Saar there is no need for me to do that. I read about in the late 70s and I am quoting it. The report mentioned the blockbusters in TFI and did say that Trisoolam was holding the record for the most takings at that date. I am just sharing it.
I would be very surprised if SKV is the first Tamil film to do 1 crore.

i recently watched manamadha lelai after a long time...Kamal at the age of 22 is outstanding in comedy role...For me the memorable charecter is kamal's assistant (Iyer who does katha kalachabam.. Most of us hated Kamal in those days - since we naively could not understand he was only acting - most thought he was just doing what he does in real life - lol!

I used watch movies that only has stunts....those are bygone days...

In manmada leelai, the comedy was sprinkled everywhere and worked really well particularly kamal and the iyer character (just one word Awesome)....

I also tried to watch "oru ootha poo kan simutugirathu" . there are two reasons 1. obviously kamal 2. the story based on novel (pushpa thangadurai)...i red the sumary of the story and felt it interesting... After watching few scenes particulary the emotional scene between kamal and his mom, i felt this is not the movie i wanted to watch...the emotional scene was very artificial and dialogues were horrible... if anyone seen the movie let me know is it still worth to take the risk.

Interesting Notes :-

As I had mentioned earlier this is not an exhaustive list.

Continuous houseful shows – It means the movie shows have gone houseful in a row. Some movies which are super hit might run for 200 shows as continuous houseful and then register houseful shows intermittently while still doing well

On the number of days I have erred on the lower side and will provide the exact number of days later when I get my hands on my record sheet which unfortunately is back home.

Where I have mentioned 175 days in Madras, it does not mean that the movie did not run for 175 days in other cities in TN.

There are several other movies that have broken box office records but do not figure in this list becoz they did not make it to 175 days or I just missed them and will add to this list later
Upto the mid to late 80’s one of the most popular way to judge the star power of an actor was by the length of the queue for advance booking in Madras. When it came to advance booking there was and there is no other actor/ -star who can hold a candle to Thalaivar. Some of the queues for advance booking for Thalaivar’s movies like Sakalakalavallavan, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Tik Tik Tik, Thoongathe Thambi Thoongathe, Raja Paarvai, Devar Magan (2nd week), Kuruthipunal were just astounding and cannot be matched by anyone

During MGR’s rule his cronies, even though they were also fans of Thalaivar, did not want anyone to break MGR’s record especially Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban’s record in Madras. Just to give you all some background on Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban –
Was the biggest box office record holder in Tamil films until Sivaji’s Tirisoolam
Ran for 25 weeks (regular shows) and 227 shows continuous houseful in Devi Paradise – Madras
For the advance booking during its release the queue started at Devi Paradise counter on the top floor (those days) and came winding down the ramp on to the car park, spilled on to Mount road and extended into neighbouring Shanthi theatre.

The movie was booked in advance for 28 days which was matched by Thalaivar’s Raja Paarvai (100th Movie)

Whenever a movie threatened Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban’s record in Devi Paradise and failed the fans of MGR will celebrate by printing some notices or posters till Thalaviar’s Aboorva Sagodharagal broke that record by registering nearly 300 continuous houseful shows

Interesting Notes :-

As I had mentioned earlier this is not an exhaustive list.

Continuous houseful shows – It means the movie shows have gone houseful in a row. Some movies which are super hit might run for 200 shows as continuous houseful and then register houseful shows intermittently while still doing well

On the number of days I have erred on the lower side and will provide the exact number of days later when I get my hands on my record sheet which unfortunately is back home.

Where I have mentioned 175 days in Madras, it does not mean that the movie did not run for 175 days in other cities in TN.

