IIFA has Hrithik Roshan, Salman despite reports of carnage of Tamils!!

Even as reports of large number of Tamil civilian casualties during the war between Sri Lankan govt and LTTE that ended on 18 May 2009 continues to pour in, the Indian big stars like Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, etc, have given their consent to take part in the glittering IIFA event to be hosted in Colombo from June 3-5 this month.

A doctor, who was part of the medical help team that visited Sri Lankan refugee camps in the war ravaged area, has revealed that he saw a huge line of suffering civilians and treated almost forty thousand Tamils.

Of these at least ten thousand were children in the need of medial help. In fact, this huge number of suffering civilian population was part of the 300,000 people displaced due to ongoing war between the Sri Lankan Govt and LTTE.

Doctor was aghast at the claim of Sri Lankan govt that there were no large number of casualties and even questioned the numbers given by UN (it put the causalities in the range of 7,000). However, doctor put the numbers to be at least four times higher than what was stated by UN.

The Tamil groups in India, who are protesting against the holding of IIFA function in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, have also been trying to point out this bizarre fact of war in the island nation.

However, despite of these protests in India, a Sri Lankan minister Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has claimed that majority of the bollywood stars had given their consent to take part in the IIFA function. Even reports suggest that Salman Khan will be going to attend the function.

In fact, Hrithik Roshan, too, has given his consent and will also be playing a celebrity cricket match on the occasion to help the needy LTTE ravaged child soldiers. Chances are that besides Hrithik Roshan, the team will also have actor and model Dino Morea and some other members of his group in it.

Another celebrity team will be lead by Suniel Shetty, who has also confirmed his participation at the function. There will also be renowned cricketers like Sanath Jaisurya and Kumar Sangakaara from Sri Lankan side.

However, latest reports suggest that bollywood King Khan has backed out of the function. The ostensible reason is some other prior commitment but sources say that Shah Rukh Khan does not want to involve himself in any controversy after being the object of attack for his comment on Pakistani players during IPL.

Earlier, there was speculation that Shah Rukh Khan will be attending the function as his arch rival and Shehanshah of bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, had declared his intention not to attend the function due to Tamil protests. Amitabh is the brand ambassador of IIFA but did not want to antagonize Tamils over the issue.

Even Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan are unlikely to attend the IIFA event in Colombo due to ‘Raavan’ Tamil connection. ‘Raavan’ is being made in Hindi and Tamil simultaneously and expected to release on June 18. And now by going to Colombo, they did not want to queer the pitch for their upcoming flick.

Similarly, ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam, stars like Kamal Hassan, etc, have already declared their boycott of the function

Tamil protests keep celebs away from IIFA

Mumbai: The organisers of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards could be ruing their decision to hold the ceremony in the Sri Lankan capital this year.

Little did they imagine that the island’s Sinhala vs Tamil issue would suck Bollywood into its vortex.

Because of strong protests by Tamil groups against IIFA holding the ceremony in Colombo, the top actors of tinsel town have cited prior commitments to give the occasion a miss.

IIFA’s brand ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan, will not attend the function. His son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya are tied up with the promotional activity of their forthcoming film Raavan. The absence of the Bachchans will be significant given that IIFA has been viewed as their ‘family affair’ for years. DNA sent the senior Bachchan an SMS for comment, but he did not respond.

Others likely to be absent are Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, and Imran Khan. Aamir Khan, as usual, will not attend.

Shah Rukh tweeted: “I don’t think I will be able to come for IIFA…too much work here, will miss Colombo.”

Tamil film personalities such as Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, Vijay, Ajit and Surya will be keeping away from Colombo.

While many have genuine work compulsions, sources, however, have indicated that a few of the actors fear they would lose out on popularity in film-crazy Tamil Nadu (TN) by attending the event.

At the forefront of the protests against the hosting of IIFA in Colombo have been the recently-found groups Naam Tamilar (which staged a demonstration in front of Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow and Salman Khan’s house) and Iyakkam (meaning ‘movement’), and the Vaiko-led party MDMK. The main TN parties, DMK and ADMK, have not expressed their stand on the issue.

Iyakkam staged a demonstration in front of Kamal Hassan’s house, asking him to resign as chairman of Ficci’s Media & Entertainment Business Conclave. This, despite the actor saying he had no intention of going to Sri Lanka.

“The event was earlier scheduled to be held in Seoul in South Korea. We do not know why it was shifted to Sri Lanka. But we are sure the event would not have been shifted without Ficci or Kamal Hassan knowing it,” Iyakkam’s Thirumurugan Gandhi told DNA. “We strongly object to Ficci describing Sri Lanka as New Sri Lanka, when international human rights forums have accused the Lankan government of war crimes.”

The man who is striding like a colossus over Tamil political and cinema worlds for the past 60 years is turning 87 today. Kalaignar Karunanidhi is a man who made his mark so indelibly in both politics and cinema. Though he excelled in everything he touched IndiaGlitz being a film portal takes a look at his achievements in cinema. The golden pen which started writing for films with ‘Rajakumari’ in 1947 has delivered its latest product ‘Pensingam’ today in 2010. The journey has been a miraculous one for the past 63 years.

Kalaignar plunged into cultural and social movement as early as when he was just 13 years old. His love for art forms has not diminished one bit even today. After lured by the self-respect movement Karunanidhi thought stages are the best media to carry his social messages across and he proved it right in history. His natural flair for writing and going into details of issues made him a writer for the change. Some of his early plays like Manimagudam, Ore Ratham, Thooku Medai, Vellikizhamai, Udhayasooriyan, Silappathikaram virtually changed the way people thought and brought them close to his self-respect movement. Interestingly most his early plays were subsequently made into feature films in later years.

He often says that Art without a principle is like a house without a roof. True to his words he revolutionised the Tamil stage first and them Tamil screen with his purposeful socially relevant messages filled scripts and dialogues. They were so fiery that the governments more than once tried to ban his works.

As screen writer Kalaignar has few parallels. The setting was ideal when he started to write for films. Historical costume dramas were the popular genre and he used the setting perfectly to put his messages of democracy and social equality in public. His first writing for a film came in 1947 with the film ‘Rajakumari’. This film is close to Kalaignar’s heart more because that brought him and MGR together for the first time on screen. ‘Rajakumari’ had lot of supernatural elements but Kalaignar used even that better showing his brilliance.

Staring with Rajakumari, Kalaignar wrote the script and dialogues for many early MGR starrers like Abimanyu, Manthiri Kumari, Marutha Naattu Ilavarasi, Naam, Pudhumai Pithan which catapulted both the writer and the actor to stardom. His idioms like ‘Kolai Oru Kalai’ in Mandhira Kumari is part of cinema folklore. His dialogues in Malaikallan based on Namakkal Kavignar’s story helped MGR reach the top.

A couple of years before Mallaikallan, Kalaignar had set the industry on fire with his fiery words in Parasakthi. Parasakthi was a turning point in Tamil cinema as it promoted reformist ideologies with its scintillating dialogues written by Kalaignar. It also introduced two great actors Sivaji Ganesan and S. S. Rajendran who gave life to Kalaignar’s dialogues on screen in later years. Today Parasakthi is a part of Tamil political history and in the history of the self-respect movement. It is on record that only after ‘Parasakthi’ the practice of releasing story and dialogues of a film in a book form and on LP records started in Tamil Nadu. Such was the impact of his dialogues in Parasakthi. Even today any aspiring actor who wants to enter films has to mouth the dialogues of Kalaignar to prove himself, particularly the court room dialogues in Parasakthi. All credits to Kalignar.

The Kalaignar-Sivaji alliance is one of the most successful in Tamil cinema. Both complemented each other in the best possible ways to bring out the best. Panam, Thirumbipaar, Manohara, Rangoon Radha, Raja Rani, Puthaiyal, Kuravanchi all were big hits because of the dialogues. The social films of Kalignar-Sivaji combo talked about widow remarriage, abolition of untouchability, self-respect marriages etc. and became instant hits with the youth of the day.

Thirumbiaar was filled with overtones of political satire. Kalaignar brilliantly had used the word “Nonsense” which was used by the then prime minister Nehru to refer DMK to be said by the hero several times taking a dig at Nehru and his congress. Manohara was another eternal favourite of many. Kalaignar had given a contemporary touch to a play of the thirties. The dialogues had every attitude you could imagine and it struck you like a sharp arrow. Who can forget Kannamba saying ‘Poruthathu Podhum, Pongi ezhu Maganey’. Film like Poompuhar, Poomalai, Mani Makudam, Avan Pithana? was popular with the metallic voice of SSR.

