FR. THOMAS CHELLEN DESCRIBES THE ORISSA MOB ORDEAL

Fr.. Thomas Chellen, director of the pastoral center that was destroyed with a bomb, had a narrow escape after a Hindu mob nearly set him on fire. Currently undergoing treatment at a Catholic hospital in Orissa's capital Bhubaneswar , Fr. Chellen had this horrifying experience to share with Catholic News Service:

'They had poured kerosene on my head, and one held a matchbox in his hands to light the fire. But thanks to divine providence, in the end, they did not do that. Otherwise, I would not have been there to tell this horror,' the 55-year-old priest, director of the pastoral center at Konjamendi in the Indian state of Orissa, told Catholic News Service in a telephone interview from his hospital bed Aug. 28.

When a Hindu mob of 500 people broke into the pastoral center around noon Aug. 24, Father Chellen said he fled through the backyard with another priest and a nun.

'It was heartbreaking for us to watch from a distance the entire complex go up in smoke,' said Father Chellen, who had supervised the construction of the center that opened in 2001 and could accommodate 200 people.

'They vandalized everything and set it on fire. It has been reduced to ashes,' he added.

As the three watched from a distance, some other priests told them to flee.

'We fled to the jungles and came in the night to take shelter in the house of a Hindu friend and spent the night there,' Father Chellen said, adding that the second priest left them to join other priests.

The following morning, he said, the Hindu family moved the priest and nun to an adjacent vacant house and locked it to give the impression that no one was inside.

However, the Hindu mobs overheard the priest speaking on his cell phone, broke into the room and dragged him and the nun outside.

'They began our crucifixion parade,' said Father Chellen. The gang of about 50 armed Hindus 'beat us up and led us like culprits along the road' to the burned pastoral center.

'There they tore my shirt and started pulling off the clothes of the nun. When I protested, they beat me hard with iron rods. Later, they took the sister inside (and) raped her while they went on kicking and teasing me, forcing (me) to say vulgar words,' said the priest who has cuts, bruises and swollen tissue all over his body and stitches on his face.

'Later both of us, half-naked, were taken to the street, and they ordered me to have sex with the nun in public, saying nuns and priests do it. As I refused, they went on beating me and dragged us to the nearby government office. Sadly, a dozen policemen were watching all this,' he said.

Angry at his plea to the police for help, the mob beat the bleeding priest again.

Later, a government official and members of the mob took the priest and the nun to the police station, where Father Chellen said he was kicked in the face.

'The four-hour ordeal ended when a senior police officer arrived in the evening,' said Father Chellen.

The priest said one of the most hurtful things about the incident was that some local Hindus whom he knew were watching the events and ignored his requests for help.

BAIR VILLAGE, NEAR NOIDA: Falling in love continues to be fatal in western Uttar Pradesh. In what appears to be an incident of honour killing, two teenage lovers were brutally murdered and then set on fire in Bair village, barely 50 km from New Delhi. Some villagers said the assailants even chopped off the boy's private parts.

Class disparity, rather than caste difference, appears to have caused the savagery. Both teenagers were Dalits. But Rekha, an 18-year-old Class X student, belonged to a more affluent family than her lover Sonu, a 17-year-old Class XI student. The girl's father, Gulab Singh, is a rich farmer who also owns a ration shop. The boy's father, Raju, ekes out a modest living singing jagrans in the area.

The grisly incident took place in a field next to a forested area in Bair village under Kakor police station in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, when the two were allegedly found together in a "compromising" position by the girl's family around 10am on Thursday.

Enraged family members strangled her with her own chunni. The boy was beaten to death. The lovers were then set on fire on a pyre of maize husk. According to the police, the lovers studied in a local inter-college and had been warned several times by the girl's family against meeting each other.

Rekha's grandfather, Pooran Singh, who allegedly incited the father and led the onslaught, has been arrested. Gulab Singh and some other relatives involved in the killing are absconding.

As a precautionary measure, a police force, backed by the Provincial Armed Constabulary, has been deployed in the area.

Senior Superintendent of Police R K Chaturvedi rushed to Bair, 45 km from Noida.

Though the report was filed many weeks ago, police collected the medical examination report only last week after the media reported the issue and Sister Nirmala, superior general of Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, wrote to the state authorities seeking justice for the nun.

The medical examination report confirmed that she was raped. The state government suspended the inspector in charge of the Baliguda police station, where the nun had filed her complaint.

According to the nun's written complaint, a mob of about 40 to 50 armed men attacked a house at K. Nuagaon village where she along with a priest, Father Thomas Chellantharayil, had taken shelter after their centre was attacked.

The mob dragged her and the priest and took them to the deserted office of an NGO where she was allegedly stripped and raped by one from the mob. The priest was doused with petrol and beaten up.

They also paraded her naked on the streets, she alleged, saying that the incident occurred in the presence of a dozen policemen.

The state government has sent a police team to New Delhi, where the nun has taken shelter, officials said. The state government has assured all help and protection to the nun and said she needs to come to Orissa and identify the culprits.//

Indian rioters burn family to death

Rioters in southern India killed six members of a Muslim family by setting fire to their home after earlier clashes between Hindus and Muslims left four others dead and 15 injured in the same village, officials said.

Tensions have been high in Vatoli village since Friday when violence and looting erupted between the two sides, leading to four deaths, said Andhra Pradesh state Home Minister K. Jana Reddy.

Authorities imposed a curfew on Friday, but were unable to stop the deadly arson attack, which apparently occurred before dawn on Sunday, Mr Reddy said.

"It is a beastly and barbaric act," Mr Reddy said. "Police are investigating the case and we will catch the culprits."

Three children, including a two-year-old, were among the six burned to death, he said.

Vatoli is in Adilabad district, 170 miles north of the state capital of Hyderabad.

Muslim leaders called for better protection for minorities, especially in rural areas.

"Despite our repeated pleas and appeals, the government has failed to provide protection to the Muslims who live in remote areas and who have a very small population in those places," said Asaduddin Owaisi, a member of the lower house of the national Parliament.

Relations between Hindus and Muslims have been largely peaceful since the bloody partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan on independence from Britain in 1947. But mistrust runs deep and there are sporadic bouts of violence.

The worst violence in recent years was in 2002 in the western state of Gujarat. More than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed by Hindu mobs after a train fire killed 60 Hindus returning from a pilgrimage. Muslims were blamed for the fire.

It's so sad reading such news reports that say '4 dead' earlier '6 burnt' now etc. There's simply no value to human lives anymore it appears:-(

Most people read such news items without any sensitivity anymore - can understand to some extent as it's so regular and people get numbed to such occurences, though it's unjustified to become so.

Just think of it when someone close to us suffer such a tragedy...(as I post this I'm reminded of the 'nandhavanaththil Or ANdi' short story by JK)

Whenever I read news like this, I really ask myself whether the practise of religions, at least in public, should be banned ??

I don't blame the religions, but the people who follow them become so 'religious' ,that they kill their own neighbours if they belong to another religion.

IT WAS about 5:30pm last Monday when Sushil Kumar Naik heard knocking at what remained of his front door.


He peered through the holes left by the axes that the mob had used to batter their way in two weeks earlier. Outside stood a group of his Hindu neighbours, holding guns. The 43-year-old Indian air force officer was not surprised: he had been expecting them.

Like thousands of other Christians, Mr Naik has been living in fear since a wave of violence swept through the Kandhamal district of India's eastern state of Orissa two months ago. At least 59 people have died and thousands of homes and churches have been burned down.

Simmering tensions between the area's Hindu majority and their Christian neighbours were ignited by the murder of a hardline Hindu leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, on 23 August.

The initial Hindu backlash drove as many as 50,000 Christians from their homes. Now a new threat has emerged, and hundreds have been forced to renounce their faith and convert to Hinduism on threat of death.

The men who called on Mr Naik at his home in the village of Gadaguda last week were not in the mood for small talk.

"You'd better convert," they told him. "If you don't convert to Hinduism, you must leave this place."

They did not say what would happen if he stayed, but Mr Naik did not really need to be told.

The men outside were the same ones who had turned up in the middle of the night two weeks earlier, smashed their way in and set his home on fire. At the time, Mr Naik had been on duty at his air force base more than 1,000 miles away in Nicobar. The only people who were at home were his wife, Binita, 36, and his 70-year-old mother, Brundavati.

"We were sleeping at the time," his mother said, "And then people came from everywhere. We heard them shouting slogans and we ran to the school."

She started to cry, wiping her eyes on her yellow sari. "They were firing guns in the air. They burned most of our possessions. We only got out with the clothes we are standing in."

The slogans the mob had been shouting were those of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) – or World Hindu Council – the hardline Hindu organisation that has been blamed for encouraging Hindus to seek revenge for the killing of the swami. The VHP blames Christians for the murder, though Maoist guerrillas have claimed responsibility.

Those slogans were enough to alert Binita and Brundavati to the danger in time. But for their neighbours, Lalia and Mandikini Naik, there was to be no escape. The couple were in their 70s; they were simply too slow to get away.

"The men barged into their house. He couldn't move fast and they cut his throat with an axe," Binita said. "His wife was also cut."

The couple were taken to hospital, where Mr Naik died two days later. His wife remains seriously ill.

Sushil Naik's family were lucky; the police arrived within a few minutes, before the fire could consume the whole house. Even so, most of their possessions have been destroyed.

But they know it is only a matter of time before the men come back, and next time they might not be so lucky.

What makes it harder to bear is that they knew the people who attacked their home. Their family has been in Gadaguda for more than 100 years; the faces of the mob were those of their neighbours, people they had lived alongside and chatted to every day.

"If it was outsiders, they would not have known which house to attack," Mr Naik said.

When police officers eventually started to look for the culprits, some of the Hindu men took to the forests. From there, they appear to be able to venture forth at will to threaten those Christians who have remained in the area.

The Christians do not believe the police really want to help find the men responsible. They point out that smoke from the Hindus' cooking fires rises above the trees every night, but no-one goes after them.

"They were able to come to my house and threaten that we have to convert to Hinduism or stay away," Mr Naik said. "I don't understand what is happening. Even if we become Hindu, what guarantee is there that they will leave us in peace?"

It is a question many of Orissa's Christians are asking: many have concluded that their only option is to convert.

Last week, in the village of Sankarakhole, a little way down the road from Gadaguda, a total of 18 people converted. They were the only four Christian families in the village. Preti Singh Patra, the priest who carried out the ceremony, said the VHP had brought him letters from the families asking to convert. They had been happy to embrace Hinduism, he claimed.

Christians who have converted say nothing could be further from the truth.

In the village of Sarangagada, 32-year-old Jaspina Naik said she and her husband had been forced to take their three children to the temple to convert. "My neighbours said, 'If you go on being Christians, we will burn your houses and your children in front of you, so make up your minds quickly'," she said.

The VHP counters that many of those who are switching to Hinduism are recent converts from Christianity who had been attracted by the economic benefits that went with abandoning their low-caste status as Hindus. The VHP's leaders claim that many of those converts were so repulsed by the killing of the swami that they have been eager to rejoin the fold.

"They saw what happened to the swami – of course they want to come back, what's wrong with that?" said Gouri Prasad Rath, the VHP general secretary in Orissa.

He told The Scotsman the Christians had only themselves to blame for trying to entice Hindus to convert.

"If there is a problem today, I feel it is because the Hindus have lost patience," he said.

"Christians are giving Bibles to uneducated people who have nothing to eat and nothing to wear. They don't even know how to read it," he said. "If you go to their houses, they have a Bible and a photo of Jesus and, by keeping all these things, they think they have turned western.

"But you look at them and they still look like everyone else, and so what's the use of having such a religion when you have the same society as Hindus?"

Few of the 800 people crammed into tents in the Rudangia refugee camp a few hundred yards back along the road from Sushil Naik's home would see it that way.

For them, the idea that they can return to live alongside the people who turned on them so brutally seems little more than fantasy.

Rajma Naik, 45, fled to the camp after a mob chased her out of her home in Gonjugra village. The Hindus had been mocking them for their religion, she said. People were running everywhere, desperate to escape. In front of her, a woman stumbled as she tried to shepherd her eight-year-old son to safety.

"She was killed in front of me," she said. "She was running with her child. She was hit and she fell and they slashed her throat and then they got the child."

There was no way she could live alongside those people again, she said, not as a Christian, not as a Hindu.

"The Hindus say they will kill us," she said.

"In my village, we've been told that if we don't become Hindus, we will be killed. But I will never become a Hindu, even if I have to die."

NEW DELHI: The nun who was raped by a rioting mob in Kandhamal district of Orissa on August 25 on Friday demanded that the case be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Her face covered, Sister Meena Lalita Barwa made a statement in full view of the media, at a press conference under the aegis of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India. Her decision to meet the media comes two days after the Supreme Court rejected an application by the Archbishop of Cuttack, Raphael Cheenath, for a CBI probe.

Fighting back tears and choking on her words a couple of times, Sister Meena of the Divyajyoti Pastoral Centre, who was working in the K. Nuagaon area, said: “I was raped and now I don’t want to be victimised by the Orissa police. I want [a] CBI enquiry.” The State police had “failed to stop the crimes, failed to protect me from the attackers, they were friendly with the attackers, they tried their best that I did not register an FIR, not make complaints against police, police did not take down my statement as I narrated in detail and they abandoned me halfway.” Reading out her handwritten statement in English, Sister Meena narrated her harrowing experience including the rape on a veranda of the Janavikas building. Recalling the traumatic hours, the nun said she managed to escape for a while during which time she heard the crowd looking for her and say “come let us rape her; at least 100 people should rape.”

According to Sister Meena, the mob wanted to tie her and Father Chellan together and set them afire. The two pleaded with the Orissa State Armed Police to save them — with the sister taking refuge with the policemen and sitting between two of them to protect herself. But the two were once again pulled away by the mob. The crowd then decided to hand them over to the Block Development Officer, who, along with the mob, took the two to the Nuagaon police outpost.

Sister Meena said the mob was very friendly with the policemen. The inspector in charge of Balliguda — where they were taken — heard her out and asked whether she was interested in filing an FIR and whether she knew of the consequences of doing so. Sister Meena said she was taken for a medical examination around 10 in the night. The police were afraid of the mob attacking the police station and so took the two missionaries to the Inspection Bungalow.

The next day, when she was giving her statement for filing an FIR, the head constable asked her not to go into great detail. “So I rewrote it for the third time in one-and-a-half page. I filed the FIR but I was not given a copy of it,” Sister Meena said.

What do we do to ppl who pose very nice outside, talk well, dress well, but DONT KEEP their old ones, i.e. parents or in laws well at home?

