It is great to see this place as lively as a wedding hall - good to hear from you all! vaNakkam!
When I received the following note I laughed out loud by the funny tenor and then fell into overall sadness - can't these young men find south Indian girls who can pronounce their names properly (but wouldn't)?
Any way, you decide:
Qupte:
"The Travails of Single South Indian men of conservative upbringing"
or "Why we don't get any..."
Yet another action packed weekend in Mumbai, full of fun, frolic and
introspection. I have learnt many things. For example having money
when none of your friends have any is as good as not having any. And
after spending much time in movie theatres, cafes and restaurants I
have gathered many insights into the endless monotony that is the love
life of south Indian men. What I have unearthed is most disheartening.
Disheartening because comprehension of these truths will not change
our status anytime soon. However there is also cause for joy. We never
stood a chance anyway. What loads the dice against virile, gallant,
well educated, good looking, sincere mallus and tams? (Kandus were
once among us, but Bangalore has changed all that.)
Our futures are shot to hell as soon as our parents bestow upon us
names that are anything but alluring. I cannot imagine a more
foolproof way of making sure the child remains single till classified
advertisements or that maternal uncle in San Francisco thinks
otherwise. Name him "Parthasarathy Venkatachalapthy" and his inherent
capability to combat celibacy is obliterated before he could even
talk. He will grow to be known as Partha. Before he knows, his smart,
seductively named northy classmates start calling him Paratha. No
woman in their right minds will go anyway near poor Parthasarathy. His
investment banking job doesn't help either. His employer loves him
though. He has no personal life you see. By this time the Sanjay
Singhs and Bobby Khans from his class have small businesses of their
own and spend 60% of their lives in discos and pubs. The remaining 40%
is spent coochicooing with leather and denim clad muses in their
penthouse flats on Nepean Sea Road. Business is safely in the hands of
the Mallu manager. After all with a name like Blossom Babykutty he
cant use his 30000 salary anywhere. Blossom gave up on society when in
school they automatically enrolled him for Cookery Classes. Along with
all the girls.
Yes my dear reader, nomenclature is the first nail in a coffin of
neglect and hormonal pandemonium. In a kinder world they would just
name the poor southern male child and throw him off the balcony. "Yes
appa we have named him Goundamani..." THUD. Life would have been less
kinder to him anyway.
If all the women the Upadhyays, Kumars, Pintos and, god forbid, the
Sens and Roys in the world have met were distributed amongst the
Arunkumars, Vadukuts and Chandramogans we would all be merry casanovas
with 3 to 4 pretty things at each arm. But alas it is not to be. Of
course the south Indian women have no such issues. They have names
which are like sweet poetry to the ravenous northie hormone tanks.
Picture this: "Welcome, and this is my family. This is my daughter
Poorni (what a sweet name!!) and my son Ponnalagusamy (er..
hello..).." Cyanide would not be fast enough for poor Samy. Nothing
Samy does will help him. He can pump iron, drive fast cars and wear
snazzy clothes, but against a braindead dude called Arjun Singhania he
has as much chance of getting any as a Benedictine Monk in a Saharan
Seminary.
Couple this with the other failures that have plagued our existence.
Any attempt at spiking hair with gel fails miserably. In an hour I
have a crown of greasy, smelly fibrous mush. My night ends there.
However the northy just has to scream "Wakaw!!!" and you have to peel
the women off him to let him breathe. In a disco while we can manage
the medium hip shake with neck curls, once the Bhangra starts pumping
we are as fluid as cement and gravel in a mixer. Karan Kapoor or Jatin
Thapar in the low cut jeans with chaddi strap showing and see through
shirt throws his elbows perfectly, the cynosure of all attention. The
women love a man who digs pasta and fondue. But why do they not see
the simple pleasures of curd rice and coconut chutney? When poor
Senthilnathan opens his tiffin box in the office lunch room his female
coworkers just dissappear when they see the tamarind rice and
poppadums. The have all rematerialised around Bobby Singh who has
ordered in Pizza and Garlic bread. (And they have the gall to talk of
foreign origin.)
How can a man like me brought up in roomy lungis and oversized
polyester shirts ever walk the walk in painted on jeans (that makes a
big impression) and neon yellow rib hugging t shirts? All I can do is
don my worn "comfort fit" jeans and floral shirt. Which is pretty low
on the "Look at me lady" scale, just above fig leaf skirt and feather
headgear a la caveman, and a mite below Khakhi Shirt over a red t
shirt and baggy khakhi pants and white trainers a la Rajni in
"Badsha".
Sociologically too the tam or mallu man is severely sidelined. An
average tam stud stays in a house with, on average, three
grandparents, three sets of uncles and aunts, and over 10 children.
Not the ideal atmosphere for some intimacy and some full throated
"WHOSE YOUR DADDY!!!" at the 3 in the morning. The mallu guy of course
is almost always in the gulf working alone on some onshore oil rig in
the desert. Rheumatic elbows me thinks.
Alas dear friends we are not just meant to set the nights on fire. We
are just not built to be "The Ladies Man". The black man has hip hop,
the white man has rock, the southie guy only has idlis and tomato
rasam or an NRI account in South Indian Bank Ernakulam Branch. Alas as
our destiny was determined in one fell swoop by our nomenclature, so
will our future be. A nice arranged little love story. But the agony
of course does not end there. On the first night, as the stud sits on
his bed finally within touching distance and whispers his sweet
desires into her delectable ear, she blushes, turns around and
whispers back "But amma has said only on second saturdays..."
In one last effort here we attractive young men have taken on alter
egos which may interest some of you women:
1. Gautam Kumar Raja, will now be known as Joshua Perreira
2. Sidin Sunny Vadukut, henceforth will be known as Dev Chopra
3. Ashwath Venkataraman is now Vijay Desai
4. Sudarshan Ramakrishnan no more, from now he is Barath Sharma
5. Gautam Chandrasekharan will now respond to Alyque Shah
Do mail me any time for a meeting with one of the above. One week
notice if Italian or Chinese food is involved, or if the individual is
expected to dance."
end quote
Well it is funny if you don't take into account that they are walking away from a culture that took thousands of years to cultivate and refine itself.

