What do you mean by non-festival or non-holiday in US? Can you clarify? Even Diwali is considered non-holiday in US.

I said it in general..I never pinpointed US ;) It includes all over....Ajith's film publicity is driven mainly by we fans rather than the promotions by the production house....

'Yennai Arindhaal': Factors Working in Favour of Ajith's Film at Box Office
Prakash Upadhyaya (http://www.ibtimes.co.in/reporters/prakash-upadhyaya) February 21, 2015 11:36 IST

Ajith's "Yennai Arindhaal" has emerged as an above-average hit at the box office by the end of the second week. The Tamil movie has earned more than ₹80 crore in its two-week run in theatres.

"Yennai Arindhaal" stars Ajith, Trisha, Arun Vijay and Anushka Shetty in key roles. It is produced by AM Rathnam and directed by Gautham Menon.
It's time now to take a look at factors that are working in favour of the Tamil movie at the box office.
Factor 1: The biggest factor for "Yennai Arindhaal" is the presence of Ajith. Had he not been featured in the movie, it would not have done good business at the box office. He is the biggest attraction in the Tamil film.
Factor 2: Gautham Menon has built his own fan base over the years with his classy films. The director's movies attract both the youth and multiplex audiences. This is the second big factor in pulling audiences to watch "Yennai Arindhaal".
Factor 3: While the masses have enjoyed the action quotient in "Yennai Arindhaal", others are impressed by its good storyline, which also has the sentimental angle of father-daughter relationship.

Factor 4: Trisha's role has been well-written and her chemistry with Ajith has worked big time in "Yennai Arindhaal". Their romantic scenes have impressed both the youth and family audience.
Factor 5: Arun Vijay has got a big break with "Yennai Arindhaal" as a baddie. Indeed, he completely steals the show in the second half. His fans are thronging theatres to watch their favourite star sharing screenspace with A-list star Ajith.
Factor 6: Harris Jayaraj's good music, backed with Dan Macarthur's brilliant cinematography is another reason that is working for the box office success of "Yennai Arindhaal".

“Yennai Arindhaal”… A first-rate Ajith movie

Spoilers ahead…
Before we begin to discuss Yennai Arindhaal as a Gautham Vasudev Menon film, we need to discuss it as an Ajith film – because he’s the elephant and you can’t get a proper look at the rest of the room without regarding him first. On the surface, this is very much a mass-hero movie, with Ajith playing a cop named Sathyadev. The opening-credits sequence is filled with macho imagery – a knife, sticks of dynamite, a gun, bullets, one of those stars that cops pin onto their uniforms. But there are no action sequences where villains are sent flying into the air, and the fights don’t slow down for masturbatory slo-mo frames. There’s a comedian in Vivek. But he’s kept in check. He makes an audience-rousing crack about Ajith’s salt-and-pepper look, but he isn’t given a separate comedy track. There are two heroines – software engineer Thenmozhi (Anushka), and a dancer named Hemanika (Trisha; the character seems to have been styled after Shobana, especially when she’s called “naatiya peroli,” which is what Shobana’s aunt Padmini was called). But there are no duets, and one of the meet-cutes involves vomit while the other one features a woman in labour. Both these heroines speak fluent English. But the hero does too, and he isn’t apologetic about it. In fact, he doesn’t seem to care much about the kind of things that our filmmakers think audiences in the B- and C-centres care about. When we first see Sathyadev, he’s flying Business Class.

