Thamiz, that scene by scene review is a spoiler. Glad I skipped it after reading the first few lines ;)

Reviews aren't too good for Lingaa. Some say it is watchable but most of them call it disappointing, especially climax. Several tweets are pouring in & #Lingaa finally started trending at #5. But haven't seen many positive tweets yet.
Waiting for critics's reviews...

FINALLY

FINALLY FINALLY

Watched Lingaa - One time watchable for Rajini..mathapadi padam romba sumar thaan..

The team wanted to release the movie on 12/12, the same effort could have been put in making the film..

Rajini is the biggest saviour of the movie..His energy, style and his dialogue delivery just electrified the screen..KSR an excellent screenplay writer fails big with poor execution..BGM & RR is a average stuff from ARR..

The worst part is the climax..bayangra sothapal..:banghead:

Thamiz, no point in being so desperate. Max, we see average reviews. The expectations are huge & if it fails to satisfy, the fall will be too hard. Just have a look at the way ppl make fun of this movie in Twitter, after watching FDFS (One tweet said they could have made Powerstar to do the climax instead of Rajini).
HCRK fans still say "Superstarkaaga paakalam...etc...etc...Aana padam yeppidiyum odidum" :-) But if you are still thinking I'm the only person who doesn't have any positive things to say about Lingaa, you are mistaken. Already Muthalvan and Samajith have posted their comments. Lets see what others have to say.

Sothappal..!!! KSR is to be blamed... ARR fails to impress

You cant say "only KSR and ARR to be blamed"..Producers,eros and rajini also to be blamed..why??
They want to release the movie by dec 12 so they made it very fast..ARR usually takes time but very less time given to him..KSR in the audio launch said still lot of work left in PP but producers and eros are adamant to release by Dec 12..
By the way I look it KSR would have planned for grand climax with great VFX work like atleast half of enthiran climax but producers didn't give the freedom and forced him to complete by nov..that's the reason climax had become worst..
And all we know ARR is not giving his best nowadays and rajini fans already were fed up ARR music but he is continuously picking ARR..atleast for quickie like this he could have gone for other music directors..remember vidhyasagar made good music for CM
Atlast rajni fans need to accept that his health had taken its toll and KSR had lot many constraints..

Why blame ARR? His last three outings with Rajni are Sivaji, Enthiran and Koch. While the first two were instant chartbusters, Koch's only plus was its music. Especially the RR.

Rajalingeswaran steals your hearts!! Lingaa is rocking!!!

Movie Rating: 4/5
Director: K. S. Ravikumar
Producer: K. Karunamoorthy an A. Subhaskaran
Music Director: AR Rahman
Written by: K. S. Ravikumar, Pon Kumaran
Cinematography: R. Rathnavelu
Cast: Rajinikanth, Sonakshi Sinha, Anushka Shetty

The moment of excitement has arrived. Millions of frenzied fanatic fans of Rajini across the world have been waiting in utter eagerness to watch Lingaa ! Now the D-Day has arrived! It is Lingaa and Lingaa renting the air silently all the way to the theaters! Rajini mania is just getting out of hands with theaters bursting at the seams with fans thronging the theaters.

Story: The movie begins in a village in an environment of pre-independence days. Raja Lingeswaran, maharaja to a dynasty that rules many states during during pre-independence days is an officer with authority an IAS who is honest and always at the service of people. To the people he is God. He is feared by the crooks and respected by people. Raja Lingeswaran has a dream that of building a dam. So he decides to build a reservoir solving both the problems water and employment in one shot. But his dream of building a reservoir fails as the British Government betrays him and kills his dream of building a dam. He leaves the town.

The movie moves forward and takes us to the present times where young Lingaa plays a happy-go-lucky-guy role with his friends always around him. By a quirk of fate, he goes to the same village where his granddad Lingeswaran was an officer and was worshipped by villagers as God. The problems in the village has worsened with people still suffering. The young Lingaa girds up his loins and wovs to fulfil the dream of his father that of building a dam for his villages. Will he build the dam? Has he succeeded in solving the problems in the village is all forms the rest of the story. This is the story in a nutshell.

Plus Points: Rajini’s performance is electrifying. Especially his intro scene when the theaters go bursting with the shrill catcalls and whistles. His one-liners and punchy dialogues are really rocking. The power of punches hasn’t faded in him. His stunt sequences are rocking and especially the train fight is just amazing. Thanks to Hollywood stunt master Lee Whitaker who superbly composed the fight; and Rajini performing the train stunt with aplomb and ease. The King Lingeswaran has really stole the show; and with that your hearts too. Rajini’s intro solo song was rocking and exciting. Costumes of Raja Lingeswaran were excellent and kudos to the costume designer. The costumes only enhanced the persona of King Lingeswaran. Anushka and Sonakshi Sinha only added spice to the movie with their wonderful performances. And his wry smile with a slight twisting of lips… Oh that’s just fantastic. “Thalaivar in Unmai Oru naal velum is priceless” !!

Lingaa Punch: “Mannarukku thevai makkal thunnai, athu aandhavan punyathule ennukku nereya irukku”

Minus Points: The storyline has a powerful theme. Yet it was dragging at places where Rajini’s presence isn’t there. Photography has captured pre-independent era and is good. Music is good. Especially a number with Sonakshi Sinha is just rocking. Re-recording is pretty bad.

Analysis: The entire movie was carried on the shoulders of Rajini and his one-liners and punches.

Verdict: This is out and out Rajini movie. A must watch !!!

Story:
People in a village gather at a dam in their area, even as government officials start checking its safety, in the presence of MP (Jagapathi Babu).

That night, the MP and his men kills the chief engineer (Ponvannan). While breathing his last, the engineer tells the village chief (K Vishwanath) that the temple near the dam, which was closed for decades, should be opened to save the village.

The village chief feels the temple should be opened by the grandson of Raja Lingeswaran (Rajinikanth), a king-collector-engineer, who constructed the dam.

His granddaughter Lakshmi (Anushka) starts the hunt for Linga (Rajinikanth), and finds him and his friends (Santhanam, Karunakaran & Co) to be thieves.

She manages to bring them to the village, where Linga comes to know the hoary past of his grandfather and how he constructed the dam braving all odds.

Coming to know that the dam is under threat, he vows to save the giant structure and the village. Why the MP kills the engineer, why the engineer says the temple should be opened to save the village and how Linga saves the people forms the rest of the story.

ANALYSIS:

It's out and out Rajini show and Lingaa is a complete feast to his fans. The Superstar walks, jumps, fights, dances and flies, giving goosebumps to his fans.

Anushka is trendy as Lakshmi and helps the grandson Rajini to achieve his mission. While Sonakshi, who comes in flashback scenes, is traditional and a pillar of support to grandfather Rajini.

Jagapathi Babu and K Vishwanath perform well, but heavy Telugu accent in their dialogue delivery could have been avoided. others in the cast include Vijayakumar, Radharavi, R Sundararajan, JP, Nizhalgal Ravi and Ilavarasu (who has a meaty role and delivers solid performance).

Rathanavelu aka Randy deserves all appreciation for showing Rajini in a youthful avatar. A R Rahman's music and background score have done a magic off-screen.

There are many punch dialogues and messages in the movie and the way Rajini deliver them are wow-some. There are only two fights (one on the train and other during climax), but both of them are of James Bond quality.

Director K S Ravikumar has given a royal treatment to Pon Kumaran's story and has made Lingaa a treat to Rajini fans. And producer Rockline Venkatesh has ensured that it is a grand fete, by roping in 1000s of junior artistes in most of the scenes.

The statutory warning for Rajini films is not to look for logic and other loopholes, but to look for Rajini alone. If you are okay with that, Lingaa is for you.

