Welcome to my new Tamil learning thread, "Learning Tamil, My experiences: continued". This thread is a continuation of my old thread, "Learning Tamil, My experiences". This thread will continue where my old thread left off prior to all the nastiness and spams and will run in much the same way as my old thread.

ie: I will post whatever words and phrases I learned on this thread for correction and review along with other queries related to Tamil learning, history of the Tamil script etc.

I look forward to learning Tamil from the members on this forum and to a spam free Tamil learning thread. :D

Since two years, I have not done much Tamil learning, partly because I had not met Shanthi(my asiriyai) much in the last couple of years and so I had been doing it by myself and I did not know where to go from there. Here is the first part of my last lesson. Please make any corrections if necessary. I need help to get back into learning Tamil. ie: motivation. Once one has stopped doing this kind of thing, it is difficult to start again. :( nanRi.

Lesson 26: Future tense of adhu

I always thought that the word "thiN" is usually used when talking about an animal such as a cat, dog, bird or any animal eating and saappidu used when talking about a person eating. :? Correct me if I am mistaken.. As for uN, I usually saw it used in the word "uNavu(food)". I usually like to use the word "uNavu" instead of "saappaadu", because the first time I said that, it caused a confusion due to its almost frightening similarity to the word "saappidu"! :lol: :lol:

Well, uNavu may be right but then unless I'm mistaken its a relatively outdated term, used more in literary tamil rather than conversational, where saapaadu is more widely used.....:)
Still, watever is easy for u to rem./conveys the right meaning! :)

"uNavu" is a very easy word for me.

One day, I wanted to say in Tamil that I like Tamil food, and when I try to say it, a dead and I mean "DEAD" silence fell in the room. :lol2: I think by mistake I said , "naan thamizh saapidu virumbum". :shock: Big oops that day. :oops: Since then, I use "uNavu/uNavai" to mean food.

When I first began my Tamil lessons, Shanthi had asked me what Tamil I want to learn. Pure Tamil, colloquial Tamil, Tamil with Sanskrit words etc.. I told her I want to learn the Tamil which is commonly used and understood by all Tamils. Luckily when she taught me, people were able to understand what I was saying. I always assumed that all Tamil was much the same just with some slightly different ways of talking from place to place. ie: in India they say "aam" to mean "yes" and in Sri Lanka they use "Om" for that same word, but in standard common speech, the word "aam"/"aamaa" will be used to indicate yes.

As a general rule, I believe that when learning any foreign language, it is better to learn the way that all people understand. Regional variations and slangs should be discussed later.

In many Tamil books, magazines and newspapers, I have noticed the occurence of the following letters from Sanskrit: ja, occasionally sha(as in shivaa or gaNEsha), sha(as in vishNu or kirushNa), sa , ha, occasionally ksha(a combination of d+cha is used to write this sound) and sri. Is this a remanant of the old convention of using the Grantha alphabet to write Sanskrit words in Tamil? I heard somewhwere else on the forum that this convention was once used expecially in subjects the required the use of alot of Sanskrit words. Unfortunately, there are no examples of this old convention anywhere on Internet. I hope someone can shed more light on how these letters managed to be retained in modern Tamil usage.

colloquial is better (dialects differ from area to area)

Indian tamil is understood better in india.

Try tamizh without any accents.

I would say normal tamizh devoid of any particular dialect is best understood (without slang)

uN, arunthu, pusi, saappidu, thin - all can be used for 'eat'. arunthu, uN and saappidu means both eat and drink. tunnu is colloquial form of 'thin'. Typical of Madras Tamil.

Colloquial Tamil changes depending what region of Tamilnadu you are in. It is true in Srilanka also. If you have lived all your life in Tanjore area and visited Coimbatore area you will find it a little bit difficult to understand some words.

It looks like the Tamil which I had been learning from Shanthi is kind of a mixed Tamil with words from colloquial Tamil mixed with words from Pure Tamil, Sanskrit and some slang etc.. I rememberr hearing from her and others that there is different ways of saying the same thing in Tamil. ie: For understand, there is theriyum. theriyagiRadhu, puriyum, puriyagiRadhu etc, etc, etc.. I would get sooo confused hearing these different words. Because, I do not know which words to use or what is the commonly used terms. :huh: Sorry if I sounded like I blew my fuse on you last post! :oops:

skanthan: To start with learn pure Tamil that is taught with a text book. If you learn both pure(formal) and colloquial Tamil at the same time you will be confused. When you become very proficient in conversational Tamil (pure) you can start learning colloquial Tamil.

