I think they are threads for present day artists like Ajith, Vijay and full time comedians like Vivek, Vadivelu.I don't think there is a thread for the likes of Baghyaraj, Paandiarajan

I'm not a big fan of bhagyaraj.. agreed his screen play was good but he targeted thaaimaargal aadharavu & controversial themes for his movies to be hits.. .. I liked Rudhra which was not his usual style of movie.. whenever he wanted to show himself as a big hero he flopped.. whenever he did a character that showed the hero as an innocent dork character he got big hits (enga chinna raasa, chinna veedu, aararo aariraro etc).. Problem was he was getting very predictable in his movies..

Bagyaraj is an underappreciated master. Though he belonged to the wordy-school warped in melodrama he had a strong sense of the pace of screenplay.
Here is an extremely smart move in 'Enga Cinna Rasa'. Bagyaraj and his servant go to Radha's town to see her. Bagyaraj is under the impression that he is going to marry Radha (while she is actually betrothed to Bagyaraj's step-brother). The events are developed interestingly and mood is extremely genial.
It suddenly come to fore that the groom in question is actuall Bagyaraj's step-brother. There is an abrupt change in the mood from geniality to disappointment.
Jaiganesh: Maple photo Edhavuthu irundha...ponnu kEkkudhu
Bagyaraj: En photo edhuvum ippa ille, oorukku pOnadhum koduthu vidarEn
Jaiganesh: Periya Maplaikku eppavum thamaash dhaan.... ponnu kEttadhu unga thambi photove
When Jaiganesh start speaking the last line, it is actually off-camera and you see the servant with a half-smile....the smile dies when the sentence finishes.
The abrupt disappointment shown in the servant's face has a greater impact than would have been the case if we had seen the disappointment directly in Bagyaraj's face.

Thiru,
:rotfl: MAN! HOW I LOVED THAT MOVIE! EXCEPT for the climax which does not GEL with my opinion. :)
*****
I rememebr a scene in antha 7 naatkaL.
Ambika would take the first step to come over to bhagyaraj, confess her love and ask kiss. Bg would be hesitant, scared of consequences, tensed all together ABS not in a mood for kiss or romance.
Ambika would go on....and ask for a kiss.
Bg would close his eyes, AND TRY to kiss her with EXTREEEEME tension in his face :rotfl:  Ambika would go all smiles and tell him..."ipdi illai........ konjam sirichittu kiss pannunga" Then he would smile(a smile of ginger eaten monkey ) close his eyes, NOW GREATER tension in his face would come closer to her to kiss her.
She would laugh immy and say "haiyo ithukku munnadi iruntha moojiyE thevalai"
:rotfl:
The subs scene how she climbs down with the help of her half saree, a bold girl that she is, contrast of HOW PERTURBED AND JITTERY bg would be is HILARIOUS to watch :)
Out and out initial first half is full of ADAM TEASING with ambika's vibrant and daring steps and BG's cautious hesitant steps :)

I saw all these films first week (adhukku mEla Odalai).
Gnanappazham was bad. But remember he did not direct it. I don't even think he wrote it.
vEttiya Madicchu kattu had a very good concept but the presentation was not as interesting as his 80s films. But it had its good parts. I remember the murder in the subway. You get to see Bagyaraj's face twisted in fear. Next shot:
Doctor pulls a thermometer out of as monkey-cap wearing Bagyaraj's mouth.
I think if you watch it one TV you may not find it that bad.

Back to acting
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, February 28, 2006]
Director K Bhagyaraj has completed his directorial venture Parijatham.
In between, he has ventured to act in the lead role in a movie titled Kasu Irukkanum, a movie being directed by Priyavan and Indran.
The director duo had approached Bhagyaraj with the script last year. Though Bhagyaraj was busy directing Parijatham, he did not want to miss out the opportunity since he suited the role very much.
According to him, the title of the movie tells the whole story. It would be a hilarious entertainer and is sure to keep the audience in good spirits. The directors are talented and look very promising.