After Kalaignar became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu his involvement in films was reduced as he had to spend more time in managing the state. In the seventies Kalaignar was better active with films like Thayillapillai, Nenjukku Neethi, Makkal Kural, Vandikaran Magal. But these films were seen more as political films given the political scenario in the state at that time and did not find favour with the audience.

But in the eighties Kalaignar’s returned with bang and his rule in cinema started again with the successful film ‘Neethikku Thandanai’ directed by SA Chandrasekhar. It was followed by Paalaivana Rojakkal, Pasa Paravaikal, Padatha Theneekkal, Niyaya Tharasu which proved Kalaignar can giftedly adapt to any generation and any period.

Again in the nineties Kalaignar was very comfortable to work with the newest generation of film makers. ‘Pasakiligal’ and ‘Kannamma’ were made by the present generation and they found Kalaigna’s dialogues as suitable as it was ever. The sun which knows no rest is still grabbing the attention. He bagged the best dialogue writer award for the film ‘Uliyin Osai’ in 2008.

Kalaignar’s latest film ‘Pensingam’ is releasing in 152 theatres today and this massive release prove the drawing power of his pen even after sixty years. Another big budget film ‘Ponnan Shankar’ written by him is under production.

Kalaignar has proved pen is mightier than sword. Every drop of the ink that flows out of his pen works for Tamil. His achievements are many and Tamil film industry feels proud to have his presence in it.

A grand audio launch function is being planned for 'Vamsam', a film which would mark the arrival of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's grandson Arulnidhi Thamizharasu as hero.

If sources are to be believed, the music release event is scheduled in Chennai on July 2. The Chief Minister would preside over the function and would release the audio.

And the first copy would be received by Vijay and Suriya, the two top league actors of Tamil cinema. Many big guns of Kollywood would attend the grand function, sources maintain.

Arrangements for the event are being made by M K Thamizharasu, Arulnidhi's father and the producer of 'Vamsam'. Directed by Pandiraj of 'Pasanga' fame, ‘Vamsam’, set in the backdrop of a village in southern Tamil Nadu, has Sunaina as heroine.

Brand powered!

It’s a concept that hasn’t been explored before, but one that has immense potential to provide relief to producers and production houses that are struggling to meet spiralling costs associated with making a film.

No wonder then, it is being welcomed with open arms by a majority of those who have learnt of it.

The concept is simple, but powerful. Just as one gets to witness the brand logo of a television channel in the corner of one’s TV screen, audiences will now be able to see the logo of a popular brand on one corner of the theatre screen during the screening of a film through which it wishes to advertise its product.

The move, while providing brands with the kind of publicity they seek, will provide producers with the kind of money that can considerably ease the pressure on their wallets.

Claims Jai Gurudev, the proprietor of a concern that specialises in promoting brands through movies, “As far as we know, we are the first in the world to introduce this concept and we have taken measures to patent this idea of displaying the logo of a brand in the corner of theatre screens during the screening of a two-and-a-half hour feature film. We are 100 per cent sure that this is a breakthrough and that nowhere in the world has this sort of advertising been resorted to. What’s more, we feel good that a Tamil film will go down in the record books as the first movie in the world that will have this sort of a brand logo. It will be a much-awaited Tamil film, which is expected to release in the month of August. The company, whose brand logo is to be displayed, is a telecom major.

On what made him come up with this unique concept, Gurudev says, “Advertisers have many media to promote their clients’ brands. Movies are one medium through which you can take the brand to the nook and corners of the country.

“Today, there is no guarantee for the money invested by producers in a film project. This innovation, I feel, will help producers by assuring them a minimum guarantee amount. This will not in any way affect the experience or joy of watching a film on screen. I’m sure once the first movie with this innovation releases, every producer in India and the world will opt for this option as it will help them get back up to almost 25% of their total investment in a project. What’s more, this money is got back by the producers even before the release of the film,” he says.

Gurudev’s company has also been dealing with in-film promotions. Explaining about that concept, he says, “The concept of in-film product placement started about 10 years ago in Hollywood. In fact, it was Cast Away, which triggered interest in the idea of in-film product placement. We have been doing it in Tamil films. In the recently-released Sura, we have got the hero to use a particular brand of car throughout the second half. We have also helped finalise deals for Boss Engira Baskaran, K V Anand’s Ko and Vijay’s Bodyguard.

So, how have MNCs, corporates and producers reacted to his logo idea? Says Gurudev, “There has been an overwhelming response. Company heads and several producers are excited about the idea. Already several people from both sides have approached us to do the same for their projects. However, there is a small percentage of people who have expressed their apprehension about it, but I’m sure that their apprehensions will disappear once the first movie hits the screens.”

Good News for all fans of ace director Selvaraghavan, one of the most creative brains in Kollywood.

He has restarted the shoot of his Malai Nerathu Mayakkam today (June 28) morning in Chennai. The title of the film is likely to change.

A delighted and visibly happy Selvaraghavan told sify.com: “ The shoot has started today and it is my eighth film, fourth with Dhanush. I’m still nervous like a beginner. We had earlier shot for 14 days and now the shoot has resumed with Dhanush and Andrea in the lead. GV Prakash is the music director while Ramji is the cinematographer.” Added Dhanush: “First day, first shot with Selva , it feels like going back to school again! A new film, a new role and when it is Selva, it is a new Avatar for me.”

The trend spotted in Kollywood in the first half of 2010 is that star system has become all pervasive, as small films are falling like nine pins.

The success of films like Singam, Paiyaa and the just-released Raavanan, as seen in Chennai, have proved that larger-than-life films and mass masala flicks, where the hero is a one-man army, have made a comeback to Kollywood. The small-is-beautiful phenomenon, which was seen in 2008 and 2009, seems to be losing its fizz at the box-office. “It is only the big stars who can guarantee an opening. The audiences’ honeymoon with small films seems to be on the wane,” says a Chennai-based theatre manager.

Fifty-five straight Tamil films were released in the first half of the year, compared to 51 during the same period last year. Out of this, only eight will recover their cost or make profits. Says Abirami Ramanathan, leading exhibitor, “In filmi terms, I would say it has been the year of the good (superhits), the bad (flops) and the ugly (films that have failed to even take an opening). Big stars are able to get an opening and if the content is good, they will make profits. For small films, there is no opening and even if the content is good, they need television publicity which costs almost half the budget of the film itself! We have to go for flexible ticket admission rates if small films have to succeed.”

According to Ramanarayanan, president of Tamil Film Producers Council, “It has been a mixed bag for films this year so far. I still have faith in small films, but they need to boost up their publicity before release. Producers of small films should aggressively promote their films if they have to reach the audiences. I feel small films made on reasonable budgets will attract viewers if their content is good, as proved by Kalavani.”

Says G Dhananjayan, a producer who has made small films, “The Tamil film industry has moved away from producers and distributors to exhibitors, due to the increasing number of films releasing every week. It is now a buyers’ (exhibitors) market than a sellers’ (producers) one with the power of controlling the run of the films resting with exhibitors. No longer can a producer of a critically-acclaimed film expect his product to pick up after a week or two as by that time, the film would have been removed from the theatres. Under these circumstances, the best solution is not to risk with run-of-the-mill or realistically-niche films but to make mass commercial wholesome entertaining films with saleable artistes.”

However, Kollywood trade analysts state that it is only a handful of stars that can bring in the audiences. Many producers are still running after big stars who have delivered duds, in the fond hope that at least their next film will strike jackpot and they will, in the process, recoup their earlier losses. No wonder the superstars are able to demand and get half of the budget of the film as their salaries, irrespective of whether their films are successful or not. As a Mumbai-based corporate producer lamented, “Kollywood is the only industry in the world where flops really do not alter an actor’s image or star ratings of a star. This has led to a situation where every actor is trying to model himself as a larger-than-life hero irrespective of the storyline of the film.”

இந்த நிலையில் தனது அடுத்த படத்திற்கு கிளம்பி விட்டார் மணிரத்தினம். இப்படத்தை இந்தியில் இயக்கவுள்ளார். ரன்பீர் கபூர்தான் நாயகன். ஹீரோயின் உள்ளிட்ட பிற கலைஞர்கள் உள்ளிட்டவை குறித்து இன்னும் முடிவெடுக்கவில்லையாம்.

இப்படத்தை முழுக்க முழுக்க இந்தியாவின் பெருநகரங்களில் எடுக்கவுள்ளார் மணி. முக்கியக் காட்சிகள் லண்டனில் படமாக்கப்படவுள்ளன. இது ஒரு பக்கா சிட்டி சப்ஜெக்ட் என்பதையே இது சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது.

