No no. Movie censored with no cuts of 188 mins. To make it more crisp director reduced to 166 mins. Full version will be available in theatres after 3-4 weeks and also in DVD.

If I were to interview Dan, my first question would be his take on our Film making style. I was always curious to know what other techniciens who come from a different culture, including social and cinema, look at our strategy. Australian films are very genre specific. They are quite famous for that. The movie never sways and often land up as an 'look-upon' material for other country film makers. Dan himself has made a film.
Basically, we make movies that cater all sets of audience differed in social status as well as age. So the script undergoes various comprises and in return it shoots up the run time too. From outside it looks like going awry, but actually its a one of the kind movie making that is slowly penetrating into other industries. Hollywood is the first to get affected as it seems to churn movies keeping in mind world-wide audience where not even the spoken accents are properly maintained.
Dan, seeing it through the camera, how the scenes are shot and unfolding, should have his own comparitive or analytic take on our style. Hope someone interviews him and inbetween all the junk questions - type : How was our Thala - Who is pretty, Anuska or Trisha - Tell us about GVM - I sincerely hope the interviewer ask this one damn question.

4th February 2015, 05:51 PM
What is the screen count of Mayajaal? Guess it is for Billa or Billa2, Mayajaal screened 100 shows, right? What about Mankatha and Veeram?
BM
4th February 2015, 05:55 PM
^ what is the max shows mayajaal can accomodate in a day?
Total 16 screens.
For this runtime they can squeeze and accommodate nearly 95. Arrambam had 95+ shows. Billa2 101 shows. Mankatha around 80 shows (should check the screenshot for the exact numbers).
Now the problem in tracking exact show number is both Mayajaal and Book My Show are started to remove the completed shows from the list and start adding new shows.

One neutrals Fan Review...
Sasi Kumar (https://m.facebook.com/fussyhunk?fref=nf&ref=m_notif¬if_t=like&__tn__=C)Yennai Arindhaal - Director Gautham has once again proved he will not compromise the story nor screenplay for the hero. The bonus is, director remained his conventional way of story-telling, yet potray Ajith to the best. It was a win-win situation. Ajith Kumar gave his heart and soul for the character Satyadev. Trisha was impressive in Maya Bazaar song. Anushka and Vivek done justice to their role. Parvathy potrayed a decent performance for a major Tamil debut. It is not so often, there will be a villain in Gautham's movie, but when there is, they will be remembered. Arun Vijay as Victor will follow the likes of Kaaka Kaaka Pandiya and Vettayadu Villayadu Daniel. Harris BGM was icing on the cake, esp to display Thala in a mass scene. The first half had shades of his previous cop tale, while the climax of the movie was the most impressive part of the movie. It is a typical Gautham way of making a movie with screenplay was the heart of the movie. Overall 8.5/10.
P/S: Vikram fans celebrated Ai-Ponggal early this year and now it is ThalaThaipusam for Ajith fans!

another review: http://madaboutmoviez.com/2015/02/05/yennai-arindhaal-movie-review-sathya-dev-jayate/
I have a few issues with Yennai Arindhaal. It is close to three hours long and the second act drags a bit. It resembles Vettaiyadu Vilayaadu to some extent in the first half. The BGM is too loud. Okay, now that we have gotten this out of the way, let us settle down and come to the enjoyable parts.
Yennai Arindhaal Poster 2Cheers Guys, the wait is over. Gautham Vasudev Menon is back and how! He delivers a stunning film that utilizes the star power of Ajith like no other film has. Produced by A. M. Rathnam, co-written and directed by Gautham Menon, edited by Anthony and beautifully cinematographed by Dan MacArthur, Yennai Arindhaal… (English: Well, if you know me…) is a thriller set in Chennai.
Despite some elemental flaws in logic and plausibility, this is a tense and potent film that almost reaches the sort of greatness that we can find to a greater degree in Menon’s best work, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu. The plot tracks the life and journey of Sathya Dev and how his life changes due to his choices. For a movie about Sathya Dev’s life, Menon boldly experiments by opening the film (and closing it) with the point of view of Thenmozhi (played by Anushka Shetty). And as a script writer and director, he is much more relaxed and confident and plays to Ajith Kumar fans’ galleries. (Remember the opening scene in Vettaiyadu Vilaiyaadu where he brilliantly used the star power of Kamal?!). There are many clap worthy scenes that remain with you even after the movie is over. (My pick is a scene involving the term Collateral damage!). Thala fans happy Annachi!
And Menon also shows his true class in the subtle emotional scenes involving Sathya Dev and Esha, his daughter. (Esha trying out single plait after looking at the portrait of Hemanika is superb – almost as good as a Suseenthiran touch!). The romantic track between Trisha and Ajith in the first half has a uncomfortably close resemblance to Vettaiyadu Vilaiyaadu, but the scene where Ajith proposes to Trisha belongs to the best of Menon list(Trisha is brilliant in a cameo). Menon is supported by some excellent work by his crew. The action sequences are superbly staged and edited, the cinematography by Dan Macarthur is truly a class act and Harris songs gel with the film very well. (Harris – Tone down your BGM a bit please).
The complete cast is competent but the movie belongs to the director. With perhaps the best third act after Aaranya Kaandam, Menon carefully plans and executes a knock out punch in the third act. Shridhar Raghavan and Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s names in the scripting department, the well cut trailer and the catchy songs had raised expectations sky high for me. Every bit of the expectations has been fulfilled. Satya Dev Jayate!