I think Bhagyaraj was the first director to start the trend of announcing Story, Screenplay,... halfway into the movie. His biggest asset is that he can turn even the most ordinary events in our mundane lives into interesting scripts. And his humor is never out of place, never thrust on the viewers. In 'Chinna Veedu', his wife, out of frustration that he is not happy with her, asks him to get a mistress. One night, back from work he tells his wife that he has indeed found one and not surprisingly she is unhappy. Bhagyaraj, in deep sleep is shown muttering: 'En pondatikku naan drogam senjutten..' etc. His wife walks up to him, looks at him with compassion, pats him and goes back to sleep. And just when we are annoyed that the script takes the beaten path, Bhagyaraj wakes up, looks at his wife sleeping and smiles to himself.

Now similiarly it occurs for 2 more times. Then during the 4th time, before the hot scene, the youngest of his sister(10 yr) says to KB like..
"Anna Innoru 50 paise coin edhuthu vachiko"
While other sisters laughs for this, you should see the reaction of KB.

[tscii:36eb8bd1ed]Bhagyaraj plays it safe
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, March 04, 2006]
Actor-director Bhagyaraj has completed his Parijatham, which marks the entry of his daughter Saranya to the big screen.
With a huge star cast that includes him, his daughter, Prithviraj and Prakash Raj, Parijatham was initially slated for a release this February.
However Bhagyaraj, who knows the tricks of the industry well, has reportedly decided to postpone the release of his film.
With a busy cricket season on one-side and fast approaching elections on the other side, Bhagyaraj has reportedly decided to delay the release of Parijatham.
'I am hopeful that this movie would set a new trend in Kollywood,’ he says.

Bhagyaraj is Jeyam Ravi's dad now
IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 06, 2006]
Actor-director K Bhagyaraj, who is back to acting after directing Parijatham, is flooded with offers to act now.
Having completed Parijatham, he seems to be accepting the offers coming his way.
Besides a couple of films he is currently acting, Bhagyaraj has now accepted to play Jeyam Ravi's father in Something Something, a movie being directed by Raja.
Something Something is a remake of Telugu blockbuster Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana directed by choreographer turned director Prabhu Deva.
Trisha plays the heroine in the movie.

But Prakash plays a rich, classy NRI, in Something Something...and he was the father of the 21st century and was suave...BR wouldn't bring much class to the role, due to his age and his time...but whatever, it should be good regardless...

[tscii:be51f78a44]Bhagyaraj in DMK. To campaign against Jaya?
April 05, 2006
At no other time is the film politics nexus in Tamilnadu more prominent than during the run up to elections. Every poll season, throws up its own band of film celebrities who participate in the political process either as star campaigners or contestants. Depending upon the pulling power, the stars are assigned responsibilities and political posts.
This time is no different and we have been witness to the unfolding drama for the past couple of months. First was the launch of Vijayakanth’s party and then the plunge by Karthik, Murali and Senthil. Not to be left behind, the ladies were led by Kushboo who was widely rumored to be pitted against Stalin in Thousand lights constituency withdrew after her infamous comments.
Now it is the turn of Simran, Vindhya and a couple of other minor starlets to display their political leanings. How effective their presence would be at the poll is still a mystery.
Now comes the news that K. Bhagyaraj has joined DMK. He met party President, K. Karunanidhi at Anna Arivalayam today and expressed his solidarity. It is interesting to note that Bhagyaraj had been declared the heir apparent in ADMK by none other than MGR himself. He fell out of favor with JJ and then floated his own party. Mired in debt and other problems, he bid goodbye to politics. Now making a comeback in films, he must have thought that this was the right time to be seen in the public eye. It is rumored that he would campaign against JJ in Andipatti.

The climax is acceptable only because the Doctor(rajesh) character is a exceptionaly good guy..The marriage done without the gir's approval ,that too married to a person already widower. In this movie we are satisfied with ambika since atleast she got a nice guy as husband ..But just because a knot if a girl happened to live with another person and always longing for her ex-lover ..will not bring peace for anybody..
Bhagyaraj stands out in potraying the doctor character ,not the concept of the climax ,which is just a pathetic Thaali sentiment.