Even on humanitarian grounds, the rooms are not kept smell free, bedspreads cleaned and none talks to them, except yelling sounds of "intha sappddu- thinnu" types. Neither the daughter or son or son in laws or daughbters in laws speak kind words to the old person. He or she is kept CONFINED to one room. CHENNAI/BHUBANESWAR: A 47-year-old Orissa priest, who was beaten by a saffron mob at the peak of the anti-Christian violence in Kandhmal, has died
in a Chennai hospital of brain injury.

If doctors confirm the blood clot in Bernard Digal, brain was indeed a result of the attack on him on August 23, he would become the first priest to have fallen in the madness of hate that has seen a nun raped and murdered.

Digal, treasurer of the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar archdiocese, died on Tuesday after an operation at St Thomas Hospital in Chennai to remove the clot in his brain failed.

Doctors said Digal had come to the hospital to see another priest from Orissa, Father Alphonse, and was diagnosed with dengue fever. The clot was discovered later. Earlier, Digal had undergone treatment at Holy Spirit Hospital, Mumbai, for his injuries.

A spokesperson of St Thomas Hospital said the priest had not come to the hospital as a patient, but as a visitor, calling on another priest who was undergoing heart treatment. "As he complained of intense headache, we ran tests and found that he had a blood clot in his brain. He underwent an emergency surgery on Sunday evening. The next day, he developed acute respiratory disorder and slipped into a coma," a hospital official told TOI.

All India Christian Council general secretary Abraham Mathai, however, claimed in a statement the priest had died of injuries he suffered in a mob attack in Orissa.

Kandhmal district police chief Pravin Kumar said he had no knowledge of the attack on Digal. "So many incidents took place. I don't know whether there was any formal complaint pertaining to the attack on him. The police can begin an inquiry into the incident if a complaint is lodged even now," he said.

Benjamin Simon, a Bhubaneswar-based travel agent, who had met Digal at a private hospital, said the priest bore the brunt of sectarian violence when he reached Sankarakhole parish on August 23 night after the killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati. He quoted the priest as recalling that night when three of them, including Father Alexandar Chandi of Sankarakhole parish and their driver had fled to the nearby forest and hid there after hearing that a mob was yelling outside to kill the missionaries.

"They stayed in the jungle for two days before going to a nearby village where they found the house and vehicle of another priest burnt," Benjamin said. "From there, they moved to the priest's sister's place in the same area to be informed that her house was also a target."

Benjamin said Digal and the two others finally decided to sleep in the church at Sankarakhole which was damaged and set ablaze. "Around 11.30 pm, miscreants came into the church. Seeing them, we ran in different directions. Our driver could run fast and I and Sankrakhole father were caught. I pleaded them not to kill him (Chandi), but they gave no heed and beat him with crowbars, lathis and axes. They stripped him. As some of them were beating him, others set fire to houses. Seeing the fires, I ran and was caught at a distance," Benjamin quoted Digal as telling him from the hospital bed.

The driver found him in the morning and took him to the Tikabali public health centre and later to the district hospital at Phulbani. Benjamin said after two days Digal was moved to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar from where he was taken to the Holy Spirit hospital in Mumbai on September 2. "He was discharged from the hospital in Mumbai after being fully cured. He went to Chennai like a pilgrim where he fell ill, was hospitalised and died," Benjamin said.

A resident of Tiangia village, Digal became a priest in 1992 and served the Archdiocese in various capacities. He is survived by one brother and two sisters.

BHIWANI: As Kaluvas, a village just three km from Bhiwani in Haryana, celebrated Diwali, the festive smiles amid the din of firecrackers and
ritual exchange of sweets may just have hidden a horror no one has till now either dared or wanted to speak about.

Almost 13 days after the incident, it now transpires that Rajender Shivran, who claims he couldn’t sleep under the weight of the unspeakable crime, had on November 1 given a written complaint to the Bhiwani SP’s office saying two teenaged girls of the Dhanak community were ‘‘attacked by machetes and axes and stones as soon as they got down from a car on Diwali night (October 28).

The villagers had waited for them after getting wind of their movements. They were unconscious, but alive, when some of the men brought out jars of kerosene and set them on fire.’’

The complaint, a copy of which TOI has retrieved, was quite shockingly dismissed by the police who have not acted on it even two weeks after the girls were butchered and burned. More surprisingly, Bhiwani superintendent of police Sanjay Kumer said he hadn’t received any ‘‘written or verbal complaint’’ though Shivran went with his petition right to the SP office.

Shivran, who had sent copies of the complaint to the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Women, DIG and DGP of Haryana, goes on to say in his chilling report that the two girls, whose fathers have been named, were waiting for them to come back after they went to some boys’ house to wish them on Diwali. The enraged family members even chased the car that dropped them home but couldn’t lay their hands on it.

‘‘The girls were alive when someone started pouring kerosene over their bodies. They were then dumped in the cremation ground,’’ the complaint goes on to say. ‘‘Everyone knows about it but is keeping quiet as most are in it together and those who dare to speak about it have been threatened with dire consequences.’’

Sources told TOI that though the Bhiwani police had received the complaint on the same day it was filed and even marked it for verification of facts with a rider to ‘‘report within three days’’, no attempt was made to investigate or even visit Kaluvas. Sanjay Kumar, however, said he has marked an inquiry into the allegations and police teams have been sent to Kaluvas to check out the facts.

இந்திய ராணுவத்தில் மதவாத நோய்?


மகாராஷ்டிரா மாநிலம் மாலேகாவ்ன் என்ற இடத்தில் நடைபெற்ற குண்டுவெடிப்புகள் தொடர்பாக, இந்திய ராணுவத்தின் லெப்டினன்ட் கர்னல் ஸ்ரீகாந்த் புரோகித் என்பவர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். இது, பயங்கரவாதத்தின் புதிய முகம் ஒன்றை வெளிப்படுத்தி இருக்கிறது. இது நாள்வரை இந்தியாவில் நடைபெறும் குண்டுவெடிப்புகளுக்கு பாகிஸ்தான், பங்களாதேஷ் ஆகிய நாடுகளைச் சேர்ந்த பயங்கரவாத இயக்கங்களே காரணம் என்றும், முஸ்லிம் தீவிரவாதிகள்தான் பொறுப் பென்றும் சொல்லப்பட்டு வந்தது. ஆனால், இப்போது... இந்துத்துவா அமைப்புகளைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களும் பயங்கர வாதத் தாக்குதல்களில் ஈடுபடுகிறார்கள் என்பது அம்பல மாகியிருக்கிறது.

மாலேகாவ்னில் நடைபெற்ற பயங்கரவாதத் தாக்கு தலுக்கு ப்ரக்ஞ்யா சிங் தாக்கூர் என்ற பெண் சாமியார் தான் மூளையாகச் செயல்பட்டவர் என்று தெரியவந்து, அவரும் அவருடைய கூட்டாளிகள் சிலரும் இப்போது மகாராஷ்டிரா காவல்துறையின் 'பயங்கரவாத எதிர்ப்புப் பிரிவால்' கைது செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இதை விடவும் அதிர்ச்சி தரக்கூடியது இந்த பயங்கரவாத தாக்குதலில் ராணுவ அதிகாரிகள் பங்கேற்றிருக்கிற செய்திதான்.

கடந்த செப்டம்பர் மாதம் 29-ம் தேதி மாலேகாவ்னில் முஸ்லிம்கள் அதிகம் வாழும் பகுதியில் நடைபெற்ற குண்டுவெடிப்பில் ஆறு பேர் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள். பலர் காயமடைந்தனர். கொல்லப்பட்டவர்கள் முஸ்லிம்கள் என்றபோதிலும் அந்தக் குண்டுவெடிப்புக்கும் 'முஸ்லிம் பயங்கரவாத இயக்கங்களே' காரணம் என்று வழக்கம் போல சொல்லப்பட்டது. ஆனால், போலீஸ் விசாரணை யிலோ...



'அபினவ் பாரத்' என்ற இந்துத்துவா இயக்கமே காரணம் என்பது தெரியவந்தது. 'அபினவ் பாரத்' என்பது 1904-ம் ஆண்டு வீர சாவர்க்கரால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட அமைப்பு. அது 1952-ம் ஆண்டு கலைக்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால், சாவர்க்கரின் சகோதரருடைய மருமகளான ஹிமானி சாவர்க்கர், 2006-ம் ஆண்டு அதை மீண்டும் தொடங்கி நடத்தி வந்தார். அந்த இயக்கத்தோடு, இப்போது கைது செய்யப்பட்டி ருக்கும் பெண் சாமியார் ப்ரக்ஞ்யா சிங் மிகவும் நெருக்கமாக இருந்துள்ளார். அவர் மட்டுமின்றி,ராணுவ அதிகாரிகள் பலரும் அந்த அமைப்பில் தொடர்பு கொண்டு செயல்பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். ஓய்வுபெற்ற ராணுவ அதிகாரி ரமேஷ் உபாத்யாயா என்பவர் அந்த அமைப்பின் செயல் தலைவராக பொறுப்பு வகித்துள் ளார். மாலேகாவ்ன் குண்டு வெடிப்புக்காக அவர்கள் காஷ்மீரிலிருந்து ஆர்.டி.எக்ஸ் வெடிமருந்தைக் கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த சதிச் செயலில் தொடர்புடைய ராம்ஜி கல்சங்ரா தலைமறைவாகியிருக்கிறார்.

இந்திய ராணுவ அதிகாரி ஒருவர் மதபயங்கரவாதக் குற்றத்துக்காகக் கைது செய்யப்படுவது இதுவே முதன் முறை. ''இதுவொரு அரிதான சம்பவம் என்றபோதிலும், ராணுவத்துக்குப் பெரும் தலைகுனிவை ஏற்படுத்தி இருக்கிறது'' என்று இந்திய ராணுவத்தின் லெப்டி னன்ட் ஜெனரல் எஸ்.பி.எஸ்.தில்லோன் ஒப்புக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார். இது ராணுவத்தின் பெருமைக்கு எந்தளவுக்கு குந்தகம் என்பது மட்டுமல்ல பிரச்னை. நம்முடைய நாட்டைப் பாதுகாக்க வேண்டிய மிகப் பெரும் பொறுப்பில் உள்ள ராணுவம், இப்படி மதவாத வைரஸால் தாக்கப்பட்டிருப்பது எங்கே போய் முடியும் என்பதும்தான் தற்போது எழுகின்றகேள்வி.

இந்திய அரசியலில் மதவாதம் தலைதூக்க ஆரம்பித்த நாளிலிருந்தே... இத்தகைய ஆபத்து இருப்பதை பலரும் சுட்டிக்காட்டி வந்தனர். தேர்தல் லாபத்துக்காக மதவாதத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தியவர்கள், அதிகாரத்தைத் தக்கவைத்துக் கொள்வதற்காக அரசாங்கத்தின் அனைத்துத் தளங்களிலும் மதவாத சக்திகளை அமர்த்தினார்கள். நீதித்துறையிலும்கூட அதன் பாதிப்பு வெளிப்பட்டது. பாபர் மசூதி இடிக்கப் பட்டபோது, நமது நாட்டின் அதிகார அமைப்புகள் எப்படி நடந்துகொண்டன என்பதைப் பார்த்தால்... இதை நாம் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியும். இந்துத்துவா சக்திகள் ஆட்சி அதிகாரத்தை இழந்தபோதிலும், அவர்கள் ஏற்படுத்திய கருத்தியல் செல்வாக்கு அப்படியே நீடித்துக் கொண்டுதான் இருந்தது. மதச் சார்பின்மையை முன்வைத்து ஆட்சியைப் பிடித்த காங்கிரஸ் தலைமையிலான ஐக்கிய முற்போக்குக் கூட்டணியினர், அந்த கருத்தியல் செல்வாக்கை வேரோடு பிடுங்கி எறிவதற்கு எவ்வித உருப்படியான முயற்சியையும் செய்யவில்லை. அதன் ஒரு வெளிப்பாடு அடையாளம்தான் மாலேகாவ்ன்!

இந்தியாவின் பாதுகாப்புப் படைகளில் சிறுபான்மை சமூகத்தினர் போதுமான அளவு இடம்பெறவில்லை என்ற புகார் நீண்ட நாட்களாக முன்வைக்கப்பட்டு வந்தது. இது குறித்து விரிவான ஆய்வுகளைச் செய் துள்ள ஒமர் காலிதி என்பவர், ''2004-ம் ஆண்டு புள்ளி விவரப்படி இந்தியாவில் உள்ள 11 லட்சம் ராணுவ வீரர்களில் 29,093 பேர்தான் முஸ்லிம்கள். இது 2.7 சதவிகிதம்தான். இந்தியாவின் மக்கள் தொகையில் முஸ்லிம்கள் 13 சதவிகிதம் உள்ளனர். இது அவர் களுக்கு நியாயமான பிரதிநிதித்துவம் ஆகாது!'' என்று கூறியுள்ளார்.

முஸ்லிம்களின் பொருளாதார நிலை குறித்து ஆராய்ந்த சச்சார் கமிட்டி, ஒமர் காலிதியின் குற்றச் சாட்டு உண்மைதானா என்று கண்டறிவதற்காக ராணுவ அதிகாரிகளிடம், நம்முடைய பாதுகாப்புப் படைகளிலுள்ள முஸ்லிம்களின் புள்ளிவிவரத்தைக் கேட்டது. உடனே, இந்துத்துவா அமைப்புகளெல்லாம் போர்க்கொடி உயர்த்தின. அதற்கு பயந்து மன்மோகன் சிங் அரசும் பின்வாங்கியது.

ராணுவத்தில் மட்டுமின்றி, துணை ராணுவப் படைகள், மாநில காவல்துறை களிலும்கூட இஸ்லாமியர் உள்ளிட்ட சிறுபான்மையினருக்கு போதுமான பிரதி நிதித்துவம் வழங்கப்படுவதில்லை என்பதுதான் யதார்த்தம். ரா, ஐ.பி. போன்ற உளவு நிறுவனங் களிலோ நிலைமை அதைவிட மோசம். ''1969-ம் ஆண்டில் இருந்து 2006 வரை ரா அமைப்பில் முஸ்லிம் அதிகாரிகள் எவரும் நியமிக்கப்பட்டதில்லை. அதுபோலவே 'நேஷனல் டெக்னிக்கல் ரிசர்ச் ஆர்கனைசேஷன்' என்ற முக்கியமான உளவு அமைப்பிலும் முஸ்லிம்கள் எவரும் இடம்பெற்றது கிடையாது. சுமார் பன்னிரண்டாயிரம் பேர் பணியாற்றும் 'இன்டலிஜென்ஸ் பீரோ'விலோ மிகச் சொற்பமான முஸ்லிம்கள்தான் இடம்பெற்றிருக்கிறார்கள்'' என்று சைக்கத் தத்தா என்ற பத்திரிகையாளர் 2006-ம் ஆண்டு எழுதியிருந்தார். ரா அமைப்பின் முன்னாள் செயலாள ராக இருந்த ஜி.சி. சக்சேனாவும் அதை அப்போது உறுதிப்படுத்தியிருந்தார்.

