Swathy,
Where are your comments about the song :)
The movie was 1993 pongal release i think. It had many other songs like 'Manthiram' by KJY and the evergreen 'Aalolam paadi' a sweet lullaby sung by Raja himself. Though the movie did not do well in the BO the songs were all super hits from this film.

Swathy,
Great song indeed to discuss. I have a Nokia 8310, which has a limited memory. But, I have this song recorded and I play it whenever i feel I need Raja's music to motivate me.This is the only song I have in my phone.
The beauty of this song is they way SPB's voice will flow into this song beautifully.
I remember this film getting released somewhere in August 1992 and topping the charts, though as rajasaranam said didn't quite click at the box office.
It probably didn't have the commercial elements apart form the songs to go on to be a Hit.
The film also has Adukku Malli song, which is even today absolutely FRESH to hear.

thanks renault for pouring in more information :)
Was it a Aug 1992 release? This was bharathan's 2nd movie in Tamil i suppose. Devar magan was his first. Devar magan released in 1992 deepavali! From my not well kept memory I can only think of the year 1992 as in these orders... august me joining college.... 1992 august Roja getting released.... Deepavali devarmagan and pandian... 1993-Pongal-Aavarampoo, magarasan, puthiyamugam etc., may be Iam wrong :?
The movie was a remake of Barathan's own Superhit 'Thakara' from malayalam. though the movie was ok many related it with 16 vayathinilae storyline. Hence it bombed at BO.
I dont remember the exact situation for this song. But I think one of them 'Hero' or 'Heroin' rolls down from a moutain and falls into a deep valley with water.The other hear only the 'thud' sound...but in reality only a stone would've fallen. While the other starts crying this song comes out as breath of fresh air. The song in the beginning gives a sense of loss and builds up into a wonderful duet.

Poonthalir aada..... Panneer pushpangal by ‘lover boy' & Janaki!
This composition is an aesthetic melody and artistic orchestral glamour pressed into ONE!!!
What a gratification!!
Raaja enriched this song with counterpoint melody throughout the song...... especially the divine second interlude has a counterpoint with two guitars later chorus humming joining too....
Thanks Raaja for delighted us!!

Not sure whether the lyrics are really by the Maestro himself.. I will check that in Maestro Yahoo groups and get back here.. Lyrics are amazing.
Baroque, can you elaborate on the Counterpoint melody aspect in this song? That is an interesting observation.
Maestro is a REAL MASTER in Counterpoint songs.. eg: En Kanmani.. Un Kaadhali song from Chittukuruvi.
Once we are done with this song.. we can move on to Devanin Kovil and Kalyana thenila.

In fact I remember in an interview with Gangai Amaran shown on TV, I saw a Panner Pushpangal 75 days trophy. Those days movies running for 75 days is no big deal.. byt if they can celebrate 75 days for Panneer Pushpangal, that movie can said to be closer to everyone's heart including Ilayaraja and Gangai Amaren.
For someone who may not be knowing, this was the first movie of both P Vasu and Santhana Bharathi as they made directorial debuts jointly..

Counterpoint melody:
The technique of combining two or more melodic lines in such a way that they bring a harmonic relationship while they are distinct , retaining their individuality!
That is melodies in conjunction with another!
Basically different, distinctly contrasting melody lines but run as parallel elements!

In the prelude ‘the chorus and the guitar’ counterpoint followed by Balu divinely starts ‘poonthalir aada....’ and the second interlude is phenomenal , very memorable two guitars playing different melodies, then first guitar stops ,the chorus humming starts while the second guitar continues at the back and chorus ends while violin , flute and the guitar all play together!!
In the first interlude also chorus-guitar counterpoint!! The entire song is MIND- BLOWING!!

Some of my thoughts on this wonderful song:
1. Excellent picturisation. Raja loves his songs to be picturised well and has also commended BarathiRaja and Vamsi (Telugu) as couple of directors who picturise his songs well.
2. Kamal Hassan... IMHO, Rajinikanth has been a greatest beneficiary of amazing songs gifted by the Maestro than for Kamal. Songs like today's pick are a certain exception.
3. Interspersed in one of the interludes will be a male voice, gelling well with the music. Can someone throw light on the singer. I guess it is VS Narasimhan, who also should have sung a similar bit in Raja Paarvai (Andhi Mazhai).
Overall, yet another film that goes as great songs by Maestro for a flop movie.. sadly, this time for a Kamal starrer.

Swathy, I guess the source for today's pick was the movie itself that was telecasted in one of the channels yesterday.
Co-incidentally I was watching Aavaram Poo in one of the channels around the same time. No points for guessing what song I was waiting to watch in that movie... Of course, our first song in this thread.
Coming back to today's pick, nativity is one strong factor for this song and in fact all songs in this movie. I thought Janaki's voice suited Sukanya well, begining with this song and following up with few other songs in Chinna Goundar, Chinna Maapillai, Walter Vetrivel, etc. May be this song was a trend-setter for a female lead's voice gelling well with a particular actress.

Swathy, I guess the source for today's pick was the movie itself that was telecasted in one of the channels yesterday.
Exactly. do u know how much i long to watch a movie like this that reflects our nativity. The movie starts by raja's voice itself. salangai satham kekkudhamma. all the songs in the movie are good.

Swathy, yet another song that matches my taste with yours and certainly it will with others in this thread as well.
It is a good question to ask on the intrument. I just think it could be a winged instrument like a strange trumpet.
I remember watching this movie just for the songs.. pretty ordinary movie from a genious like Balu Mahendra.
Shall come back more on this song.