Seen it. It will satisfy typical A class and family crowd. Esp non-ajith fans. there is little for "mass ajith" fans. Story wise, it is a simple story and at places reminds all GV movies. You can say it Is an Ajit film and not a Thala film. Arun Vijay has even space and excels in his performance. Second half is racy compared to first half. Thala - Trisha scenes, Thala - little girl scenes, Thala - Nasser scenes etc all are good.

If a story has to be told with an individual who enjoys a larger than life persona off-screen, isn't that a challenge? With the premise of the story being simple and intact, Yennai Arindhaal is what Sathyadev experiences as a timid boy, an uptight cop, a passionate lover, a loving father and a killer with a heart. Thanks to Gautham, Ajith is utilized far more than the usual gimmicks and compulsions of a commercial hero. Ajith is made to cry, look defeated, feel his pain, and also get hurt quite a lot of times. If the ardent, dedicated followers of Ajith can accept Yennai Arindhaal, then the actor Ajith is coming closer to you.
What if all that you want in life tends to move away from you? What will you do to save the rest from leaving you? Ajith as Sathyadev delivers the right emotion and is effortless with the multiple transformations his character goes through. With quintessential similarities between the real Ajith and Sathyadev, you tend to see the gentler, well-groomed, well-bred and a genuine Ajith on screen. With the envying looks and the sweltering screen presence, Ajith is undeniably one of the smartest looking heroes we have, giving no work for the make-up artists. If you have a problem differentiating the class Ajith and the mass Ajith, then Yennai Arindhaal might give you an alternate experience of watching a Thala movie.
Gautham's untiring efforts in positioning womanhood, the unadulterated love for somebody, addressing the plight of single parents, the clinical touch of a father, the insecurity of a villain and the pain of losing something, is a tried and tested template of his and he uses it here too.
Trisha has replaced Jyothika as Gautham's favorite female lead and she continues to give us the same feeling since the Lesa Lesa days, with her beauty and elegance. She excels as a mother and scores with her love filled eyes. With all the focus on Ajith and Ajith only, Anushka gets a fair share of the pie with her non-dramatic acting. If a baddie needs to trouble Sathyadev, he has to look powerful, think cunning and not have second thoughts about hitting. Arun Vijay looks macho, has a flawless body, wears rich costumes and his hairstyle will very soon set a trend. Victor's (Arun) wife, Parvathy Nair gets a noticeable role and has perfectly done what has been told. Vivek evokes laughter when you badly need it and is sticking to his Padikathavan days' facial expressions.
Harris' songs emotionally cement Yennai Arindhaal. Back to back numbers in the first half will enlarge your expectations on the second half. Kudos to Gautham for making songs a part of the narrative and preventing them from becoming obstrucive. With so much to tell in a single film, YA spends a lot on establishing, then finally dwells into a conflict, then diving into a denouement.
If actors need to bring a vigorous physical change and act their lungs out, Ajith can gravitate the same feeling with a walk and a fearsome look. Special credits to him for opening up to a story like this and giving what it needs, than eyeing for moments that would multiply his ever-growing fan base.
Coming to the technicalities, Dan's camerawork is equally stunning and sensually colorful. He is a promising find. Anthony is Gautham's partner-in-crime and he does set the much needed pace and gives an extra hand with the non-linear narration. His cuts and transitions add an overall value. Silva's realistic stunts look painful and feel hard. Harris' BGM with pulsating dub-step, guitars on distortion and sax with the pianos in the backing, gratify every dimension of the emotions portrayed.
If you are going to see applause for the usage of foul language, then it's Yennai Arindhaal. Some prompted acting, Gautham templated dialogues, an already exposed story are few minuses that Yennai Arindhaal carries. The oscillations between the 'Mellisaana Kodu' create a stir.
Yennai Arindhaal is a feeling, a learning that just takes sometime to tell you the story, by not dramatizing events and exaggerating factors. Finally, Gautham should be credited for making a movie not for Ajith fans, but one which Ajith's fans will enjoy! Isn't that what good cinema is about?
Verdict: It's Gautham's movie with Ajith adding colour admirably

