Makkal thilagam as a producer and movie maker

How come you missed this out ?

You know, MGR was a defacto director for many years ever since he became a full fledged hero

He always had directors like Pa. Neelakantan and K.Shankar but they all have acknowledged openly that it was MGR who was behind the screen directing the movie.

MG used to handle everything

He was very active in song recording . I have heard that many times he was present even at the recording theatre to ensure that the song is recorded properly to his satisfaction

and today we are all enjoying his hardwork.

Every song of MGR is treat to watch.

I wish you all read Mr. Manisekaran's articles .

A.C Thiru did Anbe Vaa for MGR . After that, he was a full fledged Nadigar thilagam director.

Alrighty, we DO AGREE that there is no greatness in MGR's songs, without the work of Kannadaasan - MSV and all the other legends !!! Guys, when you create a poll, there has to be equal opportunity or choices for everybody to cast their opinion ... And especially when you have 4 positive options, there has to be atleast 1 option which negative ... Thereby, if you happen to count the number of votes, you MIGHT end up having the same number for all those positive options and that one negative option ... Otherwise, it looks like MY WAY OR FREEWAY !! :cry: :oops: :cry: :cry:

And that's exactly what I did when I created those options ... Well, the big assumption (mistake) I made was that, I thought MGR haters would not care to visit this thread ... For viziye kathai ezuthu, Sridhar wished to have it recorded in that beach side area and finished it also.
But on seeing the picuturisation, MGR firmly asked for another picturisation - DREAM SONG, as in his opinion, the normal beach side song WILL NOT SATISFY HIS FANS.

And what a dream song it turned out to be ultimately ! :D

How was your experience with M G Ramachandran when you sang for his film 'Urimai Kural'?

A :
One day, our late chief minister M G Ramachandran called me over and asked me to sing the song 'Vizhiye Kadhai Ezhudhu'. I was elated and thrilled. My happiness doubled when the song became a hit.

MGR is a mahaan. I came to know about him at a later stage. He not only gave importance to music but more to the art itself. His character was such that he turned even his foes into friends.

For example, at a time when he had difference of opinion with Kannadasan politically, he was not satisfied with the lyrics for a particular song. Finally, he himself suggested that Kannadasan be called to write the lyrics. Others around him were hesitant but MGR was firm. He told them that Kannadasan had no equal and asked them to approach him for the lyrics. Kannadasan also obliged and the song was 'Odum Megangale' for the film 'Aayirathil Oruvan'. Enmity vanished... and art gained importance

Jesudas fondly recollects thus his association with MGR

Kavignar Kannadasan originally wrote Nan andri yaar varuvar but it seems MGR was not happy with this and asked him to write another song and thats how Kan moodum was made !

IMO, the 2 form the best pair in screen and their chemistry was wonderful to watch !

When this movie was released , MGR was already 39 years but he will look like a 20 year old ! absolutely handsome.

Despite having seen the movie several times , it has the same spellbinding effect on viewers. Even though one may be too familiar with the twists in the plot, watching it on screen after a long time is an entertaining experience and has the same long lasting impact on us.

The reason could be Makkal thilagam . Though he was 40 years but look how young and energetic he will be !

Unlike other heroes, he was not that lucky in the sense, when he started playing hero roles, he was already 35 years.

This movie had all the elements of full fledged commercial entertainer – action, thriller and romance.

The story of the penniless youth, who accidentally chances upon a treasure in a cave belonging to 40 thieves headed by P.S.Veerappa.

So overnight, MGR will become a rich guy . Will be looked at with awe and some will also envy his meteoric rise to richness.
Before this great fortune, an ordinary MGR and Banumathy will be in love but the sudden change in the status of MGR will worry Banumathy for a while and she will gently question him whether the old love is still on or no longer.

But heart of hearts , she knew very well about the true love that MGR had over her .

So you can clearly see a very gentle Banumathy ( cheerful at heart ) during this memorable song

MAASILAA UNMAI KADHLE ……MARUMO SELVAM VANDHAPODHILE

The beginning words itself straight away answers the doubts of Banumathy !

That’s the beauty of this song !

With lovely piano preludes & partly flute , the song takes off in a very pleasant and mild manner

Banumathy innocently questions now : PESUM VAARTHAI UNMAI DHAANA. PEDHAYAI EIKA NEENGAL PODUM VESHAMA ?

MGR : Kannile minnum kadhalee. Kandumaa sandhegam endhan meedhile !

Saying this with a gentle smile and cheer on his face, MGR will touch the shoulder of Banumathy with all the sincerety and love of a true lover .

Still Banumathy was not convinced. So she moves a few feet away from MGR and takes up a bird and caresses it while she will also glance at MGR expecting him to cajole further.

So MGR now says : Nenjile neengidadhu pongum inbame

Banumathy once again : Nilaikuma indha ennam endha naalume ?

Now MGR pulls her by her hand and drags close to him and once again cajoles her.

By now Banumathy is fully convinced and with all the cheer and happiness she dances a bit and follows well with the flow of the song as MGR says now :

Unadhu roobame ullam thannil vaazudhe

For which Banumathy : Iniya sollinaal enadhu ullam magizudhe

Now both : Anbinale , ondru senrdhom , indru naam inba vaazvin elllai kaanuvom

A very simple situation of a lover doubting for a while whether her darling has changed due to new wealth for which a convincing reaction from him clears all the doubts. The song was quite neatly picturised .

Dakshinamurthy, a veteran was the composer for this first colour movie in tamil cinema. This entire song though may look simple but was excellently structured with sharp interludes ( all dominated by piano and flute only ) with occasional counter points also !