There are several other movies that have broken box office records but do not figure in this list becoz they did not make it to 175 days or I just missed them and will add to this list later
Upto the mid to late 80’s one of the most popular way to judge the star power of an actor was by the length of the queue for advance booking in Madras. When it came to advance booking there was and there is no other actor/ -star who can hold a candle to Thalaivar. Some of the queues for advance booking for Thalaivar’s movies like Sakalakalavallavan, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Tik Tik Tik, Thoongathe Thambi Thoongathe, Raja Paarvai, Devar Magan (2nd week), Kuruthipunal were just astounding and cannot be matched by anyone

During MGR’s rule his cronies, even though they were also fans of Thalaivar, did not want anyone to break MGR’s record especially Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban’s record in Madras. Just to give you all some background on Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban –
Was the biggest box office record holder in Tamil films until Sivaji’s Tirisoolam
Ran for 25 weeks (regular shows) and 227 shows continuous houseful in Devi Paradise – Madras
For the advance booking during its release the queue started at Devi Paradise counter on the top floor (those days) and came winding down the ramp on to the car park, spilled on to Mount road and extended into neighbouring Shanthi theatre.

The movie was booked in advance for 28 days which was matched by Thalaivar’s Raja Paarvai (100th Movie)

Whenever a movie threatened Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban’s record in Devi Paradise and failed the fans of MGR will celebrate by printing some notices or posters till Thalaviar’s Aboorva Sagodharagal broke that record by registering nearly 300 continuous houseful shows

SP Saar i rest my case on Salangai Oli. I do not wish to argue on this. I just wish to add that i use to see movies of Kamal, Sivaji and Rajini during my travels in India from 1983 to 1986. But the crowd for Salangai Oli was unparallel. Perhaps it was due to the sheer capacity of Kalai Arangam.

Thanks for your update on Puli. DJs in Singapore Oli were discussing this morning about Vijay donning 3 roles in Puli and one of the roles is similar to Appu Kamal of AS. Maybe it is just a rumour.

1) I posted that during fight was happening. 2) I am saying that not just this but i have seen him casting vote in many cine related associations in past. Among one, i remember one election where he wears an yellow shirt and thats during UV shooting, he had a clean shaven look. And one during VR2 shooting time. If you followed khfans twitter id you too wud hav known. and in none of them i hav seen other star coming to vote. Among one, i remember one election where he wears an yellow shirt and thats during UV shooting, he had a clean shaven look. And one during VR2 shooting time. இன்று உலக நாயகன் ஆகிவிட்டார். தமிழ்சினிமாவை தலைநிமிர வைத்த ஜாம்பவான்களில் கமலும் ஒருவர். இனிமேல் அவர் எந்த படத்திற்கும் நடன இயக்குனராக பணியாற்றப் போவதில்லை. அதற்கு அவசியமும் இல்லை. ஆனால் நேற்று நடந்த நடன இயக்குனர்களுக்கான தேர்தலில், கமல் ஆட வந்தபோது பிறந்தே கூட இருந்திருக்காத இளம் நடன இயக்குனர்களுக்கு ஓட்டுப் போட வந்தார். கமலே வந்துவிட்டதால் பரபரப்பானது தேர்தல் களம்.

i did check few messages over the weekend and had little fun but couldn't respond earlier before the whole posts were moved into recycle bin. Let me admit first I like both SS & UN and i stated in the past that i go to theater to watch a movie only if it's from one of them. but lately many KH fans are divulging into dirty talks on SS creating rift between groups then it warrants such responses from other gang. not trying to label myself a neutral but definitely this needs to stop, you talk about numbers you talk about hits etc but don't get to a personal level. this is disguising. we all should agree (or to disagree) that these two are the ones opened the market to all tamil films now younger gen are enjoying the fruits. pre sivaji, dasavatharam these avenues were very small.

can someone be neutral? apparently in this forum it it is not possible. either you have to be VJ fan or AJ fan or a KH fan or a RK fan. Why so? this trend needs to stop. i read forums for long time but this trend is only recently started and was seed by the so called 'dr' and few others. i have no complains about ppl saying bloated numbers etc but don't get to personal stuff.

not to start another argument but some of you are proud that KH doesn't use big technicians and RK mostly uses renowned technicians, reason is simple, RK is a directors actor. KH likes to be with his own gang, will always run into creativity issues with technicians so if you see him he's always careful to choose someone who just follows what he says instead of someone who stands against his creative decisions. both are right on their own stands. may be KH is overqualified for these fans but these two are the symbols of TN movie industry to outside world.:smile2:

Yes - recall the Thanga magan vs TTT releases - most ppl could relate to TM's mother sentiment angle better than TTT's mother sentiment angle, even though TTT had a super popular mother sentiment song ('naanaga naan illai thaayey') - mother sentiment was a must in the 1980s - pre-Nayagan years - for a formula masala film to succeed - no matter who the star was!