You could point to Menon’s earlier cop films – Kaakha Kaakha and Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu – and say that those heroes did some of these things too. But Suriya was just starting out when he did Kaakha Kaakha. The “mass” image he has today, that wasn’t there then. He was just an actor. As for Kamal Haasan, well, he can get away with playing the tray in the hands of the stewardess in Business Class. We expect him to be different. But for Ajith, at this stage of his career, with his kind of following, to play Sathyadev this way – it’s a surprise. An exceedingly pleasant one. It’s a surprise that he’s made a movie where his virility is on display in his professional life but not in his personal life. I’m talking about the plot point that extends – rather, extrapolates on – the one in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu that had the hero, Raghavan, fall for a woman with a young daughter from a bad marriage. (The track in Yennai Arindhaal is a what-if riff, as in: What if the Jothika character died and left Raghavan to raise her daughter?) Like the Jothika character in that film, Hemanika worries if this man who wants to be her husband will also be a father to her daughter. But unlike Raghavan, Sathyadev promises that there won’t be any more children, even if means frequent trips to the medical shop. This is a joke about sex, and it’s tossed off so casually, I missed it when I first heard it – it took me a couple of seconds to realise what he was saying. This is no small thing. Think back to Yejamaan, for instance – the entire film revolved around the Rajinikanth character’s ability to father a child. Or even consider Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu. We are told that Raghavan’s wife was pregnant when she died. But this isn’t just an intimation of tragedy. This is also an indication that this cop wasn’t shooting blanks. There’s nothing like that in Yennai Arindhaal. I’m not saying that these considerations automatically make a good movie. I’m just saying that, given this star at this stage of his stardom, Yennai Arindhaal is practically Elippathayam.

Now to the Gautham Vasudev Menon film. By now, you’re either a fan of this director or you aren’t, and Yennai Arindhaal doesn’t try to make you change your mind. If you love his Ilayaraja worship, you’ll love the line that references Thaalattuthey vaanam. And if you hate Menon’s style of shooting songs where, within the same song, some of the lyrics are lip-synced while the others play over mood moments, you’ll find more to hate here. But even non-fans will see that Menon has evolved into a superb filmmaker. It isn’t just that the cinematography is terrific, with soft colours and the kind of texture that we rarely see in our big-hero films, where the cinematographer is mistaken for some kind of landscape artist and we applaud at shots of mountains and sunsets and flowers. The cinematography in Yennai Arindhaal is the kind we find in the films of only the very top tier of Tamil filmmakers – I’m not talking about the directors who deliver hits; I’m talking about the filmmakers. The fluidity of the filmmaking here is something to see. Actually, we shouldn’t be making a big deal about this at all. This is something we should be taking for granted, and in Hollywood, this would be taken as granted. But in the context of commercial Tamil cinema, it needs to be singled out.
There’s so much that’s so good in Yennai Arindhaal that I kept wanting it to be a better movie. I wanted it to be shorter. I wanted it to be less generic, especially towards the latter portions. I wanted villains (Ashish Vidyarthi, Arun Vijay) that this hero deserved. Arun Vijay (who plays Victor) has terrific presence – he’s looks like a character actor trapped in a leading man’s body – and towards the end, he conveys, thrillingly, not just danger but also desperation, but this is a good performance in search of a good role, the kind of role that Jeevan played in Kaakha Kaakha. He looked unhinged. There was no telling what he’d do. When you get that feeling from a villain, you begin to fear for the hero’s life. I didn’t feel that fear here. I wanted more to be done with the conceit that there’s a thin line between good and evil. It sounds grandly existential, but Sathyadev is so good and Victor so evil that the thin line is actually a chasm. I wanted to see more of Victor’s wife Lisa (Parvathy Nair). There are hints that she’s a fascinating character, and I wished a little more of the three-hour running time had been devoted to what she is, what she does. I wanted less déjà vu. I didn’t care to be reminded that the man-saving-a-friend’s-child angle here was something we’d seen in Vaaranam Aayiram. I wanted more surprise in the way Hemanika exits the story. The minute Sathyadev leaves her on the eve of their wedding, taking with him her daughter Isha, I knew she wouldn’t see the morning.

