Vedalam’s teaser is busy creating records and everybody is talking about the kind of film this Ajith starrer is going to be. Known for commercial potboilers, Siruthai Siva perhaps would like to be addressed as Vedalam Siva after this film’s release.

Vedalam’s final cut has almost been locked and a trustworthy source says that Ajith has started dubbing for the film at a highly guarded studio in Chennai.

With Ajith’s haunting voice-over in the teaser being talked about, the King of opening will be busy trying different tones at the studio now.

IS CURRENT AJITH KUMAR THE 90s RAJINIKANTH!!??

If you analyze the growth of two legends of Kollywood, Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth quite deeply, you will find until the end of 1980s, both Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth were almost equal box-office wise. And both had equal fan base. It was from the start of 1990s Rajinikanth capitalized his box-office hold to a next level with the back to back blockbusters like Thalapathy, Annamalai, Veera, Baadsha, Mutthu, Arunachalam and Padayappa, even though Kamal Hassan too was giving blockbusters like Devar Magan, Singara velan, Indian, Avvai Shanmugi and Thenali. The fan base of Kamal Hassan remained the same while that of Rajinikanth doubled or even tripled during the decade of 90s.

Twenty years later, in the current decade, I see a same pattern occurring again Kollywood between two huge stars, Ajith Kumar and Joseph Vijay. During the years 2001 to 2010, both the stars had great rises and great falls. It was a decade in which both succeeded and both failed equally with Vijay being a little more bankable star than Ajith. But once the current decade started, that is from 2011, things started to change. With the release of Mankatha in 2011, Ajith launched himself into a bigger league and his fan base is on the rise ever since that film’s release. That too in a really great speed similar to that of Rajini’s fan base rise in the 90s. He had used the path created by Mankatha very wisely by following it with hits in Arrambam, Veeram and Yennai Arindhaal despite a Billa 2 failure. Moreover in the form of directors Venkat Prabhu, Vishnu Vardhan and Siva, Ajith has probably found his super directors same like Rajini did in the 90s in the form of Mani Ratnam, Suresh Krishna and K.S.Ravi Kumar.

Now suddenly, the family audience are showing more interest in Ajith’s movies and more young girls are starting to like him which was a rare occurrence in the previous decade. Might be people are starting to like his honesty in his screen appearance, playing his age with a natural salt and pepper look as well as his honest personal qualities like not using his fans for his personal benefits, not encouraging any fake publicity for his films, helping others without anyone knowing, not attending any commercial functions and speaking his heart boldly. The honest and unanimous positive opinions about him coming from other celebrities and fans had made general people look at him in a positive way. It must be noted that these same good qualities of him were once responsible for giving an impression of him being rude and a head weighted person. After all the truth comes to light some day. To me, there are two important occurrences that had good effect on general people’s perception of Ajith Kumar. Firstly it was his open talk in a political function complaining about the arm twisting that was going on for making actors attend political function in front of the then chief minister and secondly the disbanding of his fan clubs which needs immense guts to do.

This rise of Ajith’s fan base is a huge phenomenon because this is happening not during the absence or in a failure phase of the other star Vijay but this is happening despite Vijay too giving some decent hits from 2011 same like Kamal Hassan was giving hits in the 1990s. All said, my theory of ‘What happened to Rajini in 1990s is currently happening to Ajith in this decade’ might go entirely wrong if the result of Vedalam goes wrong. But seeing the teasers that recently released and the low profile that the director and producer had maintained till the release of that terrifyingly awesome teaser, I am pretty confident that Team Vedalam is not an empty vessel and I am sure of a positive result for Vedalam. After all, only empty vessels make much noises stating that they did this and that in order to draw audience.

+1 . Dude I'm just tired of this sh!t hair do that he has been carrying. Mankatha was a hit, but that doesn't mean he has to carry the looks regardless of what the character requires

He could have easily done away with his looks for Veeram and it would have been perfect. But it's beyond anyone's imagination as to why he wants to carry his look (mostly salt and no pepper)

For 'Don't Mess with me', they should have used Rubba Bend from Psycho Unit or Kash & Krissy.