It’s just like the law of physics, what happens when an immovable force gets hit by a high speed object; what happens when a man who exerts extensive class joins hand with a star who basks in mass. Gautam V menon’s movies are a class of its own,he deals with romance and action rather keenly and places his signature card all over, withYennai Arindhal the director enters the dugout of Ajith who has a great respect for his director, still manages to establish his hefty image. YennaiArindhal will be a completion of Cop trilogy for Gautam V menon, lets take a look
The Movie
GVM’s movies are rich in romance, you can almost tell when love is in the air; he sets the perfect milieu with a mesmerizing BGM, a cup of coffee and some light hearted cozy moments. He takes you on a ride with moments like these in Yennai Arindhaal and then bounces back to gritty action. The story revolves around the central figure of a daring cop Satyadev, merciless, raw, with a license to kill. Playing an undercover agent is Satyadev, gets rugged amongst the gangsters and pounces when he has a chance to nab them. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, most of GVM’s movies are agenda oriented, they are propagated along the storyline and the psychotic villain is provoked to touch the sensitive side of the protagonist. This has been the case with KK, VV and yet again with Yennai Arindhaal too.
The first half takes time to establish the character of Satyadev, his agonizing past that was mixed with his first love; Trisha and a heartbreaking tragedy that took him down the road as a single parent. With a past that clouds his present, Ajith’s struggle to cope with the unfortunate incident and yet to nurture the present carefully is penned wonderfully by GVM.
The moment Trisha enters the screen the film gets predictable in every aspect and the rest is all how the screenplay weaves out to entertain. It would be pretty irresistible to stop comparing GVM’s two other cop movies with Yennai Arindhaal, the kind of tension he brings in the second half with the kidnapping, swearing phone abuses, and the abduction threats are too much to brush off. If the first half was pretty slow with Satyadev’s flashback, the second half races ahead with some steamy dialogues, fight sequences and some master mind detective work. That and enter Arun Vijay, after a silent first half he comes as a merciless goon in the second with single point agenda. He looks stunning for a baddie, tries to rack his brain to compete with the IPS officer and what happens next is to watch and find out.
Whats good:
To start with YennaiArindhaal heavily falls into the character of Satyadev, a character etched pretty well by GVM. Makes us wonder if anyone else apart from Ajith could have done a better job out of it. For the character requires a bold and daring voice, the very voice that would send shivers down a rogue, the character deserves a look that Ajith fits in simply deservingly. Getting deep down into the character’s mindset GVM pens a simple script by adding few lovely moments like the steadfast romance between Trisha and Ajith, a careful father who refuses to let go of the promise, a gangster who seethes with vengeance, a cop who gets back to business when it matters.
Trisha’s role leaps over Anushka’s, she appears in the flashback and trots home by leaving us with a heavy heart. There might not be the goose bumpy moments that we have seen in KK, VV but still she ravishes with beauty and brains. The last half hour involving Arun Vijay’s word battle is where the actor shows his prowess, it’s a different ball game for the actor but he clicks wisely with dialogues and stunts.
Comic relief comes in the form of Vivek, he comes with a few one liners and gives away a hearty laugh making the audience wanting more. Parvathy Nair and Daniel Balaji make brief appearances, but some important ones.
Action sequences and cinematography are something that GVM never leaves room for error and they are spot on. Yet another striking thing about Yennai Arindhaal is the dialogue delivery, especially Ajith just erupts when it comes to the situation.
Why, Where and how:
Kidnapping, the waiting game, vengeance all that we have seen in KK and VV has an uncanny resemblance in Yennai Arindhaal too. A lot of similarity, only difference being the screenplay and Ajith’s screen presence.
Anushka’s character has little to offer, for a hugely reputed star, the role looks short-lived.
The second half races away through the climax sequences leaving scope for some crisp editing and as is the case of first half too which comes as a narration similar to most of GVM movies adding too much clock time.
The script is ordinary and basks heavily on the character of Satyadev leaving much to wonder about the rest.
Harris’s music apart from the signature YA theme, has little to offer. Using rock fusion for BGM doesn’t seem much appropriate for the action sequences as is the case for romance he hasn’t put his best foot forward.
All said, Yennai Arindhaal is a mixture of Mass juxtaposed with class and is sure to quench the thirst of Ajith’s fans and GVM’s signature style movie goers. Barring the nostalgic moments from his previous movies and the slow screenplay Yennai Arindhaal is a rock solid entertainer with enough scenes to get you hooked.
Verdict : Gautham Menon Class delivered by Ajith’s Mass screen presence
Rating : 3.25/5

