"Ey Hairathe" is for sure the best! Alka Yanik did well with her recent "Saalam" (UJ) and once again with Hariharan she did a superbe job!
As expected "Tera Bina" kouda nala iruku, thanks to ARR's voice.
I thought "Barso Re" would be better, aarambam nala iruku, but pirahu konjam slow-aa pohuthu... ilaya?
"Mayya mayya"'s begining reminds me "nerupey chikimuki nerupey" from VV... It seems to be an item number but I think this is not the one with Mallika, look at this pic!
http://i.indiafm.com/img/feature/06/oct/guru1.jpg
It would fit more for "Baazi laga". by the way, intha song konjam kouda pidikala, it just don't sound like a Rahman's one! I won't blame him for that, cuz Mani probably want him to compose such a song to match the periode film!
"Jaage hain" is nice, it reminds me the song "Aazadi" from Bose- the forgotten hero, or an old patriotic song...., ARR's voice add so much emotions! :)
But as Vairamuthu said, "kavithaihalin suvai artham puriyum varai"! lol So let's hope we'll get Guru in tamil. As the name Guru is already used by an old Kamal film, we sould name Guru as "Thalaivan"...?

GURU will retain it's name in telugu. As for tamil, it might change since theres' already a "guru" registered.

i am not a hater of hj and yuvan all my post on hj would be after 20 days from the album release whenevr a album is out ppl like to see the initial review of it .. as u know a rahman album grows on u after each listening.. so whts the need in finding faults at the initial stage ... rahman once in a while recycles loops but give it a complete different feel
where hj and yuvan are almost repetitive in all their albums ... soo my point was reviews should make others listen not develop the hatred first... enna thambi dinesh ohk va

jus now heard the album...
"Jaage hain", "Ay Hayrathe" & "Tere Bina" are nothin short of masterpiece..."Ek Lo.." is not that bad as u ppl claim 2 be....other songs r not bad to hear the 1st time, I'm sure it'll grow on....the lyrics r bit hard to understand, not the typical bolly lyrics I guess.. probably Mani wanted to have a northish flavor in the songs to gel with the movie.
It'll be a big achievement for ARR-Mani if this album is critically acclaimed atleast, if not by the mass, for the fact that these 2 ppl from the south could explore the music of the North successfully,,hope the movie turns out to be good...
The song "Ek Lo.." is running now for the second time..guyz this song is cool ....I'm lovin it..hehe

Tere bina-wonderful melody, nice to hear tablasm from our master again after a long time, Chinmayi voice is magic, dham dhara dham sounded very tamil
Ay hairathe- simply awesome, pick of the album i'll say. HH-ARR combination never failed. Alka Yagnik voice has a slight resemblence of S.J

A decent album but Mani-ARR combo is not about giving decent albums. Their killer instinct is certainly missing.
ey hairathe, tera bina, Mayya, Jaage hain are my picks.
Ek lo muft - Pathetic.
Baazi Laga - A yuvan or Harris at their best would get this. Certainly out of place in a Rahman-Mani album.
I don't think this will kindle common listeners like RDB.

Maddy,
It's not a typical 70s song, tune has shades here and there but singing is quite Rahmanish. Honestly, i don't see great brainwork in that song.
The fact RDB didn't pick up early has to do with Rahman doing too many period films.
Now i wonder who will take the blame if Guru's music is a disaster? Mani, the script or ARR? I don't think ARR is outta form.

Baazi Laga is super. Even if bits from kunguma poove are used. The part from approximately 3:00 to 3:25 is super.
Mayya Mayya is even better! Typical Rahman way. The stuff that I expect from him. The body sways to Mayya Mayya's beats.
Tera Bina and Ay Hairathe are scintillating but too much sugar (read: melody) that it cloys the taste after a few listenings.
Ek Lo Ek Muft is a fun song with nice interludes. I won't yet come anywhere near Jaage Hain (I heard it once but it is for people too much into symphony and stuff).
Barso Re starting music immediately reminds the Thee pidikka number composed by Yuvan. There are other distrubing news that various other parts remind various other songs (see the ARRahmanfans group for more information).
Four awesome numbers, two good ones and comments deferred on one more. A nice album.
1) Mayya Mayya and Ay Hairathe
3) Baazi Laga and Tera Bina
5) Barso Re
6) Ek lo ek muft

I listened to the songs thrice.
My picks would be Tere Bina, Ay Hairathe and Jaage. I dont agree with Music4ever that these are cloyingly sweet or whatever. They dont tire me out with repeated listenings. Pretty good stuff from Rahman. HH sounds a bit like Bhupinder(of 70s ghazals fame did) in his song. I also liked how Rahman integrated the Dum dara dum part in that song. The strings-backed chords towards the end of Ay Hairathe when HH sings the opening lines for the final time is just goose pimple-inducing stuff.
Jaage hain is mesmerising and probably on par with previous themes Rahman has given us. I liked the contrast between the soft whispery vocals and the opera-like interludes. It warrants several more listens to figure out what Rahman has done there a bit more
On the other hand the gap between the best songs and the others in the album seems to be widening for Rahman as he is going a little to much into experimental mode. In SOK, from Munbe vaa/New York to Maaja/Maaricham it was quite a drop I thought.
Similarly the Baazilaga/Mayya songs didnt do much for me. We have heard similar stuff from Ofra Haza and other Arabic mixes CDs available in the audio shops. Wheres the Rahman touch?
Baazi laga is downright ordinary. This is Anu Malik stuff
I dont know if I have to listen to them some 15 times or what to let them grow on me. I dont know if I have that kind of patience.
But the top 3 are quite good.
I know Rahman-Mani have gone experimental post-millenium so I was kind of a little skeptical as to whether Guru would have any simple no-frills kind of song that would still impress. There is just not one but two of them here.

