V.Kumar was one of the leading music directors in the late 60s and early 70 and had composed some memorable hits for K.Balachander and a host of others. His hits include :

1. Bama Vijayam
2. Edhir neechal
3. Arangetram
4. Major Chandrakanth
5. Raja naagam
6. Velli vizha

Todays' generation might not have heard of him but its worth discussing about him as he had composed some lovely songs.

"AvaL oru thodarkathai" by M.S.Viswanathan only. It is 200% sure.

(You watched the movie 100 times. But all the 100 times you were sleeping when title card was shown).

V.Kumar's last movie with KB was 'Arangetram' only.

From 'Aval oru thodar kathai' KB worked with MSV. It continued as
'Apoorva Raagangal',
'Manmadha Leelai',
'Moondru Mudichu',
'Avargal',
'Ninaithaaley Inikkum',
'Nizhal nijamaagirathu', '
'VaRumaiyin niRam sivappu'...and so on....

Even when V.Kumar was compossing music for KB, KB used MSV then and there, such as "Bama Vijayam', Anubavi Raja Anubavi, Punnagai, KaNNaa Nalamaa, Kaaviya thalaivi....etc.

Kaviyathalavi was composed by MSV and not VKumar.
There is a melodius song ( typical MSV song ), Kayyodu kai serkkum kaalangalay ( by Susheela )

By the way, Poova thalayaa was composed by MSV only

You are right. Thats a nice song . Its from the raga - Kambodhi and you know any song with a carnatic base will be nice always and all MDs of yesteryears used carnatic base for thier composing

I have been regularly singing for my wife as she is another mad fan of Shivaji. This song was a perfect match for Shivaji and VS.

I wish to write about how to enjoy a song in another thread.

The best part of this great song .. according to me is ...

Kaadhal devan kalyana veetil kadhavu thiravaaadhu..... PS in her sweet voice..

followed by TMS....

Kanni vasal kaana kaana .... kangal podhadhu...

The stress TMS gave for the word.... Kangal podhadhu ..... was terrific and only TMS had that commitment.


Great song ... will last until Tamil music lasts.


There is another song............ Shivaji .. will sing for Vanishree the penultimate day before her eye operation.. Can you pl recollect.

Shivaji will be perfect match for Vanishree in that movie, because shivaji was lean in that period (Dheiva Magan, Thirudan, Thanga surangam... season).

When I saw 'Niraikudam', I curse 'Muktha' Srinivasan why he did not shoot that movie in colour.

Yes yes.... I recollect that song.. Vilake nee konda oli...... TMS at his best but in a mild manner.... going by the sober situation of the song.... I wonder probabaly, TMS would have asked for the situation of that song and imagined himself there !! and sang that song....
The care Shivaji will show to Vanee in that scene.... was terrific....

The movie itself was nice one... Muthuraman and Shivaji were friends and will do shadow fights only to tease Vanee .. with this thin thread of story a nice movie was built.

One more good compossing for V.Kumar is "Raja Naagam" (remake of a Kannada movie 'naagara haavu').

Shrikanth played a very different role with the pair of manjula and Suba. (I mean the old Shrikanth)

Valee wrote all lyrics and V.Kumar compossed music. Some of the songs are:

"Maanavan ninaithaal... nadathi kaattuvaan".... (TMS) for Shrikanth

"Samudhaaya veedhiyile naan sivappu vilakku" ...(PS) for Manjula

"Dhevan vedhamum kannan geethaiyum
