Like father, like son

With both grandfather and father heartthrobs of their generations, Gautham Karthik has a tough act to follow. With four films in the bag, he talks to Udhav Naig about keeping up the family name

Gautham Karthik’s Poes Garden office is a quaint place. Built according to the old Madras idea of luxury, everything in it is a bit from the past. Gautham is the third person from his family to occupy this office after father Karthik Muthuraman and grandfather R. Muthuraman. The office has a bit of history, as might be expected. The story goes that Gautham’s father and the 80s’ heartthrob Karthik was introduced to the press for the first time by his father Muthuraman, the popular 60s’ star, when making his film debut. When Gautham came in, it was widely expected that he would take Karthik’s place in the film industry but it hasn’t exactly gone according to script. Having spent most of his life away from Chennai and his family, Gautham shares little in common with his father and grandfather. For instance, he drives a Harley Davidson to work and speaks more in English than Tamil. But if one thing does connect them, it’s cinema.

Rising hopes
When film aficionados discovered that Karthik’s son was going to be launched in a Mani Ratnam film, they immediately expected that he would become an overnight star much like his father had become with Alaigal Oivathillai. But Kadal did not quite make the mark, and Gautham is not a star yet. Interestingly, though, Gautham is not prepared to write off the experience. “Everybody thought the film would be a big hit and I would become a star overnight. Unfortunately, it didn’t do as well as we expected although there are people who loved it. But I learnt a lot about the process of making a film. For instance, Rajeev Menon would talk to me in detail about camera angles, lenses and about how to light a frame. While I was dubbing for the film, Mani Ratnam would tell me how he was going to edit the film. In hindsight, I think I got a lot out of the film.”

And now, Gautham has signed on four films, indications that his career might yet take off dramatically. The four movies he has taken on (Yennamo Yedho, Vai Raja Vai, Sippai, Indrajith) are each in a different genre — romantic comedy, thriller, commercial pot-boiler and children’s film. Was this deliberate? “I want to do as many genres to figure out what I can and cannot do,” he says. Yet it’s clear that the expectation of becoming a heartthrob like his father still burns bright. His next release will be Yennamo Yedho, a remake of Telugu flick Ala Modalaindi. “It’s a romantic comedy,” he says.

It hasn't been easy to meet expectations. “I have often been asked to get more involved in love scenes but I find it difficult. Thanks to my father's reputation, I am expected to do more love stories. I always get told that ‘You have to do films like that and this’. Thankfully, my dad has asked me to do my own thing.” And surprisingly for a star kid, daddy does not seem to be interfering much. “I do take his inputs though.”

For now, the other three films are getting ready for release. “I am quite surprised at the pace at which these films are getting shot,” says the youngster. Ask him about his ‘big’ film, Vai Raja Vai, which is directed by Aishwarya Dhanush, and he says “It’s about a young graduate who gets pulled into a world of gambling and struggles to get out of it. It was tough to work with Aishwarya Dhanush. She is so sharp and alert to pick on the mistakes.”

Filmi roots
Does he identify at least partially with his father’s roots? “Only after coming to Chennai, I started to find out about my family and my father’s political activism.” He might have become an actor like his father but he is clear he wants nothing to do with politics. “As a son, I will support my dad in whatever he does, but I don’t want to get involved,” he says. As he prepares to leave for Bangalore on his motorcycle, he talks excitedly about Sippai, his first full-length commercial feature revolving around the violent clashes that unfolded at Law College. “I play a very upright student. It revolves around the incidents that happened a few years ago in Law College. This film will be a mass, masala film.”

Clearly, this is one son who wants to go one step further than the father.

One thing I can promise you is that that it’ll be very different from my first project, 3. I wanted to try something new after 3 and with Vai Raja Vai (VRV) I believe I have. I sincerely hope that I have met the expectation of the people. It’s an out and out commercial entertainer and an enjoyable one at that.

What makes Vai Raja Vai and 3 poles apart?

Firstly, my previous project, 3 was well received by all and I believe that I have been accepted as a director, who is capable of delivering quality films and people do expect something different from me. Me and my team have worked hard to meet that expectation.

Starting from the genre to the content and performances, Vai Raja Vai and 3 are polar opposites. While 3 was extremely intense and dark, VRV will be a racy commercial entertainer.

Vai Raja Vai will not be as performance oriented as 3. Never the less it will have some amazing performances.

I didn’t want to be stereotyped. Instead, I want to be known for my adaptability to different genres. That’s the reason behind coming up with something like Vai Raja Vai.

The cryptic first look posters and the new teaser…

First look posters are the first set of weapons set free with an intend to create curiosity among the people. I wanted to keep the audiences guessing. I think the posters have done its job well. Now it’s up to the teaser to do its job – to raise the expectation.

Do not expect the teaser to reveal the whole plot. That will remain a secret until the film releases. But, the teaser will give you a better idea of what to expect from the film.

