‘Searching for Saraswati’

By Shubhodeep Pal - The Hindu, July 7, 2018

"There can perhaps be no better (or more ironical) testimony to this age of unreason than the [Indian] government-sanctioned search for a mythical river named after the Hindu goddess of knowledge. 'Searching for Saraswati' [an Op-Docs documentary film commissioned by The New York Times] releases this week."

"In 2014, the Prime Minister claimed that Hindu god Ganesha had undergone plastic surgery; according to Rajnath Singh, Heisenberg’s renowned Uncertainty Principle has its provenance in the Vedas. The Saraswati project is an extension of the same propaganda disguised as historical fact."

Regaining respect: on Indian Science Congress

By R. Prasad - The Hindu, January 9, 2019

https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/regaining-respect/article25943533.ece?homepage=true

"In a resolution, it [The Indian Science Congress Association] decided to obtain in advance the abstracts of the lectures of all speakers, including those speaking at the Children’s Science Congress. “We will not vet but screen the abstracts, and not allow pseudoscience to be presented. We will also have a person from the Association at every session and remove the speakers from the dais if they go beyond the purview of the submitted abstract,” said Premendu P. Mathur, General Secretary (Scientific Activities), ISCA."

"While the standard of the Congress has been in steady decline for several years, since 2015 it has seen questionable comments by speakers glorifying India’s ancient scientific achievements. The stage was set in October 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he cited the examples of Karna and Ganesha to wrongly claim that reproductive genetics and cosmetic surgery existed in India thousands of years ago. At the 2018 Science Congress, Union Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan claimed that Stephen Hawking once said the Vedas had a theory superior to Albert Einstein’s e=mc2. The credibility of science was also eroded when Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Satyapal Singh claimed last year at an event that Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution of man was “scientifically wrong”. It might be more than coincidence that Professor Rao felt emboldened to claim that the Kauravas were test tube babies and that India possessed knowledge about guided missiles centuries ago. On his part, Dr. Krishnan rejected Einstein’s theory of relativity, Newton’s theory of gravity as well as Hawking’s theories on black holes."

Raagadevan, thanks for your posts! I especially liked the article "Are we undermining our scientific temper?" - interesting article, thanks very much! Please continue with your input!! And if you can, invite others also!!

I have to admit, I don't have any personal knowledge or experience of Sci/Tech research, whether in India or anywhere else. But I'd like to learn!!

Thank you WriterV! I too do not have any direct involvement in scientific research but always had a fascination for various branches of science. When I come across news items (like the one I am posting below) where ignorant folks make pseudoscientific claims about everything under (and around!) the sun, I try to post them here. We need some comic relief in life once in a while! :)

Speaking Sanskrit keeps diabetes, cholesterol at bay, claims BJP MP Ganesh Singh, quoting U.S.-based academic institution

PTI/The Hindu - December 13, 2019

BJP MP Ganesh Singh on Thursday claimed that as per a research done by a U.S.-based academic institution, speaking Sanskrit language on a daily basis boosts the nervous system and keeps diabetes and cholesterol at bay... Participating in a debate on the Sanskrit universities bill, he also claimed that according to a research by U.S. space research organisation NASA, if computer programming is done in Sanskrit, it will be flawless... More than 97% of the languages in the world, including few Islamic languages, are based on Sanskrit, Mr. Singh said.

Indian cows’ milk is rich in gold, claims Modi ally

The Times, UK:

Cow’s milk may be falling out of fashion in the West but India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party can’t get enough of it. Dilip Ghosh, the BJP president in West Bengal, told a rally this week: “Desi cows have a hump on their back. When sunlight falls on the hump it produces gold. That is why the milk of desi cow is yellowish, lightly golden. It contains gold.”