But I loved the way the aftermath of this tragedy is depicted, with Sathyadev breaking the news to Isha as she stares into the distance – only, he says Hemanika has “gone away.” We get the feeling that Isha knows he’s lying, that “gone away” is a euphemism for what’s really happened, but she just won’t admit it to herself… yet. And then we slip into one of the strangest, most satisfying passages ever in a star vehicle of this magnitude, the stretch that shows how a little girl grieves for her mother, comes to grip with this tragedy, and then, only then, begins to call pa the man she’s so far been calling Sathya. The word slips out in such a matter-of-fact manner, it made me tear up – there’s no epiphany, the background score doesn’t erupt into an orgasm, the moment just is, she just decides it’s time she called this man pa. And how exquisitely Sathyadev recedes into the background in these portions, knowing that Isha comes first, that for a while, his journey has to take a backseat to hers, even if it takes four years. (Unakkenna venum sollu, beautifully composed by Harris Jayaraj , plays over this portion.) Anikha Surendran is wonderful as Isha. There’s a rawness in her that contrasts well with the hyper-sheen that coats the Gautham Menon heroine, who can come off, at times, as too perfect, too idealised. Look at the scenes where Thenmozhi comes to live with Sathyadev and Isha. There are no clichés, no weeping when Isha points out Hemanika’s picture to Thenmozhi, no drama about Isha fearing the arrival of a new “mother.” Sathyadev asks her, simply, if Thenmozhi can stay with them for a while. Isha smiles and says, “Of course, appa,” and the faintest bit of impatience in her voice tells us what she leaves unsaid. (“Do you even have to ask?”)

I suspect that the film Menon really wanted to make had to do with Isha and Sathyadev, and that the macho posturing of the cop-movie is what he needed in order to sell that film to this star’s audience. The soul of Yennai Arindhaal, if you will, is in the scenes between father and daughter. The fathers in Menon’s movies are supercalifragilistic creatures – kind and loving and supportive and full of great advice (they’re, in a way, as much idealised as the heroines are) – and here we see the tough cop’s natural progression into being that kind of father. In Kaakha Kaakha, the tough cop resisted relationships, and we saw him grow into a lover, a husband. In Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, the tough cop went a step further. In Kaakha Kaakha, the heroine had to convince the hero about embarking on a relationship; in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, it was the other way around. And as he entered this relationship, he found himself a father, though the fatherhood angle was never explored. That exploration occurs in Yennai Arindhaal, where the hero doesn’t need a great father-figure, as in Vaaranam Aayiram (though he does get one, briefly, in the form of Nasser) – the hero himself is that great father-figure. And at least a part of the film is about how such a man would deal with these responsibilities. He tries to give up being an active cop and opts for a desk job, but he finds he just cannot do it. The fact that he’s back on active duty makes it great news for those who walked in for an Ajith movie, but the fact that he even tried to give it all up, for the sake of his daughter, is what makes this a Gautham Menon movie. Sathyadev’s father tells him that he needs to find himself – hence, “yennai arindhaal” – and this metaphorical journey is juxtaposed with a literal journey when Sathyadev and Isha take off, impulsively, on a long trip. Thereon, the film constantly stresses on what it takes for a cop to be a father. When Sathyadev finds his friend’s kidnapped child in six days, we hear his thoughts in a voiceover: “Aaru naal… aarey naal.” The former could be the anguished father speaking, that it took six days. The latter could be the supercop speaking, that it took just six days.

Yennai Arindhaal breaks new ground in its use of the voiceover (first-person narration, really), though this technique hasn’t been employed all that much in our cinema. We’ve heard it in Menon’s own films, of course – say, in Vaaranam Aayiram, where the son kept calling out to his dead father, remembering this, remembering that. But here, we hear all kinds of voiceovers, and they pull us into the world of the characters – we end up inside their heads. We get voiceovers from Thenmozhi, as she first runs into Sathyadev and drools over his appearance. (She slips into a sophisticated version of the super-figure-machi reverie that we usually get from the hero or his best friend.) We get voiceovers from Victor, when he bastardises the lyrics of the song Engalukkum kaalam varum into some kind of scummy philosophy. We get voiceovers from Sathyadev as a child, when he says this is the last time he’s seeing his father. (What a difference it makes when such a thing is conveyed to us through internal monologue rather than as part of a dialogue delivered to, say, Thenmozhi or Hemanika.) And from the adult Sathyadev we get voiceovers that speak about the nature of his profession (98 % of cops never take their guns out of the holster; he belongs to the other 2%), or hint at existential thoughts (looking at the pregnant Hemanika while on a dangerous mission, he muses about life and death), or reveal his emotions (he feels like a 17-year-old whenever he sees Hemanika). Sometimes, the dialogues segue into voiceovers, as in the scene that begins with Sathyadev at a hearing and goes on to show the workings of an organ-trafficking gang. (A nice pulpy touch, that.) At one point, Sathyadev even uses one of Thamarai’s lyrics for this film in a voiceover: Ulagenum paramapadham, vizhundha pin uyarvu varum…