The guitar lead in Veera Vinayaga is awesome, the song too. But I doubt these lines - 'Esan Petra Asai Maganey' (maybe with the lines following, it points to glorify Ajith ?!?).

Ajith & a Gana looks impressively large (mentioned it during Veeram too). A full Gana featuring Ajith admist stupendous "thara & thapatta" is remarkable. 'Getha Udatha Pangu Getha Udatha', theatre yenna agapogutho !

Didn't know Ashwin is in the cast (a promising actor). Another spiritual impression from Ajith through an amazing song.

Songs of the Ajith starrer Vedalam are out and have caught on the attention of the fans. Out of the five songs, Don’t You Mess With Me, written by Madhan Karky sounds pretty interesting. The lyricist known for introducing new words in Tamil has given a mix of Tamil and English words for this number. We catch up with the techno lyricist:

“This number is an experimental one. The idea was actually Anirudh’s. He had most of the English words already. I spent time on the Tamil portions and some of the English lines in between. The song is actually a two-in-one song. The first part of it tells why the girl hates the man and her anger towards him. The second part actually happens after a couple of scenes when she falls in love with him and is impressed with his character wherein it transforms into a love portion. Usually there will be two songs in other films, but we wanted both the emotions to be in the same track and at the same time did not want it to sound scornful. It was challenging. Also, musically it is a different one for a Tamil song as that’s the treatment the team wanted.

In the second half, it begins with Tamil. She says that her definition of manhood was someone who trounces many men, but he showed that manhood can also be a tear drop at the corner of his eye for a woman. She says that amidst all the lies, he is the truth, amidst all garbage, he is the purity, amidst all the noise, he is the melody and so on. Her complete change over is represented in this song. These things happen as part of the story.

This is a totally different kind of song for me in terms of genre. It’s a kind of rock EDM style. For such a song, people would either love it completely or hate it completely”.

PRODUCER A M RATHNAM INTERVIEW

A.M.Rathnam's brand value signifies grandeur and quality entertainment. With numerous big star blockbusters to his credit, Rathnam is a highly respected name in the Indian film business. Ahead of the release of his upcoming Ajith biggie Vedalam, Kaushik catches up with the senior producer at his office in Chennai.


You have great experience in delivering festival entertainers like Arrambam and Sivakasi. How ideal is Vedalam as a Diwali entertainer?


Seeing films for Diwali has always been a part of the culture in Tamil Nadu. More than Pongal, the Diwali time film craze is prominent. Especially for big star films like Vedalam, which have a massive patronage from the youth. We expect celebration for fans in theaters and a very big opening.


The pre-release buzz for Vedalam?


Before, films used to have long runs. But nowadays, the main run is for the first 10 days or so, after which collections become negligible. Generally promotions are done to reach the film in all corners, that too now with releases happening simultaneously from A to Z. For Vedalam, media hype is high, though we haven’t done much from our side. (no trailer yet)

It will be a commercial package for Diwali that can be seen by all age groups. Ajith sir has done some hardcore action and has also danced well. Expect some good messages too.


Plans for the Telugu version Aavesham?


The Telugu version may come a week late. The work on the Tamil version was pretty neck to neck and Telugu dubbing work began late. With VV Vinayak’s Akhil and Rajshri Productions’ Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’s dubbed version arriving on 11th and 12th respectively, we will most likely come a week after the Tamil version’s release.


With Vedalam looking like a packed, well-planned affair from the outset, tell us about director Siva and his team’s efficiency



The crew worked day and night, especially Ajith sir. When I conveyed to him that we need to come out on the Diwali festival day, he took it up and worked very hard.


After 3 films in quick succession with Ajith, there must be something that really impresses you about him right? 4th outing likely?


Before Arrambam, I hadn’t worked with Ajith. I dubbed and released Kadhal Kottai in Telugu, and we had some talks to work together but they didn’t materialize. He called me for Arrambam when there was a small hiatus from my side in production, and since we all worked like family, we decided on repeat collaborations. These 3 films seem to have happened in a really quick stretch.

After Vedalam’s release, he is going for a long-pending surgery to mend the ligament tear problem in his knee, and after his rehabilitation gap, we will decide whether to collaborate for the 4th time. By God’s grace, he didn’t delay this surgery further and will go for a small procedure after Diwali. Hats off to him, he can tolerate such pain! It is difficult to even walk when such knee twists happen.