Not much activity on this thread for a few days...
I liked the songs, most of which I hadn't particularly noticed before.
I was listening to one such song for the first time today, and I thought, why not add it to this thread?
Song: Andhi varum neram
Singers: SPB, S Janaki
Film: Mundhanai Mudichi (1983)
Its got all the usual IR mix, great melody, great violin orchestration, trademark IR chorus intro...
hope you like this song

very good melody by IR. This movie also has got other good songs like velakku vacha nerathila thanananana , chinnajchiru kiliye , naan pudikkum mappillai than .
title song by IR is a very good start for the movie. I really miss now. :cry:

the song is in mayamalavagowla, one of IR's favorite raagas.
this scale has flat dha and sharp ni
In the middle of the charanam ("neeraduthu..." part) he uses both sharp dha and flat ni, going to some derivative of chakravaakam I think, another of his favorite raagas. Then he goes back to mayamalavagowla, its beautiful.
The song keeps sounding better and better the more I hear it!
btw raaga has a better quality recording of the song:

Hi ananth, Iam wondering at the sheer coincidence. Just now I posted in IR's album thread about IR's MMG in the song "enga ooru laila" from Karagaatakkari and here you are talking about the same MMG raga!!!
I think its no coincidence - it just goes to show IR's mastery over this beautiful raaga!
I don't think any composer (except possibly Tyagaraja himself) has produced more beauties in this raaga. This culminates in IR's arrangement of "thulasidala" in HTNI - an incredible composition in MMG by Tyagaraja arranged for violin quartet by IR - it is impossible without an intimate knowledge of the raaga.
some of his other masterpieces in this raaga are the great "poongathavae" in nizhalgal, "kaadhal kavidhaigal padithidum neram", "senthaazham poovil vanthaadum thendral" etc.

Song: Oliyile therivadhu devadaiya
Singers: Karthik , Pavatharini
Movie: Azhagi
Director: Thangar bachan
Year of release: 2001
My Comments: Azhagi is a beautiful poem written by Thangar bachan with the major support by IR. Background score is amazing. Regarding this particular song, it starts in a very good situation where the audience doesn't expect a song. Excellent melody beat.

I guess we might have lots of dicsussions on this due to its recent-ness.
The movie Azhagi can be considered as one among the best movies ever made in Tamil cinema and also a trend-setter for off-beat movies doing well commercially. Thanks to this, we now have Bala, Ameer, Selva Raghavan and Ameer giving us good quality off-beat movies .. interestingly all these directors having great support from music directors (Maestro and Yuvan).
This song gave singer Karthik the break in his career and he is thankful to Maestro even today for this song. The beauty of this song is the gelling of the singers voices (inckluding Bhavatharini's) with the subtly background instrumental music interludes.
IR seems to have hugged Thangar after seeing the movie in the preview show and this should one among Maestro's personal favorites.
This song incidentally was written by Ilayaraja as he did for all songs in this movie.
Shall we say this as a Ilayaraja Movie !!!
Cheers

Nice pick swathy,
This was one of the best album in recent years from IR. though 'kombula Poova suthi' was overshadowed by the success of 'Unnai Vida'. This song is a complete entertainer with its folk flavour and some mix of western music. The trumpets and snare drums? which have come into India with the british and got rooted into our culture has been used well in this song. the chorus and blaring trumpets really takes us to the festive plane and soars up our spirits. No wonder Raja was dancing in the studio while recording this song. :)
another song which went unnoticed was 'Karumaathur kaatukulle' since it got cut in the movie. :cry: This song has nine different rhythm patterns unfolding one after the other as the storyteller proceeds telling the story with all those emotions.And all those nine patterns are a gem from Raja upholding our tamil folk culture.
And nevertheless the hard rock 'Andha kaandamani'/'Karpagraham vittu' with those fused voices and IR's voice topping them all. A very good feast from the One and Only Raja :)

I have an interesting tale to share here with regards to this song..
One of my colleagues in work place is a strange guy. He stopped watching tamil movies in 1995 as he became an avid english movie watcher. For that matter, he doesn't even know the so-called "Vijay" and "Ajith" in the industry.
He happened to listen to this song one-day when he accidentally tuned to a local fm channel in his car audio. He got so fascinated by this song that he was singing this all the time for at least two-weeks..
"Awesome song daa" was his comment all the time we discuss this song..
He pressurised me to give him all possible sources for this song.. I gave him my cd and also a link in Coolgoose.com for him to listen in office.. Such is Raja's reach.
Adding to Rajasaranam's and Swathy's comments on this song.. Kamal said that he saw 16 vayathiniley Raja while composing this song :)
Sadly, only half of this song will be picturised considering the importance given to the dual-narrative screenplay the movie had.
Virumandi incidentally had a great BGM as a title score.. which was not released at all.. I still remembe that, despite I have heard that only once in Satyam theatre way back in Jan 2004.