முதலில் இப்படத்தை தமிழ், இந்தியில் என இரு மொழிகளில் எடுக்கத் திட்டமிட்டிருந்தாராம் மணிரத்தினம். தமிழ்ப் பதிப்பில் சிம்புவை நடிக்க வைக்கவும் யோசித்திருந்தார். ஆனால் இப்போது அதை டிராப் செய்து விட்டார். இந்தியில் மட்டும் இயக்குகிறார்.

மணிரத்தினத்தின் பல படங்களின் மெகா வெற்றிக்கு முக்கிய காரணமாக திகழ்ந்தவரான பழம்பெரும் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் பி.சி.ஸ்ரீராம் இப்படத்திற்கு ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்யவுள்ளார். இசை வழக்கம் போல இசைப் புயல் ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான்.

She is the latest from Kalaignar family to step into Tamil film industry as a producer. Kanomozhi who is known as a poet all along will start her first feature film production soon.

Now almost every known member of the Kalaignar family is into some aspect of film making in Kollywood. Kalaignar himself is a patriarch who has been working in the industry for over five decades.

His firs son M K Muthu was an actor and Muthu's son Arivunidhi is a singer cum actor now.

Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin has also acted in films and TV serials before. Now his son Udhayanidhi Stalin is an active producer with his banner Red Giant Movies. Similarly Union Minister M K Alagiri's son Dhayanidhi Alagiri is also a busy producer with his banner Cloud Nine Movies.

Recently another son of Kalaignar M K Thamizharasu completed his first production 'Vamsam' with his own son Arulnidhi as the hero.

Now the only sibling who was left behind is also venturing into film production. Sources say Kanimozhi is all set to launch her first production venture and the cast and crew are being finalised now. As usual keeping with the family reputation even Kanimozhi's film would be a mega budget extravaganza they added.

He also says he has done enough films with Silambarasan when he was a little star and now he has no intention of doing a film with Silambarasan after he has become the little super star.

"After ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ Silambarasan has got two big offers and I don’t have to decide his career moves", agreed T. Rajendar.

Telugu blockbuster and revolutionary movie ‘Magadheera’ is titled as ‘Mannadhi Mannan’ in Tamil.

Directed by S S Rajamouli, the movie stars Telugu Megastar Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Tej in the lead along with Kajal Agarwal. The movie is an all-time hit in Telugu.

It is a story of rebirth and love which has been shown in a spectacular way.

A few scenes have been re-shot to suit the tastes of Tamil audiences. Big budget producer Kalaipuli S Thanu along with reputed Telugu cinema banner Geetha Arts is releasing the movie Tamil Nadu.

In the past, Telugu blockbuster ‘Arundhathee’ was released in Tamil and it evoked similar response to what it received in Telugu. Tamil audiences have always encouraged unique and different scripts. The producers of ‘Mannadhi Mannan’ would hope to see the movie be a super hit as it was in Telugu.

It seems like Silambarasan who was cleverly managing his acts not getting into the remake wagon has finally boarded the wagon. Silambarasan has signed the remake of the recent sensational Telugu hit ‘Vedam’ that starred Allu Arjun, Manoj and Anushka in lead roles.

Silambarasan who recently saw the Telugu ‘Vedam’ was floored immediately by the Cable Raju character played by Allu Arjun. The Tamil remake rights are with R B Choudary of Super Good Films and with the Tamil version R B Choudary's son and actor 'Jithan' Ramesh will also turn a producer. Silambarasan has even completed a photo session for the remake.

Anushka was contacted to play her role in Tamil also. But the actress is said to have denied the offer. So the new sensation Tapsee of ‘Aadukalam’ may play the role of the commercial sex-worker in the film.

Silambarasan who was supposed to be is London this time for the 'Podaa Podi' shoot is still in Chennai for some reasons. One reason doing the rounds is that the artistes playing the secondary characters are being trained in dance as the film is a dance subject. Another reason said is that the team still hasn’t got the permissions to shoot at some special locations in London.

தனது படத்தில் நடிக்கும் நடிகர், நடிகையரிடம் ஸ்கிரிப்ட்டை இவர் சொல்வதே கிடையாது. இதனால்தான் தபு போன்றவர்கள் கூட இவருடன் பணியாற்ற மறுத்து விட்டனர்.

Suriya, while acting in Ram Gopal Varma’s Ratha Charithram and A R Murgadoss’s 7am Arivu, has also signed up for KV Anand’s next film. Last year, even before completing Vettaikaran, Vijay began work on Sura, his 50th film. Now, the actor is simultaneously acting in Kaval Kathal and Velayudham. He has also signed up for the Tamil remake of 3 Idiots with director Shankar!

Vikram, whose next film officially is Vedi with director Boopathy Pandian, has already shot for a few weeks for Selvaraghavan’s next film. Now, he will also be doing a film with director Vijay! If Suriya, Vijay and Vikram are doing so many films, can Ajith be far behind? The thalai (as Ajith is better known), who had taken a break to take part in racing tournaments, has recently started work on his 50th film, Mankatha, with Venkat Prabhu. He’s also planning to work with Vishnu Vardhan for a prequel to Billa. Meanwhile, the hottest young director in town, Vijay, has also got priority dates from Ajith.

Dhanush is currently working on five films — Aadukalam, Maapillai, Seedan, Idhu Malai Nerathu Mayakkam and Uthamaputhiran, all of which are in various stages of completion. The star has now signed for hit maker Hari’s tentatively titled Aruval, opposite Tamannaah. Meanwhile, Simbu, after the success of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, is now doing two films — Vaanam and Poda Podi. Says Simbu, “There is nothing wrong in doing two films at a time. Having completed my talkie portion in Vaanam, I’m now in London on a 45-day schedule for Poda Podi in which I have a different look. When I return to Chennai by the end of September, I will definitely be signing a very big film, for which shooting will start in December.”

Karthi, who will have three releases this year (Aayirathil Oruvan, Paiyaa and Naan Maahan Alla), is now shooting for Siruthai. He is in the final stages of negotiations with two well-known directors and announcements regarding these projects are expected once the inauspicious Aadi month is over. Jayam Ravi, who is shooting simultaneously for two films — Prabhu Deva’s Ich and Ameer’s Aadhi Bhagawan — has also signed up with a new director for Boologam.

Post Madrassapattinam, Arya has two films ready for release — Boss Engira Baskaran and Chikku Bukku. He’s currently working on Bala’s Avan Ivan and will also sign two big projects by the end of the month. Vishal, who is also doing Avan Ivan, will start work soon on two films, one directed by Prabhu Deva and the other by Boopathy Pandian. New entrants like Aadhi, Vishnu, Ajmal, and Shanthnoo too have signed up for more than one film.

It looks like the trend that prevailed in the 1980s, when top stars like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan did multiple films, is making a comeback. Concludes Mano Akkineni, leading producer and grand daughter of legendary producer LV Prasad, “I think you need stars to sell a movie. Today, everything depends on the opening weekend and only stars can create that buzz around a film and entice the audiences to the theatres.”

For the first time in Europe, a film festival is to be organized for the purpose of celebrating the heritage and genre of South Indian Films. SSIFF- Swiss South Indian Film Festival brings out together the work of South India’s finest film makers & artists to showcase their talent at an international level.

SSIFF will be a perfect gateway for the European community to get familiar with the South Indian cultural and social trivia through its films, says its founder Mr. Kanagalingam.

This festival is one of the biggest festive of its kind for South Indian Films outside India. And also, this will be providing a great opportunity for European critics to explore the south Indian culture and tradition. Films of all South Indian languages, viz. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada will be featured during this wonderful occasion, starting 29 October 2010 till 31 October 2010 at Casino Kursaal, Interlaken (Switzerland).

Every year SSIFF would select three films from each South Indian language, a total of 12 films every year will be screened at the film festival for the European and expat community. Leading actors and actresses, directors and technicians from South Indian film industry will be invited as guests. When M. Suresh dived out of a car during a shoot for a television serial, he fell on a rocky surface. He suffered a nerve injury and within moments slipped into coma. “It took a year for me to recover. But what was really difficult was to meet the hospital expenses,” says Suresh, who has been a stunt artist for 20 years, and ‘dupe' for actors such as Arjun, Murali, Prabhu and many Telugu actors.