''உளவு அமைப்புகளில் முஸ்லிம் அதிகாரிகள் இடம்பெற வேண்டியது மிகவும் அவசியம். தற்போது நம்முடைய உளவு அமைப்புகளில் உருது, அரபி போன்ற மொழிகளைப் பேசக் கூடியவர்கள் மிகக் குறைவாகவே இருக்கிறார்கள். அனைத்து சமூகங்களிலும் உள்ள திறமையானவர்களைக் கண்டறிந்து நம்முடைய உளவு அமைப்புகளில் சேர்க்கவேண்டும்!'' என்று அவர் வலியுறுத்தியிருந்தார்.

ஐக்கிய முற்போக்குக் கூட்டணி ஆட்சி அமைந்த உடனேயே, இந்திய ராணுவத்தை மதச் சார்பற்றதாக வைத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கில் சில முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. ''பணியிலிருக்கும் போது ராணுவ அதிகாரிகள் வெளிப்படையான மத அடையாளங்களை அணியக்கூடாது!'' என்று உத்தரவிடப்பட்டது. அது மட்டுமல்லாமல், ''பக்திப் பாடல்களைப் பாடுவது, மத ரீதியான குறியீடு களைப் பயன்படுத்துவது, பூணூல் அணிவது போன்ற வற்றைக் கைவிட வேண்டும். ராணுவ அலுவலக வளாகங்களுக்குள் கடவுள் சிலைகள் எதையும் வைக்கக்கூடாது. பெண்கள் நகை அணிவது கூடாது. பொட்டு மட்டும் வைத்துக்கொள்ளலாம். அதுவும் தொப்பியால் மறைக்கப்பட்டிருக்க வேண்டும்!'' என்றெல்லாம் ஆணைகள் வழங்கப்பட்டன. ஆனால், அவை சரியான முறையில் நடைமுறைப் படுத்தப்படவில்லை.

இந்திய ராணுவத்தில் உள்ள படைப் பிரிவுகள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் தாக்குதலில் ஈடுபடும்போது முழங்கு வதற்கென பிரத்யேகமான யுத்த முழக்கம் உண்டு. பீகார் ரெஜிமென்ட்டுக்கான முழக்கம், 'ஜெய் பஜ்ரங் பாலி!' என்பதாகும். ஹனுமானுக்கு வெற்றி என்பதே அதன் பொருள். ராஜபுதன ரைபிள்ஸ் பிரிவுக்கு, 'ராஜா ராம் சந்த்ராகி ஜெய்!' என்பதே யுத்தமுழக்கம். கூர்க்கா ரைபிள்ஸின் யுத்த முழக்கம், 'ஜெய் மகா காளி!' என்பதாகும். ''இத்தகைய வழக்கங்களையும் தொடர்ந்து பின்பற்றிக்கொண்டு மதச்சார்பின்மையைப் பற்றிப் பேசுவது வேடிக்கையாக இல்லையா?'' என்று கேள்வி எழுப்புகிறார், அப்ஜித் பட்டாச்சாரியா என்ற ராணுவ விமர்சகர்.

இந்திய ராணுவத்துக்கு ஆட்களை எடுக்கும்போது, அவர்களைப் பற்றி மத்திய - மாநில உளவு அமைப்புகள் விசாரித்து அறிக்கை அளித்த பிறகே, அவர்களுக்கு வேலை வழங்கப்படுகிறது. ஆனால், ராணுவத்தில் சேர்கிறவர்களை அதன்பிறகு போதுமான அளவுக்குக் கண்காணிப்பதில்லை. பத்து, பன்னிரண்டு வருடங்கள் ராணுவத்தில் பணியாற்றிவிட்டு பலபேர் விருப்ப ஓய்வில் வந்து விடுகிறார்கள். அவர்கள் அதன்பிறகு அரசியல் கட்சிகளில் சேர்வதற்கு எந்தவிதத் தடையும் கிடை யாது. இதன் காரணமாக பணியில் இருக்கும்போதே தங்களின் எதிர்கால அரசியல் திட்டங்களுக்கு ஏற்ப அவர்கள் நடந்துகொள்வதும் அதிகரித்து வருகிறது. இத்தகைய ஆபத்து மாநில காவல்துறைகளுக்கும் உள்ளது என்பதை மறந்துவிடக்கூடாது!

நம்முடைய பாதுகாப்புப் படைகளில் அனைத்து மதத்தினருக்கும் போதுமான பிரதிநிதித்துவம் வழங்கப் பட்டால்தான்... மதச் சார்பு அபாயத்திலிருந்து நம்முடைய ராணுவத்தை முழுவதுமாகப் பாதுகாக்க முடியும். நாட்டில் உள்ள சிறுபான்மை சமூகத்தினருக்கும் ஒரு பாதுகாப்பு உணர்வை அதன்மூலம் ஏற்படுத்த முடியும்.

ஆனால், இது மட்டுமே தீர்வாகிவிடாது. நம்முடைய பாதுகாப்புப் படையினரை அடிக்கடி சிவில் பணிகளில் ஈடுபடுத்துவதையும், உள்நாட்டு பாதுகாப்புப் பணிகளில் ஈடுபடுத்துவதையும் தவிர்க்க வேண்டியது மிகவும் அவசியம்.

பாதுகாப்புப் படைகள் மற்றும் காவல்துறையில் பணி புரிகிறவர்கள் ஓய்வு பெற்றபிறகு அரசியல் கட்சிகளிலோ, மதச் சார்பான அமைப்புகளிலோ செயல்பட தடை விதிக்கப்பட வேண்டும். அவ்வாறு செயல்பட்டால், அவர்கள் மீது சட்ட ரீதியான நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கும்படி, சட்டத்திருத்தம் செய்யப்படவேண்டும். குறிப்பாக உளவு அமைப்புகளில் பணிபுரிகிறவர்கள் மதச்சார்பற்ற முறையில் நடந்து கொள்கிறார்களா என்பதை உன்னிப்பாகக் கண்காணிக்க வேண்டும். அவர்களுக்கு அவ்வப்போது இது தொடர்பான புரிந் துணர்வை அதிகரிக்கும் விதத்தில், பயிற்சி வகுப்புகள் நடத்தப்படவேண்டும்.

AURAIYA (UP): An executive engineer of Public Works Department (PWD) was allegedly lynched by some unidentified persons, believed to be supporters of the local BSP MLA here, about 100 kms from Kanpur. ( Watch )

According to a report lodged with the police by Shashi Gupta, wife of deceased M K Gupta, two unidentified men entered their house in Gail Vihar in Dibiyapur forcibly on Tuesday night and started beating her husband badly.

They locked Shashi in a bathroom and continued beating the engineer, injuring him seriously, the report said.

Later, local BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari allegedly reached the spot and left the seriously injured engineer at a nearby police station, from where he was rushed to the hospital, the wife said, adding that he was declared dead at the hospital.

ADGP (Law and Order) Brij Lal said in Lucknow that police were looking for Tiwari who is absconding. The role of Tiwari is under the scanner, according to police.

Tiwari is believed to have demanded a huge amount of money in connection with the birthday celebration of party leader Mayawati from the engineer, who is understood to have turned down the demand.

According to Shashi, the two unidentified men were addressing each others as Tyagi and Bhatia, police said.

"We have registered an FIR in this connection and probing the entire matter", additional superintendent of police, Sureshwar Mishra said.

MANGALORE: Close on the heels of the pub attack when Sri Rama Sene men went berserk, attacking girls while taking up the role of moral police, here
comes another shocker.

Shruthi, the daughter of CPM MLA from Manjeshwar in Kerala C H Kunhambu, was attacked allegedly by a group of Bajrang Dal activists when she was returning to her hostel in Mangalore after a brief holiday at home on Friday evening.

The brother of her classmate, Shabib, who was travelling in the same bus, was also thrashed by the suspected saffron activists, who took offence to the girl talking to a Muslim boy. Shruthi is a Class-XII student of St. Aloysius College in Mangalore.

Shruthi said she and Shabib were dragged out of the bus by four men, aged between 25 and 30 years, who forced them to an autorickshaw before taking them to a house in Padil area of Mangalore. ``They hit me and later they took turns to beat Shabib,'' Shruthi told TOI over phone from Mangalore.

Her mother Sumathi said her daughter met Shabib in the bus and some people might have informed the rampaging men that the two were talking to each other. The bus was stopped at Pumpwell Circle in Kanganadi, about 1 km from Mangalore. The attackers let off Shruthi after realising that she was an MLA's daughter, but assaulted Shabib, sources said.

Police said they hadn't made any arrests. ``We are trying to find out whether the attackers belonged to Bajrang Dal or Sri Rama Sene,'' said a police officer.

Sri Ram Sene's Karnataka state convenor Prasad Attavar denied his outfit's role in the incident. ``We are not connected with this. This incident is being pointed to us to sully our image,'' said Attavar.

Shruthi's father Kunhambu told reporters, ``A Muslim boy talking to a Hindu girl is a non-issue in Kerala. Goondas have assaulted them for no reason.''

Karnataka home minister V S Acharya told TOI that he learnt of the incident when the Range IG of Kerala contacted him at 6.05pm, while he was on his way to Mumbai. ``The culprits have not been identified,'' Acharya said.

IGP (Western Range) A M Prasad said a special squad had been formed to track the culprits. ``We will take up a complaint contacting the girl over phone,'' he said.

From the days Manu put it down the rules have been grossly misinterpreted and abused. The Mangalore pub incident is a barbarous act- there can be no second opinion about it. In our democracy there is no place for talibanism. A noble idea that should be advocated with dignity has been cheapened, tarnished by utterly crass sentiments.
Male chauvnism has always been there, and will continue to be there- it is a matter of basic male hormones! It should never be forgotten that mother Nature has favoured the other half also, ie, women, with another set of hormones and special intelligence/wiles to ‘handle’ men.
But we are evolving as more intelligent, more cultured, more conscious people. Lifestyles are changing, faster than ever, over the generations. My mil says her hubby doesn't know even to boil water in a stove. My hubby can make many basic items to see he doesn't starve. My son, a vegetarian, can survive, with no loss to his palate's needs or stomach's be he forced to live in Saudi Arabia, China, Germany or Egypt without his official cook(my dil!!!) accompanying him. This change has come about over the generations out of sheer necessity, not out of any domestic 'revolutionistic violence'! The thinking pattern is changing, roles are becoming flexibly exchangeable. BUT basically a woman remains a woman and a man a man. They have different needs, moods, sensualities, responsibilities.
The outrageous voices like the following are absolutely correct: (Today’s magazine section of ‘The Hindu’ carries the vociferous expressions of angry women). The arrogant, unacceptable, unforgivable statement of the founding member of the Sri Rama sene, Pravin Valke, a 40-year-old school dropout, quoted in Indian Express, Feb, 3, 2009:
‘Why should girls go to pubs? Are they going to serve their future husbands alcohol? Should they not be learning to make chappatis? Bars and pubs are for men only. We wanted to ensure that all women in Mangalore are home by 7p.m.’
The apt reply of the lady in today’s article: ‘In that quote you have a clear explanation of the mindset of these men who speak in the name of culture. Women should stay at home and make chappatis while men can go out and drink, rape or do whatever they wish. Thereby our “culture” will be preserved!’
Another lady thus summarises: ‘For the time being let us keep our eyes focused on the most important questions: what kind of a culture are we talking about when a bunch of flag bearers of religion and morality barge into a pub, hold women by their hair, slap and molest them? And how do they get away with it?’
Our own Bharathiyar spoke on similar note when he denounced maattai thozuvinil katti vaikkum pazakkam. Women are cattle or chattel! Agreed. The poet also said ‘kaRpai aaNukkum peNNukkum pothuvinil vaippOm’. GOK if he had in mind a male-bashing, male-aping ‘puthumai peN’ in his mind when he eulogized the emergence of a new brand of bright variety- emancipated, elevated and enlightened! Poor guy! And poor visions turning topsy-turvy. That is another separate tale of shame. Coming back to the matter of ‘culture’ can a word ever be more misunderstood, more misusedthan it is done for long? Again our sage-poet Thiruvalluvar has composed chapters and chapters on codes for both men and women separately and together, for a happy, healthy life- like kaLLuNNaamai, piRan manai nOkkaamai and a lot other noble traits to be espoused by both sexes.(This poor guy is sadly dubbed as another anti-feminist, male chauvinist! Alas! That is the fate of a voice of sanity and real concern!). While there are many wise people who understood the nobility, supremacy of womanhood and who spoke with sincerity for their good, there many who are ready to whip up sensation by inculcating false notions of women’s emancipation and equality! The MEDIA is all help in such acts of villainous motives!
It is important to remember that concepts like ‘culture’, ‘gender equality’, ‘morality’ and so on are like double-edged swords which need utmost care and discretion/discrimination while using them. A deeper understanding and sympathy and knowledge is vital for any good to happen to our human society.

Man rapes daughter for 9 years to get rich

A horrific story of a father turning into a monster, a sexual fiend and the victims are his two minor daughters, all because of his greed for money.

A businessman has been arrested from Mira Road in Mumbai on charges of raping his eldest daughter all because a self-styled tantric told him it would make him rich.

The story of brutal incest stretched for nine long years.

"The girls came to us and said that their father had sexually abused them since 2000. They said he wanted to be rich and a tantric gave him this advice. The tantric raped the younger daughter. Apparently the mother of girl supported her husband's actions," said Mukund Mahajan, senior police inspector, Mira Road police station.

The eldest daughter was only 11 when the ordeal began in 2000. But a few months back, the tantric then became tormentor. He began raping the businessman's second daughter, who is 15 years old. Finally the traumatised girls broke down before their uncle and grandmother.

"All this has happened because of the tantric. They should all be hung," said victim's uncle.

For now, the police have arrested the father, the tantric, and also the mother of the girls for abetting the crime.

