sorry it wouldn't be fair till i added these few other movies :D
3000 miles to Graceland
Big Fish
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
most appropriate yet tearjerking airplane movie i ever watched...that's alot to say since i never cry during movies...not even those hindhi/tami sentimental ones....my excuse is i was leaving loved ones and gathered so many memories from the trip...and this movie was about losing those cherished memories..
this might offend alot of ppl on this forum but it's because of the overly sentimentalism why i just can't stand soaps!!! Argh soooo quixotic and obvious and overblown and bad acting...awww im just asking for some hate now arent i?
anyways...nah Davie you are actually a good critic..even i got swept into the media pressure of watching that awful movie...ugh...i hated myself for that....could just spent the money on a much more entertaining movie...though the graphics were real good..

Madhurey was the first vijay movie i could not stand to watch...i turned if off before it was half way thru...even knowing that there was an alluding to a 'weepy flashback'...i just couldn't wait for it to get better...such a letdown after the excitement of Ghillie...

Yeah, I agree, Madhurey was a let down, after Ghilli. But I liked it because of the songs, and I saw Ghilli after Madhurey, so I liked it when I saw it in the theater. I think other Vijay Movies are crap though :x . I don't like him that much. My most favs are, Vikram, after Dhil, and Surya after Kaaka Kaaka.

the thought of cheaters and people who break trust is not something i feel is to be encouraged or even appreciated...it is truly sad how this has ruined so many ppl's lives...neways before any of you jump to ask what am i talking about in a movie thread...im talking about the very first time i have ever laughed so very hard at cheating...watching Rettai Vaal Kuruvi was so enjoyable though the seriousness was very much toned down...Mohan was brilliant...though im the wrong person to say so since i love all his movies.... :D
this idea has been redone so many times but has never achieved the same spark as the movie aforementioned....don't agree? you are welcome to prove me wrong  8) :D

so for u how an actor looks is more important?
do u think thats why he got the name superstar?
The reason why he is still making movies is just due to demand from his fans. I sometimes dont like telugus commenting about rajnikanth. I think its because of their ignorance about rajnikanth.
At the same time i dont hate other talented actors. But i hate to compare one with the other. coz each and everyone has their own chatzpa
i think about 99% of our people like him
India is not gona produce such kind of personality actor in the future.

I liked Anbe Sivam!! Simple story abt a journey between two strangers with different life experiences and perspective. Of course, there was the usual song and dance in the middle!! But for the better part of the movie, I liked the strong message abt the perception of stereotypes that many of us have. Particularly Indians as a whole!!
I was hooting with laughter abt the petty thief who's all decked up in coat and suit and reads and sounds intellectual!! Till the next day, when he left our hero Madhavan with nothing but high and dry!!!!
Querida
1st December 2004, 10:15 PM
Yes that is one of my very faves too! I find that especially our people seem to be easily swayed by a suit..or a location...or a title...shame because what usually ends up is disappointment...if everyone is seen as an individual then i guess there would be less reason to be surprised and shocked about these things....also less easy to be duped....though i have to admit there's always a chance you willl...

Davie boy :D you're taking more offense than Rajini himself would....looks are one of the things that appeals to fans...actors know this....they are not performing for select audiences only...they are performing for money...and for art but for money chiefly...it is an occupation after all...and if they pick up admirers (whoever they are) on the way then that's great as well..though i do agree on not comparing actors to each other...each has his own thing...

A really good movie with a good message was Ceran's " Porkallam" For those who haven't seen it, the message is that phisically challenged people shouldn't be asked for more dowry, etc. How a Drunken parent can spoil the lives of his children.
But in my opinion, I think that no one should be asked for Dowry.

Is that with Murali and Meena? :? If it is yes, I agree it was a very good movie :D i also think that one should not assume what others think...after all the protagonist should have known how is sister was taking this all....but still the message would not be so profound had it not been shown in such a way...shame even in real life that ppl have to drastically lose things to know their worth...
Surya
2nd December 2004, 02:15 AM
The movie really hit me in the last scene, when Murli says to Meena, that she was attractive, so many guys would come to marry her, but the woman that he wants to marry is handicapped, and she doesn't have the oppertunities, and they show the girl limping to her seat. That was a very well done scene. :D I've seen all of Ceran's movies after that.
Another good one is "Padavar Bhoomi" also by Ceran. have you seen it?
Querida
2nd December 2004, 02:32 AM
yes that last scene and the scene where his sister goes to hide in the haystack...especially when Vadivelu says 'why didn't you ask me to marry your sister" yes i have watched Pandaver Bhoomi as well...i liked how the ending...the father figure is really done well...i don't know the actor's name but usually he does his roles well

