues, either with sound system or with singers (including IR) or ppl didnt play the instruments properly. Looked little bit like amature attempt and probably didnt have enough practice.

Me too heard Kannan oru kai kuzandhai ....
IMHO, IR sang well ....ofcourse we cant compare with KJY for he is a professional singer
the only flaw I could find during this song was when IR hastened the words EZPIRAPPUM without giving the gap for the veena interludes ......
Its a looooong journey for him probably 30 looong years & he must have missed the count .........
Infact I am keeping this song of IR ( this programme ) as something to cherish
Uma ramanan did well for PS
