Top Kollywood stars want to do their own stunts now. Why this thirst for danger?

The number of freak accidents involving stars who choose to do their own stunts is on the rise. In the last few years, stars like Ajith, Suriya, Vishal, and Dhanush have suffered many injuries while filming stunt sequences.

So, why do they put their bodies on the line? Most insiders say actors are keen to be identified with their onscreen image — that of a macho hero.

Vishal recently cut his fingers on an asbestos sheet while jumping off an overbridge during the filming of Poojai. He says actors today are under pressure to push the envelope and do something new every time. “It has been eight years since a double performed my stunts. The reason: I don’t want the stunts to look monotonous; they need to dazzle the audience, excite them. As an actor, I have to constantly raise the bar.”

Cinematographer Om Prakash has seen Ajith hurting his knee during the shooting of Arrambam and Dhanush twisting his ankle on the sets of Anegan. He says the audience is getting smart and can see through camera tricks. “Most actors are aware that audiences can figure out when a double is doing the shot. That’s why they want to do it themselves. It lifts the entire sequence.”

He explains that it’s not usually the dangerous sequences that result in accidents. “In Anegan, Dhanush had to run through a forest. Unfortunately, he had to jump over the track laid out for the camera and twisted his ankle. But, full marks to him, he continued with the shoot.”

Stunt Silva, who choreographed the dangerous sequences for Ajith’s Veeram, says, “There’s heavy competition. Older actors are being pushed by the younger ones, who do their own stunts.”

Why do actors ignore the risks? Social media consultant Arun Rajagopalan says it could be a marketing tool. “When an actor jumps from a bridge, it gets talked about. It’s good publicity.”

Until recently, the word of the stunt choreographer was final in matters of safety, but big stars seem to be calling the shots now. “Not really,” says Vishal, “I leave it to the stunt choreographer who knows what’s best. For instance, there’s a scene in Samar for which I had to get hit by a van. The foreign stunt master said I couldn’t do it and I didn’t.”

In S.P. Jhananathan’s Purampokku, Arya performs the risky stunt of running on top of a moving train. Says Jhananathan, “It was Arya’s decision. First we shot with a dupe, and then Arya did it himself. It was a risky stunt where he had to crouch between the compartments and then run on top of the train. It’s not new; actor Vijayakanth has done it before.”

Experienced filmmakers urge young actors to learn the art of performing stunts before trying them out. “A friend of mine, Babu, who even played the lead in En Uyir Thozhan, is now bedridden because of a stunt gone wrong,” says Jhananathan.

“Martial arts and stunt choreography are different,” says stunt master Pandian; “In cinema, it's about faking the punch. It is easier to punch than to fake it.” Pandian believes the buck stops with the stunt choreographer. “Young actors might want to do it because they get a kick out of the danger. But it’s the duty of the stunt master to explain the risks.”

'ஆயிரத்தில் இருவர்' பத்திரிக்கையாளர் சந்திப்பில் இயக்குநர் சரண் தனக்கு அஜித் கூறிய தத்துவம் ஒன்றை நினைவு கூர்ந்தார்.

அஜித், ஷாலினி நடித்த ‘காதல் மன்னன்’ படம் மூலம் இயக்குநராக அறிமுகமானவர் சரண். 'அமர்க்களம்', 'பார்த்தேன் ரசித்தேன்', 'ஜெமினி', 'ஜேஜே', 'வசூல்ராஜா எம்பிபிஎஸ்', 'அட்டகாசம்' என பல வரவேற்பை பெற்ற படங்களை இயக்கினார். 'அசல்', 'மோதி விளையாடு' என கடைசியாக இவர் இயக்கிய படங்கள் போதிய வரவேற்பை பெறவில்லை.

