I will provide my analysis to this song...first of all hats off to narayanan sir for picking such a soothing melody...:clap:

Prelude - The opening of the song starts off with the piano breezing through a melodic phase and then it slowly waves off into a flute piece going slowly and softly supported by the faint sound of violins which then finish off the prelude...as Usual for such songs IR will always orchestrate his preludes with either Guitar-flute-violin combo or violin-piano-flute combo..he has yet again done a different melodious attempt at fusing the piano and flute together.

Interludes - The first interlude just follows off from SPB's soulful singing where the violins are orchestrated to highlight the melodramatic tune but wavers in a slightly melodic way. In the second interlude the Piano just continues off from where it started from the prelude with a more sad overtone of violins accompanying it...following the interludes you will get the sense that this is a very sad song.

Tune - The monotonous beating of the tabla gives away the idea of the song and SPB's soulful singing brings the song to the fore...S Janaki has to be complimented for giving the tune a added lifeline with her seemingly sad singing.

This song can be termed as a melody and a lullaby with the way the interludes flow with the song...although Raja has given us similar songs...the use of the piano in the prelude and the second interlude has to be greatly commended. Once again hats off to narayanan sir for a great pick....:clap:...and excellent work by swathy to allow his pick..:D

I am finding a striking similarity (at least in the opening tune) between Kannil Enna and the song Thulli Thulli Pogum Penne song sung by KJY in a film named Velichham, muic scored by Manoj Gyan.

Yes, tune has similarity. Thulli thulli.... Velicham - KJJ sings in higher octave. But the mood of these two songs are totally different!

Swathy i have got to give it to you again...you found a brilliant song once again...my goodness just how many such songs were forgotten...thanks for reminding us of such songs Swathy...:thumbsup:

Prelude: The piano and bass guitar opens up with a westerisation touch which is soothing, briefly followed by a mesmerising soft flute piece which just gives you the wind blowing on you effect. Brilliant orchestration by IR who usually revels in giving us wonderful openings that usually underplay the tune.

Interludes: The Bass guitar plays like a background instrument for the first instrument which just brings the melodic effect with the flute combining with two instruments(another guitar or keyboard?) to add weight to the bass guitars melodic touch. The instrumentation has to be commended by IR here.

Tune: The faint beating of the drums and a interesting combination of lap clapping sound(possibly done on drums)makes up the instrument of the tune with the bass guitar playing as a undertouch(it sometimes sounds like a harp)....Jayachandran's singing is just like a cool winter breeze on the ears...he just brings out the life in the tune and can just put you to bliss with his vocal touches to the tune....What makes the tune interesting is the constant plucking of the bass guitar throughout the tune and the interludes which adds the soothing melodic effect.

Overall a mini song which would have been noticed better if it was given more time...nevertheless a brilliant melody by IR once again and thanks to swathy for picking such a gem...:clap:

This song will fall under the same category as unsung greats in a single album.. similar to Paadavanthathor from Ilamai Kaalangal.

Hulkster has given the best description with proper dissection. I would probably rate this higher than all other songs in the movie.. awesome composition.

If one listens to such songs first-up in the morning.. am sure one's day is made fresh throughout.

I recommend all to try this. I have experienced this. Today's pick is an excellent excuse to beat stress.. the Raja way.

Serene lullaby from Raaja! Song sung by Sarath Babu to his small kid and his hurting teenage sister-Revathi to comfort them to sleep! Picturization was very nice! Fantastic movie by Mani Rathnam!

Rajasaranam, In spite of the songs u mentioned being good as well, today's pick is the BEST.

Whenever this movie is telecasted I make sure that I watch this title song... Coz u will never get to see this song again except when the movie is shown.

One of the best SJ-IR melodies. Everything is too good for this song.. Raja and Janaki's smooth flow into this song.. the humming in the middle interludes, high-pitch and low pitch singing equally matched.

Another interesting aspect of this song is that Raja didn't give much musical intro.. it just suddenly begins...other example that comes to my mind is Saami Kitta (Avarampoo).

Swathy u are in temendous form with your picks and this one stands special as none of us expected this song for sure and I have to accept that this is certainly in my Top 25 Raja songs, though I don't normally rank my fav Raja songs.

Well let me say that swathy has just discovered another gem...:clap:

Usually IR's title songs are orchestrated in a way that it sticks with the audience mind as the idea of the movie...for example kanne navamaniyae for En Bommukutti Ammavakku usually supported with catchy/soulful singing rhythms. Velakku Vecha Nerathilae is one such song.

The tune is instrumentated with the medium paced beating of the thavil all the way and the flute supporting the singers when they sing "thanthanana"....but the real soul of the song is IR and Janaki's vocals that really lift the tune.