Oh and
Nanna re - although Rahman might not have thought of this song while composing the "nanna re nanna re" humming is quite simlar to "thaanaane thaanane thaanane thana na" humming by SJ from the song "paattu padaikkum kuyile"(from IR's kumbakkarai thangaiyyah". yes, the song does have strong deja vu moments.
Bolo Guru- situational, but didnt impress much musically

Jaage hain der tak - Had been awake till late
Hamein kuchh der sone do - Let me sleep some more time
Thodi si raat aur hai - Little night is left now
Subah to hone do - Let the dawn come
Adhe Adhure Khwaab - Those half fulfilled dreams
Jo pure na ho sake - That couldn't come true
Ek baar phir se neend mein - Once more in my sleep
Who khwaab bone do - Let me plant the greams again /* [ bona= to
plant, here it is used to live the dream again]
Simply Mindblowing!

Guru's soundtrack is typical Rahman
November 20, 2006 17:14 IST
In this reviewer's humble opinion, there is a fine line between having your own sound and being repetitive.
A R Rahman is one of the few music directors in Bollywood -- or for that matter anywhere -- who can tread that line with lan.
And the soundtrack of Guru -- Mani Ratnam's upcoming film which features a Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhavan, Mithun Chakraborty and Mallika Sherawat -- has A R Rahman written all over it in all caps.
As you listen through the soundtrack, you get the feeling that some songs you don't like too much might grow on you. And you also get the feeling that once you see the film, you might want to revisit the soundtrack.
Guru is generating buzz for a number of reasons. It is rumoured to be inspired by the villager to tycoon story of Dhirubhai Ambani. And the movie sees Rahman reunite with Ratnam, a duo that has given us memorable soundtracks like Roja.
The album of Guru kicks off with Barso Re, a peppy rain song sung by Shreya Ghosal and Uday Mazumdar. It is sparse, Rahman style, and injected with intelligent loops and percussion staccatos. But it does not tug at your heart-strings.
Which cannot be said about Tere Bina. This is Rahman at what he does best: ballads. The heart-warming song also bears testimony to the fact that the composer has evolved from a shy singer to a confident vocalist, never mind that his voice is not what most experts will go ga ga over. Tere Bina -- marked as a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan -- is one of the two best songs of Guru.
Next up is Ek Lo Ek Muft, a bhang number sung by none other than Bappi Lahiri. His accent almost disguised, Bappida seems to be enjoying the song, which sounds like a tribal chant at times. So-so, is the verdict. (Guess these ppl have listened to this song only once :bangcomp: )
Then comes Ms Sherawat's belly dance moment. Mayya, with its sensual sibilance and speaker-phone vocals, is very Middle Eastern. The singer's accent is a bit of a put off but I don't think anyone will be bothering about her accent with Ms Sherawat's accentuated curves hugging the screen.
Track number five is Ay Hairathe, sung nicely by Hariharan and Alka Yagnik. The smooth transition from what is almost a ghazal to a Scottish highland interlude and back demonstrates the composer's ease with both Western and Eastern music.
Up next is the techno-beat-meets-Udit Narayan's-voice offering called Baazi Laga. A tad pedestrian, but you never know with the right moves on screen.
The finale is the goose-flesh moment, undoubtedly the best song of the seven-number soundtrack, Jaage Hain. The orchestra rises and the strings swell to conjure up visions of a great beyond. A song full of cinematic promise.
The bottom line: If you want an album to play at a party, give Guru a miss. If you want to ponder over life's deeper questions and listen to music that tugs at your heart, buy it just for Tere Bina and Jaage Hain.
Rediff Rating: 3 star (Pretty Good )