A journey.... This remains to be an inevitable theme of Gautham Vasudev Menon films irrespective of what the genres he delivers. Glimpse upon his filmography and you will find the protagonists travelling with encounters in their lives. This time, it’s Sathya Dev (Ajith Kumar) and different episodes of his life, where characters of love, passion, evil and happiness cross him. Produced by AM Rathnam with an ensemble star-cast of Arun Vijay, Trisha, Anushka Shetty, Vivekh, Parvathy Nair and many others, Yennai Arindhaal hits screens worldwide today and Cinema Lead brings you an exclusive review of this film.
The film opens with Thenmozhi (Anushka Shetty) meeting Sathya Dev (Ajith Kumar) on a flight journey from USA to Chennai. She falls in love with him at first sight and even boldly tries to propose. Very next day, she manages to meet him at coffee shop and when she is about to express her love, the mysterious identity of Sathya Dev gets revealed as Victor (Arun Vijay) along with his henchmen breaks in to kill Thenmozhi. Here begins the journey of story traversing back in life of Sathya Dev from his 13 years of age.
Ask someone to narrate the story in few lines of Yennai Arindhaal and you’ll feel it slightly timeworn stuff, much on the usual lines of Gautham Menon panache, but it’s the versatility of screenwriters as they manage to keep you engrossed in many parts, especially during second half that comes with nitty-gritty thrill elements. Yennai Arindhaal gets more special not just because of Ajith Kumar’s presence, but the way the actor has De-massed himself to settle completely into the characterisation. Naturally, there are certain elements that enhance his role and that’s a rare magical touch of filmmakers, where their protagonists garner huge applause for the characters and not just the screen presence. A very casual never-seen before introduction scene for Ajith Kumar itself could stand out to be an ample evidence. The first half is packaged with snail-paced moments, where more emphasis is laid on characterisations and a retrospective journey of protagonist. It’s post-intermission phase that scales an intense depth of engaging moments, especially the next-to-last 30 minutes that literally moves you to edge-of-seats.
Ajith Kumar brings a naturalistic approach to his characterisation. It’s a surprise to see an actor openly admitting his age factors. His role is convincingly sketched and his exertion towards emoting with furiousness, elegance and poignance is remarkable. Trisha might not appear throughout the film, but she sustains in your senses even post-the show and Anushka Shetty doesn’t have much to score, though the missy is the central plot of this flick. Vivekh is humorous in places and gets his scope throughout the drama. Arun Vijay is extraordinary and years after his entry into showbiz, this becomes his ever biggest magnum opus and perhaps, his rebirth in Tamil cinema. Watch out for his last 30 minutes of performance, where he stands on par with Ajith Kumar.
Harris Jayaraj’s background score is impeccably brilliant adding the best enhancements and so are his songs that achieve the best with Dan McArthur’s cinematography.
Overall, Yennai Arindhaal is a fantabulous flick with a classic touch by Gautham Menon. Despites, the first hour slightly travelling with average momentum, the power-packed performances, emotional punch of relationships and top-notch technicalities packaged with a gripping second half leaves us fascinated towards the end.
It’s completely a different treat from Ajith Kumar, precisely a classic one and uniquely unparalleled from his previous movies.

Every so often a good 80s-like action-revenge-drama movie has to come and… this one is the ONE. A fantastic old-fashioned action movie with all new style. John Wick – Satya Dev.
Yennai Arindhaal is all about Sathyadev. The title of the movie suits the movie perfectly. As with any good film, ‘Yennai Arindhaal’ has good script, the dialogue is smart, the visuals are stylish, few twists and turns and there are few stars who will make you love with them. Some of the scenes will stun you as they come out of nowhere all of a sudden. The editing is quick and seamless, the music is perfect for the film except in rare few places. Gautham Menon is excellent, with Dan Macarthur always moving the camera which keeps a flow with great visuals. This has it…, the Gautham Menon style of action movie. Beautiful love, heart touching emotional scenes, raw action scenes and style. Although the story is nothing new, the thrill that builds towards the second half and the action scenes are handled superbly by GM. He is here with a damn good movie for the fans of crime dramas and murder mysteries, and for his own fans.
Satyadev character is built very carefully, and ended up to be so precise. The character is developed in such a way that viewers can sympathize with, and lightens the brutal revenge story.
With the length of the movie, the acting had to be stellar to the film to work well with the audience and none of the actors disappoint. Yennai Arindhaal’s list of actors are those actors that you, the viewer, seem unable to take your eyes off as the film progresses. Ajith is just asking us to know him. His best performance till date, in every layers. He is stylish, his sound is damn perfect here, he touches us in emotional scenes and electrify us in the action scenes. ‘Yennai Arindhaal’ is his best performance till date. Gautham always give enough scope for performances and this film is not an exception. I don’t remember another maker who used Ajith perfectly like this in fifteen years!!!, ie after SJ Suriah’s Vaali or Rajeev Menon’s Kandukondain Kandukondain. Trisha is so beautiful, gorgeous and lovely. You might forget everything else from this movie but not Trisha. Viewers will love to see her again. This is Trisha at her best – beauty and performance. Arun Vijay? A star is born. His career line will not be same anymore. He has done a great job. Anushka has done well enough in the limited scope of the character. To say more clearly that character don’t deserve actress of Anushka’s calibre. Underused. Baby Anikha is so lovely.
Redolent of Yennai Arindhaal
Ajith and Arun
Gautham Menon
Harris Jayaraj’s songs
Trisha and Baby Anikha
Second Half
Dan Macarthur’s Visuals
Dense Smoke
Length
If you are going in with an expectation of a mind twisting plot and thought provoking messages then you will find yourself being disappointed. Aside from the good theater experience, few of the events did not make much of sense. Anyway, this is an action movie, it is stylish and it is not faking to be an ‘Nan Kadavul or Kannathil Muthamittal’. Don’t go deep on logic, Yennai Arindhaal is what it is and what it has to be. Another ten minutes of cut, eg: one song atleast, will make it work even bigger.
Yennai Arindhaal is Gautham Menon’s product with many fascinating twists and turns that is extremely entertaining, and satisfying. A grand meeting of mass and class. Gautham Vasudev Menon and Ajith Kumar is a great combination. Pleasing and entertaining.