rajasaranam
28th March 2006, 07:43 PM
Swathy,
you seem to be younger in age compared to some hubbers here :) Hence your picks are from Raja's 90's songs i think. I would rather pick songs from 80's and early 90's. Now coming to the song.
The movie Sethu is the only movie which ran for more than a year in preview theatres itself. None of the distributors were ready to buy the movie. After much hardships the film was released and it received some lukewarm response. But suddenly after 2-3 weeks when the magazines and channels started praising the movie as one of its kind... The movie became a smashing hit.
I didnt know any of the songs till i went to the movie after 3 weeks of its release. The movie was just an ordinary movie until it reaches its purpose at Pandimadam. all songs until then like kanakarunkuyilae, Maalai en vedhanai, sikkatha chitondru, were ordinary nos. and this one song 'Engae sellum intha paadhai' with the mesmerising voice of Raja coupled with the moving images on the screen takes the movie to greater heights and rest is history. Already left with a heavy heart the master craftsmen Bala and Raja gives us more pain with 'Vaarthai thavari vittai' ....We leave the cinema halls not able to withstand the dismay and grief of the Hero as though it had happened to us. Later on We know this is after all cinema but still the pain of the movie lingers on making it an unforgettable one in the annals of tamil cinema.
If not for these two songs I seriously doubt whether the movie would have served its purpose and become a hit. No wonder Bala Introduced 'Pithamagan' in the titles as 'With the Grand Music of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja'. He is definitely Indebted to Raja as we are :)
Renault
28th March 2006, 08:06 PM
Rajasaranam, Bala infact included "'With the Grand Music of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja'" in Sethu as well. But that was because Maestro was the only selling element in the movie that time.
Like a Rajini / Kamal movie.. it can be rightly called an Ilayaraja movie..
I liked your comments on this song and more on Vaarthai thavari vittai.. I saw this movie in Albert.. and I left with a heavy heart.
I guess Raja should have inserted these two songs on his own and to add more impact he sang those himself.
rajasaranam
28th March 2006, 09:44 PM
Renault,
thanks. But isnt that what Raja's music all about :?: Moves along with the movie - sometimes subtle sometimes overpowering but always Elevating or Enhancing the scenes. His songs are extension of this and merges with the scene perfectly and create the required mood,feelings or effect for the viewer/Listener. May be its melancholy, Happiness, love, or whatever the feeling need to be generated his music does that. He is the only MD who can express the innermost feelings through music. He has never bothered to create a hit music but always bothered about the emotions that need to be filled up in the songs which will gel with the movie.
coming back to the Song 'Engae sellum' It starts off suddenly with almost no prelude and comes in the maestro's voice. that itself creats the first impact that needs to be generated. the voice filled with grief and sadness follow the visitors going to the pandimadam...just one line till the end of 'Yaaro yaaro arivaar' rendered once there comes the choral cry 'ohoohoooooho' and violins to gel with the feeling of the viewers...Us. It is as though Raja is standing right there near the screen and singing and explaining the sadness experienced by the characters playing in the screen and transfering it to us and asking us to join in.
The music transcends to another plane with some percussions playing softly and a flute following the grief after each line is rendered by maestro. The first interlude has some amazing layers of violins playing two different tunes and a small bit near the end with veena. He keeps the first 'Charanam' with the same rhythm added with bell sounds and a veena joining in only once and ending with the flute. He heightens the sadness thro his voice in this charanam. it is more crying than the beginning.
Unlike the lenghty first interlude he keeps the second interlude short with violins and flute and extending it with the Choral cry. The shortening of this interlude is perhaps he wanted to keep us tightly packed with already created emotions and wanted no musical wizardry to jeopardize it. The second charanam is almost a replica of the first one with lyrics changed and the emotions heightened with words like 'Man ketta antha mazhai pozhiyum?
Megam pozhiyamal povathundaa...
Karai Ketta antha alaigal varum?
Alaigal thazhuvaamal povanthundaa...
Kaneer mazhai unthan munnae munnae...
Kaathal mazhayai pozhi kannae kannae...
En uyirae oooh en uyirae'
Now listen to the first charanam again and we can find the difference. Its being sung by Raja himself to us telling the tale of sethu.
'Oorai vittu oo.. oar kudisai
Angae yaar sendru poattuvaithaar
Kaathalilae oar paithiyamae
Sorgam athuvendrae katti vaithaan
Kaanum kanavugalil inbam inbam
Unmai atharkku vegu thooram thooram
Kaathal endraal ooo vedhanayaa...'
the second Charanam is sung by Sethu to abi and finally asking her to join her as a 'Vazhithunai' .
the transition from Raja singing and sethu singing happens thro us via the choral cry. We find ourselves amidst the happenings and Raja makes us take part in the drama.We are no more the viewers/listeners We are one among the people included in the manifestation of human drama and emotions happening in the screen.
With simple lyrics and minimal musical instruments he can unfold our innermost emotions. That is the genius of Raja. :)

This movie was remade in Telugu and Kannada. It didn't do as well in Telugu as it did in Kannada. One main reason my kannada friend told me was that The kannada producers insisted on having this song in their version as well. Only difference being KJY's voice instead of Raja's. You hear them both, you would feel that KJY's version is allright , but that heart pounding impact is only there in Raja's voice.

In one of my earlier work place a friend of mine used to work beside me. He is a hard-core English songs freak and doesn't even think about tamil songs never mind listening them.
There came Valentine Day and our man (obviously in Love with someone) celebrated the day with this song in his win-amp played in infinite loop. Trust me.. none of us in office got irritated with repeated listenings (me, not of curse, anyways).

Poovey Sempoovey.....!! What a High Class composition from Raaja!
I love this song forever! Raaja’s haunting flute with guitar stringing sets the mood.... then starts the pallavi- KJJ’s lovely, enchanting voice effectively communicates the mood!! Tabla, good amount of veena, violin, great guitaring throughout the song, soothing flute, both the charanams followed by pallavi before the dramatic interludes !! Don’t forget to enjoy the guitaring at the back through out the song and postlude haunting flute with the same!!
I thoroughly adore the lyrics.....
naan seydha paavam ennoadu poagum

What a beautiful, consoling (uplifting) tale of romance!!

though SPB has sung well The jeevan or soul of the song resides in IR version. The base or nasal voice of Raja adds great feelings to the song especailly when he sings 'Kaamam theadu ulagilae....till... engae pirivathu' is out of the world soulful rendition from Raja. He has sure put his soul into this song. Thanks for this pick Swathy. :) Iam listening to it after quiet a few days.