4 வருடங்கள் கழித்து வினய் நாயகனாகவும் சாமுத்திரிகா, ஸ்வஸ்திகா, கேஷா கம்பட்டி என மூன்று அறிமுக நாயகிகளை வைத்து சரண் இயக்கியுள்ள படம் 'ஆயிரத்தில் இருவர்'. இப்படத்தின் அறிமுக பத்திரிக்கையாளர் சந்திப்பு சென்னையில் நடைபெற்றது.

அப்போது இயக்குநர் சரணிடம், "நீங்கள் பெரிய நடிகர்களிடம் பணியாற்றி இருக்கிறீர்கள். அவர்கள் யாருமே உங்களுக்கு உதவ முன் வரவில்லையா?" என்ற கேள்வி எழுப்பப்பட்டது.

அதற்கு சரண், "பெரிய ஹீரோக்கள் கூட படம் பண்ணிதான் பெரிய டைரக்டர்னு ஒரு அங்கீகாரம் எனக்கு கிடைச்சுது. எல்லாருடைய வளர்ச்சிக் காலத்துலையும் அதிர்ஷ்டவசமா நானும் கூட இருந்திருக்கேன். ஒவ்வொருத்தரும் ஒவ்வொரு விதமா எனக்கு உதவி பண்ணிருக்காங்க.

அஜித் ரெண்டே நிமிஷத்துல ஒரு லைன் மட்டும் கேட்டுட்டு எனக்கு ஒகே சொன்னாரு. நீங்க இயக்குநர் பாலச்சந்தர் கிட்டேர்ந்து வர்றீங்க. உங்களுக்கு இது முதல் படம் வேற. உங்களுக்குள்ள ஒரு வேகம் இருக்கும். கதைய கேட்டு எந்த விதத்துலையும் நான் அதை கெடுக்க விரும்பலை. நீங்க என்ன வேணாலும் பண்ணுங்கனு அவர் கொடுத்த ஊக்கம்தான் இன்னைக்கு என் நிலைக்கு காரணம்.

'அசல்' படத்துக்கு அப்பறம் நானும் அஜித்தும் சேர்ந்து படம் பண்றதுக்கான சூழல் இருந்துது. அதை அஜித் தான் உருவாக்கி கொடுத்தாரு. சில காரணங்கள்னால அது நடக்கல.

அஜித் எப்பவுமே "வால்ல தீ இருந்தாதான் ராக்கெட் மேல போகும். அப்படி இருந்தாதான் நம்மளால வேலை செய்ய முடியும்" அப்படின்னு சொல்லுவாரு. அது எப்பவுமே எனக்கு ஒரு இன்ஸிபிரேஷன். எல்லாருமே அவங்களாலான உதவிகளை எனக்கு செஞ்சிருக்காங்க." என்றார்.

All three have been great to work with. Ajith was my first co-star from the three which makes him and my relationship with him special. Working with him was a lot of fun and was a great learning experience. He's certainly one of the most charming men I've met.

Not just with JIgarthanda, right from his first movie kadhalil sodhappuvathu eppadi (rough college senior), Pizza (suspecting husband), Neram (comical villain "Vatti Raja"), Soodhu kavvum ( Nayantharaku sela vechcha kinda innocent "Pagalavan", "yen yen intha moonjila romance'eh varamaateenguthu" :lol:) and Now Jigarthanda. He is one of the promising next gen actor.

Ajith's next film with director Siva is already in the news, even though the star is still busy shooting for his 55th film with director Gautham Menon.

Regarding 'Thala 56', the director Siva is heard to have finalized his technical team and he is expected to make things official after August 15th, once the producers for the movie are finalized. It seems that all the leading production houses in Tamil as well as Telugu, are willing to fund the movie as it marks the coming together of the successful Veeram combo again. With both Siva and Ajith enjoying a fair share in the Andhra market, producers from Andhra are showing a lot of interest.

Pongal 2014 will always be remembered for the epic Thala Vs Thalapathy Clash where both the movies Jilla and Veeram went on to be huge blockbusters despite the mixed reviews. But Producer's Council President Keyar has just shocked the K'town industry declaring both the films as big flops as distributors have suffered huge losses.