The starting song AZAGANA PONNUDHAAN was sung by Banumathy and another popular song of yesteryears.

The climax song EN AATAMELLAM ORU MEDAYILE DHANE , again by Banumathy was equally popular .

The scenes where in the treasure cave was shown were all will be seen with anxiety and restlessness especially when MGR enters the cave after the Veerappa group move out of it .

The words Andaka kasam…..Abu kaa hokum….. Thirandhidu seesey
And followed by moodidu seesey …… were anthem for school children for long .

The make up , the dressing, the sets were all very crafted out in Persian style

You can see MGR in a typical old Arabic cut banian and pyjama with a small cap also.

Banumathy was equal to it. She will resemble an arab beauty !

Rarely one can see a MGR movie dominated by a woman character and this movie was one such. Ofcourse, the original story cannot be changed no ?!

For every move of Veerappa and his men on MGR will be effectively countered by Banumathy but in the process some misunderstanding develops between the 2 before finally the climax song and the more than 10 minute sword fighting and horse chasing gives money’s worth for the viewer.

This movie also had M.G.Chakrapani , Makkal thilagam’s elder brother as a greedy person who pushes MG and gets the secret words to open and close the cave. Those scenes when he forgets the reopening of the cave and the resultant captivity by Veerappa and chopping off of his head were all well picturised and they have a good moral also.

T.R.Sundaram was a highly popular director / producer in the 40s, 50s and 60s and had also directed movies like 1000 thalai vangiya aboorva sinthamani, Baghdad thirudan, Mandirikumari, Burma Rani ( nice story three Indian airmen were forced to land in Burma and eventually free the country from Japanease occupation with the help of Indian resistance movement in the state. The plot revolves around a Rani (an Indian girl in Burma) who helps the airmen. T.R.Sundaram himself plays the role of a Japanese commander made-up to look like Hitler.)

T.R.Sundaram’s famous movie Manthirikumari we all know more through the 2 great songs Vaarai nee vaarai / Ulavum thendral katrinile. Kalaignar Mukaa wrote the dialogue and M.G.R and Padmini acted in this movie. A. Marudakasi wrote the lyrics and the music director was the great G. Ramanathan. The movie was shot near Salem in the hill resort of Yercaud, the film is based on an old story.T.R.Sundaram’s greatest contribution to tamil cinema was Nambiar. This movie introduced one of the most famous tamil screen villains, Nambiar.

Again, the same T.R.Sundaram also directed P.U.Chinnapa’s Uthamaputhiran ( which was played again by Nadigar thilagam )

THE ONCE FAMOUS MODERN THEATRES WAS FOUNDED BY T.R.SUNDARAM ONLY.

WHY I HAVE MENTIONED ABOUT T.R.SUNDARAM IS SIMPLY FOR THE BASIC REASON THAT HE WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDER MEMBERS AND LAID A STRONG FOUNDATION TO TAMIL CINEMA . AND I FEAR ALL SUCH GREAT PERSONALITIES’s NAMES MAY GET VANISHED UNLESS THERE IS A DATA BASE OR A PORTAL CREATED ABOUT THE PAST HISTORY OF TAMIL CINEMA.

A nice opportunity given by T.R.Sundaram to Makkal thilagam had given him enough confidence to continue with hero roles and also become the first super star of tamil cinema .

Back to the movie ……As mentioned earlier, this heroene dominated movie was nicely portrayed by Banumathy who displays plethora of her supreme talent . The intial scenes will show a casual young Banumathy . The middle part will show the love and the married life and also the smartness shown to counter the moves of Veerappa ….The final part will depict the bold and courageous wife who rescues her husband from the clutches of the villain by throwing all the 39 drums ( where the thieves will be inside to pounce on MGR ) onto the river. All very well made. Banumathy was immensely talented actress and she was called as ASTAVADHANI , a name given recognizing her knowledge over 8 languages which she spoke with consummate ease ! Some may feel that Banumathy’s voice was nasal but IMO, she possessed a melodious voice as good as A.M.Raja’s.

Alibaba and 40 thieves – elevated Puratchi Thalaivar to the status of a leading hero and soon offers flooed onto him for more and more hero characters. This movie set up a nice platform for Makkal thilagam .

A nice commercial movie and 100 % entertainer cum thriller.

I bet , even if this movie is shown today, it will make the coffers full .

After all MGR was the king of box office no !

Exactly ! Very true ! I think in those times LYRICS was given more importance. Pity that nowadays it has taken a back seat. I love MGR songs pretty much for the lyrics' content and the message within !

"ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்"

தமிழ்ப்படங்களில் 'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்' படத்துக்கு ஒரு தனிச்சிறப்பு எப்போதுமே உண்டு. தமிழ்ப்படங்களில் புராணப்படங்கள் ஏராளமாக வந்திருக்கின்றன. ராஜா ராணியை மையமாக வைத்து சரித்திரப் படங்களும் அதிக அளவில் வந்துள்ளன. சமூகப் படங்கள், மற்றும் நாட்டு விடுதலையை மையமாகக் கொண்ட படங்களும், அரசியல்வாதிகள் மற்றும் அதிகாரிகளின் அராஜகங்களை தோலுரித்துக் காட்டும் படங்களும் அதிகமாக வந்துள்ளன. நகைச்சுவைப்படங்களின் பட்டியலும் நீளம்தான். காதலை மையமாகக்கொண்ட படங்களோ திகட்டத் திகட்ட வந்திருக்கின்றன.