yesterday i watched Vishwathulasi...my dear brother raved about it but i didn't find it sooo wow....i dont know maybe the music....maybe the abrupt end...maybe no character achieved a true round character...maybe the character of Shiva was too presumed...maybe cause it was hard to relate the young thulasi to the older thulasi...maybe cause i rather would have watched it in malayalam than dubbed in tamil... :? :? :?

Maddy, Siddharth, and Surya did a wonderful job in the movie. Bharathiraja was the perfect tamil politician. :) The music by ARR was almost perfect for the background scores and the Songs. The only song I thought could be better was "Hey Goodbye Nanba." Other than that, Yakkai Thiri, Jana Gana Mana, and Unmai Sonnal were just perfect.
It's on my fav's list. :)

Your Sign quote says - "Nadhi Engae Sellum Kadal Thaney Thedi?"
It would be better put like this : "Nadhi Engae Sellum Kadal Thannai Thedi?"
And this is the best form - for representing thamizh using english - the proper "Transliteration" of thamizh in english:
"nadhi engE sellum kadal thannai thEdi?" :)
I'm reminded of "poongARRu puthithAnathu" song from "moonRAm piRai"! :)
By the way - do you read and write thamizh? I'm asking you if you can read & post here in this hub using thamizh scripts?? - I donno how many here want to post in thamizh but donno how to do it! :)

I have a request of all of you?
Do you guys think you could perhaps, include a synopsis of the movies that you find fascinating? You know, a review of the movie, its merits and demerits, where it gets bogged down, comments like acting skills of actors, dialogue, etc????
This way even if the rest of us have not seen your favourite movie, at least we get a gist of what it was all about!
What do you all say???? :)

Except for Anbe Sivam. Good Idea for a move, good screenplay, Excellent Acting, but it felt like he was preaching to much on Atheism.
Deepti,
I think that there was more communism in there than athiesm. That I thought was kind of a flaw, (in my opinion) in the movie.
But like you said, excellent idea for a movie. About two people going on a journey together. Both hae completly different view of life. etc. Its still one of my favs for screenplay, music, and acting.

There was no Athiesm nor Communism in 'AnbE Sivam'!!
nirosha sen
6th December 2004, 11:43 AM
I agree with Roshan! No, it was more of Spiritualism. A common concept embraced by most faiths of the true believers, in fact! That's why I found the whole concept of the movie refreshing! It simply dealt with belief in God, to its most basic level that I appreciated. Somewhat like the answers to what a child would ask of an adult, "What is God"???
No indoctrination or Dogma of any kind was mentioned except for Nassar's character who's performance gave us the yard of measurement of that fine line between a true believer of God and His miracles as opposed to those who only pretend to do so for the masses!
Brilliant screenplay, Pa!! :D

I think we all make good movie reviewers, Pa!! And I thank the person who started this thread too! Good move, Pa!! :D
Okay, my next question is with regards to Ayutha Ezhuthu? What do you think the Director was really trying to convey to the masses????
Roshan
6th December 2004, 12:23 PM
Nirosha,
In a nut shell .. Anbe Sivam spoke mainly about love and humanity - Every good and kind act towards a living being is Godly. That was the message!
As regards Ayutha Ezhuthu - The message was ' the educated youth entering politics'. When saying that the director failed to add sufficient weight to the main character - Micheal Vasanth - played by Surya. In my opinion the director could have avoided the songs and increased the number of scenes. Further he could have finished the flash backs of all three heroes before the intermission. Sidharth entering politics did not create an impact and Madhavan's character did not see a proper end.
Still it was a good and watchable movie for the superb performance of Madhavan, Surya, Barathiraja, and Meera Jasmin and also for the Technical aspects. I liked and enjoyed the film overall :)