Even if Yennai Arindhaal is somewhat disappointing as a Gautham Menon movie, it’s a first-rate Ajith movie. (The actor is in pretty decent form too. He still cannot pull off emotional scenes convincingly, but I totally bought his righteous explosion when someone tries to bribe him. It’s an honest man’s explosion.) The false notes are very few. I didn’t care for the director’s cameo as an intelligence officer. This sort of thing is distracting – we think, “Oh look, there’s Gautham Menon.” And I winced at a few lines, as when Sathyadev says, “Miga periya thappu.” That word, miga, just seemed wrong. I didn’t think Sathyadev would use it here. He’d say romba. But the film is entirely one of a piece – despite the familiarity of the Gautham Menon heroines or the Gautham Menon moments. And these are still done very well. The cautious, formal nature of the initial sms-es between Hemanika and Sathyadev; the notion that you need to respect the person first if you’re to fall in love with them (a galaxy apart from all the love-at-first-sight scenarios); the little narrative sleights of hand, like the fact that we’re primed for Victor’s flashback when he mentions meeting Sathyadev in prison, but the actual meeting is shown in Sathyadev’s flashback; the song picturisations that continue to define the characters, as when we cut back and forth between Sathyadev beating up goons and Hemanika teaching her students dance; the long courtship between Sathyadev and Hemanika, with its implication that “people are talking”; or even the fact that Thenmozhi isn’t some random person who’s there just because a second heroine is needed, but that she ends up the heroine because of the part she plays in the plot – in another filmmaking culture, it may be possible to view all this dispassionately, from a distance, but in the context of commercial Tamil cinema orbiting around the gravitational pull of a giant star, it’s enough to leave you weak-kneed with gratitude.

Losers, All

With release after release tanking at the box office, what strategies are exhibitors employing to cope with this extended dry spell?

After abysmal box-office collections last year, the film industry forged into the New Year with an air of optimism, hoping that 2015 would bring better luck. However, almost two months into 2015 and cinema owners are already reeling under the pressure of films tanking at the box office. And this, despite some big-ticket Hindi releases hitting the marquee. Here’s more bad news – things might go further downhill, what with examinations about to begin and the cricket season tempting audiences away from cinemas.

In fact, barring a few odd films, there are no big films slated for release in the next few months, up until Piku, which features Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone, and will release only on April 30.

How will cinema owners sustain during these tough times, facing not only lack of content but also having to deal with fixed costs such as rentals, projection costs, salaries and so on? .......

Kamal Gianchandani, President, PVR Pictures

Despite the fact that no Hindi film has done exceptional business at the box office, we as a chain haven’t been affected all that much. The movie business is a cyclical one and the last quarter is no different from any other year. Thanks to PK, which ran across several weeks and the business of the film spilt over to January, we didn’t face any decrease in footfalls. Our cinemas cater to the urban audience and they appreciated a film like Baby, which generated good business at our cinemas. Besides, we also released a lot of Hollywood films and had a special release of Oscar-nominated films which attracted a lot of people. Regional cinema too kept the shows alive. Yennai Arindhaal, which is Ajith’s Tamil film, and a few Bengali films have done well so our admits have not been affected at all.

Yennai Arindhaal' Box Office: Ajith Starrer Grosses ₹100 Crore Worldwide
By Prakash Upadhyaya February 23, 2015 15:46 IST

Ajith Kumar's "Yennai Arindhaal" has finally managed a century at the box office. The Tamil movie has grossed over ₹100 crore worldwide.