The first interlude is given a delightful description by the shenoy and the flute with our indian percussions here and there and the second interlude is basically a walkthrough of the chorus with the flute sounding here and there....IR has gone for the power of the lyrics and the liveliness of the vocals to bring out this song....brilliant pick by Swathy again..:clap:

RS sir maybe due to the more evident orchestration and more vibrant use of instruments in your above mentioned songs those songs seem classier but then again IR is one musician who can give us out of the world orchestrated songs and also give us a simple tune with no classic orchestration that is etched into our mind...:)

Never heard this song in the movie even though I've seen it quite a few times :roll: been a long time since Ive seen it too, lot of chances to forget too :?.

I did hear quite a few times now, very rustic, twilight feel duet song. I love the flute that plays along with Janaki. reminds me a lot of that haunting flute of 'Thaayum Naane' from 'Engeyo Ketta Kural'.

Like rajasaranam, I too seem to have a soft-corner for 'Andhi Varum Neram' and 'Chinnanjiru Kiliye', maybe bcos I havent heard this enough to grow on me :roll:

Another beautiful song by maestro, under the magical voice of yesudoss. whenever I listen to this song, i get reminded of Adnan sami' "Kabhi to nazar milavo" (bcoz thats the song I first heard among these).Just get a feeling that first line alone is similar, may be bcoz both are hindustani based, but i dont know.
I now have to search for this song in my archive bcoz my collection is very poorly indexed :D.

Ilayaraja's response for Jagjit Singh type of songs lovers. This statement sums up the overall theme of this song.

But that's not complete there. A hindustani classic mixed with Raja's typical melody. A class song to show Raja's yet another versatile character.

Not heard this song much as well. Nice pick. Kudos to Narayanan and Swathy.

Actor Karthik, I think will not be far away from being a beneficiary of excellent Raja songs in their movies in the lines of Mohan, Suresh and Ramarajan.

Great pick narayanan sir...:clap:...As renault sir summarised it..this is a hindustanic classic song with raja's melodic touch.

Prelude - A familiar hindustani styled humming picks off unaccompanied with the soothing plucking of the guitar. The prelude is not focused much here by IR but we can guess from here that there is a hindustani touch in the orchestration.

Interludes - The first interlude has the mild beats of the western drum before the flute takes over in a melodic phase slowly accompanied by the sweet strumming of our veenai which at the end goes into a fusion with the flue which is quite refreshing to hear...brilliant orchestration in the veenai piece by IR. The second interlude starts the same way with the flute piece replaced by a jazzy style of trumpeting and a short fusion with the veenai..you can fall in love with the way the jazz notes are orchestrated here.

Tune - The tune has the hindustani style of beating the thavil and thats all for the instrumentation part. But be put into bliss by yesudoss fluent singing...he just makes it sound like we are listening to a hindustani song but at the same time he also brings out the trademark raja melody style...complicated rhythms yet made simple by Yesudoss....listen to this song without the hindustani instrumentation and give our tamil
style of beating the thavil and you can feel IR's melody more.

A really unpicked gem by Narayanan sir...thanks for this...:thumbsup: and lets hope we can expect such fusions in the forcoming hindi films of IR...:D

The movie released in 1992, dont even remember hearing about the movie then. Very ordinary village feud type movie, nevertheless failed BO. heard it first when I saw the movie somewhere in mid-90s.

Its kind of a melting moonlit song which Karthik sings in reply to an arrogant carnatic styled mini song Kushbu sings(i guess 'Jhankara sudhi seiguvai' ?). I have a special attraction towards Yesudas songs, especially the Yesudas-IR combo. This song would be in the selected list of them. The highlight is the lyrics.

Some of the songs I liked rare and hit ones are mostly from yesteryear Oliyum Oliyum and the Friday, Saturday, Sunday movies in DD that used to bring out the obscurest movies under the sun. Inspired from them, I occasionally collected a few songs. I used to be an ardent ARR fan.Collect every cassette until 97. Although started in college. A more serious IR song following and song collection would'nt have been a reality without TFMPage (along with Doordarshan and Chennai 107.1 FM).

Understandable most of us seem to have unearthed IR gems only after internet revolution ;)

Exactly my thoughts :thumbsup: . and it also depends upon ur state of mind. how well u respond to the weirdos of the MD, at times u dont strike the frequency of the MD, and dont really understand the beauty of the songs. It all combines to give this experience.

Wow!!

Swathy, u seem to pick diamonds from Maestro's creations. Amazing song.

I have seen movies waiting for some special songs. Today's pick is one such. Not sure whether the movie has any other songs.

The opening of this song is fantastic with sounds resembling bell sounds slowly leading into the song begining. This song was also picturised well with Pratap and Radhika.. acting brilliantly as lunatics. The theme is very difficult so as to signify love between two mentally retarted people.. in their own world.. it needed such a subtle melody and who else would have come with such a brilliant composition.

I would require Baroque's assistance here as I seem to pick some counterpoint effects in this song..

eg: The tune in one of the charanams

1. Kaatrodu Modhum...

2. Kaveri Neer Alai adhu...

3. Engengilum sugam..

All have different tunes and seems like a counterpoint for each one's predecessor.. I am just writing the lyrics as I think of this song... Guess the lyrics are right.

