IMHO the emoticon i hardly ever get to use but would love to
the emoticon used for confusion looks rather displeased no? :?
:) looks like a cheesy grin i rather like :smile2:
 seems too harsh usually you mean "oh my bad" not "oh woe is me"
:| i think this emoticon is very underused but that is probably how we look when reading threads we can't make head or tail of and frankly don't give a ****
but i guess the best of the best is :D it really brightens your day sometimes...
and :rotfl: is better than that weird lip flapping :lol2:
 this must be the emoticon that mods wear when seeing the extent of criticisms we add to pictures that rather control us than we control them...

PP, I simply attributed it to you and not coz of your comment. I personally think Blore sambhar is a phrase like "red herring" and has nothing to do with sambhar just as the former has nothing to do with herring :D

Another Saki admirer besides badri :D But I must say I am not impressed by the "reeling" capacity of the bachelor :x He is a selfish, wicked, clever man, mindless, reckless, least concerned about child-rearing ethics  Yes, I take sides with the aunt in admonishing him
There are many writers of that period Saki belonged to who wrote in the same vein, I mean the mild sarcasm. At present I have relapsed to my teen age fantasy :Agatha Christie :D

PP not really crazy of Saki, more of O Henry fan :) But I have very fond memories of this story.
When I was 11, my dad took me shopping in summer to get black shoes for school. We did that last weekend before school and unfortunately my size was the most popular and the "Bata Naughty Boy" model shoe ran out of stock. We had no other option but to go for a model which had velcro straps. (Anything other than the laced "Naughty Boy" model is banned in our school). So I spent the entire year dodging the Prefects during the Post Assembly Uniform Check which happened twice a week(When I gave the reason for my model, they laughed out loudly and told me to run around the ground as punishment). Plus a lot of suppressive/repressive measures - a class teacher who banned the purchase of ice-creams, vacating the school campus by 430pm(my parents actually told me to come late since I'd be alone at home!), banning students from bringing their own balls and bats(we would still play and sprint home with our kit and schoolbags when a staff comes across), conversing only in English, how many times our hide-and-seek games were interrupted by the swooping down of some teacher or the watchman and we raced to the nearest exit from the school or in worse cases got our balls and bats confiscated which means more punishment from parents, waiting till 5.30pm for our teachers to leave so we could buy a 50 paise icecream, doctors who warned that kids playing in the hot sun from February will get bleeding in the ear/nose......the list of tortures from our teachers/watchman/peons was endless. :hammer:
Each year we would label the last day of our Annual Exam as "Independence Day" - a day we could eat icecreams, chase each other around, splash ink, climb trees(and also gang-beat up a troublesome classmate) without fear of the consequences.
And this devilish 11 year old mind imprisoned by such stentorian measures found a perverted pleasure in this English lesson which loudly and derisively mocked at the Camlin wooden scale/Casuarina branch and so-conclusively proved that obedience is for wimps!
The academician who sneaked in this story into a textbook for 11 year olds deserves :notworthy:
I am sure this is one area where Stanherji will agree with me than PP ;) :D

PP,
Hope i havent added an extra ring of fire around your grandson(s) :)
My mother's friend was teaching her son "The boy stood on the burning deck" from casabianca. The kid convincingly wrapped it up saying the boy burnt to death coz of listening to his father's words :)
We had another story by Jan Mark in class 8, the story was like there was a feud between the music teacher and hockey teacher of a school, and a girl is caught in the crossfire. She misses practice for both which are held simultaneously and ends up not getting selected for either the hockey final or the school opera. We kids were delighted with the story and predictably our English teacher skipped this lesson for the exams :)
Take a look at this one:

Remember the play fondly
We put it up as our entry into the inter house skit competition and won a price (think it was second)
I can still remember my English teacher one Mrs Lakshmi's expressions when she was walking us through this play .Some of my most beloved memories are of school during classes 8 & 9.