A movie still from "Yennai Arindhaal".IB Times India
As per the trade buzz, "Yennai Arindhaal", by the end of its third weekend, has grossed about ₹102 crore. The response for the movie has been good despite the World Cup fever gripping the nation.

Especially, the turn-out for the Tamil movie in multiplexes has been good. "Yennai Arindhaal", which is Ajith's Tamil film, and a few Bengali films have done well so our admits have not been affected at all," Box Office India reports Kamal Gianchandani, president, PVR Pictures, as saying.

At the domestic box office, "Yennai Arindhaal" has earned close to ₹75 crore. It has earned about ₹28 crore from international circuits. According to trade reports, the film has earned about ₹60.5 crore in Tamil Nadu, ₹6.3 crore in Karnataka, ₹5.30 crore in Kerala and the remaining business from rest of India.

When it comes to overseas, "Yennai Arindhaal" is doing well in the US, UK and a few other centres. But the breakup of the business made by the film at different centres is yet to be revealed by trade analysts.

At the Chennai box office, "Yennai Arindhaal" has raked in about ₹5.75 crore so far. The film had above 425 shows in the past week and the occupancy had been good. During the weekend, the response was exceptionally well in some theatres.

Currently, "Yennai Arindhaal" is considered as an above-average film at the box office. The Tamil movie should have a decent run for a few weeks to become a hit movie.

"Yennai Arindhaal" is a romantic-action movie directed by Gautham Menon. AM Rathnam produced film has Trisha Krishnan, Anushka Shetty and Arun Vijay playing key roles along with Ajith Kumar.

‘என்னை அறிந்தால்’ – 100 கோடி வசூல்…

Posted On : February 24, 2015

though many of websites report that YA has grossed over 100Cr there is a section of the media giving mixed news saying we will have to wait for the announcement from the producer...if that is the case then why at all simply give figues each week and weekend and give figures for other films but don't add a disclaimer to wait for the announcement from the producer...these double tongued media...

Malayalam Films 2015

The Kollywood films like I, Yennai Arindhaal received a positive response all around the globe; including the South Indian Film Industry.
Malayalam Films 2015

Though these films are getting a warm welcome in Kerala also; Malyalam films are continuing its state of crisis.

Reaching to the last few days of February; M-Town saw the release of about 20 films within; where most collapsed in box office.

Prithviraj starrer Picket 43; directed by Major Ravi and Rajesh Pillai directed Mili (starring Nivin Pauly, Amala Paul), received a positive response; emerging as a decent hit in box office.
At the same time, Mammootty starrer Fireman, directed by Deepu Karunakaran, which released on 19th February; is looking forward to emerge as the first super hit in 2015.
The film, which saw Mammootty doing the role of a Fireman, received positive response all around; with a collection of 3.20 crores within the 4 days of release (according to reports); which is maintained by the all round positive reviews on social medias and mouth publicity, by the common audience.
The film was also well applauded by the critics; as the story telling on the basis of a crisis management along with a thriller is not common to Indian Film Industry.
Since the exam season is reaching; there will not be a mass release, in order to compete with Fireman.

Thala Ajith wins by a truly massive margin !!!

Feb 25, 2015
When it comes to a 'mass hero' his screen presence and the way he carries himself in a film matter a lot. This is what endears him to the masses and makes his role stay long in the audience's memory. In Tamil cinema, we have our fair share of mass icons who have been ruling the industry for many decades, with their inimitable style, screen presence and other unique attributes.

We at Behindwoods asked our Facebook fans to vote (like) for their favorite star when it comes to screen presence.

SCREEN PRESENCE POLL

This poll saw widespread participation and garnered massive response in the online space. The results, as on 11 am, Feb 25th are as follows

1. Ajith Kumar - 18273 likes
2. Vijay - 10419 likes
3. Rajinikanth - 7653 likes
4. Kamal Haasan - 4374 likes
5. Vikram - 4048 likes

Well...YA is definitely a BB and not above-average-hit as described by some of the websites...I am sure the budget of the movie would have been in the range of 40c-50c if I am not wrong seeing the production values of the movie...the movie was grand and class..yes..but Ajith was more grander and classy... :) ;)

as media say YA reached 100cr but it's an above - average hit. then they expect the movie to earn more than 100cr.

maybe YA business was done expecting more than 100 cr earnings at the boxoffice.

it also shows that his previous movies did earn more than 100 cr.