The central characters…

Vai Raja Vai moves around a variety of very interesting characters. Gautham Karthik plays the protagonist and the whole story is about how his life turns around due to the situations he is put to. Priya Anand, Vivek sir, Daniel Balaji, Mano Bala, Gayathri Raghuram and others too play crucial parts in making the movie racy.

Madhan Karky..

Apart from the songs, Karky’s magical touch will also be present in the dialogues. His involvement in the dialogues department is one of the biggest assets of Vai Raja Vai. I in fact asked him if he could do a role in the film. But, he preferred to stick to his own department.

The locations…

Apart from Chennai, we have shot few important sequences in Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Goa. In Japan we canned a song.


What can we expect from Vai Raja Vai’s album?


The fact that 3 set a huge musical benchmark was a reason why I had to go with another composer. I didn’t want that to be a pressure on us. Also, rather than sticking to one person, I desire to work with a variety of talents. Yuvan’s also a good friend of mine and he is a very senior artiste, who knows cinema well.

Sachin Khedekar in Gautham Karthik's 'Indrajith'


The latest addition to Kala Prabhu's Gautham Karthik-starrer Indrajith is Sachin Khedekar. The seasoned actor, who has been part of Yaavarum Nalam and Maattrraan in Kollywood in the past, will be seen playing the role of a professor in this fantasy adventure.

Confirms Kala Prabhu, "Sachin's role is crucial to the film's plot, and we are glad he is onboard. He plays a professor who leads Gautham Karthik through his journey in the film." We hear the actor has already completed shooting one schedule for the film.
Meanwhile, the team recently completed a schedule in Goa, where a 12-day chase sequence was filmed.

Actor Sudhanshu Pandey, who returns to Tamil films with two big-ticket movies, on how spirituality and good human beings keep him motivated

After sending chills down one’s spine as the dreaded don Abbasi in Billa 2, the handsome Sudhanshu Pandey is back in two Tamil films — Meagamann and Indrajith. The actor says he’s delighted to be working in Tamil again. “I’ve always said that the films made here and the people making them are fantastic. I’m working with people who are extraordinarily humble, despite their status. It’s like a lesson in humility every single day,” says Sudhanshu, a deeply spiritual person in real life.

“Spirituality, religion, karma, God and good people. These are what motivate and inspire me to do better. This is why working in the South is a fascinating experience,” he adds.

In Magizh Thirumeni’s Meagamann and Kalaprabhu’s Indrajith, Sudhanshu dons roles that are off the beaten track. In Magizh’s film, he is a hard-core evil guy. “I’ve used prosthetics for the very first time in my films. It took two hours to put on the make-up. It’s been taxing, but these 15 days in my life have also been very challenging,” he says.

Indrajith, touted to be a fantasy-adventure, has Sudhanshu playing his normal suave and sophisticated self. “I play the director of ASI, who is perceived as grey,” is all he’ll say about it.

How easy is it for a god-fearing and good guy like him to play dark characters? “I think it is vital to understand good to play bad well. Thanks to my roles, I get to explore the limits of negativity, despite being a positive person,” he smiles. “But yes, it’s a terribly draining exercise. Strong emotions such as evil do not come naturally. It takes a lot of effort. For instance, my very first scene in Meagamann had me killing someone. It takes a toll on you.”

As for his fellow actors, Sudhanshu says that Gautam Karthik (Indrajith) is a “fantastic guy, untouched as of now by glamour. He’s a real chap, with no façade.” Arya, says the actor, “is fun to be with. Very cool and relaxed.”

Has not knowing the language posed a problem? “No. I think I’m very lucky. I can mouth dialogues with about 85 per cent pronunciation accuracy. In fact, I’m dubbing for Indrajith myself. But, what’s most important is getting the expressions right. I sit with the director and get the scene’s concept right.”

Considering he started his career in Hindi and with television, Sudhanshu is working on a few ideas, and is looking at reinventing himself there. He’s also shot for the first season of a television series for a soon-to-be-launched channel. “It’s based on The Twentieth Wife, a work by Indu Sundaresan,” he says, going on to emphasise that television will always remain his first love. “I worked with the stars there — Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Basu…. We were young, idealistic, full of ideas…it was fun. I’ve been spoilt thanks to that lovely first stint. Why settle for something less? Unless the content is stunning or the money so tempting that it forces me to ignore content, I’d be foolish to give up what I have.”

Gautham Karthik signs his next film

Actor Gautham Karthik, who has at least four other films in his kitty at the moment, has signed up for another big one. Sources close to the actor disclose that this time, he has been signed up for a film that is to be produced by director AR Murugadoss.

Says a source, "Gautham will play the lead in Rangoon, a film that is to be directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, one of Murugadoss's trusted associates who has worked with him in Thuppakki and 7aum Arivu. Gautham was clearly impressed with the director's abilities - especially the manner in which he persisted during a look test that he was asked to take. The film will have music by Anirudh."

When we got in touch with Periasamy, he confirmed the news, saying, "Yes, it is true. Murugadoss sir, who is known to provide opportunities to his associates, is producing my first film Rangoon as well. I am extremely thankful to him, and I consider him my mentor, for giving me this opportunity."