There was no Athiesm nor Communism in 'AnbE Sivam'!!
I think Anbe'sivam is a bit of both Athiesm and Communism.
They say that there is god, but not in our conventional sense.
He say that every thing is God.
That's a crap.
Every thing is created by god, that's true.
But not every thing is god.
Because there are so many things in this world, which we feel very ugly n dirty and hesitate a lot even to touch it or even see it!
If we feel so what about god.
The movie slowly instills the thought that there is no actual god (athestic) but just beleive that every thing is god.
But, I liked that film for it's comedy!
nirosha sen
6th December 2004, 03:39 PM
Then that word is agnostic - giving no recognition to the supremacy of any one religion!
Atheism is itself a disbelief in the concept of a God.
What Kamal's character meant was, in every act of kindness is a hand of God in it! Like when Madhavan donated his blood for an injured child, at that moment to the boy, his saviour was his God! God's miracles happen through someone who acts as his instrument!
That in a nutshell, was how I saw and understood the movie!
Roshan
6th December 2004, 03:51 PM
That's what I said earlier Nirosha. Every good and kind act towards a living being is Godly - THAT WAS THE MESSAGE !!!
Not only the Blood donation scene - there are a number of scenes and diaglogues that depicts the main message !! Like the Nun character, The kindness Kamal shows towards the dog 'sangu' ( the villagers call it 'saniyan), Madhavan buying a rubber ball for that little boy in the ambulance, the pottikadai lady who consoles Kamal saying that he'd be perfectly alright after some time etc etc. There are many more and ofcourse the final scene.
If you carefully watch you'd realise even the initial comedy scenes between Madhavan and KH had the main message in a comical and subtle way.
nirosha sen
6th December 2004, 04:37 PM
Excellent movie Pa!! Except for the middle where he falls in love, etc! I suppose they simply had to show that for commercialising it as well as to inject the message that life could suddenly take the turn for worse, despite an ordinary, trouble free life.
Roshan

OK Nirosha, now tell me your opinion about 'Aytha Azuthu' :)
Surya
8th December 2004, 01:01 AM
That's what I said earlier Nirosha. Every good and kind act towards a living being is Godly - THAT WAS THE MESSAGE !!!
Excellent message, but there were some mentions of Communist Ideas.
Kamal's characterisation in Anbe Sivam is study on its own. A staunch believer in communism, a street play artist, an angry young man, a man who is love, someone who has been to the end of death and recovered, a common idiosyncratic man, a man suffering from disfiguration and above all a man full of love, are the various dimensions of this Kamalhassan prism.
Excellent work! Still one of my favorties. Maybe could have been better without the the strong communist ideological content. (The street play song talks about communism and anti-capitalism in detail. Pralayan, a street play artist, has written the full script for this song play.) but still much much better than most movies that come out now a days.

Surya

Vijay's movies are ok. Madhurai was nothing compared to Ghilli. I'm not sure about Thirupaachi. What is it a about. Probably just Thirupaachi (Vijay), being an undercover Aruvaal vendor, who does mocho things, and a flashback that shows that he's a cop, finally he kills the bad guy, and dances at the end with the heroin.
But I might be wrong, Thirupaachi might actually have a story.
The only movie that I thought was worth watching was Ghilli.
He's got talent, (dancing, etc.) but does not use it.

The only movie that I thought was worth watching was Ghilli.
The story of ghilli is in no way better than madhurai.
Both of them had a so called action story.
The only difference between them was their directors.
So, if Ghilli is good then it's because of it's director Dharani.
So the credit goes to the director who brought out the talent in vijay.

Roshan - Ayutha Ezhuthu was a good study of the need for a new wave of young Indians to take over from the Ghandian old guards!! That was a very good point the Director/Writer made!!
I agree with most of what you said. But as for Madhavan's character I understood him pretty well!! He's the epitome of a lot of misled young rebels who believe anything is possible if one lives by the sword!! It was the only means to an end!! With the kind of brutish stupidity and mule-headedness, he was indeed the perfect target to be used by sharper minds. Like the politician who played him like a fiddle!! He was the Rod that others wielded!!
It was precisely what his wife saw in him, all that raw anger and brute force, but lacking any real perception of the recurring trap he kept walking into!! His come-uppance at the end of the movie was fitting! What he never realised in a survival of the fittest test, was how dispensable he really was in the bigger picture!! Gangsters come and go like a dime a dozen.

