A sense of DEJA Vu set in in the morning my dather walked in with the news of my maternal grandfather's demise. On the same morning, after a not so deep slumber, I had told my sis about the strange dream I had previous night.
Dad's tranfer to mumbai from Blore jolt my grandpa. On the departure, he held my hands and said " I guess I shall not be alive when u come to Blore next"
One night, I dreamed of grandpa pleading that i come to Blore to see him for the last time. I got up hoping the dream wld never come true. But afew hrs later, my dad revealed that my grandpa has passed away that morning.

Distance did make my grandpa's about his death?. A few days after his ddeath, my grandma revealed to us that the last utterance of my grandpa, just a few words before his death, with his regret at not being able to see his daughter and grand children

She slowly turned left to look at the desktop calendar which reads March 28 as today's date !

Sharmi could not remove her eyes from the calendar. She couldn’t believe the fact that Shree was talking about a day which was supposed to happen. Sharmi thought “Its impossible” giving a look again at the invitation

The ball of fire started to fall below the horizon, that being an atmospheric phenomena. The MASTER clock on the wall was showing thirty minutes past five.

Sharmi walked down the street towards Shree’s house. A big mountain of dilemma keeps disturbing her. She didn’t like the way Shree spoke to her this morning, so with the usual payback mind, she didn’t want to go to the temple along with her. She crossed her house and kept walking.

Sharmi wouldn’t have taken few steps from Shree’s house, when the innocent and impeccant smile of Shree. “It was very bad of me to have such a small mind, namba friend thane avo” thinking this, she turned back and walked towards Shree’s house.

She reached the house, and entered the house calling “Shree, Shree … “

She slowly entered the mantapam and went to the left to see Shri Hanuman being adorned with chenturam. She folded her hands and took them towards her forehead bending slightly showing her intense praying. Then she moved around anjaneyar to enter into the chakkarathazhwar sannidhi.

The moment she entered the sannidhi Sharmi could not take her eyes off from ................

The moment she entered the sannidhi Sharmi could not take her eyes off from ................

HIM ! Aswath ...

Sharmi's face revealed an unknown happiness with her sweet little eyes rolling down to meet her finger tips. She slowly curled her lower lip inside her moyth with her upper jaw silently touching her beautiful mole under her lower lip. She then smiled and ran past him.

Aswath turned both his browny black eyes on her, rising high his right thick eyebrow to mark a smile with a twinkling dimple on his right cheek . He turned back to Narasimhan, and slowly tilted his head backwards and nodded twice to see Nara smiling n walking back with a wave !

Aswath turned back towards the sannidhi and quickly walked with his striding nearly six feet height. He was lucky enough to join the line behind Sharmi. She, waiting for this opportunity, touched his right leg thumb with her salangai to make a shrilling sound, hearing which she turned to the front and kept smiling until she could see a girl with long hair standing near the entrance.

Sharmi immediately recognized her, shocking Sharmi tried to move to the front towards the other queue, where Aswath tried to follow but had no choice to stay after seeing Shree.

Aswath’s gruff face showed it all, he moved out of the line and walked towards the entrance.

Sharmi concentrated on Shree, walked towards the crowd, striding n requesting for a way to reach Shree. She still was trying to push on to her,even faintly tried calling her, but in vain.

Shree entered the sannidhi, and Sharmi quickly managed to enter behind her and stood on to the left hand side of Chakkarathaazhwar. After the haarthi, by the time Sharmi waited for the chadari, Shree started walking .

Sharmi too was forced to move, but a feeling and a fear stopped her n made her wait for the theertha chatari. After that , she started to run towards the praharam.

Being a Saturday and with exams nearing, there were a lot of students who were doing prathakshinam. Normally children do 45 prathakshinams which would approximately take an hour for a regular walker. Sharmi was really helpless in finding Shree amidst a crowd of almost hundred n odd people, but Shree’s favourite thavani showed her off to Sharmi.

She waded thru the crowd, slowly and managed to reach closer to Shree and almost tried calling her,while she had come to the back of the praharam, where ppl stand to see the Yoga Narasimhar behind Chakkarathaazhwar. Sharmi peeped in for a second and took her right index finger n touched her chin and her eyes closed. She then started running again towards Shree, but could only keep a hand on her, which startled Shree and she turned aroundto see Sharmi, gasping.

Both were nearly waded off like a river taking what all that comes on its way … They both reached the entrance,with Sharmi doin the namaskaram. Everytime, the person who used to performa namaskaram first would be Shree, but today she was standing as a dumb statue.