After quite a wait and a couple of postponements, Thala Ajith's long expected Yennai Arindhaal is finally hitting screens today! Produced by Shri Sai Ram Creations, director Gautham Vasudev Menon's Yennai Arindhaal has Ajith, Anushka, Trisha, Arun Vijay and Vivek playing important roles. Harris Jayaraj has scored the music and Dan Macarthur has cranked the camera with Anthony on the editing board. The songs have already been well received and the movie has a lot of expectations riding on it...
The movie opens to Thenmozhi (Anushka) being prepped up for a potential groom to see her. After ensuring that the guy and his parents run away, a completely disinterested Anushka steps on a plane from Boston to Chennai. On the plane, beside her is a handsome guy. Impressed with him, she follows him around and even goes to meet him at a Coffee Shop the next day. However, here a gang of masked goons descend and utter chaos follows. The handsome guy - Sathyadev (Ajith) saves the day, but is injured by the leader of the gang - Victor (Arun Vijay). Requiring medical attention, Sathyadev asks Thenmozhi to accompany him to the hospital. At the hospital, Sathyadev recounts his earlier association with Victor and an enraged Victor also does the same. Who is Sathyadev? Who is Victor? What is the relation between Sathyadev and Victor? What does Thenmozhi have to do with these two? Watch Yennai Arindhaal on the big screens to know...
Director Gautham Vasudev Menon is known to be a very good story-teller with an affinity for cop stories. He has been successful in getting on screen the lives of cops, in two of his earlier movies and has made an honest attempt to reprise the same success a third time too. The life story of a cop, especially an upright and honest one, is bound to be very eventful and the director has got on screen just how eventful DCP Sathyadev's life is. The twists and turns, though almost predictable, keep the viewers rivetted in their seats. The casting is perfect and the way each character transforms with the passage of time is commendable. Gautham Menon has got all his equations right, with respect to the romance chemistry, thirst for revenge and the action blocks. The interval block and the pre-climax block are brilliant, with Arun Vijay's voice holding forte in the pre-climax.
The massy face-off sequence in the climax has been very nicely choreographed. This movie has to rank among one of Ajith's best performances. He has a lot of scope to perform and emote and not only has he excelled in these, but has gotten the different physical transformation required at different stages of the movie, perfectly right. Trisha as Hemanika, is gorgeous and her combination sequences with Ajith more than make up for anything at all that fans felt amiss in Mankatha - her previous pairing with Ajith. Anushka seems to just be getting prettier by the day and though her character does not have much scope to perform, she shines bright.
This has to be the biggest break of Arun Vijay's career and he has outdone himself and matches up to Ajith frame for frame in the first half. He holds sway in the second half, with his voice as well as flaunting his toned physique. Vivek lends able support in the few scenes he is a part of. Notable cameos by Stunt Silva and Nasser along with a racy screenplay and action packed stunt sequences add to the movie's strengths. Harris Jayaraj's songs have already been well received and he does not disappoint with the BGM as well. The pulsating music keeps the viewers glued into the scenes. Dan MacArthur has done a wonderful job in capturing the vibrant colours of India in the 'Unakenna Vendum Sollu' song. The 'Adhaaru Adhaaru' song is sure to have you all hooting and whistling with Thala Ajith and Arun Vijay raising quite some dust with the dance moves. If the overall run-time is trimmed a bit, this already rocking movie will become all the more taut. The dialogues in the movie are just excellent and make quite an impact on the viewers.
Thala Pongal has finally arrived with Yennai Arindhaal!
The makers of Yennai Arindhaal have got the tight rope walk ("Oru Mellisaana Kodu...") perfectly right... Don't miss it!

What’s Hot
It could be claimed that Gautham Menon is adept in handling ‘cop & criminal’ stories and with this third installment, he only makes that claim stronger. He has framed chapters from a Third police officer’s life which perfectly suits the capabilities and flair Ajith is known for.
With the help of writers Shridhar Raghavan & Thiagarajan Kumararaja, Gautham has been able to let the narrative stay fresh and true to his style at the same time. His films mostly have linear narratives and don’t come with a lot of nagging namesake twists. The narrative in Yennai Arindhaal tows the same line. The adrenaline pumping climax act finishes off things in style.
Through YA’s SathyaDev, Ajith gets a fully-fledged police role into his repertoire & charms with his demeanour and elegance. He deserves to be commended for pulling off the character with minimum fuss & not playing very much to the gallery. His range of emotions are well captured by Gautham (The scene where he breaks down towards the climax about an event from the past & the dialogue that justifies his reaction is a sparkling example of how this partnership has worked in the film)
Arun Vijay as Victor doesn’t join the party for long but when he gets in, he solely owns it for a considerable chunk of time. The belief that Gautham & Ajith should have had in him in giving him major stake towards the climax is justified with his raucous & passionate ranting. Vivekh, in a short supporting role brings a few laughs.
Dan McArthur’s camera-work is a huge plus as it makes its mark as much when it navigates behind the night-owl episodes of Sathyadev in the city lights as it does while capturing the montages through shifting timeframes in Mazhai Vara Pogudhe & Unakkenna Venum Sollu (songs that make a mark in Harris’ music)
Roles of Nasser & Trisha roles are short & sweet and they manage to be impactful in taking the film forward. Parvathy Nair’s tiny role is sure to surprise the audiences as we don’t usually get heroines making a debut in roles like these.
Anthony’s editing & Silva’s stunts provides much needed moments of enthrallment for fans of Ajith in action blocks and the title track. The team’s decision to go for two-frames for a critical shot cleverly aids the Mellisaana Kodu theme of the conversation. Gautham’s dialogues bear the stamp of his usual indulgence in providing ‘Police officer/Criminal’ viewpoints.
What’s Not
The kid & Anushka have performed amply but their roles have only limited scope which makes them stick out as the film shifts to another gear when they take centre-stage. The background score of Harris provides only 2 noteworthy bits but otherwise comes nowhere close to what he gave in Vettaiyadu (In fact, there is an accidental rehash of Thala Pola Varuma music for the antagonist!)
Some of the chase episodes in the night go pretty quick that one finds it challenging to follow the sequences. The lack of sound red-herring characters you expect in a thriller make it less suspenseful.