I remember seeing Pratap's interview recently where he said Meendum Oru.. was actually the first tamil film to get a National Award and not Samsaaram Adhu... as most of us believe. Raja's song is certainly a crowning jewel in the movie's credentials.

Have to give it to you Swathy, once again.. all your selections Rocks!!!

Is'nt this the movie with characters like Juju thatha, gappi,sarasu. guess this movie won the national award too. Never knew that movie had such a nice song :o

Mildly reminds me of 'Vizhiyile Mani Vizhiyile' from 'Nooravadhu Naal'. Both their voices sounds somewhat different, especially Janaki's.

Intricate orchestral work by Raaja!
Prelude starts with Violin Sonata (ie more than one movement for one or more instruments!). (within 0:08 sec more than one violin displaying more than one movement)
Second interlude has group of violins (quartet??? three or four) & piano(Sonata also means musical composition with piano accompaniment) It is PERCUSSION LESS segment. — That is the specialty of this magical music!! But first interlude has percussion!

Counterpoint is different from Sonata.
Counterpoint is theme contrasting with main theme-emphasize by/is contrast!
In this song-prelude doesn’t have counterpoint.
Second interlude also doesn’t have counterpoint!

Great pick swathy yet again...:clap:...let me post my views on this song.

Prelude - This song starts off with a eerie like movement of the violin before moving to a more broader movement of the violin and swiftly changing into a keyboard composition which contradicts the violin movement sounding more delightful which is then ended by the all too familiar melodic movements of the violins...brilliant orchestration in the first part by Raja possibly reflecting on the condition of the two lovers.

Interludes - The first interlude is a delightful tale of violins which baroque and renault have highlighted with two violins being orchestrated to possibly show the doomed feelings of the two lovers and another pair of violins inverse to the movement of the first pair of violins playing before swiftly accompanied by the flute to show a soothing effect. The second interlude is a even more complex and intricate orchestration of the violins. At the start a pair of violins start building the tempo before moving into a minimised relfection of the first interlude with another pair of violins again inverse to the movement of the first pair..but what is more surprising is the changes between the minor and major scale in the second phase of the first pair of violins and the second pair of violins. Even more sweeter is the monotonous movement of a violin which is being played differently from the usual style of playing violins..sounding more like a interbreed between our carnatic violin and the guitar. I really have to give it to IR for the orchestration in both interludes in which the second pair(playing softly) contradicting the first pair(louder ones) that just brings out the doomed effect...:clap:

Tune - The tune is accompanied by percussions and a very mild movement of the violins. There is a very catchy rhythm when athi kaalai neramae puthithaana raagamae is sung which i guess is the charanam. This adds a more pacey melodic effect to the song. The impressions has to be on the orchestration of the violins by IR.

I can see why renault sir feels it sounds like a counterpoint where the violins meet each other...at first i thought it was a counterpoint as both are playing different movements and they meet without complicating each other...but seeing it again the violins are actually complimenting each other which rules out the counterpoint.

One more song where one of the interludes does not have any Percussion is "Illamai ennum poongatru" (Pagallil oru iravu) the second interlude does not have any percussion instrument. Base guitar is used for percussion.

An interesting thing in this song is in the first interlude Tabla comes for 10 to 12 seconds (with flute) and in the whole song tabla does not come at all.

Again talking about counterpoint the pallavi is sung without counterpoint (chorous) and then again it is sung with counterpoint. Please note that in the middle of all the saranam (in all the three) there is an excellent counterpoint.

Another interesting thing about this song is the instrument Santhoor is consistently used in Prelude and in all other interludes as well. The whole song runs for 4:11 seconds and duration of every interlude (~26 secs) is more than the saranams (~23 secs).

Thanks for picking a song which I uploaded in goolgoose some time back. It is a very rare song and I was searching for a clear copy for many years. Finally I managed to get a CD with SPB/SJ duets and I simply bought the CD just for this one song!

He has used, for the first time in Tamil music I guess, Indonesian Bamboo percussion in parts of the interludes and it simply lifts the song to very great heights where no one else can reach.

The melody and mood of this song is so heavenly that it did and still does bring me into an heavenly state everytime I hear this song.

How great it would be if such gems are re-recorded with digital technology again with the same orchestration!!! The only sad thing is SJ is loosing her voice and SPB would probably still do justice to the song if done again now.

Swathy another good pick..although its not a out of the world orchestration..the song's tune has IR's stamp all over it and it shows he is still refreshed.

Prelude - The flute starts off on a soothing note before raising the tempo towards the end...a beautifully orchestrated flute piece reminding us of the pre 80s era.

Interludes - The flute is starting off from where it began in the prelude with a mild movement of the violins in the background...basically a slightly minimised version of the prelude with violins. This gets repeated when the singers finish a stanza as in a sort of theme music in that tune.