The director, who worked as an executive producer in a television channel before joining Murugadoss's team as an intern, refused to divulge any details of his film, saying, "It's too early to discuss." However, after some prodding, he said his film's story will be a fictionalised version — it will based on the real-life experiences of a 25-year-old person.

"For any person, the first 25 years of his life are a lesson. This film will be something to look forward to for Gautham. I chose him for my film as his look and age exactly fit the profile of the lead character of my script. The other members of the cast haven't been finalized as yet," says Rajkumar.

Sources say the team will begin work on the film next month. It will be ready for release by March, 2015.

'I was under Immense Pressure while Composing'

Vai Raja Vai is said to be a comeback movie for Yuvan in the Tamil film industry. Yuvan, who made his debut in Bollywood recently, addressed a vibrant crowd at the audio launch of Vai Raja Vai on Wednesday, saying, “I am extremely happy being part of the film. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Aishwarya at this point in time. It was a wonderful experience working with her. However, I must admit that I was under immense pressure while composing the music for the film, given the fact that Aishwarya had reposed a lot of faith in me.”

Yuvan added, “Pacha vanna poove, the first song in the movie came out really well, and that’s when I realised that it was not just that song, but all the songs are going to be a great success.”

Aishwarya said that she had spoken about the project and asked Yuvan to compose for the film, over an informal discussion. “And believe me, even before listening to the script, he readily agreed to work!” she said.

Gana Bala and Dhanush, who have been an integral part of the movie, also spoke on the occasion. While Gana Bala has sung a song in the film, Dhanush will be making a cameo appearance. He has written lyrics for a song as well. Dhanush, who was seen in his trademark veshti and sattai, said that it was a pleasure that the song written by him was sung by Ilayaraja sir. “I’m deeply honoured,” he said, as the crowd clapped and hooted. Vivek, who is also part of the movie, said, “The role I play in Vai Raja Vai is not just of a comedian. There is an element of suspense. You need to watch the movie to know about it.”

BENGALURU: Soon after its audio launch, Vai Raja Vai (VRV) climbed to the number one position on iTunes, giving its director Aishwarya R Dhanush every reason to smile. The trailer garnered 2.5 lakh hits in 100 hours. In a freewheeling chat with City Express, the very grounded and articulate daughter of Superstar Rajnikanth reveals she’s tried something new this time.

“VRV is a fast-paced commercial entertainer. It is not as serious and intense as my debut film, 3. I wanted to try something different this time. I feel that it is going to be something new for Tamil cinema as a whole,” Aishwarya says with a smile.

The film stars Gautham Karthik and Priya Anand. The director explains, “After watching Kadal, I felt there is potential in Gautham. So when I was scripting VRV, I thought of him. Priya and Gautham make for a simple duo that the audiences will relate to.”

However, she hadn’t really planned on making her second film so fast, she says. “I just happened to talk about my story to my friend Archana Kalpathi over coffee. She liked it and told her father about it and offered to produce the film!” she says with a grin.

So did she feel more pressure while directing the second time? “There’s always a pressure to deliver because of stalwarts like dad and Dhanush in the family. But I take it more as a responsibility to live up to expectations and keep up their good name. I use it as a driving force,” says Aishwarya.

Asked if she has discussed her script with them, she says, “We speak very little of work at home. But Dhanush knew my storyline. He’s a senior in the industry and a great guide to me, so his inputs are always helpful. He has been nice enough to do a cameo, which I was very excited to shoot.”

As for the superstar, Aishwarya says, “Appa knows the story too. I generally don’t discuss films with him and he feels that’s for the best too. He thinks his generation’s thinking is very different from ours. He believes in waiting for the final product.”

Shot in Goa on a luxury liner cruise and in Chennai, the film is nearing completion, with the re-recording in progress. Aishwarya is hoping to release it by end of January.

'Vai Raja Vai' is a pucca commercial film, says Aishwarya!

Aishwarya R Dhanush is ready with her second film Vai Raja Vai releasing on April 24. This soft spoken daughter of Superstar Rajinikanth and wife of Dhanush is a strong woman with a sparkling personality. There is something earthy and unpretentious about her and she is never afraid of challenges. In this conversation, probably the first-one on her new film Vai Raja Vai, she opens up to Sridevi Sreedhar

How important is the success of Vai Raja Vai to validate your worth as a film maker?

I know that everything is transitory in movies (Smiles). Now when I look back, my first film 3 was made with loads of support from my husband including his guidance and suggestions but Vai Raja Vai is not. For any film maker their second film is more crucial than the first one. It was a great responsibility for me this time around as my support system was missing. I stepped out of Dhanush’s shadow and this film is my baby. I have chosen a genre that is new to Tamil cinema. So this film is indeed very crucial to me and I’m eagerly looking forward to audience reaction.

What is Vai Raja Vai all about? Is it inspired by Ocean 12?