Verdict
Gautham has successfully carved chapters of the third episode in a police officer’s life, giving it a premise similar to the first two, building a fresh structure on top and fitting Ajith perfectly into it. Get to know Sathyadev, you will like him – Just like you liked Anbuchelvan & Raghavan!

Hari should learn a thing or two from Gautham on how to make a cop film without high decibel screams and flying Sumos. GVM is back, well and truly. :clap
Ajith has a role which suits his age and personality. He underplays throughout the film and it complements the film. Both heroines have played their roles well but Trisha stands out, thanks to the poetically written love track.
Arun Vijay didn't impress me much like what is projected in the media. Just ok, except that split screen sequence in the second half.
Songs were good on screen. Bgm was kinda loud and passable.
On the downside, the film takes some time to settle. But once it does, it moves with a good pace. Overall, GVM has done no harm to his reputation and I would place YA as his second best cop film after VV.
P.S: My mindvoice when I was walking out of the hall - இந்த அஜித் ஃபேன்ஸ் படம் சுமாரா இருந்தாலே சூப்பரும்பானுங்க.. :)

#YennaiArindhaal - 3.5/5. Scintillating. #Ajith's knockout performance as Satyadev IPS, @menongautham well etched characterisation.
#YennaiArindhaal - 3.5/5. @arunvijayno1 , what a role & does full justice. "Adharu Adharu" phone conversation & hero's outburst clinched it
#YennaiArindhaal - 3.5/5. Ajith plays his age & romance with @trishtrashers sparkling. She has that screen presence. Anushka is sweet.
#YennaiArindhaal 3.5/5. Top class technical work - Dan's grim mood inducing camera goes with @Jharrisjayaraj bgm & music (Mazhai Vara).
#YennaiArindhaal - 3.5/5 Minus - 1st half slow, when u compare with 2nd half. Reminds u of VV & KK.
#YennaiArindhaal - 3.5/5. what worked 4 me the best was the undercurrent & tension between the hunter (Satyadev) & hunted (Victor) & climax

Ajith Starrer is a Classy, Mass Entertainer from Gautham Menon
On watching "Yennai Arindhaal", the first thing that will come to you mind is "what a comeback by Gautham Vasudev Menon". The director, who failed to impress the public in his last few attempts, made sure that his latest flick will rule the box office.
"Yennai Arindhaal" is a typical Gautham Menon movie with all its nuances. A well written script, highly-engaging dialogues and sequences, and some well-defined performances make the latest Ajith starrer a delight to watch.
"Yennai Arindhaal" revolves around IPS officer Sathyadev (Ajith) and his life from the age of 13, till he is a middle-aged man. The movie shows how each person he meets influences him and how they design his destiny.
The movie begins with the introduction of character Thenmozhi (Anushka Shetty), who is bold and straight forward. She is open about her life and opinions and makes sure they are conveyed in the right sense. On one of her flight journeys, she meets Sathyadev and falls in love with his looks and attitude.
Soon, she decides to let him know about her feelings. But, she wasn't aware of his turbulent past. The movie then goes through a series of flashbacks which narrates Sathyadev's childhood, the special bond which he shared with his father and how losing his father influenced his life.
As a cop, he makes equal number of friends as well as enemies. During one of his operations, he meets Hemanika (Trisha), a well-known dancer who has a different approach to her profession, and little did Sathyadev know about her impact on his life.
It is unfair to reveal the entire story here as you must go and watch it youself. However, the story of "Yennai Arindhaal" can be summed up as a story which takes you through the life of a brilliant cop with several twists and turns that will keep you at the edge of your seats.
Coming to the script of the movie, Gautham made sure that it has everything that a mass entertainer requires. From romance, action, music and dance, the film has everything an Ajith fan dreams of. The dialogues of the movie are also very powerful as they manage to get the audience laugh as well as cry.
Coming to the performance, "Yennai Arindhaal" is all about Ajith. His well-controlled, sophisticated, majestic performance was a sort of makeover for the actor. The actor, who appeared in four different looks, made sure that only he dominates the movie. He managed to redefine the classiness of a Tamil hero
His performance, an emotional yet not-so-dramatic, was one of the major highlights of the film. Gautham Menon also made sure that Ajith stays in the character of Sathyadev in his well-dignified looks and presentation..
Trisha's character in the movie, though for a short span, has it presence though out the film. She woos the audience with her looks, charm and performance and excels as a caring mother, a dignified lover and as an elegant dancer.
Watching Anushka as Themozhi was a drastic but commendable change from her previous performance in "Lingaa". The actress managed to get a good role after a long time and has done justice to it.
If there is one person who has equal presence in the movie as Ajith would be Arun Vijay, who plays the baddie Victor. His character comes into Sathyadev's life when least expected and changes his life forever. Arun also impressed the audience with his excellent performance.
Meanwhile, the character named Revolver Richard is played by Vivek. The character is a cop who assists Sathyadev. You will remember his one-liners long after watching the movie. This character provides a comic relief; when you think the movie is getting melodramatic, the director brings Revolver Richard in and creates a roar of laughter.
Parvathy Nair, who plays Victor's wife has also done a great job. Other actors like Baby Anikha, Naaser, Daniel Balaji and Ashish Vidhyarthi have also done their part well.
Harris Jayaraj's music is the soul of the movie. It carried the right emotions to the audience and thereby created the whole feel of the movie.
Cinematography by Dan Macarthur is another important aspect of the film. One thing that is commendable is that Dan is a director's cinematographer as he made sure that the movie does not have any over-the-top cinematographic moments. He chose to stay with narrative of the movie with some subtle colouring.
Editing by Antony kept the audience attentive throughout the film.Special mention has to be given to stunt choreographer Silva for making some realistic stunt sequences that adds to the mass feel of the movie.
Overall, "Yennai Arindhaal" is one of the classiest movies of Ajith and Gautham Vasudev Menon is back with a bang with this entertainer.