Welcome home, Chen.
It was an interesting read and a much improvised version of what I had read on the same line years ago. It's fun, nothing else - with a pinch of truth!
Though it's a middle class thing (rather than south vs north), Southies are more focussed on the career I believe, and the fashion we know through our movies had been quite different from the bollyhood fashion, which is more in close with the west, though the gap is ever so decreasing. It may mean that southies find it difficult to befriend girls (of their choice), but not to secure wives, in my opinion!
It's not just about dates and such pulambals are not uncommon amongst college studs desperate for some 'kadalai'.
On a different note, this thinking encourages work-life balance (I mean just contemporary social life) and motivation to tone up themselves (good for health, if maintained!)
Regarding names, it's true that our names are long but meaningful! If we have difficulty getting others pronounce our names properly, we just have to crop it to a nick, rather than they making it a crap! For eg. Chen, Chan, Tham, Miz, Zan.. You (your name) have (has) lots of attractive potentials :-))
As an anecdote, I find the current generations in the south, like to name their offsprings with fancy north indian (or sanskrit based) names, as they seem to sound modern or better (why so?!) - Is it that our perception of modern names has changed.. and it needs lots of sh, shr, pra, gra sounds.. ending in 'th, sh,' etc., unlike grammatically right tamil endings (chenthamizan.. sorry, your name is a nice example).
PS: I'm persuading my wife with difficultly how our kids have to be named in proper tamil 'starting with 'a' my favourite first letter :-) No.. No.. stop your guesses - none in pipeline and we don't feel ready yet for a family?!