Guru - Buy it for ‘Jaage Hain’ and ‘Tere Bina’
It goes without saying that AR Rahman is a supreme talent when it comes to music. Not only in India. But anywhere in the world. This year he excelled in Rang De Basanti where almost all the songs were fantastic. So, it goes without saying that his next offering with Mani Rathnam was eagerly anticipated. First of all, it’s important to understand that one approaches an AR Rahman album with a lot of expectations. You expect each song to be outstanding. In that context, Guru is a mixed bag. For it has splendid numbers like Tere Bina, Ae Hairathe Aashiqui and Jaage Hain (This being an amazing experience). Barso Re is good while Ek Lo Ek Muft, Mayya and Baazi Laga are a bit of a disappointment. Yes, it’s hundred percent worth-a-buy for it has some brilliant gems with fabulous lyrics by Gulzar. But as an album, it’s not completely satisfying.
In Shreya Ghoshal, AR makes a perfect choice of singers for a crafty song like Barso Re. For it’s a pleasure noticing those twists-n-turns in the Shrutiyan (sub notes within notes) that she strikes with an effortless ease. Add the spirit of an eighteen year old, and the song bubbles with nascent chirpiness. The song starts with the strumming of a string instrument colluding with a mischievous flute strain and then a traditional rhythm picks up the tempo invoking the rain gods to let loose their gates of outpouring. It’s a good song that evokes visual images in your mind but somehow, it is not Rahman at his best. Somehow one expects nothing short of brilliance each time he has baton in his hands.
Tere Bina is vintage AR at his best. The moment this spirited song starts, you get surprised with its sheer novelty value. Moreover, you also get to hear an inspired Rahman letting you have a sneak peek inside his golden spirit. There’s the unmistakable triumph of an at-ease tabla theka taking things forward as if moving ahead on a camel ride through a charmingly cool desert evening. There’s a sufiyana element in the song reminding you of the spirit of Dumadum Mast Qalandar. The additional vocals of Chinmayee, Murtaza and Qadir inject a haunting feel while AR’s playing-around-with-sargam in the middle has a magical effect. Fabulous string arrangements coupled with guitar (Sounding like a sitar) strains makes Tere Bina a fantastically produced song that moves you effortlessly.
Ek Lo Ek Muft is a song which may make more sense with the picturisation. For, listening to Bappi Lahri trying to infuse life in this theatrical number doesn’t sound good. It’s the kind of song which is usually part of village revelries after a hard day under the big banyan tree. Raw rhythm emanates out of what can be a dugdugi or a nagada with manjeera sounding like ghungroo. And then the additional vocals of Tanvi, Saloni, Boney and Jaidev create strange kinds of sounds that are far from entertaining. Even the normally reliable Chitra is unable to instill life in this song. I can’t listen to it again and again.
Mayya has a middle-eastern flavour with Mayya Toller singing in an unconventional manner whereas Chinmayee and Keerthi shadow her. It’s a song that once again will sound better with the visuals. For, it’s a number that functions on the level of subconsciousness. I don’t think I like Mayya’s singing style. It’s a bit too experimental. But come to know that this song is an item song picturised on Mallika Sherawat, things spice up in the mind. Temporarily. I like serious music with thought provoking lyrics but the chaos in Mayya fails on both the fronts. The rhythm designing is jarring and the electronic wind instrument that sounds now and then doesn’t make sense. Mayya is a disappointment.
Ae Hairathe Aashiqui starts with the refrain from Tere Bina in AR’s voice and extremely-pleasing simple tabla taal which is soothing to the ears. You feel like moving your head and tapping your feet as the orchestration graduates to harmonica, accordion, a steady bass line and a neatly arranged strings line adds more energy. It’s good to experiment with new voices but when you hear champion voices of Hariharan and Alka Yagnik your heart swerves in delight. Gulzar’s lyrics is another highpoint…:Kyon Urdu Faarsi Bolte Ho, Das Kehte Ho Do Tolte Ho, Jhooton Ke Shehenshah Bolo Na, Kabhi Jhaankhon Meri Aankhen Sunaaye, Ek Daastaan Jo Honton Se Kholna. Ae Hairathe Aashiqui is easily one of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time in terms of lyrics, great singing vocals and mind-blowing composition. Play on…
Baazi Laga once again is not your typical A R Rahman number. It’s a song that talks about the tempestuous money and the efforts one takes the entire life to take the journey forward. Udit Narayan sings spiritedly. And so does Madhushree, Swetha and Bhargavee. The carnival rhythm, playful piano, enthusiastic chorus vocals with smartly woven lyrics invoke the people of the world to keep making money for that’s what makes life go forward. Once again, this song will sound better with visuals. For when you listen to it in isolation, it fails to make you feel like pressing that rewind button. Another disappointment is what I can say.
Save the best for the last. That’s what seems to be AR’s mantra. For Jaage Hain makes you sit up and tune into this fabulous composition. This is what you expect when you buy a Rahman album. Chitra whispers Gulzar’s gems with little or no music in the background. The magic of goose-pimple-raising music score. As the sea of strings flows unabated your mind is filled with the tremulous thoughts of uncertainty. What next! Music stops again…Rahman whispers pleading that he has been awake the whole night, at least let him make the most of whatever is left of the night. The orchestra steps up the tempo suddenly along with AR’s high pitched variation as if the giant sea has given way for the angels to walk their way towards you on the pavement of water. What can I say except that I can feel the onset of tears welling in the bowls of my eyes. Jaage Hain finds Rehman raising himself beyond the fringes of spirituality and superlative brilliance. An energizing experience.

[tscii:22393a1849]Making music with the ‘Gurus’
Director Mani Ratnam credits composer A R Rahman and lyricist Gulzar for the
unique score of
his film
On A R Rahman
“Both of us are willing to experiment. The music of ‘Guru’ is very different
from what we have
earlier done. Rahman is someone who is willing to think laterally, who does not
have to be in
the same grain as the film. He is very good at making a counter point.”
Gelling with ‘Guru’
“The film spans over 30 years between the ‘50s-’80s. We wanted the music to be
an
interpretation with a certain amount of modernity. We wanted it to evoke the era
not recreate
it. Sometimes you pick a song composed as a lullaby and convert it into a dance
number. Rahman
can do this very well. He tried to push in a tangent and get something fresh.”
‘Mayya Mayya’ and Mallika
This song (filmed on Mallika Sherawat) celebrates freedom. It is set in
Istanbul, Turkey. It
has a Middle Eastern sound and a belly dance to it. The architecture, the way
cinematographer
Rajiv (Menon) lit the place and the way it has been choreographed, gives you
that buzz of the
early ‘50s in an exotic land. It has been sung by a Canadian singer.”
Growing with Gulzar
“After ‘Dil Se’ we have come together for ‘Guru’. It’s a huge advantage to work
with him
because he is also a writer, lyricist and a filmmaker. When I tell him that I
don’t want the
lyrics to be literal to the situation, rather I’d want them to have a poetic
layer to it, he
loves it. It’s good for him that I don’t know Hindi well. He’s relieved that
nobody is poking
his nose in every word that he writes! He never gives up, never settles, and
never tries to
please anybody.”

He has got the voice and the talent to count among all time legends, but along the way, he didnt get that many oppurtunities. Ay Hairathey is a song that has to be sung by someone special, and hariharan does really well with this song. Once again, ARR hits the bulls eye with his voice selection

It is probably not good to force one's PoV but I should thank Rahman for providing us with two ROCKING numbers in "Mayya Mayya" and "Baazi Laga". Contrary to some opinions expressed here and elsewhere, although they may have some merit, I believe there is plenty of "Rahman influence" in these two numbers. Thank God that ARR included such numbers, otherwise IMO, the album wouldn't be complete. I have been hering non-stop these two numbers. Raw music. Enjoyable. Immensely.
Some review said that Ek Lo Ek Muft had South Indian musical influence. It is funny that the some parts of Barso Re is as South Indian as it can get (the Kunguma poove part, for instance) but the reviewer had no clue of it.