I remember when I first became interested in Tamil... It was seeing Tamil dances, hearing Tamil songs and music, hearing Tamil spoken, seeing Tamil scripts all on the TV that first sparked my interest in Tamil back in 1992. In later years, I saw these on Internet and in the Ganesh temple. That time, I already had full blown interest in Hindu culture and religion which since then, I adopted. By 1995, I had full interest in Tamil. In 1996, I got in contact with various Tamil speakers and they put me in contact with other Tamil speakers and over the next few years, I obtained various Tamil language materials ie: Tamil alphabet books, Tamil magazines, Tamil newspapers, books etc... Since then, Tamil language and culture has become a very important part of my life.

My mother tongue is English. I think that in past births, I was a Tamil living in South India and later in Sri Lanka.. I have had people tell me that on the outside, I am English/Canadian, but, inside, in my heart, I am a true Tamil. I do not know if they said this just to flatter me, or, if they feel that in heart and spirit, I am a Tamil. I can also sing Tamil bhajans.

I will post more of my Tamil lessons later today.

I do find long words a little difficult sometimes, but then slowly, I get the hang of those words when they come in front of me. As for your second question, I can fluently read Tamil script. The one letter of the Tamil alphabet that always intrigued me was the letter "ahenam". The one that looks like 3 dots arranged in the form of an upturned triangle. What was that symbols usage? Was it's usage identical to that of the Sanskrit visarga? Was it used to produce sounds such as ga, ha, sa, dha, da, ba, and ja? Once in awhile I will see words with ahenam in Tamil magazines and newspapers and I wont even have a slightest clue as to how I should pronounce these words.

Yes it is used almost like Sanskrit visarga, but not exactly like that. It is used to make the letter sound like a foriegn (Non Tamil) letter. Like "fa" as in "fan" and "phi" as in "philosophy", by prefixing it before the Tamil "pa". Recently there was a Tamil film with the name of this letter "Aaytha ezhuthu".

Well *ahem* I dont claim to be a pulavar......far from tat :P but its also correct to say Thalamayir wen referring to hair of the head.....altho I find mudi more common I feel can be confusing as it also used as a verb meaning 'to finish' (eg. seekr'ma vaele mudi= finish the work soon)....

"you are the embodiment of mercy". i dont know why Om comes in the beginning. And i am not sure wether "embodiment" will be the right translation for "karunai vadivam". but "karunai vadivam" is quite a popular phrase in Tamil poems. vadivam means "form" so it somewhat means like "u are the form in which mercy manifests itself.
in my own words, it is similar to saying "we see u as the definition of mercy"

pugundhom - entered (literally means entered ur asylum.

normally "charan" is accompanied with either "pugundhom" or "adaindhom" (attained). have u heard of bharathiyar's "ninnai charanadainthein" ? very similar in meaning)
other usage of this word is "charanam" which also means an act of dedication. "naan unakku charanam" - "i dedicate myself unto you"

innarul - sweet bliss or good bliss. (innarul = inimai + arul. though inimai literally means sweet, it is used to denote goodness. like ppl say "iniya puththandu nalwaazhtukkal" - (wish u a happy new year). i think i can suggest that iniya implies happiness here. for a bit more colloqial exposure, "iniya nanban" is commonly used to mean "good friend".i hope u got the sense of iniya here)

I am completely floored by ur interest in learning tamil. I think initially watching movies is good to get a gist of the language (thats how i learnt hindi :D) If u want to learn tamil script and pure tamil, u need to look for guide. Do you not find the colloquial Tamil to sound quite similar to Malayalam? I myself find that it very closely resembles Malayalam and the Tamil which is spoken by Tamils from Fiji.

Colloquial tamizh of various parts differ in sound.

The way madurai tamizh sounds, u cant find the same in elongated rinign of kovai tamizh, or the dialect of thirunelveli.

Chennai thamizh is extremely cosmopolitan with mixture of almost all languages under the sun.

