salan, what kind of dish is it

I've seen many recipes for this type of dish, but many seem to be very different. I realise that there are going to be regional variations, but the variations I've seen could not account for it, I don't think. So, what is your idea of a salan.

HI my best friends are pakistani, they refer to salan as the subzi or chicken dish they have made. it is basically another word for food item/ subzi/meat item. for example "umi aap ne konsa salan aaj baniah" "beta mene maach ki dal or chicken shorba baniah"