Jaage Hain is a great theme number, and evokes a myriad of emotions. Peace, Excitement, Pathos... the composition with its rich orchestration just grows on you.
The tune seems to have been inspired from the old Hindi film classic by Lata Mangeshkar, "Lag Jaa Gale Ke Phir Ye Haseen Raat Ho Na Ho...."
Anyone noticed this?

[tscii:73c9bd105c]Heard Guru for the last n days, where (n = release date – today), decided to write a review. Since I don’t proclaim myself as a writer, I believe the shortcomings would be promptly forgiven.
I could give the review the title:
Guru – Rahman turns the heat back to Mani
Before I want to venture into the positives, let me outline the cons.
• This album is not immortal like several of Mani-ARR or Mani – IR albums
• The album will fade into oblivion once the movie completes 50 days (?), quite unlike Mani-ARR combinations.
• For the first time in his illustrious career, Mani has situational songs. Now I don’t know if that’s a bad thing altogether. Usually you can treat any of Mani’s movies as private albums; they don’t need visuals to sound good.
• Surprisingly there is no experimentation in this album. All the songs are either typical Rahman or have a sense of déjà vu.
Now to the review,
First and foremost, this album should come as a shocker to the folks who tore apart Rahman as a mere album composer. I guess we can lay that accusation to rest now. Rahman has proved he is only as good as the director wants him to be. In other words, if you cannot get the best out of Rahman, please don’t waste his time.
Baazi Laga:
I guess Mani must have been smiling then at the output of the song. Rahman makes his work a little easier with packaging. From one of the stills I saw a couple of weeks back, trust me nobody is going to blink an eyelid during the song. Song-wise this is no great shakes but good enough to hold you attention and on repeated hearings it is very catchy. Alga is in form so is Udit. Again Mani’s task cut out.
Barso Re:
The only disappointment in the album sans any freshness whatsoever. The ‘nan nare’ part is the only USP to the album. It will certainly appeal to the teeny north crowd. Probably the introduction song of Ash, but then introduction songs are always difficult unless it is Rajnikanth. The mundane charanams doesn’t help the attention span either. The packaging is the only saving grace, but then we have Mani. Definitely uphill task but then you have Mani,Ash,Rains,’Nan Nare’. Let us see how it fares.
Ek lo Ek Muft
Great song. This one is gonna rock the theatres. A very funny but instantly catchy song. You can see traces of vintage Rahman. This song is reminiscent of some parts of “Thirupachi Aruvale”. Mani shouldn’t have any problem picturising this one. A winner all the way.
Ey harithey
Well this one is for melody lovers. ‘Dum dere Dum dere’ will sway the listeners no matter what. Certainly a well composed song, wouldn’t go far to call it a ghazal. Hari is in his elements with Alka. The good part is that this song doesn’t need the visuals to sound good. The sad is part is that there are two melodies and one of them will be utilized for smoke break. One for the ages!
Jaage Hain
The best song of the album. Very clearly written, amazingly composed for the situation. Since it will be a part of the narration it will be an endearing experience to watch. Traces of Bombay Dreams sprayed around. The orchestra should elevate the feeling when watching it in DTS. You can take a bow Rahman.
Tera Bina
Great Song. Even if the song fails ‘Dum dere Dum dere’ isn’t going to fail. I am a fan of Rahman’s singing. He gives you the required feel like IR. But as several others pointed out, I think he should have skipped this one. The words weren’t simple enough for him to have ago at it. Also shocking is the Mani has chosen a similar setting like ‘Kannalane (aka Vani Mahal in Madurai) to picturize this song sans any newness. It will require a humongous effort from Ash to keep this lively. Another one for the ages!
Mayya Mayya
Rahman’s sudden embrace of Persian songs continue in this one as well. Since Mallika is gonna be introduced in this one. You can rest assured that the theatre is going to hooked. But song wise this is a let down. It depends on packaging rather than composition itself.
In my many trips to Middle East and switching across any channel, you get a host of Arabic/Persian Songs. I would certainly never call this an experimental effort from Rahman. There is a vast sea of such songs on the east of India. This song will fade as soon as the movie completes its run.
So as I said , Rahman as done his job. He has put the pressure back to Mani. Usually Mani doesn’t have too much of that because his songs are hit no matter what. This time the success largely depends on how he’s gonna capture them on screen.
So does Rahman satisfy his part?
A BIG TRIUMPHANT ---- YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
Welcome back RAHMAN!!!

I had the same thought. You get these "desert Mix" kind of CDs with Arabian music(Khalid, Ofra Haza and stuff like that) and there are several songs like this . Usually Rahman adds his own touch to these genres, giving it an Indian-ness, which is missing in this song.
Bolo Guru and Baazi laga would have to be saved by Mani.
BTW, I dont think this is the first time Mani has gone for situational songs. Kannaththil muththamittal(exept for deivam thandha poove/veLLai pookkaL) had mostly situational songs which wouldnt click as standalones. That sinhalese song, that MSV song and one more I dont remember.
Ayudha ezhuthu was to a certain extent situational too, but was a successful standalone as well.