Another song that can be best remembered for Maestro's voice than for anything else. Not to forget Janaki's innovative singing as well, which coupled tobgether makes this a great experience listening.
Maestro had a very smooth voice when songs like today's pick was sung. Others include the classic Metti Oli from the film Metti.
This song has a grand musical opening and if you want to hear variety of instruments before the pallavi.. come listen to this song..
Overall a rich treat to Raja fans.. this song has some great interludes and an amazing tune that makes listening amazing and pleasing. Songs like this on hearing will make your day.. if you hear first thing in the morning.
Not sure about the song picturisation, but Bharatiraja should have done justice to this song. Another rustic rural song that is very good from the same movie sung by Raja is "Thoppil Oru Naadagam".. where Maestro would have sung for BharatiRaja himself.
Swathy, yet another pick that very much synchs with my taste of Raja's melodies. Keep the good selections going.

then let me add an interesting anecdote. many years ago this was film was telecasted in doordarshan. those were the good old days when dd was the only channel that aired tamil movies and that too only on sundays. Te director of the station at that time was probably a north indian. In his frantic bid to contain the film well within the time slot allocated to it he removed this song . many people were clearly dissapointed . my papa too.
the same song was telecasted late in the night on the same day. This song doesn't appeal to me due to its carnatic flavour. nevertheless a good song.

6th April 2006, 08:05 AM
Adding more to Rocketboy's anecdote... some months back this movie was telecasted in a tamil satellite channel in the afternoon time slot(not the so called TRP monopoly.. suntv).. But this movie was well received that it was telecasted in the night once again.
I was in Mumbai that time and I had to go out in the afternoon.. but I stayed back until the Vaan Poley Vannam Kondu song.. my fav pick in the movie.
But today's song interestingly was my childhood fav. I remember my parents telling me that I used to imitate one of Kamal's dance steps frequently.
Sadly, few people can explain the technical nuances in this son. Swathy, your music notes for this song is amazing.. but could not comprehend it sadly.
Am not blessed to analyze Raja's songs technically.. but am blessed to live in an era where he lives as well. That sums it up all.

This is probably one of the first songs Maestro has used the COUNTERPOINT theme throughout.
eg: En Kanmani is POINT.. Un Kaadhali is a COUNTERPOINT. Ilayaraja is a master in Counterpoints.
Evn in this thread Baroque had beautifully explained the counterpoint concept, this time etween the musical instruments in the Poonthalir Aaada song.
Wish Baroque participates here to shd more light on this song

Kinnathil Then is an amazing song. Not sure whether this song got its due credit due to the competition it should have faced from Orey Naal Unnai Naan Nilaavil..
This is a well-casted movie in all the sense:
1. Star Cast: Kamal, Rajini, Sri Priya and Jayachitra.. all capable actors
2. Direction: Sridhar
3. MD: Of course Maestro.
But the interesting aspect of this song is a rare duet (Kamal and JayaChitra). Haven't seen Jayachitra duets much.. that too with Maestro's music.
Interestingly Jayachitra went to Raja to score music for her own film that was released in 1991 with Rahman as the hero.
Not much tech inputs I can share here.. may be Rajasaranam, Baroque and Usha akka can share their thoughts on this song.

Today's pick can be considered as an all time classic of all Ilayaraja fans. Ask any Raja fan, this song will be in his Raja top ten.
Swathy, spot on comment.. the starting is too good .. for variety it starts with a Mirudangam...and gradually fuses into a more western mode.
Thanks for the name Gopalakrishnan. Did he sing again in Endhan nenjil (Kalaignan)?
I find a semblance in one of the interludes to the interludes in the song Kaadhal Kavithaigal (Gopura Vaasalile).. May be some experts can comment whether both the songs are from the same raaga.
IMHO, Raja has given fantastic songs for Rajini than for Kamal. But this song is a definite exception.

I actually liked the Malayalam version first ('Vezhambal Kezhum' from the same movie is a wonderful song and happens to be my favourite :P), its actually a lot more instrumental. Sangathil has importance to lyrics.
I love this small piece where Ilayaraja says 'Sindhithen payginra amudhai' and Janaki repeats 'Sindhi then payginra amudhai'..that part is too good.

Great song. But very very badly picturised.
One of the songs that if you listen to in the morning, your entire day is made. In my experience select Raja songs on listening once in the morning has kept my mind fresh throughout the day. eg: Today's pick, Manjal Thottu (Friends), Valaiosai (Satya), Enna thaan sugamo (Maapillai).
I have observed that this song has been cleverly lifted by Vidyasagar for Kaadhal Vandhadhum (Poovellam Un Vaasam).This song became a hit song. Reasons, modernised the original Raja tune (of course plagiarised) and picturised well.
An evidence that some of Raja's greatest works have been spolied by the directors, and most of this misfortune becomes some other guy's (Vidyasagar in this case) fortune.

Song : Ennadi Meenakshi
Singers: S.P Balasubramaniam
Year: 1978

Composer : Illayaraja
Sorry for posting but i thought that i might want to share a insight view on this song.
1) This is a very underrated song as i dunnot see much people talking about this song( possibly because of its fast paced beats?)
2) If i am not wrong this is the first song where jazz has been implemented to accomodate indian raagams
About this song, i believe illayarajas orchestration and instrumentation particularly in the interludes is just brings out the best of jazz i have ever heard. The all-guns-blazing style of trumpets used in usual jazz songs by miles davis also comes out in the first interlude which makes it very nice to hear. In the case of only our indian koothu instruments plus western drums can make a song fast paced was disproved by full usage of jazz in this song.
SPB waves in and out of this song like he was born to sing it. His singing together with Illayaraja's orchestration just makes it out of this world. I seriously feel you hubbers should pay attention to illayaraja's fast paced numbers;his orchestration is more evident there than his melodies.

Nice one swathy...Kannan oru Kai Kuzhandai was a soft carnatic melody by Illayaraja. This was also the first song Vaali wrote lyrics for Illayaraja. My mom used to make me sleep with this song. There is also another song titled "Oduginraal" rendered by seerkazhi govindarajan which was also quite good and rarely talked about by fans.