Tune - The tune is accompanied by a catchy beating of the western drums which adds to the mesmerising rhythms of the song...Raja has focussed on the tune and the vocals without adding any complex orchestration or instrumentation. Possibly this song highlights the feelings of the lead pair when they come to know they are in love...and the theme music like flute piece accompanies the tune once a particular stanza possibly the charanam is finished...which at times resembles like a interval to the song.

The tune is definitely very catchy and the real heroes of this song is the catchy rhythms of the tune and the soft singing of the lead duo who bring out the emotions of delight in love aptly...good pick swathy..:clap:

Surprised no one has posted their comments about this beautiful song...swathy great pick again..next time i wunt be saying great pick as i have decided everything is great..:D

Prelude - The sweet strumming of the guitar is succeeded by the famous chanting of sa re ga ma
and then a vocal choir piece singing the charanams which is very catchy and at the same time soothing to hear. Good innovation by IR to include the sa re ga ma chants to give a different side to the song.

Interludes - The first interlude starts off with a delightful flute piece which combines with the guitar in the background well. Then there is a two combo with the flute-choir-flute-choir before the keyboard takes over....the village chanting at the end is a surprise end to the first interlude. The second interlude is actually a two counterpoint humming by the choir which then briskly flows into a mini concerto of various tamil instruments...the thavil...western drums and our urumi mellam...it is really a masterpiece by IR in the two counterpoint humming in the choir and the concerto.

Tune - The tune is instrumentated by a medium beating of the thavil...and is basically a tamil village folk song. But the real catch and genius at display is the use of the choir to make it sound like those songs in churches where the choir usually brings out the music whenever the lead singers sings...this is really innovative and a different attempt by IR as the lead singer's singing is accompanied by the choir which really does remind us of the church choirs..and to a certain extent the humming in african songs...brilliant by IR...:clap:

Have to admit that haven't heard this song before.

I liked Hulks dissection especialy the guitar strumming one. Raja has very intelligently mixed guitar with Sare-gama singing by the chorus and the same leads into an absolute native song.

YEah I too found the similarities between this and 'Naan Pudicha' song when i listened to it.
I saw the movie during a lazy afternoon telecast in one of the channels few months back.I missed the titles and some portion of the movie. Whenever i see an unknown movie[ atleast for me] from the late 70's or early 80's i try to concentrate on the BGM and song to find out who the MD is :) I was watching this movie for sometime and i knew it should be Raja the instant some BGM pieces came by. but I confirmed it only after listening to this song :thumbsup:
A classical example of fusion between Indian and western Classical with folk music. the transition or the fusion between these forms are seemless and nobody could categorise this into any of the genres.
On a side note when i started catergorising IR's songs in MP3 tag I found such difficulties... sooner i found them to be of the genre 'ILaiyaraaja' and now all my mp3 collection of Raja's songs are categorised and tagged as 'genre Ilaiyaraaja' :)
The choral work in this songs is amazing and I wonder why this man is not doing such works anymore :(
There is another song in this movie goes like 'Kalyaana raaman' which has got interesting lyrics and a fusion of western pop and tamil folk

Prelude - The prelude starts off with a single rhythm beat of a instrument which gives us the "wake-up" effect underlined by a katcheri like vocal chords by the singer reflecting on the love blossoming between the lead pair. And the sudden surprise is when your expecting a monotonous tune..the guitar comes out gleefully to depict the tune putting off the listener of any sad/katcheri song format.

Interludes - After a short two instrument combination by the keyboard and a harp like instrument the guitar takes off in the usual extraordinary format which is very melodious followed by a more slower strumming of the guitar which is pleasing on the ears. The second interlude starts off on a high pitched flute piece which descends to a low tempo with a percussion accompanying it to give the soothing jazz effect which then transcends into a fast paced melodious piece given two version displayed by the guitar then the keyboard which ends off the interlude on a different note.

Tune - This is one of the many famous catchy melodious tunes given by IR for us made even more sweeter by the lead pair's singing..especially the la la la chorus which is soft. The basic instrumentation is a very slow beating of the thavil and western percussions with a very very mild strumming of the guitar which accompanies the charanams...overall a beautiful masterpiece from IR with another mastering of the guitar particularly in the prelude and interludes...nanri swathy intha paathukaaga..:thumbsup:

Yet another Raja's gift for a Mohan movie. Has some resemblences to Paadavanthathor (Ilaiami Kaalangal).. with regards to subtle singing of the male singer in certain areas of the song.

This song is a melodious and soothing song....nice pick swathy...:thumbsup:

Prelude - With the usual hindustani styled intro by Lataji with her broad humming...her voice is supported by a great interplay of violins in the background with the first part sounding quite eerie and the second part going into a high tempo of delight...brilliant orchestration in the violins part by IR...:clap:

Interludes - The violins come again going high and then low possibly reflecting on the contradiction of feelings of the heroine before flowing into a monotonous yet melodious manner with the keyboard providing the melodious effect and the violins providing the monotonous effect before ending off in vintage IR style at the end. The second interlude has the violins ascending higher and higher into a pathos mood before the keyboard goes into a very monotonous version. However here comes the masterpiece of the violins coming in a brisk movement and then changing into a high pitched movement which is underplayed by the same movement but more low pitched which contradicts each other before ending on a more faster version of the starting violin movements. Innovative violin orchestration towards the end of the second interlude by IR.