இந்திய ராணுவமோ... சமீப நாட்களாக இந்தியாவின் சக்தி மிகுந்த போஃபர்ஸ் பீரங்கிகளை ஈழப் போருக்கு அனுப்பியுள்ளது. இந்திய ராணுவ அதிகாரிகளே அந்த பீரங்கிகளைப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த பீரங்கி குண்டுகளின் கடுமையான வெப்பம், விழுகிற இடத்தையே பஸ்பமாக்கி விடுகிறது. பதுங்கு குழிகளுக்கு அருகே விழுந்தால்கூட உள்ளே ஒளிந்திருக்கும் மக்கள் கருகி விடுவார்கள். மூவாயிரத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட புலிகள் வன்னிக் காடுகளில் இருந்து கிளிநொச்சி, பூநகரி, வவுனியா உள்ளிட்ட பகுதிகளுக்கு ரகசியமாக நகர்ந்து விட்டார்கள். சிங்கள அரசின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருக்கும் அந்தப் பகுதிகளில் இப்போது அவர்கள் தாக்குதல் நடத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இதனால் சிங்கள ராணுவம் எந்தப் பகுதியைப் பாதுகாப்பது, எங்கே தாக்குதல் நடத்துவது எனத் தெரியாமல் திண்டாடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. சில வருடங்களுக்கு முன் புலிகளிடம் இருந்த பகுதிகளை சிங்கள ராணுவம் மீட்டு வைத்திருந்தபோது, பிரிகேடியர் பால்ராஜ் தலைமையிலான 180 புலிகள் இத்தா என்ற ஊர் வழியாக குறுக்கறுத்து யானையிறவை கைப்பற்றி அதிர்ச்சி கொடுத்தனர். அதே போன்ற தாக்குதல்கள் மறுபடியும் நடந்து விடுமோ என சிங்கள ராணுவம் அஞ்சுகிறது.

போரில் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்காக எனச் சொல்லி இந்திய அரசு திரிகோணமலை மாவட்டம் புல்மோட்டை என்ற இடத்துக்கு மருத்துவக் குழுவை அனுப்பி வைத்தது. உண்மையில், இலங்கைப் போரில் காயமடைந்த இந்திய ராணுவத்தினருக்கு சிகிச்சை கொடுக்கத்தான் இந்திய மருத்துவக் குழு போயிருக்கிறது. இலங்கை மருத்துவக் கூடங்களில் விசேஷ மருத்துவர்களாக இருக்கும் பலரும் தமிழர்கள். அவர்களைக்கொண்டு இந்திய ராணுவத்தினருக்கு சிகிச்சை அளித்தால் ரகசியங்கள் தங்காது என்பதால்தான் புல்மோட்டையில் இந்திய மருத்துவக் குழு, ஒரு மருத்துவமனையையே நிறுவியது. இந்த பின்னணியைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளாத இலங்கை எம்.பி-யான அனுர திசநாயக, 'இந்தியா அத்துமீறிமருத்துவ மனையை நிறுவிஇருக்கிறது. அதனை உடனே அகற்றவேண்டும்!' என நாடாளுமன்றத்தில் கூச்சலிட்டார்.

அதற்கு பதில் அளித்த இலங்கையின் சுகாதாரத்துறை அமைச்சர் நிமல் ஸ்ரீபால டிசில்வா வேறு வழியில்லாமல், 'இந்தியாவைப் பற்றி தவறாகப் பேசாதீர்கள். இந்தியா உதவி செய்வதால்தான் விடுதலைப்புலிகளை நம்மால் வீழ்த்த முடிந்தது!' என இந்தியாவின் பங்களிப்பை பகிரங்கமாகவே போட்டு உடைத்தார். சமீபத்தில் சிங்கள மீடியாக்களுக்குப் பேட்டியளித்த ராணுவ அதிகாரி ஒருவர், 'வன்னியில் இப்போது போரை முன்னெடுத்துச் செல்வதே இந்திய ராணுவம்தான். சிங்களப் படைகள் பெயரளவுக்கு மட்டுமே களத்தில் இருக்கின்றன...' என்று சொன்னார். இடதுசாரி முன்னணித் தலைவர் கலாநிதி விக்கிரமபாகு கருணாரத்ன, 'ஈழத்தமிழர்கள் மீது தற்போதையை போரை முற்றாகவும் நேரடியாகவும் நடத்துவதே இந்திய அரசுதான்!' என பகிரங்கக் குற்றம் சாட்டினார். இலங்கைப் போரில் இந்தியாவின் பிரதான பங்களிப்பை அமெரிக்கா உள்ளிட்ட உலக நாடுகள் தெளிவாகத் தெரிந்து வைத்திருக்கின்றன. அதனால்தான் போர்நிறுத்தம் குறித்து வலியுறுத்தத் தயங்குகின்றன...'' எனச் சொல்லும் கொழும்பு பத்திரிகையாளர்கள், இந்தியாவின் இறுதிக்கட்ட முயற்சி குறித்தும் சொன்னார்கள்.

''சிங்கள ராணுவத்தின் பலவீனம் இந்திய அரசுக்கு விளங்கிவிட்டது. அதனால் இந்திய ராணுவத்தின் முக்கியத் தளபதிகள் அடங்கிய ஐயாயிரத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட படையை இலங்கைக்கு அனுப்பத் தயாராகி விட்டது. முல்லைத் தீவு அருகே இலங்கைக் கடற்பரப்பில் இந்தியாவின் மூன்று நவீன போர்க் கப்பல்கள் நிறுத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. 10 அடி ஆழத்தில் கூட பயணிக்கக் கூடிய துருப்பு காவி கப்பல் இந்திய ராணுவத்தினரை சுமந்தபடி முல்லைத் தீவுக்கு அருகே நிற்கிறது. இந்தப் படைகள் ஒருசேர முல்லைத் தீவுக்குள் நுழைந்து ஓர் இரவுக்குள் புலிகளின் கணக்கை முடித்துவிடத் திட்டமிட்டிருக்கின்றன. இந்த திடீர் தாக்குதலில் புலிகளை நம்பி வன்னிக்காட்டில் தங்கி இருக்கும் தமிழ் மக்களில் பாதிக்கும் மேலானோர் பலியாகக் கூடும் என அஞ்சப்படுகிறது. காங்கிரஸ் அரசு 'தேர்தலுக்குள் புலிகளை தீர்த்துக் கட்டுங்கள்!' என உத்தரவிட்டிருப்பதால், இந்திய ராணுவம் இனியும் காத்திருக்காது என்றே சொல்கிறார்கள். இந்திய ராணுவம் தாக்குதல் நடத்தப் போகும் அபாயத்தை உணர்ந்துதான் புலிகளின் அரசியல் பிரிவு தலைவரான நடேசன், 'நிபந்தனையற்ற சமசரப் பேச்சுக்கு தயார்!' என அறிவித்திருக்கிறார். இருந்தும்இந்தியாவின் கண்ணசைவுக்குத் தக்கபடி, 'போர் நிறுத்தம் என்ற பேச்சுக்கே இடமில்லை!' என அறிவித்திருக்கிறது சிங்கள ராணுவம். இந்தியாவில் நாடாளுமன்றத் தேர்தல் ஏப்ரல் 16-ம் தேதி தொடங்குகிறது. ஏப்ரல் 14 அன்று ஈழத்தில் தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு கொண்டாடப்படும். அன்றைய தினத்திலேயே தமிழீழத்தை மண்ணோடு மண்ணாக்கப் பார்க்கிறது இந்திய அரசு!'' என வேதனைப்பட்டார்கள்.

தமிழ் ஆர்வலர்களோ, ''கடல் வழியே பாகிஸ்தான் தீவிரவாதிகள் மும்பையில் கொடூரத் தாக்குதல் நடத்தியிருக்கும் நிலையில்... அங்கே பாரசீக வளைகுடாவில் ரோந்து கப்பல்களை நிறுத்தி வைக்காத இந்திய ராணுவம், இலங்கையில் தாக்குதல் நடத்தத் தயாராகிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இதற்கிடையில், இலங்கையின் உதவியோடு பாகிஸ்தானின் ராணுவ அதிகாரிகள் சமீபத்தில் கச்சத்தீவுக்கே விசிட் அடித்து விட்டுப் போயிருக்கிறார்கள். இதுபற்றியெல்லாம் கவலைப்படாமல் பழிவாங்கலுக்காக இந்தியப் பாதுகாப் பையே கோட்டைவிட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது காங்கிரஸ் அரசு. 'அடுத்து நாம் வருவோமோ... மாட்டோமோ...' என்கிற பயத்தில், ஆட்சி முடிவதற்குள் புலிகள் மீதுள்ள தன் வன்மத்தைத் தீர்த்துக்கொள்ளத் துடிக்கிறார் சோனியா காந்தி!'' என குமுறுகின்றனர்.

ஆனால் காங்கிரஸ் அரசோ, ''இலங்கையில் நிரந்தர அமைதி ஏற்படுத்துவதுதான் எங்களின் பிரதான நோக்கம்!'' என்கிறது.

மொத்த மக்க¬ளையும் கொன்று ஈழத்தையே மயானம் ஆக்குவதுதான் 'நிரந்தர அமைதி'யோ?

I understand there has been increased support since '04 but I don't think it was absent prior to that. podalangai may have something insightful to say here.

ஆனால் இந்தியாவும், பாகிஸ்தானும் தனித் தனியாக தங்களுக்கு பேருதவி புரிந்துள்ளதாகவும், இதனால்தான் போரில் தங்களுக்கு வெற்றி கிடைத்ததாகவும் இலங்கை ராணுவ செய்தித் தொடர்பாளர் தெளிவாக்கியுள்ளார்.

இதுகுறித்து நாணயக்காரா கூறுகையில், எங்களுக்கு இந்தியாவும், பாகிஸ்தானும் நிறையப் பயிற்சிகளை அளித்தன. இரு நாடுகளும் பெருமளவில் எங்களுக்கு உதவி புரிந்தன. நான் கூட இரு நாடுகளிலும் பயிற்சி பெற்றேன்.

நான் இந்தியாவில் நான்கு பயிற்சி வகுப்புகளிலும், பாகிஸ்தானில் 3 பயிற்சி வகுப்புகளிலும் கலந்து கொண்டேன்.

கடைசியாக நான் ஆந்திர மாநிலம் செகந்தராபாத்தில் பயிற்சி பெற்றேன்.

இரு நாடுகளின் நவீன ராணுவ தொழில்நுட்பங்களை எங்களது அதிகாரிகள் கற்றுக் கொண்டனர், பெற்றுக் கொண்டனர்.

இந்தியாவும், பாகிஸ்தானும் எங்களுக்கு அளித்த அதி நவீனப் பயிற்சிகள், வழங்கிய ஆயுதங்கள்தான் இன்றைய வெற்றிக்கு முக்கிய காரணம். அரசியல் தைரியமும், திறமையான ராணுவத் தலைமையும், கூடவே இந்தியா, பாகிஸ்தான் அளித்த பயிற்சி, கிடைத்த அதி நவீன ஆயுதங்கள் எங்களது வெற்றிக்கு முக்கிய காரணம்.

எங்களிடம் தற்போது அனைத்து வகை அதி நவீன ஆயுதங்களும் உள்ளன. சாதாரண ஹெல்மட், பூட்ஸ் முதல் எங்களுக்கு என்னவெல்லாம் தேவைப்பட்டதோ அத்தனையும் இந்தியா, பாகிஸ்தான் மூலம் கிடைத்துள்ளது.

இந்தியாவும், பாகிஸ்தானும் எதிரிகள் என்பது தெரியும். ஆனால் அதற்கும் எங்களுக்கும் எந்த சம்பந்தமும் இல்லை. ஆனால் எங்களது எதிரியை அழிக்க இரு நாடுகளும் தாராளமாக உதவியுள்ளன.

இரு நாடுகளும் எங்களுக்கு நண்பர்கள். எனவே யாருக்கு நாங்கள் ஆதரவாக இருப்போம் என்ற பேச்சுக்கே இடமில்லை என்றார்.

அதேபோல முன்னாள் ராணுவத் தலைமைத் தளபதி பலகல்லே கூறுகையில், எனது பதவிக்காலத்தில் 80 சதவீத பயிற்சியை நான் இந்தியாவில்தான் பெற்றேன். அதேபோல பாகிஸ்தானிலும் நான் பயிற்சி பெற்றேன்.

இந்தியாவுக்கும், பாகிஸ்தானுக்கும் எங்களது அதிகாரிகள் அடிக்கடி சென்று பயிற்சி பெற்று வருகின்றனர். எங்களுக்கு பயிற்சி அளிக்க இரு நாடுகளும் எப்போதும் தயாராகவே உள்ளன.

நான் ராணுவத் தலைமைத் தளபதியாக இருந்தபோது, எங்களுக்கு ஆயுதங்கள் வழங்குவதில் இந்தியாவுக்குப் பிரச்சினை இருந்தது. அந்த சமயத்தி்ல பாகிஸ்தான் எங்களுக்கு ஆயுதங்களை அளித்து கை கொடுத்தது.

சில முக்கிய சாதனங்களைத் தருவதில் கொள்கை ரீதியாக இந்தியா தயங்கியது. ஆனால் பாகிஸ்தான் தயக்கம் காட்டவில்லை. தாராளமாக உதவியது.

அதேபோல சீனாவிடமிருந்தும் நாங்கள் ஆயுதங்ளைப் பெற்று வருகிறோம். எங்களுக்கு முதலில் ஆயுதங்கள் தேவை, பிறகு பணம் தருகிறோம் என்று கூறினோம். அதை சீனா ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு ஆயுதங்களை அளித்தது. இருப்பினும் வாங்கிக் கொண்ட ஆயுதங்களுக்கு நாங்கள் பணம் செலுத்தி விட்டோம்.

அமெரிக்காவும் பயிற்சி அளித்தது..

அதேபோல அமெரிக்காவும் கூட எங்களுக்கு பயிற்சி அளிப்பதில் உதவியது. இருப்பினும் அவர்களின் பங்கு குறைவுதான். சில அதிகாரிகளுக்கு மட்டுமே அவர்கள் பயிற்சி அளித்தனர்.

வனப்பகுதிகளில் போர் புரிவது உள்ளிட்ட முக்கியப் பயிற்சிகளை நாங்கள் இந்தியாவில்தான் பெற்றோம். அங்கு எங்களுக்கு சிறப்புப் பயிற்சி அளித்தனர்.

அதேபோல, தற்போது நடந்து வரும் ராணுவ நடவடிக்கையின் ஒரு பகுதியாக முக்கிய உளவுத் தகவல்களையும் எங்களுக்கு அவ்வப்போது அளித்து வந்தது இந்தியா.

