View Full Version : Working Hours - overtime or pressure time?

Talking about male-dominated offices, I have one experience to share.
I happened to work with one so-called strict boss who regarded himself to be a task-master. Though the official timings were 9.30 to 6, he laid an unwritten rule that no staff would leave the office before 7.30 pm. Life was like hell those days coz I have to travel for 1 hour to reach my home. Unable to balance work and home, during those 3 years of his reign, not a single female in the office got married nor dared to move in the family way. He measured efficiency by the number of hours you spend at the office :? . It was easy for male colleagues to laze around in the office till 9 pm, eat snacks (sponsored by the company, of course) and then go home just to sleep and ensure being in the good books of the boss. But, the females who had work waiting once they reach home ??
To top all irony, my dear male colleagues would call their wives at around 6-ish to inquire if they have left their office, reached home safe, finished preparing dinner, have children done their homework etc etc  . Sadly, their eyes were too clouded to consider the plight of females working with them.
Not sure, if this can be called as 'violence' , but this is an example of chauvinism. Any thoughts?

Scorpio,
My experience was a total opposite..
My immediate boss, a male, always delights that he is the last one to go home ....he used to say that he works hard etc and that none of us girls could do that. It happened so much so that all the ladies in my department decided to out-stay (is that correct word?) him.. So, we will all purposely go for a drink at the cafe after 5pm (end of working hours), come back to the office and start "working" ie, mainly finishing up some reports, or go for a line- tour (shopfloor) and check that everything was running normal, and sometimes, chat with with the production staff who're on shift etc.. ... these activities used to drag for abt 2 -3 hours .....and usually, my immediate boss would leave at about 7.30pm...
So, the moment his car leaves the compound (yes, we have spies, too! ), we will all pack our bags and leave..
Once, when he was still in the office, our big boss came and saw that we were working and then, looked hard at my immediate boss and said "you ladies should go home, in fact, there's no use working till this hour, it doesn't mean anything, the only thing it means is that you are not capable of completing your tasks on time!!!!)"... Wow!! although we felt bad about it, at heart, we were all beaming with joy at words, my boss must have felt like he's been given a tight slap on his face!! So, I had both a good male boss and the direct opposite!

True NM,
Bosses are sooooooooooo unpredictable!!
I always find it very tough with the 'burning the midnight oil' stigma in private sector. I too had another boss who regarded late-sitting as a definite sign of inefficiency. Sadly, this category has fewer people than the first one :(

Why should Women employees be given special preference in office. After all they are paid the same. Same kind of discrimination is done between married men and bachelors.
If you are woman you are the first to go home, second married men and last bachelors 'who are they going home to'. Non of your business sir/madam. A bachelor is paid the same salary as a woman or married man, how the hell can you then discriminate.

Late nights may be because of inefficiency or because of overload. Mostly it is because of overload.

Sandeep..guess you have misinterpreted....or maybe, I should've finished the story...actually my big boss also repriminded my boss and told him HE (my boss) should set the example by going home on time!! So, whether you're a guy or gal, the moral of the story is "don't stay late"! :D :D

There was even an article in 'Deccan Chronicle' (hyd. newspaper) last Dec. abt the increasing harassment of junior women IAS by senior male ones in Guwahati (Assam).....said tat sum of the women r forced to take transfer to other places while sum others r even forced to submit themselves to this treatment! Gawd! Tat is so pathetic! :x
Long ago i too read in news paper that in Punjab one women IPS officer was harassed by her senior.

Another moral is 'Stay late only if u have work'. Late-sitting should be only if necessitated by work load and not as a practice just because it is costly to sit and enjoy in Air-conditioned comfort at home !!

It is indeed a kind of violance! I too have had one experience with a late working boss (but i left that place within 5 months :D ). As you say the male collegues would laze around till 9.00 or even later than that, but we the women have to suffer. Staying late due to overload or to meet a strict deadline is not an issue at all but it really irritates you when the bosses ask the staff to stay late just because they and the other male staff do. So foolish these bosses are to measure ones commitment and performance based on the number of hours spent in office.

Another thing that irritates me is working on Saturdays. Here the private sector has an unwritten rule of working half days on Saturdays. Though they say it's a half day they make you stay atleast till 4.00 pm (it's basically a full day). All my previous working places had this 'Half Day' business and I had never gone to work with a proper mood on Saturdays. The thought itself makes me mad :x I'm so happy that my present company does not work on Satudays :D

Sandeep,
What's the doubt about this? I have seen so many of them in my career, when I used to work in a so-called new generation private sector bank. What used to start as an occasional one, becomes routine in no time. What more, if you idle yr time late in the office, it becomes a royal excuse to come late in the mornings too. Not only males, one female friend of mine usually used to leave office by 9.30 pm to escape from her taunting MIL.
Roshan,
As far as measuring performance based on yr late-sitting capabilities, I agree with you fully.

Yes..to continue where I left off...
That boss of mine commented on my "dedication to work" one year later, when I started going back early, even though I submitted everything on time! he never learnt! Fortunately I left that place soon after!
But, guess it happens everywhere, cos' when I joined a new firm, the boss, was also always happy to see my e-mails when it shows time sent after 7pm!! She'll even ask "Oh! you're working late, too? " and my dedication to work was once again HIGH due to this!! Fortunately for me, this boss left and my new boss now doesn't mind whether we came in late or early, and went back early or late, as long as he gets whatever he asks for!

This is the Problem with BOSS, all the time.... they have this attitude with them, "If we work after office hours, No matter if we finish the work.. Its as if We put Effort at least, If we don't work late hours and if we face the same trouble, its as if we have'nt put effort".
With my personal experience, if we go to office thinking of working later hours, our work on office time will be very less, as we know we GOT long day, any way.

I certainly can understand how happy and relieved you are coz, at present I too have got bosses of that kind. They are not at all bothered at what time you come or go as long as the work is done on time. In any day - if there's anything urgent I would willingly stay late and finish it. That definitely gives some sort of flexibility when it comes to reporting late , leaving early and taking some days off when it's necessary.

NM,
That should be sickening!
Sandeep,
There is no truth in yr statement that women just want to go home. I can understand you are not married right now. Consider, if you get married and go home late in night ,say, after 10 pm, only to find your wife has not gotten back and the house is in a mess and to top it all, you have to make dinner!! The problem gets compounded if you need to manage kids too.
We are not against staying late in case we have deliverables, just sitting, idling is what that bothers us. True, all employees are paid the same way, there is no discrimination but we are paid for our deliverables and not for the extra hours we laze around!

That was the last time we stayed overnight, not cos' of the scary part, but cos' we found out what our boss was doing (the one I mentioned above about peeking and firing!!!   ).....he doesn't deserve it!!

hi all,
people who all want to sit at office after 5pm should be driven to work in BPO's and call centers where they work only night shifts....
hey, i know an automotive products manufacturing company in coimbatore, where you have to fill up a permission slip to work after office hours, which would be scrutinised by your immeidate boss and only after found that was geniune you would be allowed to work. howzat.....!!!!!

What about non BPO and non call center jobs where in you work in tandem with your US counterparts or where in you have to contact the client or on-site representatives.
What about people who dont want to sleep on a problem and rather love to solve it and then have a relaxed sleep.

What is this thread... Boss Bashing?!!
The silhouette of working overtime depends on where you are working.
If you are working in corporate sector with MNCs, your boss wouldn't like you to do overtime, because you will have to be paid 4 to 7 times your pay for every hour.
If you are working for the Government sector.. normally it is the officers who work over time when you have to meet some deadline and may ask the subordinates to work. But invariably the staff come and ask for compensatory off which the officer cannot refuse.
If you are working in an organisation where the duty hours are not defined, then the eccentricities of the bosses may play a role, as you all have been describing. But they are not generalities.
But my experience is that, it is always the sincere and efficient who get to work after hours simply because they have more work to do. It is the casual type who hardly out put anything of significance who will be watching the clock at the closure hours. It is unfair but true.