Tune - The tune is made up of the usual slow paced beating of the thavil and it just relies on the fluidity of the singer's vocals and the lyrics but listen to the end of the tune when the familiar tragedic sounding movement of the violins complement the singer's vocals. Without even listening to the tune you can understand that something tragedic is going to happen by listening to the orchestration of the violins in the end...in one word..mesmerising..:clap:

As for the IR version...it is even more pathos sounding and the prelude starts off differently with a single rhythm beat of some percussion before the nasal voice of IR takes over the song...however i prefer the lata version as it has the orchestration of violins in vintage IR style...great pick swathy..:clap:

I am not able to listen to this song as there are some gliches in the song but of what i can hear this is a pathos melody which is really made even more emotional by janaki's almost cry like singing...and the tune is instrumentated by the thavil with it going very pathos like. The interludes are a brilliant shade of violins...i could not hear very well but just hearing some of the violins moving soulfully just can bring tears in your eyes...great orchestration as usual by IR in the violins part.

Great pick swathy...this is one of IR's forte..pathos melody which he is really a genius at...another type of pathos melody is where instead of violins human vocals are made to sound soulful...:clap:

this is the raja's trademark and as usual pathos song.

as hulkster said, the singers(KJJ and janaki) are crying and singing in the second saranam.

the tabala's rhythm pattern is simple.And from starting to end of the song, it wont change.

in the first interlude there is solo violin bit, that will take in to complete pathos mood.after completion of that bit, the talking between flute and piano will start. i feel they are talking with each other.

the lyrics also good.(ex: "Nee enthan thayaga naan unthan seyaga marum nerame")

Another important thing is i think Raja definitely reused this pallavi's tune as "kuyile kuyile" in "pulan visaranai".(i dont know which movie first came?)

This song is so dear to me...often in repeat mode on the car...very soothing...the "special effect" sounds in the first interlude (flute? keyboard? synthesiser?) is awesome and I used to wonder as to what instrument is this, when it got released...I have same question till now...though it's similar to the "vizhiyilE malarndhadhu" flute sound (one that comes just before the saraNam begins as `kaiyaLavu pazhuththa mAdhuLai'), one cannot conclude it's flute...(may be pan flute?)...

tabla beats...hmmm...I can keep listening to them for any amount of time...udalukkum manadhukkum nanmai payakkum isai...

Chitra is awesome, especially bringing in so much power to the song when she starts 'vAzhththi unnaippAdavE...'. Dasettan is as cool as ever, scoring another smoothie...

only chinnappisiRu, IMHO, is the way Chitra says `ravi vaRRRmAvin Ovium'...konjam vallina Ra pOl enakkuththONum...otherwise a perfect song...

Swathy....thanks for picking another gem..i used to listen to this song when i was young..but i did not know the movie..thanks for reminding me...:thumbsup:

Prelude - The Veenai intro is truly mesmerising to say the least. It is melodious and at the same time catchy...you just feel like IR uses the veenai like the bass guitar at times..the tempo he uses for this veenai piece just sticks into your mind straight away..another instance is in the start of the namthana namthana song where the veenai is used as a pacey instrument. The flute then ends the prelude with a slight adaptation of the tune with the usual vintage IR touch.

Interlude - The keyboard used in the first stanza depicts delightness like a butterfly flying..the whole piece just gives you that feel and it is then contradicted by the more soulful sounding violins piece which just moves between melancholy and delight. IR is adept at using interludes to tell two tales of feelings using his instrumentation and orchestration like one instrument playing the delightful version before another instrument showing it in a more different manner with innovative notes. The chorus ends this interlude in the same style as the violins. The second interlude starts with a violin playing high and low the whole way before it complements the chorus. The chorus is actually the same adaptation of the violins of the first interlude with the voices being more melancholic while the violins were somewhere in between. The flute and veenai end this interlude with the flute playing the charanam and the veenai ending it very swiftly. Innovative orchestration as usual by IR..:thumbsup:

Tune - The tune is instrumentated by the tabla with the violins coming at times to heighten the feelings. Basically this is a melancholic romantic melody with KJY sounding his usual style. Yesudoss is the singer who actually makes a difference with his monotonous singing at the soulful parts and a totally contradicting more delightful and soothing singing in the pallavi. Chitra only has little verses to sing but as usual she compliments the yesudoss with her notable flair.

Basically one of IR's best unsung gems which is one of his genre...I think it is safe to say that even under melodies IR ha created various genres like catchy,pacey and melancholic melodies...this is just one of them.

Anyways a different pick from Swathy...i will have to give abit of explanation for this song's tune as it is very similar.

Prelude - The flute starts off the song haunting yet melodiously...just like in IR's singing self in nothing but wind..like its expressing a emotion before smoothly translating into a adaptation of the tune in the usual IR style.