Both had IR in that kind of a form that gets a Mark Waugh or a David Gower scoring tons before lunch!

while TMM had the funky disco 'vaa vaa pakkam vaa', the orchestral/bass riot 'poomaalai oru paavai', and the dulcet 'raathiriyil poothirikkum', TTT had the colossal magnum opus 'vaanam keezhey' that not only equalled all of TM's songs, but remains unmatched in its orchestral grandeur to-date (add to that Kamal's befitting grace, though the special effects were limited by standards of those days)!

no - not by Kamal standards - it was more of a fun song - following the success of the terrible (both by Kamal and IR standards) 'katta vandi' from Sagalakalavallavan, AVM and SP Mutharaman must have decided on just a couple of fun songs for TTT - 'maama nee namma kitta' and 'summaa' were atrocious - when I meant a duet, something matching the class/standard of 'perai sollava' or 'ninaivo oru paravai' or 'vizhiyil un vizhiyil' or 'indha minminikku'..

and despite not having a Kamal-IR standard duet song, the film was a massive hit! primarily for the novel pattaiya kilappum bench fight/stunt by Kamal - never before in Indian cinema - Kamal's dance in 'varudhu varudhu' and 'vaanam keezhey' and the amma sentiment!

AVM productions hit a nadir in terms of creative contribution in the 80s - it became (just like Sathya Movies and Balajee productions) just a business house - no wonder Kamal had issues with all of them...he would have never gotten the nod from any of them for a film like 'nayagan' or 'pushpak' - those production houses were mired deep in cash punditry with not much interest in creative cinema - probably the late AV Meiyappa Chettiyar knew how to smartly invest in creativity to get the returns on the investment as well..

Even 'Yejaman' was done banking on the 'murattu kaalai' image of Rajini and IR's success with RV Udayakumar...

An artist whom I admire. A person whom I respect. An heart so kind to give out, and a mind so clear to take in, Kamal has always fasinated me with his films.

Looking back, several years of my memories blocks are spread inside his films. The FDFS, the quarrels with my friends and the support for his new ventures make me feel that this 56th year is just ticking into an hour (4 minutes left for that too) and there is a lot to come, as in many more years - to see, to experience & to enjoy pure Kamal Entertainment.

One has to be headed & grounded - a difficult & strange mix - to be this long in a field which is cruel in any which way possible, be it back-stabbing or leaving anyone bleeding. Kamal not only is a walking exemple of stubbornness but also an idol who saw to that everyone shines around him. His aids are numerous, and the laurels & accolades are not less than the 'A to Z' encyclopedia collections. And I always paid great attention to the literature works that he reads, writes and shares. Kamal is such an interesting library.

Amoung several of his film works (anything that comes to my mind), the one remarked work that totally took myself in is Satya. The young, composed & angry man is irreplaceable. I have a peculiar likeness towards his potrayal of humour. About his performance, I am not qualified much to talk about it, but there were moments when my lids failed to close. And one of my best experience is Aalavandhan, my perfect genre. Vikram is my favourite movie apart from every other single Kamal starrer. One of the films I worked hard with is Hey Ram. The visuals were extrodinary and even without any music it projected narrative richness (ofcoarse IR polished it to give the shine). Other movies include the ones during my school days, notably Kakki Sattai - the motta madi exercise is still a WoW. To cut things short (I include Guru here) as I cannot list all the huge likeness I have for Kamal - Today I am looking forward for more of his creations, a creator's work that I spontaneously welcome and adore without any reservations.

The talk of 80s reminds me how I become Kamal fan. During the time, we (the school kids from a village in old Coimbatore district) never bothered about the story and songs. We cared for the movie with number of fights and more bomb explosions and car chases. We used to check with others how many fights the movie had and that's the sole criteria to go for the movie.