I must admit that I was inspired a bit, but VRV is different. Technically the film has come out well. It is a very commercial film which is not serious or intense like 3. VRV is a happy film intended at summer audiences with high production values, foot tapping music, good looking people, foreign locations, all adding gloss to the product. It is a multistarrer and has young actors like Gautham, Priya and Taapsee while seniors like Vivek sir, Vasanth sir and Mano Bala sir is there in supporting roles.

Dhanush is doing a cameo in the film. Please comment?

Yes he is coming as Kokki Kumar one of my favourite characters he played on screen. I am glad that I could bring Kokki Kumar back on screen and it is a quirky, out-of-the-box role for him. (Pauses) I guess you should see him on screen rather than me speaking about it.

When is the release?

Film is getting ready. Yuvan has completed the RR and we will be sending for censor this week and the first copy will be ready by end of this week. My producer is looking for an April 24 release and if all goes well, we are sure to make it to the theaters on the announced date.

The songs of Yuvan in Vai Raja Vai is a hit. Don’t you think that three month gap between the audio release and film release is too long?
It was a conscious decision to give that three month gap, as Yuvan wanted the songs to have recall value.

AGS Entertainments last movie Anegan with Dhanush was a hit and how are they planning the marketing?

I couldn’t ask for a better producer than AGS Entertainments who stood by me throughout. VRV was a very difficult film to make. We had so many big and small artistes and to get all their dates at the same time was not easy. We started the film two years back, but shot only for 56 days. As a team we celebrated 2 Pongal, 2 Diwali’s and two birthdays each (Laughs) but I should say that the team was so supportive of each other and I am sure they will now see that the film is marketed well and gets a good release.

Tell us a bit more about your artists?

I must say that it was easy to work with my lead actors Gautham Karthik, Priya Anand and Taapsee who are all one-take artists. Gautham has this infectious energy and his positivity can lift your spirits instantaneously. He is a live wire who never sits in one place. The support that I got from Vivek sir is tremendous while Priya and Taapsee were warm and friendly. Daniel Balaji, Mano Bala sir, Sathish, Mayilsamy the list is huge (smiles).

RANGOON film Music Director is Vikram RH

Vikram RH is another promising composer who is ready to take the industry by storm with the upcoming Gautham Karthik starrer Rangoon, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and co-produced by Fox Star Studios and A.R.Murugadoss. Rangoon is a fictional bio-pic about a person's life changing experiences and adventures during his 20s. Sana Makbul plays the female lead and she plays a singer in the film.

Vikram has assisted G.V.Prakash for about 3 years as a keyboard player and programmer. Before being signed on for the film, Vikram supposedly impressed A.R.Murugadoss with his tunes for 3 demo tracks and all these tracks will actually be used in the film too. In particular, a kuthu track and the opening song have been raved about by the ace director. Vikram feels that Murugadoss is a very down to earth and encouraging human being despite reaching great heights.

Rangoon would feature 8 songs in its CD while there would be an additional 5 songs in the movie's RR due to the film's musical approach to its screenplay. The composing of 7 songs is done apparently and relatively new singers would be used.

Vikram also has a strong grounding in the band scene and he is a part of the prominent band Staccato which represented India at the World Freestyle Percussion Event in Brazil, 2011 and the London Olympics in 2012. He guarantees a diverse album with Rangoon which is set for release in August this year.

நான் படிச்சது வளர்ந்தது எல்லாமே ஊட்டிலதான். அப்பாவோட நல்லா பழக முடியலை. சென்னை வந்தப்போ 'கடல்' பட ஷூட்டிங். கடல் முடியுற வரைக்கும் அப்பாவோட நேரம் ஒதுக்கவே முடியலை. ஆனா நான் பண்ணுற சில விஷயம் எல்லாம் அப்படியே உங்க அப்பா பண்ணுற மாதிரியே பண்ணுறனு மணி சார் அடிக்கடி சொல்லுவார். எனக்கே ஆச்சரியமா இருக்கும். இப்போதான் அப்பாவோட ரொம்ப க்ளோஸா பழகுறேன். அட... அப்பாவை மாதிரிதானே பையனும் இருப்பான்.

பெரிய ஹீரோவோட பையனா சினிமாவில் நடிப்பது ப்ளஸ்ஸா மைனஸா?

கண்டிப்பா ப்ளஸ்தான். பார்க்கும்போதே ஹீரோவாதான் பார்ப்பாங்க. அதுக்கு ஏத்தமாதிரி நாமளும் கஷ்டப்பட்டு உழைச்சாலே போதும், சக்ஸஸ் நமக்குத்தான். அப்பா பெயரைக் கெடுக்காம இருந்தாலே போதும்.

வை ராஜா வை படத்தில் நடிக்கக் காரணம் ?

கதைதான் முக்கிய காரணம். ஐஸ்வர்யா அக்கா என்கிட்ட கதையை சொல்லும்போதே, 'கதை வித்தியாசமா இருக்கே. இந்தப் படத்தை ஆடியன்ஸ் ஏத்துப்பாங்களா'னு கேட்டேன். எனக்கே டவுட்டாதான் இருந்துச்சி. ஆனா, ஷூட்டிங் போக போக எனக்கே நம்பிக்கை வந்துருச்சி. நான் நினைச்ச மாதிரியே படமும் சூப்பரா வந்திருக்கு.