Rating: Good
Director: K. S. Ravikumar
Producer: Rockline Venkatesh
Starrer : Rajinikanth, Sonakshi sniha, Anushka Shetty, Santhanam
Music : A.R.Rahman

Superstar Rajinikanth is back to rock the big screens with Lingaa, directed by KS Ravikumar. This movie presented by Vendhar Movies, is produced by Munirathna and Rockline Venkatesh and has music by AR Rahman and cinematography by Randy aka Rathnavelu. Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka play Superstar's heroines and are supported by an able and ensemble cast.
The movie opens to an engineer (Ponvannan) surveying a dam with the whole village of Solaiyur looking on. The village headman Karunakaran (K. Vishwanath) and the area's Member of Parliament (Jagapathi Babu) are also among the onlookers. That same night, the engineer is murdered and just before he passes away, he asks the elderly Karunakaran to open the Shiva temple located close to the dam. The engineer's death is believed to be an accident by the villagers. The temple has remained locked for over 70 years and when the villagers ask Karunakaran permission to open it, he reveals that according to his father's oath, only a successor of Raja Lingeshwaran should open it. He sends out emissaries to different parts of the country to search and find Raja Lingeshwaran's only remaining successor - his grandson (Rajinikanth). However, hating his grandfather for not leaving him any wealth, the grandson - who has also been named Lingeshwaran, has shortened his name to Linga and is a petty thief, who steals small objects along with his gang (Santhanam, Karunakaran, Balaji), for a living. Linga and his friends are caught by the Police and are in jail, when an unknown lady reporter - Lakshmi (Anushka) comes and rescues them. Lakshmi reveals that she is from the village of Solaiyur and wants Linga to come to the village, to reopen the temple. Though reluctant at first, Linga and his friends go to the village, to escape from the Police.
On reaching the village, Linga learns that the Lord Shiva sculpture in the temple is made of a rare precious stone and plans to steal it and settle down for life. It is here that he learns of his grandfather - Raja Lingeshwaran (Rajinikanth). Lingeshwaran, also a Cambridge graduated engineer, first came to the village of Solaiyur as a Collector, in the British era. On learning that the farmers of this village and the surrounding villages are facing severe floods for 3 months and complete drought for the remaining 9 months, he appeals to the British government to help build a dam in Solaiyur. His fellow British collectors and their chief ridicule him and refuse to help construct the dam. He resigns as a Collector and takes up the construction of the dam on his own. Being a very rich Maharaja, he puts in his own money and goes about constructing the dam with the help of the villagers (Radha Ravi, Vijayakumar, R. Sundarrajan, Sonakshi Sinha and many others), much to the chagrin of the Britishers, especially Collector Hunter. In an unfortunate turn of events. just when the dam is nearing completion and there are torrential rains endangering the dam and the village, Linga is forced to seek Collector Hunter's help. Hunter puts forth some conditions, sticking to which Raja Lingeshwaran loses all his wealth and is also disgraced by the villagers. The angry villagers chase him out of the village, asking him never to return again. What were the conditions put forth by the Britisher? Why did Raja Lingeshwaran lose all his wealth? What happens to the dam? Why are the villagers angry with Raja Lingeshwaran? What plans does the corrupt MP have for the present day dam? Watch Lingaa on the big screens to know...
Director KS Ravikumar has given us many super hits with the Superstar in the past and is all set to give another one with Lingaa. Known as the king of commercial entertainers, he has lived up to the name in his latest directorial too. The story is larger than life, just what the Superstar's fans would want to see him in on the big screens, after a big gap! The director has seamlessly woven the past and the present in this movie set in two different eras. The dialogues need a very special mention with Superstar getting to deliver some new punch dialogues. Some of the dialogues like, "I have not failed. I have just postponed my success... See you soon!" bring the theatre down. Putting together such an ensemble cast and above all completing a movie of this magnitude in just 6 months, is absolutely mindboggling and the producers deserve all the credit for this. Director Shankar is known for having one or 2 extravagantly made songs in his movies but KS Ravikumar has made all the songs in Lingaa on this scale. The Superstar is back with a bang and rocks with his acting, stunts, dialogue delivery and style. However, the biggest plus is the way he has gelled and shared the comedy sequences with youngsters like Santhanam and Karunakaran, He has brought out the differentiation in the two characters he has played and as Raja Lingeshwaran, steals the cake. Anushka is the show stealer and looks absolutely gorgeous on screen. Sonakshi Sinha as the village belle Manibharathi has made a stellar debut in Tamil. Her emoting and dancing are top-notch Anushka and Sonakshi, despite not sharing screen space in any scene, have vied with each other for acting honours and both have performed brilliantly. Santhanam is his usual comic self and his oneliners are ribtickling. Karunakaran does not have a meaty role but carries himself well in the scenes he appears in. Veterans Radha Ravi, Vijayakumar, K. Vishwanath and R, Sundarrajan breeze through their roles. Jagapathi Babu is apt as the corrupt politician. The actors who play Britishers, especially the stars playing Collector Hunter and his wife, excel.
AR Rahman's sound tracks are already topping the charts and the visuals take them to a totally new plane altogether. However, with so much being spent on the project, the graphics could have been better. The train sequences in the flashback and the climax sequences could have been better showcased in the graphics. Randy's cinematography is an absolute treat for the viewers. The way he has managed to film the outdoor shots especially the dam scenes and the one shot from the top angle when he covers an entire royal dining table with all the people seated on it are top class. Editing is crisp.
Lingaa has all the elements that a blockbuster project in the combination of Superstar Rajinikanth and KS Ravikumar would have and some more... Thalaivar fans, don't miss it!!!

http://senthilrailway.blogspot.com/2014/12/blog-post_11.html

All Rajini fans love this movie!!! :)

They all write +ve reviews!!

Seriously ? Maybe I entered wrong movie theater I think, Because what I saw was nothing short of "One of the Worst Movie of Rajini's Career"
Ofcourse I was happy to see me healthy and back in action. But out right this movie was not meant to be "Rajini Movie" No matter who says what.
It was a colossal waste of time nearly 3 hrs!! , with zero importance to story,screenplay.. BGM and the list goes on..

Verdict :
KSR's Padaiyappa Part II a very kiddish attempt to re-create the magic. Very disappointing.

Loved the movie. Thalaivar looks awesome for most part.
Songs & BGM are big let off.

Movie will definitely be a hit.

I didn't accuse you of anything. Even Hattori mentioned that the film is getting average reviews and he is not a Vijay fan. Couple of Vijay fans saw the FDFS and posted their views. Tats all. I am a Vijay fan too and like any other movie buff here, I can't wait to watch it tomorrow. All i request is lets not club a few as fans of another actor and hence they are posting bad about the film. :)

http://www.sify.com/movies/lingaa-review-tamil-15058734.html

Rajinikanth’s KS Ravikumar directed much hyped Lingaa was completed in record time but has arrived almost twenty years too late. It is a predictable old-fashioned entertainer that's a throwback to those mid-80’s mass masala films, and it’s hard to tell if there's anything original to this story at all.

Lingaa is a mixed bag. The star charisma of Rajinikanth is intact but the film is long with a weak storyline that flounders with a long drawn out climax. Rajini films are always well packaged and have powerful supporting cast, most importantly a deadly villain and a story with a foundation.

Lingaa follows the same tried and tested formula of KS Ravikumar with a typical Rajinikanth template. A comic first half leading to an emotionally charged flashback and a long drawn out climax. There are two Rajinikanth’s- Raja Lingeswaran a King who constructed a dam for his people against the machinations of the British and Lingaa his grandson a petty thief who does the unfinished job of his grandfather.

The vintage Rajinikanth is back with his style and dialogue delivery intact. The film is a treat for his die-hard fans who have not seen him in a live action for nearly four years. Among the two heroines Anushka has a better role while Sonakshi is wasted. The villains Jagapathy Babu and some unknown foreigners are the film’s biggest drawback. They do not match up to the hero in a single scene, which makes it lacklustre.