Because of this criteria, Kamal's non-masala movies had no chance of attracting us and we give it a miss. Only, the TTT became famous because of the bench fight. It became talk of the class and school, lot of seniors were raving about this. I went for this movie only for that and liked the fights very much. Normally, Rajini movies used to satisfy the criteria very well. I have seen almost all the Rajini movies. After TTT, there was no Kamal movies, almost we forgot him.

Then came, 'Enakul Oruvan' for one Diwali. My family went for it as Diwali movie to the nearby town. I was simply mesmerized by the Nepali Kamal. In those days, We have heard a actor called 'Bruce Lee' and never seen any of his movies and no possibility to see the movies also. We have seen only the photos. We heard that he can break stones and even the mountains with bare hand and the technic called 'Karate' and have no idea about this. One senior informed us that he has seen the Bruce Lee movies and he can teach us the Karate. So, we formed a gang about 10 boys under him and were doing some exercises. No idea what are all those and no way of knowing that. Occasionally, this senior will be challenged by some other bystander who is new to the village or from some towns. He would say that what we are doing is not Karate at all and he knew very well about Karate and quote some more movies. Then, promptly, a dual will be arranged between our current master and the challenger to see who knows better. Normally, this will be arranged in our village river bank. Because, we cannot fight inside the village and river bank had sand that's good for falling and will reduce the body damages and we can remove the shirts also. (You cannot simply go home with wounds and your shirt torn, in such a case, you have to face a special dual with your father that would be nasty) The winner of the fight would be our new master

In this back drop, the Nepali Kamal impressed me to the core and we found a Karate Master. My father hated the movie and saying why is he doing this monkey business. He was never able to see what I saw in the same place and never appreciated what I liked in movies. This is the first time I was very much impressed with Kamal.

In that year Pongal, 'Oru Kaithiyin Diary' got released. I was dragged into the movie by a relative who is 4 years elder than me and who watches movies based on the directors like Bharathi Raja, Sundarajan and Manivannan. He always used to ridicule my taste and tried to educate about the art side of the movies which I never cared and cannot argue with him as well. Those days, I was dragged into lot of movies by my parents and relatives which I never liked to go. Because, they don't want to leave me home alone to my own devices of fun in the home. So, I went to Kaithiyin diary reluctantly. But, I liked the movie very much because of the revenge plot and decided to try Kamal movies in the future. Until then, I was not Kamal fan just an admirer.

Then, came mighty 'Kakki Satai' that sealed our fate and became fans.

What followed was horrible (movies).

Sometimes some movies are moved to second-string theaters and run 100 days (not in the same complex). Such things are "not considered" as 100-day movie.

In Mdu, paayum puli ran 100-days after moving to second-string theaters. and so, it was not considered a 100-day movie in madurai.

I dont know the details of this. paper-ad means not much. Most of the tie only in chennai it runs the same theater or complex, other smaller cities will be a "moved theater". So you needd to be careful when making a claim from a paper-ad. That's all. :)

I agree. AS was utter flop. It barely ran for five days and it was sold for ridiculous price, calling that it was 10 times bigger than SKV and TTT. And results as we know, the distributor and theatre owners were in streets within 2 days of release asking for the compensation from Kamal as he was the producer of the movie.

Ok. I just thought it was my duty to reinstate on what happened to Apoorva Sagodarargal. I still vividly remember that. Because there was big hype about kulla appu and big rush during first few days. I went to theatre and I did not get the ticket. I thought I would wait for one more week so the crowd free up. But what actually happened was really funny thing. The movie freed up from theaters from second week on wards. I am just reminding this thing to the current generation because we did not have internet and authentic sites like behind woods during that time.

Kamal latest duds were comedy..As I said before UV didn't do well and culprit is the 8th century comedy..

Pammal comedy is not great and its above average only not hit..but what happened after VRMBBS?
MX,MMA and UV comedy..all flop show though I like MX comedy a bit..As u get older comedy sense goes down,just check oldies in & around ur place..they will make some comedy and they themselves will laugh but for us it will be mokkai..the same thing happens to kamal..his comedy in last 10 years were bad and not liked by current generation.. and yes he is way ahead in terms of adapting to technology,screenplay writing,direction,lyrics,etc ..
his comedy is even good in serious scenes like UV hospital scene,VR but his normal comedy is very bad..