Seeing this behaviour, Shree who is kneeling down, holded Shree’s right hand and signaling n pulling her down. But she was not able to move shree. After doin the namaskaram, she slowly got up, caughr Shree by her hands and pulled her harshly outside the temple premises.

“Enna vidu dee” said Shree, pulling her hand away from Sharmi, started to run

“Ei, Shree, nillu….. “ when Sharmi shouted and started to run, but was stopped by a huge hand holding her hand firmly. Sharmi turned back with a perplexed face to see……..

Sharmi gave a bare look to Aswath,with him holding her hand firmly, turned back to see the direction at which Shree was running. Sharmi turned back to Aswath, after finding Shree's long hairy head missing amidst the crowd.Sharmi had her eyes watery and used her thumb to wipe it off, before Aswath sees that.

"Avalukku edhukku ivvalavu importance kodukkara" sneered Aswath "Avalukku importance kuduthu kuduthu dhaan, unna madhikkaama pora"

"Avo appadi ellam illa Aswath" "I know her"

"naan unkitta evvalavo dhadava solli irukken, just ignore her, she is not worth being ur friend"

"Enough Aswath !" so saying she slid her hand from his, and glared at his face to watch the smiling curves turned down. "Avala pathi enakku theriyum" so saying she started to walk towards the crowd while Aswath was still watching her and was startled to feel a hand on his shoulder.

"Enna innum mudiyalaya ?" was Narasimhan's voice from behind.
"Naan ninaichu mudikkamiyaa? as usual, avaloda prachana dhaan" "enakku romba problem kodukkara"

"Munnadi ellam Shree un kooda nalla dhaana da pazhagi kittu irundhaa, ippo enna aachu? "

"Hmn.... ellam poga poga seri aayidum" "hmn ... inga paaruda ellam edhukku thaan ezhuthu pothikittu kovilukku varangalo?"

so saying both of them laughed loudly and Aswath put his arms over narasimhan's shoulders and they both started to walk !

Aswath had a unique style of taking a fag

He always uses a pipe to keep a distance between his lips n the fag, he used to take drops of clove oil which being evenly applied on to the fag and he used to keep the fag pipe between his little finger and ring finger and uses only his left !

"Madura, tea enga !" "Idho anne, strong tea"
"konda, konda ...."

He never mixes anything with his light, so finished his fag and carefully put the bud under his Red Tape shoes and put it off !

"Maataamala poiduvaa, Simma ... paathukitte iru"

Now only I pulled some time to read "A Learned Yes" .. When I first saw that thread (abt 10 days ago) , it was already 10 pages long so skipped at that time saying "after sometime".. But now I am tied to it... Very interesting.... Gr8 going.. U r an excellent writer.....

Sometimes I have these kind of premonitions.. I picturise myself going for a particular house, meeting certain strangers.. That will not have any meaning then.. But once on the scene I will be able to recollect my earlier thoughts (or should i say dreams)

Thanks for ur valuble feedback Rami ! Well to start with, the feeling of foreseeing is not Deja Vu ... the sense of already seen is Deja vu

For instance ... in the film Matrix ... when the guys are returning, Keanu will notice a cat shrugging n moving, and will see the same scene again ! he will have a doubt and tel it to others ! The lady would say. that if there is some change in the pgm, it creates deja vu, a sense of danger !

tis just to explain something that is already seen ! But on the other hand, Nooraavadhu naal is something to do with Pre-noticing by means of dreams ! hope this clarifies :-)

In 1997, u r there in the same coffee shop, with the same dress, with ur same childhood friend n the corner table and when the coffee spills, u will have a sense of deja vu which will remind u that a similar incident has happenned sometime earlier :-)

That is deja vu ... the sense of Already Seen !

"ei, ippo adha pathi ninachukittu kavala padara neramaa, examkku munnadi naal varaikkum dhaan enna padikkanum nnu yosikkanum, exam annikki padicha dha eppadi nyaabaga padithikkanummnnu yosikkanum... seri serii ... time aachu, All the best ... nanna pannu" so saying Sharmi sprinted towarads the exam hall with her favourite pink salwar. she considers that salwar lucky one too.

Shree started walking silently with her fingers pondering on the last chapter of the Computer Networks book by Tenebaum... while she was suddenly tipped off by a bag and a huge hand trips her books too.