ஆனால் இதுவரையாகட்டும், கடற்கொள்ளையர்களை கதைக்கருவாகக்கொண்டு வெளிவந்த ஒரே படம் 'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்' மட்டுமே. கதை, வசன்ம், காட்சியமைப்புகள், பாடல்கள், இசை, பொருத்தமான நடிகர் நடிகையர் தேர்வு, பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சங்கள், கதையோடு ஒன்றிய கதைக்களங்கள் என, ஒரு வெற்றிப்படத்துக்குரிய எல்லா அம்சங்களும் ஒரு சேர அமைந்த படம் 'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்'.

இப்படத்தின் கதாநாயனான 'மக்கள் திலகம்' எம்ஜியார் ஏற்றிருந்த மணிமாறன் என்ற கதாபாத்திரம், ஒரு கைதேர்ந்த தையற்கலைஞர் அளவெடுத்து தைத்த சட்டை பொருந்துவதுபோல வெகு அருமையாகப் பொருந்தியது. அவர் திறமைக்குத் தீனி போடுவது போல கத்திச்சணடைக்காட்சிகள், அளவு மீறாத காதல் காட்சிகள், அவருக்கே பொருந்துவது போல அற்புதமாக அமைந்த பாடல்கள் என கனகச்சிதமாகச் சேர்ந்திருந்தது.

ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் படத்தின் கதைச்சுருக்கத்தைச் சொல்வது என்பது அவசியமில்லாத ஒன்று. அந்த அளவுக்கு தமிழ்நாட்டு மக்களுக்கு பழகிப்போன திரைப்படம் இது. இன்றைய இளம் தலைமுறையினரும் கூட அறிந்து கொள்ளும் விதமாக, இன்றைக்கும் ஏதாவது ஒரு தொலைக்காட்சி அலைவரிசையில் ஒளிபரப்பாகிக்கொண்டே இருக்கும் படம்.

ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் திரைப்படத்தை 'பத்மினி பிக்சர்ஸ்' சார்பில் பி.ஆர்.பந்துலு தயாரித்து இயக்கியிருந்தார். அதுவரை நடிகர் திலகத்தை வைத்து தொடர்ந்து படங்களை தயாரித்து வந்த இவர், முதல் முறையாக மக்கள் திலகத்தை வைத்து தயாரித்த படம் இது. மக்கள் திலகத்தை வைத்து பின்னாளில் நாடோடி, ரகசிய போலீஸ் 115, தேடிவந்த மாப்பிள்ளை போன்ற படங்களை தயாரிக்க பிளளையார் சுழி போட்ட படம் இது. பிளையார் சுழியே மாபெரும் வெற்றிச் சுழியாக அமைந்தது. (ஆனால் 'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்' பெற்ற மாபெரும் வெற்றியை அவரது பிந்தைய படங்கள் பெறவில்லை என்பதும் உண்மை).அவர் ஏன் நடிகர் திலகத்தை விட்டுப்போனார் என்பது (கிட்டத்தட்ட) ஊரறிந்த உண்மை.

பந்துலுவுக்கு எப்போதுமே ஒரு பழக்கம், ஒரு பிரமாண்டமான படத்தை அடுத்து ஒரு சாதாரண படத்தை தயாரிப்பார். இப்படித்தான்

'கட்டபொம்மனை' அடுத்து ஒரு 'சபாஷ் மீனா'
'கப்பலோட்டிய தமிழனை' அடுத்து ஒரு 'பலே பாண்டியா'
'கர்ணனை' அடுத்து ஒரு 'முரடன் முத்து'
'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவனை' அடுத்து ஒரு 'நாடோடி'

இது பந்துலுவின் பாணி.

1964ம் ஆண்டு பந்துலு தயாரித்த 'கர்ணனும்' சாண்டோ சின்னப்பா தேவர் தயாரித்த 'வேட்டைக்காரனும்' நேருக்கு நேர் மோதிக்கொள்ளும் நிலை வந்தது. அதில் வேட்டைக்காரன் கிட்டத்தட்ட எல்லா ஊர்களிலும் வசூலில் முந்தியது. மாபெரும் வெற்றிப்படமாக அமைந்தது. கர்ணனும் வெற்றிப்படமென்றாலும் கூட, அது ஒரு சாதாரண வெற்றிதான். அதன் பிரம்மாணடத்துக்கும், செலவுக்கும், நட்சத்திரக்கூட்டத்துக்கும், பாடல் காட்சிகளுக்கும் ஒப்பிடும்போது கர்ணன் கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு தோல்விப்படம் என்ற ரேஞ்சுக்கே அமைந்தது. தன்னுடைய படத்தை தோல்வியடையச்செய்த 'வேட்டைக்காரன்' படத்தை பந்துலுவும் பார்த்தார். அவருக்கு ஒன்று புரிந்தது. தன் படத்தில் இல்லாதது, தேவர் படத்தில் இருப்பது ஒன்றே ஒன்றுதான். அது எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.

ஒரு சாதாரண படத்திலேயே எம்ஜியார் என்ற ஒரு ஃபேக்டர் இருந்து தன்னுடைய பிரம்மாண்ட படத்தை அடித்து விட்டது என்று சொன்னால், அதே ஃபேக்டரை வைத்து தான் ஒரு பிரம்மாண்ட படத்தை தயாரித்தால் எப்படியிருக்கும் என்று அப்போதே கணக்குப் போட்டுக்கொண்டார். விளைவு...?. 'அந்தப்பக்கம்' செல்ல முடிவெடுத்தார். (லட்சக்கணக்கில், கோடிக்கணக்கில் பணம் போட்டு படமெடுப்பவர்கள், பெரிய அளவில் அடி வாங்கும்போது, இதுபோன்றதொரு முடிவு எடுப்பதை யாரும் குற்றம், குறை சொல்ல முடியாது). ஆனால் இன்றைக்கும் 'கர்ணன்' படத்தைப் பார்க்கும் ஒரு தீவிர எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ரசிகன் கூட, 'இவ்வளவு அருமையான படமா தோல்வி அடைந்தது?' என்ற தன் ஆதங்கத்தை வெளியிடுவதைப் பார்க்க முடிகிறது.