Why must every bad song be saved by Mani? Even the "Master" himself screwed up with song picturizations (Dhol Dhol & Baadal from Yuva were "fillers" and badly picturized.)
Both have them have contributed their BEST efforts to the movie and I'm sure it's visually appealing (Just look at Tere Bina's promo. It's lavashing!)
If anything, I hope Mani worked his magic on "Ek Lo Ek Muft." It's more situational next to Jaage hain.

Yep, the accordion usage in Hairathe is pretty darn good. This is my pick of the album and it remains so even after several listens :-)
In Tere Bina- Chinmayee sounds like one of those Pakistani/Persian singers we had in the 80s in HFM. Was it Salma Agha? (who sang "lambi judaai" from Hero) Thats who her voice reminds me of. Good choice for this song.

Mani to dub `Guru` in Tamil!
By Moviebuzz | Friday, 24 November , 2006, 11:29
Mani Ratnam has decided to dub his magnum opus Guru in Tamil. Now Abhishek Bachchan, Mithun Chakravarthy, Aishwarya Rai, Vidya Balan and Mallika Sherawat will speak in Tamil! Madhavan is also doing a cameo role in the film.
The Hindi version of Guru which was slated for release on Dec 22 is now postponed to January 12, 2007. So Guru in Tamil, will release simultaneously with its original Hindi version as a Pongal special.
There is a lot of buzz around the film as it is based on the life and times of Dhirubhai Ambani and his rise to power as one of the richest man in the country. The songs by A.R.Rahman have already become a hit.
As far as Tamil dubbing goes Aishwarya Rai has a market here. In Guru there is wedding scene of Abhishek and Ash shot at a Madurai temple which is drawing a lot of curiosity. The couple are said to be real life lovers and astrologers are predicting that they will get married soon.
So is Mani trying to cash in on the romance and make more money for his Madras Talkies?

http://www.indiafm.com/features/2006/11/24/1871/index.html
Positives
There is good news for Ratnam, Rahman, Abhi and Ash fans as 'Guru' finds a place in Top-3 within a week of the release. Also notable is the fact that the album's promotion has barely begun and it is the entire cast and crew setup that has actually enabled such heartening sales in no time. The music is a good mix of different genre of songs and if the film clicks, it would only enjoy continued sales for weeks
Negatives
A couple of (situational) songs are not much impressive and may only do well if integrated seamlessly with the flow of the film!

Totaly irritating!!! Hope Mani won't read this line!
He's not the kind of tamil producers who are flooding telugu cine industry by dubing nonsense movies just to reduce the losses!
As far as Tamil dubbing goes Aishwarya Rai has a market here.

Madhavan on GURU
Madhavan plays a journalist for the first time in Mani Rathnam's ready-for-release Guru. Says Maddy, "I've always been on the other side of the firing line. Now I know how it feels to be asking the questions." Reliving the experience of shooting with his mentor Maddy says, "Guru is going to be no ordinary film. Trust me; I've worked thrice with Mani before, including the Tamil versions of Saathiya and Yuva. Never have I seen him so charged. Mani wanted to go into the various time passages in Guru chronologically. He waited for all our dates, and then did it in one go."
Any regrets about not being the central character in his mentor's film? "None at all. I've no qualms in doing anything Mani asks me to. He's my guru. And when my guru asked me to be in Guru there was no question of questioning him. Nobody questions Mani."
Maddy is happy to have worked with Abhishek. "He's one actor who's a friend first. It is very difficult to make friends with your colleagues. Somewhere the sense of competitiveness comes in. Not with Abhishek. I always wish I could do Hindi versions of my Tamil films. But when Abhishek did Run and Yuva, I was the happiest. If Mani's Yuva took Abhishek two steps forward, Guru will take him ten steps."
Interestingly Madhavan shot for Rituparno Ghosh's Sunglass back-to-back with Guru. "Though it was my first time with Ritu it felt like we had worked together many times. If in Guru I have Abhishek for company in Sunglass, I've Jayaji. People tend to notice how strong his mom's influence is on Abhishek's personality, specially the eyes and smile."
After completing his work in Guru and Rituparno Ghosh's Sunglass Madhavan is now in Malaysia for a week-long vacation with his wife Sarita and son Vedant.
"Actually," Maddy confesses seriously , "My parents advised me to go alone. Taking my son along is as good as kissing my vacation goodbye. To say he's a handful would be an understatement. He's barely 1, and he turns on my laptop and plays the music. He seems to be a gizmo expert from now only. He makes us run around his little finger. The only one not in his control is our parrot Ashley. Ashley hates Vedant for stealing away the attention. Even I feel the same way every time I see my wife and son together."

Guru will be extraordinary - reporter Maddy reveals
Nov 27, 2006
Madhavan has all the reasons to feel happy and contented. He has just now completed a prestigious project Guru with Mani Ratnam and Sunglass with Rituparno Ghosh. Secondly he has taken time off from his busy schedule for a vacation with his family at Malaysia.
When questioned about Guru and Mani Ratnam, he was too forthcoming with his thoughts. In Guru, for the first time in his film career, he plays the role of a journalist. He found it very exciting to be on the other side of the microphone. He sings oodles of praises on his mentor Mani Ratnam. According to him, Guru has come out very well and Mani Ratnam has not neglected even the minutest of details.
He patiently waited for the dates of all the leading stars and then completed the film. When asked if Maddy knew the type of role that he was going to play in the film before signing, he replied in negative. When it comes to Mani, no questions asked. On his co-star Abhishek’s performance, Maddy reveals that Guru is sure to reveal a different shade of Abhishek to the world.
Currently, he is holidaying at Malaysia with his wife Sarita and son Vedanth. Maddy’s eyes sparkle at the very mention of his son’s name. “Vedanth has completely changed our life. Now all our moves and plans are centered around him. Though my parents wanted us to go to Malaysia without him, we did not want to. After all he is an integral part in our life”, says the proud father. “Of course, Malaysia is not turning out to be a vacation for us as we are constantly on our toes with Vedanth. My parrot Ashley is green with envy as Vedanth receives all our attention. In fact I feel the same way whenever I see my wife with my son.” Maddy chuckles.