“Many dupes have died as a result of the injuries suffered during action scenes.Earlier lookalikes were made into stunt dupes. But today with camera tricks, anyone can be the dupe for an actor if he has a similar body structure,” explains Pandian, president of South Indian Cine Stunt Directors and Artists Union. Car and bike stunts are the riskiest sequences for the artists. A minor slip can blow up the car or result in a major crash. Fire sequences, where the dupes don the role of heroes, have proved fatal for many despite fire-safety jackets.

“Many have died of suffocation. Our fighters have worked for films in all languages and Hollywood movies,” says Mr. Pandian.

Kaasi has been a dupe for many foreign actors. He has proved his mettle in French, Italian and Hollywood movies. “They (foreign film makers) are astounded by the amount of risk our stuntmen take,” he says, adding the safety measures in foreign films are very high.

Saravanan, who has been in the field for 17 years and a dupe for Sarath Kumar, flashes a deep scar near his jaw. It was the result of a fight sequence in which a glass piece pierced into his mouth. “My face has been disfigured with many such instances. But it is not the risk that we fear. It is the poverty. We lose our livelihood if the injury results in disability he says. These artists are selected after a rigorous test of their martial arts, driving, swimming and horse-riding skills.

As Mr. Pandian puts it: “We walk into the jaws of death every day. But we still pray that we get such sequences frequently to stay in job.”

Sundar C back in action

Sundar C was one of the most successful commercial film directors, before he decided to go in front of the camera and perform as an actor.

Initially he tasted success as an action hero with films like Thalainagaram, but later due to lack of story and screenplay his films became repetitive.

Now Sundar C is making a comeback as director and actor with Nagaram Marupakkam Besides wielding the megaphone, Sundar would also play the lead role, and Anuya is the heroine.

The audio of the film will be launched on September 4. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi the chief guest at the function where he will present the first copy to Kamal Haasan

Balu Mahendra rewinds to his heyday in the South Indian film industry.

Listening to Balu Mahendra is like viewing with your mind's eye clips of some of the big hits and significant films in South India, made in the seventies and eighties. One of the pioneering directors who gave a new realistic direction to Tamil cinema in the 1970's, Balu also raised the bar of cinematography.

For the last three years, Balu has been busy with his film institute in Chennai.

Teaching cinema

“It is more like a ‘gurukulam.' I enjoy teaching cinema to my students. I make them watch several world classics and then discuss those films. The other day, I was showing them Satyajit Ray's ‘Pather Panchali'; I must have seen it at least a hundred times and know it frame by frame, but when the screening finished, I could not speak about it, as there were tears in my eyes. But my favourite Ray films are ‘Charulata' and ‘Aparajito.'

“I still try to see as many classics as possible. I have been doing it since my days as a student in the Film and Television Institute, Pune. One major difference I have noticed since I left the film institute is the emergence of Iran as a major force in world cinema. I hadn't heard of Iran then, but now they undoubtedly make some of the best films in the world,” he said as he went on waxing lyrical about cinema.

He is, in fact, busy planning for a movie. “My next film will be in Tamil and will feature newcomers; the shoot will begin soon,” said Balu who was in Kozhikode, for a book release.

“This visit brings back pleasant memories. The last time I came to Kozhikode was for the shoot of my first film, ‘Nellu' [Malayalam] in which I was the cinematographer. I had stopped by on my way to Mananthavady, the film's location. The experience behind the camera was unforgettable.I have always loved nature and nature was at its best in Wayanad at that time,” he recalled.

Ramu Karyat was the director of ‘Nellu.' So, how did Ramu discover Balu?

“Karyat had seen my diploma film at film institute. He liked my work and gave me the assignment. It was the best debut I could have hoped for; I had seen his movie ‘Chemmeen' and was impressed. I was lucky that I could work with some of the finest directors in Malayalam cinema such as Karyat, P.N. Menon, K.S. Sethumadhavan and Bharathan. I was also the cinematographer of K. Viswanath's Telugu classic ‘Shankarabharanam,' which was a phenomenon in all the languages it was dubbed into. The film was rejected by as many as 45 distributors before it was released,” said Balu.

Reminiscing his association with Bharathan, Balu said: “I had cranked the camera for his debut film. I had also manned the camera for the debut films of two other filmmakers.They are J. Mahendran (‘Mullum Malarum') and Mani Ratnam (‘Pallavi Anu Pallavi').”

Meeting Mani Ratnam

Did Mani's rise to fame come as a surprise to him?

“No. I still remember my first meeting with him, way back in 1982. He said he wanted to direct a film in Kannada and I asked him if he had learnt direction from an institute. ‘No,' he said. Then I asked him if he had assisted somebody in direction. ‘No,' he replied. So how was he going to direct, I asked. He said if I agreed to be his cinematographer, he was confident that he could direct. I agreed to do the film because I was impressed with the intensity with which he narrated the story to me. I am so proud of him today,” said Balu, who added that Mani's ‘Mouna Ragam' and ‘Nayagan' are among his favourite movies.

“‘Azhiyatha Kolangal,' my first film in Tamil is autobiographical. Although it was a different kind of film, it was successful at the box office. ‘Marupadiyum,' an adaptation of Mahesh Bhatt's Hindi film ‘Arth,' was dangerously close to my own life. ‘Veedu' was in a way my tribute to my mother; I never saw her smile while we were building our house. ‘Sandhya Ragam' was a look into what could be my old age; you see, till recently, I was waging a battle against aging, like dyeing my hair and moustache,” said Balu. Although he hasn't seen many Malayalam movies of late, of the few he saw, he said he enjoyed ‘Ore Kadal.'

“It was an excellent film and Meera Jasmine was superb in it. The director of ‘Ore Kadal,' Shyamprasad is a talented director. In fact, as the jury chairman in 1999, I had given him a State film award for the best director,,” he said.

Balu added he was drawn by the magic of cinema while watching, as a young boy, the shoot of David Lean's classic ‘Bridge on the River Kwai' in Sri Lanka, where he was born and brought up. The spell has not been broken.

Not everyone can be a mass hero. Before you even think of enrolling in an acting school or training to be an actor, ask yourself : “Are you God ?” The answer has to be “Yes, I am.” If not, quit right away, you'll never make it.

2. Even before you sign your first film, make sure the city is flooded with larger-than-life cut-outs of you, ideally in white, smiling, with your arms folded, greeting your subjects with great humility from up there. These must contain the title you have conferred upon yourself, preferably in Tamil. Everything from Top Star, Little Star to Ultimate Star have been taken, and most combinations of Puratchi, Makkal, Tamizhan, Kalaignan, Thalapathy have been done to death. Hint: Look to the planets for inspiration — Mercury Nayagan.

3. Remember Thou Shalt Not Sign any film where you will be slapped by any other character in the film. Thou Shalt Not Play second fiddle to anyone in the film. Thou Shalt Only Portray the invincible, and your contract must entitle you to 30 per cent of your screen-time dedicated to walking in slow motion, 30 per cent towards dispatching 10 stuntmen (all heavier than you) miles away with just one kick, 30 per cent to heroines dancing around you, singing your praise or people showering petals on you as you walk by, and another 10 per cent for an appropriate build-up and introduction of Your Majesty… Cameras ought to go around you at least a hundred times in the film.

4. Ensure your worshippers have started work on a temple for you, and if you've not been able to convince them, announce that you've requested the confederation of all your fan clubs and welfare associations to contribute that amount to charity. And, that you have no intentions of entering politics ‘for now'. Simultaneously, your films must lash out against the establishment and showcase you as a messiah. It goes without saying that your movie title has to be named after you (ideally some avatar of God), and all characters in the film should refer to you by that name.

5. You need to brand yourself with a mudra — a gesture with your finger, easy for anyone to replicate. (Tip: All fingers, except the little one, are good, and if you can pull off the Vulcan salute, live long and prosper) Use this in your films and in reality, so it blurs the line between your real self and reel avatar. The day the first guy on the road greets you with that mudra, your transition from Human to Divine is complete.

Aarya-Lingusamy joining hands again for Mugamudi

Mugamudi was supposed to be the first South Indian super-hero film, which was to be produced by Ayngaran International with a Surya in the lead. Due to some unavoidable issues, Mysskin and Ayngaran International parted ways. Thus, the movie was shelved. Now, the buzz is that the movie bosses are re-considering the film with Aarya in the lead.

Buzz up!According to the sources, Aarya was awestruck listening to the narration and instantly promised Mysskin regarding finding a good producer for this film. Since, Aarya is working with director Lingusamy for the film Vettai, he has somehow managed to impress him with this project.

Now, we hear that Lingusamy will be producing Mugamudi under the banner of Tirupathi Brothers. It is worth mentioning that director Balaji Sakthivel has signed Aarya for another film, which is expected to be produced under the same banner.