Yennai Arindhaal enters the 25th day of its theatrical run today. The film may not have achieved big commercial glory at the box office, but it has been met with a good share of positive reviews and acclaim from not just ardent Ajith fans but also the neutral movie-goers.

A section of the audience feels that the film's release time wasn't perfectly planned as Anegan arrived in the very next week, while Kaaki Sattai released a few days back, thereby robbing Yennai Arindhaal of many theaters and shows within a short span of time.

Right now, across theaters falling under the Chennai city limit , YA has 8 shows a day, primarily in the multiplexes such as Sathyam, Escape and PVR. The film is still performing well on weekends in these multiplexes thanks to its urban appeal and the Chennai city gross is around 5.92 crores till date. The overseas space has been a profitable zone for the film, contributing close to one-third of the film's total worldwide gross.

What a chage over post Release asusual Blame game started now on AMR

“I can’t go off love stories”
S. SHIVAKUMAR

Gautam Menon talks about 'Yennai Arindhal', his next project with Vikram and about working with Kamal Haasan

He’s passed the acid test, again. He’s made a film that’s not disappointed a superstar’s fanatics without compromising too much on his own sensibilities as a filmmaker. Yennai Arindhal is definitely not his best. The pressure to perform is seen in some portions but his stamp of sensitivity is all over. It’s surely not run of the mill which is not what you expect from him. He looks relaxed when I meet him for a post mortem of the recent past. On his wishlist are films with Amitabh, Rajni and yes Kamal again. Right now he’s resumed shooting his film with Simbu. Next is Dhruva Nakshathiram with Vikram, a project Suriya refused because he didn’t get the bound script.

You must be more relieved than happy now.

True. I just wish I had more time for post production which was finished in 25 days. My editor Anthony needs more time too. Even if we had one week more we could have worked on the first half. Anyway no excuses. The producer was in a hurry. I was relieved that we could meet the deadline set by the producer but that’s not the ideal way to work.

Is it your lengthiest film?

Yes. Some films will hold if the material you have is good enough. Theory wise 2 hours 20 minutes would have been ideal for a film like this but this is about a man’s journey in life.

Length is irrelevant if you don’t feel it. Why did you have to trim the film? Was it pressure from the producer?

Absolutely. I believe once you release the film, which is done after a lot of deliberations you stick by it. Even after the final mixing and after Ajith watched the film we trimmed the length and were satisfied. The first three days are for Ajith fans after which the general audience streams in. The film is still lengthy but people have liked it. A song was removed at the producer’s insistence.

Are these the things that forced you to start producing?

Yes. Right from the word go. I’m passionate about films and have made the film at a reasonable budget. There are times when I’ve pumped in money to finish the film just to make the producer safe. I make films from my heart. I release it the way I want. I make films on a whim. I take full responsibility for the outcome. During the making I don’t like anyone asking me why I want something. I don’t waste money or time whether it’s mine or a producer’s. I write three fourths of a script, start shooting and then work on the rest depending on the actor and the characterisation. A producer wants to know what happens in the end which I understand.

This was the bone of contention with Suriya, that you didn’t give the complete script.

Yes but I thought Suriya would understand that. We made ‘Kakhka Kakhka’ and ‘Varanam Ayiram’ in my style. They didn’t go bad. ‘Dhruva Nakshathiram’ was a new age script, nothing like what we’d done. He wanted the second half narrated fully. I told him I had the first half and after we started shooting I’d give it to him. I wanted to see how he looked portraying the character. I had more at stake than him. I was hoping he’d understand having worked with me.

I guess you were more disappointed than angry when he went public over a trivial problem.

Completely. If I’d been angry I’d have retorted. I don’t know what pressure he had. The statement he gave was so unlike him. I met him because I didn’t want this to end on a bitter note. I’m sure he wants to work with me and I have no problems. But next time, I’ll have a bound script.