இந்திய கடல் பகுதிகளில் இந்திய கடற்படையும் எங்களுக்கு உதவியது (இந்திய கடல் பகுதியில் தமிழக மீனவர்கள் ஒருவர் கூட உருப்படியாக மீன் பிடிக்க இயலாத நிலை இருப்பது ஏன் என்பது இப்போதுதான் விளங்குகிறது).

எங்களுக்கு விடுதலைப் புலிகள் பெரும் மிரட்டலாக விளங்கினர். அவர்களது போர் உத்திகள் ஒரே மாதிரியாக இருக்காது. எனவேதான் நாங்கள் தடுமாறினோம். ஆனால் இந்தியா, பாகிஸ்தான் கொடுத்த பயிற்சியின் மூலம் அதை சமாளிக்கும் திறமை எங்களுக்குக் கிடைத்தது என்றார்.

இலங்கைக்கு உதவுவதில் யார் பெரியண்ணன் என்ற போட்டியில் இந்தியாவும், பாகிஸ்தானும் மாறி மாறி இலங்கை ராணுவத்தை பலப்படுத்தி விட்டு விட்டன. ஆனால் இது அப்பாவித் தமிழர்களை பதம் பார்க்கத்தான் உதவியுள்ளது என்பதை இந்தியா உணரவில்லை அல்லது உணர விரும்பவில்லை என்பது வேதனையான உண்மை.

"சீனாவும் பாகிஸ்தானும் தங்களது நலனுக்கு வாய்ப்பு உருவாகியிருப்பதாக உணர்ந்து, இலங்கையில் ஆழமாகக் காலூன்றத் தொடங்கிவிட்டன. இறுதியில் இலங்கையினால் நாம் ஒதுக்கப்படும் நிலைக்கு உள்ளாகலாம். வேட்டை நாயுடன் சேர்ந்து வேட்டை ஆடவும் எங்களால் முடியவில்லை, அஞ்சி ஓடும் முயலுடன் சேர்ந்து அதற்கு ஆதரவாக ஓடவும் எமக்கு மனமில்லை" என்று இந்தியாவின் முன்னாள் இராஜதந்திரியான ராஜீவ் டோக்ரா தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

ஏனெனில் மாபெரும் மனிதப் பெருந்துன்பம் சுற்றி நிகழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, செத்துப் போன ஆன்மா மட்டுமே பாதிக்கப்படாமல் இருக்கும். உலகம் உண்மையிலேயே இணைக்கப்பட்டதாக இருக்கும் எனில் இந்தப் பயங்கரம் குறித்த செய்தி உலகில் எங்காவது எதிர்ப்பைத் தூண்டியிருக்கும், உலகின் 24 மணி நேர செய்தி ஊடகங்களில் ஒரு சிறு பகுதியாவது இலங்கையில் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பது குறித்துச் சிறிய அளவாவது செய்தி வெளியிட்டிருக்கும்.

இன்னும் சுருங்கச் சொன்னால், இலங்கையின் சின்னஞ் சிறு பகுதியில் என்ன நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பது குறித்து உலகம் கவனம் செலுத்தியிருக்க வேண்டும். கொடும் செயல்களை செய்து முன்னேறிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் சிறிலங்கா படையினால் அந்தப் பகுதி நாளுக்கு நாள் சுருங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

சுருங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் அந்தச் சிறிய நிலப் பகுதியில்தான், ஒரு காலத்தில் தன்னாட்சி குறித்த தமிழ் இளைஞர்களின் நம்பிக்கை சுடர் விட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தது. இப்போது அந்தப் பகுதியில் வயதான ஆண்களும் பெண்களும், புதிதாகப் பிறந்த குழந்தைகளும்தான் இருக்கிறார்கள். இளைஞர்கள் அழிந்துவிட்டனர். தங்களின் தாயகக் கனவை தங்களுடன் வேறு உலகத்துக்கு எடுத்துச் சென்றுள்ளனர்.

தெய்வங்களுடன் தொடர்புகொள்வது கூட அவர்களுக்கு எளிதாக இருக்க வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறது. ஆனால் இந்த உலகில் உள்ள கடவுள்கள் கேளாக் காதினராகவும், பேசாத வாயினரதாகவும்தான் இருக்கின்றனர்.

உலகின் தலைவிதியைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் நடுவர்போல அன்றாடம் செயற்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் அமெக்காவோ, பாகிஸ்தானை சரிக்கட்டுவதில்தான் மும்முரமாக இருக்கிறது.

சாதாரணமாக, எங்கேயாவது மனித உரிமைகள் மீறப்படுவதாக உறுதியற்ற செய்தி வந்தால்கூட வலுவான கண்டனங்கள் தெரிவிக்கப்படும். அமெரிக்க ஊடகங்கள் வெகுவிரைவாகச் செயற்படும்.

உண்மையான, கற்பனையான மனித உரிமை மீறல் செய்திகளை அச்சில் ஏற்றுவதற்காக தொன் கணக்கில் செய்தித்தாள் காகிதம் அர்ப்பணிக்கப்படும். பிறகு குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்ட தரப்பு, அமெரிக்காவின் ஆணைப்படியான ஏற்பாட்டுக்கு அடிபணியும் வரையில், அனைத்துலக அரங்குகளுக்கோ மற்றவற்றுக்கோ இழுத்து வரப்படும். ஒரே ஒரு உயிர் போயிருந்தால் கூட, ஒரே ஒரு மனித உரிமை மீறல் நிகழ்ந்திருந்தால்கூட இவை எல்லாம் நடக்கும்.

ஆனால், இலங்கையில் நாள்தோறும் நடைபெறும் அடக்குமுறைகள் குறித்து எதையுமே பார்க்காதது போல, எதையுமே கேட்காதது போல அமெரிக்கா ஏன் நடிக்கிறது? இவ்வளவு நாட்களாக அமைதியாக இருக்கும்படி அதைத் தூண்டியது எது?.

அமெரிக்காவின் இந்த அக்கறையற்ற போக்குதான் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையின் செயலின்மைக்கும் காரணமாகும். அமெரிக்கா சைகை காட்டுமானால், ஐ.நா. கிளர்ந்தெழுந்து செயற்படும் என்பது உண்மைதான். அந்த ஒப்புதல் கிடைத்த உடனே, உலக ஆட்சிப்பணி அதிகாரிகள் மிகுந்த வேகத்துடன் செயற்படுவார்கள். அவர்கள் அதிகம்Œசாதிக்க முடியாவிட்டாலும் கூட, குற்றம் இழைக்கப்படும் நாட்டுக்குச் சென்று வருவார்கள், தொடர்ந்து அவர்கள் அங்கு சென்று வருவது, குறைந்தது உலகின் செய்தியையாவது அந்த நாட்டுக்குத் தெரிவிக்கும்.

உலகின் இந்த உயர்நிலை கவனம், அதைத் தொடர்ந்த ஊடகங்களின் பார்வையும் தடுப்புக்கேடயமாக மாறி குற்றம் இழைப்பவர்களைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்துவதற்கும், மனித உரிமை மீறல்களின் தீவிரத்தை ஓரளவுக்குக் குறைப்பதற்கும் உதவும்.

ஆனால், இலங்கையைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் இவை எதுவுமே நடக்கவில்லை. அக்கறையற்ற இந்தப் போக்குதான், சிறிலங்கா அரசை துணிச்சல் அடைய வைத்திருக்கிறது என்பது தெளிவு.

மேலும், இலங்கையில் உள்ள அப்பாவித் தமிழர்கள் தங்களைத் தாங்களே காத்துக்கொள்ளும்படி கைவிடப்பட்டனர். தொடர்ச்சியான குண்டுவீச்சுத் தாக்குதல்கள், மருத்துவ வசதிகள் இல்லாத நிலை, சுகாதாரமற்ற வாழ்க்கை நிலைமைகள், நாள்தோறும் பலர் மடிவது என்பதே அங்கு நெறிமுறையாகிவிட்டது.

மனித உரிமை மீறல்களை உலகம் வகைப்படுத்துவதிலும் சாதி முறை இருக்கிறதோ என்று வியப்படைந்தால் அதுதான். இல்லாவிடில் பொஸ்னியா, கொசோவோ தொடர்பாக போர்க்கால நடவடிக்கை போன்ற செயற்பாட்டுக்கு உலகம் கிளர்ந்தெழுந்தது ஏன்? சேர்பியாவைப் பணிய வைப்பதற்காக அதன் மீது குண்டு வீசியது ஏன்? தமிழர்களின் இரத்தத்தை விடவும் வெள்ளையர்களின் இரத்தம் மதிப்பில் உயர்ந்ததோ? பின்னர் ஏன் உதவி கோரும் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்களின் கூக்குரல் உலகச சமுதாயத்தின் காதுகளில் விழவில்லை? இதில் இந்தியாவின் நிலை என்ன? நமக்கு பொறுப்பு இல்லையா?

புவியியல், வரலாறு, இனம், மொழி, மதம், பண்பாடு என அவர்களுடன் நமக்குள்ள அனைத்துத் தொடர்புகளும் அதைத்தானே வலியுறுத்துகின்றன. எப்போதேனும் அமைச்சர் ஒருவர் அரை மனதுடன் முயற்சி எடுப்பார். நிதானத்துடன் நடந்து கொள்ளுமாறு வேண்டுகோள் ஒன்றை விடுப்பார். அதற்கு அதிக முக்கியத்துவம் இல்லை என்பதுபோல சிறிலங்கா அரசு விரைவிலேயே அதை ஒதுக்கித் தள்ளிவிடும்.

இந்த முடிவு பிரபாகரனுக்கு வேண்டும் என்பது போன்ற பழிவாங்கும் பார்வையை நமது பார்வையாளர்களில் சிலர் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். பிரபாகரனுக்கு எதிராக மட்டுமின்றி, விடுதலைப் புலிகள் இயக்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மற்றவர்களுக்கும் எதிரான இந்த வாதத்தில் ஒருவேளை வலு இருக்கலாம். அவர்களுக்காக யாரும் வாதாடவில்லை. அவர்கள் விடயத்திலும்கூட அதேபோல அண்மையில் நடந்த நிகழ்வு ஒன்று நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது.

மும்பாயில் பிடிபட்ட பயங்கரவாதி அஜ்மல் காசப் செய்த குற்றங்களையும் படுகொலைகளையும் தொலைக்காட்சியில் லட்சக்கணக்கான மக்கள் பார்த்திருக்கின்ற நிலையில், வழக்கு விசாரணையில் அஜ்மல் காசப்புக்கு விரிவான வதிகள் செய்து கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருப்பது ஏன்? அஜ்மல் காசப்பும் அவனது கூட்டாளிகளும் இந்தியாவின் பொருளாதார அடித்தளத்துக்கே அறைகூவல் விடுத்தனர். 180 பேரை படுகொலை செய்தனர்.

எனினும் அஜ்மல் காசப்புக்கு அரசு”தரப்புக்கு எதிராகப் பேசுவதற்கு வாய்ப்பளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. பிரபாகரனுக்கும் மற்ற விடுதலைப் புலிகளுக்கும் அவர்களது விதிப்படி நடக்கட்டும் என்று விட்டுவிட நாம் முடிவு செய்தாலும்கூட, பாதுகாப்பற்ற வயதான ஆண்கள், பெண்கள், குழந்தைகளை நாம் எப்படி விட முடியும்? அவர்கள் மீது நமக்கு எந்தப் பொறுப்பும் இல்லையா? அவர்களைப் பற்றி நாம் அக்கறைப்பட வேண்டியதில்லை என்று சிலர் வெட்கமின்றி வாதாடுகிறார்கள். நம்முடன் மரபுவழி உறவுள்ள இந்தியத் தமிழர்கள் பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே இந்தியாவுக்குக் குடிபெயர்வதற்கு திருப்பி அனுப்பப்பட்டுவிட்டனர் என்றும், மற்றவர்கள் எல்லாம் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்கள், அவர்களிலும் பெரும்பகுதியினர் பயங்கவாதிகள், இது இலங்கையின் உள்நாட்டு விவகாரம் என்று அவர்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்.

உலகம் தட்டையாகவும் இல்லை, இணைக்கப்பட்டும் இல்லை என்பதற்கு இத்தகைய மனிதர்களே வாழும் எடுத்துக்காட்டு. நமது உலகம் மற்றவர்களின் வேதனைகளைப் புரிந்துகொண்டு பரிவு காட்டாத உணர்ச்சியற்ற உலகம் என்பதற்கு இவர்களே சான்று. ஆனால் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்களுக்கும் நமக்கும் உள்ள உறவு வரலாற்று வழிப்பட்ட உறவு. அதுவே பலவழிகளிலும் அவர்கள்பால் நம்மைப் பொறுப்புள்ளவர்கள் ஆக்குகிறது. அத்தகையதொரு பொறுப்புணர்வை நிறைவேற்றும் வகையில்தான் இராமர் இலங்கைக்குச் சென்றார்.

வருந்தத்தக்க வகையில், இந்தியா அடிக்கடி அதன் சொந்த மக்களின் துன்பங்களைக் கண்டும் அசையாமல் இருந்து வருகிறது. இல்லாவிடில், உகண்டாவில் கொடுங்கோலன் இடி அமீனால் நமது மக்கள் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டபோது, நாம் அவர்களது உதவிக்குச் சென்றிருப்போம். பிஜித் தீவில் உள்ள இந்தியர்களுக்கு உதவி செய்திருப்போம். கரீபிய நாடுகளில் உள்ள இந்திய மரபுவழித் தமிழர்கள் இழிவுடன் நடத்தப்படுவதற்கு எதிராக உறுதியுடன் குரல் கொடுத்திருப்போம். அவர்களைப் போலவே, நமக்கு அண்டையில் உள்ள இலங்கைத் தமிழர்களையும் அவர்கள் விதிப்படி நடக்கட்டும் என்று கைவிட்டு விட்டோம்.

தேர்தல் மட்டும் வரவில்லை என்றால் அவர்கள் அப்படியேதான் விடப்பட்டிருப்பார்கள். திடீரென, அரசியல் கட்சிகள் போட்டி போட்டுக்கொண்டு அறிக்கைகளை வெளியிட்டு வருகின்றன. பதிலுக்கு மத்திய அரசு கடந்த சில நாட்களாக அது மேற்கொண்டு வந்த முயற்சிகள் பயன் அளித்துள்ளதாகக் கூறி வருகிறது.