Today's pick is a typical 70s Ilayaraja song with a soft melody. Probably the movie being one of Raja's earliest, he has successfully brought out his knowledge in Carnatic music through this song.

Kanan Oru kai Kuzandhai- was a classical number from IR as tvsankar stated it came with good recording quality compared to earlier versions of IR songs.
I remember this song was the first Combo of Valee and IR.
This is a special kind of songs which gives 2 kinds of mood when we hear it. A romantic mood when KJY sings the lines
"EzpiRappum iNainthirukkum

Song: Anandha Thenkatru
Singers: Shailaja SP., Malaysia Vasudevan
Movie: Manipur Mamiyar
Year of release: 1982 (Thanks to Project Gem movie list (http://project-gem.tripod.com/MasterList.htm))
Lyrics: ??
Director: ??
Comments: Its one of my long time favourite songs :P Beatiful lyrics and excellent interludes. Especially the guitar on the first interlude is simply too good. I get an evening/twilight feel, listening to this song. Malaysia seems to have sung the 'vethala potta paatu vadhiyar' voice with ease (imitating CSJ ?). Shailaja's voice sounds strained especially singing the higher pitch. I love this contrasting combo of voices, Malaysia taking a more harder voice (sorry couldnt think of an apt word :roll:) and Shailaja taking the softer handle.
Trivia: This movie never released, and that 1982 I suppose is the audio release. This movie had one other song 'Samayal Padame' that was tailored with a little different lyrics and 90s instruments as 'Enna Samayalo' in KB's 'Unnal Mudiyum Thambi'.
Anecdotes: I have heard this song as early as 1983/84 when I hardly tall enough to reach the tape recorder on the table that played the song. I love listening to this song and have heard it many times in the 80s and early 90s (though wasnt able to appreciate the beauty of the song then). I have always thought that the male lead was some 'paatu vadhiyar' specifically called to sing for this song :lol: . I didnt know until 2003, that it was Malaysia Vasudevan who sang it. I had imaginations that this song would've been picturised similar to 'Maan Kanden Maan Kanden' in Rajarishi or like 'Suga Ragame' from Kanni Rasi. It all went down the drain seeing that this movie never released. Certainly such a beautiful song deserved to have revived just to picturize this song ;). Though it might look wierd or incredibly shocking to picturize this 70s styled song.
I leave to you guys now to express your thoughts on this song :). I would like to thank swathy for giving me an opportunity to feature today's SOTD.

it is a different and very good song. good pick of the day. i already posted this song in "raja songs - good" thread.
as narayanan said this is in the catagory of "suga ragame" from kanni rasi, "madhana moga rupa sundari" from intru poi nalai vaa (bhagyaraj movie.).
these above songs are sung by MVD. actually MVD tried to imitate the old singer (CSJ?) in the humorous manner.
actually during my school days ( AR.Rahman's peak period. ), i used to hear my uncle's cassettes. all his cassettes will have the superb IR songs. in one of the cassette, i heared this peculiar song. First i confused that why he has recorded the song?. but after 2 to 3 times, i feel the song's special.
in this song male voice sings carelessly ( without much bother about raga etc.) and female voice sings in proper manner. that is the rare speciality of the song. the pronunciation of MVD is something different and good.(especially during "podhai uoottum thiratchai madhuvo"). lyrics also writen in the pure tamil manner. u can understand this through narayanan post.
actually i am not having the song in my collection. i missed the cassette also.so i am unable to capture all the contents of that song. i searched the net also. i am unable. if anybody knows any online source please let me know.
Thanks

"anandha thenkaatru" marks the work of a genius in composing an over exploited scale like "Hindholam" and still making it look fresh even after decades. There is a guitar interlude in the 2nd or 3rd charanam's bgm which is again a testimony to why IR is a cut above the mediocre rest. Well now may be he has lost his music marbles due to age or whatever. But no md in the past or future would come even closer to his wizardry during his prime.

Narayanan,
An excellent pick from this unreleased movie. The tune, singing style orchestration all are very good. Especially the veena, guitar, flute and violin ensemble in the first interlude is something no one could ever imagine. And the free flow from WCM to Tamizhisai to Electronica to WCM again... in the second Interlude is mind blowing....Iam a lover of his interludes where he picks us up from the tune he has set and gives us a ride. sometimes along the pastures, sometimes near the sea and sometimes along a river but always to a exotic location :) and then he puts us back into the tune again. In few seconds he shows interesting patterns of music from all over the world which will contain the knack of making us feel being in a different place...when he returns to the tune we will be left with longing for more such rides.
Veenai eduthu symphony vaasippaar guitar eduthu folk vaasippar Entha vithyasamum illama ella isaiyum onnu thaanaennu nigazhthi kaattiduvaar. :) Aanalum tamizh vaasanai ella tamizh paatulayum irukkum. How he does that no body knows :!:
SOTD thaan aanalum I cant end up without writing about 'Rasiganae en arugil vaa' :)
The song was a splendid dance no. which cant be termed simply a disco song. It was more than that. All Raja's Dance nos. Consist an inherent melody in it. this song is nothing less in that aspect with a well set tune and three stanzas/Interludes. the third Interlude is the one I like most where he has set a rock pattern and he sings like a rock star. I can easily imagine Raja with the guitar in his hands rocking away with those long hairs and dope filled eyes like western rock stars :) [ though in person he is not like that]
I think this interlude is slightly reworked and used in Vikram title song...IMO
The lyrics that follow this interlude is interesting
'therinthathai naan kudukiraen
thenmaangu raagangal serthu(2)
idhayangal sila ethirkalam
ethirpavar athai rasikalaam(2)
naan kaanum ullangal