இதற்கிடையில், ஒரு பெரிய படத்துக்குப்பின் ஒரு சிறிய படம் என்ற தன்னுடைய ஃபார்முலாவின்படி, பந்துலு நடிகர்திலகத்தை வைத்து 'முரடன் முத்து' படத்தை தயாரிக்க முடிவெடுத்தார். கர்ணன் படத்தின் தோல்வியில் தாங்களும் பங்கெடுத்துக்கொள்ள முடிவெடுத்து, கர்ணன் படத்தில் நடித்திருந்த நடிகர் திலகம், அசோகன், தேவிகா ஆகியோர் முரடன் முத்துவில் சம்பளம் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளாமல் இலவசமாக நடித்தனர். மிகவும் சிக்கனமாக படத்தையெடுத்த பந்துலு இசைக்கு டி.ஜி.லிங்க*ப்பா போன்றவர்களைப் போட்டார். படம் வெளியாகும் நேரத்தில் பந்துலு இன்னொரு பிரச்சினையை கிளப்பினார். (முரடன் முத்து பட ஷூட்டிங் நடக்கும்போதே, 'பந்துலு எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பக்கம் போகப்போகிறார்' என்ற செய்தி கசியத் தொடங்கியது. இப்போது போல ரஜினியை வைத்து ப*டம் தயாரிக்கும் ஏவிஎம் போன்ற நிறுவனம் அடுத்து கமலை வைத்து படம் தயாரிப்பது போலெல்லாம் அப்போது கிடையாது. இவர் எம்ஜியார் தயாரிப்பாளர், இவர் சிவாஜி தயாரிப்பாளர் என்று பிரித்து வைத்திருந்தார்கள்). அதுவரை 98 படங்களில் நடித்திருந்த சிவாஜிக்கு 100 வது படம் எது என்பது பலரின் எதிர்பார்ப்பாக இருந்தது. அப்போது 'முரடன் முத்து', 'நவராத்திரி'ஆகிய இரண்டு படங்களும் முடிவடைந்து வெளியாக தயாராக இருந்தன. 'கர்ணன்' படத்தில் நான் அடிபட்டதால் என்னுடைய 'முரடன் முத்து' படத்தைத் தான் நூறாவது படமாக அறிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று பந்துலு அடம் பிடித்தார். ஆனால் 'நவராத்திரி' படம் பற்றி எல்லோருக்கும் தெரியும். சிவாஜியின் நடிப்புத்திறமைக்கு உரைகல்லாக அமைந்த படம் என்பது எல்லோரும் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளும் உண்மை. ஒன்பது வித்தியாசமான ரோல்களில் அவர் கலக்கியிருக்கும் நவராத்திரி, ஒரு மாபெரும் கலைஞனின் நூறாவது படம் என்பதற்கான முழுத்தகுதியுடனும் அமைந்திருக்கும் நேரத்தில், ஒரு சாதாரண பட*மாக அமைந்த 'முரடன் முத்து' படத்தை சிவாஜியின் நூறாவது படமாக அறிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற பந்துலுவின் எதிர்பார்ப்பு ரொம்ப அதிகப் படியானது என திரையுலகில் அனைவருமே நினைத்தார்கள். முடிவு...?. 'நவராத்திரி' நடிகர் திலகத்தின் நூறாவது படமாக வெளிவந்தது. (முரடன் முத்து 99 வது படம்).

வெகுண்டார் பந்துலு. போன முறை தேவர் தனக்கு வில்லனானார், இம்முறை ஏ.பி.நாகராஜன் வில்லனாகிவிட்டார் என்று கொதித்துப்போன ப்ந்துலு, உடனே 'தினத்தந்தி'யில் முழுப்பக்க விளம்பரம் வெளியிட்டார்.

ஆம். 'முரடன் முத்து' திரையிடப்பட்ட* அன்றைக்கே தினத்தந்தி யில் 'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்' பட முழுப்பக்க விளம்பரம் வெளிவந்தது.

பந்துலு எம்.ஜி.ஆரிடம் போனது பற்றி இவ்வளவு விளக்கம் தேவையா என அனைவரும் நினைக்கலாம். விவரங்கள் சுவாரஸ்யமானவை என்பதால் சற்று நீட்டி விட்டேன். இனி ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் பற்றி.....

மணிமாறன் கதாபாத்திரம் எம்ஜியாருக்காகவே உருவாக்கப்பட்டது போன்ற ஒரு அருமையான படைப்பு. அவரும் அதை மிகவும் அருமையாக செய்திருந்தார். கதாநாயகியாக ஜெயலலிதா. இதிலும் BANDHULU மற்றும் எம்ஜியாரின் துணிச்சல் பாராட்டப்பட வேண்டிய ஒன்று. அதுவரை (பானுமதிக்குப்பின்) சரோஜாதேவிதான் எல்லாப்படங்களிலும் தொடர்ந்து கதாநாயகியாக நடித்து வந்தார். அப்படியிருக்க, திடீரென்று அப்போதுதான் அறிமுகமாகி ஒன்றிரண்டு படங்களில் மட்டுமே நடித்திருந்த ஜெயலலிதாவை கதாநாயகியாக (அதுவும் எம்ஜியாருக்கு ஜோடியாக) போட்டிருந்தார்கள். (ஜெயலலிதா இப்போது நாடறிந்த புள்ளியாக இருந்தாலும், அப்போது அவர் புது முகம்தானே). ஆனால் படத்தில் அவர் நடிப்பைப் பார்க்கும்போது அவரை புதுமுகம் என்று யாரும் ஒப்புக்கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள். அந்த அளவுக்குத் தேர்ந்த நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியிருந்தார்.