hi sandeep,
i joined my first job on the 3rd day after the completion of my graduation. (lucky yeah ...?? ) i was assigned to assist in export documentation.
i should confide that i was still a college student mentally, but i was full of enthu on completing the given work.
i was preparing nearly 10 to 15 export documents starting after 5pm ( since we would get the material details packed only at 5pm from our fac ) and completes around 8.30 to 9pm, which was considered to be a record in that company during those period. :)
u know, once, one of my senior person, made me to wait till 1am, just to type one GR1 form. if u didnt know what GR1 form is, it is a pre printed form that is to be attached in the document bunch. all we have to do is, just to type our bankers name on the reverse of the form. i didnt want to explain further, since i get wild even now, on getting reminded of that IDIOT....
a geniune late stay can never be questioned. but unwanted stay irritates. even today i walk out of office only after 10.30pm daily, but that is DUE TO MY NATURE OF JOB.

But after sometime you start feeling responcible for the happenings in your place. Thats when you actually mature as an employee and that is where you sit on your own till 1am to take a 'print out'.

We were just lamenting about how late-sitting puts passive pressure on our lives without any physical or verbal violence.
Actually, we were discussing this in 'violence against women' thread when our dear mod thought it more appropriate to branch it into a separate thread for focussed exchanges.
It is not boss-bashing, but to bash our peers too who try to show off as 'critically important' persons by heating up their chairs till late night  and unnecessarily comment on those who stick to timings.

I too had a boss who simply enjoyed keeping people late with sadistic pleasure, while there can be no productivity.I spent all my time walking up and down the stairs or staring into the sky from the balcony.
My colleague who had a family at that time, was really annoyed, but couldn't do anything about it. :x
I have willingly worked till 1 o'clock in the morning, when it was really needed, but this is extreme.

Sad to see women hating workaholism as much as alchoholism.
Just because your peer is sitting late you dont have to if you are finishing your job. Now if you are able to go home early by avoiding responcibily then THAT IS BAD.
In my career I have seen only one lady who actually belongs to the first category while all the others belonged to the second.

Wrong Akash I dont sit late at office as I have virtual office at home. But my team has to sit late because they work in tandem with their US counterparts and dont have virtual office approved for them. I know their plight because I reached here by burning a lot of midnight oil.
Scorpio, Roshan and others,
Then why I am so unhappy at the female employees is because in order to bring down the continues late nights for a selected few in my team I suggested that 3 members only should stay back on a rotation basis. Thus the burden of late siting will be shared.
But female employees didnt cooperate. First their problem was transportation. I provided them company taxi on late night and made sure that two women leave together and also made sure a male employee accompanies them. Then came family problems which is something I cannot help. So women where removed from the responcibility sharing. Next came the married men and the same story.
Result it is the same 3 poor bachelors who have to stay late everyday.
Now I am trying with my bose to get at least one more virtual office approved for team so that one of the three can go home in rotation basis.

Different styles of late staying:
1. To fix urgent stuff, dead line is approaching:
leads to error prone work, lesser quality and eventually morphs into coming in the weekend and finally the employees either jump to a diff. company or the company willfully fires them as they have overbilled for the work.
2. Meeting requirements of a 24/7 office and globally dispersed team.
Shrewd people make it happen once or twice a week to corrdinate activities between offshore and onsite teams, mostly top management people stay back.
3. 'Net less'(@ home) people hunt for other jobs and chat with their US and UK friends by staying late. This is usually shortlived as Top management notices this and asks the support staff to turn AC's off (to save power  ) and it is good enuf to drive those staying back rush home.
4. Nerds and geeks engrossed in work and forget that they are actually staying late till they get a call from home! :D There are genuine moments of calmness once the office has been drained of all noise (read females and bosses), in which the ultimate solution to a research issue emerges !!!

Now I know why divorces are increasing.
Being serious, if that blessing comes true I dont think the marraige would hold long and the future of the triplets will be very sad.