[tscii:a58209cd33]Guru audio rocks!
November 24, 2006
A.R. Rahman creates magic yet again.
Mani Ratnam has evoked some of the maestro Rahman’s best musical works in his films and Guru, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R. Madhavan and Vidya Balan, is no exception. The audio of Guru, owned and released by Sony-BMG, has been out in stores since November 18, and the music is simply superb.
Like all of ARR’s works, this one too takes more than one listen to grow on you, but when you do, you just can’t stop listening!
Keeping with the flow of the film, which is said to be the dramatisation of Reliance’s late boss Dhirubhai Ambani’s biography, Guru alternates between flowing melodies and period foot-tapping and mischievous beats.

[tscii:bbd9e2a862]ARR says his voice was NOT the right choice for "Tere Bina"
http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1066897
AR Rahman started his career with filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The duo is back together again with ‘Guru’. Rahman says, “There is anticipation, both good and bad. Mani and I think alike as far as music goes. That’s how I ended up giving music to ‘Guru’. We were done with composing most of the songs even before he started shooting.”
Rahman has used Bappi Lahiri’s voice for the first time. “We were wondering whom to get to sing ‘Bolo Guru’ and then Gulzar suggested Bappida’s name. We were not sure if his voice would suit Abhishek. However, once we tried him, we liked the results.”
Interestingly, Rahman thinks another song that he himself has sung doesn’t suit Abhishek at all.
He says, “Every time I sing, I feel my voice doesn’t suit the actor. Earlier I had such apprehensions when I sang for Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Dil Se’. I had similar apprehensions while singing for Abhishek. Even after watching the song 20-30 times, I am still to be convinced. In fact, first time I watched it, it almost spooked me. Hope the audience doesn’t agree with me!”[/tscii:bbd9e2a862]

A R Rahman, Manirathnam do it again for Guru
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, November 30, 2006]
When A R Rahman and Manirathnam combine, they simply break all records in audio sales.
Ever since Roja, the two had come together on several occasions. All their songs have topped the audio charts and the cassettes always made roaring sales. They have re-created their magic again in Guru.
The Hindi movie starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai has musical score by Rahman. The audio was out a couple of weeks ago. It has now emerged as a hot cake in the Chennai audio market.
The album has seven songs and Rahman has shown his mastery by coming up with a variety of genres.
Popular music composer Bappi Lahiri has sung a song besides Hariharan, Shreya Ghosal, Alka Yagnik, Chinmayee, Chitra and of course Rahman himself.
Now Guru maybe dubbed in Tamil and so the songs will also be out in Tamil.

Rahman – whose magic always seems to work with mentor Maniratnam – is happy at the general outcome the album is generating among the public and fans. However, he is not all that happy to sing for Abhishek. Nothing personal though, he states that he feels his voice is not in sync with Abhi baby.
I have this constant paranoia every time I sing for an actor. I always tend to feel that the song will go haywire if my voice does not suit the actor.
I had the same feeling for Dil Se. I had tough times convincing myself to sing for Abhishek and I am not sure that I am convinced by the results yet, confides Rahman. In fact I had an eerie feeling when I watched the song being enacted by Abhishek onscreen, he adds on.
Rahman has also used Bappi Lahri – whose name was suggested by lyricist Gulzar – for Guru’s audio track. He is all praises for Bappi and states that Bappi’s voice is a perfect match for Abhishek Bachan.
My wavelength matches with Mani when it comes to music. That is how I decided to take up Guru and we started scoring for the movie even before the shoots were commenced, states Rahman.

[tscii:a75f9e0852]Rahman’s ‘Jaage Hain’; Guru’s delight
IndiaGlitz
A R Rahman has done it again. His superlative brilliance in the soundtrack of ‘Guru’ is a revelation for the music lovers. Be it ‘Barso Re’ where Aishwarya is dancing like a dream under the canopy of blue sky, ‘Ae Hairathe Aashiqui’ or ‘Tere Bina’ Rahman gems are a collector’s delight. But the song that leaves you speechless has to be ‘Jaage Hain’. For it’s not merely a song but a state of mind. A stream of sub-consciousness that flows unabated invoking the spiritual side of your personality that stays dormant.
Chitra starts off the proceedings in a slow sedate manner as her vocals unleash the magic with little or no accompaniment in the background. AR joins her in the whispering mode pleading for some sleep for he has remained awake for most part of the night anyways. And then he shifts gears magnificently and touches the highest contours of magnificence. There are layers of meanings in this song. It’s about human life where happiness is a brief episode in the general drama of pain. ‘Jaage Hain’ is one song that catapults Rahman to the level of greatest maestros or artistes who delivered much more than mere entertainment through their art.
Rahman magic flows like an impassioned river determined to embrace the sea of timelessness.

Googled it. Nice find.
I also remembered in the news that there's a rumor that Ash-Abhi tied the knot in Madurai temple. Could that mean that the scene follows before or after the marriage?
The pieces of the puzzle are now getting put together..
Also, I believe S.Bharathi, tamil actor will be making his debut in this film.