Namitha's Ilaignan gets a huge ship!

Art director Thotta Tharani is erecting a huge set of a ship for Namitha and Pa. Vijay starrer film Ilaignan. He is giving final touches to it in Sriperumbudur, Chennai.

Buzz up!The look and feel of the ship takes back us to pre-independence period. He is recreating the royal windjammer sail-boat of British Raj era. Soon, the scenes involving Namitha and other actors will be shot on this set.

The movie is the screen adaptation of M.Karunanidhi's Thaai Kaviyam novel, which is set in the 1940s. Namitha plays the role of a baddie in the film. It also features Meera Jasmine, Khushboo, Ramya Nambeesan in the key roles. Suresh Krishna is directing the movie and S. Martin is the producer

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has decided not to release the first part of Raktha Charithram on October 22 because the makers are not keen on revealing Surya's look, prior to the release of the Tamil version. Telugu and Hindi version of Raktha Charithram – 1 are scheduled to hit the screens on October 22, while the Tamil version will release along with the second part on November 19.

Buzz up!Sources close to Ram Gopal Varma has revealed that Surya will be appearing during the last 10 mins of the first part. If it gets released in Tamil Nadu, it will gradually reveal the look of film. Dayanidhi Azhagiri of Cloud Nine Productions has also agreed to this as he felt that the Tamil version shouldn’t been affected by these releases.The Tamil version is nothing but sleekly edited versions of both the first and the second part.

However, Vivek Oberoi has a huge fan following in Tamil Nadu, primarily for his kind gesture of adopting an entire village of Tamil Nadu that was affected by Tsunami in 2004. Although, Ram Gopal Varma hasn’t made any Tamil film, still there is a large section of die hard fans for his movies. With Surya and Priyamani as the main highlighting factors of the Tamil version, Dayanidhi Azhagiri plans for a bigger release of Raktha Charithram.

Although the songs of the Tamil version were released a couple of weeks earlier, none of them have become popular due to the lack of publicity.

Priyamani life to change from tomorrow?

It is a big day for three persons tomorrow.

Other than Ram Gopal Varma, who is waiting for a hit after a sting of flop films like Rann, it is a big day for Vivek Oberoi and Priyamani too!

The last few films of Vivek also have been big flops and he hopes to get back into the top range after this film (if it becomes a hit).

On the other hand, Priyamani's debut film in Hindi, Raavan, was a big flop.

Speaking to a news channel today, she said that she is keeping all her hopes on this film.

"If this film becomes a hit, then I would get a pan-Indian recognition" she said.

தமிழில் பெயர் வைக்கப்படும் திரைப்படங்களுக்கு மட்டுமே, கேளிக்கை வரிவிலக்கு அளிக்கப்படும் என்று அரசின் சார்பில் ஏற்கனவே அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அந்த அடிப்படையில் கூடுமானவரையில், பெயர்ச் சொல்லாகவாவது படத்தின் பெயர் தமிழில் அமைந்துள்ள திரைப்படங்களுக்கு வரிவிலக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. உதாரணங்கள்: சிவாஜி, ஏகன், பாஸ் (எ) பாஸ்கரன், கோவா, எந்திரன் போன்ற திரைப்படங்களாகும்.

Actor Jai's upcoming flick Kanimozhi, which marks the Kollywood debut of Shazahn Padamsee (of Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009) fame), is ready and will grace theatres on November 26, 2010.

Kanimozhi, produced by Siva of Amma Creations, is directed by Sripathi (a former associate of Venkat Prabhu). Satheesh Chakravarthy has composed the music while Chidambaram is the cinematographer.

Shazahn Padamsee is the daughter of singer Sharon and theatre impresario Alyque Padamsee.

After the stupendous success of Rajinikanth's Endhiran, size does seem to matter in Kollywood. The producers of the Shankar-directed Rs 150 crore extravaganza had a glitzy audio launch in KL, revealed the first look of the film in Mumbai and finally held a trailer launch in Chennai .

The movie went on to register a jaw-dropping Rs 61 crore gross in three weeks from the overseas market. Says G Dhananjayan, producer and trade analyst, "Endhiran's marketing opened the doors for Tamil cinema which was lagging behind Hindi films in the overseas territory."

The way the Rajinikanth film was showcased across the globe has set the ball rolling. The latest we hear is that producer Udhayanidhi Stalin is going for a big audio launch of his Kamal Haasan starrer Manmadhan Ambu in Singapore. Meanwhile, producer Ganesh is also holding an audio launch of his multi-starrer Vaanam in London, with music director Yuvan Shankar Raja releasing a single track specially for the event. The audio launch also opens a new revenue stream for the producers as they can sell the television rights of the event to entertainment content-starved channels.

Says London-based K Karunamoorthy, veteran Tamil film distributor, " Endhiran has received a stupendous response and has seen a manifold success and reach in the box-office. It has created a big buzz for Tamil cinema."

Recently, Vijay — after the failure of Sura — found that his new film Kavalan was snapped up by a new overseas distribution firm at a record prize! Currently, Manmadhan Ambu is the hottest film in the international circuit as Kamal Haasan is rated as the second most popular star in the overseas market.

Tamil films are getting bigger in the domestic market too. In Chennai, after Endhiran released in 40-plus screens, even small films like Va — Quarter Cutting and Mynaa are releasing in more than a dozen screens. Says Abirami Ramanathan, exhibitor and distributor, "This Deepavali, I'm releasing Uthamaputhiran and Va —Quarter Cutting in 16 and 15 screens respectively in Chennai city. The idea is to cash in on the festival season and if both the content in these films matches the hype, all of us will be smiling."

A top Kollywood star, who has a major release coming up, concludes, "The marketing of films have undergone a sea change after Endhiran. Earlier, a big Rajinikanth film like Sivaji hardly had any promotions. Today, the rules of the game have changed as even Rajinikanth needs to be aggressively marketed! So, lesser mortals like us have to work out innovative marketing plans if we want to be successful at the BO."

The shooting of the Jai-Shahzahn Padamsee starrer Kanimozhi was wrapped up sometime ago but the producers – T Shiva and Sona – decided to keep the film on hold. Enquiries in Kollywood revealed that the producers wanted the Endhiran fever to die down a bit so that their film Kanimozhi could get a good reception from the audiences.

The film is now slated for a release on November 26th, so that the Diwali releases would also be safely out of the way. The film is directed by Sripathi Rangasamy who had apprenticed under Venkat Prabhu.

RAJINI'S DRAVIDIAN MOVIE

The success meet of Mynaa was held at the Park Sheraton Hotel in Chennai today. The cast and crew were all present at this function. Udhayanidhi Stalin, under whose production banner the movie was released, spoke highly about the movie. He said that the movie was released with 160 prints initially but owing to popular demand, 40 more prints have been developed. "Due to outstanding public response, theatres are now showing 4 shows of Mynaa instead of two shows", he added.

Director Prabhu Solomon was ecstatic about the film's success. He said that his biggest compliment is when Rajinikanth spoke highly about the movie. He praised Thambi Ramaiyya's role in the movie and was fully in appreciation for the actor.

Rajini's letter

Rajini has sent a signed letter to the director of Mynaa Prabhu Solomon. He has mentioned that every man has a beast in his heart. Owing to society and our traditional values, we don't let others to see it from close. But it so happens that the beast unleashes itself in certain circumstances which is beyond the control of human mind. Since I have lived and grown among those kind of people in the society during my early days, I can easily relate myself with the movie. "I could see those characters I have confronted in my life in Mynaa", he has mentioned.

Praising the efforts of actors, he said that each actor and actress in the movie has done a brilliant job which is the evident in this movie. The highlight of the letter is when he mentions "Mynaa is a Dravidian movie. This movie is for every citizen of Tamil Nadu". These kind of movies are a rarity in Tamil cinema. It is like "Kurunji Malar", he feels.

About the crew, he states that Prabhu Solomon has done a very commendable job in directing this movie. Sukumar's camera ensures that the movie is real and not otherwise. The cinematography is a visual treat. D Imman's music complements the movie's intentions very well. He praised the efforts of all crew members, including Thambi Ramaiyya, and said that they have given a visual feast to the audience. Rajini also appreciated the efforts of Shalom studios, AGS and Udhayanidhi Stalin to make this movie a success.

Rajini's only regret, after watching Mynaa, is that he could not act in the movie. "I would have been happy if I had acted in a few scenes in Mynaa", he concludes.

Shankar was keen on casting Rajini in Robot but the Superstar declined the offer thinking that he is being offered the villain role as there was a talk at that time that Shah Rukh Khan is being considered to play the lead role.