well I liked Maddy's role because i found myself always second-guessing his motives...i had seen him as a good guy for so long that i could not get myself to agree that he would be so ruthless...this of course only added to the entertainment value of that movie...and of course Surya had a minimal role which could have been so much more...but really i also loved Bharathyraja's role as a politcian..because again an unexpected view of a different character...besides that everyone else were instruments in moving plot along..though some did well like Meera others like Trisha and especially Esha Deol did not...again of course this is my pov...all in all im glad that movie was made because it was great to watch :D

Best Tamil movies in 2004 (source: rediff)
1) Virumaandi
Conveyed the message of non-violence through a violent film. Virumaandi is an extremely violent film -- full of blood, gory deaths, mutilated bodies and abusive language. I particularly liked the style of narration- through the eyes of the two opponents (I will not call them hero and vilian)
2) Gilli
Biggest Tamil commercial hit of 2004. Vijay's acting, dancing and fighting talents well exploited. But the movie will be remembered only for the amount of money it made.
3) Autograph
Surprise hit. Blended commercial and artistic elements beautifully in this 'autobiographical' film.
4) New
Adaptation of Big (Tom Hanks)
What attracted people was the emphasis on sex and how the movie was replete with double tenderness. 3hrs of 'adulterated' fun.
5) 7 G Rainbow Colony
Realism and good music
6) Aayutha Ezhuthu
Disappointing (Now the name 'Mani Ratnam' increases expectations). Excellent performances from Surya, Madhavan and Meera Jasmine
7) Vasool Raja MBBS
Remake of Munnabhai MBBS. Kamal Haasan's mastery and his excellent comic timing.
8 ) M Kumaran s/o Mahalakshmi
People seemed to like the mother-son duo, and the movie was a big success.
9) Azhagiya Theeye
Cute, realistic film
10) Kudakkul Mazhai
The film did not fully live up to expectations. Kudakkul Mazhai satisfied neither the masses nor the critics.
Comments please :)

Virumaandi,
It was a bit violent. But its sad to think in some parts of the India, people still live like that. There was some exagertion, (did I spell that right?) but what are movies? The Screenplay by Universal Hero, Padmashree Kamal Hassan was mindblowing.
Ghilli,
Was probably the only Vijay movie that I enjoyed in a long time. The Pace of the movie was very fast.
Autograph
Simple, and Realistic, and also brought back many sweet memories for the audience. That was the secret of its sucess.
New
In my opinion, it was a bit obscene, for a tamil movie. But was worth watching.
Autha Ezuthu
Wonderful! Every aspect was wonderful in the film. There was one flaw with Meera's Charecter (Trisha). But other than that, everything was just great!
Kudaikkul Mazhai,
Was ok... did a pretty good job of showing the mind of a skitzo. Reminded me a bit of "A Beautiful Mind"

Perazhagan - Surya, Jothika, Vivek, Manoramma.
Simple, Really brought out Surya's acting talent. Good Music. The secret to its sucess, was even though the storyline was about a phisically challenged young man, with an unatractive face, falling for a beautiful young blind woman. There was hardly any sadness in the movie. Most of the movie was just comedy.

Sandeep,
There are a few tamil movies that come out every now and then that have good quality. But most tamil movies that make money are completle masalas. Movies like Madhurey, Thirumalai, Thirupaachi, Chatrapathi (has nothing to do with Shivaji, just a horrible masala with a couple thanpanguthu songs) Attagasam, Sullan, Dhool, Saamy and Giri are the ones that make money at the boxes most of the time.
The good movies that flopped,
Ayutha Ezhuthu, Kannathil Muthamittal, Anbe Sivam, Alavanthan. there are many many more good movies that have flopped. There are a few good movies that make money at the box-office but generally not.
I think that Tamil movies is going through a time of change. For the good or the bad, is up to the audience.

MY tops of the year 2004 r
MANMADHAN
KADHAL
VIRUMAANDI
AAYUTHA EZHUTHU
VASOOL RAJA
i dont know how everyone praises 7G rainbow colony
it is a worst vulgar  movie and one cant watch the movie along with the family  ,
i ask one qn cant selvaragavan take any other story other than PSHYCO ,LOVE,SEX  :?: subject,he says he has seen the movie along with his family, and they had said it is wonderful SHAME ON HIM
NEW movie is also vulgar
in 7G,NEW camera angles focus mainly on BOOBS,etc, iam astonished that peoples taste has bcome so low  !!!BUT the HITS of autograph, virumaandi makes me feel better 8) that peoples taste rn't so bad.
*scratches head* then how does manmadhan come into play if you found 7/G too vulgar :S u must have focuses on THE STORYLINE of manmadhan is my thinking.and if you do that 7/G is a good movie.New is not in the league of those two movies in genre etc but it was a fun and entertaining movie.