Tell me is it the ideal way to work. A producer or Suriya will have apprehensions.

I’m saying it’s a safe way to work. It’s not as if I don’t have anything. I’m giving you 75% of the script which will not change irrespective of the climax. I like to grow with the characters and decide their fate, emotionally. It’s not the ideal way to work. It just depends on the rapport you share. I wouldn’t do it with Rajni Sir. Strangely Ajit agreed with me.

Is this how you worked with Kamal?

With Kamal sir I had narrated only the first half. He wanted me to direct a couple of his scripts and finally after six months he said let’s shoot whatever you have in mind. He asked me if he was playing a police officer. I said yes and he said he’ll come to the sets in uniform. He was to play a nonchalant officer who has everything figured out. He didn’t ask too many questions, just did what I asked him to. I’ll not do that again when I approach him.

The hangover of ‘Veteyadu Vilayadu’is there in ‘Yennai Arindhal’.

It’s the hangover of ‘Kakhka Kakhka’. Anbu Chelvan took the name of Raghavan. Sathya is an extension. For me the characters are the same. I told Ajith his character was an extension of ‘VV’ because he wanted to do a film like that. It’s part three of my trilogy. I want to be Christopher Nolan at some point.

Mani Ratnam always says you’re spoilt once you work with Kamal.

True. When you write a scene you have a vision of how an actor will play it. I even act out the scene in my room while writing. You feel this is what an actor can do in that scene but he adds another unseen dimension which leaves you awestruck. That’s the dream for any director. Strangely the only other actor I see that quality in is Simbu.

The last couple of years have not been too kind to you emotionally and financially. Did Ajith really just call you and say let’s do a film?

Well he called Rathnam Sir and said let’s get Gautam onboard — that was the call that changed everything for us. With me here was a person who put it out because he thought it’ll destroy me. Corporate companies backed off from projects. I sat with my partner and decided we’ll do our own stuff. That’s when Simbu blindly agreed to do a film with me. I was back in circulation. I shot for thirty days when I got the call to meet Ajith. Simbu was kind enough to agree when I had to put his project on the backburner.

Should a creative person be financially burdened by turning producer?

It works for me because anyway they want a guarantee from me before signing on the dotted line. I become liable. So anyway I’ll be scrounging. There’s a family and staff to be maintained. Thankfully, people at home have been understanding. We are looking for corporate funding based on track record. I’d rather face these setbacks now than later in my career.

Women yearn for men like your heroes, strong, yet romantic and men dream of the women in your films, modern, yet homely.

I want women to be like that. That’s how I see them.

Does your wife complain that you’re not anything like your heroes on-screen?

(laughs) She doesn’t complain which means I am. But she does ask where these men are in real life. Some people tell me I make fantasies.

After ‘Needhane Yendhan ponvasantham’ you swore off love stories.

I’m okay with being known for my films over a period of time. A lot of films get forgotten. I can’t go off love stories. My next with Simbu is a love story till halfway. I want to put Simbu out as an action hero in the next two films. Action in this film will be realistic. He’s got great potential as an actor. He’s the Ranbir Kapoor of the South. You can’t wean me off love stories.

Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal released Online

Herotalkies.com (VS Ecommerce Ventures) has released Thala Ajith Kumar's most anticipated movie of the year on their website legally and in Full HD 1080p with English Subtitles, only for audiences living outside India.

Ajith Kumar's 55th release is and has been one of this year's biggest box-office hits so far, and raked in a gross collection of more than 100 Crore worldwide with 73.30 Crores from India and 28.50 Crores overseas.

Having screened at 400 theatres in Tamil Nadu and 1100 theatres worldwide, upon release, the Ajith starrer did exceptionally well in the UK, US, and several other countries. One of the best movies of recent times. Ajith, along with Trisha and Anikha nail to perfection their respective characters. And as already said numerous times, the amazing performance of Arun Vijay. A visual treat from the first frame to the last. A repeat watch movie. Kudos to GVM. So much better than any of his previous movies. Ajith finally has made that movie that makes catupults him to super stardom, the way Badsha did for Rajini.

