Karthi learns to ‘shoot and strike’ for Madras
We know that Karthi plays a resident of north Chennai in Atta Kathi Ranjith's Madras. What's interesting is that the actor learnt the basics of football to portray the character he plays in the film. Reason? It's one of the sports that is popular in north Madras.

Ranjith says, "This is not a sports-based film. Madras is set in north Madras, and depicts the residents' way of life. Carrom and football are two of the sports that are often played by youngsters there. So, we wanted to show Karthi playing these two sports. There are no elaborate sequences or matches, but scenes that have Karthi playing carrom and football will appear prominently in talkie portions and songs. In fact, he trained in football before we shot the sequences because we both wanted it to look natural on the big screen."

Comedy not Karthi’s cup of tea
Actor Karthi, who has been going through a rough patch as far as his film career is concerned, is eagerly waiting the release of Madras, directed by Attakathi Ranjith. The actor's recent releases including All in All Azhaguraja bombed at the Box Office and critics too drubbed it down.

Karthi, was recently quoted saying in an interview that comedy didn't work out for him. He said that he chose comedy as children and womenfolk were averse to action subjects. The actor is pinning all hopes on Madras that's all set to hit screens on July 25.

Once upon a time ... semma opening.
The Trailer BGM is Suvar Theme from the movie album. Santhosh Narayanan does not disappoint, yes, this time too. The contrast between the melody and the tension in the scenes elevates the trailer, nice work. @1m31, wonderful scene, followed by an extraordinary top angle. The "silk" dialogue was catchy.

I can play a glamorous role any time: Catherine
Catherine Tresa, model-turned-actress, has taken up a de-glam role in her debut Tamil film, Madras. The Karthi-starrer, which is set in North Madras, has Catherine playing Kalai, an area ponnu, who has no makeup or flashy costumes. Even Karthi had remarked that he was stunned by her makeover for the role.

Given that debutantes usually prefer a glamorous character for their debut, ask Catherine why she chose such a de-glam role, and she says, "Everybody does not get a character like the one I have played in Madras. I am playing the love interest of Karthi's character, Kaali, in the film. Kalai is not the usual girlfriend character, who comes only for the romantic scenes. Love blossoms between them when she emotionally supports Kaali, and the bond strengthens when she is part of the ups and downs in his life. Kalai will give a new definition to a girlfriend."

About her makeover, she says, "I have avoided makeup and I have undergone a complete makeover for this role. Even Karthi couldn't recognize me on the first day of the shoot. I have also learnt the Madras slang to get to know my dialogues." She adds, "I can play a glamorous role anytime, but such challenging roles come only rarely."

Ranjith nailed it in the first half... :clap: :clap: better than his debut movie, the interval block was quite arresting, those streets of north-madras, their slang, stunts were well directed....

Felt lengthy second half 'coz of the repetitive stunt scenes... santhosh narayan BGM been overused...

Watched the movie yesterday evening. A very crisp tale which moves solidly from where it starts.

The 2nd half is the heart of the story - how 'hysterical' Kali is been 'sentimentally' traped - and the following episodes are emotionally rich, esp. the very long scene at the beach, Karthi was just amazing in that scene where he brings out several emotions by just translating the various message discussed. The whole proceeding needed much time to sink or potray the emotional trauma of Kali to advance the story, else, it would have just been another cliched revenge story. Its also kind of repetitive, initially he gets tensed with his romance episodes and get relieved by his firends, but the second is quite different taking into account the gravity of the loss and an approach quite riveting. Also, it would be interesting to jot the characterisation of Kali, a very emotionally depend type, who expresses like a ram when need comes. Hats off Ranjith for crafting such an intense character and chaining it with apt suituations.

The climax is more a challenge for the cinematographer - "Lights-on Lights-out" kind of scenario. It worked with me, as I was engaging myself by moving to see what happens when things gets into dark parts, and then watching with interest the parts under the light. Its quite similar to the interval block, and yes, it can be coined as repetetive, a version longer.

Santosh Narayanan bgm was quite attractive, like during the pump-set scene. Towards the end, it gets ticking faster in accordence wtih the momentum in the naration. Certainly not an ordinary work which was quite able to sink with visuals, direction and performence - something quite rare these days.

There are so many sub plots in the movie, quite well woven by Ranjith. Thinking that the 1st half is not about Kali atall, the principle character, still amazes me how Ranjith had efficiently registered this character to explain the action. And the formidable scene from the trailer where Kali's shadow grows bigger than the Wall, comes at the right place elevating the whole plot taken.

Quite a brilliant film, with some glad performence from most of the artists.

LoL. Should get the DVD and jot all his dialogues, all were superb. Jhonny was amazing - The way he swings the news paper and puts it under his arm in just one flow, all the while uttering lines was wonderful.

Hari Krishnan - Mariyan/Attakathi - well, couldn't indentify him yet, maybe its Jhonny' character getup which does not allow me to see him properly. While revisiting either of the films, I will keep Hari in mind. Thanks Siv.

Madras - a very good movie beyond expectations. A perfect guy's movie - I doubt women will enjoy. Not much of fights but very violent.
Not many songs in first half, but 2nd half had too many.
Heroine is very beautiful, but as always, is just a sugar-coat.

Except for Karthi, the rest of the cast were new but acted brilliantly :thumbsup:
Especially noteworthy were Johnny character (absolute treasure), the aaruyir nanban and his wife (ennamaa actingpaa!), and even Karthi's mother. Dammit... the funeral scene moved me... :sigh2:

Where do they get hold of these people?
The dance troupe was also impressive.

Madras has all the makings to become legendary.

First half was amazing. Especially the pre-interval action scene. 2nd half fell dramatically. The climax was rushed and looked weak. Supporting cast steal the show especially Anbu and Jonny. But one of the better films to come this year so far.