The music of AR Rahman is a big let down. Not even one hummable number and picturisation is very similar to earlier Rajinikanth films. Technically, Lingaa is just average except for the grand visuals of cameraman Rathnavelu, who has done a neat job. The VFX in the climax are tacky and clearly indicates that things were done in a jiffy.

The screenplay of Lingaa skittles from cliché to cliché, packing in every stereotype you can think of. What saves this film from complete disappointment is Rajinikanth the larger-than-life superstar. On the whole, Lingaa is a well-worn, formulaic fare that might appeal to viewers who find comfort in the familiar, and who are still excited by the age-old hackneyed stories about a mass hero turning savior to a village. If it's not entirely unwatchable, you have Rajinikanth to thank!

Verdict: Strictly for Thalaivar fans!

Lingaa - 2.75/5. A template #Rajinikanth film where superstar delivers but packaging & story does not live up to the expectations.
Lingaa – 2.75/5. 1st half is a jolly good ride, initial flashback scenes including train fight is terrific, 2nd half long drawn out climax.
#Lingaa -2.75/5. It is pure vintage @Rajinikanth in style & punch dialogues, but the story lacks emotional connect and weak villains.
#Linga 2.75/5. Highlights - #Rathnavelu's camera & #SabuCyril's production designs. C it for 1-man entertainment troupe called #Rajinikanth.

USV,

Why blame ARR? His last three outings with Rajni are Sivaji, Enthiran and Koch. While the first two were instant chartbusters, Koch's only plus was its music. Especially the RR.

Ajay,

I agree Kochadaiyan had some wonder full songs, but in Linga it is a big let down!, I have not seen the film yet, hence can not comment on the BGM , but none of the songs stays in mind that easily ! Rajni + ARR +SPB songs Have always been Chartbusters , but "oh Nanba" (minus SPB), there is nothing to say about this song, it lacks the energy and kick of an opening song for Rajni !

The movie was pretty decent. Only hope there could be someway out to remove the climax stunt portion. While the heroism was so underplayed throughout except for few political references this stunt plays a huge spoilsport. The overdone make up of Rajini in the initial portions was a dampener. Raja Lingeswaran Rajini was top notch in performance.

I like Aamir's response in this context...

http://www.rediff.com/movies/report/aamir-khan-i-dont-select-films-in-order-to-break-records/20141208.htm

Ghaijini was the first film to earn Rs 100 crore at the box office. How do you see this trend going forward?

It’s a very unfortunate trend. The moment people start thinking about numbers, it influences the kind of films that an actor will sign.

The moment I start choosing films which have a potential to do Rs 100 crore at the box office, my choice becomes limited. I don’t select films in order to break records.

If I only look at numbers, I would not have done a film like Lagaan or Rang De Basanti. That was the fifth remake of Bhagat Singh. It makes no sense to tell that same story again. Or I would never have done Taare Zameen Par. It’s a film about a dyslexic child. What potential does it have in terms of box office numbers?

My choice of films is dictated by my creative instincts. Numbers is the last thing on my mind when I’m listening to a story.

A lot of actors inflate the box office figures of their films and pass it on in trade circles and as press releases.

It's childish. For some reason, people in the film industry feel that by inflating the figures, they will convince people to watch the film.

You even get to buy editorial space in newspapers, and say how much business a film has made. It's extremely unfortunate.

It’s meaningless because when you go home, you know how much business the film has done. Even the industry knows exactly how much each film has done.

You can try and fool people but how many times will you fool them? Ultimately, you are just fooling yourself.

Exactly. Actually it had everything even for a normal fan, but like I said before music was a let down seriously. May be Rajini & KSR didn't pick the right tunes this time.
Other than that, haters are going to be very disappointed with the result. Never seen this huge release in US.

Cast : Rajinikanth , Anushka Shetty , Sonakshi Sinha

Direction : KS Ravikumar

Producer : Rock Line Venkatesh

Music : AR Rahman

Lingaa marks the return of Superstar after Endhiran (2010) along with his favourite buddy, Director K.S.Ravikumar. Lingaa is no never near when compared to Endhiran because Director K.S.Ravikumar is not Shankar, but guys Lingaa as SUPERSTAR do we need anything else??

Storyline of Lingaa is neat and simple but not much effective as Muthu or Padayappa. Let’s dig into the story line more. Great Raja Lingeshwaran’s grandson was being searched by Solaiyur village people to reopen a temple near the Solaiyur’s dam. Typical Superstar intro song follows with usual racy screenplay of K.S.Ravikumar. Lingaa (Rajinikanth) hates to be called as grandson of Raja Lingeshwaran and but when he gets to know what Raja Lingeshwaran gone through to build a dam in Solaiyur, he starts to respect him. When a badiee wants to destroy the dam, Lingaa arrives to save it. Then usual climax follows with low CG work and no logic.

Anushka Shetty and Sonakshi Sinha did their job well and nothing much worth for mentioning. Big, big flop of Lingaa is A R Rahman’s music. His songs or BGM nothing is impressive. There are plenty of logic issues in make-up dept, art dept, no impressive music or camera work but who cares when we get to see our Superstar for 3 hours on-screen. Lingaa is a complete entertainer for Thalaivar fans. Forget all your logics, just go and enjoy Thalaivar’s darshan on theatres. Star…SUPERSTAR is back..!!!

Verdict – If you are a critic or a movie lover of logic & sensible films, then please don’t jump for Lingaa. It’s only for SUPERSTAR fans..

http://www.rediff.com/movies/report/lingaa-review-two-much-of-a-good-thing/20141212.htm

he Superstar turns 64 today, and his fans get a double birthday treat with Lingaa, says Saisuresh Sivaswamy.

At almost three hours Lingaa is perhaps a tad too long, but the producer and director’s compulsions are understandable.

THE Superstar, as Rajinikanth is known to his legion of followers worldwide, returns to the silver screen in flesh and blood after a three-year hiatus (Shankar’s Endhiran/Robot in 2011 was his last); in the meantime there was only that blink-and-you-miss-it animation Kochadaiyaan.

As if to make up for lost time, there are even two Rajinikanths in Lingaa, grandfather and grandson who are both called Lingeshwar/Lingaa, and you are thankful there was no father-mother in between to stretch the plot further.

Yeah sure, the film does test your patience at times, but Rajini papers over those moments with his trademark charm, witty dialogues, and not a bit of help from his gang of thieves.

Yes, you read that right, contemporary Rajinikanth is a petty thief living in near penury, who disowns his heritage, in particular his grandfather, a king in British times, for not leaving any wealth behind for the family. The erstwhile royal’s present-day subjects, meanwhile, need him back badly to deliver them from some evil that is about to befall the dam built by the king against all odds.

That, in short, is the story. Now imagine it stretched to three hours.

The film’s basic premise is clearly laid out right at the beginning with the murder of an unknown man on the dam and who flings a rudraksha into an old temple before he dies.

The villagers realise that something is amiss and the villager elder convinces them that the only way to save themselves is to get the unknown heir of the king back.

Enter the present-day Rajni to trademark whistles and frenzy in the auditorium. It is a blast to watch the petty thief and his friends, including the irreplaceable Santhanam, go about their trade. The first 20 minutes or so pass by breezily, before they are tricked by Anushka Shetty into returning to the village.

With that you know a flashback is just round the corner. It is, and when the king with his opulence is introduced as the original Rajnikanth, you know it is a matter of time before he is tricked/volunteers into giving away his wealth to the people.

Since that is a recurring theme in the Superstar’s films, of the raja turning into a fakir, it should come as no surprise. Another imperative in a Rajni filim are the few giveaway dialogues scattered throughout that allude to his popularity among the masses, his good heart, service before self philosophy etc.