'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம் பார்ட் 2' நீங்க நடிப்பீங்களா?

'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம் பார்ட் 2'-க்கு நிறைய பேர் கதை செல்லுறாங்க. ஆனா 'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம்' படம்னாலே எங்க அப்பாதான். அதை மாத்திடக் கூடாது. ஆனா, கண்டிப்பா விக்ரம் பிரபுவும் நானும் ஒரு படம் நடிப்போம். அது 'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம்' இரண்டாம் பாகம்லாம் கிடையாது.

நீங்க நடிச்சதுல, நடிச்சிட்டு இருக்குறதுல உங்களுக்குப் பிடித்த கதாபாத்திரம் எது?

'கடல்' படத்துல நடிச்ச தாமஸ் கதாபாத்திரம்தான் என்னோட ஆல் டைம் ஃபேவரைட். தாமஸ்ஸோட நான் வாழ்ந்துட்டேன். அந்த கடல், நான் நடிச்ச சீன் எதையுமே என்னால மறக்க முடியாது.

நீங்க படம் முடிவு செய்வதில் அப்பாவின் தலையீடு இருக்குமா?

அப்பா கதையைக் கேப்பாரு. எனக்கு டவுட்னாலும் அப்பாகிட்டதான் கேப்பேன். ஆனா, அவரு என்னோட முடிவில் தலையிட்டது கிடையாது.

அப்பா நடிச்ச படங்களில் உங்களுக்குப் பிடித்தது?

'உள்ளத்தை அள்ளித்தா' படத்தை மட்டும் 200 முறையாவது பார்த்திருப்பேன். என்னை சிரிக்கவும், அழவும் வைச்சப் படம் அதுதான்.

உங்களைப் பற்றி நீங்களே ஒரு கிசுகிசு சொல்லுங்களேன்?

நைட் 4 மணிக்கு உங்க தூக்கத்தை கெடுக்க மாதிரி சத்தம் கேக்குதுனா, அதுக்குக் காரணம் நானாதான் இருப்பேன். எனக்கு பைக் ஓட்டுறதுனா அவ்வளவு பிடிக்கும். நைட்டுதான் அதிகமா வண்டி ஓட்டுவேன்.

'ஒரு ரைடு போகலாம் வாரீங்களா?' என்று சிரித்துக்கொண்டே பைக்கை ஸ்டார் செய்தார் கெளதம் கார்த்திக்.

Aishu and Yuvan are the real heroes:Gautham Karthik #VaiRajaVai


It is not easy to walk under the giant's shadow. Being son of veteran actor Karthik, Gautham's career has been scrutinised with a microscope, ever since he made his debut with Mani Ratnam's Kadal. This young man is outspoken and super charged up as we met him at the Vai Raja Vai press meet. Excerpts of a chat with the cool player…


A serious role in Kadal and then an energetic character in Yennamo Aedho. Now, what kind of role do you have in Vai Raja Vai?

Again, here too I’m playing a serious role but not too serious (Laughs). In Vai Raja Vai, my character is a very normal middle class guy from IT backdrop and I’d say the characterization is very realistic. Unlike my previous movies, here my body language has to be polished as the character is an IT professional.


How Vai Raja Vai offer came to you?

I think while writing the script itself Aishwarya had me in her mind and she wanted someone fresh for the script, luckily she saw Kadal and thus the offer came to me.

The trailer was fantabulous and you looked confident…

Thank you! All credits to Aishwarya, I exactly did what she told me. Hopefully, I’ve justified the character she had in mind…

About your director Aishwarya Dhanush…

Aishu is a brilliant director and I think, you can close your eyes and believe her. One rare quality I’ve seen on Aishu is that she takes control of the entire set and makes every possible effort to improve the quality of the film—I’d say it’s an absolute honor to work with such a promising director.

Also, I think from time to time she needs to laugh a little more so I end up cracking jokes to make her laugh, that’s my goal every day (laughs).

About the two pretty girls, Taapsee and Priya Anand…

I think Priya is an amazing actress and she has an eye for detailing in every frame where she is present. Behind the camera, Priya is a huge prankster and always makes everyone laugh and I think that’s a very positive quality of her.

In the film, we (Gautham and Priya) are established as couples so we don’t actually have any romantic track. The movie is all about how these couple separates and comes back, how everything happens around their characters.

Taapsee agreed to play a very different role in the film for which we are really grateful to her. Again, Taapsee is very dedicated and a thorough professional who mug up her lines well before the shoot and when the camera rolls, she exactly knows what has to be done…

Off late there are a few gossips about you… your take on them

Which one? I have a lot of gossips (mischievous smile)…

Tell us about everything…

I think link-ups with Priya are the funniest gossips I’ve ever read. It’s really funny because both of us are good friends, we used to have conversation like ‘Hey did you read the gossip?’ and have a good laugh.