After Vedalam’s release, Ajith is going for a long-pending surgery to mend the ligament tear problem in his knee.


Over these 3 films, how did directors - Vishnuvardhan, Gautham Menon and Siva, gel with you and Ajith?


Once Ajith sir commits to a film, he will never have any problems in mingling with the directors. He will be the first to arrive on set, and will be the last to leave. He wouldn’t behave like he is a big hero and would just be like one among the unit. So, with Vishnuvardhan, Gautham and Siva, he was equally comfortable but I find that he is more intimate with Siva. Siva is a nice commercial director and extracts good performances from his actors.

With Kamal Haasan in 1995 and now with Shruti Haasan in 2015, how does the daughter take after her celebrated dad?


We have worked with so many leading heroines in our banner like Trisha, Anushka, Nayanthara, Shriya, Ileana, Tamanna, Jyothika and Bhoomika. The thing that really surprised me with Shruti was her complete commitment, co-operation and time sense. Never once did she behave like a big star’s daughter and was a complete professional. She travels a lot, and is busy with many films across the country but would always keep up to time. She is involved, well-behaved, multi-faceted, well-aware and mature beyond her years.


How are you able to sustain in the industry this long, as a leading producer?


I have been in cinema for about 44 years and about 90% of my films have been successes. Even for the remaining 10%, I knew from the beginning about their prospects and they didn’t disappoint me as such. In my experience, I would say that if we observe and learn the different aspects of a trade minutely, we can excel in any field, not just cinema. Faith and patience are musts too.


The key factors in all your productions?


Leaving aside our personal likes and tastes, we have to deliver what the audience wants and what that film and script demands. Selvaraghavan once wondered, during the time of Dhool and 7G, on how I was able to deliver both mass and class films at the same time. It is simple, the audience should like and understand the film, whichever genre and style it falls under.

How do factors like tax exemption affect producers in the current scenario? That too the recent judgment about exemption benefiting the ticket buyer?


When I was a youngster, tax exemption used to be given to special films which had must-watch themes. In that case, ticket rates were also reduced to encourage more viewers to see the film. But tax exemption only benefiting the end-consumer (through reduced rates) is a mighty surprising judgement. It should benefit the film industry chain as well.

We shot Vedalam in Kolkata, where ticket rates for the Fri - Sun weekend are 300 and through the weekdays, it is 200. Here in Tamil Nadu, only in some Chennai city multiplexes, tickets are sold at 120. In some theaters like AVM Rajeswari, tickets are still sold for 50 and 40 rupees. Cinema is a field which involves so many other arms like travel, food, raw materials etc. When there is an increase in the cost of living and in the price of tin or wood or say even salt and sugar, it directly has an impact on the cost of film production too. But, there is this continued cap on ticket rates in the state, and when the existing 120 cap is itself detrimental to producers, further reduction in ticket rates with this tax exemption judgement will impact producers even more. It just won’t work out business-wise and we can’t make films actually.

When eatables worth just about 50 rupees are sold for 200+ in multiplexes, tickets for multi crore productions are continued to be sold at meager rates of just 120. Films actually drive the sale of these eatables. Nobody goes to just eat at multiplexes right?

During Indian’s release, we applied for special permission from the collector and hiked ticket rates for the first week alone. Other films’ tickets were continued to be sold at the same rates. This also helped in controlling the black market. This makes sense for big star films. So when there is a legal increase in ticket rates approved by the government, there can be many benefits for the film industry. Transparency is possible and we can see collection details through the net sitting from our office. Such transparency can benefit the industry. All stakeholders should be united and take this issue up.

In some theaters like AVM Rajeswari, tickets are still sold for 50 and 40 rupees.


The impact of censoring in present day Tamil cinema?


My general feeling is, and this is something that I have also taken up with the censors, it is better to give commercial entertainers a ‘U’ certificate in the current scenario, with tax exemption benefits applicable only for ‘U’ rated films. As long as a commercial film doesn’t have an anti-theme and objectionable content, it can be given a ‘U’. There are practical benefits that producers would get, contrary to a U/A film which is ruled out of these tax benefits.