Interludes - The flute is back in the first interlude going abit high pitched and perhaps continuing the tune in a more emotive way. As usual the orchestration is typical IR...usually IR uses his flutes to continue the tune but adds a different emotion like movement to make it appealing on first hearing. The more captivating part is the flute is only accompanied by silence(excluding the tune's instrumentation) like in his Singing self track. This soon transcends into the violins moving delightfully to change the emotions expressed by the violin to that more of exuberance which is then ended by a instrument sounding like a very mild version of the harp(keyboard?). The second interlude is a mini adaptation of the last stanza sung by the singers using three different instruments...flute followed by the flute and that soft harp like instrument combo before the violin emoting the last part of the stanza. A typical IR orchestration in the second interlude with the difference being the usage of three instruments to emote the last stanza(charanam)...and a very soothing high pitched orchestration in the flute of the first interlude.

Tune - The tune is very soft on the ears and is perhaps described best by the singer's singing. I guess this might be a instance when the heroine is expressing herself in the bedroom before the hero. It is quite melodious and abit catchy at the same time when the singers sing Oh..unaalae. Uma ramanan should be given the honours for bringing out the expressions in the tune which is otherwise very soft. The basic instrumentation is a combo of the tabla,western drums and another broad instrument sounding like a rush of water dripping on a drum. The tune has similarities to a very famous song which i cant identify...in fact very close...if not for the orchestration i guess you can say it sounds exactly the same...anybody has any idea of that song? Interlude - The first interlude just ascends without stopping with the violins reaching a maximum before the flute gives us a pleasant village overtone with the folkish sounding tabla accompanying the flute before being succeeded by the usual IR pattern of violin movements expressing the search for romance. The second interlude starts off with the veenai starting off abit and then just going straight down like someone is just breezing through all the notes in a piano with the guitar mildy sounding in the gaps before the violins and flute give their versions of the tune before being ended by the chorus in typical IR fashion. Nice orchestration in the first interlude of the flute by IR..:clap:

Tune - A romantic melody with a carnatic overtone using hindustani styled instrumentation in places. If you take out the instrumentation you get the usual IR catchy romantic melody and if you add it in you get a carnatic song...interesting fusion by IR in this sense. The singing as usual is expressive and sweet on the ears without affecting the lyrics by Yesudoss and Janaki. The unique thing about this song is the instrumentation of the tabla and mridhangam...pleasant and catchy to listen. This time IR lets the singing and lyrics do the job with music being at a minimal...beautiful song though.

"Oru ragam paadalodu" is such a sweet, melancholic tune MohanaKalyani , perhaps . The prelude humming sounds distant and heartrending . Do we have such long lasting melodies in tfm anymore? Raja's flute , veenai combination in the interludes is a beauty . The second bgm has a shruthi or raga bedham if u notice the strings section and it adds to the poignancy. Raja is definitely the King of emotions

I've always thought that Janaki / KJY duets were very special, because for some reason, Janaki always sounds like she's very shy when she's singing with him. In her duets with SPB, she flirts like mad, but with KJY, it's on another level altogether. lol.

Uma Ramanan is one singer who has sung gems under Maestro's composition. Paattu Paadava is a classic album with all songs being of a different variety, be it today's pick or Poonkatrile or Chorus Paadura, or Vazhi Vidu.

I seem to observe the Counterpoint aspect in this song as well, especially in the charanams and the way they gel into the pallavi..even the lyrics seem to be so. May be I need baroque and hulks points here.

On example in terms of lyrics is below:

"Nillamal badhil sollamal ingey,

Sendraalum Vida mattene anbe"..

The singers made high pitch singing so easy in this song.

This song and the film has some unique points... the lady director didn't make films further I guess, the actress (Lavanya) didn't act further, Uma Ramanan didn't sing much, Rahman went into Oblivion and so on..

but the album was certainly Raja's best in 1995 and may be Chandralekha will come a close second.

Great selection Swathi!!! "Paattu paadavaa" is a fantastic album with every song being very fresh, unique and also melodious to the ears. "Nil nil nil" is particularly an intricate composition and have you listened to the prelude? It is something which Raja alone is capable of doing.
The scale is "Vasantha" , similar to "andhi mazhai"

Another nice pick by swathy...very nice to hear another catchy melody by IR..:clap:

Prelude - The guitar starts off the song on a melodious note before the electric veenai takes over playing the pallavi in a more meticulous format with the keyboard accompanying it here and there before being ended by the keyboard in a catchy percussion fashion. There is a hint of counterpoint being used here. The first piece played by the electric veenai is going high tempo while the second one is a slight milder deviation of the first piece with extra added ntoes depicting delight. I think this is a counterpoint as both these notes meet each other without affecting the flow and both go smoothly into each other.