A big moment in Yennai Arindhaal's journey
Mar 26, 2015
The Ajith starrer Yennai Arindhaal, directed by Gautham Menon, enters the 50th day of its run today, 26th March. The film completes this coveted mark in quite a few centers across Chennai such as Sathyam, Luxe, Inox National, PVR and Mayajaal.

The film has been accepted majorly by Ajith's loyal fans and also by a large section of the common audience who generally enjoy Gautham's works. Ajith's various looks and maturity in accepting such a role have come in for appreciation. The presence of Trisha, Anushka, Arun Vijay and the chartbuster songs of Harris Jayaraj have also played a major part in the movie's acceptance.

Yennai Arindhaal is also a good hit in the overseas space with markets like Canada screening the film even now for the 8th week running.

Behindwoods wishes the Yennai Arindhaal team on the 50 day milestone.

Yenthavaadu Gaani Movie Review

Director Gautham Menon has earlier made two cop dramas Kakka Kakka (Gharshana) and Vettaiyyadu Villayadu (Raghavan IPS) and with Yennai Arindhaal (Yethavaadu Gaani) he completes the police trilogy. This film has Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar as the lead.

What is it about?

Satyadev (Ajith Kumar) resgins to his police job to take care of his daughter. After being out of duty for four years, Satyadev is caught in a situation where he has to use his police brain to save his friend's kidnapped daughter. In the process he comes to know about a lady Chandramukhi (Anushka) whose life is under serious threat. Chandramukhi falls for Satyadev in first look and she is neither aware of the threat nor Satyadev's past.

Perfomances:

Ajith Kumar is just wonderful in the role of a sincere cop. His gracious screen presence and stylish looks adds to the character. Ajith is recently appearing with grey hair in all his films. Director used that look to show him as an ageing cop. He is brilliant in the scenes where he confronts Arun Vijay. Like all Gautham Menon's cop movies, this one too had a powerful villain in the form of Arun Vijay who is up to the task. Anushka Shetty did fine and Trisha is mesmerizing in a brief role. Suman and Vivek played important supporting roles.

Technicalities:

Gautham Menon is at his best in dealing with romantic dramas and cop movies. His grasp over the police activities and their style of operation is unbelievable. You feel like all this is real at many instances. His attention to the minute details is commendable. There is not a single scene where he faltered as a director. Hope Gautham doesn't stop doing cop movies as he is done with the trilogy.

Most of the songs are situational. Harris Jairaj's background score is brilliant especially during the penultimate scenes. Cinematography is topnotch. Action scenes have been choreographed very well. Editing is good.

Thumbs Up:

Ajith Kumar

Second Half

Thumbs Down:

Lengthy

Slow Pace

Analysis:

Only complaint with Gautham movies is they are relatively slow irrespective of the genre. Films based on cops moves at breakneck speed usually, but Gautham Menon keeps the action realistic all the time. Hence the films move at snail pace that may not suit the tastes of all sections of audience. But for those who like Gautham's style of filmmaking, Yenthavaadu Gaani is worth a watch for some brilliantly executed scenes.

Ajith Kumar steals the show with his stylish and subtle performance. Not even once he goes overboard which is a rare quality in Tamil actors. First half is loaded with some dragged scenes that may put off few audiences even before the action starts. Real Cop story starts only after the interval. Second half is interesting as Ajith Kumar chases the organ mafia in his own style.

There is Gautham Menon stamp all over the film. We can see the characters talking to themselves, getting vocal in regretting their actions and consequences. A beautiful romantic track that is a must in every Gautham's movie is also present here. However one would draw many similarities between Kakka Kakka and Vettaiyyadu Villayadu. This may not be as good as the other two but surely has its moments to thrill the fans of earlier cop movies from the same director. Yennai Arindhal is an average fare at Tamil Box Office but that didn't stop Yenthavaadu Gaani to receive warm welcome from the Telugu audience. This is a must watch for Gautham Menon and Ajith Kumar fans.

Verdict: Engaging Cop Drama.