Song Name: Sangeetha Jathi Mullai
Singers : SPB
Movie : Kadhal Oviyam
Actors: Kannan, Radha
Director: Bharatiraja
Year: 1982
This song is a climax song which probably describes the hero's sadness and anger. Probably one of the few albums where all the songs were carnatic melodies(eg sankarabaranam,swathi muthyam). This song was overshadowed by nadham en jeevanae's popularity amongst the masses when the movie was released.
I basically grew to the way Illayaraja expresses the emotions of SPB with the violins playing. From the second para onwards, SPB starts wavering in a monotonous tone which Illayaraja enhances it with his violins showing the sadness in his song. the tabla and mrindhangam have also been used in a anger expressing way to contradict SPB's monotonous wavering towards the end to create a classic.If you listen towards the end you will get goosebumps listening to the fast movement of the violins changing minor to major and vice versa accompanied by the thavil(or is it urumi mellam?).
The Song can be discussed ina greater detail but due to my limited knowledge of the instruments and raagams used i could not express it. It would be good if someone can analyse this song in greater detail.

This song if not for anything else can be remembered for the High-pitch singing of SPB..
Raja has utilized Balu completely with regards to his talents and this song is a testimony in one such area.
Sadly, the songs were masterpieces in this rather flop movie.

Edho Mogam should be one of Raja's personal favorites, in my greatest of guesses. I have a point here.
I read that Raja played this song to some European musicians to mak them understand his creations. They, apart from understanding, actually were in awe of this song.
How many of use know KrishnaChander. Raja has this knack to give special songs to new comers and lesser-known faces who actually do a brilliant job as well (not sure about the number of takes though).
Eg: Krishnachander in today's pick
Deepan Chakravarthy in Poonkathavey (Nizhalgal)
Uma Ramanan in Ananda Raagam (Panneer Pushpangal)
Sai Baba in Mella Mella (Vaazhkai) and even in recent times
Kartik in Oliyile (Azhagi)
U can put the best of singers like a SPB or Janaki for each of these songs and they would have given a better output as well. But the choice of these singers, only Raja found something special in their talent to utlize them for special songs.
Coming to today's pick... The song has wonderful begining with a mesmerising Flute bit mixed with a Guitar background. Overall as for most Raja duets, this song has a rich mix of instruments used as interludes.
Suresh shouldn't be far behind Mohan in terms of being a beneficiary of Raja's songs.

Yes...this song was a fisherman village folk song...the beats and the initial humming in the prelude just enhances the song's reflection of a village folk song. The nadhaswaram usage in the first interlude is a good fusion by illayaraja with the beats. SP Shailaja's singing has to be commended here as she just shifts her pitch easily without affecting the song. Excellent song Swathy...:thumbsup:

Nice song. This song was supposedly my favorite some years back. Now I have promoted myself and I love SinoRita in this movie.
Coming back to today's pick.. Hulkster is spot-on with his comments on SPS singing. May definitely be her best in her short songs record.
I think this is more than a mountain tribe song tune than a fisher-folk tune. Raja has given us great fisher folk songs like Meenkodi theril (Karumbu Vil). Today's pick has simple use of flute and percussion.

Song: Kaun Dagar
Movie: Lajja(Hindi)
Music: IR(only for this song)
Singer: Latha Mangeshkar
Director: Rajkumar Santhoshi
Year: 2001
This song starts off with Lata's voice going to high pitches with the synth following her voice...the prelude seems like it is going to be some sort of hindi thatthuvam song and then the monotonous percussions set in to show a tune reflecting the troubles of a woman's life.
This song i just cannot stop describing it...whether its the complex flute usage following Lata's voice or the interludes where the violins just give you the thenpaandi effect is just mesmerising. Lata as usual wavers through the song with ease with the tune providing ample company to her voice.
IR has to be commended for bringing out the emotions of the situation by using the flutes and the violin to heighten it. This song actually does not come as a whole piece in the movie but rather comes in three different parts supposedly after each situation of the leading ladies is explained.
This song was one of the unrecognised masterpieces but no surprise that it was ignored due to the importance payed to BGM in bollywood and the film not being appreciated. Btw if you listen in the second interlude, IR creates a fusion with the western drums flowing with the melodramatic playing of the violins.
Thanks to RS for reminding me of this song.
Listen to it here http://www.raaga.com/channels/hindi/movies.asp and look for lajja

Just curious, has this tune been used in Tamil? And is there a reason why IR was selected for this tune?

IR was actually brought in to do the BGM for this movie...however the actual composer of the film Anu Malik was not able to satisfy The director with his tune for the situation...then the director asked IR to do and the next moment Kaun Dagar tune was played and immediately the director was impressed by it.. An off-beat pick, i would say on Paadavanthathor..
Among hundreds of Maestro's hits for Mohan, Paadavanthathor is an unsung classic.
The opening of the song will never give you an idea of the song tempo. It begins with a slow humming by PS and gradually gains tempo... This opening alone will last in one's memory.
Gr8 Pick Swathy. This song lost badlyin crowded classics from the same movie such as Iramana Rojave and sai Medaiyil.
Another watch and get bored Mohan movie with more than deserved classics by Maestro.