Hi Akil,
Ok let me try the unicode thing.. and get back :)
I feel jealous that you've got a week's off
Regarding the "guest of the day" thread, I started visiting only from last week as I was not aware of such a thread ( because of my time constraints) until I received a pm from Shakthi. It's quite fun there and the credit should mainly go to Shakthi for coordinating the process. Well done Shakthi !!

yes.. roshan,
it was great fun and was often enlightening to read the interviews of the guests. i kind of started with the current thread 3 (first guest) and, skipped the middle and finished with the final pages starting from this week.. and in one of the recent pages, Nov had given links to the previous two threads.
can you believe, i kind of went mad and finished 101 pages of the original thread and around 15 pages of thread 2.. and felt satisfied and went to bed... ofcourse, much to my wife's disappointment, when she returned from work (visited her place this week..). i'm trying to make up for it today!
though i had introduced her to forumhub and our thread longback, and had even shown a few pages, i had never encouraged her to participate. even today, i was showing some of our old pages and she appreciated our links and the discussions in our home thread, and how much they meant to me! But i still have discouraged her to participate as i told her..'it's kind of addicting' and that i may not feel comfortable and casual in her presence (though, not entirely true). and i don't think, she is much in to these discussions anyway, though she says she would be. i kind of guided her to orkut, which i came across recently.. where apparently her collegemates and cousins have got their own groups too.
btw.. i need to tell you, why i read up to 15 pages in thread 2.. that's where thamiz's interview happens. her answers are amazing and i'm really glad i have friends like her through this hub.
the one i would definitely like to be interviewed there is.. 'u know who'. do you know about his whereabouts, these days!
cheers.
(PS: i need to make up for my mistakes.. taking my wife out :) )
Shakthiprabha.

thx roshan. :)
( I tried suggesting, 'guests' from outside from diff field, TO ENRICH our hub and our experience here)
Since that did not shape up well, my feeling was... WHY NOT ALL HUBBERS, so many of us, intelligent, interesting and widely knowledged in many field. Talking to each of us would be interesting, fun filled and lively too.

PP, it was an amazing interview by you, a while back (on the new year's day) in Guest thread. As ever, I salute you with respect. Btw.. it annoyed me, when people asked questions suggesting that you are old. I never consider you as a old person and having grand children, especially of very young age, doesn't make you old. There are many more decades I would love to see you healthy in mind and physique, like I would like to see my my parents. And by that notion and by western standards, you are only middle aged.. and ofcourse, I'm only a kid :-))
Everyone, don't miss our bright star 'Roshan' in the guest thread.
I'm keen to see TN also interviewed there, as he never is so revealing about himself ?!

Just saw Guru hindi DVD, having waited to see in cinema theatre for a while. I don't suppose this DVD is original and I'm sure to have enjoyed the movie more in Cinema.
I liked the movie very much, I should say. There was smooth narration of a life story and the screenplay was good.(Are the rumours right that Mani has adopted some true life story of Ambani, and if so, how much has he justified to the real story? As I know, Mani always has escapistic attitudes to the contraversial issue on hand from Roja to Dilse to Kannathil Muthumittal).
But I liked this movie, like I liked his iruvar. Selection of characters is superb and everyone has done quite good job, Abishek and Vidya balan scoring the top places. Eventhough Aiswarya has done decent jobs, her beautiful face and gestures distract the audience from her character. And it's difficult to see her as character, unlike others, eventhough she had done quite a mature job as a middle aged and old aged woman. They could have made her look a bit plumpy atleast after she became a mother in the movie?! Madhavan has done underplayed quite well and his formal attire suits the 1970s arena, and so are many of the costumes and selection of cars to suit the respective decades, though I don't know much of these.
It may not be a great story, if it was a story rather than a life history, but it's a good movie in touch with reality, except for some of the overstage dialogues and the newspaper stuff writing ill about Mr Desai on the headlines everyday.
ARR's music in my opinion was quite opt for the movie, and definitely the first song and the song 'jod jod jodi yai, ek nahi do' make u dance - out of the 3 three songs fully picturised. And the other songs are well woven in to the movie, without standing out, though you are not able to appreciate the songs in full. But I certainly liked the songs better in the mood of the movie, than when I listened in the audio.
And suresh has mentioned about the cinematography by Rajeev Menon. Beautiful temples and lots of rain and water, shown especially beautiful in outskirts and not to mention, drenching Aiswarya (looking quite young in this movie) for her fans. Is it chalakkudi falls (punnahai mannan) again. It seems Mani showed this in my favourite kannathil muththamittal as well.
Finally, Mani has his own unique style and excells, when he shows romance between the married couple within their house in between their chores. Roja, Bombay (to lesser extent), Alaipayuthey, Sandakozhi sandakozhi (ayutha ezuthu) are fine examples. And he has certainly not failed the audience with the real life couple in this movie.
Sorry too much of praises (despite my movie experience interrupted with lots of phonecalls inbetween). I'm sure there are lots of negative features, but afterall he never poses himself as an art director. And may be that's what his speciality, an art film directed in a commercial way?!
(Have I said too much?!)