Keyar said the movie bosses have fooled media and public as the actual figures of Jilla and Veeram would totally shock the world. He went to say that the media reported wrong information about the movies collection without cross checking and analysing it. He also took a potshot at a leading and reliable critic and trader stating he wrote a total baseless box office report chart regarding Jilla and Veeram.

Keyar then went on add that Goli Soda is the only commercial movie released in the year 2014 that's has earned profits for everybody involved in the movie.

Watched Aadaama Jeichomda yesterday.. Thala all over in the movie. Cutouts, Arrambam and Manakatha scenes were shown.. There is a sequence in the movie happening at Pilot theatre where Arrambam is played. Movie is worth a watch.

In recent times virtually every weekend at least one movie refers something related to Thala. A detailed article about this trend in today's Times Of India.


Watched Aadaama Jeichomda yesterday.. Thala all over in the movie. Cutouts, Arrambam and Manakatha scenes were shown.. There is a sequence in the movie happening at Pilot theatre where Arrambam is played. Movie is worth a watch.

Ajith has become an icon like Rajinikanth

Movie one: The hero is trying to get away from his kidnappers and a shootout of sort happens. The hero escapes by jumping through the screen. It is a tense scene. But rather than nails being bitten, what you witness are whistles and claps inside the movie hall at that moment when you get to see the star whose film is playing on the screen.

Movie two: The end credits begin rolling, showing the favourite cars of various celebrities. Not surprisingly, applause breaks out now and then, but the biggest cheer is saved for the final star.

Guess who the star referenced in both these movies is? No, not Rajinikanth, but Ajith! The films? Aadama Jaichomada and Burma respectively. These films are not the only ones. In the last two months, over half-a-dozen Tamil films have managed to stir up excitement in the audience by either showing a shot of Thala or referring to him through a dialogue. When the hero of Sigaram Thodu goes to watch a movie, it is an Ajith film (Veeram). When the heroine of Yaan flips channels on TV, it is Ajith who appears on the small screen.

Says the director of Burma, Dharanidharan, "There are quite a few reasons why I decided to keep Ajith for the last frame. One, he is a racer. Two, I think there is a craze around the actor at present and also, I like him as a person. But most importantly, when I showed the rough compilation to my assistants, what they talked about later was Ajith's choice of car because it was a modest Indian car and most others had imported cars as their favourites. I felt that it would create a buzz in theatres but I never imagined the kind of response that it eventually got."

Film historian Mohan Raman gives a historical context to this trend of star references and says that this is a practice that has been in vogue for the last 20-30 years.

"While MGR and Sivaji Ganesan have not referenced their predecessors, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have used these two actors' names or images occasionally in their films. Meanwhile, the post 80s actors have referenced Rajini and Kamal quite a lot. When Shah Rukh Khan can use Rajini to promote his film, why shouldn't smaller stars here use Ajith?" he asks.

A veteran film producer and chronicler, on condition of anonymity, says that in the last three-four years, Ajith has assumed the role of an heir to Rajinikanth and commands similar respect. But he feels that the media has played a huge role in hyping up the image of the star, and compares it to how Rajinikanth was turned into a force after Baasha. "Today, Ajith has become a similar icon, though the market for his films is still nowhere like that of Rajini," he says. He also feels that the actor himself has let this image catch the fancy of youngsters.

"While Vijay has the family audience and kids among his fans, for the youth, it is Ajith who has become a huge idol. This is why anyone who utters anything against Ajith gets trolled and threatened in cyberspace, which is made up mostly of youngsters. And today, theatres too are mostly frequented by the same crowd, and directors have caught on to the fact that there is a huge response to this star among them," he says.

Thala56 - a big budgeted urban action saga!
Days after completing his film with Gautham Menon, Ajith will kickstart shooting for his next film with Siruthai Siva. The star joins hands with the director for the second time, after the success of their rural entertainer Veeram.