I like both type of movies.Just for fun i like to watch the Dhool & Ghilli type.
If I want to watch something to remember then it is of the other type.
Tho if I want to watch a masala movie I want it to be extremely entertaining like Dhool,Ghilli,Saamy etc. If the director goes out on the limb to do sumthin different I let things slide for example Shock was a very SLOW movie but it was sumthing different in Tamil films.

I saw Ayya yesterday!!
Much much better than Vijay's Thirupaachi! :D
Pras
9th February 2005, 01:36 PM
ayya ?
I saw it yesterday too, i was wondering myself if sarathkumar was writing the stories of his movies !
His movies are the same types (story wise and acting wise) :
- he is an army captain, or commando or rowdy or something, and he his hidding in a village for some reason (to find a villan, to escape a villan or for his thangachi) : movies from suriyan to arasu, aye, chatrapathi (and a lot more !)
or
- he his the son of the village naatamai, and the naatamai is sarathkumar too, father and son keep doing good things for the village and escape from all the villans : movies naatamai, suriyvamsam, the latest ayya !
or
- sarathkumar is the hero, his friend is napolean. At the middle of the movie, the villan does something to separate the friends, and he succeed in it ! at the end of the movie, napolean realizes that he had made a mistake ! movies thenkasipattanam, a movie that i can't remember the name and the latest ayya !
Here are the movies of sarath !
scorpio
9th February 2005, 02:11 PM
Good analysis Pras
But, isn't it 'Ayya' which is the only saving grace of Pongal releases, thanks to the treatment by Hari and fresh heroine!
Surya
10th February 2005, 02:16 AM
Yes, Ayya is the best of the Pongal Releases sadly. Thirupaachi - Typical Vijay. Horrible Masala. I'd give it a -10 out of 10!!
Devathaiyey kandean - Average. Not as much as expected.
Ayudham - Watchable for Sneha. But other than that, it's just another masala is what I hear. So out of all of the pongal releases, the winner is AYYA.
Wait, actually, Dancer is better than ayya in terms of work. The main charecter has put in a tremendous amount of work into the movie!! It's amazing.

Uthamma Puthran,

Vijay plays the character "Sukran." It is the role of the criminal lawyer who saves Ravi and Nadeesha when the lovers attempt to commit suicide after Nadeesha is raped.

19th February 2005, 09:22 PM
Pesum Padam, was not a BO success but wasn't a damp squib either. The response wasn't as overwheling as it ought to have been for a clasic like that (same's the case with MichaelMadana..)
Did you know, Kamal's original idea of a silent movie was shot down in the production discussion even thought the director (Singeetham) was enthusiastic. So Tinnu Anand (who plays the damn hilarious contract killer) wrote an outline script, albeit with dialogues. Kamal lost the only draft on purpose  so they were forced to revert to the silent film idea. The rest is history :)
All's fair in love and war, particularly so in a war against cliche !

Hard question, cos there are so many movies that I love watching time and over again. But I'll go with the actors and the best movies that I like in each..
Rajini - Thalapathy
Kamal - Nayagan
Vikram - Saamy
Vijay - Ghilli
Surya - Kaaka Kaaka
Ajith - Citizen
Madhavan - Minnale
Dhanush - Kadhal Kondean
Simbu - Manmadhan
Jayam Ravi - M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi
Sure, there are many more excellent movies of other actors too. But they dont come to my mind that easily.... :)

It had absolutely nothing... that too the last scene with danush in that military uniform  i cant stop laughing...
Vijayakumar's worst film.... after the kids do everything raunchy... they get VK's support.. horrible... and the scenes with thalaivasal vijay and his wife.. even i cant stand that..
on the whole, a horrible movie... except the songs... amazing songs... YSR's first huge hit i believe...

I saw it on sun tv, so all the obscene scenes etc were all cut off, and cencored. So I just saw the main plot. I thuoght that the screenplay was good, the thing with Dhanush as an armyu officer was a bit funny. But over-all, with all the obscene scenes censored, I thought it was a good watch.
Boys.......Hated it to the core! But I saw Boys on DVD so the scenes weren't censored. None of the elements expected from Shankar were in the movie.