The flashback into British times is the culprit that stretches the film interminably into boredom territory, and it could easily have been truncated by 30 minutes, which would have made the film taut and a lot more enjoyable.

Unusually for a Rajini film, there aren’t that many fight sequences; the grandfather has one before the interval, as does the grandson in the climax. The first one is spectacularly choreographed, including a duel on a running train. The final clash is shorter, and aboard a hot air balloon, both fights elevated to another level thanks to some amazing CG work.

Naturally, all is well that ends well, and in the here and now, though the grandson does get served his just desserts at the end. Wittily, of course.

The length is not the only jarring point about the film.

There is the voluptuous Sonakshi Sinha who, apart from being a glorified prop, is the antithesis of a people living in drought-hit land where people are shown committing suicide to escape their misery. Think about it, hardly anyone in that village looks famine-hit, though the aridity of the land is the reason for the dam to come up.

Of the two heroines, the bolder Anushka Shetty shares a better chemistry with the Superstar. Perhaps because she is from a conservative era, Sonakshi, although shown to be the epitome of Subramaniya Bharathi’s Modern Woman, doesn’t have much of a crackle with Rajinikanth, not even in the mandatory dream sequence in Mona Gasolina.

And I know it is sacrilege to criticise A R Rahman’s music, but of the five songs in the film, only one, Indianey Vaa, had the anthem potential, the others being just about fine. You are welcome to disagree, of course.

But even where the songs didn’t jump out and grab you by the throat, the set designs simply stood out. Talking about which, art director Sabu Cyril’s work throughout the film is top-notch, and after Rajinikanth is the only other thing to linger on in your mind.

But, Rajnikanth.

What can you say about his onscreen charisma, his star value, that hasn’t been said before! His regal gait, his mannerisms, his style, they are simply unmatched, leaving much younger stars behind and gaping. And to believe that he turned 64 today!

An indicator of his longevity and evergreen status: actor Vijay Kumar, who plays a key role in the flashback, began his film career along with Rajinikanth all those years ago; Vijay Kumar used to be the hero then, and Rajni the villain. Slowly Rajni morphed into an actor, a hero, a star and finally the Superstar, leaving everyone far behind.

Director K S Ravikumar’s last outing was the atrocious Hindi film starring Sanjay Dutt, Policegiri, and going by it he should be given a wide berth. But he does have some good films to his credit in Tamil, including Kamal Hassan’s Dasavatharam. He also directed Rajni in two films, both block-busters: Padaiyappa and Muthu.

Does Lingaa fall in the same category? If you are a Rajini buff, yes, it definitely does.

http://www.nripulse.com/lingaa-the-hero-with-a-thousand-faces/

Film: “Lingaa”; Cast: Rajinikanth, Sonakshi Sinha, Anushka Shetty, K. Vishwanath, Jagapathi Babu, Vijayakumar, Radha Ravi, Santhanam, Karunakaran and Dev Gill; Director: K.S. Ravi Kumar; Rating: ***

In one of the scenes in “Lingaa”, Rajinikanth is seen reading Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero with A Thousand Faces’. The camera zooms in on the book’s title from different angles to emphasise that it was included for a very strong reason. According to director Ravi Kumar, his hero is Rajinikanth, and his thousand faces are that of a collector, a king, a civil engineer, a patriot, a socially responsible citizen, a leader, a communist, and finally, a common man. Rajini proves he could be anybody on screen. He could go from a king to a pauper in a scene and audiences won’t mind it because he’s the hero with a thousand faces.

All that you want in a Rajinikanth film is packed in abundance in “Lingaa”, which doesn’t disappoint his legions of fans. From his signature walk to bizarre stunts to philosophical touch in dialogues to his reluctance towards politics but interest in serving people — every scene illuminates with Rajini’s presence. In another scene, Rajinikanth jumps off a mountain on his sports bike to land on a hot air balloon (reminds you of the scene from Jackie Chan’s “Armour of God”). Any other actor in his shoes would’ve been subjected to ridicule and mockery.

“Lingaa” is a social period drama that unfolds in the pre-independence era. It follows the story of Raja Lingeshwaran (Rajinikanth), a collector during the British regime, who becomes instrumental in the construction of a dam in a village called Solaiyur. In the process, he loses everything but not his self respect and will power. When a group of villagers ask Lingeshwaran why he threw away a king’s life for the villagers, he replies that a person with a happy heart will remain happy forever.

The film is filled with such quintessential Rajinikanth dialogues, included in the story at the right junctures to give his fans an adequate dose of inspiration along with entertainment.

It’s always advisable to watch a Rajinikanth film with least expectations and that’s very much applicable to “Lingaa” as well. While it’s wonderful to see the superstar do what he’s best at in a live action film (after the disastrous “Kochadaiiyaan”), the wafer thin story of “Lingaa” is a letdown. The story gives us a flashback of several of Rajini’s own films and the most evident of all is “Sivaji”.

“Lingaa”, which released on the superstar’s 64th birthday, desperately tries to hide his age, and it succeeds at that. Rajini hasn’t looked so dashing in ages, and the swagger with which he carries his role, is a treat to watch. One of the best examples is the age-defying stunt sequence (choreographed by Lee Whittaker) atop a moving train. If you’re wondering how could he possibly pull it off (even with the help of VFX), you should remember it’s also one of his thousand faces.

If there’s one thing that really bothers in “Lingaa”, it is its running time. Agreed it’s a Rajinikanth film and that it comes probably once in a few years, so it shouldn’t be a problem to sit through three hours. But it seriously isn’t easy after getting used to shorter Tamil films in the last few months. Another area of concern is A.R Rahman’s music, which doesn’t quite touch the bar he had set with his previous collaborations with the superstar.

Both Sonakshi and Anushka don’t have much to contribute. The former has a lengthier role, yet there isn’t much scope for performance.

“Lingaa” gives Rajinikanth a ticket to entertain his fans and he doesn’t let them down.

Lingaa Review
Behind the Movie Lingaa: Super Star Rajinikanth is offering a birthday treat for Fans with ‘Lingaa’ releasing worldwide today. Director KS Ravi Kumar is the best man to exploit the image of Rajini and he handled the project under production of Rockline Venkatesh with Anushka, Sonakshi Sinha as female leads. Let us get into review part now.

In the Movie Lingaa: Story sets off with introduction of Lingaa (Rajinikanth), a petty thief along with sidekicks (Santhanam and others). There is Lakshmi (Anushka), a TV reporter running behind Lingaa with a purpose to drive him for Singanuru, the ancestral village of Lingaa. With a diamond jewelry robbery, Lingaa is forced to shift Singanuru in order to escape from police.

Here comes the real substance in movie with Lakshmi’s grandfather (K Vishwanath) narrating glorious flashback of pre independence British era involved with Gadwal Province King Raja Lingeshwara (Rajinikanth) fought against colonial British rulers to construct a Dam in Singanuru providing livelihood to 36 villages. Although the task is finished with Raja Lingeshwara and support of Bharathi (Sonakshi Sinha), modern day corrupt politician and Singanuru MP Bhushanam (Jagapathi Babu) is set to destroy the dam. How Raja Lingeshwara’s great grandson Lingaa saves it is the climax.