She was almost about to fall, but she caught hold of the parapet but the big book fell onto ! she was unable to control the anger and her eyes turned red and she turned back to see Aswath tipping off, laughing with his friends

Shree, with her face still red watched him rising his forearm and kissing his bracelet. Shree turned her face as if she was slapped and she looked up again to find him tipping off into the exam conference hall !

The conference room was atleast as big as a kalyana mantapa ! with around 600 chairs and tables arranged for the students to write their exams.

Some gals were turning the pages quickly for a last glance. Some young lads were busily checking their pockets and watches. The invigilators were engaged in warning the students who still were holding their books.

With the Principal having a quick look at the verandah, the students wished him. He patted a guy on his back and wished him all his best !

The distinctive ring of the alarm bell, made the students to break off towards the exam hall. Some guys were still busily searching for their numbers quoted with a chalk piece on the wooden tables, finding some corner table's chalk scripts were rubbed off by the rain that poured the day before !

Finally the students were seated and there was absolute muteness throughout the conference hall.

Shree was seated two seats behind Sharmi where they have Shankar and Shobana in between them. The Second bell gave way clearing the muteness spread across the conference hall. The invigilators start distributing the question papers.

Aswath was the fourth guy sitting in the second row of the seating arrangement. He was giving a curvy look at the girl sitting in front of him, Aruna. She was in her half saree, without the knowledge that her saree pin on her shoulder giving off. Her saree on the shoulder has moved a bit with her flap inside being visible a little. This one was the attraction of Aswath towards her, he was keeping his thumb in between his teeth and smiling. He was startled when he was hit by the invigilator with the bunch of question papers, on his right arm shoulder.

"Watch ur paper, young boy " said the voice with a firmness.

"Paper dhaana, kudu .... kuduthutiya ... enna look, poitte iru ... vandhutaaru vengayam"

The invigilator was really pissed off on his words.

"U have to be reported to .... "

before he could complete the sentence, Aswath called Aruna, " Aruna ...." she turned and he signalled putting his arm on his left shoulder and moved his shirt inside indicating her open saree. She immediately corrected that .....

"Take care ...inga oruthan kannum sari illai ... "so saying he looked at the invigilator when Aruna turned back to see the helpless invigilator looking at her.... she frowned and turned back

Aswath did a sample of his unfriendly smile saying "Po ... illa innum asinga paduva" and giggled closing his mouth with his palm

Half an hour after the exam has started, Aswath was still sitting with the paper un touched.

An invigilator went past him to see him biting his nails n very sarcastic manner with a plain paper in front of him. The invigilator slowly moved near his collegue, asking why is he sitting like that !

"avanukku enna sir, verum paper a koduthuttu appuram attender a gavanichu, illa teacher a ye gavanichu, paper la fill panniduvaan.. ivana yaaru kekkardhu ..... ellam pana thimiru .... indha maadiri pasanga ...cha indha college la ... ellam namma neram"

The bell loudly alarmed the time for giving the sheets when Aswath slowly has filled the first page with a code number and some few lines. he then gave the answer sheet, and moved towards the center to meet Narasimhan.

By the time Sharmi went past him smiling at him, he noticing her, held her by her arms

"Idiot, Behave yourself !"

If your objective is to bring in the visual effects before the eyes of the readers, then you have definitely suceeded. :thumbsup: I could visualise almost all the scenes, as i read through them.

I am a person with poor reading habit, but still i ran through all the sagas in three sittings. That way the story narration is exemplary. :clap:

Some of the incidents narrated give me a feeling of 'Already seen' :lol: . I don't know whether i am suffering from deja vu syndrome :( or the instances narrated are so closer to some real life instances that are common.

Btw what happened to the muthu-maari characters :?:

Thanks Arthi ! Ys, i know that the whole narration would have be hardly 3 minutes on the screen, but to make the reader view those 3 minutes by reading, it takes me 30 minutes :-) but worthy 30 minutes !

Well ya, that saree stuff, i was little skeptic to picturize that initially, but i really felt that it is not necessary for a person, even unknown person to silently signal anybodys unknowing appearance ! but i used that to create a scene there !

By the time Sharmi went past him smiling at him, he noticing her, held her by her arms

her voice echoed thru the centre section of the hall, with the hall just like the ripples created in a pond became muted. With immediate silence created suddenly l, the guys and gals moving nearby stopped abruptly and the attention of many nearby was dragged towards three !

A fulminent hush of wind and chillness touched Aswath's heart ... this is the first time he had felt such a sharp pain deep in his chest ! his hand suddenly with a jerk moved off from Sharmi's arm ... feeling a sudden shock.