Sources have now revealed that this new film will be an urban action flick, to be shot on a budget of above 50 crores. Siva is currently in the process of finalizing the script, and has confirmed Santhanam to play the role of comedian. Though Hansika has been approached to play the heroine, an official confirmation is awaited in this regard.

AM Ratnam, who has recently produced Ajith's Arrambam and the ongoing Thala55, is expected to produce this flick too. It is worth mentioning that after Nic Arts (9 films), Thala Ajith is doing more films with AM Ratnam, who supposedly looks like a lucky bankroller for the star.

That is the beauty of Thala. Thala trusts new directors a lot than established directors or directors who are low mainly purely because they have the fire in them and have something in them to excel.

Or may be who knows Thala would have heard about this story from Siva before doing Veeram. He would have wanted to experiment with Veeram before doing this Urbane flick if reports are true as the budget is on the higher side. There could be lots of happenings in the background for Thala to go with Siva when we hear that ARM is waiting for Thala. :)

Thala never fails to surprise me.If he had selected GVM for his 50th film(then GVM wanted to work with him) and after 55th if he would have selected ARM think about the market supremacy he will have

Instead he went with VP for 50th which resulted in one of the most entertaining and I hope even this movie will turn like that

IMO, actually thala is not at all worried about his market if we look at the way he has gone with the selection of the movies, directors etc. He doesn't do movies with established directors just to increase his market value but will do only if he like the story/script too much and the most important of all the compatibility which we have been hearing in various interviews.

Let us take the example of Mankatha...director VP after some successful movies though...he didn't take off...but a movie with thala....pedaled him to different plane altogether...same with Siva....even after Veeram blockbuster...thala wanting to do a movie with Siva which will take Siva to greater heights...

In the meantime when Saran was lying low...thala did Asal with him but it didn't do well....Aalwar new director...that too didn't do well...lost opportunity by the new director...Aegan with Raju Sundaram didn't do that great...

now GVM who was low and had many financial problems...when he is doing a movie with thala when thala called him up....GVM is elated and wants to prove a point...next movie with Siva will be more experimental for Siva if it is an urbane flick and guess Siva can't imagine anybody else but only ajith doing this movie...

Ajith is a GREAT GAMBLER....Mankathaa....

the most funniest part is that ARM is tweeting the video by itisprashanth....

and the worst part if whatever gopi says is true then ARM shouldn't have used Ajith's name when he not even told the story to Ajith just for some media mileage and then going on to do a movie with Vijay with the story which was planned for Ajith but not yet even told once to Ajith. If Ajith had rejected after hearing the story and then Vijay has gone on to do....that is acceptable and is a different story altogether...

and the worst part if whatever gopi says is true then ARM shouldn't have used Ajith's name when he not even told the story to Ajith just for some media mileage and then going on to do a movie with Vijay with the story which was planned for Ajith but not yet even told once to Ajith. There was a talk tht Thala and ARM were going to team up for a double role film. ARM had been saying for some reasons the film didn't materialze and he is always ready to work with Thalai. If you look beyond the surfae, it sounds like Thala was not willing to work in that project. So it is possible Thala would have been made aware of the rift in ar muru camp due to the stealing controversy. So it's possible thats the reason he walked out. We will never know exactly what happened but seeing Thala's nature, I am confident that's the reason he backed off.

What is the difference? Please educate me. A remake is called a freemake if it does not acknowledge the writer. At least in the second instance there is the stolen script and one has to work atleast a little to present it well on screen with the unkown factor of how it will turn out. But a freemake? Something has already succeeded. Using it over again and you have the advantage of changing things that do not work. And above all the audacity to tell 'no this is not a remake'. This is not with reference to Aegan. But for all the freemakes that Tamil Industry has done.

it is better to post sense rather than defending one actor. We are talking about Rettai Thala script being the same as Kaththi and Ajith walked out based on the stories that's been circulating. If you look at Gopi's interview, he even talks about 7am Arivu Bodhidharman history being told to ARM...guess ARM doesn't have a good set of Asst. to get information rather than rely on some other channels to get information freely without acknowledgment or payment.