Interludes - the keyboard plays in a racey single beat fashion before the electric veenai takes over again with a more emotive and slightly monotonous piece which contradicts the racey sounding keyboard. The violins then take over sounding soulful as playing sweetly into your hearts. I have to say that the first interlude is a contradiction to the actually happy tune of the song orchestrated brilliantly by IR. The second interlude starts off with the keyboard with a more racey single beat sounding like a horse galloping with the electric veenai sounding more delightful than the first interlude. There is another counterpoint here as the veenai sounds like it is asking questions while the violin just goes the other way round expressing emotions in a sad manner while the keyboard just plays like its racing with it sounding very mild before the violin ends the second interlude. The three pieces are totally different with each sounding differently but yet they compliment each other with not even one note sounding out of place. This is where IR is a master in implementing coutnerpoints in his songs.

Tune - The tune is the usual catchy IR melody with the pallavi and charanam impressing the listener immediately upon first hearing. The instrumentation of the song is even more catchier. The western percussion plays the first beat and the keyboard playing the second beat in a high octave before the first interlude. after the first interlude the pattern continues but with the keyboard playing the second beat in a slightly lower octave before the pattern resumes again with the high octave towards the end. The flute also comes in to compliment the more higher tempo singing of the lead pair soothingly in usual IR style.

Renault sir as for the lyrics i think because of the first part of the singing going high and the last word going very low it sounds like a counterpoint. It cant be really said to be a counterpoint as they are not two separate sounds or melodies but rather a high and low deviation of the stanza...counterpoint is when a melody or sound being played meets another totally different or contradicting melody or sound without the sounds affecting each other or as they say joining in a harmony. Maybe i might be wrong abt the lyrics part and experts can comment on this but from what i can listen it only seems to me as the stanza going from high to low without any difference in the melody. Yes but im not able to identify what they exactly are...the charanam is maintained at a high pitch when it is nil nil badhil sol sol and then descends slowly and smoothly in the last part. Perhaps experts can tell us what are the scales...:)

Prelude - The tabla sounds very catchy when the western drum gives a single beat after each tabla note and not to mention the comical and melodious fusion in the notes of the violin. The flute ends the prelude on a very soothing manner. Nice instrumentation by IR for the tabla and the orchestration of the violin.

Interlude - The flute just goes sweet like honey on your ears....it just plays like it is going to make you sleep and at the same time makes you enjoy its rhythm in the first interlude. The second interlude is longer with the violin taking over with a emotive rendition. In usual IR style it goes high tempo and then dissipates into a romantic like delight before the flute ends the interlude on a soft and contradicting manner. The second interlude starts off with a very mild and catchy version of the flute sounding like a butterfly fluttering...that adds to the melody effect. Nice orchestration by IR here..:clap:

Tune The catchy tabla and western drum combo plays through out the song with the sitara/guitar? coming in the end of the first part and second part of the charanams and pallavi to make it even more catchier. The tune is very soothing as expressed by engine sir...and the singing expresses the emotions of the lead pair like they are really into a romantic dillusion. Just watch Janaki's mild laugh and singing at the end and Vasudevan floats over like a evening breeze. At one part the tune is interrupted like its being done in a situation with the dialogues of janaki. The surprising part about this is that the rendition of those dialogues do not break the flow of the tune. Full marks to Janaki for that. :clap:

Interesting pick for the 50th song Swathy.

I normally don't listen to Malayalam songs.. but as destiny proved me wrong.. I litsened to the entire album and was mesmerised.

Raja went back to his native best and gave fresh songs. I would have loived these kind of songs in Tamil as well.

Today's pick comes in two versions (Yesudos and Chrita).. Chitra's part taking the edge though Yesudas voice was sweet as always.

Very Very nativitiy oriented song.. !!

Poo Kungama Poo although is a mallu song retains the village folk melody of the bygone IR era. The sweet flute notes in the interludes and the song letting the singers sing the tune is just reminiscent of the bharathiraja movies where such songs play. The tune is quite tamilianised especially when you hear chitra sing the lyrics. But still its been long sicne we heard Raja tune a village folk melody and this is one of them. Kudos to IR and Swathy :clap:

Thanks Swathy for permitting me to post today's pick. Maestro fans.. its time to have some breeze after the lull in this thread.

Today's pick is an awesome masterpiece and an excellent showcase of Counterpoint. Please do listen to the song prelude and you will understand what am talking about. It starts with a western instrument, not sure which one and then a beautiful violin starts to play as a counter melody to the first instrument.

The way the two instruments finish thi song prelude and lead into the male playback to start is wonderful. There will be a half a second pause after the instruments finish and Malaysia picks up... similar to the very brief time gap of silence before the crowd starts to applaud for a musician's orchestration performance.

I listened to this song last week and I was playing this prelude for umpteen times. Am sure we will have more discussions on this with Hulks and baroque the counterpoint specialist elaborating.

Other highlights of this song according to my observations:

1. Rare Malaysia Vasudevan - Kamal combo
2. Got subdued due to the masterpiece Thalattuthey Vaanam

I think the instrument is 'electric bass guitar'. This is basically a 'carnatic fusion' format (solo violin + bass rhythm) (especially in the interludes) that shows up well-developed in later years in Mohan songs of IR.
Most interesting as vijayr points out is the dancy twist (disco).