Ajith excels in engaging cop thriller
There is a thin line that seperates a good and a bad guy. When circumstances push you to the brink, which are you on?”, is the theme of Gautam Vasudev Menon’s much awaited Ajith starrer, Yennai Arindhaal.
Chronicling the life of Satyadev(Ajith), the screenplay moves back and forth from present day to his battles and love life in the past and the mystery unfolds in a seamless manner. A young, bearded Satyadev is shown as a dreaded gangster, spending his time in jail. He befriends Victor (Arun Vijay in a riveting performance) and flees prison. After acclimatizing with Victor’s aides, it is revealed that Satyadev was working undercover and nabs a big network, thereby antagonizing Victor.
There is a romantic track with Trisha, a single mother who is killed under mysterious circumstances. The perils of a cop’s life and how the murderers are nabbed down forms the rest of the story.
The first half is racy and Dan McArthur’s camerawork is a sheer delight. The songs by Harris Jayaraj are already chartbusters but the background music is loud at places and could have been worked out better. Anushka Shetty also plays a pivotal role and has the meatier role of the heroines and so does Trisha’s daughter, who is adopted by Satyadev. There also an episode about illegal organ trade, which is an integral part of the story in the latter half. A father-son, father-daughter bond that tugs heartstrings.
Dialogues add spark to the film and so do of the fight sequences. There are plenty of gunshot exchanges, which does get weary after a point and the running time of the movie stretches to three hours, which are one of the few sore points in the film. Also the movie has traces of the director’s previous films, Kaaka Kaaka and Vettaiyadu Villayadu (cop films again). Ajith looks dapper and delivers a knockout performance and so does Arun Vijay, who shares almost equal screen space.
With recent big budget-big star movies disappointing,
Gautam Vasudev Menon bounces back to winning ways with this action thriller, which has a winner written all over it. Ajith’s large legion of fans are sure to have a treat with this one.

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2015/feb/05ajith.jpgThe backdrop of Yennai Arindhaal is new and the plot is engaging, but the characters, the situation, and even the dialogues are reminiscences of director Gautham Menon's previous cop films, writes S Saraswathi.
After the spectacular success of Kaakha Kaakha with Suriya and Kamal Haasan's Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu, director Gautham Menon teams up with Ajith for yet another cop film.
Titled, Yennai Arindhaal, the film follows an almost similar template -- more like a mashup of the two films.
Ajith plays an honest cop, Sathyadev, whose passion and integrity for his job gets his fiance Hemanika (Trisha Krishnan) killed.
The film chronicles the life of young Sathyadev from his teenage years to his life as a cop, an unmarried father and eventually the retribution.
The narrative alternates between the present, wherein he is trying to prevent Thenmozhi (Anushka Shetty) from getting killed, and his tragic past with Hemanika.
As a school-going youngster, Sathyadev's mother wants him to be a doctor. But destiny has other plans for him. The senseless death of his father at the hands of a gangster motivates him to join the police force.
Typical to Gautham's cop characters, there is a mature, understated, yet menacing quality to Sathyadev.
Even without appearing to do so, the director has cleverly catered to Ajith's mass hero image.
Sathyadev befriends a dangerous gangster, Victor (Arun Vijay) to get to his boss. The charade finally ends with the boss's death leaving Victor furious at his friend's betrayal. Victor is arrested and sentenced to jail, but he vows revenge. Life moves on.
During one of his investigations, Ajith meets the hugely pregnant Hemanika (Trisha), and drives her to the hospital. Coincidentally, they meet again a couple of years later and he is introduced to her young daughter Isha (Baby Anikha). Sathyadev promptly falls in love with both. They get engaged, but the night before the wedding, Hemanika is brutally murdered.
A distraught Sathyadev, has to sift through his long list of enemies to find the killer, but he is worried about getting himself killed and leaving Isha all alone in the world. He decides to quit his job.
How he eventually comes face to face with Hemanika's killer forms the rest of the story.
The first half moves briskly, introducing many new characters and situations, keeping you totally engrossed, but the second goes off track and lacks momentum.
Ajith as usual takes center stage, but Arun Vijay is equally impressive. He looks extremely tough and fit, in contrast with Ajith, who seems rather overweight. But there is no mistaking Ajith's magnetic screen presence; he can drive the audience to frenzy with just a smile.
Anushka has little to do, but the beautiful chemistry shared by the lovely Trisha and charming Ajith, definitely works big time.
Music by Harris Jayaraj and cinematography by Australian filmmaker Dan Macarthur do the director proud, but the editing could have been better.
The backdrop is new, and the plot engaging but the characters, the situation, and even the dialogues are reminiscences of his previous cop films.
With Yennai Arindhaal, director Gautham Menon perhaps completes his cop trilogy.