During Kadal, they tried to link me with Thulasi as the film had a lip-lock but now it’s all gone. During Yennamo Aedho too they tried to establish some kind of gossip with Rakul Preet but for some reason they cut it off…Now I’m waiting for some gossips with Lakshmi Menon as we are acting together in Sippai…

What happened to Sippai? The trailer had some promising visuals…

It’s under production; once everything is ready we will be announcing the release date.

Any thoughtful advice from your dad Karthik …

He says be yourself, be natural and he has been telling this ever since Kadal. I’m just trying to follow his words…

Did he see Vai Raja Vai?

No actually he saw the trailer and told me that it is turning out to be a huge project and feels happy for me…

Your role model in the industry…

I think my dad is my role model. He got a unique style and I don’t think any other actor has got it, this is not coming from me as a son because I’m a huge fan of him as well. Also a lot of people tell me that I should be like my dad as he is super positive and a pleasant person to be with…

Apparently Dhanush played a cameo in Vai Raja Vai, how was the experience of working with him…

Actually he plays a character called Kokki Kumar in the film which is a character he played in Pudhupettai and I’m a huge of the film. Aishu too loves it and thus Dhanush came on board.

Dhanush has shot with us for five hours with us and he was very cool throughout. By the time he left, we all had that ‘Dhanush hangover’…

Did you watch the film?

Yes and I really loved it. The running time is just under 2 hrs which is a huge advantage and I’d say both Aishu and Yuvan Shankar Raja are the real heroes of the film, not me…

Gautham TOI Interview

His third film, Vai Raja Vai, directed by Aishwaryaa Dhanush, is all set to hit screens and Gautham Karthik sounds confident despite his previous two films not clicking at the box office. "I would like every movie of mine to become a hit. From the lowest technician to the biggest actor, we all put our heart and soul into every project and try to ensure that the film does well at the box office. But when a movie doesn't do well, it provides us an opportunity to analyze and learn from that experience," he says and adds, "Vai Raja Vai holds the same importance as every other movie I'm doing right now and those that I have done before."

He reveals that it was the concept of the film that attracted him most to the film. "It's something out of the box, which, Tamil cinema, nowadays, is reluctant to try," he says and elaborates, "It has everything we find in a commercial movie — action, romance, comedy and all of that — but apart from that, it also has many things that have not been shown in Tamil films for a while, like casino, gambling — all these are elements of the movie, delving into the human psychology... something to do with intuition."

Interestingly, Gautham's character in the film is named Karthik. So, was that decided after he was cast? "Actually, Aishwaryaa wanted everyone to have their own original names. Since I'd already used Gautham in another movie, I thought I'll go with my surname Karthik," he explains. Karthik is a middle-class boy working as an IT professional, and the situations he is put through and how he deals with them and how he comes out winning forms the gist of the story. The actor says that he has portrayed the character a little differently. "I've usually played very flamboyant characters; in my first movie, Kadal, I was a village guy who is extrovert, uncultured, very rough and raw, and in Yennamo Yetho, I was a chirpy youngster. But for this one, I had to be more polished, more city-based, and more controlled. So, the acting style is different," he says.

But there was not much of preparation that he had to do for the role. "I did have to learn how to play the game so that it didn't look fake. But apart from a 10-minute intro into the game, there was not much," he says. He says that shooting on a cruise was a lot of fun but they couldn't explore much due to time constraints. "We were shooting at different locations on the cruise all throughout, so there was no time to even breathe easy. But I think it is an experience everyone should have because a cruise is something amazing," he says.

The actor terms working with Aishwaryaa as fun. "A lot of people think Aishu is very serious but she is actually very fun-loving and enjoys a good laugh. I think I was the only one who made her laugh a little too much on the set," he laughs. That said, he adds that Aishwaryaa commanded the set completely. "She knows what she wants and if anything happens, it happens according to her will only. Aishu is a very dedicated director," he concludes.

Unlike in Bollywood, women filmmakers are scarce in Tamil cinema. In the past, female filmmakers were largely relegated to art-house movies and small budgets. But now, a few of them including Aishwarya Dhanush have cracked that K’town ceiling by succeeding where it mattered the most — the box-office. At a time when even star studded films take a beating at the BO, Aishwarya’s recent outing, Vai Raja Vai (VRV), has touched the 50 day mark and has grossed more than Rs 8.5 crores. As she shares her joy and future plans with DC, the daughter of Superstar Rajini says that big actors in K’town should come forward to work with female directors.

“I am extremely thankful to God for achieving such a milestone early in my career. It has given me confidence to think about mainstream cinema with more seriousness. It has also given me high to break the myth that ‘women directors don’t make it big in general’,” says a soft spoken, yet assertive Aishwarya. VRV’s success assumes a greater significance given that even K-town biggies are scrutinised and whipped at the box office. “I feel it’s a good start and I hope it would open up some avenues.