roshan.. thanks for sharing kamal's poem with naathiga nedi. i appreciate his maturity in saying it doesn't suit him (rather than everyone). i slightly disagree with him in seeing customs and rituals as religious acts rather than cultural and traditional beliefs. and such rituals are often prevalent amongst all religions, eventhough more in one, though they may not be commonly practised by everyone. but ofcourse, kamal is allowed to have more insight in to the religion that he has been brought up with and make his opinions on them.
but, i agree with this concept totally. i'm surprised he didn't touch on 'raagu kaalam' and 'ema kandam' which takes away 3 hours easily from the effective daylight. i'm sure that's why such practices are not there in the dark and cold western countries, who turn their clock around to save the day light

kaaNaamal pOnavargal, ulagamaE kaaNaalEnnu sonnaa mathiri..?!
en pangukku..
We had a nice trip to an island south of England last week (isle of Wight). At many places, we were only the two, having visited just before the spring. The weather was bright and good, though. And after longtime, this was a trip that we went on our own (without friends) - so it meant singing alone in those steep cliffs (very much influenced by Tamil films) and we had great time. one thing, I always make sure when I travel is to eat in a variety of good restaurants (the habit I got from one of my friends who I used to roam a lot with) - me being a veg and my wife being a non-veg, this ends up as a good challenge, except on Saturdays. We enjoyed our Thai and hot pub meals in the afternoon that we could stroll for long distance along the bays of that small island. Some of the attractions in the island were closed for maintenance in anticipation for summer, even though we enjoyed the quiet time we had together. <<This was a different experience compared to our last year's visit with our friends to a different set of islands -channel islands, south of England, which had French touch and one of the small islands amongst them didn't even had any motor vehicles allowed with only 500 residents. This group of islands is under independent government>>
On the final day of our trip in the Isle of Wight, we went to the Osborne house, Queen Victoria's famous family house, which her husband Albert had designed. Apparently in one of the hall there, Graham Bell demonstrated his telephone to Her Highness, which she wasn't impressed about. Out of the four wings, there was this Durbar wing, which was decorated with the help of an Indian artist/sculptor Balram Singh and had a lots of paintings of Indians and Indian scenarios, which Queen had personally painted for her, by sending an English artist to India, after she became the Queen of India when she was 57 years - especially because she couldn't travel in that age.
For some reasons, the palaces here make me feel they are heavily decorated with paintings of bright colours and give them a look of exhibition rather than an artistic appearance with a great architecture. May be because my eyes are tuned to a building's external look, which is concentrated in detail in Indian style added to the internal elegance. I can still remember the Mysore palace that I visited in my 9th standard, which took me with awe. Moghul palaces in the north are no less and even though, I haven't visited Fatehpur Sikhri myself due to lack of time, when we visited Agra during our college times, I can see its beauty from the pictures and what I have read.
Same applies, when I look at the old Victorian houses which were renovated for modern use. Even though they are costly, they don't appeal to me with their high ceilings, edges decorated in plaster and dark carpets. More so, as I see them as high maintenance.
But I should appreciate the interest and efforts they take in preserving their history (which only dates back to 1700s or 1800s in most places), antiques and architectures in their true form.
Just wanted to keep the thread active.. nothing else..