Values of the Movie Lingaa: Basically, ‘Lingaa’ is not a typical canvas to showcase Rajini’s trademark stylish mannerisms. This is completely a story driven film with KS Ravi Kumar taking on a safe and tested template boosted with imperial flashback arranging a strong platform to touch human emotions, patriotism, innocent romance and philosophical touch. When Rajini is at center, the show gets different and it happened here. Writing by KS Ravi Kumar and Pon Kumuran is perfect for a Rajini film. Main pillar of ‘Lingaa’ is Rathnavelu’s cinematography. He captured the visual beauty of landscape at Dam construction spot with superb camera work. Most of the aerial shots imprinted a mark of grandeur while the Art Work of Sabu Cyril was spell-bounding. Train Action Episode introducing Raja Lingeshwara was a top quality CG work. Editing by Samjith was a superior quality work for flashback and inferior in dealing the first half younger Rajini episodes. AR Rahman’s BGM is unparalleled. He breathed real life to crucial scenes with outstanding BGM. Songs wise, Mona Gasolina and Indian Ayi Raa were the first catchers. Coming to production values, words aren’t enough to illustrate the luxurious standards of Rockline Venkatesh. Such a big project completed in less than six months of time needs special appreciations on the kind of planning went in background.

When we do analysis on performance, Rajini was more effective as Raja Lingeshwara in an impactful flashback. We have enjoyed Rajini’s flashbacks in Muthu, Arunachalam, Basha and other films. Apparently it’s the same stencil drawn yet Rajini is at very best. He delivers a majestic performance with evergreen screen presence. Younger Rajini wasn’t effective as old one. Anushka filled the glamour part of first half. Second half is completely dominated by Sonakshi Sinha who has fit into the role so perfectly bringing lot of freshness. Among others K Vishwanath, Jagapathi Babu and Nizhalgal Ravi were fine. Brahmanandam’s comedy failed. Santhanam and batch did their best to add the fun quotient. Rest of the village star cast suited to the core.

Out of the Movie Lingaa: When audience takes the exit door, character of Raja Lingeshwara is the only strong imprint to haunt them. Flashback portions of second half are the only to stand out. Take off wasn’t so great with younger Rajini and Anushka scenes getting prolonged in boredom. Only later is the story positioned for beginning the strong flashback. All the key scenes in second half are major strengths for ‘Lingaa’ to become a BO winner. Climax was a mere formality with action of Rajini on bike and hot air balloon looking out of this world.

All in all, ‘Lingaa’ is a tailor made film to attract Rajini Fans. The sketch is old and Rajini is forever new. It’s a typical Super Star package. Keep the expectations low and you might have good time in theater. For Fans, this can be a good meal to enjoy. Box Office is going to shake both in Telugu states and Tamil Nadu for next one week. ‘Lingaa’ is a safe one time watch for Rajini’s interminable charisma.

Cinejosh Verdict of Lingaa: The Show of Raja Lingeshwara.

Cinejosh Rating: 2.75/5

Lingaa – 2.75/5. 1st half is a jolly good ride, initial flashback scenes including train fight is terrific, 2nd half long drawn out climax.

Lingaa - 2.75/5. A template #Rajinikanth film where superstar delivers but packaging & story does not live up to the expectations.

Songs kooda ok.. but BGM was a big let down not sure if it was the theater in which I saw... but using Haricharan for the pathos was a big loser decision... Hariharan would have done magic...

Andhraboxoffice says..

Rajini`s Lingaa has opened to Good Boxoffice all over AP/Nizam. The Numbers are especially good in Cities & Towns and are average in smaller centres. Lingaa is excellent in Multiplexes with most of the shows being Full for entire day. All `A` Centres have seen huge release, numbers will be good although it hasn`t seen fulls from afternoon after Largely full Noon. It is likely to be biggest ever opening for a Dubbed film barring any Big drops for Night shows. But it should have been better especially in Ceeded. And It is very early to estimate, but May touch 6 cr Share mark in AP/N on 1st day. But the big question is how it is going to fare from tomorrow with Public talk being `Average` at best.

Lingaa: Why can't a Rajini movie be a better movie?

One question we ask of most Rajinikanth movies, as we exit them, is this: Why aren’t they better? As a star, he occupies a universe of his own, so budgetary issues can’t be the problem – you could ask for the moon and get it. With him on board, there’s going to be little trouble getting the best supporting actors, the best technicians – heck, you could hire the wizards who choreograph Bond movie stunts. And his films have become biennial events, if that. Lingaa marks his return to the screen four years afterEnthiran (the animated Kochadaiiyaan doesn’t really count). Isn’t that enough time to write a rock-solid script that does his stature justice while also satisfying his fans? Why, then, do these outings come off less like movies than a hastily put-together dispensing mechanism for a Rajini fix? Take a puff during the opening weekend. The effects will last two years.

But consider, also, director KS Ravikumar’s plight. It’s hard enough making a movie with any big star, with all the calculations that go into what the star’s on-screen character can be allowed to do. Imagine, then, accommodating all the must-haves of a Rajinikanth movie. You have to pay tribute to the past (here we have lyrics from Baasha, a snatch of the title song from Billa). You have to look forward to the future, which involves the inevitable speculation about a political career. (This film’s plot is about a dam that will irrigate the drought-stricken lands of Tamil Nadu’s farmers, and there’s a reference to a Supreme Court ruling. We’re told that Rajinikanth has behind him “makkal sakthi", people’s power. We’re also told he can become governor, or end up in Parliament.) You have to try and work in socially relevant issues as well. (This film, in one stretch, tackles the issue of caste.)

You have to think up punch dialogues that will outlive the movie. (It’s unlikely the ones here will. Sample: “Vaazhkayile edhuvume easy ille. Muyarchi panna edhuvume kashtam ille.”) You have to accommodate the actor’s interest in spirituality, which means weaving in lines that refer to God. (Yes, fans, there is apparently someone who Rajinikanth himself considers a higher power.) You have to have scenes where the Rajinikanth character gets emotional and ends up making great sacrifices for the well-being of the other characters, and, alongside, you have to have scenes where the other characters burst into tears and remark how great the Rajinikanth character is. And you also need a heroine or two. (Two, in this case, Anushka Shetty and Sonakshi Sinha.) No, this isn’t about Rajinikanth’s age. After all, if an ageing Sean Connery could play Bond in Never Say Never Again, there’s no reason to get worked up about Rajinikanth romancing much-younger actresses. But there’s the pesky problem about his image, which will not let him strike any real sparks with these heroines – he has to keep them at arm’s length. And this does the romantic tracks no favours.

With all this, it’s a small miracle that the person summoned to make a 'Rajini movie' doesn’t turn chalk-white with fear and flee to a foreign country under an assumed name. But that cannot excuse the films.Lingaa is talky and overlong (nearly three hours), plagued with pacing issues, and – worse – tells a story that lays no claims to our emotions. Rajinikanth plays two roles. In the present-day portions, he’s a thief, and a lot of time is wasted on this character’s doings (one of them a heist involving a tennis ball, balloons, and sticker pottu) till we get to a British-era flashback that is this film’s reason for being. Here, Rajinikanth plays a munificent king who’s also a Cambridge-educated civil engineer (weren’t they all?) who decides to build that dam.

Of course, there are people who don’t want that dam built, and the chief villain is a Brit whose name I never caught. That’s another problem. Rajinikanth’s films work best when he’s butting horns with a strong adversary – the deranged Neelambari in Padayappa, or Rajinikanth himself playing a robotic terror in Enthiran. The villain here is unintentionally hilarious (just watch him wrap his tongue around words like “nayavanjagam”). With the preordained outcome, the stakes are negligible.

It’s easy to overlook the inaccuracies (though with a production this big, you’d think they’d do more research) – at a palace ball, we hear symphonic music when the musicians on stage are playing guitars and drums; in the flashback, set in 1939, we see repeated references to Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, which wasn’t published until a decade later. But it’s harder to forgive the near-complete lack of entertainment, save for a late-in-the-day action sequence where Rajinikanth jumps on a motorbike and does what we pay to see Rajinikanth do. The theatre erupted at this point – out of sheer relief, it seemed to me, at finally having something worth cheering about.