More producers ought to come forward and give women filmmakers a chance. Most importantly, if you look at Bollywood, superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan do not hesitate to work with women directors. I will strive to achieve such a trend and relationship here.” She quickly adds with a smile, “More so, the success was due to the fact that I was at the right place (AGS Entertainments) at the right time when I began Vai Raja Vai.”

Besides these, many more had to be done. Rangarajan of AGS reaffirms, “When Aishwarya presented the script we knew it had the potential for commercial cinema. The budget was minimal and the movie was short and crisp — well within the 2 hour runtime.” On the production and distribution tricks, Rangarajan quips, “Along with Studio Green we strategically released only in 180 screens. The film could sustain 120 screens in the second week and 82 in third. Uttama Villain’s delayed release also played a helping hand for the initial footfall, but the film’s content is what stabilised it and carried it all the way.”

Has she ever thought that VRV would make it so big? “When I started the movie, one thing that was constant in my mind was the idea that my producer should be benefitted. My script had the advantage of originality: no one can say that VRV was like any other movie. For that, I should thank today’s audiences who have become open-minded and receptive to experimental genres.”When asked what her hubby dear, Dhanush, says, she replies, “He is very contented and happy and proud of whatever little I have accomplished. At some level, everyone at home including appa and amma were surprised that I could pull it off so well. In fact appa was the first one to ask ‘what’s your next?’ That showed that he trusts my filmmaking capabilities.”

When asked about her next venture, she reveals, “I have three ideas with different genres. I want to take my steps carefully. It may take another six months for my next project. But as of now I am basking in the success of VRV. Ten years ago, reaching 100 days mark for films was easier. Today, the mere question is out of the picture. I would consider 50 days for VRV equivalent to 100 days for any film of yesteryear, and this fills me with a sense of achievement.”

Muthuramalingam is an upcoming film that is being produced by Global Media Works and directed by Rajadurai. This film becomes unique in the sense that it is the 1001st film that Ilayaraja will be scoring.

There is an interesting addition to the team of Muthuramalingam in the form of veteran Panchu Arunachalam who hops on board this film as a lyricist for all the songs in it. Interestingly, Panchu Arunachalam has worked with Ilayaraja in many films and the duo is coming together after 2006.

The film features Gautham Karthik, Catherine Tresa, Prabhu, Suman, Radha Ravi, Vivek, Sukanya, Rekha, Vamsi Krishna, Singam Puli, Singamuthu and others. UK Senthilkumar is the DoP.

Looking to Deliver Hope

It’s not often that you come across a Tamil film titled Rangoon. So, you’re naturally intrigued. The director of this film, Rajkumar, and his team have been so tight-lipped about this project until now that nobody had known anything about it, except for the fact that the film features Gautam Karthik (actor Karthik’s son) and Sana Maqbool, a new comer, in the lead roles.

Says Rajkumar with a smile, “My film is about the life experiences and journey of the protagonist, a guy in his mid-20s. I have not adopted a formulaic approach to this film. In other words, I have not made this in a conventional manner. My producers, Fox Star Studios and director AR Murugadoss have seen what I have shot and found it very interesting. They are all really happy that the concept is fresh and interesting.”

The title Rangoon might lead to many assumptions about the storyline, one of which is about the Tamils who migrated there. Is that the crux or theme of the film? “Not exactly,” says Rajkumar. “You will not find it throughout the film but I won’t say it is not there as well. There is a song by Na Muthukumar in the film that gives hope to all people who have travelled far away from their motherland.”
Stating that any youngster watching it will be able to relate, the director says Rangoon is all about giving hope. “We have tried not to convey sorrow but only hope. My film will stress on the fact that no matter how tough your journey is, there is always hope at the end of it,” he adds.

The unit, which did shooting in several places including Chennai, Pondicherry, Rangoon and in several South East Asian countries, wrapped up the shoot of the film on January 7.

“Actually, we had originally planned to wrap up shooting by October 31. However, incessant rains that started from November 1 last year delayed the process. As most portions of the film had to be shot on real locations, I had to wait for the water to drain. So, it took time. Now, we are in the post-production stage,” he explains.

Rajkumar, who has directed reality shows on Vijay TV for many years before joining director AR Murugadoss as his assistant director, says he was inspired to come up with this story by the characters he had met as a child.

“Some of the characters that I found interesting in my childhood inspired me to come up with this plot. However, the stories have been changed to make it more interesting to the audience,” says Rajkumar, and adds that he believes in the realistic portrayal of people’s lives.

Finally, ask him what the film’s message will be and he says, “For anybody, the experiences that they have when they are in the prime of their youth can actually help them in life. If one is smart enough, they will look to benefit from the experiences.”

Kamal Haasan sings for Gautham

The Ulaganayagan has lent his voice to Gautham Karthik for a song in the latter's film, Muthuramalingam, which is currently under production. The music is by Ilaiyaraaja. Says the film's director Rajadurai, "We wanted a fearless voice for the hero's introduction, which will feature both Gautham and his dad Karthik. Generally, we associate SPB's voice with such numbers, but Raaja sir opined that Kamal sir's voice might be perfect for this song. He himself called Kamal sir and requested him to record this song."