So I dont think we feel tamizh sounds esp colloquial tamizh sounds like malyalam.

malyalam is more nasal
tamizh is crisp

I aint sure of tamils of fiji though :)

Fiji Tamils speak a dialect of Tamil which is spoken in Chennapattinam. Their Tamil is very similar to colloquial Tamil as commonly spoken by Tamil from India and Sri Lanka.

ie: For "I want water" they will say, "naan thaNNIr vENNum"

For "I don't want..." they say, "naan...vENNaa"

I have heard people say that Malayalam is spoken in Fiji which kind of suprised me as though there are people of Malayalam descent in Fiji, no body really speaks Malayalam as opposed to Tamil and Telugu which are spoken spoken by large numbers of people there. Out of the 5000 people in Fiji who have knowledge of Tamil, 1000 can fluenly read, write and speak fluenly in Tamil.

Before, I have had people, Tamil speakers themselves, tell me that Tamil is not a sweet language. This really shocked me as on Tamil websites throughout the the internet, Tamil is praised as being as a sweet language by its speakers. Why did this one Tamil speaker, from Chennai, tell me that Tamil is not sweet?

I am participating off and on here. When Shanthi, my old Tamil teacher starts teaching me Tamil again, from where she left off over 2 years ago, :lol: you'll be seeing me more often on this forum, esp. on this thread. :wink: One question, are there still discussions going on in forum about the similarities between Malayalam and Tamil? Because it appears to me that Malayalam very closely resembles Tamil in it's colloquial form. ie: The numbers in colloquial Tamil and the numbers in Malayalam. I would like to explore a little on these topics and bring them to discussion in this thread amidst my Tamil learning. :D

Anyways.. Here is my good news. A few days ago, I met Shanthi at the Ganesh temple. We had been talking about how we had not met for Tamil lessons for over 2 years. During the discussion, I expressed to Shanthi that I would like to start taking Tamil lesson from her again. She said to me that from next month, we will meet every second week for tamil lessons. :wink: This is so great. I am so happy and excited that Shanthi will be teaching me Tamil again! :D This is so good that I am going to start learning Tamil again!

Nothing happened to Shanthi. She is working out of home and is busy. The thing I said earlier about Shanthis family not wanting her to teach me Tamil. I felt that way, because one day when I phoned for Shanthi to find out when we will meet again, her daughter got on the phone with me. When I asked if her mother was there and if I could speak to her, the daughter said in a somewhat snotty tone, "Yeah, but I'm on the phone. Can you call later?" and hung up. I found that to be kind of rude. Maybe her family thought that it seemed odd that I had not contacted Shanthi for such a long time or come to her house for the lessons and here I was or they thought I was :shock: gasp, bothering Shanthi. :(

But, paravayillai! That should not stop me from learning Tamil. Maybe I need to hang out around Ganesh temple and here more often and re immerse myself in the Tamil language.

That is what happened when I was living with some Hindi speaking people from Fiji for 2 years. I got so immersed in that language that I picked it up to a certain extent! :D I am fairly conversant in Fiji Hindi and also can speak a little bit of Indian Hindi. :)

I have seen many Tamil books in Ganesh temple and have gotten hold of Tamil books, newspapers and other materials in Tamil from Tamil friends and on top of that, there are many Tamil language websites in the internet.

Before that, I have watched shows featuring the cultures of India and Sri Lanka and watched documentaries about those two countries. And I have also read books about India and Sri Lanka and some of them even gave examples of the scripts and in an old encyclopedia I had seen a chart showing all of the major Indian alphabets including Tamil. From there I had learned most of the Tamil letters. And an old friend of mine from Sri Lanka used to send me copies of the Sunday Observer and from time to time I would find some advertisments with the same thing over in English Tamil and Sinhala and I kind of figured out some of it by myself and learned more of the Tamil script.. Fortunately in 1997, someone here in Edmonton sent me some Tamil alphabet sheets so then I would be able to learn other letters which were missing from that old alphabet chart.

I have e-kalappai and Unicode Tamil(Anjal???) installed on my computer. And the program I am using is Windows 98+.

I can see some of the other Tamil fonts which others are using just fine, but since about a year and a half ago, I cannot see e-kalappai on my computer and whatever I tried to type comes up as garbled letters. I tried reinstalling my Tamil fonts and setting my computer to various fornats like User Defined and UTF-8 and notthing happens. I do not know what is wrong with my Tamil fonts.

I sure miss those days when I was typing in Tamil on FH. That was a pastime of mine in those long ago days.

This morning after having edited my Tamil bhajan and added it to my personal bhajan collection, I sat infront of my altar and sang my bhajan and it turned out wonderfully! I felt so happy and at peace just looking at ambaaLs photo and singing my bhajan. :) :thumbsup:
