For UV he used old forgotten theyyam dance,Attakalari group from banaglore and the famous villu paatu expert subbu arumugam again..From 2000's he is using many people from "Koothu-P-Pattarai" like pasupathy,etc

In Vishwaroopam he used kathak dance,bought Birju Maharaj to limelight down south and he won national award as well..
For UV he used old forgotten theyyam dance,Attakalari group from banaglore and the famous villu paatu expert subbu arumugam again..From 2000's he is using many people from "Koothu-P-Pattarai" like pasupathy,etc

As he said cinema is truly a democratic art but not many taking it like that apart from few like KH..

Saw an interview of choreographer Brinda (the same Brinda who played Nagesh's daughter in 'Nammavar')…

The interviewer asked a question abt Brinda working with all the big names and when it came to Kamal, Brinda was all starry-eyed - "Kamal - every cell of his body is steeped in dance forms - so anyone has to keep in mind so many things while composing a dance for him - you have to be aware of symmetry, coordination of limbs and fluidity etc…He knows a lot about what to do with camera placement and how to get a certain desired effect without losing the aesthetics .."

It was such a ripe opportunity to pursue further with questions any kuppan suppan would have asked..

I would have asked "how does Kamal integrate his sense of aesthetics even in his body language when acting ? how have his dance skills helped him in facial expressions given that facial expressions are integral to many dance forms? how many takes does he do to get what he wants? how does he practice before a shoot?'

That interviewer asked NOTHING even remotely resembling any of this - instead her response was a tepid/timid silly 'aamaamla avaru oru dancer'.. and then jumped to some other actor/actress who cannot dance even in their dreams..

Why we don’t see you in Tamil these days?
I have been listening to quite a lot of scripts in Tamil. I was clear that I want to do something substantial and nice. I was not keen on going back to do the same routine. Meanwhile my projects in Telugu also kept me busy. So when Rajesh called me for Thoonga Vanam, I was quite excited.

How did Thoonga Vanam happen?
Rajesh spoke to me some time back with a role in Thoonga Vanam. My fear was, what I will be doing amidst actors like Kamal and Prakash Raj. But when I heard about my role, I was quite thrilled. Rajesh kept a track of my films and he said, after watching me in Aaranya Kaandam, he can’t give roles that are not substantial and impactful to me. He also said that he had no second choice for my role and wanted just me. When he mentioned this to Kamal sir, apparently, he also approved of it. I will be playing a very strong character in the film but can't reveal details of it.

How do you feel to be working with the legend?
I told Rajesh, to share screen space with the legend like Kamal, in itself is a big feat. For me it’s like going to a premier institute. I always aspired to go to an IIM but as I was not good in academics, I could not do that. But now, I would be going to a premier university of acting. There is not a single department in film making that Kamal is not aware of. I am happy and I will be joining the sets from Monday, the 8th June.

On the third day of shoot, I was shooting with a kid who didn’t get his act right. I went to sir and asked him if he would check the take and he replied, ‘It’s your job; that’s why I’m paying you.’

For Rajesh M Selva, director of superstar Kamal Haasan-starrer ‘Cheekati Rajyam’, the thought of wielding the megaphone for a project never crossed his mind. “I began my career as Kamal sir’s third assistant director for ‘Marmayogi’ in 2008.

Though the film was shelved, I continued to work with his production house as they were regularly into films irrespective of the box-office results. After a journey of eight years, he felt I am ready to direct him,” says a smiling Rajesh, who studied Visual Communication. “It is like he is sending me to the examination hall now and I have to pass the test of what I learnt from him.”

Describing the film as an action thriller peppered with romance and family drama, Rajesh, who has his roots in Nellore, says, “I can vouch that Kamal sir hasn’t done this kind of film in a long time. It’s his safest commercial bet.” Chennai-bred Rajesh is touched by the complete support and liberty that he is receiving from the versatile actor, who is also producing the film.

“He gave me the freedom to choose my team – from cameraman Sanu Varghese to acting talents like Prakash Raj, Sampath and Kishore,” he exclaims, adding, “So far, I was his assistant director meeting his demands and now I’m looking at him from a director’s point of view. When he refers to me as the director, I feel like I’m in a dream world.”

After a pause he adds, “On the third day of shoot, I was shooting with a kid who didn’t get his act right. I went to sir and asked him if he would check the take and he replied, ‘It’s your job; that’s why I’m paying you.’ What more can I ask for?”

And admittedly, Kamal is everything for him. “Whenever I was down, I used to get a call from him asking me to work for him,” he recalls with a choke in his voice. “During the first three days of ‘Cheekati Rajyam’, we were really worried and had a feeling that something was going wrong.

After the fourth day, we showed him the footage. He was happy with what he saw and said, ‘You are going in the right track, go ahead.’ It was like a big pat on our back.” The director remembers how Kamal went out of his way to do prosthetic make-up for Trisha and Prakash Raj for a portion in the film. “It was actually a slip-up on my part.

I was supposed to call the prosthetic team but I forgot. When I explained the situation to sir, he said, ‘The shoot is tomorrow, right? We’ll figure out a way.’ But to the team’s surprise, though it was his reserve day, he dropped by the location and did the make-up for Trisha and Prakash Raj.”

As the film critic Anthony Lane once observed, there’s nothing so exhausting as being goaded into a state of constant excitement. He wasn’t talking about “Sleepless Night,” but the shoe fits. Hectic and harebrained, this galloping French thriller tosses a potpourri of plot points — crooked cops, sleazy gangsters, stolen drugs and an underage hostage — into a packed-to-the-gills nightclub, and stirs. Repeatedly.

Shrugging off the need for a fully developed story, the director, Frédéric Jardin (who also contributed to the script), weaves a sticky web of special interests bound by blood and fistfights and dizzying double crosses. His spider is Vincent (Tomer Sisley), a corrupt police officer who must return the cocaine he nabbed from a vicious dealer in order to release his son from the dealer’s sweaty clutches. The exchange is complicated by a nosy Internal Affairs team, a labyrinthine location and a bleeding knife wound that thankfully proves irrelevant to Vincent’s pummeling ability.

Charging from one beating to another, wrenching diminishing returns from drunken camera angles and cat-and-mouse games, Mr. Jardin makes Vincent’s predicament as hollow as a sustained scream. As he elbows his way for the umpteenth time through a sea of gyrating bodies, he pulls the story’s moral and locational mazes into overlap, and, briefly, we see a glimmer of a more thoughtful film.

Unfortunately, Mr. Jardin fails to notice; he’s too busy mocking Pierre Cardin and lecturing the villains on free will. Be sure to exercise yours.

KH has said that his portion will be over by August end and after 3 months preparation he will be ready for this next, Amar Hain /Thalaivan Irrukinran by January 2016. No, not like that. I was hoping for a bit more mainstream mass movie with some refinements only possible by KH. So a bit disappointed that it will have raw violence like how KP did in those days. VR was different -- the first 30 minutes was different from the rest of the movie and movie as a whole had a tried to explore the terrorist psyche with sub plots and emotions and some depth.

But anyway, as you say, let's wait and see.

They will have to make some changes to suit the audience here. How interestingly they do it will determine the final outcome.

Most of the movie takes place in a few rooms in the original version. Lots of dead bodies. Tons of violence. Not sure why Trisha's character is so de-glam? If you need a mother of a 12 year old who is a single parent, it has to be Manisha. So she is back again.

But, OTOH, they are remaking this French movie in Hollywood. So people see potential apparently

The first schedule of the Kamal Haasan starrer ‘Thoongavanam’ directed by Rajesh M Selva completed in Hyderabad a few days back and the second schedule has now begun in and around VGP beach resorts. The entire schedule will be shot in the night and Kamal and Trisha are participating.

‘Thoongavanam’ is also made simultaneously in Telugu, titled ‘Cheekati Rajyam’ and stars Manisha Koirala, Madhu Shalini, Prakash Raj, Sampath, Asha Sarath, Uma Riyaz Khan and Yugi Sethu. Music is scored by Ghibran, Cinematography by Sanu Varughese, Editing by Vijay Shankar and Production by Raaj Kamal Films International.

The Ulaganayagan obviously was very impressed with her performance that he promptly signed her for his ‘Thoongavanam’. The director of the film Rajesh M Selva revealed that Asha is playing the important role of Kamal’s wife. The thirty nine year old Asha Sarath debuted as an actress only in the year 2012 and within such a short time in her career she has got the opportunity to pair up with one of India’s most celebrated actors.

Kamal Haasan’s Thoongavanam is fast progressing at ECR opposite VGP Golden beach in Chennai. Reliable sources reveal that the art direction team has erected a massive set resembling a club in the area. It is also said that without the camera and the rest of the set-up, general public is likely to mistake the set as a party place and might even go to the extent of buying entry tickets. The place is said to look that authentic and real. The pub is named as Insomnia catering to the title.

Currently the unit is shooting few important scenes along with a song sequence. Kamal, Trisha and Kishore are participating in the shoot. Kamal was seen singing along for a trippy track of Ghibran. About fifty odd junior artists were also said to be part of the shoot. Kamal was reportedly spotted in a white shirt and a dark pant with blood all over his dress. Trisha and Kishore were seen with bruises on their face looking tired and devastated.

These things suggest that the film could be high on action with a pub as its core. Stay tuned for more updates!

After a gap, you are on a signing spree, and are part of big projects. Can you tell us about it?
At this point of time in my career, I have the liberty to pick and choose films. The gap that I had in the industry was not intentional, as I just took some time to choose a few scripts carefully. And moreover, most of the directors now are coming up with heroine-oriented scripts and it is always exciting to be a part of such films. Even my role in Kamal sir's Thoongavanam is a very strong one and has scope to perform. It's completely different from my previous films.

How is it to work with Kamal Haasan again, after Manmadhan Ambu? When it comes to work, Kamal sir is just a passionate lover of cinema, who gives his life for cinema. He gets so much involved with every role in the film, and discusses it with the actors who are going to portray it onscreen. He also gets inputs from them. For me, acting in his film is like going back to school. In Thoongavanam, I will be dubbing for myself once again, as Kamal sir always insists on my doing so. The outdoor portions of the film were shot in Hyderabad and the indoor ones are being shot in Chennai.

Guess you have a different look in the film, going by the picture you had posted of Kamal Haasan doing makeup for you...
Well, I can't say much about my character in the film as of now. But yes, there is lot of prosthetic makeup involved for a particular scene, and Kamal sir has done it himself. He is knowledgeable about every department of cinema, and it's a pleasure to be on the set with him.

How was it to work with Kamal within a short time? “I thank God and Kamal sir for the wonderful opportunity. I was much excited to receive a call to do a film with Kamal sir in quick succession. I heard the script and understood about my role. To me it was like a blessing. First I played a police officer and now as Kamal’s wife. The film is a bilingual in Tamil and Telugu and my first film in Telugu”.

It is a known fact that Kamal’s ‘Uttama Villain’ was a huge failure at Box-Office. The movie released after two days and that was touted to be the main reason.


However ‘Papanasam’ changed KamalHaasan’s fortunes. But Lingusamy is still unable to recover and even his ‘Rajini Murugan’ is still searching a way for a release. Now Kamal who was earlier expected to act in a comedy movie, has backed out of the project.

Sources say, ‘ThoongaVanam’ has been handovered to Thirupathi Bros. As time never permits for Kamal Haasan even to work on a small projectand and he is keen to start his next bi-lingual project ‘Thalaivan Irukiraan’, the distribution rights to ‘ThoongaVanam’ is likely to be provided to ‘Thirupathi Bros’. ‘ThoongaVanam’ is produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and the budget is said to be 30 Crores excluding Kamal’s budget.

'Thoongaavanam' will see Kamal Haasan in a high-energy, racy, action-packed role says music director Ghibran

Music director Ghibran came into the limelight in the Tamil film industry with Vaagai Sooda Vaa and the rest as they say is history. Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan calls Ghibran brilliant while ace singer S P Balasubrahmanyam requested him to give him an opportunity to sing for him! The 35-year-old music director may just have ten Tamil film albums to his credit but four of those are Kamal Haasan films. The down-to-earth Ghibran talks to dna about his music, Kamal Haasan and his career in the Tamil film industry.

How did you develop an interest in music?
I don’t come from a music background. One day I saw Yanni’s performance on TV when I was about 7 or 8 years old and that triggered my interests in music. Then I won a singing competition in our colony in Coimbatore and started singing classes. My family went through a bad time and we shifted to Chennai after my 10th standard and I had to start working. I learnt how to play the piano and completed grade eight and post that I started composing jingles. I set up my home studio in 2000 (which apparently was the first one in Chennai) and worked full-time on this. I even bought a house with my earnings.

You then went to Singapore to study music.
Yes, I decided to go to Singapore to study music but the minimum qualification was 12th standard. So at the age of 25, I did my 12th standard exams and passed with 80 per cent! I sold my house to fund my studies. When I came back to Chennai after my course, I found that all my clients had moved on. Sarkunam and I were friends and his Kalavani had become a hit. He then roped me in for Vaagai Sooda Vaa.