It is better to give commercial entertainers a ‘U’ certificate in the current scenario.


More production plans ahead? And the rumored reunion with llayathalapathy Vijay?


Before, we used to do about 6 to 7 films simultaneously, each in varying stages of production. I have plans to do more such parallel films now too, provided I like the director and his story. We have enough experience and caliber with all the big stars, across languages and we intend to do more films. We always maintain a low profile before confirming and committing projects, and our films will do the talking.


And Indian 2?


Kamal sir wanted to do Indian 2 during the time of Hey Ram itself. But we couldn’t find a proper story back then. Even recently, me and Shankar sir discussed about Indian 2. He is now doing Enthiran 2, so in future this may happen (smiles)

From Day 1, Yennai Arindhaal was hit hard by piracy, which originated in some remote theater in Kerala. People just won’t go to theaters once the pirated copy comes out. People in my own circle didn’t go to the theater once this pirated copy came out and 10s of 1000s of people saw this illegal copy.

There is no point seizing a certain number of CDs or DVDs during raids. Once even one DVD is made, it is like a cancer cell and can be replicated to 1000s of copies. Some way needs to be found to stop the piracy of films through the internet. Overnight, films get smashed due to this and I shed tears even thinking about this.

Without the cooperation of theater owners in Tamil Nadu, Kerala or Karnataka, such piracy cannot happen. Earlier, we thought that it was happening abroad, but it originates locally. The wrongdoers exploit human weakness and indulge in this, resulting in crores and crores of money loss for us. There are some usual suspects who ply this trade till date !!!

* இரண்டு கெட்டப்களில் நடித்திருக்கிறார் அஜித். படத்தின் தற்போதைய காலகட்டத்தில் 'விநாயகா' என்ற பாத்திரத்திலும், ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகளில் 'வேதாளம்' என்ற பாத்திரத்திலும் நடித்திருக்கிறார். ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் பாத்திரத்தின் பெயரைப் படத்தின் பெயராக வைக்கலாம் என்று சிவாவிடம் சிபாரிசு செய்திருக்கிறார் அஜித்.

VEDALAM SWOT ANALYSIS

Whenever we have the much-expected biggies, a SWOT analysis is in order. Let’s do a quick Strengths - Weaknesses - Opportunities - Threats check for the Thala Ajith starrer Vedalam, which releases day after tomorrow, Nov 10th.

Strengths

- When you have the Ultimate Star Thala Ajith as the face of a film, you can be assured of grand openings, massive screen counts all over, tremendous ticket pressure and organically generated hype. Vedalam has all this and more! One can see the star in two distinct looks, with the North Madras Don segment being the most anticipated one. He has danced and indulged in numerous stunts for the delight of his fans. Of course, his screen presence is bound to be mighty powerful as always, in this packaged masala flick.

- Director Siva knows his game, which is to entertain the masses with a simple story, a gripping screenplay and some positive messages. Two back to back hits, Siruthai and Veeram, and now Vedalam may be the hat-trick winner for this genial giant.

- Shruti Haasan, Lakshmi Menon, Soori, Thambi Ramaiah are all leading names in their own right and add more luster to the cast list of Vedalam.

- Producer A.M.Rathnam never spares any expense when it comes to his grand commercial films and the veteran has made sure that the film has arrived for Diwali as an ideal festival entertainer.

- Anirudh’s first turn in composing for a Thala Ajith film has resulted in two fan favorites in the form of Aaluma Doluma and Veera Vinayaga. It isn’t an outstanding effort by any means, but sort of par for the course, considering a mass commercial film such as Vedalam. With the theme not sounding great in the album, we have to see how it gels with the film and lifts the key moments.

- The best of screens both in TN and in overseas markets is undoubtedly a plus for Vedalam as it eyes a massive 6-day opening starting this Tuesday. The TN screen count is in excess of 500 and the worldwide screen count is easily northwards of 1000. Ideal platform for a vasool vettai. The festive Diwali period is also a boosting factor for the film’s box-office prospects as families generally visit theaters in large numbers, during this period.