கனரக ஆயுதங்களைப் பயன்படுத்தும் போர்ப்படை நடவடிக்கைகளை நிறுத்துவதற்கு சிறிலங்கா அரசு”ஒப்புக் கொண்டுவிட்டதாக அது தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

தமிழர்கள் சிக்கியிருக்கும் பகுதி சிறிய பகுதியாகச் சுருங்கிவிட்டதால், கனரக ஆயுதங்களைப் பயன்படுத்துவது தேவை இல்லை என்பதால், படை நடவடிக்கைகளின் அளவை சிறிலங்கா ஓரளவுக்குக் குறைத்துக் கொண்டுவிட்டது என்பதுதான் உண்மையான காரணம்.

நாம் நேர்மையானவர்களாக இருந்தால், அரசினுடைய நெருக்குதல் இலங்கையில் பயனளிக்கத் தொடங்கிவிட்டது என்பது உண்மையாக இருந்தால், இதைச் செய்வதற்கு இவ்வளவு காலம் அது ஏன் காத்திருந்தது? என்று மத்திய அரசிடம் நாம் கேள்வி எழுப்ப வேண்டும். ஆயிரக்கணக்கான அப்பாவி மக்கள் கொல்லப்படுகிற, முடமாக்கப்படுகிற, விதவைகள் ஆக்கப்படுகிற, ஆதரவற்றவர்கள் ஆக்கப்படுகிற வரையில் அது ஏன் காத்திருக்க வேண்டும்? எதையும் செய்வதற்கு மனமற்ற, அக்கறையற்ற கொள்கையை இந்தியா பின்பற்றி வந்திருக்கிறது என்பதுதான் உண்மை.

இதற்கிடையே, நமது அண்டை நாடுகளான சீனாவும் பாகிஸ்தானும் தங்களது படை சார் நலனுக்கு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு உருவாகியிருப்பதாக உணர்ந்து, இலங்கையில் ஆழமாகக் காலூன்றத் தொடங்கும் நடவடிக்கையில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளன. இறுதியில் சிறிலங்காவினால் நாம் ஒதுக்கப்படும் நிலைக்கு உள்ளாகலாம். நம்மால் வேட்டை நாயுடன் சேர்ந்து வேட்டை ஆடவும் முடியவில்லை, அஞ்சி ஓடும் முயலுடன் சேர்ந்து அதற்கு ஆதரவாக ஓடவும் மனமில்லை." என அதில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

My view on the hindu's biased coverage of SL issue. I am feeling that slowly the views of all tamils are amalgamating into one united voice of opposition to the govts in concern. This is not a good sign for the sake of India. Better wake up and heed to the calls of conscience Indian govt.

கிளிநொச்சியிலும் அதனை அண்டிய பகுதிகளிலும், அமைந்துள்ள சில வீடுகளில், 15 வயது தொடக்கம் 35 வயதிற்கு உட்பட்ட இளைஞர் மற்றும் யுவதிகள் அடைக்கபபட்டுள்ளனர். இராணுவக் கட்டுப்பாட்டுப் பகுதிக்குள் வரும் மக்களில் இளவயது பெண்களையும் , ஆண்களையும் தனியாக பிரித்தெடுத்து, சந்தேகத்தின் அடிப்படையில் இவர்கள் சிறு சிறு வீடுகளில் தடுத்துவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாக அறியப்படுகிறது.

இவ்வாறு கைதுசெய்யப்பட்டவர்களை முழு நிர்வாணமாக்கி இருவர் இருவராக கைவிலங்கிட்டு வீடுகளில் அடைத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும், இவர்கள் முழு நிர்வாணமாக இருப்பதால் தப்பிச்செல்லவழியின்றி வீடுகளில் இருப்பார்கள் என்ற காரணத்தால் இரணுவம் இந்த நிலையில் இவர்களை வைத்திருப்பதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது.

ஒரு வேளை மட்டும் உணவு வழங்கப்படும் இந்த மர்ம சிறைச்சாலைகளில் கழிப்பிட அறைகளுக்கு அருகாமையில் இவர்கள் தங்கவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும். மலம் கழிப்பதற்க்கு கூட இருவராக செல்லும் நிலை காணப்படுவதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள வீடுகளில் முழு நிர்வாணமாக நுளம்புக்கடியுடன் மற்றும் பல அவஸ்தைகளில் தமிழர்கள் கைதிகளாக உள்ளதாக எமது புலனாய்வுத் தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

குறிப்பாக பெண்கள் சொல்லொணாத் துயரங்களை அனுபவித்து வருவதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. பல சிங்கள சமையல்காரர்கள் தற்போது கிளிநொச்சியில் இராணுவத்திற்காக வேலைசெய்து வருகின்றனர். அவர்களில் ஒருவர் மனம் தாங்கமுடியாமல் முடியாமல் கசிந்த செய்திகளே இவை. பல வாரங்களாக அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இவர்கள் அனைவரும் அப்பாவி பொதுமக்கள் என தெரிவித்த அவர், அந்த மர்ம சிறைச்சாலைகளை புகைப்படம் எடுத்துத்தரவும் சம்மதித்துள்ளார்.

எம் இன மக்கள் இலங்கை இராணுவத்தின் கைகளில் சிக்கி சின்னாபின்னமாகின்ற ஆதாரங்களை சர்வதேச சமூகத்தின் முன் கொண்டுவரவேண்டிய பொறுப்பை மக்களாகிய உங்களிடன் நாம் ஒப்படைக்கிறோம். உண்ர்ச்சி மிகு அதிர்வு வாசகர்கள் நிச்சயம் நடவடிக்கை எடுப்பார்கள்.

வேலுப்பிள்ளை பிரபாகரன் அவர்களின் அலட்டல் இல்லாத இயல் பான ஆளுமையும், எளிமையும் மனதில் ஆழப்பதிந்து நினைவினின்று அகல மறுக்கிறது. குளிர்வசதி, மின்விசிறி இல்லாத அறையில்தான் நேர்காணல் நடந்தது. எட்டுமணி நேரம்
வியர்த்துக்கொண்டே இருந்தது. துடைப்பதற்கு டவல்கூட தேடவில்லை. மேஜையில் இருந்த வெள்ளை டிஷ்யூ தாள்களை எடுத்து அவ்வப்போது நெற்றியில், கழுத்துப் பகுதியில் வழிந்துகொண்டிருந்த வியர்வையை துடைத்துக் கொண்டார். அவரது தேவைகளை பார்த்துக் கொள்ளவென்று ""சேவைப் பணி அணி'' ஏதும் இருக்க வில்லை. அறை மூலை யில் மண்பானையில் தண்ணீர் இருந்தது. தாகம் ஏற்பட்ட போது தானே எழுந்து சென்று எவர்சில்வர் குவளையில் தண்ணீர் எடுத்துக் குடித்தார். இவையெல் லாம் சின்ன விஷயங்கள்தான். ஆனால் போர்க் கள வெற்றிகளும், உலகத் தமிழரின் உள்ளங்களில் உயர்ந்து நின்ற தகைமையும், தன் கீழ் பல படையணிகள் -என ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் காட்டுவதற்கு அனைத்துமிருந்தும் அவர் இயல்பாயிருந்தார் என்பது மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது.

மிகவும் நகைச்சுவையான மனிதர்கூட 60 நிமிடம் பேசினால் 50 நிமிடம் கலகலப்பாக நகைச்சுவை ததும்பிடப் பேசும் ஆற்றல் லட்சத்தில் ஒருவருக்குத்தான் இருக்கும். அத்தகையோரை நமக்கு மனதாரப் பிடித்துவிடும். வேலுப்பிள்ளை பிரபாகரன் அவர்களும் அப்படியொரு கதையாடி. தமிழ் சினிமா பற்றி பேச்சு வந்தபோது, ""எங்கட போராளிகளுக்கு ஹாலிவுட் சினிமா காட்டுவோம். ஆனா அந்த வெள்ளைக்கார பெட்டையளுக்கு மட்டும் கிராஃபிக்ஸ்ல தமிழ் உடுப்பு போட்டு விடுவோம்'' என்றார்.

பல்கலைக்கழகம் சென்று படிக்காத அவர், தன் முயற்சியால் ஆங்கிலம் படித்திருக்கிறார். நான் அவரை சந்தித்த காலத்தில் வெளிவந்து உலக அளவில் பேசப்பட்ட புத்தகங்களைப் பற்றி தன் உரையாடலில் மேற்கோள் காட்டிக் குறிப்பிட்டது எனக்கு வியப்பாக இருந்தது. புத்தகங்களெல்லாம் படிக்க எப்படி உங்களுக்கு நேரம் கிடைக்கிறது?' என்று கேட்டேன். வேலை களையெல்லாம் எல்லோருக்கு மாய் பகிர்ந்து கொடுத்துவிட் டேன். எனக்கு பெரிய வேலை, காயம்பட்டு நிரந்தரமாய் படுக்கை யிலாகிவிட்ட போராளிகளை அவ்வப் போது பார்த்துக் கொள்வதும் புத்தகங்கள் படிப்பதும்தான்'' என்றார். என்னால் நம்ப முடியவில்லை. தலைசிறந்த நிர்வாகி தானே மாங்கு மாங்கென்று எல்லா வேலைகளையும் செய்து களைத்துப் போகிறவனல்ல. தகுதியானவர் களை அடையாளம் கண்டு -வள்ளுவர் சொன்னது போல் - "இதனை இதனால் இவன் முடிப்பான் என்றறிந்து அதனை அவன் கண் விடும் ஒப்பிலா நிர்வாகியாய் அவரை நான் கண்டேன்'. உண்மையில் ""தலைவன் என்கிறவன் இலட்சியத்தை மேலாண்மை செய்கிறவன், தினசரி வேலைகளை நிர்வகிக் கிறவனல்ல'' என்ற புகழ்பெற்ற மேலாண்மை விதியை அவரிடத்தில் நிதர்சனமாய் பார்க்க முடிந்தது.

உணவு இடைவேளையின்போது பாட்டி ஒருவர் திடுமென உரிமையோடு உள்ளே வந்தார். பாதி பற்கள் போயிருந்த பாட்டி ஓய்வு பெற்ற ஆசிரியராம். சொத சொதவென வெற்றிலை பாக்கு சொதப்பிக்கொண்டே வந்தார். தலைவரிடம் வன்னி விளாங்குளம் பகுதி மக்களின் பிரச்சனைகள் சிலவற்றை எடுத்துக் கூறினார். தலைவன்-மக்கள் உரையாடலாய் அவர்களின் பேச்சு இருக்கவில்லை. தாய்-மகன் போல், அக்கா-தம்பிபோல், குடும்பத்தில் ஒருவர்போல் உரிமையும், நேசங்களும் தோய்ந்த அந்த உரையாடலை இப்போது நினைக்க நெஞ்சம் நிறைந்து ஒரு வகையான ஏக்க உணர்வில் அடைக்கிறது.

உரையாடல் போக்கில் பாட்டியிடம் பிரபா கரன், "பாட்டி, உங்களிடம் எனக்கு எல்லாம் பிடிச் சிருக்கு. இந்த வெத்திலை பாக்கு பழக்கம் தவிர'' என் றார். பாட்டி பதிலெல்லாம் யோசிக்கவில்லை. பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்த அதேபோக்கில் பொலபொல வென பொரிந்தார். ""தம்பி... இஞ்செ பாருங்கோ... உம்மகிட்டேயும் எனக்கு பல விஷயங்கள் பிடிச்சி ருக்கு. ஆனா இந்த வெத்திலெ பாக்கு விஷயத்திலெல் லாம் நீர் தலையிடறது எனக்கும் துப்புரவா பிடிக்கலெ''. ""வாழ்ந்தவர் கோடி, தாழ்ந்தவர் கோடி மக்களின் மனங்களில் நிற்பவர் யார்?'' என்ற புரட்சித் தலைவரின் பாடல் நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. சாமான்ய மக்கள் எவரும் வேலுப்பிள்ளை பிரபாகரனை சர்வாதிகாரியாகவோ, ஏன் போராளி இயக்கத் தலைவராகவோ கூட பார்க்கவில்லை யென்பதையும், தங்கள் தம்பியாக -அண்ணனாகவே பார்த்தார்கள் என்பதையும் வன்னியில் நான் சுற்றித் திரிந்த அந்நாட்களில் அறிய முடிந்தது.

புகழ்ச்சி எல்லோருக்கும் பிடிக்கும். தலைவர் களுக்கு ரொம்பவே பிடிக்கும். வேலுப்பிள்ளை பிர பாகரன் அவர்கள் எந்த அளவுக்கு புகழ் போதைக்கு அடிமையென்பது எனக்குத் தெரியாது. ஆனால் இதுவரை நான் நேர் கண்ட முக்கியமானவர்களில் மிகவும் நேர்மையான எளிமையோடு, தன்னுணர்வு சுயபிரக்ஞை இல்லாமல் அப்பட்டமான நேர்மை யோடு பதிலளித்த ஒரே மனிதர் வேலுப்பிள்ளை பிரபாகரன் அவர்கள்தான். ""தமிழீழ தேசியத் தலைவர் என்ற தகைமையை எவ்வாறு நீங்கள் உணர்கிறீர்கள்?'' என்ற எனது கேள்விக்கு அவர் தந்த பதில் காவியங்களைக் கடந்த வரலாற்றுப் பதிவாக நிற்குமென நினைக்கிறேன்.

இதோ பிரபாகரன் பேசுகிறார். ""பாருங்க ஃபாதர். இப்போ கனபேர் என்னைப்பற்றி கதை எழுதுறாங்கள். "பிரபாகரன் பிறப்பிலேயே வீரன், பதினைந்தாம் வயதிலேயே அவனுக்கு தமிழீழ கனவு பிறந்தது. பறவைகளை குறி தவறாது அவன் கொன்று வீழ்த்துவான். இப்படியெல்லாம் கதை எழுதுறாங்கள். உண்மையை சொல்லப்போனால் ஃபாதர் எனக்கு அந்த வயதில் தமிழீழமும் தெரி யாது, வடக்கு-கிழக்கும் தெரியாது. ஒண்ணும் பெரி தாகத் தெரியாது. வல்வெட்டித்துறை நூலகத்தில் நாளிதழ்களும் புத்தகங்களும் படிக்கிற மாணவர்கள் நாங்கள். ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நாளிதழ்களில் ""தமிழ்பெண்கள் கற்பழிப்பு'', "சிங்கள காவல்துறை அப்பாவி தமிழர் மீது தாக்குதல், சித்ரவதை என்றெல்லாம் செய்திகள் படிக்கும்போது ரத்தம் கொதிக்கும். மனம்கிடந்து தவிக்கும். எதாவது செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று துடிக்கும். ""சாகிறதுக்கு முன்னம் ரெண்டு சிங்கள ஆர்மிக்காரனையோ போலீசையோ சுட்டுப்போட்டு சாகணும்'' என்று தான் வீட்டை விட்டு ஊரைவிட்டு நாங்கள் புறப்பட்டோம்.