Even now, comedy genre from KH will definitely work! He just has to target the current generation - whether Crazy, Mouli will help, that's the big question. A full comedy movie completed in the next 4 months would be a welcome addition.

Even now, comedy genre from KH will definitely work! He just has to target the current generation - whether Crazy, Mouli will help, that's the big question. A full comedy movie completed in the next 4 months would be a welcome addition.

Theatre and film actor Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli, who confesses that she is a ‘big’ fan of actor Kamal Haasan, wanted to experience how Kamal Haasan would have felt donning vastly different characters in film after film. What did she do? Along with three of her friends — Lalitha Rajamanickam (Make Up), Subashini Vanangamudi (Photographer), Dakshana Rajaram (Stylist), she recreated the looks of her most favourite characters played by actor Kamal Haasan. A total of 9 movies were selected and 12 iconic still photographs were recreated.

“All four of us were bored and over a casual conversation we thought we should do a tribute of sorts to this man. Also, this was an opportunity for me to fill the shoes of characters we all have loved so much,” says Lakshmi Priyaa.

While Lakshmi Priyaa says that the effort was in part inspired by Vidya Balan’s photo shoot for a popular movie magazine recently, where she recreated old movies, she wanted to give it a twist. “The idea was to do a female version of the characters. I didn’t want to sport a moustache,” she says.

Being die-hard fans, this all-women team were obviously spoilt for choices. They first listed out their most favourite movies, struck out those films that were too difficult to reproduce. “For instance, we couldn’t do the look of Aalavandhan because the big arms were the highlight. We picked films where the characters stood out,” she said.

Was the experience worth it? “I have always watched him as a member of the audience but being an actor was slightly different. I loved him as an audience. But when I became an actor, I could appreciate his work in a better way. We learnt that the man has even changed his skin tones in few of the characters. It was challenging and a great learning experience.”

In my view, atheism is basically a subset of theism..... the more you question and seek reason for the religious / spiritual practices, the more you can become spiritual and atheism is very much required to keep theism clean.... unfortunately there are so many fake atheists as much as fake theists.... which is why both has somewhat became a subject of mockery.... ...... and I can see Kamal as a pure spiritual person (except when he sometimes compulsorily tries to prove that he is non-believer of GOD)...who questions useless / irrelevant superstitions.... His spiritual understanding comes to the fore in many of his films like Anbey Sivam, Dasavatharam etc......

Kamal Haasan said the first massive certification programme in the media and entertainment sector would be held in November.

National-Award winning actor Kamal Haasan on Thursday emphasised on the need to develop the skills of workers employed in the film industry to address the lack of skilled professionals.

Haasan, who was in the capital to attend the Global Skill Submit 2015 at FICCI as the chairman of Media & Entertainment Skills Council (MESC), said he and other industry insiders are working in this direction.

“The federation of film employees and MESC are coming up with certification programme for those who are already at work in the field and also new ones...

“We will train assistant directors, camera assistants, music assistants, writers, lightman, art directors, audio, make-up, costumes and dubbing artistes.”

Haasan said the first massive certification programme in the media and entertainment sector would be held in November.

The “Sadma” actor also requested the industry to join hands for the initiative.

“We plan to have a three-day workshop in November where we intend to shut down the industry for three days so that no one has an excuse of work. This is very important as it is for the future of our country and our industry,” he said.

Comparing the media and entertainment industry to the IT sector, the “Vishwaroopam” star said it was high time that the fraternity realised its strength.

“Media and entertainment is a huge industry than what we assume and the only parallel we have is the IT sector. But, we have not put our energy to good use, so we don’t know the actual power of this industry.”

Speaking at length about the initiatives taken by MESC, the actor shared the details of the skill development programme to be offered in various streams of the industry.