Joe, The climax was good only :o why you didnt like the climax :?
Great,
In this movie, the climax is reasonable, but the justification given by bhagyaraj is not acceptable for me..Assume ambika married to a guy with below average mentality ..couldn't tolerate his wife attempt suicide on first night ..there will not be happiness throughout their life as well as the lover's life..is it acceptable ..The lovers did nothing wrong..I prefer the girl still go with her lover, despite of forceful thaali instead of longing for her lover even after marriage..she should have accepted her life once married..otherwise go with lover...But here I assume Ambika finally didn't want to take out thaali ,since she didn't want to betray a nice guy rajesh, not just because of thaali.
So In this story the climax is acceptable since Ambika got a nice guy as husband and the lover also can console himself knowing that her lover's life will be peaceful with such a lovely husband.

joe.
good post.
I feel EVEN IF THE DOC CHAR IS GOOD,
the girl cant stay back just because she is bound by a thread or thaali.
thread or thaali is to bind PPL IN LOVE.
Its weird to think, first tie thread, or put ring or whtever and LOVE WOULD HAPPEN LATER......
WHAT THE...... (anyway exceptions are there... )
In this specific case, She stayed back BECAUSE OF SENTIMENT...... not because of LOVE FOR THE DOC.
climax is dumb, stupid, unacceptable.
Thirumaran
13th April 2006, 12:40 AM
I dont see anything wrong in the climax.
First of all, we should not think from the personal point of view.
Given the same kind of situation, i wonder how many Tamizh Ladies will
run away with the lover. That too that movie came 15 years before.
Even now at the most 10 percent may take a different decision.
Hardly few people will do that as per my opinion.
The view of director is quite clear. The dialogue says it all.
"Ennoada lover unga wife aagalaam,
but unga wife ennoada kaathali aaga mudiyaathu"
Love, maximum times is a private relation, which is unknown to general public. In the movie also the same.
Only few people came to know abt their love.
Marriage, is a relation which is approved and blessed in the presence of general public.
That too Hindus believe that the marriage happens with the blessings of numerous Devas.
For many Tamilians, Marriage is the more powerful relation than love before marriage.
That too a girl taking away the Mangal Sutra for going with lover could have been a stupid climax.
.
We need to consider one more point also.
They were not yet divorced.
Their bond was still on....
The Climax was 100 % perfect if we consider various external factors. That is why the movie was a huge hit.
If the climax could have been different, it could have bombed in the box office.

I will remember him for his script writing abilities. Till date in my life, I have never seen a movie like 'Mundhanai Mudichu' for its value of entertainment. Not even a single boring scene... Whether it is sentiment, comedy, screenplay, characters or even for music, I still think it is an excellent example for a successful commercial movie.
For me, KSR is next Bhagyaraj, who also knows the pulses of the audiences. :notworthy:

Anybody remembers the scene where he credits him for Direction in "Darling Darling Darling" :rotfl: :rotfl:
In Andha 7 natkal, it is after the climax, while he moves out of Rajesh's home, "e climax korachu old sare.. but gold"
In oru kail osai, credits shown when the train passes him in the nearby track, as he was attempting a suicide by placing his head over the track
In Vidiyum varai kathiru, Metuppalayam - ooty train scene
In indru poi nalai vaa, :rotfl: :rotfl: thangachi scene at the start of the film. Actually in this, there won't order followed in the titles. . suddenly, Baghyaraj's name is shown & then other assistants names would follow etc.

Me too.
In chinna veedu,
The movie starts with a scene where a husband reluctantly gives ride to his sister-inlaw (wife's younger sister) to go to school. While driving, he purposefully applies brake suddenly. his sister-inlaw hits him from back. her sister inlaw asks him what happened mama, he says "meadu"ma...again he applies brake suddenly and she hits him from back. she asks what happened now "mama". He says" pallam" ma.....then the title card shows "story, screen play and direction by K bagyaraj"
I felt really difficult to decribe this scene in english.
I think the movie dialogues were written by parthiban. Dialoguela comedy and KAMA NEDIyum thukkalaa thaan irrukkum.

In a particular scene, Bagyaraj will meet sulochana in a "othaiyadi padha" and she will walk away saying something ....while she was running away we see sendhamarai and oor perusunga stand there ..
very well made scene..he will ask her to go home and stop the local men from attacking bagyaraj ..and warn bagyaraj.
simple scene..but very well made.
Thooral ninnu pochu climax is one of the "non-cinematic" climax in Tamil cinema...Awesome movie

Grouch, as i have mentioned several times, ninga enakku just aNNan so your zeroing down was fairly accurate except that "boxer" radha was always intimidating than initimate while Ranjani was but a speck in kollywood. That leaves one.