எங்கள் இலட்சியம் அன்றைக்கு மிகச் சின் னது. தமிழர் படும் துன் பங்களுக்கெல்லாம் எங்க ளாலான சிறிய பதில் - ஓரிரண்டு பேரை பழி தீர்ப்பது. அப்படித் தான் புறப்பட் டோம். ஆனால் பயணமும் பாதை யும் பலவற்றை எங்களுக்குக் கற்றுத் தந்தது. முக்கியமாக தமிழீழம் என்ற கனவினைத் தந்தது. தமிழருக்கென தனியொரு நாடுதான் கொடுமைகள், துன்பங்கள், யாவிற்கும் தீர்வு என்ற புரிதலைத் தந்தது. எங்கள் மக்களின் பாசத்தாலும் போராளிகளின் தியாகத்தாலும் எமது மக்களுக்கான போராட்ட இயக்கமொன்றை தமிழீழ விடுதலைப்புலிகள் இயக்கத்தை நாங்கள் கட்டி எழுப்பினோம்.

"பிறப்பால் போராளிகள் என்பதால் நாங்கள் போராட வரவில்லை. போராடினாலும் அழிவோம், போராடாவிட்டாலும் அழிவோம். ஆனால் போராடினால் பிழைத்துக்கொள்ள வாய்ப் பிருக்கிறது' என்ற புரிதலில் நின்றுதான் எங்கள் போராட்டத்தை மக்கள் போராட்டமாக வளர்த்தெடுத்து வருகிறோம்.

""இன்னும் ஒருபடி தெளிவாகச் சொல்வதானால், தமிழீழம் அமைத்து, அதற்குத் தலைவனாக வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தி லெல்லாம் நான் போராடவில்லை. உண்மையில் எனது காலத்தில் தமிழீழம் வரும் என்று கருதிக்கூட நான் போராட்ட களத்தில் நிற்கவில்லை. எனக்குப் பின்னரும் மேலும் ஓர் நாற்பது ஆண்டு களுக்கு இந்தப் போராட்டம் தொடர்ந்து நடப்பதற்கு தேவையான ஒழுங்குகளையும் ஏற்பாடுகளையுமே நான் செய்துகொண்டி ருக்கிறேன். அந்த உணர்வோடே நான் இயங்கிக்கொண்டிருக் கிறேன்.''

அவரது பதிலை இன்று 7 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப்பின் நினைக்கிற போதும் சிந்தை சிலிர்க்கிறது. விடுதலைப் போராட்டம் பற்றி அவர் கொண்டிருந்த யதார்த்தமான புரிதல் தெளிவுகாண வியப்புணர்வொன்று விரிகிறது. அம் மாமனிதன் இன்று களமாடி நிற்கும் முல்லைத்தீவு காடுகள் நோக்கி மனக்கண்கள் திரும்புகின்றன.

உணர்ச்சிக் கவிஞர் காசி ஆனந்தன் தலைமையில், கேமரா கவிஞர் பாலுமகேந்திர முதல் பிரதியை வெளியிட, தமிழ்க் குலம் தழைக்க தன்னையே எரித்துக் கொண்ட தியாகச் சுடர் முத்துக் குமரனின் தந்தை குமரேசன் பெற்றுக் கொண்டார்.

பின்னர் பேசிய சீமான், ஒரு மணிநேரம் உணர்ச்சிமயமான உரை நிகழ்த்தினார்.

Caste and the world

Efforts to treat caste-based discrimination on a par with racial discrimination at the recent Durban Review Conference did not fructify because caste remains an intractable issue for the international audience. Why is it that only Dalits are vocal about this problem?
What is shocking has been the near-total absence of any debate in the Indian public sphere about the setback...

Caste has killed public spirit. Caste has destroyed the sense of public charity. Caste has made public opinion impossible… Virtue has become caste-ridden and morality has become caste-bound.

The efforts to internationalise the issue of caste-based discrimination against the 260 million Dalits in South Asia and treat it on a par with racial discrimination, which had received a boost in 2001 at the United Nations World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) held in Durban, suffered a serious setback at the Durban Review Conference held recently (April 20-24, 2009) in Geneva. While in 2001, WCAR had discussed caste euphemistically as “discrimination based on work and descent”, in line with terminology devised by the UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the outcome document of the Durban Review Conference (DRC) has evaded even an allusion to caste.

The DRC’s mandate was to review the Durban Declaration and Program of Action — an elaborate document that was the outcome of the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. Since the 2001 Durban Declaration had explicitly expressed sympathy for Palestinians “under foreign occupation”, there was a sustained United States-Israel effort to debunk the UN document. The media attention last month was therefore focused on the boycott of the DRC by 10 UN member-States led by the US and its cohorts, Israel, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and five EU countries.

Absence of debate
What is shocking has been the near-total absence of any debate in the Indian public sphere about the setback to the fight against caste at the international level. WCAR 2001 had been a landmark event for the Dalit lobby, led primarily by the National Council for Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR). But even in 2001, the battle had only been half-won. After intense lobbying, the preparatory document for WCAR had included Paragraph 73, urging governments to “prohibit and redress discrimination on the basis of work and descent.” The Indian government then mounted pressure on other governments to jettison this paragraph from the final document. The Dalit effort, scuttled diplomatically in intergovernmental meetings, had a sympathetic hearing at nongovernmental forums.

Despite constitutional guarantees and laws, the Dalits in Indian society are separate and unequal. Statistics provided by statutory bodies reveal that routine violence against Dalits is part of the Indian landscape. That every hour two Dalits are assaulted, every day three Dalit women are raped, two Dalits are murdered and two Dalit houses burnt — even if these are grossly underreported — does not make even a dent on public consciousness.

While New Delhi is being spruced up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, it is yet to adopt the Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993. As the capital was gloating over the diplomatic success in stalling the Dalit caucus’ bid to mobilise international opinion on caste discrimination at the UN, on May 9, the Safai Karamchari Andolan offered detailed evidence to a disbelieving Supreme court bench listing individual manual scavengers and the location of houses where they clean dry latrines in north-east Delhi. According to information obtained under the Right to Information Act, it was submitted that 1,085 scavengers are still working in Delhi.

India’s dogged resistance to discussing caste at UN forums comes in stark contrast to the official positions of other South Asian nations. Looking at the gains from DRC, Rikke Nöhrlind, coordinator of the International Dalit Solidarity Network in Copenhagen, says: “Several other caste-affected countries such as Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Mauritius addressed the issue in their statements.” Nepal’s Ambassador Dinesh Bhattarai made an explicit reference to the need for a global fight against the “evils of untouchability and caste discrimination”. Malik Ahmad Khan, Pakistan’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, emphasised that victims of racism must include those who are “marginsalised on the basis of descent and caste”. Both Nepal and Pakistan grapple with huge populations of “untouchables” and are willing to come clean about it.

Glossing the issue
In contrast, Vivek Katju, the Indian delegate at DRC, harked back to India’s experience of colonialism that was “based on racism” and reiterated the several provisions in the Constitution that recognise the rights of minorities. There was no mention of caste. Henri Tiphagne of People’s Watch, Tamil Nadu, bore witness to a “depressing” statement at a side-event of the DRC chaired by Gay McDougal, UN’s Independent Expert on Minority Issues: the National Human Rights Commission member, Justice Babulal Chandulal Patel, referred to caste discrimination as “a family matter”.

There are three fundamental reasons why India’s system of “hidden apartheid” would perhaps never be seriously subjected to international scrutiny, unlike, say, apartheid in South Africa, an issue on which India, too, was righteously and hypocritically indignant. First, the Indian State believes it has the right to do what it wants about the caste system and with its 170 million Dalits — “a family matter”. Even as an atrocity is committed against a Dalit every 18 minutes according to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, a list of counterclaims is unfurled: that the drafting of the Indian Constitution was overseen by a Dalit, B.R. Ambedkar; that K.R. Narayanan rose to be the President of India; that we have a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who is Dalit; that we have a mandated number of Dalits entering legislatures and Parliament; that India’s most populous State is governed by a Dalit woman, so on and so forth. Such a projection of unique yet manageable contradictions — the political empowerment of a few coexisting with increasing everyday violence against many — allows India to gloss over the appalling gap between legal provisions and the proven inability of the State to implement these, compounded by the fact that antiquated societal norms outweigh rule of law.

Secondly, some eminent sociologists had argued, in the countdown to WCAR 2001, that caste-based discrimination is not comparable to racism. As many foreigners ask: how do we know who is from which caste when everyone looks alike? It is this apparent invisibilisation of the debilitating hierarchies of caste, and the ability of elite Indians to claim victimhood as one-time subjects of colonial racism, that help elide the question of caste. Such interpretations suffer from a facile biological reading of racism, failing to see racial discrimination and caste discrimination as sociologically and politically constructed. Indians practising caste do know how to place the other person’s caste within minutes of a meeting or conversation. Surnames, accents, food habits, place of origin or residence and other personal preferences are giveaways. Yet, the intractability of caste for an international audience persists.

Everyone’s problem
Thirdly, and crucially, as long as the fight against caste is seen as the problem and concern of only Dalits-as-victims, it shall not be possible to mount an onslaught on caste. We must begin to realise and recognise that all Indians suffer from caste; and the conscientisation to fight and annihilate caste must be the onus of all castes. Ambedkar’s impassioned tract of 1936, Annihilation of Caste, it must be recalled, was an address to caste Hindus and not Dalits. Ambedkar believed the destruction of caste demanded the destruction of Hindu religion that sanctioned caste. Yet today, few non-Dalits in India engage with his ideas. In other words, it is not enough for Dalits to be anticaste; though it is Dalits who are subjected to physical violence and degradation. Unless the brahmins down to shudras recognise that clinging to caste negates the human spirit and humanity, the fight against caste shall be as incomplete as it would be impossible. This, however, does not seem plausible since the privileged castes have a lot to lose, in terms of material security and comforts, if they question caste. As long as we believe it is only Dalits who need to lobby with the UN or fight caste at the village ghat, India shall remain entrapped in caste.[/tscii:f70e08b8c6]

Teenage pregnancies with legal sanction of marriage are not unheard of or unhealthy in our history. My aunts bore children at 11 or 12. My older cousins got married at 16 and had a baby in their hands on the 10th month after marriage. They were physically healthy and strong; they had a supportive family system. They had maturity and a sense of responsibility.
But with our growing health awareness and decreasing physical stamina the government’s marriage laws fixing a particular age for boys and girls has been found quite welcome.
What is shocking and saddening in the news is with our notorious propensity for aping and increasing clamour for FREEDOM inside the campus of educational institutions, the stiff resistance shown by students to all sensible disciplinary codes will it be long before we see such degeneration in our own country’s institutions? Karunanidhi’s real motives exposed

(November 01, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The 86-year-old cunning, southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu politician, Muthuvel Karunanidhi, popularly known as Kalaigner, entered politics at the age of 14. He was inspired by Alagiriswamy of the Justice Party’s speech, and has done nothing for the Tamil society for their empowerment, although he claims he is working hard for the Tamils’ empowerment and to establish their rights. His real motives have been exposed through many events, but the latest one is through the drama that he was the saviour of Sri Lankan Tamils when they were facing genocidal war instigated by the Sri Lankan State, which ended grief stricken in May this year, with the loss of nearly 30,000 civilians, while incarcerating another 300,000 civilians in the barbed-wires camps where the Sri Lankan State prohibits visitors, including the UN agencies, with the exception to the ten-member Indian parliamentary delegation, who had the first opportunity to pay visit to the camps.

After the Indian MPs delegation returned to India, they submitted the reports to Karunanidhi, and later on, to Indian Prime Minister and Indian Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi. The latter two people who are, in reality, taking revenge on the LTTE for the murder of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Indian Prime Minister and husband of Italian-born incumbent Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi.

Karunanidhi’s DMK is an ally of the ruling Indian central government, led by Manmohan Singh. When the Tamils were dying, India allegedly provided weapons to Sri Lanka to launch military attacks against the LTTE. When the opposing parties in Tamil Nadu exposed the real face of Karunanidhi, he and his allies issued contradictory statements. One said India did not provide weapons to Sri Lanka. Then, they acknowledged that India provided the weapons to Sri Lanka on the plea that India wanted to maintain friendship with Sri Lanka, as if India’s reluctance to provide weapons will force Sri Lanka to join hands with India’s enemies, Pakistan and China.

Also, he held several demonstrations, including fast protest, which was nothing but to ease the tension that arose due to the ongoing suffering of Tamils in Eelam, and also to counter the chain of protests conducted by the opposing parties.

The Indian delegation’s visit was nothing but a showpiece to hoodwink the international community in general, and Tamils around the world in particular, which would only serve Karunanidhi to show that he is doing everything for the welfare of the Tamils. He has the belief that the Tamils will celebrate his death when he dies in the future, as how the Tamils were celebrating the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, the late M. G. Ramachandran, who broke out from DMK, and formed ADMK, and ruled Tamil Nadu without a break for 13 years, and did not even give a chance for Karunanidhi to become Chief Minister. Ramachandran was a great patronage of Tamils, who even gave money in the early 1980s to the LTTE from his pocket and allocated funds for the LTTE from the Tamil Nadu treasury to fight against the Sri Lankan State, as it was treating the Tamils as second class citizens. And Tamils all around the world keep Ramachandran in their hearts and souls. So, Karunanidhi is trying his best to show that he, too, helps the Tamils as Ramachandran did, but no one needs to be a rocket scientist to realize the Karunanidhi’s real motives, because without a doubt, he will hoodwink the uneducated and poor Tamil Nadu people forever with his literature and dramatic talents. However, it is unlikely that he can hoodwink the Eelam and Diaspora Tamils. They will never be convinced by his speeches, arguments and actions.

Karunanidhi done enough damage to Tamil society

Karunanidhi had done enough for damaging the Tamil society, whether they live in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, South Africa, Mauritius, Singapore, or elsewhere. The Tamils living around the world are grief-sicken after they heard the story of the demise of the LTTE and especially as they feel that they will be treated as slaves because they were having the dream of achieving an independent State for Tamils so that the State will represent them whenever they face any hardships elsewhere. Their desire is for the State to really stand up to support them if they face any hardships in any other country wherever they live.