You won a lot of awards for Vaagai Sooda Vaa (VSV) but you didn’t sign on any other film for a year.
I was being offered a lot of films but they were all village-based subjects like VSV. I didn’t want to get typecast because I think your strength can also become your weakness. I was waiting to do a film that would show another dimension of my music and that’s when Vathikuchi came along. It was really different from VSV. Though the movie may not have done well at the box office, the music was widely appreciated.

Did the Kuttipuli controversy put you off the Tamil film industry?
I wasn’t aware at all what the director of the film, Muthiah, had changed in terms of the music or background score. Raja sir and Rahman’s songs had been used to replace my music in several parts of the film. It was only after the film’s release I was made aware and I was really upset about the criticism I received.

Considering you aren’t from the film industry, did you understand how the film industry works after this controversy?
I still don’t know how the film industry works! (Laughs) I made a few mistakes in the selection of films early on in my career. I realised that I should work with people I am comfortable with. I selected projects by logic but they backfired. I think going by intuition works best for me and I take a call after meeting the director and listening to the story. It’s about how passionate people are. As for me otherwise, I’m not a party person or attend too many events in the film industry. I prefer going to a local tea shop and having a chai.

How did you feel when you got the first call from Kamal Haasan?
I got a call from his office when I was really feeling low. At the point, I was contemplating on what to do but quitting the film industry was not on my mind. When I got the call, I thought that maybe that was God’s way of telling me that I should continue in the Tamil film industry.

I was actually quite nervous the first time I met him. After the first few meetings, I was more comfortable and he made me feel comfortable as well. I was signed on by him for Vishwaroopam 2 and I never knew that I would be doing Uthama Villain. He told me that later.

You’ve done four films with Kamal Haasan now. What’s the equation you share with him?
In an interview of his, Kamal Haasan had stated that he liked working with me because he considers me as a learned person. I feel the same way about him. While he talks to you about music, for instance, he’ll draw inferences from Tamil literature, classical music to Broadway and more. Though I am definitely not as learned as he is, I do understand his thought process and can connect the dots. I think that’s why I share a good equation with him.

Tell us about Thoongaavanam.
The audience will see Kamal Haasan in a high-energy, racy, action-packed role in this film. There is only one song in this film and it’s sung by him with lyrics by Vairamuthu.

Are you not looking at doing mass commercial films in Tamil?
I would love to! People somehow think I’m this serious person but I’m not. I’m goofy, fun-loving and can be stupid. (Laughs) I definitely want to commercial films in Tamil. I did Run Raja Run and Jil in Telugu and they were very successful. Currently, I am working on a Vikram film and one more small film in Tamil. I am in talks for some projects in Telugu as well.

Your wife is a scientist. What feedback does she give you about your music?
The only advice she constantly gives me is to select good films. (Laughs)

Thoongavanam: It's Kamal Haasan vs Trisha in this action-thriller

Kamal Haasan, who will be next seen in Thoongavanam, has wrapped up the shooting of the action-thriller, and the film is currently in its post production. Buzz has it that the actor will be seen at loggerheads with none other than Trisha in this bilingual film. Trisha, who is playing a pivotal role in the film, will be seen taking on Kamal Haasan. The fight is choreographed in a realistic way by French stuntmen.

"This fight sequence takes place in the kitchen of a restaurant. Kamal and Trisha will be seen exchanging blows. The action has been choreographed very realistically by French stuntmen trio Gilles Conseil, Sylvain Gabet and Virgie Arnaud," a source from the film's unit told IANS.

Kamal Haasan's 'Thoongavanam' to release before Diwali?

Kamal Haasan and his team of high spirited professionals sparked a surprise by completing the shooting of ‘Thoongavanam’ in just 38 days. The post production work for the Rajesh M. Selva directed film that began earlier this month is going at a break neck speed and sources say that all the actors have completed dubbing for the film and the music director Ghibran is spending hours together on the background score.

While the earlier film was being touted as a Deepavali release, sources say that Raj Kamal Films International, the producers of the film are considering a release date ahead of the festival of lights, which is two months away from now.

Uv, thats becos I am more towards a completely fresh script like UV, VR, Dasa ect than a remake, inspite of how many mods he has done on the screenplay.. so iam more looking towards Thalaivan Irukkindraan or some other fresh script!