Renault sir...i have to absolutely agree with you about this song...i wonder how this song got overshadowed...let me list my comments about the song as this one is worthy of a detailed discussion.
Opening - Susheela opens the song with a humming that sounds like a soft melody and then the familiar guitar plucking sound accompanies her chords before the tempo picks up with a whole horde of female chorus joining in...the violins just add to the overall tempo.
Interludes - Flutes,Guitar,Violins and chorus are used to great effect with the usual accompaniment of drums..IR has to be a genius in fusing the violins and flutes in the interludes and the ensuing chorus is simply amazing!.
Tune - A different beating of the thavil followed by a very soft guitar plucking sound is what follows the tune..i would say this is a racey melody with susheela stealing the show.
As for Renault sir's query...yes i thought it was another singer too till i heard the usual broad base in yesudoss voice..it seems he has gone for a simple singing style instead of showing his emotions to suit the tune that he usually does.
Excellent pick by swathy i should say...never knew such a classic existed myself...:clap:

Remember seeing this movie somewhere in late 80s, standard boring love story. 'Paada Vandhathor Gaanam' comes early in the movie when Mohan and the heroine fall in love. Very bubbly song, infact loved this song on seeing the movie, lovely tune, preludes and interludes. Used to think it was Sailaja who sang the song those days (the heroine looks like her :roll:).
As Renault says, Yesudas did start 'Raja maalai thol serum' bit different than usual, it wasnt immediately evident. But the 2nd charanam style was typical Yesudas style, especially the way he starts 'Thenee'. BTW does'nt the Yesudas style somewhat remind you of 'Edho Ninaivugal' from 'Agal Vilakku' ?
'Eeramana Rojave' ranks number one for being repeated max number of times. There was one more classical PS solo 'Ragavane Ramana Ragunatha' that comes as a Navarathri golu song (used to be played in DD around Navarathri too).
Well does anyone remember the heroine's name ?

Nizhalgal is one of the best remembered works from IR's golden 80s.
All the songs have great preludes and interludes dominated by the violin, flutes and the veena (except the jazzy guitar in Madai Thirandhu alone). Especially the violin has spoken volumes in all the songs. Was VS.Narasimman the violinist for this one ?
Poongathave Thazh Thiravai has a fantastic violin prelude :thumbsup: I love Uma Ramanan's voice in this song. Deepan's voice has the crisp haunting.
Incidentally I am hooked to 'Dhoorathil Naan Kanda' from the same movie. Never heard the song before, happened to see it in someone's Top 10 IR song list, and was thinking 'Wow how did I miss this one :)'. Listen to the violin -> veena -> flute transition in the 1st prelude :) kind of reminds of 'Sanga Thamizh Kaviye' and 'Kanna Varuvaya' from 'Manadhil Urudhi Vendum' for strange reasons :roll:

Let me dissect this song in parts. Basically this song is a soft melody possibly reflecting on two lovers looking upon how their love came and progressed.
Prelude - Violins are of course evident as usual in the prelude as described by narayanan sir...but more outstanding is the veenai-flute-violin combination towards the end of the prelude which that describes the main tune of the song with the pallavi being described by veenai-flute combo and the anupallavi/charanam described by the veenai-violin combo.
Interludes - The first interlude has the thavil in a monotonous manner which then changes into a marriage procession type...possibly reflecting on the marriage dreams of both lovers...IR has to be commended for making the thavils sound more of a sad unison rather than the usual marriage style and the violins used before this happens is wonderfully orchestrated to show what the feelings were before this marriage dreams came. IR has to be given applause for this.
The second interlude is a wonderful tale of violins. The violins depict sadness in a way that sounds mesmerising especially at the end where it sounds like the feelings have just dropped to show the bad things that happened in their love and more surprising is the use of our carnatic violin to do this which easily brings out the emotions.
Tune - The main tune is mainly made up of the soft beating of drums and relies on the singing and humming of the two singers to bring out the emotions.
Great pick swathy yet again....quite a mesmerising song..:clap:

Swathy, some observations:
a) PS has sung a LOT, and not just a FEW with IR:-) May be in IR's world, a 100 popular songs with a singer might be termed `FEW':-))
b) The song 'pAda vandhadhOr ghAnam' by KJY-PS in iLamaikkAlangaL was heard all-over TN when released (even though `eeramAna rOjavE' was more popular). To call it an `unsung' classic, is, IMHO, incorrect. The whole album was a big hit in those days with public address systems...including the `padippila zero, nadippila hero' by SPS...In fact, `isai mEdaiyil' was relatively a bit less popular than `pAda vandhadhOr ghAnam'...(may be because the KJY-PS number was the first song in one side of the LP record)...This was the 2nd movie of motherland pictures, after the stupendous success of 'payaNangaL mudivadhillai' where they started featuring Raja and the `iLaiyarAjavin innisai mazhayil' in the posters / hoardings...
I think the songs were recorded with R Sundarrajan as the 'to-be-director', but he was dropped from the project and so was the original storyline. And Manivannan was roped in to come up with some stuff to fit in the songs...which was released later as a movie and did average business commercially. The songs were a big hit months before the film got released...(Kovaithambi quickly patched up with R Sundarrajan for their next big hit `nAn pAdum pAdal')...

What can I say of this song... I purposely took a day off to think and write of this song.. but I am always at lack of words to describe a Raja creation.
I wrote about Raja-BR combo striking rich whenever they joined due to their wonderful chemistry. This song should be the Kohinoor of their combo-creations.
Hulkster has done a wonderful dissection. My thoughts:
1. This song though a great one, needed to be sung by someone subtle in singing and not the flamboyant SPB and Janaki. Deepan and Uma Ramanan fitte the bill so well.
2. Most importantly Ravi and the actress, both are new and Raja fittingly used new face singers.
3. Maestro himself acknowledged in an interview that according to him BR and Vamsy (telugu) picturises his songs well. But this song was only picturised well in patches. The good ones include the actress while coming out of a pond, Raja gives a sound that signifies some kind of a resurgence, a flower bloom kind-off in the second charanam interlude, the door opening in the begining of the song that ends with a bang sound followed by a mellifluous Veena.
4. Lot of flowers are picturised in the song as flowers being the lyric-theme.
I had this song as a monphonic ring-tone in my mobile for about a year till very recently .

