A brief study on the rule of Naayakkar kings in parts of Tamil Nadu
The Kannada - Vijayanagara emperor the Acchuthadevaraya appointed Visvanatha Nayaka as his "viceroy" at Mathurai with distributed powers to him to directly control the affairs of the Paandiyan kingdom on behalf of the Vijaayanagar empire. For better control of the Vijayanagaea empire over affairs in Tamil Nadu, he also appointed two other such "viceroys" both at Thanjavur and Senji (Gingee). These generals who were appointed as Viceroys to the three regions of Tamil Nadu by the Kannada emperor Acchuthadevaraya it so happened to be of Telugu race who earlier worked under the Karnataka king and loyal to him.

Naayakkar at Thanjavur
(1) Sevappa Naayakkar (A.D.1529 - 1560)
He was the cousin of the Karnataka - Vijayanagara emperor Achchuthadevarayan and brother ruling after of Krisnadevaraayan. Sevappa Naayakkar was appointed as the Vijayanagara viceroy by Achchuthadevarayan in the year A.D.1529
(2) Atchuthappa Naayakkar (A.D.1560 - 1600)
(3) Ragunaatha Naayakkar (A.D.1600 -1634)
He married the the daughter of the then Tamil Paandiyan king.
(4) Vijayaragava Naayakkar (A.D.1634 - 1672)
Mathurai Chokkanaatha Naayakkar invaded Thanjavur in which entire Thanjavur Vijayaragava Naayakkar and his sons died except his baby son Sengamaladaas who was taken by his Minister Venkanna who kept him in hiding. Chokkanatha Naayakkar left his brother Alagiri Naayakkar in charge of Thanjavur and returned.
(5) Alagiri Naayakkan (A.D.1672 - 1674)
But some time later Alagiri Naayakkar conspired against his brother to become an idependent ruler of Thanjavur. Venkanna raised to the situation and requested the Muslim Sultan of Bijapur his assistance in re-instating grown up Sengamaladas as the king in Thanjavur. Bijapur Sulthan ordered Venkaaji (also known as Ekoji) the own brother of Sivaji who was at that time only an army general under the Bijapur Sulthan to capture Thanjavur. Venkaaji after captureing Thanjavur refused to give Sengalamadas, and crowned himself as the first independent Maraatiya king of Thanjavur.
