Hi All,
I am going to have a baby around the start of May 06. Unfortunately none of my Parents or In laws can come down for the delivery. So I am looking for any indian food & recipes which new moms can eat safely after the baby is born .
For eg I have heard dals are not good to have immediately after a delivery , bec they don't help in healing the stitches etc.
I am looking for recommendations from Moms who have had diff eating pattern during this time..

I'm pregnant too and hope to deliver by Sept. this year.. I might not have my parent's or in-laws duing m delivery too. I collected the foln. information for after delivery diet.

Hello Neha,
You can eat daily fresh small Beetroot is good for hemoglobin. When I was pregnant, my hemoglobin is low. Then my mother told to take daily this. It was really worked for me...after 2 months, my hemoglobin came normal. If you have any cold or something please ask your doctor first.
You should take small amount "Asafoetida" (Perunghayam) daily. If you are non.veg., you can eat shark puttu (Suraa puttu with garlic and ginger). When you eat dhalls you should add some amount of asafoetida (Perunghayam) and garlic.

After delivery,most people may have gas truobles,constipation etc.So it is wise to avoid gassy foods in the beginning.Also if u r breastfeeding,u want to increase ur milk supply and avoid gassy foods bcoz they can cuase tummy troubles for the baby.
Avoid potatoes,daals,cruciferous veggies like cabbage,broccoli,cauliflower,etc for the first 6-12 weeks.
Having spinach,fenugreek,mutton,moong daal(sparingly),milk,eggs,liver,salmon and other fatty fish like sardines.Drink lots of water.this is essential for abundant supply.All foods are safe to eat,but try to avoid too spicy foods.
If u suffer from constipation,prune juice,spinach,broccoli,fiberous foods are good.
If u have gas,try ginger ale(non-alcholic version),or make at home.Add more ginger and garlic to ur diet.
Otherwise u r able to eat anything.Enjoy!!!

Hi!
I just delivered in feb and in addition to the foods listed below that you need to avoid, I am also avoiding arbi & bhindi. In bananas, try to avoid the green variety and eat the small yellow ones. Also completely avoid mangoes of all types after your delivery. Avoid eating chole, rajma and any other heavy pulses/beans.
I completely avoided red and green chillies for the first one month. INstead of these, my mom added a powder of 1 cup black pepper corns, 1&1/2 cup dhania seeds, 1/2 tsp methi seeds. In little ghee roast the above three seperately. Add 1 tsp unroasted jeera and grind to a powder. You can use this masala powder for both veg as well as non veg dishes. Just use this instead of all the other powders u would normally use.
As long as you breast feed (if u plan to do so) avoid excess oil and spices.
In case ur child develops colic, u can avoid milk and dairy products, citrus and dry fruits (as per my pediatrician's recco).
In fish, mackerel is also a good choice. Basically and fatty fish is good as it has omega 3. But completely avoid prawns and any other shell fish also for good measure.
If i can think of anything else I am doing I will let you know. Basically, if you try anything new (like home remedies etc) for the first time, try it for 3-4 days so that you can figure out if it agrees with your baby, and then add anything else that is new.

Neha, Congrats!!
After delivery try to include oats, badham in ur diet, it helps in milkproduction if u r planning to breastfeed.
Cook and freeze foods like rasam and some veg curries before itself as for the first week u wont have any strength or time to cook.If u eat chicken u can bake the chicken as it is easy and healthy too. as fried foods are not good at that time. It is the same with baking fish, avoid all big fishes which have high mercury content.

Additionally, for good lactation, my mom reccommends including garlic (as much as you can eat. you can even boil some peeled pods in little milk and have both the garlic and the milk), shark, and suran (yam) preparations.

Hi,
I had my second baby in Dec '05. She is now thrieving 3 mons old. My mom is her to help me. During the second time around, I watched my diet more carefully. Add enough proteins to each part of your meal. You can add dal slowly one at a time and see if baby develops gas or not. If any dal or food gives baby gas avoid it. Eat badam and walnuts and eggs. It will increase the DHA and RHA in the breastmilk which is important for babies brain. Take your prenatal vitamins as long as you breastfeed. Drink lot of water. Also drink a glass of water/liquid before each breast feeding sessions. It will help milk let down.

You should not avoid any food without a good reason.u need a well balanced diet.for example ,avoiding whole milk can lead to defieciency in calcium.breastfeeding mothers require 1000-1200mg calcium a day(4 cups milk)try an elimination diet i baby deveolps colic and after finding out the offending food add other foods back/