Oh, there was one other scene that ushered in much excitement. It’s when we learn it’s the birthday of the Rajinikanth character in the flashback. A cake is wheeled out. People sing the birthday song. Fans watching Lingaa on its day of release, December 12 (Rajinikanth’s birthday), will enjoy being in the superstar’s vicinity as he cuts his birthday cake. But that’s just a temporary high. Next time, how about a film that leaves us with happy memories on other days as well?

Rajinikanth's new film is political to the core

http://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/reviews/lingaa-review-rajinikanth-s-new-film-is-political-to-the-core/article1-1295871.aspx#sthash.3wogF7nX.dpuf

Much like the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MG Ramachandran, who used cinema to play a do-gooder, propagating Dravidian doctrine, Rajinikanth has often essayed characters with strong political overtones. Of course, there is a difference between these two men. While Ramachandran or MGR, as he was popularly known, believed in a certain political ideology and pursued his ambition to become part of a political system, Rajinikanth has no such ambition. At least, he has never spelt it out, though every time a film of his opens, the social saviour he portrays pushes both politicians and his huge, huge number of fans into a guessing game.

His latest movie, Lingaa directed by KS Ravikumar, which hit theatres on Friday, is probably the most political of his recent works. Essaying two characters (father and grandson, living in two different periods), who unfortunately look so much alike, Rajinikanth, on the one hand, is a civil engineer (with a British degree), a civil servant as well as a maharaja of a small southern principality - and on the other, a petty thief.

It is 1939, and the British are a harassed lot. The war in Europe and the growing movement for freedom in India under Gandhi are driving them nuts, and social welfare is the last thing on their mind. When the people of a parched land (who stop passing trains to collect water from the steam engines) ask for a dam to harness a river that will end both flooding and famine, the British brush them aside.

But Raja Lingeswaran (Rajinikanth) steps in, and with the help of his own money and expertise as well the labour from the land raises the dam. But like so many good men, Lingeswaran is forced out of the village and the temple he built there locked for all time when a village traitor schemes with the British and fools the people.

Cut to the present day, and we see the Raja's grandson, Lingaa (also Rajinikanth), as a petty thief who picks jewels off people's necks. Contrasting with this degeneration is the village, which has realised its folly and is bent on getting Lingaa back if only to reopen the temple, whose deity, Shiva Lingam, is worth a fortune. Lingaa arrives all right, but as a thief with an eye on the stone - and at a time when corrupt Indian politicians have replaced the British. One of them wants to destroy the same dam that the Raja built to last a thousand years, and Lingaa's change of heart and subsequent confrontation with the politician gets us a liberal dose of Rajinikanth's daredevilry -- interspersed as it is with an irritating number of songs and dances, some in dream sequences! AR Rahman's music does not help either to stop Lingaa from stumbling on its plot track.

Although, Lingaa arguably is one the better films of Rajinikanth in a long time, the actor remains a slave to his trademark mannerisms - which do not allow him to sink into the character. Here he does not flick a cigarette in the air (that will be politically incorrect now, will it not be?), but twirls his hair and moustache. And there is hardly a difference between Raja Lingeswaran and Lingaa.

And both Sonakshi Sinha, who abandons her home and village to be with the Raja as he is banished, and Anushka Shetty as a television anchor-girlfriend of Lingaa are characters on the periphery. Naturally, with a superstar like Rajinikanth in frame after frame, the others around shrink into inconsequential specks. Though Ravi Kumar appears to have taken pains to ensure that many of Sinha's shots are not close-ups, it will be apparent to any Tamil that her lip sync is far from perfect. The pitfall of doing a movie whose language is absolutely unfamiliar.

Santhanam remains the hero's (Lingaa) sidekick, portraying the same character for the zillionth time. But, yes, Radha Ravi (whose father, MR, Radha, was a great screen villain) in a small role - as the father of Sinha's Bharathi - caught one's eye.

Fans set the box office on fire around the world, not just Mumbai.

Apparently, Superstar Rajinikant wanted to release 'Lingaa' on Diwali. So fans pushed their Diwali to the release date, also his 64th birthday, and set the box office on fire around the world, not just Mumbai.

After a sleepless night following overwhelmingly positive Twitter buzz and reports from the late night shows around the world, many headed towards the single screen Aurora cinema in Matunga, headquarters for Rajinikanth fans for fireworks, nadaswaram accompanied festivities and larger than life cutouts of their “thalaivar.”

Late night reports from Rentrak, Hollywood’s tracking agency, revealed that director K.S. Ravikumar’s Lingaa had beaten popular franchise Hunger Games 2 at the US box office by grossing $206850 from just 91 screens compared to the $190000 the Jennifer Lawrence film collected from 1583 screens.

Encouraged by this opening, this reporter made his way to Fun Cinemas in Chembur which was the first among the 70 screens in Mumbai to open its ticket counters in advance for Lingaa to find a full house screaming their lungs out as the words 'Super Star' appeared on screen.

The screams continued all through the introduction shot – boots stepping out of a stretch limo, followed by the trademark swagger in slow-mo as Superstar burst into a jig for S.P.Balasubramaniam rendered-A.R. Rahman composed ‘Oh Nanba.’

Unlike Chennai where the audience drowns the punch dialogues with applause and screams, the multiplex audience in Mumbai saved up their energy for the action scenes and were quickly sucked into the social period drama about a King who resigns his job as a Collector under the British rule to build a dam on his own to save the flood and famine-hit villages in his province.

Punchlines

The template Rajinikanth film had all the familiar tropes – a present day narrative in contrast to a glorious past, a betrayal, personal loss and redemption played by familiar faces and lots of punchlines that once again teased the crowd about his political ambitions.

But the most politically loaded line came when he picks up the megaphone and announces to his caste and religion-divided striking workers to not come to work if they believed in their caste or religious identity.

Only Indian blood

“I don’t want people of this caste or that religion to come to work. Only those who have Indian blood flowing in their veins and believe they are Indians first may return to work,” he declares his brand of “gharwapsi” and had the audience applaud instantly.

The Superstar was reuniting with his old friend K.S. Ravikumar after a gap of 15 years and returning to do live action after four years, after being hospitalised in a critical condition for months in 2011.

It was largely feared that he may never act again. But going by the veteran superstar’s agility on screen and the response off screen, there’s nothing to stop him from beating his own box office records.

The king is back on his throne.

Cast: Rajinikanth, Anushka Shetty and Sonakshi Sinha

Direction: K.S. Ravikumar

Music: A.R. Rahman

Genre: Social drama

The arrival of a Rajinikanth film is like a festival. Hardcore fans expect a whistle-clap fest and even serious film buffs look past gaping loopholes in the script and soak in inimitable fun. K.S. Ravikumar, who directed Muthu and Padaiyappa (Narasimha in Telugu), aims to draw more than claps and whistles. He puts Rajinikanth in the centre of a social, period drama set in 1939 and offers some interesting view points.

The first one hour rolls by with some fun, as Lingaa (Rajinikanth) and his motley gang of friends that include Santhanam and Karunakaran are involved in petty thefts. Lakshmi (Anushka Shetty) is a television reporter who at first cajoles and later arm twists Lingaa into coming to Singanoor village, where a dam and a Shiva temple stand as proud reminders to the work done by Lingaa’s grandfather, Lingeshwara.

When the film slips into flashback mode, flaky fun takes a backseat and we are introduced to Lingeshwaraa (Rajinikanth), a Cambridge educated civil engineer, now posted as collector of Kurnool. He makes it clear that while Gandhi follows a non-violent path and Subhash Chandra Bose the armed method of fighting against the British, he is trying to implement welfare schemes for people by being part of the administration. This segment opens with a neatly choreographed stunt sequence on the train, has its share of stylish sunglasses and vintage cars but Ravikumar wants the audience to focus on the story of a Samaritan than the superfluities.