Hi Akil,
Good to read your "payaNa katturai" - quite informative. en pangukku oru siRiya payaNakatturai. I had a short visit to Maldives and got back yesterday. I was also there last April and need to say that the capital Male' has changed a lot within a year. Lots of improvement and it can be easily called a "mini Singapore". I also had to visit a remote Island ( nearly 35 minutes flying time from Male') I was under the impression that this Island would be too remote in terms of infrastructure and other facilities but it was no where closer to my imagination. We were supposed to visit the poorest of the poor and see their living conditions but compared to the poverty standard of other Asian countries like India, Nepal, B'desh, Sri Lanka et al the standard of living and quality of life are far better in those islands. I was a bit worried that I would miss the India Vs Sri Lanka match but again to my surprise - there were enought facilities to watch the entire match peacefully.
The domestic flight was just 40 seat capacity and I was a bit nervous initially but it was a smooth flying. On our way back to the capital - we were told that the Minister of Finance and Minister of Environment would be travelling on the same flight. I therefore expected tightened security and checking but again it was a simple affair. Both ministers followed the same process with the other passengers.
Overall it was a good experience and learning.

thanks for sharing your maldives experience. i'm sure you had a lovely time there. it's one of many places that i want to travel and one of a few that's in my priority list.
in fact, when we visited India this time, I thought of going to Maldives, thinking that I could organise it for a cheaper price once I go to Chennai.
(despite my liking for travelling, you know 'how i like uricha vaazapazam' and so, i like the packages. even cooler, if any of my friends could organise and then i just give them my esteemed company. now a days, i wish my wife could organise everything and i just travel with her.)
anyway coming back to the point, when i tried to organise maldives trip, i found that it was a peak season and the package would cost me more that what i had paid for my swiss trip from UK. it was more of a suprise, when I had enquired about the trip to Rajasthan (in palace of wheels), which was even more costly and gets booked 6 months in advance apparently.
so, eventually i had to settle with a day trip to a beach resort in Mahabs :-( + family/spiritual trips to thiruppathi and thirukkadaiyur!
<< am i hearing somebody saying that i'm repeating myself for 3rd time only >>

mm.. i agree with madhu, absolutely. thamiz.. ungalidam irukkum pala rasanai engalidam missing :-(
i happened to watch 4 movies in theatre recently. one last week and 3 this week (easter weekend) - didn't have any better idea than meeting some friends, eating out and watching movies with my wife?!
i think bollywood is progressing quite well and reaching more international audience for obvious reasons, lately. But i also think they have moved away from the conventional triangle love story and making some novel attempts: to state a few - parineeta, paheli, omkara, ekalavya - interestingly many of these were starring 'saif ali khan', amitabh bachan.
the ones i watched recently:
1. Namaste, London - good entertainment. a movie about forced marriage of a second generation girl - but from the groom's perspective; it was funny at times with good music.
It's difficult to relate to families who are extremely rich and even have royal acquaintance. Why can't this be about a mediocre family and their generation gaps?
2. The namesake - from Miranair. A must see movie, based on a novel. Irfaan khan and Tabu have performed so well, and so are the new generations. It's so easy to relate to this family hailing from Bengal.
3. Shakalaka boom boom - has the whole north India immigrated to the west? about a couple of Indian singers competing against each other to catch the market of the west and no one else? Upen Patel - I think he is one of the Bollyhood's new invent for Salman, John Abraham genre: Hope you understand what I mean. He acts in the movie Namaste, London too.
This story has some of the finest human emotions and egoes, which coud have only been made in to a better movie, if a director like the one who directed old 'abhiman' starring amitabh and jaya, had directed this one.
And this living together culture has so much invaded the bollywood.
And if you watch the movie with your orthodox wife, you get these dolby effects of fear, curses and cries - when aiswarya kisses hrithik in dhoom 2, when the camera enters the bedroom of a married and unmarried couple in the name sake and the car seats of the youngman trying to achieve by using an influential media person in Shakalaka.. :-))
4. Sunshine - a hollywood science fiction minus the usual sentiments of independence day etc. it was quite an entertainment. it was interesting to even think men attempt to add light to the dying sun. and there was a man amongst them who thought it was how it ought to end and it's not wise to go against the God's will.
overall, i had another movie weekend. i only wonder whether tamil filmdom would broaden its horizons in it's movie making and will start thinking of some novel stories and background, to keep in par with the rest of the world.
PS: i haven't yet seen paruthi veeran and mozhi. waiting to be surprised and impresssed.