So Sandeep dear, now you know what life is. Happy married life is always give and take. Late sitting does poses probs for not only women, but, men too.
Even though JG will defend you saying I'm analysing, dissecting etc etc as Tamilnadu polees, this is what u wrote yesterday-
"Come on. Women just want to go home. So they hate people (read men) sitting late. They find all kind of accusitions and escuses."
The truth is married men just want their women to go home but not their female colleagues
As far as taking back the blessing, hmm, I dont see any supporters and really, really, sorry about that

The attitude of women towards work is different from that of men all over the world, because women are new to work. They have been 'working women' from only may not even two hundred years, where as men are working outside since the hunting times.
For men, (I speak of majority of men.. there are always exceptions), work is their basic life, and the sense is impregnated in their psyche. They are at home with work, (and may not be at home in their home ) But for women 'working' is a novelty. It is only a means for earning money and nothing beyond. And they are not psychologically at home working outside. What I am stating is nothing derogatory about women, only history.
For me office hours are just referential, doesn't mean much. I enjoy working, and I enjoy working late! I don't have a boss to monitor my working hours, it is just my output that counts.
I am yet to see a woman, who enjoys work in the office like her life exists there. They are extremely sincere, very efficient. They work late hours when they have to without cribbing. But they don't enjoy it like I and many men do. And I am yet to see a woman who works afterhours when she doesn't need to..(unless she has to wait for her boy friend!  )
That is why it is women who crib a lot about working late, irrespective of their family problems and responsibilities (I know you girls are going to bring that up!)
It is not about their commitment to work, or efficiency. It is just that office for them is an office, for most men it is another home.

Give and take should be between husband and wife. There is no reason why any individual must suffer for somebody else to have a happy married life.
Now lets see where the problem comes. Every quater I will give appriasal on the team. Naturally the 3 bachelors are going to score more than all others (men as well as women). At that time these guys and gals start with the accusision that we finish all the work like them but just because they stayed back they got better appraisal.
The truth is married men just want their women to go home but not their female colleagues
Let female colleagues go home but dont whine when the boys are awarded for thier hardwork

Yes true!! For a woman office is office and home is home, coz, she has her duties at both places  Unlike men, women are capable of striking a balance between home and office. Men can never strike a balance and in case they try I'm sure they'd end up screwing both

Roshan, we are not from other galaxy,ok!! we r seeing how gals balance both the works in day to day life na.... All the Management complains that gals always have their own deadlines, and in-laws complaining... "My Son gets his food from Fridge, not from Kitchen" nnu... kids saying "My mom, wishes if the serial turns THAT WAY, not bothered y i am THIS WAY" :P

As far as Shekhar's post goes, I partially agree. I have seen working women in Bangalore who are equally devoted to work. I was blessed to have a great manager who happened to be a female. She was a warm and friendly person who was a tough task master at the same time. When the entire office would be burning midnight's oil and pushing for the build, our team always left by max 8 PM . It was because of the way she used to escalate issues, predicting whats going to come up next month and as aresult we were always ahead of our work!! Managers of other team always feared her because she was so well organised. Her sense of 'escalation ' was so ingrained into her psyche that she would arrange for calls with the client onsite and always cleared the coast ahead of the storm. When a stupid initiative by top management, which was 'everybody stayed late for the smoke test' was put in place, our team was mostly enjoying hot pizzaz and hot dosas in ITPL! Eventually all of us got used to this process of escalation that it later helped all our team members (including yours truly) wherever we went later on. Of course the rest of the team led by other managers fared so badly that the project was eventually hijacked by other consultant companies. So th emoral of the story is , a shrewd manager can impart better sense of work and time in employees. Contradictory to shekhar's post, ladies these days have adapted themselves remarkably well to the evolving workplace. If being foresighted and a little paranoid about future work can make you reach home earlier and spend quality time with your family, then all the macho stuff of staying late can go to satan's own land IMHO. :)

ok i advocate for Sandeep's release from this blessing...this is not in pity but in the meaning of blessing/curse they are just like promises i feel they either should be done with serious intent or left alone....problem is i'm sitting on the fence of this one...i agree all of the guys/gals situations can/have/will occur...because after all you are not working for/with each other...are y'all?
Shekhar concerning you post and correct labelling of this topic...spoken like a true boss! :P

Hmm, JG, the correct spell is 'Finite Incantatem'. This spell is used to stop all currently operating spell effects ( as per Harry Potter novels).

Simple, its the 'Shield charm'. The spell is 'Protego'. This spell creates a magical barrier that will deflect the hexes thrown at the caster!
