interesting ... Querida, can you take this one step further and tell us the 'real' name of martin sheen (father of charlie and emilio - he should be another estevez, right?!)

well wrestling has such a bad image among public/us congress anyway, so i wasn't that surprised. But Mickey did a great job nonetheless.
I've yet to see Milk, but Sean has already won the big one couple of times.. so
anyway big  for him..
EDIT: Sean Penn and Milk winning awards was done only so the Academy could make a "sorry for Prop 8" political statement. Penn practically said Rourke should have won Best Answer.
It was a lame decision, and it reinforces the idea that the Academy would rather acknowledge how "progressive" and "forward-thinking" it is rather than acknowledge good actors and films.

Time to revisit the post. Hope fully I am wise by 3 years.
Al Pacino - Easily the actor with the most demanding screen presence of our time. After watching The Godfather films multiple times I believe no one could have done that role. Short only in stature but a giant in histrionics. The only actor who could kiss a guy and still make it look terrorizing. If only he had done more films. Best acting moment would be crying over his dead girl in Godfather 3. Best Film : The godfather 1
Robert De Niro: Quiet simply the most versatile actor living or dead in any time to my knowledge. Set standards for actors to follow across the globe. The dedication shown as Jake La Motta . I wished he had an earlier debut. Fav acting Moment - The russian roulette scene in Vietnam from The Deer Hunter. Best Film: Gf-2/Taxi
Tom Hanks: Incredible, Charismatic and always a pleasure to watch. Brings out performances that arrests viewers across all ages. Second to None he works like a charm. Thank heavens he diverted to Dramas in the 90's.
Best Film: Saving Private ryan.
Fav acting Moment: There's no crying in baseball from A league of thier own.
Jack Nicholson: An actor of a kind. Can't be put in any category. Very unique. Has evolved a lot from the Shining to the departed.
Fav acting Moment: Court room scene in A few Good men.
Kevin Spacey: Recently watched American Beauty. Lester Burnham is an American Class act.
Honorable Mentions: Brad Pitt/Dicaprio/Johnny Depp/RDJ :D
Haven't seen enough of Brando to form an opinion but from GF1/A Street car named Desire and Apocalypse now must be surely among the top rack.

In "A Beautiful Mind" - the way he expresses about the girl he has met to his imaginatory friend.
The scene at the university - when his colleagues appreciate him with placing a pen on the table for his achievement (winning the nobel prize)
his voice modulation and subtle expressions when he delivers the speech at the nobel awards ceremony
There are many scenes - I think you should revist the entire flick. paathuttE irukkalaam - he was such a treat to watch in that movie - the one that would remain as one of my all time favourite movies ever.

To add to that he was on his way to become one of the legends in the hollywood. His variation is unbelievable. Look at his transformation from Gladiator to troubled scientist in beautiful mind. Having understood the mannerisms of the John Nash he did an excellent job in portraying John Nash. His behavior at the press and in general affected his oscar chances heavily and that resulted in oscar for Denzel washington in training day. Even though Denzel washington has true calibre to win oscar on his own. As a result Russel crowe spoilt his career in hollywood and now it is very difficult for him to get back, what he has lost in his career.

Which movie ? La haine (Hate) or Sheitan or Dobermann or ... some recent movies. I have watched mostly all of his movies. Have you seen "Black Swan" ?
I did watch Black Swan (IMO best oscar english movie) but I thought it was a cake walk for him. The arrogance with the subtle seducing and all is there in his features itself, he dint have to put in the effort. And yeah I have seen La Haine and dobermann. I dint like dobermann that much but La Haine is a favorite and it is one of the movies I always want to watch again but just keep waiting for the right time. He was terrific in Irreversible too but who remembers him in it? :-D But seriously I remember La haine being his finest closely followed by Mesrine. And I have been wanting to watch Read My Lips, heard that too is a good movie. Have you watched it? Is it good?

Sticking to 2001, Crowe in Biutiful mind, & likes of Washington (Training day) were (And still are) recognized (by the idiots in Academy) over Gosling's turn in "The Believer" defies belief. Astonishing performance by Gosling, one of decade's best!
I have not seen this movie yet so I can't comment about it. But as you said Oscar does not award for necessarily the best performance of the year. Lot of factors come into play including marketing, exposure and of course politics. But still when compared with indian awards it is still several times better.

Crowe got my notice in L.A. Confidential. Nobody expressed raw rage like that after de Niro and Pacino. Superb supporting role. Then came The Insider. Completely lost himself in the role. Gladiator came and I was convinced that he was a combo of Brando and Charlton Heston. Beautiful Mind was awesome...theeeen....I waited, and waited, and still waiting...
Thilak, agree with you on Mitchum, Marvin and Lancaster.

Yes. Its a good movie. Its starts more like a Thriller and then develops into Drama with in depth view on human nature and emotions, then it bounces back all of a sudden. "Sur mes lèvres", the original title is in French. Jacques Audiard is a very good director too ... his recent movies "Un prophète" and "De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté" are worth mentioning. But do not expect the thrills and spins that we find in American movies. These movies are sensible as well as deals with characters and emotions rather than special effects and "Blue color"

Then that just means that he's the best of the bests which I am not saying.

Sounds great! Un prophete was classy, not my kind ofa movie but there are no doubts about its class. The Beat That My Heart Skipped has stayed in my "Must watch" list for a long time too.
Dunno if it is allowed to talk about this, correct me if I am wrong. TPB has a seeded one (sur mes levres) but looks like it has no subs. Another one has 5 seeds but the size is a bit big. Any better link? :(

Vankv, thanks for reviving this thread. I want to go back in time and list who were my fav actors then (I was born in 1973, to give you the maths).
in the
70s - too young, no TV in house, mostly Tamizh movies if dad brings us out. He mentioned that he got us watching Eastwood, Bronson, and McQueen (The Great Escape his favourite, I got a VCD as gift years ago).
80s - theatres shut down nearby, but got TV. Became fans of the TV series guys, like Tom Selleck, Lee Majors, George Preppard, Richard Dean Anderson. On Movie front, thanks to pirated VHS, Stallone, Norris, Bud Spenser and Terence Hill, then catching any James Bond films on TV, became a confirmed Sean Connery fan, and Dalton though I never seen his Bond films until....
90s. Film student era. Like on my own, not college film student. Grabbing anything I could get, Brando, Newman, Lemmon, and all the Bond films on VHS before, became dedicated to Tim Dalton, and more, got to know about the 70s movement, and "I love you" I said to De Niro, Pacino, Hackman, Hoffman, Beatty, oh man. Then, for contemporary finding, there was Crowe, who I swore is the actual next Brando.
00s. Getting jaded. Started appreciating the ones I missed, like Moore, Schwarzenegger, Willis, started feeling that Crowe is not the next Brando, accepted Craig as Bond, but hated second outing, truly appreciated Day-Lewis...but really losing focus now.