'பருவம் எனது பாடல்' என்ற பாடல் காட்சியில் ஜெயலலிதாவை அறிமுகம் செய்வதே அழகாக இருக்கும். கண்ணின் கருவிழியிலும், தாமரைப்பூவின் நடு இதழிலும், கோயிலின் நடு மணடபத்திலும் அவருடைய முகத்தை அறிமுகப்படுத்துவதே ஒரு அழகு.

எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் அறிமுகம் வழக்கம்போல "வெற்றி... வெற்றி..." என்ற வசனத்துடன் துவங்கும். (பாம்பு கடிக்கு மருந்து கண்டுபிடிப்பதில் வெற்றியடைந்திருப்பார்). சர்வாதிகாரி மனோகரால் கன்னித்தீவுக்கு அடிமைகளாக விற்கப்படும்போதாகட்டும், கப்பலில் பாயாசம் கேட்டு போராட்டம் செய்வதாகட்டும், தன்னை விரும்பும் இள்வரசி பூங்கொடியிடம் அவருடைய காதலுக்கு கொஞ்சமும் தகுதியில்லாதவன் என்பதை விளக்குவதாகட்டும், நம்பியாரை நல்லவர் என்று நம்பி அவரிடம் மாட்டிக்கொண்டபின் தன்னை நம்பி வந்தவர்களின் உயிரைக்காக்க தன் மனச்சாட்சிக்கு விரோதமாக 'கடற்கொள்ளையனாக' சம்மதிப்பதாகட்டும், மனோகர் தன் எதிரியாக இருந்தபோதும் கூட கோழைத்தனமாக நம்பியார் விஷம் தோந்த கத்தியை அவர் மீது வீசியதைக் கண்டு கொதித்துப்போய் அவரைக் காப்பாற்றும் இடத்திலாகட்டும்... இப்படி எல்லா காட்சிகளிலும் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் நடிப்பு பாராட்டுமப்டியாக இருக்கும்.

கத்திச்சண்டைக்காட்சிகள் மூன்று இடங்களிலும் மிக அருமையாக படமாக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். மணிமாறனும் பூங்கொடியும் (MGR & ஜெ) குடியிருக்கும் குடிலில் எம்ஜியாருக்கும் நம்பியாருக்கும் நடக்கும் கத்திச்சண்டை (முழுக்க முழுக்க மூங்கிலிலேயே அமைக்கப்பட்ட அருமையான செட்), கார்வார் மலைப்பகுதியில் அவர்கள் இருவருக்கும் இடையே மீண்டும் வாள்சண்டை (நம்பியார்: "இப்போட்டியில் வெற்றி பெறுபவனே இந்த தீவின் த்லைவனாவான். முடிந்தால் நீ தலைவனாகு. இருந்தால் நான் தொண்டனாகிறேன்"), மூன்றாவதாக மனோகரின் படை வீரர்களோடு கப்பலில் மோதும் வாள் சண்டை. இவையனைத்திலும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.(வழக்கம்போல) தன்னுடைய திறமையைக் காட்டி அசத்தியிருப்பார்.

பின்னர் வரப்போகும் மூன்று கத்திச்சண்டைக் காட்சிகளும் ரொம்ப சீரியசாக இருக்கும் என்பதால்தானோ என்னவோ, இவற்றுக்கு முதலில், கன்னித்தீவில் கொள்ளையடிக்க வரும் நம்பியாரின் ஆட்களோடு நடக்கும் சண்டையை ரொம்பவும் நகைச்சுவை ததும்பும் விதமாக படமாக்கியிருப்பார் பந்துலு.

பாடல்களும் இசையும்

இப்படம் இன்னொரு விதத்திலும் மறக்க முடியாத படமாக அமைந்தது. ஆம், அதுவரை தமிழ்த்திரை இசையில் இரட்டையர்களாக கோலோச்சி வந்த 'மெல்லிசை மன்னர்கள்' விஸ்வநாதன் ராமமூர்த்தி இருவரும் கடைசியாக இணைந்து இசையமைத்தது 'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்' படத்திற்குத்தான். அதனால்தானோ என்னவோ இப்படத்தின் பாடல்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் வெரைட்டியாகவும், இசையில் இன்றைக்கும் ஒரு சாதனையாகவும் திகழ்கின்றன. பாடல்கள் அனைத்தும் கிட்டத்தட்ட தமிழ்சினிமா ரசிகர்களுக்கு மனப்பாடம் ஆகி விட்ட ஒன்று. இன்றைக்கும் ஏதாவது ஒரு வகையில் தமிழ் ரசிகர்களுக்கு விருந்தாக தொலைக்காட்சிகளில் வந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. சிறப்பு தேன்கிண்ணம் வழங்க வரும் திரையுலக வி.ஐ.பி.க்கள் மறக்காமல் தொடும் பாடல்கள் இடம் பெற்ற படங்கள் ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன், புதிய பறவை, அன்பே வா... இவற்றிலிருந்து பாடல்களைச் சொல்லாமல் அவர்கள் நிகழ்ச்சிகளை நிறைவு செய்வதேயில்லை. காரணம் அந்த அளவுக்கு தேன் சொட்டும் பாடல்கள்.

