It is IR's mistake to give him those panangais. But Mano rendered it and has to face the brickbats. Naan apdi thaan. I dont know diplomacy. I say it as I see it. If it offends you, sorry.

Listened to the below song (Kadhambini (??) raagam). Is this raagam close to some other raagam? Asking because the tune/music gives a feel that is very close some other IR's sad song. Could not recollect it now. Charanam tune seems to shift (tabla sound also changes a little) and come back to track.

Achacho! Neenga onnu. Enakkum raagam ellam theriyaadhu. Zero knowledge. Andha site'la pottu irundha raagathai appadiye inga ezhudhinen ...avvalavudhan :). I am trying to recollect, but no luck so far. Kandippa oru naal gnabagam vandhidum, but meanwhile I thought I will post it here and check if anyone else can get it.

I really liked the charanam tune. The tonal shift (??) while repeating "Ullathil aazhathil" (1st charanam) and "Koothu kulungidum" (2nd charanam) and tabla sound change sort of surprised me.

Online is not the best way for learning carnatic, but its the only way available to some of us. Its ok if you are not too serious about it, otherwise you should get a teacher.

Even though the songs aired on radio were in poor quality but we enjoyed it more. In those good old days, sitting in front of radio to listen vivdhbharathi or srilankan stations comes into mind. Most of the time they used astonish us by airing wonderful IR songs one after another.

As we were kids/teens , we enjoyed the songs much more than today.More over having those friends arround to discuss about IR and his songs added muche required flavour to it.

Now, even though i have almost all of IR songs in good quality in my ipod/hard disk , i am not able to reach that level of enjoyment. I still remember the day, when i was walking along the road, i heard Agninatchthram songs had been played in one of those house along that road , i just stopped and stood there to listen all of those songs for the next 20 or 30 mins. i was only 10 or 12 yrs old then.

irir, I remember reading in the same Forum years back from a hubber about Guitar Prasanna being given a space to improvise a little in this song, while recording. I dont know how far its true, but that could be a reason. Nevertheless, the guitar pieces are amazing.

Yes. As you say, you don't know how the song got converted into a classical number given the way it starts.

I may be wrong but I feel the song is based on Sriranjani. Depending on how Sriranjani is used, it can sometimes sound like Reethigowla and sometimes like Aboghi. I think the Sriranjani in this song is so used that it gives shades of both these ragas. My 'swaragnanam' is zero and so I can be mistaken !! (The 'silu silu' part does suggest Reethigowla)

Listening to "ennenna paada padutharan" from aandaan adimai. Nice prelude and no words to describe that 1st interlude. Harini is pretty good in this song. It clearly shows what Bhava is lacking.

Tune at "thookkam kettu pochu" reminded me of "vetti varinju kattu" line of a song from japanil kalyanaraman movie.

An overall good song, especially for nice music and charanam tune.

Don't know what raagam it is. Now that others confirmed it to be sivaranjani, the unforgettable music (read flute) that comes to my mind is "kuyil paatu" (swarnalatha version) song from "en raasavin manasila". The 2nd interlude especially is heavenly, the way it starts with single violin, continues with amazing flute piece and that (tone) shift and finally ends again with single violin. Speechless.

hi Usha, Shivaranjini must be the most fav raga of almost all the Indian MD's after Sindubairavi and [Yaman]Kalyani. But the way Raja has handled it, I can bet no other MD would have done. Normally they employ this scale o depict pathos/poignant situation where as Raja has used it for romantic["Naan pooveduthu vaikkanum" , ecstasy["adi athaadi", erotic "dhak dhak karne laga"'s original telugu version, grief ,"oru moodan kadhai sonnaan" and so on...

Y'day I was listening to " Idhaya Koil " song (Idhayam oru koil..) in FM. Actually, I like both SPB & IR's version.

This song triggered my thought. Right from Payanangal Mudivahillai days, Gnani has given us some immortal gems in the films produced by Kovai thambi's Motherland Pictures.

I turned nostalgic, thinking how I used to be glued in front of that small tape recorder i had, listening to Gnani's songs during my school / college days. I used to buy hundreds and hundreds of cassettes and record my fav. songs.

Shri.Ilayaraaja wanders-delirious :) remember the song yedhedho ennam valarthen...punnagai mannan too pallavi goes in pahadi melody but charanams deviates. Same in naadham en jeevaney.... Pallavi absolute Abheri but charanams, Raaja runs in Keeravani scale. poovomaa.... chinna thambi.... pallavi gives Sivaranjani bhaavam and then he runs on keeravani notes, kaadhoram lolaakku kadhaiya.... just about your ears start to realize ambience of Raga ASAAVERI, Ilayaaraja runs away, takes off with his job of churning out tunes. :)

Thanks Compli. I didn't know the details of the kutthu song as to who sung it. I later checked out rakkamma.com site (on advice of RS). I find that it has been sung by Karthik Raja, Yuvan and Venkat Prabhu. Not sure who is doing the bulk of the singing as I am not familiar with their voices.

A very interesting, off-beat track!! Guys would be interested in watching this video !

A systematic drumming pattern and a female voice clearly hinting us that it is an Aerobics Lesson!! At 00:15, begins the melodious music from the electric versions of the guitars..Solid Bass-Bass combination!!