Lingeshwara wants to build a dam to benefit drought-stricken villages. When faced with a stumbling block, he reveals his true identity — Maharaja of Gadwal — and constructs the dam with his own money and puts his engineering skills to use. A huge supporting cast, from Radha Ravi to Nizalgal Ravi, Manobala to Vijay Kumar, come into the picture. Sonakshi Sinha is endearing as Bharati, the spirited young woman who is the most educated in the village — she studied up to standard IV!

As you soak in the period drama, relishing the little flourishes that establish the mood of the early 1940s, you realise it is not without errors. Rajinikanth is shown reading Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1939, whereas the book was first published in 1949.

The director narrates a tale of deceit, human spirit and triumph. The merits of the period drama come undone when the director, in a bid to emphasise the good nature of his hero, prolongs the flashback. It’s a template we’ve seen before, where Rajinikanth is maligned before getting his due.

Having spent far too much time in the 1940s, Lingaa returns to the present and hurtles towards a rushed end. The dam is now a political tool in the hands of Jagapati Babu. The climax is a huge disappointment. Suspension of disbelief in a Rajinikanth film is fun when the stunt packs in enough thrills. Here, mediocre visual effects play spoilsport.

Lingaa’s memorable moments lie in the social drama and the camaraderie between Rajinikanth and Santhanam. And there’s A.R. Rahman who makes a song with words like ‘Mona Gasolina’ sound edgy and good. Rathnavelu’s cinematography works in favour of the film. Though the romance between Rajinikanth and Anushka is flimsy, Anushka is appealing.

Lingaa is worth the watch for Rajinikanth but falls midway between being a gripping social drama and a full throttle entertainer. There are a few punchlines to take away too, for instance Rajinikanth says ‘I have not failed; I have only postponed my success’.

Bottom line: Thalaivaa doesn’t disappoint

Just came back from watching Lingaa.. Friday 10 PM show.. Cary, NC. Theater was almost full with majority family audience.. Thalaivar is real crowd puller.. we can expect all box office records broken by Monday..

Regarding the movie.. I liked it except for the climax.. climax is a big joke.. other than that the movie is engaging, thalaivar's presence and santhanam's one liner really helped.. music is average..

Overall satisfied with Lingaa outing..

satisfied with the movie.... after all the comments, I dint mind the climax either - haven't we seen worse ??!! The first half could have been crisper. Anushka is getting old :(

I liked Sonakshi's role - had more dignity ( thalaivar did look a bit uncomfortable in the duet with her ) and the flashback did bring tears when it ought to :) Loved Raja Lingeshwaran part a lot...!!! Indianae vaa was apt and picturised well :)

I hope and pray someone will be creative enough to do a good script for our Superstar - I'd love to see him in an offbeat role for once :)

Watched the movie last night and posted my review here but not sure why it is not showing up. Anyways, i fall under the majority who will say that this is a total rajni show, the story was Ok but the screenplay was poor. One minute rajni is collecter, then king, then poor they wanted to show everything but in the end ksr threw his previous movie cliches.

Climax was a big let down. I am still hurt by vj jump scene in kuruvi and this jump onto ballon beats it, hands down.

After 2 hrs I realized that she was there to book tickets for Friday night show and I asked her why can't you book it in GV through online. She replied happily that she is big fan of Thalaivar and want to see the movie with her friends and all fans to get the that Feeling which they can't get in multiplexes. And I met the boy again in Food court after booking the tickets, he is a ardent Vijay fan and inspired by Thlaivar. He was non stop and keep on talking how he got inspired by Thalaivar, his speech in movies and real life, especially 'Un Valzkai Un Kaiyi and he was saying that particular dialogue was the reason for his successful career .

Oh, another fan from Singapore! I caught it today, at City Square Mall. Cinema was about half full but that didn't stop the shouts and claps for the title tag and intro.

The movie itself was a pale shadow of previous KSR-Rajini combos. KSR used the tried and tested template which worked to some effect. SS was brilliant, especially during the flashback sequences which incidentally was my favourite part of the film. Comedy was pretty routine but it was nice seeing KSR incorporating pop culture like Kasu Panam Duttu Money inside. Can't fault the sets and the cinematography. They were perfect. ARR shines in the BGM but the songs were nothing to shout about. The climax, well, you will have to watch the film for that atrocity.

Prior to watching it, I heard comments that this was Rajini's Sura/Aalwar. The movie wasn't that bad, really, but if you're expecting a movie in the range of Muthu/Padayappa, be prepared to be disappointed.

Just came back from the movie
It is a pretty decent entertainer to me though not on the level of padayappa/basha. I am completely impressed with ‘Raja Lingeswaran’s’ characterization. It is completely realistic for the most part with no overdone heroism anywhere but still thalaivar exhibited his dynamism. He is shown a person with Indian noble values like sacrifice, integrity, honesty, courage, fearlessness, greatness, magnanimity spiritual mindset etc., Personally, we can take a lot of learnings from this character. I have a strong belief that lingeswaran will add to his memorable characters. I liked sundarajan’s characterization and acting as well. It exactly fitted the movie. Even the british villan was more realistic. It was really a great feel to see Superstar in screen completely energetic and healthy with the same speed, dialogue delivery & style. Anushka is super hot and sonakshi coo to. Santhanam is rally good with his one liners. As many reviews said, definitely KSR needs to be given credit for completing this humongous task in 6 months. Randy and sabusyril needs special appreciation too.

Having said all these, still the movie has it’s own demerits
1.Few of the actors have been wasted. To name a few; karunakaran, Dev Gill, Jagapathy Babu.
2.In the first half, we get a feel that; three stories are being told parallel. We have a thief episode, then some episode relating to dam and finally the flashback but none of the episodes evoke a strong suspense or curiosity. This certainly causes discomfort. KSR should take responsibility for poor writing.
3.One strong expectation for thalaivar movies is the confrontation with villan. We have seen raghuvaran in baasha, arunachalam. Radharavi in Muthu, Ramya Krishnan is padayappa, Suman in Sivaji. But here we totally lack such confronation scenes.
4.There is not a even a single scene to show the mass effect or buildup of thalaivar. Instead of a poorly conceived climax, any scene where thalaivar with his sheer people support takes on powerful jagapathy’s babu’s political machinery would have raised the movie by several notches.
5.It is hard to believe that Rahman as the MD of this movie. Hardly there is no stand out BGM’s. Even baba had few. Songs too are average

Overall, the movie is truly an entertainer. No one will regret watching it and I felt entertained for most part of the movie. You expect a delicious meal, 50 % of what you expected is served. 25 % is not good as expected and rest 25 % what you expect has not been served.

I think KSR has lost his touch. All his recent movies are a clear example. Thalaivar should stay away from him in the future. KSR still deserves respect for having played a major role in building the brand Rajini.

Lingaa - dam lengthy.

Watch this movie for Rajini and A R Rahman only, so I did. Partially ok movie, but definately not worst movie. Climax scene is so....I think KSR and his associate directors discussed how can we make a climax like never before, never mind if its unrealistic.... Those scenes in climax reminds of Balakrishna's telugu movie, I think he made a train go reverse just by staring at it in one scene.

what is good:
Rajini in flashback
Sonakshi Sinha
A R Rahmans BGM and Indiane Vaa song

What is bad:
Worst intro song for Rajini
KSR direction
Screenplay
Lenghth of the movie
scenes with huge crowd in almost each 2nd scene
and they blindly standing and looking in awe almost each time
weakest villains (inspired by Hari movies?)
comedy
editing (could have trimmed the movie a lot)

Lingaa 2nd Day Collection in Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka
By Neeraj Dumka | December 13, 2014

Rajinikanth’s Lingaa has broken all the records set by other south Indian movies. As per reports, Lingaa has now not only become the best movie of 2014 in Tamil Nadu but also became best opener of all time. On it opening two days, Lingaa has collected approx 25 crores in the Tamil Nadu states only. The collection for the movie on Friday was around 13 and early reports are indicating a collection around 12 crores on Saturday too. Remember that Lingaa is released in only 750 screens in the state. So a massive collection for this masala entertainer in Rajinikanth’s own state. Take a look at the Saturday box office collection reports of Lingaa in other states like Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and rest of India as well as worldwide.