Sharmi was really taken back,feeling the nail that scratched off her arm, turned around watching into the eyes afire by anger ... that of Shree's !

There was absolute silence in the hall, with around one fourth of the strength still watching this.

That was Shree's voice that injected a feel of pain into Aswath's spine !

Aditi was whispering to Akash in a corner of the room, with many whispers n rustling grew over the conference hall. Aswath could not show any expression on his face, he felt too shameful being the centre of commotion ! Neither could he show his anger, nor could he drip down tears. The whispers grew and invigilators and started to gather !

Narasimhan, wading thru the crowd, took Aswath by his left arm dragged him ... Aswath's eye were completely fixed on Shree's, who is still heaving with a blaze on her eyes

I was a part of the same conversation with my own cousin...

This happened in my own life.. My cousin (6 months younger to me) was my the best friend ... She had infatuation with a loafer (in her area). Against all my advice and against the wishes of everyone in the family, she married him.. and is now really suffering.. She discontinued her course, though she graduated, she didnt come out with very gud marks.. He is now working as a driver somewhere and she a typist..

Overall her condition is pathetic.. With the 1 yr old kid (girl child), she lives a miserable life...

Now its almost 2 yrs since I talked to her... She has contacts with my aunt .. She even called me once to say "SORRY"..But I cudnt forgive her for ruining her own life...

I feel we all have forgotten the place whre the story is moving and in which community.
Generally in srirangam, a guy cann't hold a girl's hand and that to in front of all. this is the first point.
If he is a relative/close family friend then that is different. even in such case also a friend cann't touch/hold a girl's hand.
Secondly, as a friend what is wrong in advising ur friend the same way shree advised her friend.
It seems that shree knows about Aswath already, even though Aswath character is not elaborated... will be done in coming episodes i believe.
Aswath is not at all a hero, In such case what is wrong is advising sharmi... she is saving her friends life.

About smoking...and this dialog avaala oru nimisham ninachu paathiyaa, idha avaalaala thaangikka mudiyumaa?

Oru aacharamaana iyyengar family-la how can you expect a girl would fall in love with a boy who smokes, here also the place Srirangam is very much important here
In sriramgam the first 2 streets(uttra veedhi & Chitra veedhi) is full of brahmins and they follow mostly all routines that a brahmin need to follow.

@ crazy, if u calculate the gestation period it is 37 - 43 weeks...
Roughly 270 - 300 days.. 300/30 = 10 months.. Though all 10 months dont have 300 days..

Hi Bingle, was away from the net for the last ten days so I read 17,18 (and the ensuing exchanges about 18) today.

17 was very stylish, highly visual (as the rest of the story has been till now). From the clove oil to the slip-ogler, you made him go places. The chapter ended with a nice hook. I have always liked that style and have said so here. So I take the liberty of saying the following:

18 was disappointing. One person talking, raining opinions, arguing in well chosen words are of such prehistoric style that ill-suite a visual storyteller such as you.

The arguments and responses to 18 show that you are eager to discuss moral rights and wrongs (thankfully only discuss not establish them). Fine, but that cannot be at the cost of the storytelling. Establishing what each character thinks and emptying out the persona in her own words serves to (slightly) undo your rich characterizations.

Moreover as a storyteller your only commitment is to the story. Secondary agendas (if you have any such - like moral arguments) must be dealt with brutal coldness.

If we didn't get the seating arrangement subtlety the first time, we'll get it when Aditi and Akash converse. And even if we do miss it, the loss is ours not yours. Why do I mention this: because the eagerness to communicate often dulls the writer's subtlety, which will be a huge loss.
It is perfectly fine to reward the careful readers.

Of course my reading may be completely wrong and I may be overreacting. The long conversation may be more than just a pulpit talk and may actually be central to the story to come. In that case I'd be glad to be wrong.

I think I did not make myself clear. Showing the existing feelings and arguments and painting a picture of the social set-up thought process may be important, but doing it via a monologue was a slight dip in style. Shree's emotional scars could have been hinted without elaborating her arguments, or so I felt.

I'm not sure the analogy applies. It would have applied if JKB tried to go extempore about his opinion on love in general and how it messed with his music.

I seem to have given the impression that I am not interested in any of Shree's experiences and feelings. On the contrary I am eager to know about her ideas and experiences that caused the ideas. That is because I am able to visualize her as a person thanks to your detailed characterization. So the eagerness is itself is the result of your minimal and highly visual narrative style. All I wanted to say was, for the first time in the story there was more "tell" than "show".