'Poonkathavae Thaazh Thiravaai'
Opened up many doors for us...the laymen of TN
IR just elevated the musical sense and knowledge of tamilian's with such kinds of innovative songs.
This is one of the songs which made us look upon to know what a counterpoint is and what is Western classical music all about atleast theoretically. The Song is an excellent example for how a fusion music to be done. Its a marriage between indian classical wester classical and tamil folk rhythms. We can dissect this songs to an article running to pages :) Iam avoiding it right now and listening to the song in loops for the ultimate bliss it gives.

adhu TL.Maharajan'ngov ;)
~~~~~~
Probably one of the less known Rajinikanth movies. Rajinikanth, Madhavi, Y.G.Mahendran in the lead. Rajini, YGM, Senthamarai act as police officers. vaguely remember YGM dying and Rajini singing this song to console Madhavi.
First heard this song, somewhere in 99/2000 in a Raja Hits of 1985 collection Echo cassette. This was a song that stood out in the collection. Very unusual start, initially I felt it was some gospel song (the prelude will give you that feel when you listen to it first) and defenitely many of you would love the prelude of the song.
I have a general liking towards sad songs, but this one was totally different. Nothing over senti, but a soft, soothing one that would put you to sleep much like 'Poongathu Thirumbuma' from 'Mudhal Mariyadhai'.
'Naan Urangum Naal vendum
Sayndhu kolla thol vendum
en kannil neer vendum sugamaga azhavendum'
is the pick of lyrics I liked. Even otherwise the lyrics was really situational and very much likeable.
The bass guitar+piano+violin combo has worked wonders in this song and I guess no percussion instruments were used in this song.
Not to forget Janaki and SPB have softened a lot in this song.
On the whole, contains all ingridients to make it one of my top 10 favourite list of sad songs.
Other songs from the same movie:
'Enna Desamo' - another pathos but inspiring song sung by Yesudas. Great lyrics though.
'Malare Malare Ullasam' - another bass guitar-piano-violin wonder.
There was one more song in the movie, dont think it was worth the listen
thamizhvanan,
Deepan Chakravarthy's debut was `poongathavE thAzh thiRavAi', I think. (He is the son of Tiruchy Loganathan, who sang some timeless classics like 'AsaiyE alai pOlE' and `adikkiRa kai dhAn aNaikkum', and the brother of TL Maharajan who is among the 'occasionally used' singers in TFM...some songs - `sevvAnamE pon mEghamE' in nallathoru kudumbam, `nenjE un Asai enna' in nAn pOtta savAl etc.)
Some of DC's other hits...
Oh nenjamE, idhu un rAgamE...(with SJ, film -enakkAga kAthiru, very good song and reasonably popular)
pani mazhai vizhum, paruvakkuLir ezhum (with SPS - same film, good song and regular on radio in its time)
sevvandhippookkaLil seidha veedu (with UR, film mellappEsungaL, hit song)
poojaikkAga vAzhum poovai sooRaiyAdal muRaiyO (solo, film kAdhal Oviyam, all other songs in this movie had SPB excelling, still this had its air time)
All the above were with IR's music. I think he acted as hero in `rANiththEni' or some other movie where Mahalakshmi (d/o AVM Rajan-Pushapalatha was heroine)..probably sung a couple of songs there too...
His other popular number was `Anandha dhAgam, un koondhal pookkaL theerkkumO' with SJ in vA indhappakkam. Music Shyam
BTW, DC wasn't his original name...This was IR's choice I think...(like Mano)
.
Deepan chankaravarthy won State award for his song Poojaikaaga vaazhum poovai from Kaadhal Oviyam
It was supposed to sing by SPB but after hearing DC's rendition, SPB asked IR to retain the same
[tscii:b8664d6bb4]'kannil yenna kaarkalam...' Un kannil neer vazhindhaal! What a song!
This song gives so much comfort. Soothing guitaring and violin interludes, comforting tabla, Balu's yedhamaana soulful singing, meaningful lyrics-'naan uranga naal vaendum saayndhu kollath thoal vaendum
en kannil neervaendum sugamaaga azhavaendum'
yellarukkum indha sugam thevai!! ONLY Shri.Ilayaraja gives that comfort with his music! We love you so much!
Two more comforting songs I can think of are ‘Nilavondru kanden yen jannalil......’-Amazing counterpoint melody, meaningful lyrics too
what can say about ‘nalam vazha...’-Balu solo in the film Marupadiyum. We can talk about this song some day!!
Swathi nalla choices you make! I need to follow up your list... :D Love, vinatha
yea, SPB mentioned abt this song in a recent show in Vijay TV. He said during that time multi-track recording system was already in place, so by the time he came to sing most of the song was composed.
The heroine of the film, Revathy after hearing the tune, wanted to see Balu sir singing and she was in the recording studio when SPB sang it. After the song was over, she apparently came to him and said "Balu sir, neenga paatu pada, naan nadikkanum"
:oops: sorry for not discussing anything related to music of the song, but this immdly came to my mind on hearing this song name :oops:
PS: thanx everyone for giving info on DC. I thot his rendition of poongathave was so perfect that at times i suspected it cud be even IR singing the song (i didn find any resemblance in voice, just one among the probables list). I didn know he sang "poojaikkaga". to have sung one song in a film wehre all the songs are sung by SPB and to give a hit song in that is gr8 (ofcourse IRs composition was too good to let that song down :) )
Super song
Song :
Sithadai Thene Sevanthi Poo Rani
Thootadum Poo Pol Katti Kolla Vaa
Mutharam Soodum Mannavanai Thedum Acharam Potti Otti Kolla Vaa
Film : Chinna Kannamma
Anyone heard it deeply :roll:.
I think it is a slow version of "Rakkamma Kaiya thattu".
It has a shadow of Rakkama Kaya Thattu and IR has produced this song with his strong stamp.
The beat and interlude music (violin and rthym) definitely remind me RKT song.
At last saranam he had done the song with folk type rhythm.
A nice and neat song