OK, some chronology.
Backiaraj tasted phenomenal success with "mouna geethangaL" in 1981. His prior movies (after ending his asst-dir job with BR) were moderately successful - suvar illAtha siththirangaL / oru kai Osai but none had the scale of MG.
Initial part of Mouna geethangaL was featured in Kumudam as a new-attempt-thodar-kadhai (with movie stills themselves instead of pics) and was immensely popular -ended as "meethi veLLiththiraiyil" - and definitely had a hand in the movie's success. (It became a trend later on, Kamal's Vikram was featured similarly in Kumudam as well, written by Sujatha).
Gangai Amaran was the MD and the songs were huge hits too(Janaki singing 'dAddie dAddie' in little-boy voice was a regular in radios and so were 'mookkuththippoo mElE' and 'mAsamO mArgazhi mAsam').
His next two movies had IR as MD but didn't do as phenomenally as mouna geethangaL (indRu pOi nALai vA & vidiyum varai kAththiru, both in the same 1981 I think).
By this time, there was no BR-BkR working together. BR had a few sumArs / flops (NMP / KE / N) after BkR left him, till the sleazy alaigaL Oyvathillai changed his fortunes.
There were many, including mags, who started attributing "more-than-necessary-percentage-credit" to BkR for prior movies of BR also, like 16V / KPR / SR / PV.
It was pretty obvious that the emotional BR was unhappy about it (though BkR kept referring to him as "gurunAthar") and there were even rumors that the two weren't in good terms, jealousy of the older man etc during the period 1980-83.
andha 7 nAtkaL too came out in the same 1981 with huge success (MSV music, songs were hits) and BkR's glory totally outshone BR at this point of time.
BR's Tick Tick Tick came in the same 1981 (my first year in college, in the new "Sona" theatre in Trichy) and wasn't a success, despite the huge talk about the Kamal movie thanks to Madhavi's bikini stills. OTOH, Backiyaraj was riding among successes.
Next year -1982 - he had dArling^3 (real-life-love developed with PoornimA J and married her after his 1st wife died) and this movie was a success too, with Shankar-Ganesh as MD. (Oh nenjE nee thAn). Same year brought a much bigger hit in TNP - the first mega hit of BkR with IR as MD and songs immensely popular.
BkR's peak was in 1983 with the biggest career hit - murungakkAi mudichchu (IR / AVM / Oorvashi). He appeared invincible at that point of time, as a director / hero / writer.
He has never tasted such scale of a success ever after as a hero / director / writer.
His re-association with BR was in dhAvaNikkanavugaL (1984) where BR acted in a scene as "director". It was a BkR movie where BR had only the guest appearance and apparently any "problems" between them have evaporated. Meanwhile, BR had success with his maN vAsanai, after a terrible flop vAlibamE vA vA.
oru kaidhiyin diary happened in 1985 where BkR once again wrote for BR and was a hit. (I think BkR remade it in Hindi with Amitabh as Akhri rAsthA and not BR).
So, DK was before OKD but it was a BkR movie with BR as guest actor.
OKD was the real re-association, BR the director and BkR the writer.

Based on current BO comparisons, some may wonder how reliable are the above statistics (relative hit levels of movies).
These weren't based on Rupees/PaisE accounts :-)
Typically, most movies got released in similar# of theaters those days (even big towns like Trichy had a single theater release / Chennai corp limits had 4/5 only). There weren't huge variations in # of seats (Madurai Thangam / Trichy Kalaiarangam and other 70mm kinds were exceptions and not the norm).
So, BO comparisons were based on 50 days / 100 days / silver jubilee etc - in how many cities - and such only :-) and from dinathanthi kind of ads in memory.

Also, the impact of movie personalities in TN (again "those days") should not always be measured in terms of roovA-naiyA paisA / BO etc. (It's even more applicable in the case of music when one talks about "hit" rate).
It should be measured in the amount of "sensation" it created among the general public. How much time it occupied in their conversations / what new "trends" it started in the community (big speakers in village tea stalls / insistence of public going in buses with cassettes / mushrooming of recording centers / MD getting pics on wall posters etc, for e.g.)
That way, at least for a year or so (peak during the mundhAnai mudichchu days) - Backiaraj had possibly the #1 rating in TN among all cine-personalities, including star actors (even MGR declared that he was his vArisu).
