I've watched only a handful of horror movies, I would like to know what hubbers think is the scariest...can be action as well...oh how about ranking them from scariest to least? I particularly interested in movies that are less known rather than a list of what hubbers have/have not watched....some constructive criticism is welcome as well

just to start the horror movies i have watched:
exorcist (i love this classic...mind boggling that the director was able to capture such scariness back then....so that even banned in UK grudge ( i serioulsy was scared with this one...must have been the all hallow's eve rep that day
the shining
ringu (not the english version  )
the eye (had potential then died off)
poltergeist
haunted house
the frighteners (kinda mellow)
scream (I disliked the gory ones the least...it was just senseless)

i know i have not watched many of the classic ones like elm street series, zombie series, jason series, alien series...so fill me please

querida ,
please don't rate exorcist as a horror movie .tell me what's so scary in that.
i think it can be categorized as a comedy movie. imho scream is a better one.

try these:
dawn of the dead
wrong turn
amityville horror
evil dead(classic)
saw(suspense)

i thought The Ring was real good... it's more jus startling than scary..the concept is really foolish. but white noise was pretty good because it's a true phenomenon. what 's scary about that movie is that it's already a subject you've heard about on news n stuff..so u actually question whether it's possible or not. SAW was actually jus real gorey (sp not sure). i mean it's jus real gruesome screenplay... but actually the Exorcist is kinda scary... i mean the whole concept itself is scary and as a christian....i've seen and heard of it so another case of "it COULD happen" makes it scary.

If there's one movie that totally freaked me out, then that has got to be IT.

Other horrifying movies include:
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Lift
Final Destination (both 1&2)
The Devil's Advocate

*spoilers ahead*

some movies stay in your memory just cause of that one scene...like in poltergeist III it wasn't so good until that scene were the old man slithers from underneath the bed all mutated :x and in Amityville horror where the plumber gets suffocated with black ooze....or of course in The Ring where she actually climbs out of the tv....which i think was considerably ruined by american movies preview showing people cause they included the best scene in the preview!

Shining is my most favourite horror movie. Its not scary but its weird !! The climax in the maze will be spine-chilling 8-). And Jack Nicholson's performance is right up there with One flew over the cuckoo's nest

And yeh its kubrick's 8-)

Just finished watching "The Blair Witch Project"
What a concept!!!!!!

I just checked the imdb entry for the film now and the comment left by someone there says it best:

I think I know why Blair Witch has generated as much negative as positive responses. It FORCES YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THE MOVIE GOING EXPERIENCE!
Wow. What a concept. Instead of sitting there like the passive sponges most of us become when going to the movies we are actually expected be become involved. Take a leap of faith/belief or whatever and delve into this movie. Without the overpowering F/X and music score most movies rely on to 'scare' you, if you still have an imagination left what is implied becomes a hundred times scarier than anything offered up by Hollywood in the last 30 years. The hardest thing in movies is to scare you. Not make you jump out of your seat with 5000 watts of sound blasting at 400 decibels (ever seen the 1999 version of the Haunting? Event Horizon? - every potentially tense scene is preceeded by dead silence then the Blast). Wake up people! Blair Witch is the horror movies we have been needing for a long time and I'm glad someone finally had the guts to make it.

Not scary in an 'jerk-reaction' kind of way but the concept is... and the climax!!!!!

I can't believe I still haven't seen it...It is THE BIGGEST SUCCESS in the Horror Genre, as far as Hollywood goes atleast! They put in like $20,000 as an initial budget and made billions!

Omen was an original Horror movie.

Exorcist was the best.

There is another movie called The Wind

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094327/

with Meg Foster in the lead

Once of the superb horror movies ever but underrated.

Its not real.. the "real story" scoop was a rumor to boost the publicity i read....

About photography that's the point Nilavu... its through the eyes of the handy-cams carried by them...

Do watch it again!!!

Omen

I would say this had a lot of effect on ppl... there is nothing like ugly faces or something like that ... tis just the music .... the background score made it all happen.... Gregory Peck did great justice to his role, it was simply superb watching the movie !

Exorcist

I would rate this second .... this movie had some effects where faces make a difference. THe movie also had a lot of bg score which made ppl fear ....

Evil Dead

This one was mostly with ugly faces, initially it was scary but later on became funny ;-)

Poltergeist
This one was really a new approach, again gud bg music and lot of unexpected twists ...

Braindead
This one was simply hilarious

Vampire
This one did really have a big welcome during the early times ...

'The Shining' is probably the best horror movie i watched too... J Nicholson and also the little boy's performance adds to the horror..i have also been to the hotel where the actual movie was shot... :)

'The Eye' is my next bet...esp the scene when the boyfriend shows the girl her pic, and she doesnt recognize her own pic.. :)

i just hate the 'Evil Dead' kind of movies...too many masks..esp if u watch kids dress up for Haloween every year.. :D

yeah... sleepy hollow is one of my personal favourites too. having watched it long ago, i dont remember much of it except for how petrified :frightened: i was while watching the movie.... especially the scene when johny depp watches the head-less horse man spring out of his grave :shaking: :skull: for the first time. the spoof the villagers make on the hero was terrific too. if i remember correctly it won an oscar for its settings. evil dead is all fun when i look back now. but,

We were in no mood for the tenth std tuition classes that day. the nearest theatre was screening evil dead then and we three wanted to try. the theatre was the eeriest i had ever gone. or may be, the feeling that we are gonna watch one of the most famous horror movies gave us that feeling. coz, i didnt feel so, while watching thenali in the same theatre. for a theatre that usually screened porn movies, evil dead was a pretty decent movie. but, 'the turn-out was disappointing' would certainly be an understatement. may be thats why they weren't screening decent movies. to our disaster, not more than ten people were seated ahead of us. and only a couple that seemed newly married were seated a few rows behind us. whoa... wuck... dunno what to say. there was a big tussle between us b4 we could decide who would sit in between the other two... the most rememberable part came in the interval when we were licking our delicious ice creams and the lights went off all of a sudden and a bell rang terrifyingly, signalling the end of the interval. we ran like hell.. one tumbled down on the way.. we threw the ice cream in fear over a person on the way back to our seats.. and our screams managed to do what evil dead couldn't. yeah, the couple behind momentarily paused their public foreplay.

may be i have a point at the end of this long post. if you had watched horror movies in a day bright room with a lot of friends or relatives around you on a tv or a comp... you probably missed the thrill.

The thing in the grudge was...all of it's "Scariest" stuff was in like the first 15 mins...which made the rest of the movie seem a bit silly..... For me atleast. :D :P

Psycho was awesomely disturbing, Norman Bates!, and also acclaimed for its famous eye shot.

The Ring I and II were good.

Though I am a fan of horror movies in any shape or form, even if they're stupid.

Some not as scary ones that still deliver thrills include:

- When a stranger calls
- The Messengers
- Darkness Falls
- The Grudge
- The Fog (prolly my least fav)