Notice that one Bass guitar plays a slightly higher pitch while the other guitar that keeps going up and down the scale SLAPS and POPS very gently and carefully!!This is something VERY VERY VERY DIFFICULT TO DO BECAUSE THE GUITARIST HAS TO TAP THE STRING SOFTLY WITH A FINGER AND SIMULTANEOUSLY PLUCK IT...THIS IS EASILY SAID THAN DONE!! At the same time, his other hand must move up and down the fretboard!! I have noticed throughout the song that this slapping-popping goes on flawlessly!! My god, what a Wizard , our Maestro!!!
If you are still not clear with what I said, pause the player at 00:15 and play it again...I am talking about the low-pitched Bass guitar....

Now at 00:29, the female voices go "three three three.." and SLAP-POP BASS GUITAR GETS INTENSE!

the pallavi at 00:36, when Jananki sings "Chikendra Aadaiyil" the Bass only POPS...there is a pause and the aerobic 1-2-3-4..now at this aerobic count, the Bass Slaps and Pops!!! next line "Sittukkal Aadattum" and after that the aerobic count..This time the Bass and trumpet climb up the scale!! Wow!! Too much brainwork by Maestro!

the first interlude with the aerobic count and music at 01:37 with the trumpet..at 01:39, the Bass guitar SLAPS AND POPS again gently...now i cannot call this Bass as an accompaniment to the trumpet because it is more than just accompaniment! Raajaish Bass, I can call it!
Here onwards, trumpet keeps playing and the Bass? You guessed it, Pops and slaps!!

Now notice here that the Bass gets Humble! But it still upto something behind Janaki's voice!! Little lesser slap and Pop!!

Now notice the jump from charanam to pallavi...After the 1-2-3-4, the Bass slaps loud and Pops still louder!!

I am no expert but I concur with you that the talam can be considered as Desadhi. The main song starts 6 aksharams (1 1/2 beat) from the samam. Since the talam is Adi, this start can be considered Desadhi. Slightly tricky to get it since the beat is constant and you don't have any stress points to go with.

The 1st interlude with a lovely violin start, following which we hear an electric guitar with a keyboard with a sound bass guitar in the background…at 01:28, there is a short and sweet tune from the flute..I think the first interlude ends with the electric version of the violin…

Brass Blowers !!! Nice phrase. The first interlude is fantastic. Amazing brass blowing :) Second interlude with initially the voices dominating takes your breath away. Outstanding stuff. Those discussing in the other thread about various musical forms tried by Raja should listen to this. How will you classify this song? Jazz? Or shall we call it Razz or Raaz? (Pardon the pun. Razz can be thought of as a combination of Raja and Jazz. Raaz stands for secret in Hindi. It is indeed a very secret sauce that Raja has which enables him to fuse many musical forms so seemlessly). Needless to say, as Usha pointed out, superb singing by SPB.

That part from 2:41 is actually a 3 part harmonization - you can hear 3 separate layers of SPB voice in harmony. I think that IR must have composed it meticulously and ensured SPB sang it correctly. It is very tightly arranged in terms of rhythm and harmony - there is no room for improvisation there.

I'm not a jazz expert but it does seem like an attempt at that style of singing. But the song is very structured so I wonder how much of it was completely improvised.

I guess Jazz purist may not classify any of Illayaraja's songs are jazz since he defines the whole structure of the song and there is not much room for improvisation by either the singer or the instrumentalist. Hence they would prefer to call it a song with 'jazz feel'. I remember reading Guitar Prasanna saying something on these lines when he reviewed the music of 'Mumbai Express'.

I loved "solla solla enna perumai" - great guitar work. why should IR do any heavy metal when he has songs with guitar riffs like this?

"Paavayargal maan polae" though starts like qawwali it develops into different styles... the rhythm in "pattu selai kattum" parts is interesting.. I like the "pilot" analogy - he is like a pilot in an air show, we don't know where he will turn next! (unfortunately, nowadays he is landing in the Hudson river - great pilot skills wasted on polluted rivers)

Usha: Ragam of 'Chinna Poonkodi'? Looks more scale based than raga based. I could hear traces of Keeravani but I am not sure. Can be some other scale like Gowri Manohari as well.

I tried analyzing the song. If I go with Adi Talam of 8 beats and start one beat earlier, still I don't get the ending of the pallavi correctly. i.e., I don't land one beat before the samam. The first two lines start before the beat and the next two lines on the beat. Instead if you consider this as a simple Eka Talam (4 beats), then starting one beat earlier, get you to the right place when the pallavi ends and restarts.

As with many Raja songs, here too there are different starting points within the song. While the Pallavi starts one beat before samam, the charam actually starts one beat after the samam. After both the singers have sung two lines each, it lands on the samam and continues like that for the next 3 lines, before the final line ends up bringing it one beat before the samam for the start of pallavi again. So much asymmetry in the song but Raja hides all this behind the steady beat of the tabla.

I always wonder why Raja's songs are so catchy even though the background rhythm sometimes goes very steady. I guess it is because of these variations in take off points and the asymmetry generated due to this which keeps the interest alive.

Usha, "azhagiya kaNNE", , an onscure movie by Mahendran has few amazing numbers like "chinna chinna kaNgaL endu" , an intriguing solo by KJY , "naan irukkum indha naaL varaikkum", an endearing solo by SJ and a nice bhakthi song "pala janma janmaandhara bandhangal" by SPS and your SOTD. I infact rated your pick as just another average song for IR's standards of 80's. Now, it sounds good enough , only BSS is trying too hard to sound coy :)