- A trailer isn’t required as such for a big star film such as Vedalam with massive Thala-generated hype. Just the teaser and a couple of song promos are the pre-release content that we have seen, along with the stills. Vedalam’s freshness has been retained and some curiosity and suspense with respect to its content is evident. But some also feel that the lack of a trailer is a downer. The team had to keep up to its release deadline and was under much pressure to complete the film on time and hence couldn’t release a trailer.

Weaknesses

- From the looks of it, nothing different is in store - Vedalam is going to be a good old hero-driven film with numerous stunts, comedy, villainy, song-dance routines and sentiments. The recipe is very much cliched, tried and tested, and Vedalam would have to stand out in some aspect to click big time with the masses. Of late, fresher concepts are being welcomed more and audiences have been ruthlessly dismissive of big star films. Will Vedalam emerge unscathed? We will know soon.

Opportunities

- Ajith’s overseas market presence is consistently on the rise and Vedalam has the chance to better what Arrambam and Yennai Arindhaal did. With big releases in Europe, US and the traditional overseas belts such as Malaysia and Sri Lanka, expect Vedalam to make a good killing in the overseas front.

- Whenever there is a big star film, 100 crore gross talks gain prominence. Vedalam is undeniably part of this wave, and fans expect many new box-office records and benchmarks for Thala such as the Day 1 TN gross to begin with. Things have fallen in place pretty well pre-release, and if the content works, then we may just see Vedalam in the elite Tamil 100 crores worldwide gross club.

- Shruti Haasan can register her first outright solid hit in Tamil with Vedalam. Such a result may further shoot up her already promising career.

Threats

- Competition from the other Diwali release Thoongavanam obviously is a factor. Though Vedalam clearly starts as the big opening favorite with its massive screen count and main screens, if the Kamal starrer emerges as the better film, then things could change fast. Word of mouth and content are ultimately the deciding factors. Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo would also be a big competing factor against Vedalam in outer-TN markets and the overseas space.

- The TN monsoon seems to be well-placed to hit its peak during the post-Diwali time and collections of both the Diwali releases may take a hit if nature unleashes its fury.

Ajith’s 'Vedalam' releases this Tuesday. The film’s director ‘Siruthai’ Siva assures vishal menon that it going to be a ‘Thala’ Deepavali

Do you feel Ajith’s image has changed after Gautham Menon’s Yennai Arindhaal. Did you make any changes to accommodate this new image?

Not really. He has done sophisticated roles even earlier, so I didn’t have to make any changes to his character in Vedalam. I can argue that I’ve gone in the opposite direction with his character, who is a ‘thara local’. In Veeram he played a villager…but in Vedalam he belongs to North Chennai. His dialogues in that dialect are a highlight.

When you make mass entertainers with stars like Ajith, do you need to be a fan of the actor? Because the film needs to cater to his extensive fan base.

Yes it helps if you’re a fan as you have an idea of how you want to see your star appear on screen. I have become a fan of Ajith. Even if you’re not a fan, you’ll become one once you interact with him.

Personally, I was always a fan of the superstars and have grown up idolising MGR and Rajni. I love the cinema they represent.

But there’s a perception that commercial cinema is a lesser art…

I believe there are two kinds of films—films that you make for yourself and those that you make for everyone. I prefer to make the latter. I want the audience to forget their sorrows. They must leave happy and satisfied. Given a choice I will continue making commercial films all my life.

Vedhalam brings together Ajith and Anirudh. What does Anirudh bring to the table?

Anirudh is a ‘pakka thala veriyan’. Even when I was narrating the script to him, he was listening to it like a crazy fan would. He promised his best and he has delivered.

You made a move from Telugu films to Tamil despite a successful career there. What prompted the shift?

I started off as a cinematographer and then became a director in Telugu. But I feel happiest when I write dialogues in my mother tongue which is Tamil. I guess I’m basically a writer.

When you sit down to write how much do you think about reactions on social media?

See, you cannot satisfy everyone. However great your film is, there will still be a set of people who dislike it, who want to criticise it. As a director all you can do is to make it with a certain amount on conviction. It hurts less when you’re being criticised then.

Do you like your prefix Siruthai? Were you surprised when it stuck?

(Laughs) I don’t know how the name stuck but it has and I don’t want to change it now. Siruthai established me as a good commercial filmmaker and I’m proud of it.