Dec 05, 2006
Rahman – Maniratnam combination has worked wonders yet again in the audio market. Maniratnam’s Guru audio, which was released a little while ago, is being received with wide-open arms. Songs of the album have already begun topping the charts. Seems like Rahman’s proportionate blend of period and contemporary music is grabbing enough and more attention among the music lovers.
Guru
Rahman has devoted the Tere Bina song in the album to music maestro Naushad Ali. Earlier, Rahman worked with Naushad for his Vande Mataram album and it is learnt that to express his gratitude for the veteran Rahman dedicated the song to the maestro. Guru will simultaneously be released in Tamil as well and Vairamuthu has penned lyrics for the 7 songs in his unique Tamil. The audio sales are expected to soar in Tamil Nadu after the release of Tamil Guru.
Music World representatives confirmed that Mani – Rahman combination has made the audience head over heels for Guru’s music and the record sales are expected to rise when the songs catch up among the audience. While reflecting the same thoughts, sales professional from Connexions added that the movie’s release would play a pivotal role in boosting the record sales.

Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, December 05, 2006]
It seems Kareena Kapoor will have to wait a while before she can start work on her dream project, ‘ Lajjo’. Directed by Mani Rathnam, she would be paired with perfectionist Aamir Khan for the first time. This much anticipated film was supposed to start this December or January, 2007, but with Aamir planning to kick start the remake of Tamil hit ‘Ghajini’ under his own home production in January, it seems ‘Lajjo’ will have to wait till August, 2007 to finally start.
For the meanwhile Kareena is basking in the glory of boyfriend Shahid Kapoor’s first super hit ‘Vivah’. No, she is not in a hurry to sign new films. And no, she isn’t bothered about her pairing with one time lover Hrithik Roshan in Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut. As of now Kareena is listening to new scripts and is determined to do quality work. Seems Aamir Khan effect is catching up big time in Bollywood. [/tscii:30c1686999]

Exclusive! A R Rahman on SRK, Guru and music
On working with Shah Rukh Khan
I decided not to compose the music for his film, Om Shanti Om because I was refused the publishing rights of the film. But we could surely work in future. There should be no hard feelings in this business. Shah Rukh is warm-hearted and a smart producer but he was misled in this case.
The concept of music publishing is new in India and his advisors did not understand what it meant. They made him a bakra with their wrong advice.
As a composer, it is important for me to own some rights to the music, so that I could use it any way I want 20 years from now. For me, owning these rights is more important than owning property. Anything can happen to property but music rights will not collapse.
This is not an uncommon thing in the West. But in India, some producers have begun understanding the concept. Aamir Khan is giving me the music publishing rights to his next film. Rajnikant's daughter, who is producing a Tamil film called Hara, is going to do it too.
On his own label
I want to publish not only my non-film compositions but also the songs of legends like Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan saab. So many singers, including Sonu Nigam, have learned from him. He is my guru too. There are so many gems of his that are unpublished. Even people who are acquainted with Hindustani music are not aware of this music. I want to do it. There is no commercial consideration in this venture. Over the years, I have composed music for films that are not big in the traditional way. Films like MF Husain's Meenaxi or Shyam Benegal's films.
On Bappi Lahiri singing the song Ek Lo Ek Muft in Guru
The tune for this song had been ready more than three months ago and I wanted Abhishek Bachchan to sing it. But he was abroad and by the time he would return to India, I was going abroad. So there was a dilemma. I felt it was a special song and wanted it to sound fresh.
Just then, I happened to watch some award function on television, and there was Bappida singing a song and getting a lot of applause. I contacted him in Kolkata the next day, and he was in Chennai in a day or two.
It is amazing that he could record the entire song, which is quite wordy and long, in less than two hours and then he went back to Kolkata. The song has been picturised very well on Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai. It is going to be even more popular after the film's release.
On singers Chinmayee, Shreya Ghoshal and Madhushree
Chinmayee sang a beautiful song for me in another Mani Ratnam film, Kannathil Muthamittal, called Deiva Tande Poove. It became very popular. She has won many awards in Tamil Nadu including state awards. I was surprised to see how she could change her voice for this film (She joins Rahman in Tere Bina, one of the most haunting numbers in Guru). There is more strength in her voice than I had thought and it is huskier too. I love singers who are capable of surprising the composers.
When I first heard Shreya a few years ago, I liked her voice but I thought it was a bit shrill. Now, it is full bodied. Apart from singing Barso Re in Guru, she has also sung other numbers for me, like in the Tamil film Jillunu Oru Kathal. The music became very popular and the film did well in cities.
As for Madhushree, she is growing in strength from film to film. She is one of those few singers who are capable of taking a good composition to the next level and make a big difference.
On the Mayya Mayya number
I was on hajj and I heard a man saying mayya, mayya, mayya. I heard music at once. Later, I realised he was selling water and saying the word in Arabic. So I told myself that one day I would record a song mixing Arabic, Turkish and Indian music. That is how the song was born.
The singer Maryem Toller lives in Toronto and sings in a band. I think she is from Yemen. I was working there last year on the stage musical The Lord of the Rings, and got her to record her part of the song there. I added music to it in Chennai.
Maryem's voice is also heard at the start of Rang De Basanti.