1) பருவம் எனது பாடல்

நான் முதலிலேயே சொன்னபடி, கதாநாயகி ஜெயலலிதா அறிமுகம் ஆகும் பாடல். தோழிகளோடு அவர் ஆடிப்பாடும் காட்சி என்பதால், பி.சுசீலாவின் குரலோடு கோரஸ் சிறப்பாக சேர்க்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்.

கருணை எனது கோயில் கலைகள் எனது காவல்

பல்லவியைபாடிமுடித்த சுசீலா, உச்ச ஸ்தாயியில் ‘HUMMING’ஆரம்பித்து அப்படியே படிப்படியாக கீழ்ஸ்தாயி வரையில் கொண்டுவர*, கூடவே அதுக்கு அனுசரணையாக கோரஸ் கலந்து ஒலிக்க, அப்பப்பா.. மெல்லிசை மன்னர்கள் இங்கு மெல்லிசை சக்கரவர்த்திகளாக உயர்ந்து நிற்பார்கள். பல்லவி முடிந்து

"இதயம் எனது ஊராகும் இளமை எனது பேராகும்"

என்று சரணம் தொடங்கும்போது, பாங்கோஸ் அருமையாக பாடலை அணைத்துச் செல்லும்.

2) 'ஏன் என்ற கேள்வி இங்கு கேட்காமல் வாழ்க்கையில்லை'

வழக்கம்போல எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் தன்னம்பிக்கை ஊட்டும் பாடல் வரிசையில் ஒன்று.

"ஓராயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் ஆகட்டுமே
நம் பொறுமையின் பொருள் மட்டும் விளங்கட்டுமே
வரும் காலத்திலே நம் பரம்பரைகள்
நாம் அடிமையில்லை என்று முழங்கட்டுமே"

இந்திய சுதந்திரப் போராட்ட தியாகிகள் எல்லாம் இப்படி எண்ணியதால்தானே இன்று நாம் சுத*ந்திரக் காற்றை சுவாசித்துக் கொண்டு இருக்கிறோம்.

3) 'ஓடும் மேகங்களே ஒரு சொல் கேளீரோ'

இந்தப் பாடலைப்பற்றி நண்பர்கள் ஏற்கெனவே இங்கு சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள். மக்கள் திலகம் பல கவிஞர்களிடம் பாடல் எழுதியும் திருப்தியடையாமல், அப்போது தன்னிடம் கருத்து வேறுபாடு கொண்டிருந்த கவியரசர் கண்ணதாசனை அழைத்து இந்தப்பாடலை எழுதச் சொல்லி திருப்தியடைந்தார் என்பார்க*ள். பாதிப்பாட*ல் அர*ண்ம*னை செட்டிலும் பாதிப்பாட*ல் கார்வார் க*ட*ற்க*ரையிலும் க*ண்டினியூட்டி கெடாம*ல் எடுக்க*ப்ப*ட்டிருக்கும்.

4) 'உன்னை நான் ச*ந்தித்தேன் நீ ஆயிர*த்தில் ஒருவ*ன்'

பி.சுசீலா தனியாக*ப் பாடிய* பாட*ல். கூட*வே ஆண்க*ளின் கோர*ஸ். ம*ணிமாற*னைப் பிரிந்த* பூங்கொடி, செங்க*ப்ப*ரின் அர*ண்ம*னையில் சோக*மே உருவாக* பாடும் பாட*ல், கூட*வே க*ப்ப*லில் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கும் ம*ணிமாற*னைக் காண்பிக்கும்போது, அவ*ர*து கூட்டாளிக*ளின் உற்சாக*மான* கோர*ஸ்.

அடுத்து வ*ரும் இசை 'பிட்'டைக் கேட்க* முடியாது, கார*ண*ம் ப*ல*த்த* கைத*ட்ட*லும், விசில் ச*த்த*மும். பாட*ல் முடியும்போது, கோர*ஸுட*ன் க*ப்ப*ல்க*ள் முல்லைத்தீவு க*ரையில் ஒதுங்குவ*தாக* காட்டுவ*து அருமை. (கப்பல்கள் கரை ஒதுங்கும்போது, முல்லைத்தீவின் அரசியான எல்.விஜயலட்சுமி கருப்பு நிற உடையில் அழகுப்பதுமையாக நடந்து வருவது எடுப்பான காட்சி).

4) 'ஆடாமல் ஆடுகிறேன்'

கடற்கொள்ளையின்போது கிடைத்த பொருட்கள் மட்டுமின்றி, மனிதர்கள் கூட பொருட்களாக கருதப்பட்டு ஏலத்தில் விடப்பட வேண்டும் என்ற தீவின் சட்டப்படி, ஜெயலலிதா ஏலம் விடப்படும்போது அவர் மனம் நொந்து ஆண்டவனை அழைக்கும் பாடல். சுசீலா மேடத்துக்கு இப்படத்தில் அற்புதமான மூன்று தனிப்பாடல்கள், அதில் இதுவும் ஒன்று. இசை அருமையோ அருமை. முதலில் சாட்டயடி சத்தம், அதைத்தொடர்ந்து ஒவ்வொரு சாட்டையடிக்கும் அதைப் பிரதிபலிக்கும் வண்ணம் வயலினின் ஓசை.