“We have affiliated 100 training centres and have already enrolled 5,000 students pan India. We are trying to bring digital convergence across all sectors of the media and entertainment... The MESC has a mandate to train 11.24 lakh skilled man power. MESC did an analysis and came up with 74 job profiles across various sectors of Media and Entertainment,” Haasan said.

Kamal Haasan the actor, director and producer is a known face. But he is also chairman of industry body Ficci’s media and entertainment sector skill council, which last week announced a Skill Certification Prog*ram*me for film industry workers. Excerpts from an interview:

In the motion picture industry, most high-end jobs like visual effects and graphics used to go to the US. Do you see a change?

It is already reversing. When PM said ‘Make in India’, the first industry that did it was media and entertainment, especially the animation industry. They are already making in India for Hollywood, like Life of Pi. Now a small portion of Hollywood’s hard labour is also done here. All the major studios have set-ups here. I foresee they will start making basic films here, because of cheap labour. For that we have to develop skills. If there is a skilled workforce and the labour laws are flexible, then they will ‘make’ here.

This is a worker-led initiative. We start with certifying the existing level of skills of some 10,000 people, before bringing in new ones. If we invest in skills, we can reap tenfold. The films would become excellent; the workers would be worth more than they are now. change fast. Get a degree, and you are an engineer for life. But you can’t stay like that in any position here. Do you think a PhD in literature would certify a scriptwriter? We want to bring all the top guys to certify them in workshop we organise.

Kamal has brought the best of the best among just ANY MDs he has worked with. only few exceptions are ppl like DSP. But even with him, his Dasa BGM surely was too good enuf among his other works(?) and also was very apt for the film. In fact he brings best of the bestest out of ALL the artists and technicians he works with! (There is surely some magic within him! and i guess he surely wud hav realised that much b4! Just that he wont agree to name it in lines of some divinity! ) But its just taht we only see MDs' works!

Personally even kamal too may not bcome too close with him. But since TI is an pan indian subject and this time the producers themselves from north and also a lead hero from north(Saif) its apt to chose an pan indian MD and not the TN limited ones like gibbu etc. SEL are more popular only in North, same goes for Pritam guys etc. So ARR is kinda correct choice for this film. To the best of my knowledge, IR said openly about working with Kamal "He is a taskmaster - unlike most others - working with him is the most challenging" - this was in a 1995 Doordharshan interview..

Later on, on quite a few occasions, one can see IR genuinely awestruck not just by Kamal's talent, but his passion for his craft!

Whether they work together or not, their mutual admiration and respect is at a stratospheric level - if Kamal begins a word, IR can finish it and vice-versa - such is their team chemistry!

on par with or even better than the chemistry the likes of Shankar Jaikishen had with Raj Kapoor, or SD Burman and Dev Anand!

As for Kamal's ability to bring the best out of any MD - anyone who is as dedicated to and immersed in his/her craft - will have a definitive influence on those working with him/her - so that is the magic!

i have my reservations about a direct hindi movie by thalaivar. thats apart, i cant digest seeing SAK as a lead actor :banghead:
that guy is an useless prat having no acting acumen and being hated unanimously by hindi film goers and all his movies (where he acted alone without being a sidekick of another khan) were bombed. what KH is playing at.. GOK

They had a difference of opinion during Indian but came together again for Tenali and after he film's success the same team started Naran which was shelved. But since then, they've maintained a good relationship only. ARR did walk out of Dasa but it was mainly because of time constraints. Kamal wished ARR for his Oscar win and ARR wished Kamal in person in the Kamal 50 function organized by Vijay tv. Also they joined hands for Marmayogi.

To Act in Pothys AD (8 hours calsheet and 15Crores!!! :thumbsup: :claps: ) (and spend art of that money for welfare!) is a very wise decision! Becos, he is slowly shedding himdelf off from the regular hero mould. in coming days he wont act in typical hero heroine kind stories and mostly he will do a Lead role with absolutely NO romance stuff and no heroine. so he is at tip/treshold of being a hero! also he looks good now and also the expectation meter on him is Red Hot! So its wise to use all of that and encash his popularity in a great way like this and also do welfare from that money! After few years his looks will further deter(though he maintains as best as possible) and he may not be a regular hero.