அது போலத்தான் இந்த படத்துக்கும் சில தாமதங்கள் எற்பட்டது. 16 வயதினிலே தடைகளை மீறி ஜெயித்தது போல் இப்படமும் பெரும் வெற்றி பெறும்.

முதல் படம் செய்த போது கூட நான் பயந்ததில்லை. இந்த படம் தாமதம் ஆனதால் லேசாக பயம் வருகிறது.

பொதுவாக என் படங்களில் தமிழ் பேச தெரிந்தவர்களைத்தான் கதாநாயகியாக்குவேன். என்னுடன் நடித்த ஊர்வசி, சரிதா, ஷோபனா போன்றோருக்கு தமிழ் தெரிந்ததால் சிறப்பாக பணியாற்ற முடிந்தது. அது போல் சித்து படத்தில் நடிக்கும் நாயகி சாந்தினிக்கும் தமிழில் பேசத் தெரியும் சிறப்பாக நடித்துள்ளார். ராஜேஷ், கஞ்சா கருப்பு, போன்றோரும் நடித்துள்ளனர். மகன், தந்தை சென்டி மெண்ட், காதல், போன்ற அம்சங்கள் இதில் இருக்கும்.

ஏன் இப்படி?

இந்தப் படத்தைத்தான் பெரிதாக நம்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார் லேகா வாஷிங்டன். படத்துக்கு செய்யப்பட்ட விளம்பரம் , ரிலீஸ் செய்யப்பட்ட விதம் எல்லாமே அவரது எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பை ஏகத்துக்கும் கிளறிவிட்டிருந்தது.

கோடம்பாக்கத்தில் மழை மாதிரி கொட்டோ கொட்டென்று கொட்டுகிறது படங்கள். ஆனால் அவற்றில் சில படங்கள் தவிர, மற்றெல்லா படங்களும் மண்டைக்குள் இறங்கி மனசுக்குள் போவதில்லை. 'மகிழ்ச்சி' கண்களையும் மனசையும் பிழிய பிழிய நனைக்கிறது! படம் முடிந்து வெளியே வரும்போது கைகள் அனிச்சை செயலாக போன் செய்யும்.... அவரவர் அக்கா தங்கைகளுக்கு!

அக்காவுக்கும் தம்பிக்கும் அப்படியரு பாசம். கண்காணாத இடத்துக்கு போய் கண்ணை கசிக்கிகிட்டு நிக்கறதுக்கு, இங்கேயே உள்ளூர் மாப்பிள்ளைக்கு கட்டிக் கொடுத்தா கண்ணு முன்னாடி பார்த்துக்கலாம் என்பது தம்பியின் விருப்பம். சோறு போடுற நிலத்தை விற்று வெகு ஜோராக கட்டிக் கொடுக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் போனவள் அதே வேகத்தில் கணவனால் விரட்டியடிக்கப்படுகிறாள். வாழாவெட்டி அக்காவுக்காக தன் காதலையே தியாகம் செய்கிறான் தம்பி. வீட்டிலிருக்கிற அக்காவுக்காக அவன் பார்க்கிற வேறொரு மாப்பிள்ளை யார்? அதனால் என்ன நிகழ்ந்தது என்பதுதான் (புரட்சிகரமான) முடிவு.

டைரக்டர் கௌதமன்தான் அந்த பாசக்கார தம்பி. 'அக்கா...' என்று அழைக்கும்போதே அரை லிட்டர் கண்ணீர் வழிகிறது அவர் கன்னத்தில். (தாய்மாருங்க ஏரியாவுல சாருக்கு தனி நாற்காலி இருக்கப்போய்...) மறுபடியும் அக்காவையும் அத்தானையும் சேர்த்து வைத்துவிட அவர் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் அக்கறையும் பொறுமையும் சகிப்புத்தன்மையும் இப்போதும் கிராமபுறங்களில் கண்முன்னே நடப்பவைதான்! இன்னொரு பக்கம் அஞ்சலிக்கும் இவருக்குமான காதல். அடடா... இந்த ஜோடிகளின் சேட்டையை ரசித்துக் கொண்டேயிருக்கலாம். சண்டைக்காட்சிகளில் கௌதமனின் ரோல் மாடல் விஜயகாந்த் போலிருக்கிறது. ஹ்ம்ம்ம்... நடக்கட்டும்!

அதென்னவோ தெரியவில்லை, கௌமனுக்கு மட்டும் தாராள தரிசனம் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் அஞ்சலி. அந்த ஊர் ஆற்றுத்தண்ணிக்கும் அத்தனை அதிர்ஷ்டம்! கௌதமனும் அஞ்சலியும் விழுந்து புரண்டு கொஞ்சியிருக்கிறார்கள் அதில். அஞ்சலியிடமும் வழக்கத்திற்கு மாறான துள்ளல். காதல் கைகூடாமல் இன்னொருவருக்கு மனைவியான பின்பு தனது கைக்குழந்தையுடன் வந்து அத்தானுக்கு அட்வைஸ் செய்கிற அந்த காட்சி நிஜமாகவே ஃபீலிங்ஸ் ஆஃப் லவ்!

நடித்ததே அவ்வளவுதானா, அல்லது அதற்குள் சிறைக்குள் போய்விட்டாரா தெரியவில்லை. சீமானின் காட்சிகளில் அளவுக்கு மீறிய சிக்கனம். முதல் காட்சியிலேயே அப்பாவை ரோட்டில் புரட்டியெடுக்கிறார். அப்புறம்தான் தெரிகிறது அது எதற்காக என்று. வருகிற சிற்சில காட்சிகளிலும் சீமான் போதிப்பது அடிக்கு அடி தத்துவத்தைதான்.

கௌதமனின் அக்காவாக நடித்திருக்கிறார் கார்த்திகா. இந்த கதைக்காகவே பிறந்த மாதிரி அப்படியரு பக்குவம் அவரிடம். தம்பிக்காக கொதிக்கிற எண்ணை சட்டியில் கையை விட்டு வடை எடுக்கிற காட்சி நினைத்தே பார்க்க முடியாத சென்ட்டிமென்ட் டச். இவருக்கு தாலி கட்டிய கொடூரனாக சம்பத். தியேட்டர் பக்கம் போகும்போது செவுள் பத்திரம்ணே... (ஆமாம், அடுத்த தெருவில் குடியிருக்கும் இவரை பற்றி தெரியாமலா பெண் கொடுப்பார்கள்?)

நடிகர் நடிகைகள் தேர்வில் அப்படியரு நேர்த்தி. அதிலும் சீமான், கௌதமனுக்கு அப்பாவாக நடித்திருக்கிற நடிகர்கள் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கிறார்கள். கஞ்சா கருப்புக்கு பாட்டி விருந்து கொடுக்கிற காட்சி ஒன்று தியேட்டரையே குலுக்கி எடுக்கிறது. "பத்து நாளா வாயில ஊறப்போட்ட பாக்கு, ஒரே கடியுல உடைச்சிட்டியே" என்று பாட்டி ஆச்சர்யப்படும்போது கருப்பின் எக்ஸ்பிரஷன்... ஆஹ்ஹ்ஹ்

செழியனின் ஒளிப்பதிவில் அத்தனை காட்சிகளும் அருமை. இருந்தாலும் ஒரு காட்சி உயிர். தனது நிலத்தை விற்பதற்கு முன் காற்றில் சலசலக்கும் பச்சை நாற்றுகளை ஆசையோடு வருடிக்கொடுக்கும் அந்த விவசாயியும், அந்த பசுமையும் அப்படியே கண் முன்னே நிற்கிறது.

படம் துவங்குவதற்கு முன் சொல்லப்படும் வரலாற்று கதை ஒன்றும், அதற்கு வரையப்பட்ட ஓவியமும், பின்னணியில் ஒலிக்கும் பச்சியப்பனின் குரலும் இந்த படத்தின் மிக முக்கியமான நிமிடங்கள். வார்த்தெடுத்த கௌதமனுக்கு ஸ்பெஷல் அப்ளாஸ்!

வித்யாசகரின் இசையில் ஒன்றிரண்டு பாடல்கள் இனிமை. ஆனால் அது மட்டும் போதாதே...

நமக்கு நெருக்கமானவர்களின் பின் மண்டையில் செல்லமாக தட்டி, "போய் மொதல்ல படத்தை பாரு" என்று சொல்லலாம்! ஏனென்றால் 'மகிழ்ச்சி'யால் நாமும், நமது உறவுகளும் நிறைய வேண்டிய நேரமிது!

