Generally in any vrath, onions and garlic are not eaten for the whole day. Pickles and anything cooked any day before is not to be consumed. Most South Indians do not eat rice or rice based foods on that day. The point is to keep away from Rajasic and Tamasic food. Rajasic foods are those which are very pungent like chillies. Tamasic food are sour and fermented ones. Only Saatwic food is allowed, which is basically sweet and fresh food. The best is to go for fresh fruits and fruit juices, basically liquid food.

Goes without saying that you must have only lacto-vegetarian food during days of vrath. Food to be cooked only after bath and worship. Not to be cooked by women in periods etc... all the general rules in Hinduism. Have only one meal a day.