The song, Therku Desa Singamada, was recorded a week ago. "Kamal sir came to Raaja sir's studio and spoke with him for half an hour. He finished his portions in an hour," adds the director, who reveals that that the maestro has used live instruments for the song and had brought in around 300 folk musicians from down south for the recording. Incidentally, Ilaiyaraaja is teaming up with lyricist and writer Panchu Arunachalam, who introduced the maestro in Annakili, after 21 years.

Gautham Karthik plays a biker in his next film titled " 46 "

Gautham Karthik, who has been away from the limelight for a while now, has signed on a film titled, 46. It is said to be an action film directed by debutant Bala. "The story is about the illegal bike-racing that takes place in Chennai. The plot revolves around why a lot of youngsters get into racing, why they bet and how the public gets affected by these races. Gautham will be seen playing a biker in this one. The actress if yet to be finalised," says Bala who has been an associate director in movies like Velayudham, Jilla and Puli.

Talking about the title 46, he says, "We chose this title because it is the bike number of a famous Italian bike racer, Valentino Rossi. This number is very popular among illegal bike racers in the city, too." The music will be scored by Achu Rajamani.

As a star kid, the industry had set high standards for Gautham Karthik, who had a dream debut in the industry with Kadal, a Mani Ratnam film. But what followed were two films (Yennamo Yedho and Vai Raja Vai) that fared merely moderately at the box office. But the 26-yearold actor, has put the past behind him, and maintains that he has always been one to push his limits and experiment with his roles. Gautham Karthik has two films awaiting release -Indrajith, Rangoon and he's currently working on his third, Muthuramalingam. He is hopeful of having a good run at the BO this year. In a candid chat, Gautham speaks to us about his relationship status, upcoming films, his father Karthik, and more...
Why don't we get to see much of you on screen anymore?

I am constantly working. However, because of the quantity of films that are coming out, I guess a few films get pushed this way and that. Even after the acting bit is done, and the final product is given to the producers, a film can run into several problems. It is totally up to the producer as to how and when he wants to release his movies. Just like actors who plan their career graph, producers plan a chart for their production houses as well. As an actor, I can only finish my portions and give it to them. So the delay isn't on my part. I think I can use this time to my advantage and experiment with characters. It also gives me more time to work. I don't have any pressures as such because I'm always working.

You are rarely seen at events either...

I think I should change that. I love what I do in front of the camera, but I haven't really thought about being at events and being `seen'. I think I should change that. I guess bikers get to see me a lot more. As for CCL (Celebrity Cricket League), I am not a cricketer at all. I am a basketball and hockey player and I have never lifted the cricket bat other than to pose for a picture.

So, who are you currently seeing?

(Laughs) I'm single and totally available! Even though I am busy with work, I am still available, ladies!

Rumour has it that you were unwell and even underwent a surgery...

Not at all! I'm 26 and hale and healthy. I cycle every morning for about 20kms. I see Vivek sir from time to time during these trips.

Tell us a bit about your upcoming films...

Rangoon and Indrajith should be coming out soon. Both are completely done, are awaiting release.Rangoon is a different kind of a story. It is about a boy who is from Rangoon, who comes to Chennai to make a living. I had to learn Chennai slang for this one and my look is that of a dark-skinned person. It took me two hours to put on my makeup and four hours to get rid of it. I was the first one who came in to work, and the last one to leave. In Indrajith, I play a sim ple, down-to-earth character, who is brilliant. Indrajith is a boy who joins a team of researchers who are on a hunt. This one is an action-adventure film and, no, it is not inspired by a video game!

You play a rural character in Muthuramalingam, tell us about that...

I am currently working on this film. The first schedule is over and I am glad I have been able to do justice to my character, so far. The story is set in Madurai. The film is not based on Muthuramalingam Thevar. It is a story of a boy named Muthuramalingam -his trials and tribulations. I had to prepare myself a lot for this role -from my body language and stance to perfecting the Madurai slang, and learning Silambam.

Are you choosy about your characters?

At one point, I was working on Rangoon and Indrajith and Vai Raja Vai -I was handling three drastically different characters at the same time. It's simple. You don't carry your characters all over the place. You have to learn how to switch it on and off. I am slowly learning how to do that. My priority is to experiment with roles. I want to see how far I can go with a role and just...push my limits, you know? For instance, I would love to do a period film.After a few years, your audience may want to see you only in a certain kind of character, but now is the time for me to try something new. Look at Kamal sir, he is still experimenting.

Are you still being compared to your father, yesteryear hero Karthik?

People do compare us but I just keep going. Soon they will forget that. They will come to realise that I don't do things the way dad does it. He has his flavour, I have mine.I love it when my dad sits and tells me stories about the industry back then. Things were so different. It was one big family. But now, the family is way too big to be closely knit. My dad is my inspiration and I loved watching him in Anegan.