Popular South filmmaker Gautham Menon who made his Bollywood debut with Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein was all set to make a comeback to Hindi films. The filmmaker was to remake his superhit South movie 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaya'.

Unfortunately the project seems to be shelved as Prateik Babbar, who was to play the lead in the Hindi remake, has walked out of the project for reasons unknown. Also there were some casting issues with the female lead. With the makers unable to find replacements for the lead actors, it seems like there is still some time before which Gautham Menon could make his Bollywood comeback

என் 19 வயசு பையன் கூட நேற்று சினிமாவை பற்றி பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். அவன் நிறைய விஷயங்களை அனலைஸ் பண்ணி பேசுவான். தமிழ்சினிமாவின் டேர்ன் ஓவர் ஆயிரம் கோடியை தாண்டும்னு அவன் ஒரு புள்ளிவிபரம் சொன்னான். திண்டுக்கல் பகுதியில் நடக்கும் கிரானைட் பிசினஸ் இதைவிட நாலு மடங்குதான் அதிகம் என்பது அவன் சொன்ன புள்ளிவிபரம் இன்று பண வசதியுள்ள நிறைய பேர் பேமஸ் ஆகணும்னு சினிமாவுக்கு வர்றாங்க. ஆனால் கவுதம் மேனன் போன்ற ஒரு சிலர்தான் இந்த சினிமாவை நேசிச்சு வர்றாங்க. பணம் இருந்தா மட்டும் புகழ் கிடைச்சிடாது. அதை வச்சு நல்ல படங்களை கொடுக்கலைன்னா அதுவே 'இன் பேமஸ்' ஆயிடும் என்றார் சுஹாசினி.

இன்று சினிமா தென் தமிழகத்தைதான் மையம் கொண்டிருக்கு. ஆனால் சென்னையையும் இங்குள்ள வாழ்க்கையையும் அழகா பிரதிபலிக்கிறது கவுதம் மேனனும் என் கணவர் மணிரத்னமும்தான் என்று கூடுதலாகவும் ஒரு விஷயத்தை சொல்லி அமர்ந்தார்.

Year 2010 has been a booming
year for Tamil cinema with 150
films hitting the screens. This is
the highest ever in the history of
Tamil cinema, says industry trade
pundits.

According to ‘Film News’
Anandan, “It is a landmark year
in the history of Tamil cinema
with 150 straight releases and
42 dubbed releases.

On the face
of it, our cinema is booming, but
95 per cent of these films have
been produced by new
production houses which have
come up in the last three years.

Veteran producers have gone
into a shell as filmmaking has
changed drastically.”

However, the situation has not
been that bright at the box office
as only a handful of films
managed to garner profits while
the rest faded away after a few
shows. The industry is eagerly
waiting to find out what 2011
has in store for them with a slew
of big budget films lined up for
release.

“கடந்த மாதம் சென்னை காமராஜர் அரங்கில் நடந்த என் புதிய நாவலான ‘தேகம்’ வெளியீட்டு விழாவுக்கு பேச்சாளர்களில் ஒருவராக மிஷ்கினை அழைத்திருந்தேன். அந்த விழாவில் மிஷ் கின் பேசும்போது, என் நாவலை சரோஜாதேவி புத்தகம் என்றும்,யாரும் அதை வீட்டில் வைத்துப் படிக்க முடியாது என்றும் சொன்னார்.ஆனால்,ஏன் இப்படியொரு முடிவுக்கு வந்தார் என்பதை விளக்கவில்லை.

இதோடு நிறுத்தியிருந்தால் கூடப் பரவாயில்லை;அது இலக்கிய விவாதமாகப் போயிருக்கும்.ஆனால், மிஷ்கின் நானும் அவரும் அந்தரங்கமாகப் பேசிக் கொண்டதை எல்லாம் அவ்வளவு பெரிய பொது-மேடையில் போட்டு உடைத்தார். அதில் 99 சதவிகிதம் பொய் வேறு.‘நான் வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்தால் ரெமி மார்ட்டின் இருக்கிறதா என்று கேட்பார்’என்று சொன்னார். ஆனால், நடந்தது என்னவோ இதற்கு நேர் எதிர்.

மிஷ்கின் என்னை இரவு 9 மணிக்கு மேல்தான் அழைப்பார். போனால் பத்தரை மணிக்கு மேல் ரெமி மார்ட்டின் வெள்ளமாய் ஓடும்.காலை நான்கு மணி வரை போகும் பேச்சு. காலையில் பால்காரர் பால் போட வரும் போதுதான் வீடு திரும்புவேன்.என் மனைவி அவந்திகா தலையில் அடித்துக் கொள்வாள்.

இவர் அடிக்கடி அழைத்து,நான் அடிக்கடி குடிப்பது எனக்கு ஒத்து வரவில்லை. பல காரியங்கள் கெட்டுப் போயின. அதனால் இரவு ஒன்பது மணிக்கு மேல் மிஷ்கினிடமிருந்து அழைப்பு வந்தால் போனை எடுப்பதையே தவிர்க்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். பிறகு, இந்த வம்பே வேண்டாம் என்று குடிப்பதையே நிறுத்தினேன்.

மிஷ்கின் ஓய்வெடுப்பதற்காக நியூசிலாந்து சென்று வந்த போது, ‘அங்கே எதுவும் நடந்ததா?’ என்று நான் கேட்டேனாம். அதாவது, ‘மேட்டர்’ என்ற பொருள் படும்படி சொன்னார். தயவுசெய்து சொல்லுங்கள், இரண்டு நண்பர்கள் மிக அந்தரங்கமாகப் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்ததை இப்படி பொதுமேடையில் சொன்னால் யாருடைய அந்தரங்கம்தான் இங்கே புனிதமானதாக இருக்கும்? அப்படிக் கேட்டேன் தான். ஏன் கேட்டேன்? நான் கிராமத்தில் இருந்து வந்தவன். மணநாள் முடிந்து மறுநாள் அங்கே ஒவ்வொரு தாயும் தன் மகளைப் பார்த்து, ‘மாப்பிள்ளை எப்படி நடந்து கொண்டார்?’ என்று சூசகமாகக் கேட்பாள். ‘முதலிரவு எப்படிக் கழிந்தது?’ என்று பொருள். அது மாதிரி ஒரு பிரியத்தில்தான், ‘தனியாக வாழ்கிறாயே நண்பா; இங்கே நீ ஒரு நடிகையிடம் ஹலோ சொன்னாலே கிசுகிசு வந்து விடுமே? நியூசிலாந்து சென்றாவது உன் காமம் தணித்தாயா?’ என்று சங்கேதமான மொழியில் கேட்டேன். என் சொந்த மகனாக இருந்தாலும் 35 வயது வரை அவன் தனியாக வாழ்ந்தால், அப்படித்தான் கேட்பேன். அப்படிக் கேட்காதவன் நல்ல தகப்பன் அல்ல என்பது என் கருத்து.

என் வருத்தம் எல்லாம் இதுதான்.அந்தரங்கத்தை இப்படி பொதுவில் பேசலாமா? அது தர்மமா?

அந்தரங்க விஷயங்களை இப்படி பொதுவில் அலசலாம் என்றால், மிஷ்கின் என்னிடமும் நண்பர்களிடமும் இளையராஜா, கமல்ஹாசன் மற்றும் தன் சக இயக்குநர்கள் பற்றிச் சொன்னதை எல்லாம் நான் வெளியே சொல்லலாமா? இவர் ராஜாவிடம் மூன்று மணி நேரம் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தாராம். குடிக்கத் தண்ணீர் கூடத் தரவில்லையாம். ஆனால், அவர் மட்டும் குடித்துக்கொண்டே இருந்தாராம்.இவர் வாய் விட்டுக் கேட்டதற்கு, ‘இது என் தண்ணீர்’ என்று சொன்னாராம். இளையராஜாவின் மருமகன் சபரி என் நண்பர்.அவர் அழைப்பின் பேரில் நவராத்திரியின் போது ராஜா வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றேன்.அட்டகாசமான அக்காரவடிசல் போட்டு விருந்து கொடுத்தார்கள். ஆனால் இவர் இப்படிச் சொல்கிறார்.

Deepika Padukone to pair up with Rajini
The Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone is heading to conquer Tamil Cinema. The actress has been offered female lead in Superstar Rajinikanth's next flick 'Rana'. But the actress is yet to give green signal.

After making her debut with SRK and working with all the top actors in Bollywood, Deepika Padukone is headed to conquer the South. She has now been offered a film opposite none other than superstar Rajnikanth.