BO OFFICE REPORTS - YENNAI ARINDHAAL 1ST DAY WORLD BOX OFFICE COLLECTION
Ajith Kumar’s Yennai Arindhaal opened up grander than the reported screens. Initially, it was mentioned that it will have a TN release in just 500 screens, but gradually struck the 582 mark on the spur of moment. This is an authentic report from one of the leading film traders of the globe and the first day collection of this film is as follows.
TN - 12.80 CRORES – 582 SCREENS
KERALA – 3.75CRS 110 SCREENS
KARNATAKA – 2.54 CR 80SCREENS
REST OF INDIA – 1.36CRORES 50 SCREENS
OVERSEAS - 9.75CRORES 450 SCREENS
TOTAL – 30.20 CRORES APPROXIMATELY
It is worth mentioning that Ajith Kumar films usually are bound to action and violence that many female audiences wouldn’t prefer to watch. But with Gautham Vasudev Menon adding more romance, emotions and family elements to this film, it has drawn family audiences into the theatres. With the shows house packed for the entire weekend, we can expect Yennai Arindhaal to scale the great heights in box office. For now, it becomes the second biggest opener in the recent times with Lingaa collecting 37Crores and Vikram’s I with 27Crores and Kaththi – 23 Crores approximately on the first day worldwide.

With YA crossing 100C, Thala will have 4 movies in the 100C list. The most by any. Thala is proving again and again that he is the best and the biggest star of the current bunch by setting a new bench mark. Try beating it.

Unbelievable story narration, very intense tamil movie in a very very long time. Hats off to Actor Ajith , to pick this genre. GVM  Superb Movie ! Having said that , I am not sure this movie is palatable for masses.
Another clear winner for 2015. Still shaking my head in disbelief so many nuance executed to perfection. Very sleek movie Just WOW!! School kids needs marks, not for grown up adult movie :) its 5/5 for me .
Sir Ajith is in completely in a different league all together :yessir:
One -ve HJ was either drunk or pissed off during RR ? felt like I was in some heavy metal concert utter nonsense.

'Yennai Arindhaal' review: Ajith Kumar as the cop, the gangster, the father and the lover will win you over
Rating: 4/5
'Yennai Arindhaal' is a step forward from Gautham Menon's previous decade's cop films 'Kaakha Kaakha' and 'Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu', but first things first, Arun Vijay's performance in this particular film puts his entire filmography to shame. From his hairstyle to the very last scene, he is terrific.
The trailer and the music give away a slice of the plot yet 'Yennai Arindhaal' has a lot to give the unsuspecting audience a space for whistle worthy moments. This is also why this film stands apart from what Ajith has done so far.
Sathyadev (Ajith) is a cop every common man would want to see, a gentleman every person wishes to be with, a danger to those who plan things beyond the law. Within the boundaries of the film he's protecting Anushka from the tyrants of the organ trade. Meanwhile a significant episode in his life reveals the romantic trance between the hardcore cop and the ever pretty Trisha. Trisha has a really cool name. Hemanika. The name's an instant hit. Her character, similarly, is appealing.
Just when Sathyadev's team is about to shoot down a goon, Sathya receives a text message from Hemanika, the strong cop has a smile on his face now. The guns go back to their places. The goon survives. Love does strange things to people. To Sathya, as well.
Action scenes, especially the hand-to-hand combat/ knife fight bring out a certain sense of visible anger from Ajith and Arun Vijay. Points to the makers here, they are realistic, if they were over the top, they would have taken an unwanted turn. The knife fight also reminds us of Cheran in 'Yuddham Sei'. Three swift motions and the enemy is on the floor asking for water.
Harris Jayaraj and Thamarai are partners for this hellishly exquisite soundtrack album. 'Yennai Arindhaal' is after all Harris and Gautham's big reunion, the outcome, though, seems like they weren't separated at all. Gautham's dialogues are to the point, sometimes, hinting at old jokes. Subtle humor that floats below the surface works well.
Anushka just doesn't know what's happening, mostly skating on a slippery slope, she's a fish out of water. The film struggles initially until Ajith arrives on screen. Oh, and no garish introduction scene for Ajith. Thumbs up to Gautham for that.
Many good things have fallen into the pot of 'Yennai Arindhaal' starting from Ajith but the best thing about the film is Arun Vijay. He delivers a bad-man speech akin to Daniel Balaji's soliloquy in 'Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu'. Outstanding! 20 years in Tamil cinema and not once have we seen Arun Vijay in an embraceable role? Victor is the answer.