When Mani Ratnam blackmailed Rahman
In the first part of an exclusive interview with A R Rahman, the maestro spoke about how Shah Rukh Khan was made a 'bakra,' and how he made Bappi Lahiri sing in Guru.
In the second and last part, Rahman talks more about Mani Ratnam's Guru, and his other projects.
On dedicating the song Tere Bina to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
When I began working on the soundtrack of Guru, I happened to listen to one of Nusrat saab's softest songs called Sajna Tera Bina. It is simple and heart stirring. There is great beauty in it. I was inspired by it and started composing Tere Bina about eight months ago.
Originally, the song was about 25 minutes long. You know I often write six or seven mukhdas and then there are many variations. I also recorded the song Ay Hairathe for the film but Mani sir felt it was too heavy to be at the start of the film. He thought of using Tere Bina.
Suddenly, the song got a life of its own. But there was one hurdle (chuckles). I had recorded it in the voice of Qadir Khan and he did an excellent job. But Mani sir wanted me to sing it. I said, Qadir will get hurt, and I did not want to hurt him. But there was no way of getting out. It became something like: Either you sing it or it won't be there.
So it was a blackmail?
But in a good way (chuckles). I also told Mani sir that I was fasting then and didn't have the energy to sing it. He said he would wait. (The song as it is has some of Murtaza Khan and Qadir's voices in the Dham Dara Dham Dara part at the beginning. Chinmayee joins Rahman later in the song.)
On Aye Hairathe
I was listening to the music of Amir Khusroo and his song Yeh Sharbati Ashiqui. I loved it. But most of the song was in Persian and that was going to cause us a problem. So Gulzar saab wrote the lyrics inspired by Amir Khusroo. I would say it is one of the best songs that have come out with my association with Gulzar.
On making Hariharan sing in Aye Hairathe
It was very important that he sang the song. It is the kind of song Mohammad Rafi would have sung four or five decades ago. It is a traditional kind of melody with lots of feelings but Hariharan makes it sound modern. He has done an astounding job. The song has a lot of masti in it. You feel it especially when Alka (Yagnik) joins in. It is a romantic and fun song. It is the most popular song in the album after Tere Bina.
I am surprised universally people are going to listen to Tere Bina after listening to all songs in the album. Such a thing (like most people returning to one song) does not happen often.
When Deepa Mehta's Water became controversial, you quit the project but your songs were retained. Now, Deepa wants you to compose the songs for her period drama The Exclusion.
I know Deepa has said that she would be very disappointed if I don't compose music for her new film. We have always retained the friendship and she showed me Water even before it opened the Toronto International Film Festival last year.
I don't know when she will start work on The Exclusion. If my schedule fits hers, I would love to work with her. We were in Los Angeles the other day attending the same event but there was no opportunity to discuss anything because I was flying to London the same night.
Other projects
I have done some work on The Golden Age, the follow up to Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth. I am working along with another composer. This is new for me in films but I am excited about it. I think the film will cost more than his Elizabeth (which cost about $35 million, eight years ago). It could even cost $100 million.
I have also recorded couple of songs for Ashutosh Gowariker's Akbar-Jodha but it is premature to talk about them. Things change. But this much I know, the songs and the score should not only reflect the grandeur of the age but also the romance between the central characters (played by Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai).
And now that The Lord of the Rings is getting ready to open in London, there is plenty of work.

The history behind Guru’s Tere Bina
The song that is rocking the charts right now, Tere Bina from Guru in Rahman’s voice does have a history behind its success. Rahman – in a recent interview revealed that the song was sung by Qadir Khan. As reported by us earlier, the song in the album was dedicated to music maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The soulful song, which was, originally of 25 minutes in the voice of Nusrat was cut short into less than 5 minutes for inclusion in Guru.
Qadir Khan recreated the voice of Nusrat in the song, which was recorded for Guru originally. On the other hand Maniratnam had another wish – in other words, command. Mani insisted Rahman to voice Tere Bina, which was immediately turned down by Rahman stating that he would insult Qadir Khan since Qadir has done an excellent job himself in that song. Besides, Rahman was fasting during Ramadan period and doubted that he had enough energy to sing the high pitch number.
However, Mani remained undaunted on all those hurdles and did not take no for an answer. Finally, Rahman gave in and rendered his voice for Tere Bina. The song also has Murtaza and Qadir Khan’s voices in the midst. Tamil singer Chinmayi is a part of Tere Bina too.

[tscii:597c015016]Suriya to dub for Guru
IndiaGlitz [Monday, December 11, 2006]
Suriya and Manirathnam share a good rapport.
Suriya was introduced to cinema by Manirathnam's Madras Talkies through Nerukku Naer. It was Manirathnam’s Aayitha Ezhuthu which propelled Suriya to stardom.
As a token of gratitude, Suriya has agreed to dub for Manirathnam’s Guru in Tamil.
Suriya will lend his voice for Abhishek Bachchan in the Tamil dubbing version of the movie which also stars Aishwarya Rai, Madhavan and Bipasha Basu.
Rahman has scored music for the movie. Vairamuthu is penning the lyrics in Tamil.
Amidst his busy schedule, Suriya has decided to allot time to dub for Guru. It may be recalled that in the past, Madhavan and Aravindswamy have dubbed for other actors in Manirathnam’s movies.
Suriya is currently acting in Varanam Aayiram which is directed by Gowtham Menon. He would then act in a movie to be directed by Hari.
An eternal gentleman is Suriya.

Surya has got a cute & soft voice but it won't fit Abhishek Bachchan playing a leader. I remember in Ayudha Eluthu Surya's voice wasn't good for the speech in the village. Too soft.

Wow. So Arvindswamy dubbed for SRK? Then who did Maddy dub for?
The article clearly states that " in the past, ArvindSwamy and Madhavan have lent their voices...or something like that
So if Swamy did for SRK, who did Maddy dub for? I'm curious.

Maybe Maddy dubbed for the telugu "Alaipaiyuthey."
As for the movie, it somehow brings a "Nayakan" vibe. Guy goes to becoming famous while Nayakan had (I think) a slum man become a politician.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._Madhavan
Madhavan had auditioned for a part in the critically-acclaimed movie, Iruvar[20] starring Mohanlal and Aishwarya Rai and directed by Mani Ratnam. Mani Ratnam was pleased with Madhavan's capabilities but wanted a senior actor to play Madhavan's part, so Mani Ratnam confirmed Madhavan could be a part of his next project as a sorry plea