wow.. ! enna aacharyam. Hope you are well. And you have found your own elite crowd that you don't come here anymore :(
I could read you after PP has written in a readable script. Thanks a lot.. ungaL artham kooda nallaa thaan irukku.. parimElazagar urai mathiri, merugEtRi.
yeah.. i agree there is more to it. as you could see the date (Pongal day, last year _ my then 'would be' wife's b'day).. the analogies explain the qualities, i thought I should have as a husband.. to await with patience, to adore, to caress, to love, to enjoy with, to relax with, and to sympathize and to protect. may be i didn't even score 50% in reality.. that's a different story  )
thanks for the belated wedding anniversary wishes.. having just read badri's signature, i'm trying not to give that much meaning to these things, temporarily :)
hope you are a father now, if i'm not mistaken. keep in touch, buddy.

There is an irony to the concept with which the poem starts and the concept with which the poem ends. They could have made two poems, and the later one, imho, would have been better on its own.

Kajan, I too was puzzled why your font in this thread was not readable while the kavithai in the kk thread on the same day was readable. So I went to the 'posting in Tamil' at the top of the page, got the jaffnalibrary.com's aid to convert your font. After losing my ekalappai keyman when my system was replaced I depend solely on this aid to post in Tamil.

i think, if you are copy/pasting from somewhere else (for example murasu editor window), you need to make sure that you start and close the post with TSC brackets, available in the reply window menu.
if you are directly typing using e-kalappai, you are fine, without doing this.
so 21 weeks now.. nice to know. all the best! nallaa paarthukkOnga..

When you use 'quote', the auto-tscii tags will not work correctly. You have to add the tags yourself, using the 'TSCII' button on the reply window.

'ummai' is a way of addressing a person in a respectable way - but usually it is used to adress a man
words like - um, umakku, umathu, ummai, ummudaiya are all related terms.

I have noticed in old movies - the Kadhali will not even address the Kadhalan by name.
Anyway, intha pAttil 'ummai' word varrathukku pirathaana kaaranam is to make the word match with the other line - which has 'nammai' (mmai sound )

Hi everyone,
If I remember right, is this the movie about attanathi and ? (slightly modified version of chErathaandavam by Bharathidaasan).
If this is the song sung by anjalidevi (MGR's wife in that movie), then the lyrics would suit the characters.
MGR wins Padmini in a dance competition in that movie  I think MGR's dance was much appreciated in that movie.
Padmini turns in to a saint, which is not the case in the original kavithai novel.
Aadiperukku forms an important event in that story (I believe it is a true story with historical evidence).
(PS: after all this, am I talking rubbish.. with total misinterpretation. )
madhu
21st May 2007, 07:17 AM
akil..
yes.. its the same story of Attan athi, Adhimandhi and marudhi..
anyway.. this song is for Padmini and anjalidevi sings "kAvirithAyE kAviri thAyE kAdhalar viLaiyAda poo virithAyE :cry2: "
it has been made as dance drama by Chandrakantha as "ponniyin selvi" and also by JJ as "kAviri thandha kalaiselvi"..