Even an IIT-cum-IIM student Chethan Bhagat had to face the same problems when he was duped by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Raj Kumar Hirani and Aamir Khan for 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan duped the Original writer of TZP, there has always been controversies.

As we debate, the director of Madras has done an out-of-court settlement with Gopi if news information is to be believed.

We might ask why didn't Gopi, a director, not register his story in the Writer's association etc etc. really don't know why didn't he do this....though it is outright foolish of him he should have been careful of ARM when he was narrating the bodhidharman history to ARM for 7am Arivu and then a story for Kaththi....lucky for Vijay who might have told ARM to give him a hit and not involve in this story controversy so that he can wash his hands safely and enjoy the success....had this movie flopped then this Gopi for sure wouldn't claim otherwise there will eyebrows raised... :lol:

The ace director says he has a tailor-made role for the top Tamil star

​Kaththi is still raking the moolah, but director Murugadoss, the man with Midas Touch, is not one to rest on his laurels. The director is all set to helm his next big project with superstar Ajith in the lead. Murugadoss is perhaps the most-sought-after director in Kollywood these days. This year alone, he has delivered two mega hits - Holiday (Hindi version of Thuppakki) and Kaththi. Most of the producers and actors are queuing up before the director for a project, but the fact remains that Murugadoss always picks the actors he wants to work with and Ajith tops his list now.

Trade sources indicate that Murugadoss is keen on working with Ajith in 2015 and leading banners are ready to lap it up. The director too recently confirmed about his next project. "I have a tailor-made role for him (Ajith). I am waiting for his call... The project will take off soon," Murugadoss said, refusing to reveal details about the project. The production banner expected to take up this project is also not known yet.

Ajith is busy wrapping up Yennai Arindhaal, an action movie being directed by Gautham Menon. The movie has Anushka Shetty and Trisha Krishna playing female leads. He is expected to commence shooting for his next movie to be directed by Siruthai Siva. However, it is not clear whether he will take up Siva's flick or Murugadoss's first.

Apparently, Murugadoss had narrated the script to Ajith earlier this year and they had agreed to work in it in 2015 as both were busy with their commitments this year. Ajith and Murugadoss have been friends for more than two decades and not many know that the star had helped the director in his initial days. In fact, Murugadoss's debut movie (Dheena) as a director was with Ajith. For many years, Murugadoss had been an assistant to another well-known director S J Surya. It was Surya, who helped Murugadoss put together Dheena, which was a moderate hit.

"Since then Murugadoss has been longing to direct a movie for Ajith. Unfortunately, it did not materialise because of various reasons. Now, the time has come for them to join hands. We are expecting a blockbuster, which will go on the floors during the first quarter of 2015," said a trade tracker, based in Chennai.

We hear that Murugadoss has already commenced the pre-production work on the untitled project.

Shankar and 2 ARM movie accepted, but he did a movie with Nesan who might not be debutant, but he was new director for a big star. Right now i dont see Ajith doing any movie with new directors. He is also depedant on exp. directors like GVM.

7th sense Kuppai, Velayudham was Kuppayo Kuppai. 7th sense was celebrated since You guys claimed Vela was the best movie of the decade which was nothing but a remake of yesteryear film from Telugu "Azad", But everybody claimed that was not a remake.

From thirumalai - thirumalai, thirupachi, sachin, aathi after that director's sullan flop, ATM, vettaikaran, sura and now Jilla. Even after many moderate films he continuously giving chances to new directors.
AFAIK, both vijay and ajith giving chances to new directors continuously.

Atleast I am not trying to say Vijay is the best or claiming to be number 1.

I dont have any prob if Ajith becomes number 1. But to make Ajith number 1, calling Vijay names, make him look like dumb and all his fans are idiots thats when it troubles us.