All said and done, there is no denying 18 did tell a lot about Shree. I eagerly await the next instalment.

Narasimhan, wading thru the crowd, took Aswath by his left arm dragged him ... Aswath's eye were completely fixed on Shree's, who is still heaving with a blaze on her eyes



Dei machan, marandhu du daa, veenaa edhukku indha vishayathaiye ninaichukittu irukka .... was Simma's voice when he really shrugged when Aswath turned his raging face towards him

he got up from his Avenger which was standing majestic n its side stand..... Aswath's eyes were furious and fixed on Simma...

Simma was unable to move an inch, when he saw Aswath's eyes and said machan, machan...... ok ok ..... seri ... naan onnum sollala ... okvaa ... vaa, innikki unnoda mooda maathanum, padathukku polaam vaa .... where Simma took Aswath's right hand with much difficulty and kept it on the throttle n starting the ignition key on.....

Aswath's Avenger waded thru the Raja Gopuram entering the main road went straight, still knowing that it was a No Entry..... He sped thru the busy main road towards amma mandapam .....

The breaks screeched when they reached amma mandapam, Aswath slided his bike on the side road of the mandapam and parked it right in front of the Bath complex.

padathukku polayaa daa while Simma was querying but without caring for his words, Aswath started walking towards the steps ... Simma was still behind the bike which still on . he switched off the bike, made it slant a lil on the concrete platform and took the keys n turned back to see Aswath missing on the steps......

Simma took his heels off the bike and walked fast towards the steps and saw below and stopped moving further ... he attempted to go further but was stopped by voice oru nimisham He was startled and turned back to see Sharmi.

She slowly shifted her head from left to right back to the left indicating Simma not to walk further .... they both looked at the steps down below to see Aswath sitting in the last step with his feet touching the river Cauvery. He had his Lee folded to have them safe from getting wet.

The railings which were installed to forbid ppl from moving away from the safe bathing zone could see him sitting with his hands picking the small pebbles from the steps and throwing them into the water. One or two even touched the railings and some spalashing water and leaving droplets on it !

Aswath's eyes were firmly fixed on the water which was gushing in front of him, though not fully over the bed, but in the edges ..... with the beautiful Cauvery bridge and the Rock fort in the background giving the evening a soothing touch.

Simma and Sharmi were watchin this from the top and didnt move an inch. Simma turned back to her......

Next target naan dhaane Sharmi broke the silence
Simma kept his head down n looked over his right n looked at Sharmi back again .... enna .. enna target ? with his eyes moving away from Sharmi ....
enna paaru shrilled Sharmi's voice to which Simma responded immediately without shifting his eyes away from her.

adutha target naanga rendu peru dhaane .... idhu dhaane ungaloda romba naal plan, Swetha va piricha, Lakshmi ya piricha ... ippo avo kooda irukkardhu naan mattum dhaane ....

illa ... stammered Simma, illa sharmi .... appadi illa

adhukku .... thaniya pirichu enna saadhikka pora ..... avan dhaan appadi ninachaannna unakku budhi enga pochu.....

so saying they both turned back to watch Aswath again ....

The railing is not witnessing a sound, preferrably to be said a salangai oli ..... near Aswath .... those little legs came down walking from the steps and stopped near Aswath .... Hearing the sound beside him abruptly stopping, he turned around to his right to see a beautiful face shining orangish, in the evening light of the sun in the west !

That was Shree ......................

She looked like an angel in the white half saree with a beautifully combed hair and a small thilakam on her forehead and a smile on her face ........

She came down few steps more to sit next to him !

Boy you are making it more and more intriguing. Every :arrow: sign is followed by a different stream. A recap, a quick look back, the conversation between Narasimhan and Sharmi that reveals precious little and then the completely different last paragraph.

Every chapter has ended with a hook. This one is among the most nervous spots you have left us in. I share the exclamation mark that ends the chapter :-) I suspect the last paragraph is a few steps back in time, but with you there's no guessing. Very good writing.

Ys, i use the arrow marks to indicate two things ... if tis simultaneously happenning or difference in time ! here i ve used it to show simultaneous happennings ! :-)

Many feel that i am goin offtrack or deviating from the central theme... but here if u really observe, certain dishes need better cooking and shld be served better ! i dont believe in re-heating but serving hot with an attraction which will pull u n make u eat ! Hence certain decorations are needed for dishes !