Deepika had a meeting with the makers of this film last week and she loved the script. Deepika, who happens to be a huge fan of Rajnikanth's, finds herself in a big dilemma though: her date diaries are saturated.

She is now trying to figure out how to commit to this film. Apparently, the actress is extremely keen on working with him, despite her choc-a-bloc schedule.

Our source said, "Deepika has been offered the film and a meeting with its producers also went off well. The film has Rajnikanth in a double role. The makers felt that Deepika was perfect for the lead role and that she would fit the character very well.

Unfortunately, the producers of the film want to take it on floors this year and Deepika has her hands full with Aarakshan, Desi Boys and a new film with Saif Ali khan to be directed by Homi Adajania apart from a few other projects.

Now she is trying hard to adjust her dates so she doesn't miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with Rajnikanth."

When contacted, Deepika Padukone said, "I am really honoured to be approached to act with Rajnikanth."

The actress's spokesperson however was quick to add, "We have been approached but it is too early to talk about it. We need to work on dates as many films are in combination with a lot of senior actors. It is not an easy decision. Of course we would like to be part of Rajnikanth's film. It is a huge honour."

Family cartel seems to rule Kollywood

Film and politics are the Siamese twins of Tamil Nadu! And it is no exaggeration. For, the political history of this Dravidian land has been a witness to this strange phenomenon.

Nobody would have ever thought, though, an extended family could have a monopolistic sway over the entire celluloid industry. It is difficult for people outside the state to even imagine the vicelike grip this family has over the tinsel world. From production to distribution and from marketing to managing theatres, the young scions of the Karunanidhi clan have come to dictate every aspect of film making. So much so that even major production houses have almost stopped making movies.

No wonder, this has left everyone in Kollywood fuming but not even a few dare speak out. Ever since the Maran brothers and the grandsons of the DMK patriarch entered the scene in a big way, the rules of the game have been altered, threatening many a producer. No one is in doubt that the reign of these wonder kids is not possible without political clout and state patronage.
Hence, all that they could do is to be passive spectators of this spectacle. Well, it was Kalanithi Maran's 'Sun Pictures' which bankrolled the Rajnikant starrer Enthiran, reportedly the country's costliest movie till date.

But the way the film was distributed had come in for much criticism. From arm- twisting other producers to not release their films to hiring almost all the good cinema halls and deploying the state police in large numbers for anti- piracy searches, it had all the makings of a state- sponsored blockbuster.

Kalanithi Maran has only a few years of engagement in film making! Others from the clan who have stepped into the arena as producers are Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Deputy Chief Minister and the DMK's heir apparent M K Stalin and Durai Dayanidhi, son of Union Minister M K Alagiri.

Not to be left behind, another son of the patriarch, M K Thamizharasu is promoting his son as a hero. From superstar Rajnikant to the versatile Kamal Hassan, every selling hero is said to be on their payroll. And, it goes without saying that any big budget movie cannot but come out under the banner of any one of the family- owned production houses - 'Sun Pictures' of Kalanithi Maran, 'Red Giant Movies' of Udayanidhi and 'Cloud Nine Movies' of Durai Dayanidhi. Moreover, the once powerful Tamil Film Producers Council is now run by a DMK clique that does the family's bidding.

To top it all, the octogenarian, Karunanidhi who had been writing scripts only when he was in the opposition, has now taken to it as a full time venture, ignoring the fact that all his films continue to be miserable flops at the box office. But why certain producers continue to finance his films is another story! Well, only recently the patriarch declared his assets, which is according to him, is no more than Rs 6.2 crores in cash besides his residence.

How then could his family members have found the resources for bank- rolling so many films? To this the wily script writer has a readymade answer: "Through hard work and intelligence". But the reality on the ground seems to suggest otherwise.

Every other income-tax search operation against a film industry personality is attributed to the hidden hand of the Karunanidhi family. Even those with political ambitions are getting marginalised in the film industry. Like the popular hero Vijay. The family hegemony has spawned widespread resentment in the film industry and how this resentment plays out in the coming assembly polls would be something quite interesting to watch.

7 Kinds of “Hits” in the film industry-Allu Sirish
Back in the day the difference between a hit, average & flop was clear. A hit meant that film that was seen & liked by a lot of people & collected good money. It usually collects 120-150% of the budget. A superhit film was one that did exceedingly well at boxoffice. It was quite simple to know which movie was a hit & which wasn’t.

But modern-day film business is so complex, that it is very hard to classify a movie. Also the term “hit” has become vague and relative. Almost like the idea of ‘good’. What might seem ‘good’ to one person or segment, might seem ‘bad’ to another. Likewise, a film may be or seem like a hit to some people or segments, while it is not one to some. Confused?

Read on. Not all ‘hits’ in the industry are the same. They come in 7 varieties. But what the industry needs today is the last one I mentioned, the good old “hits” or ‘universal hits’ as they’re known today. Though, I have written this keeping Telugu Cinema in mind, the same applies to Bollywood & Tamil cinema.

Producer safe, distributors loss :

The movie’s producer makes the film with his money, adds a handsome margin and sells it off to distributors. Regardless of the movie’s performance at boxoffice he is “safe”. In most cases even if the movie collects well, because of the high prices it was sold for, it won’t be financially profitable for the distributors.

Distributor safe, producer loss :

This is a rare instance but does happen often. Often, the movie goes over-budget or was shot was beyond its market. In that case, the producer sells it off for less than the movie’s budget and limits his loss. Unless the movie goes onto be a smashing blockbuster, its unlikely he will recoup his costs. If the movie does ‘well enough’, the distributors who invested in the film would make small sums, where as the Producer would go home with a loss.

For ex : A film that released in 2010, was made on a budget of 14 crores. The producer could sell the theatrical rights of the movie only for 8 crores. He raised another 4 crores from satellite, music, overseas & home-video rights. In all he made 12 crore of business and took a hit of 2 crores. When the film released, it did well and recovered a little over 8 crores at boxoffice. So the trade terms this film a ‘hit’, while in reality it was a loss-making film for the Producer.

Media hit/perception hit :

Hits of this variety are more frequent in our industry offlate. The movie usually is a backed with a high-decibel campaign. If the word-of-mouth is even slightly positive, the producer launches a big campaign trumpeting its success by hosting press meets, publishing inflated collections in advertisements and having “paid coverage” in magazines, newspapers & television. In most cases, the film would attained break-even or modest profits, but it’s perceived to be a big hit.

While the intelligent section of the audience doesn’t buy the hype, most people are gullible and actually believe the movie is a huge hit. A lot of producers in our industry are not serious filmmakers. They’re here for the kicks, glamour or fame.They are happy living with the “hit” tag, than really making money from the films. Hence we see more of “perception hits” these days.

ROI Hit :

This is the “Return on Invesment” hit. Some films might not collect a big sum at the boxoffice or enjoy a great word-of-mouth, but because of the low cost it was made or sold for, it’s a financially successful project for all or most parties involved. Another case for an ROI hit, is that the film has a A-list star and opened with great hype in hundreds of screens. Though, the response might be mixed due to the superb openings, the movie would have recovered its cost. This is reason distributor’s have craze for movies featuring big actors as they have the crowd-pulling capacity.

Sleeper Hit :

Some films when they release have an moderate opening & decent word-of-mouth. Usually, its expected such films don’t last long at boxoffice. But these films, either due to the theme or the loyal audience the star commands makes small sums of money every week, over many weeks. Though in terms of buzz & perception it’s not seen as a big hit, the movie ultimately would have made huge money at boxoffice.

Territorial Hit :

Some films perform inconsistently at the boxoffice. Though overall the movie is not counted as a success, some films perform better than expected in certain territories. Usually, the while producer or other distributors might have lost money, the distributor from this one particular territory would have made money.

It’s usually because the hero of the film enjoys extra craze in that area, or because of the film’s theme. For ex : Sarkar Raj collected very well in Mumbai as it had ‘local relevance’ where the rest of India it under-performed. Usually, each hero has his bastion where has as edge over other heroes.

Also, certain types of films perform better in some areas. Love stories and family dramas tend to do better in Nizam, overseas & Karnataka. There are many instances where some films perform well only in certain territories. There are many instances when movie portals have rubbished film, which fared poorly overseas but went onto be blockbusters in India. This happens in Bollywood too.

Hit/Superhit/Blockbuster :

These are films which enjoy a good word-of-mouth, collect very well and are financially profitable to all the parties involved – producer, distributors & exhibitors. Like I said earlier, the industry needs more hits of this variety – a film that qualifies to be called a success on most counts.