I am summarizing this song as below:
1. Maestro probably found KJY's ability to sing jolly kuthu songs as well.. today's pick will stand testimony alongside Aaagayam mele (Naan Vaazhaveppen) and Thanner Thotti (Sindu bhairavi).

2. Even for a kuthu song, maestro has given lot of effort to mix umpteen instrumental effects and make this song listenable many times.. this is evident from the first and second charanam interludes

3. Raja was in fine form in partnership with AVM, Rajini and SPM those days and hence even a jolly song sounds very much a chart topper.

4. Yet another song that took the sidlines due to intense competition from other songs in the same film (Unnai thaaney, Muthaduthey, Chittukku).

5. I saw this song on TV few months back and I found myself singing this song the whole day.. that's always been the effect of select Raja's songs on me. It makes my mind fresh all day.

First of all i m not in ilaiyaraja generation, i m rahman generation. but after hearing maestros songs, i addicted. i collected almost all raja songs. that is the power of his music. MSV songs didnt appeal me. Taste will differ. first understood that fact.

IMHO, raja songs has the appeal to reach the future generation also. ( i seen some school students singing "mantram vantha tenralukku". i stunned.). IR have more long life songs.

Give credit where it's due. IMNSHO Raja reigns supreme in this genre! He started with a bang in `machchAnappAththeengaLA' which eclipsed any prior themmAngu and went on to build 100's of them...polished or raw...smooth or rough...loud or gentle...nAttuppuRam or nagaram...powerful or soft...

I'm yet to see any number competing with `adiyE, manam nillunnA nikkAdhEdi' in raw power...kizhavanaiyum Ada vaikkum...

I am not here for a fight except that the wordings of Vasanth are too damaging as if there was no predecessor to such type of songs & only IR was the karta of this genre :lol:

Nakkeeran sir, too many songs .. but I will chose to comment on the latest.

Sandhana kaatre has the best combination of amazingly long prelude(may be 19 secs) and great counterpoint between Flute and Violin.

In my opinion this song is too much for a masala Rajinikanth movie. Rajini should be forever indebted to Raja for catapulting his films of those days into a different league just for songs.

One interesting aspect in this song is in the begining of the interlude before the second charanam...

Janaki will end as santhosha paatte va va and from then on the interlude tune will pick the same tune-tempo where Janaki leaves with the Va Va tune tempo... amazing creativity shown by Raja there. From then on counterpoint plays a mighty game in the interludes and that's a different story altogether.

I am planning to have portions of this song's prelude as a ringtone.

True ! continuing the end tune as an interlude was something new which was unheard of earlier ! Raja had all the freedom to experiment , I believe :D

As u mentioned the continuity, I was amazed by another Raja beauty & this time its from NOORAVADHU NAL - Mani vannan movie in which Mohan & Nalini celebrate their honeymoon

Listen to the second interlude after Janaki ( this time also S.Janaki ! ) completes ponnum minnum, violin takes over & Raja unleashes all his tricks :D

this was from the film thangamadi thangam.
ambika in a dual role with s.v.sekhar and direction by rama narayanan.
singers - p.suseela, malaysia vasudevan.
The film was released in the 80s and regularly found a place in ilangai vaanoli. It is a soothing themmangu.
The interlude is particularly melodious.
The film was the regular double act movie - refer vaani raani, enga veetu pillai. one of the twins is naive while the other is street smart. There was this scene about whipping the baddie ( i suppose this was pushpalatha).
This was one of the movies in which ambika played a double role. ( pei veedu and dhandanai are the others).
I would be thankful if anyone can send me this song or post the link.

I think this is once again a BR movie.. I remembering seeing this song once.. very bad picturisation.

Oara Oara is a nice begining to the song.

Raja gives a typical fisher-folk tune for this song and the lyics supports the same as well.

This film could well be remembered for this song alone and nothing else.

Rarely MV sang for Kamal . This movie had just 2 songs but both are special songs .
I believe IR & BR broke that taboo of being called as Gramathans through this movie.
While BR proved his critics wrong by taking a city based subject, IR proved his class by splendid BGM .

Raja rasigan,

It's heartening to see your enthusiaism in this thread. However it will be very good for this thread if we have a particular "Song of the day" discussed for at least 3 days for the following reasons:

1. It gives fellow hubbers time to visit this thread and contribute as well.

2. Lot of high quality masterpiece songs go unnoticed due to not much time given for hubbers to contribute.

Superb song Nakeeran - one of my alltime Nostalgic favorites ! When the film was released I was still in school and I used to listen frequently to the Film's radio program - while (supposedly) doing the homework !

Hi all,

was watching Vijay TV and a beautiful IR song from the 80's was played. It goes like 'Kaatre Sollu (or sellu?)' and was a Prabhu and Sulokchana starrer. The duet was sung by MV and another female can't figure. Any one knows what movie this is from? If possible could you also provide link if it is available on the net.