"ஆடாமல் ஆடுகிறேன்... பாடாமல் பாடுகிறேன்
ஆண்டவனைத் தேடுகிறேன் வா...வா...வா....
நான் ஆண்டவனைத் தேடுகிறேன்

முதல் இரண்டு வரிகளுக்கு பாங்கோஸ் இசைக்க, 'ஆண்டவனைத் தேடுகிறேன்' என்ற வரி ஆரம்பிக்கும்போது அருமையாக த்பேலா ஆரம்பிக்கும். இடையிசையில் முதலில் வயலின், பின்னர் கிடார், அடுத்து ஃப்ளூட், பின் மீண்டும் வயலின் அடுத்து தபேலா சோலோ என்று மாறி மாறி ஒலித்து பாடலை எங்கோ கொண்டு செல்லும்.

"விதியே உன் கை நீட்டி வலை வீசலாம்
ஊரார்கள் என்னைப் பார்த்து விலை பேசலாம்
அழகென்ற பொருள் வாங்க பலர் கூடலாம்
அன்பென்ற மனம் வாங்க யார் கூடுவார்"

'கன்னித்தீவின் இளவரசியாக கவலையில்லாமல் வாழ்ந்தேனே, இன்று இவர்கள் கையில் மாட்டி ஏலம் போகவா செங்கப்பரை வற்புறுத்தி கடல் பயணம் வந்தேன்' என்ற ஏக்கம் பொங்க ஜெயலலிதா காட்டும் முகபாவம் நம் கண்களில் நீரை வரவழைக்கும். (மற்றவர்கள் அழுதார்களா தெரியாது, ஆனால் நான் அழுதேன். ஒரு பெண்ணின் சோகம் இன்னொரு பெண்ணுக்குத்த்னே தெரியும்).
வயலினும் தபேலாவும் உச்ச ஸ்தாயியில் போய் பாடல் முடியும்போது மழை பெய்து ஓய்ந்த மாதிரி இருக்கும்.

(மெல்லிசை மன்னர்கள் இருவரும் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் அருமையான ‘SEND OFF ‘கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள் இப்படத்தில்).

5) 'நாணமோ... இன்னும் நாணமோ..'

நீ இளவரசி, நான் அடிமை யென்று பேதம் பார்த்து ஒதுங்கிருந்த மணிமாறனை ஒருவழியாக (விஷம் அருந்தியதாக பொய் சொல்லி) தன் காதலுக்கு சம்மதிக்க வைத்தாயிற்று. பின்னர் என்ன..?. காதலர்களுக்கு ஒரு பாடலாவது வேண்டாமா?. அதுதான் இந்தப்பாடல். சிங்கம் ஒரு குட்டி போட்டாலும் அது சிங்கக் குட்டியாக இருக்கும் என்பது போல, படத்தில் இடம் பெற்றது ஒரேயொரு டூயட் பாடல் என்றாலும், மனதை அள்ளிக்கொண்டு போகும் பாடல். பாடலின் ‘PRELUDE’அருமையாக துவங்கும். (PRELUDE, INTERLUDE என்பவை என்ன என்று தெரிந்துகொள்ள இன்றைய இளைஞர்கள் இதுபோன்ற படங்களின் பாடல்களைக் கேட்பது நல்லது).

"தோட்டத்துப் பூவினில் இல்லாதது
ஒரு ஏட்டிலும் பாட்டிலும் சொல்லாதது
ஆடையில் ஆடுது வாடையில் வாடுது
ஆனந்த வெள்ளத்தில் நீராடுது.. அது எது?

ஆடவர் கண்கள் காணாதது
அது காலங்கள் மாறினும் மாறாதது
காதலன் பெண்ணிடம் தேடுவது
காதலி கண்களை மூடுவது.. அது இது"

(எல்லாப்பாடல்களிலும் ஒவ்வொரு சரணம் மட்டுமே சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன். நீளத்தைக் குறைக்கத்தான்).
பாடலின் முதல் பாதியில் ஜெயலலிதாவுக்கு பூக்களால் ஆடை செய்திருப்பார்கள். மறுபாதியில் எம்ஜியார், ஜெயலலிதா இருவருக்கும் ஆடை அழகாக கண்னைக்கவரும் வண்ணம் இருக்கும்.

6) 'அதோ அந்தப் பறவை போல வாழ வேண்டும்'

அடிக்கடி தொலைக்காட்சியில் கேட்டு, பார்த்து ரசித்த பாடல். எல்லோருமே இப்பாடலை பாராட்டிப் பேசுவார்கள். ஆகவே நானும் இழுத்துக் கொண்டு போவது அவசியமற்றது. கப்பலில் எம்ஜியார், ஜெயலலிதா, நாகேஷ், நம்பியார் என அனைவரும் இடம்பெறும் பாடல் காட்சி. பாடலின் பல்லவியை முதலிலேயே கிடாரில் ‘PRELUDE’ ஆக வாசித்துக் காட்டுவார்கள்.
இதன் இடையிசையில் வரும் ல..லா..லா.. ல..லா.. லா என்ற கோரஸ் ரொம்ப பிரசித்தம்.

"கோடி மக்கள் சேர்ந்து வாழ வேண்டும் விடுதலை
கோயில் போல நாடு காண வேண்டும் விடுதலை
அச்சமின்றி ஆடிப்பாட வேண்டும் விடுதலை
அடிமை வாழும் பூமியெங்கும் வேண்டும் விடுதலை"

இன்றைக்கு இந்தப்பாடல்களை தொலைக்காட்சியில் வசதியாக கண்டு ரசிக்கிறோம். ஆனால், இது போன்ற வசதியற்ற அந்நாட்களில் இப்படத்தின் பாடல்களை தமிழர்களின் காதுகளுக்கு கொண்டு சென்று சேர்த்த பெருமை இலங்கை வானொலியைச் சேரும் என்பதை நாம் நன்றியோடு நினைத்துப் பார்க்கிறோம்.

