2005 Sports
Controversies.
1) Sourav`s career and Sania`s skirts were the two major talking points of the year in India
2) Cycling legend Lance Armstrong's alleged use of blood booster EPO. American atheletics and even European tennis was not spared by drug usage allegations.
3) While preparing for hosting the next football worldcup Germany found itself embarassed when referee Robert Hoyzer was jailed rigging games in return for payment in a scandal.

Economy
What happened in 2005
1. GDP Growth rate around 8.0 (expected 8.1)
2. Maturing service industry (double digit growth) and manufacturing showing improvement.
3. Overcame Tsunami and soaring international oil price
4. Sensex hits record 9200 points
5. Overall the liberalisation continued thought Reform areas like divestment, FDI in retail, insurance, pension and banking received some set back. Infrastructure development like roads, airports, ports and railways got a boost though critical bottle necks remain.
6. Opening up of Indian skies (Pvt airline industry domestic and international)
What is expected in 2006
1. GDP Growth rate around 9.0 (expected 8.5)
2. Budget 2006 is expected to bring in the 2nd green revolution.
3. Kick off of the 1,74,000 crore Bharath Nirman project (Infrastructure project)
4. Opening up of FDI in retail.
5. Tariffs to be brought down to ASEAN level.
6. Steps to reducing the dangerous trade deficit (decreasing the enormous difference between import and export)
My wish for Indian economy 2006
1. Manufacturing giving competition to service industry in terms of growth.

Also had a novel of hers (translated into English by Kushwant Singh) as a lesson at school: The stench of Kerosene.
