Im starting this thread with kaathirundhen kaNavaa a sweet solo by Sjanaki from 'Dharmapathini'.
http://tfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://tfmpage.com/songs/kaath.rm (http://tfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://tfmpage.com/songs/kaath.rm
)
The song should be for jeevitha (can someone confirm this). Lyrics has lot of VMs touch but not sure if he is the lyricist. Music is by IR.
This is what Mrs charumathi has to say about this song

Ramki
The songs sounds a lot like 'Pagalile oru nilavinai kanden' by SJ. Is that also Sriranjini raagam?
Eagerly waiting for the translations...

A rough translation is:
This song is set fully based on sriranjani raagam. Sriranjani is a 'panjama varja' (i.e. no 'Pa') raagam. It can be
noted that it's a janyam of the 22nd melakarta Karaharapriya. As for thaalam, it's set in Adi thaalam.
In the BGM, interestingly the first part is set in '1/2 idam' but the later part is in 'samam'. Excellent arrangement of instruments in the BGM and the sweet sriranjani swara 'kOrvai'-s reflect Ilayaraja's special touch.
The song interludes, lyrics and the rendition in janaki's mellifluous voice beautify this song further.

Thanks RR and Ramki and thanks for the translation. Able to appreciate the song better now.. Can an expert list other songs in Sriranjini (by IR and others) and comment how they are different?
Topics like this make me feel great about being a DF-er....

This is what Lakshminarayan Srirangam Ramakrishnan writes on sriranjani raagam
Talking about the panchama varjaya ragam of Karahapriya, that is , Sriranjani, probably Illayaraja was the best music director to use this wonderful raga. His first Sriranjani came as a tail bit in velli chalangaigal (kaadal ovium). It was a very fast bit sang by the chorus 'thannanthanimayil iru vizhi'. Even though 'velli chalangaigal' was tuned in Chandrakounse ragam, I don't know what made him give the tail bit to Sriranjani (a very strange guy, you know!) The second Sriranjani attempt came in naadavinodhangal in salangai oli. Even in this song he tuned the pallavi alone in Sriranjani, with charanam in Hamsaanandi. This is what I dislike in cinema music directors. Why can't they adhere to a single raga? Why do they have to change from pallavi to charanam? Illayaraja was the one who did best justice to carnatic music among modern music directors. But even he fell a prey to such deviations (from purist point of view) like changing the raga for each line in few songs. His best Sriranjani came in 'nadam ezhundadadi' in Gopura vaasalilae. Again, Yesudoss! It was really fantastic. Karthik had given a comic act in that song. Probably that song toppled M.S.V's best Sriranjani 'nadam enum kovililae..' Dit it? I would say yes.

Ramki: small correction. 'theenda theenda' is riti gowla. But this raga is close to sriranjani. They share the same notes (for this reason, these two are almost never taken up in the same concert), but riti gowla has a few spl prayogams that easily distinguish it from sriranjani.
Bharadhwaj did a (rather lowly) sriranjani in 'thinnaathe' (paarthen rasithen).

'vanakkam, pala murai sonnen' (avan oru sarithram)- another MSV gem.

Returning to 'kaathirunthen kanava', I think this song has distinct bageshri (hindustani counterpart of sriranjani) touches, though carnatic purists may not agree with me. So I tend to call this song as based on 'begeshriranjani' :)

RR me too thought the raaga was bagheshri(there are some similiraties between 'nilave ennidam nerungaadhe'(which i believe is in baghesri) and kaathirundhen kaNavaa)
Btw does anyknow remember if this song was in the movie? As far as i know 'naan thedum sevvandhi poovidhu' was the popular one. sumangali poojaiyidhu is another good song but not as popular as 'naan thedum'

The tune for this song reminds me of the second charanam of "thenmozhi endhan thenmozhi" - Mano's debut song in Solla thudikidhu manasu - a wonderful song spoiled by his voice.
Good pick, Ramki.

bageshri, Aaro: "Sa Ri2 Ga1 Ma1 Da2 Ni1 Sa"
Avro: "Sa Ni1 Da2 Pa Da2 Ni1 Da2 Ma1 Ga1 Ri2 Sa"
sriranjani Aaro: "Sa Ri2 Ga1 Ma1 Da2 Ni1 Sa"
Avro: "Sa Ni1 Da2 Ma1 Ga1 Ri2 Sa"
both of them 'karagapriya' janyam, I hope you got the point. So strictly appliying this swara, kaathirunthen kaNavaa definitely a sriranjani based, not bahesri.

From Mars: We analyzed 'vaa sagi' years ago and Y. Geetha (a carnatic specialist) settled it as sri ranjani. You can check the archives. (BTW, isn't it clear from the 'valluvan' line itself?)
I think 'anne anne' confusion arose because of the movie titles where they put it as Mano's first song. But Mano has himself said several times in interviews that 'thenmozhi' is indeed his first.

RR, I'll check it out :)
yup, the title said so, so I thought it as well. Did mano sing under name babu?

I think Mano was known as 'Nagoor Babu' (or something similar) in TeFM.