இப்படத்தில் நாகேஷின் நகைச்சுவை நம்மை வயிறு குலுங்க சிரிக்கவைக்கும். உதாரணத்துக்கு ஒன்று. பூங்கொடியின் தோழி தேன்மொழியை (மாதவி) நாகேஷ் ஏலத்தில் எடுத்து வருவார். அப்போது எம்ஜியார் "என்னப்பா, தேன்மொழியை நீ ஏலத்தில் எடுத்தியா?"

நாகேஷ்: "அட நீங்க வேறே. இவள் வாயப் பார்த்ததும்தான் திடலே காலியா போச்சே. பழகின தோஷத்துக்காக சும்மா பாத்துக்கிட்டு நின்னேன். என்னைப்பார்த்து 'ஈ'ன்னு சிரிச்சா. 'கொன்னுடுவேன்' அப்படீன்னு ஒரு விரலைக் காட்டினேன். அந்த ஏலக்காரன், நான் ஒரு பவுனுக்கு இவளைக் கேட்கிறேனாக்கும்னு நினைச்சு இவளை என் தலையில் கட்டிட்டான்".

'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்' திரையிடப்பட்டபோது சென்னை புரசைவாக்கம் மேகலா தியேட்டரில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்., ஜெயலலிதா ஆகியோருடன் பந்துலுவும் அமர்ந்து படத்தைப்பார்த்தார். (அப்போது அந்த திரையரங்கில் வேட்டைக்காரன், பணக்கார குடும்பம், எங்கவீட்டுப்பிள்ளை என எம்ஜியார் படங்களே திரையிடப்பட்டு வெற்றியடந்து வந்தன. அந்த தியேட்டரில் வெற்றியடந்த படங்களை ஆண்டு வாரியாக வரிசைப்படுத்தி ஒரு பிளாஸ்டிக் போர்டு வைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதை இப்போதும் பார்க்கலாம்). படத்தின் முதல் நாள் முதல் காட்சியிலேயே தெரிந்து விட்டது, படம் மாபெரும் வெற்றி யென்பது. தமிழ்நாட்டின் பல ஊர்களில மாபெரும் வெற்றி பெற்று சாதனை புரிந்தது.

எப்போது பார்த்தாலும் புத்தம் புதியதாகவும் பிரமிப்பூட்டும் படமாகவும் அமைந்த படம் தான் ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன். இப்படத்தைப்பற்றிய கருத்துக்களை உங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டது பற்றி மிகவும் சந்தோஷம்.

1. During paruvam enadhu padal , after that idayam enadhu ooragum , I could hear a mild arabian type counter & that adds punch to the song !
2. MGR always spoke positive things & u can see him starting with the words VETRI VETRI towards Nagesh after he invents that anti snake poison relief !
3. Every song is worth describing as a separate post ! & u did it !
4. The sets , the costumes everything was top class !
5. JJ will look very charming . No need to mention about Thalaivar :D
6. Nambiar becomming a friend is anticlimax midway !
7. Why Asokan was absent ? I could see all the villains .

Recently I watched Ulagam sutrum Valiban again from DVD.

Songs are ultimate..As an album ,USV is one of the best ,I think ..I heard MSV made the tunes in very short period ..each and every song is fresh and mesmerising.

MGR's costumes are very good.As a director ,He knew what should be shown in foreign location.

One day MGR appeared in my dream, woke me up, and asked me if I had forgotten him.

The next day, I went to the MGR memorial and started meditating, when I had another dream. This time, I dreamt of Rajkiran sitting on the MGR memorial.

Naturally, I realized that the best lead man for my upcoming movie would be Rajkiran. And so I headed to Rajkiran’s house after a couple of days.

Rajkiran welcomed me in, and told me he knew I would come.

“How?,” I asked.

“Why, MGR appeared in my dream and told me you’d come,” he said.

Kodambakkam LIBERTY

Aminjikarai LAKSHMI

Mehta Nagar PAZHANIYAPPA

and so on ... That's where I used to watch old MGR, Sivaji, Rajini, and Kamal movies !!

Some movies went beyond a week too !!! Except the weekends, you can pretty much get the tickets over the week without any hassle ... :thumbsup:

The good thing abt all these old theatres screening old movies is, fans who are from the previous generation can still enjoy watching their fav stars on the big screen ... Like these days, being a Rajini fan, I feel as if I belong to the previous generation !!! :cry: :oops: :cry:

I watched MAHADEVI in Pazhaniyappa !! Man, this was in the late 80s I think .. The movie was housefull ... :D

Another experience as a kid was, we went to watch Rajini's NALLAVANUKKU NALLAVAN in 1984 at AVM Rajeshwari theatre in Madras ... I was only 5 at that time, so obviously I couldnt follow anything that was happening ... But all of a sudden, the whole theatre was screaming and whistling ... When I looked up, they were showing the trailer of the movie IDHAYAKKANI during it's 2nd or 3rd release ... Man, I still remember, the song Neenga Nalla Irukanum naadu munnaera song was shown ... Amazing response in theatre ... :thumbsup:

And of course, when Nallavanukku Nallavan movie began, it was BIGIL BIGIL !!! :lol:

'Anbe vAA' was shot at Simla during 1965 and released in January 14, 1966 (Pongal Day)

But election was held in March 1967 (that is 14 months after Anbe vAA released).

Your 'thoppi' matter is correct, but it was when he was in hospital after shot by M.R.Radha. It was in 1967 election time.