Lingaa 2nd day collection
Lingaa 2nd Day Collection - Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka

Rajinikanth, Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty starer Lingaa was released this Friday in 600 screens in Tamil Nadu, 750 in Andhra Pradesh, 215 in Kerala, 150 in Karnataka, 400 in North India and 1000 in overseas. The first day collection of Lingaa was the best collection which any movie get in Tamil Nadu. Before that “Kaththi” staring Vijay was at the number 1 position. Released early this year, “Kaththi” had collected 12.50 crores on opening day of release.

Not only movie has collected big numbers in Tamil Nadu, the collection figures in Andhra and Telangana are pretty impressive. In the first two days, Lingaa has collected approx 11 crores in Andhra and Telangana. The two day’s collection in these areas breaks 6 crores on Friday and 5 crores on Saturday. These are very impressive numbers because movie is released in a non holiday weekend. In the other states like Kerala and Karnataka, Lingaa has collected more than 6 crores in first two days. Overall, great performance by this most awaited movie of 2014 in southern film industry.

The worldwide collection of 2 days for Lingaa is currently not available but early trends are suggesting a collection around 55 crores in first two days on more than 3,000 screens worldwide.

Once again I am saying its bad, you need to understand we defined the concept of "Commercial Tamil Cinema". When we defy the very rule we established to term a movie as a "good entertainer" (Which is what people expect from Thalaivar movies), it only gives others something to jab about.
This is over as far as I am concerned, I hope thalaivar doesn't rush make another movie.

I seriously want him to act in a dark subject with less of dancing, playing with chemistry subject for chewing on cameras etc his chewing days are long over. More importantly work with a new director with fresh set of ideas.

Watched night show at Luxe. Almost all screens show Lingaa there.

Movie as a whole was ok only. A good story spoilt by poor screenplay. That was surprising from KSR, who made a three hour Padayappa look like a normal length movie. He is in awfully bad form these days. A good editor could've helped too. KSR normally uses a little known Thanikachalam for his movies. But if I am not wrong, this film has a different editor.

Rajni looked convincing as Raja Lingeshwaran but not very apt for the happy go Lingaa. While few reviewers felt that the flashback was lengthy, I felt only the flashback had some life in it. The emotional scenes post interval worked for me. But the manner in which story writer connected the dots between the present and history is nothing but a lesson for wannabe directors on how not to write a story. Also KSR also made some unintentional comedies like Vijayakumar playing the role of Naattaamai for the 97th time in his career, the kid's face turning into K Vishwanath, the whole supporting cast crying while eating a meal, etc. Climax was the pinnacle. :)

Both heroines had a reasonable role to play unlike other mass hero movies were they just romance the heroes and sing/dance for duets. And both have done a good job.

One major plus was Rathnavelu's cinematography. Terrific!!

I already started liking the songs before the release. But the song placement after interval was really bad. 3 songs in a span of 15 min. Also for someone who complimented Endhiran, Sivaji or Padayappa with his rocking bgm, this score was a huge letdown. He didn't get many opportunities to rock but whatever he got, he didn't make use of it.

Rajni has set the bar high in BO with Endhiran and Sivaji. Now he himself will find it difficult to surpass them. So he should not allow external factors like health or timeline to dictate his film's release. I still believe if KSR was not restricted to a timeline, he would've come with a far superior product.

When I paid 100 danish kroner= 1045 indian rupees to watch the movie in theatre, I expected something better than the outcome, I think KSR has let many down. He solely depended on superstars charisma.

I think, the expectations are too high.

That's why Manirathnam is not able to satisfy his fans.

It is hard for KSR too!

They do try that but they fail. It is not that they want to let you or themselves down!

Terrific!!

Your review goes along with MOST- including most of the critics. :)

One thing about BO..

We dont have Shankar here and so, usual two-year delay and accumulated interest for the investment they made need to be eliminated. They recover their investment quickly and so even if they make 30% less they get the same profit. :)

Review: Lingaa is buffoonery at its most old-school
http://www.rediff.com/movies/review/review-lingaa-is-buffoonery-at-its-most-old-school/20141212.htm

Lingaa can get tiresome, especially with the too-long fight scenes, but remains constantly watchable because of the miraculously light way in which Rajinikanth continues to wear his megastardom around him, says Raja Sen.

You can tell just how vintage a film aspires to be by the films it steals from.

KS Ravikumar's Lingaa may be set in today for the most part. But as an opening heist -- borrowed moronically yet loyally from Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn's How To Steal A Million -- shows us, here is a new film that would prefer to rip off a 1966 comedy instead of one of these modern English movies. Simply because nothing out there today quite has the understated charm of old Hollywood.

That includes Rajinikanth.

Sure, that most iconic of our leading men is anything but understated, but watching him in action shows us not just the most old-school of swaggers but also a self-assured coolth missing from most heroes anywhere today.

Rajini's heroism comes with a grace that makes all the stereotyping bearable, he is always smilingly in on the gag -- the biggest punchline being that he's a parody of himself -- rather than an actor taking his screen image too seriously.

That said, Lingaa is a deliriously scripted film about Lingaa, a present-day thief (and engineer of Willism Wyler saluting heists, as mentioned) who enchants a young, hefty television news anchor to the point of pirate-fetishising dreams.

The song as the girl dreams of him is particularly priceless, with glorious subtitles reading (from him to her) "Mona, my catalyst gasoline darling" and her replying, as she invitingly unbuttons her blouse, "Your Mona is like Fort Knox treasury; shall I open so coins you can carry?"

It's all magnificent, stirring stuff, and Benny Lava ain't got nothing on these romantics.

But the cops are after Lingaa -- whose face is magically devoid of a single crease but whose hands often appear gnarled -- and he begins ducking from the cops while his sidekick brilliantly questions him, "Why hide like you saw your father in a wine shop?"

Like I said, old-school.

Soon enough, Lingaa and his gang (plus the smitten TV anchor) decide to hotfoot it to a small village where Lingaa's grandfather, Lingeswaran, was king.

Now, in keeping with saluting the vintage, this is the real dude, a highly educated Indian ruler who was so smart he read Joseph Cambell's The Hero With A Thousand Faces 10 years before it was written.

Now this original Lingaa is the true leading man, even though he falls for the most unteenagerly teenager of all, played by the younger, heftier Sonakshi Sinha, playing up her bovine ways in a desperate attempt to appear doe-like.

It's not a great move, but everything is worth watching Rajinikanth grin slyly as he says "naughty girl."

Plot-wise, Lingaa has a lot of meat, particularly the 1939 flashback wherein grandpa Rajini gets the better of our British overlords with impressive nonchalance and dignity, even as director KS Ravikumar amps up the film's giant scale with hundreds of extras and lavish sets.

It's a compelling watch of a man with unquestioned nobility falling from grace but never once doing what is less than ideal -- even if Sinha invitingly sings "from basics to base 4, let's have an encore," making her intentions rather clear. (I'd say naughty girl but what's the use when you can't say it the way Rajini can?)

The hero does it all, from obliterating caste barriers to daintily feeding British governors cake to frying up appalams for unannounced guests.

At 175 minutes, Lingaa can get tiresome, especially with the too-long fight scenes, but remains constantly watchable because of the miraculously light way in which Rajinikanth continues to wear his megastardom around him, like a chiffon cloak.

In it's own way the film tries to be progressive and forward-thinking, but this isn't about that. It's about a man who brings pleasure to his people. Much like its ridiculous hot-air balloon climax, then, Lingaa is a gas.