Tamils around the world no longer trust the future State of Tamil Nadu, as the politicians do not really have the hearts and minds to stand up giving voice when the Tamils anywhere face hardships, and whenever their values are at the mercy of the majority community. Tamil Nadu, as a quasi-federal State of India, has been granted much less autonomy than any other federal system of governments existing, especially in the western countries. The Tamil Nadu State has no power to stand up to save their brethrens, even when the Tamils die in the other States of India. But, the Tamil Nadu politicians did nothing to save the Tamils, even though these politicians are influential and help the government to stay in power in New Delhi.

Unfortunately, these politicians support New Delhi just for power, because these politicians demand central government to allocate ministerial posts. A classic example is that Karunanidhi’s nephew, the late Murasoli Maran, was holding a ministerial post in New Delhi for decades till his death. After his demise, Maran’s son held the senior minister’s post. Maran’s another son, Kalanidhi Maran, runs the Sun Network, India’s second largest television network. According to Forbes, Kalanidhi is among India’s richest 20 with $1.9 billion. Karunanidhi cut the relationship with Maran’s family members after three Dinkaran newspaper employees were killed by Karunanidhi’s son, Azhagiri’s supporters, for carrying out stories against Karunanidhi’s real motive to bring another son, Stalin, who is now the deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu, as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The Dinakaran paper is also owned by Maran’s family.

The Karunanidhi and Maran families gave money to the murdered members of the Dinakaran employees, but the accused Azhagiri, the prime who were also accused in the murder case of the former DMK Minister Kiruttinan, won the elections held recently and he is now a minister in Indian central government. It is no secret that Azhagiri functions as an extra constitutional authority in Madurai, though he has never held a party post, and is a liability to the party and is not yet expelled. Further, Karunanidhi’s daughter, Kanimozhi, has been nominated for a Rajya Sabha post, even though she has done very little for the party, as pointed out by critics and many of his party members.

Karunanidhi has married three times. His wives are Mrs. Padmavathy, Mrs. Dayalu Ammal, and Mrs. Rajathiammal. His sons are M.K Muthu, who was born to Padmavathy and passed away. M.K. Azhagiri, M.K. Stalin, M.K Tamilarasu, and his daughters are Selvi and Kanimozhi, who were born to Dayalu Ammal. Kanimozhi is the only daughter from his third wife, Rajathiammal. Karunanidhi is fostering his children slowly in politics, and they secure high profile posts immediately after they are introduced into politics, because Karunanidhi is giving prominence to his children rather than working for the betterment of the Tamil society. Karunanidhi, during most of his political career, at the expense of the ignorance and poverty of the Tamil Nadu people, and through corruption, built up his own empire of a near-dynasty of enormous wealth and nepotism.

One of the 10-member MPs who visited the camps in Vanni in the second week of October, this year, is the leader of the Dalit Panthers of India, Thirumavalavan who, while speaking to the Tamilnet newswire on October 23 said, “There was a total violation of human rights in the Sri Lankan government’s camps for Internally Displaced Persons.”

He further said: “The people are stashed away like cows and dogs and pigs in barbed wire camps. There are about 45,000 to 55,000 people in the six main camps. In some cases, where the overcrowding is simply unbearable, they have created additional camps for about 5,000 to 15,000 people...One of the major problems that people face is to get water for drinking and bathing purposes. The water supply is extremely irregular and insufficient. I heard the people tell me that they had to keep awake for a whole week in order to get five liters of water, which is supposedly their daily ration... I also observed that people were not allowed to move from one concentration camp to another. Every camp was within a barbed wire. People were not able to meet their relatives in another camp”

He said: “People are also afraid of speaking freely since they were being photographed. The fear of monitoring has certainly silenced them...Overall, I feel that the Government of Sri Lanka will not follow the six-month deadline which it assured to New Delhi for letting these people return. I feel that even ten percent of the people are yet to be sent back, and no effort seems to have been taken in that direction...In my opinion, Tamil Eelam is the only solution. Thousands of civilians and more than thirty thousand fighters is the price we have paid so far in this struggle. The Tamil people cannot live as second class citizens in Sri Lanka. Hence, Tamil Eelam is the only solution.”

But, the other nine MPs, comprising the DMK and the Congress Party, maintain silence about the plights of Eelam Tamils. Karunanidhi comes out strongly to say that the Sri Lankan President is doing everything possible to release the Tamils from the camps and he trusts the President. Karunanidhi said in the Tamil Nadu assembly in July, this year, that achieving ‘Tamil Eelam’ was no more a realistic possibility. He said Tamils should henceforth work for their livelihood rights in the island nation and struggle for equal rights, equal status for the language, and devolution of powers at the regional level. “Only this is possible, not Tamil Eelam,” he said, responding to views of members from various parties on a special mention on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue. He asked the parties not to make provocative remarks against the Sinhalese as that could further affect Tamils in the island nation. Hence, Karunanidhi has done enough damage to Tamil society, and Tamils should be aware that they should not trust Karunanidhi anymore for obtaining their rights.

Karunanidhi: A hero of corruptions

The Tamil Nadu population are still living in poverty, mostly while Tamil Nadu becomes the State of opportunists who hail from other parts of India and are taking control of the major leading industries, most commonly the pawn brokers who are non-inhabitants of Tamil Nadu and own and operate the pawn brokerage stores, which are a leading money making industry. And hundreds of thousands of Tamil Nadu inhabitants work in the industries owned by people who come to Tamil Nadu in search of greener pasture. But, these poor employees make less than a dollar per day, the minimal living expense of a large family. Many other economic and political oppressions are taking place in Tamil Nadu, but the people who hailed from other States in India have entered Tamil Nadu and dominated the economic and political powerhouses, taking few actions to empower the locals of Tamil Nadu, enabling legislations for the betterment of outsiders while almost nothing is done to the locals. This oppression of locals negates any progress for Tamils since British rule. Karunanidhi, too, is from such a clan, and he does not take actions for the welfare of locals who made him a greater political and economic successor. And in return, he is contributing enormously to the destruction of the Tamil society for which he remains thankful, but in reality, does not observe.

Karunanidhi did not rise to this merit through economics and politics, but rather through his corruption and other forms of malpractices. He was indicted by the Sarkaria commission for corruption in allotting tenders for the Veeranam project. Former Indian Prime Minister, the late Indira Gandhi, dismissed the Karunanidhi government, based on charges of possible secession and corruption. Earlier, Karunanidhi, the former chief secretary, K.A. Nambiar, and a host of others, were arrested in the wee hours on charges of corruption in the construction of flyovers in Chennai. He and his party members where charged under Sections 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 167 (public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury), 420 (cheating), and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 13 (2), 13 (1) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. But, he is a cunning politician who comes out clean after proving that he is innocent. It is no doubt that he is a great administrator and he is one of the living political legendaries. He is a highly respected man in India. But, his words and actions have double meaning. In reality, he and his supporters claim that Karunanidhi is a leader of world Tamils. But their such claims have no ground because he is actually the primary cause for the deaths of nearly 30,000 Tamils in Eelam, and to the destiny of nearly 300,000 Tamils, in the barbed-wire camps, in Vavuniya.

Karunanidhi’s real motives have been exposed, but it is unlikely that the poor peasants in Tamil Nadu will realize this soon. And definitely, he will be kept to the heir as the leader, even after he is dead, in Tamil Nadu, because he is leaving behind his family members to remain in power, and they will keep the pride of Karunanidhi. But in reality, since he came to politics at 14 years of age, he did everything to secure the DMK leadership from ways of manipulating others, and he got the good certificate from founder and leader of the DMK, Annadurai, who, rather than brining his family members to politics, passed the party into the hands of Karunanidhi, with the belief that Karunanidhi would work hard to the empowerment of the Tamil Nadu people. But Karunanidhi, after capturing the DMK, did nothing to the empowerment other than empowering himself, his children, and relatives into politics, and made a fortune in entrepreneurships, which could never come to an end for at least the next century. What is pathetic is that Tamils cannot come out of this powerful established network, a network of nepotism, that will always join hands with the powerful elites, just for the sake of their own fortunes, uncaring and unmindful of the people they lead. Hence, Indian Tamils, Eelam Tamils, and the millions of Tamils who live across the world, should realize the real motives of Karunanidhi and his associates.

it is a real shame that these things are happening here. giving sedatives and renting out the child to some beggar and then just think what would have happened to the health of the baby.

I can "understand" (not as in 'condone') man killing in an emotion of rage/revenge for a perceived wrong (land/property feud, goshti thagaraaru in politics/film actor fans, brainwashed/aggrieved terrorists and naxalites) but i can never understand things like these. What did they do to the perpetrators? Where is the rage coming from? Yes, caste based hatred is there but it is not like there was a riot and these people were reacting. Caste has obviously taught people to hate and look down upon "inferior" beings from "lower" castes but to this point? This is just butchering defenseless victims in *cold blood*(?). Nauseating

The picture starts with some youths lying down on the Road across... unconscious... since perhaps already beaten severely by the Police or somebody else.!

And... some well-dressed men... clementlessly beat and kick the already UNCONSCIOUS youths...

..as well as unrobe a few young ladies... spurred by uncontrollable anger.!

May be the Blow-receivers were the INITIATOR OFFENDERS / Root- Defaulters...who created the Problem for themselves and others.

Prior to this Video picturisation...they might have attacked some innocent passers-by or the Public... by throwing stones... causing damages to their Vehicles and Houses, Properties and the like...

...on the UNCONCERNED Commonfolks.... just as a matter of agitation... to draw the attention of the Police and the Public...

...and thus make a News and Cheap Publicity.!

We do not know .. but only are lead to wildly guess... based on past instances. !

One case... I can quote.

About six years back in UP.... two Community groups of Residents of a village came to blows on a trivial issue of dispute.

They were quarrelling severely... blocking the main road for hours.

The Neutral group of people... were silently watching... not knowing what to do.

Then one popular Gentleman of Social outlook in the region... reached there by his Car and tried to pass by this Road... patiently waited for a long-time.

At the verge of tolerance.. he came out and called for both the Group-heads and tried to pacify them towards friendly mutual understanding and amicable solution.

When the Warring groups were about to calm down... and agree to disperse...

..one Political leader standing behind... shouted...

"Don't yield to this Rich Bandicoot... Hit at him and his car.

Immediately one faction started attacking that innocent HUMANITAREAN Gentleman, who volunteered to help.

And that Political leader whispered some words at the ears of a young tribal woman.

She rushed to the car... and by standing in front... URINATED on it...

...openly laughing at the owner Gentleman and the Crowd...SHAMELESSLY.!

Such a grave INSULT... provoked the whole crowd of Neutrals... who surrounded her immediately and MADE HER NAKED... by unrobing her saree...

..IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CROWD.!... keeping mum.!

The matter came up in the Court.

The Woman could not escape.. but to confess that she had PISSED at the car openly laughing at the Crowd too... as a challenge.!

She was punished...

...while the Political Leader who instigated that poor Tribal woman... was left FREE... UNAFFECTED.!

Similarly in this case...

....What ENRAGED ..the Brutal attackers.?... Seems they are the EDUCATED YOUTHS.!

Perhaps their Vehicles were damaged and they were ANGERED or insulted in some ways.!

We cannot believe any Bystander or Wayside Street-walkers will get so much ENRAGED ... to behave like Beasts.!... unduly without any Offense.

There must be some cause for it...some sort of PROVOCATION.!

We may recall the similar case of agitation by one new segment of Scheduled Castes... in Rajasthan... a few years back.

The Rajasthan Police was just the SILENT SPECTATORS... there too.!

When one NEW segment of Scheduled Castes made a similar demonstration for RECOGNISING THEM... as the SCHEDULED TRIBES... shifting from the current list of SC...

...Other segments of the existing Scheduled-tribe communities... brutally attacked the claimants similarly...

...on the grounds that if anymore communities are added to the list of Scheduled Tribes...

..then the present communities under ST will lose their extent of existing priveleges.

Burning Cars And Stupid People

My name is Kalpana. A weird incident happened earlier this week as i was going home after getting my hair done. I saw a car burning on the road, and i think there was someone inside.

I have seen a lot in my years on Delhi roads, but nothing comes close to this one. Not even the time when i saw four masked men forcibly push a young girl into their Honda Civic (nice car, but i wouldn’t be caught dead in one. Everybody seems to own one these days), but didn’t raise an alarm since i had to leave for the States that night, and didn’t want any complications.

It had been a long week. The husband had been making preparations for an upcoming business trip. I had been busy with the kids, the social circuit, and all the shaadis. Damn November. I attended 5 weddings Monday night and still ended up missing a couple.

Anyways…yesterday the hubby had to go to get his UK visa stamped, and picked me up on the way back. As we were traveling on this busy South Delhi road, i noticed this car that had seemed to erupt in flames all of a sudden. I think there was a couple inside the car, and could see them struggling to get out of the car.

I saw the car behind them stop, and the man inside rushed to their rescue. He tried opening the door of the still burning car with little success. Then he started waving others to stop. Why, i wanted to ask him? You don’t care for your life, and want others too to get their hands burnt (awesome pun..eh? I am convent educated, you know) trying to save a stranger.

Besides, no good ever comes out of being a good Samaritan in these modern times. The police will harass you. You will have to make a million court visits. Anyway, nothing can change fate. If they were destined to be saved then they would have been saved. Why should i waste half an hour of my life over a meaningless cause?

Thankfully this car was in the left lane, or traffic would have gotten totally messed up. You know how Delhi traffic is….one car breaks down and the domino effect ripples down to all surrounding areas resulting in long jams. The honking. The cursing. The cutting in and out of traffic. I take utmost care to be a responsible car owner – my driver has strict instructions not to use the horn more than fifty times in an hour.

Back to the burning car. As we were passing the car, i noticed Mr Braveheart managed to pull the husband out of the car and was trying to help the woman. He didn’t seem to be getting anywhere, but only getting severely burnt himself. Meanwhile nobody else bothered to stop, though traffic had considerably slowed down. Who said Delhi doesn’t care? Everybody’s eyes were focused only on that single car. What’s so bad if people were sensible enough not to endanger their own lives and add to the already existing problems.

I am famous in the circuit as being a strong willed, brave soul. The husband though, is a weakling. He actually considered stopping and helping, but i told the driver not to even think about it. Emotions! Another word for dumbness, i tell you.

Later on they said in news reports that the man got saved but the woman died. Apparently the fire was so intense that her burnt body melted into the car seat. Horrifying!

Now they say that Delhi didn’t care to help. Why should Delhi care? There are so many people in the city. If Delhi started stopping for every minor incident, then nothing will ever get done.

People come and People go. Who the hell cares!
