On the eve of ‘Kaththi’ audio launch, Indiaglitz has caught up with the young & exuberant music composer, the pulse of current generation, Anirudh. The guy is as nervous as a student who is awaiting board results, but confident of crossing one more milestone.


How excited are you to be a part of Vijay – A.R.M’s movie?

I’m blessed and feel extremely happy to have associated with such a big project in my 6th film itself. This project is so close to my heart and I have delivered something special.

So far, you’ve worked with the people with people who were within your comfort zones (Dhanush & Sivakarthikeyan), and for the first time you have taken a biggie; have you felt any pressure?

I was normal while signing the project, but the pressure was there in my sub-conscious mind, and I was determined to fulfil the mass expectations of Vijay’s fan base. I have done my best for the movie, and eagerly waiting to hear the response from you guys (critcs & listeners).

How did Vijay respond to the album?

Both Vijay & A.R. Murugadoss has got great words as response to my work, and all I can assure you is; I have gone an extra mile to dish out a unique experience for the listeners than I did in my earlier movies. As a team, we are all extremely positive about the outcome of the album.


How did you convince Vijay to sing for ‘Selfie Pulla’?

The very moment I signed the dotted lines for this project, I thought of roping Vijay to croon a song. After getting the nod from him; we were thinking of what genre it should be. I was on a trip to Malaysia & Singapore, and I saw lots of people taking ‘Selfie’ photos. Though it was a bit funny, it gave me an idea to compose a track based on that. That’s how Selfie Pulla emerged, and the song will be slightly different from Vijay’s armor.

Are there any melodious track in the album?

Yes, predominantly all the tracks do carry a pinch of melody quotient, and we have roped in the best talents across the Nation for this album.

The theme music ‘Sword of Destiny’ is already a big hit; how did you nail it?

Actually, it was A. R. Murugadoss’s idea to compose a mass theme track for Vijay, and wanted to present it as a lifetime theme material for ‘Ilayathalapthi’. Initially, we were contemplating about when to release the ‘Sword of Destiny’ track and eventually zeroed it on to get it along with the motion picture teaser itself. I could see many people already using it as a ringtone, and I can imagine the mass reception for the track in the fillm. Because, I have played around the theme to highlight Vijay’s avatar throughout the movie.

Like, ‘Sword of Destiny’, I have composed another track for the Villain, Neil Nithin Mukesh, ‘Bad Eyes’ and I expect both the tracks to elevate the mood of scenes to another level.

Indiaglitz wishes the most exciting composer a tremendous success with ‘Kaththi’ and hopefully he will continue to scale more peaks.

‘Kaththhi’ is voted as the most expected movies & the album of this year from various polls conducted on our site. So far, we all know, Vijay has crooned a song ‘Selfie Pulla’ and he is quietly making it a habit to sing one track of his movies in the recent time. The big news is; Sunidhi Chauhan, who voiced for Darling Dambakku in ‘Maan Karate’ in Anirudh’s composition has sung along with Vijay for selfie Pulla. Selfie pulla-Vijay's voice modulation in selfie pulla is mindblowingly good stuff. ESP the shiver in 'are you readya ' & modulations for 'tera tera byte ' 👏 He's come a long way since his ayayo alamelu days & even back then he was a much better Singer than the likes of Danush & Simbu.

Aathi - I've probably underestimated ANirudh as a MD. Close your eyes and listen to this song. It's as blissful as having a cuppa in a cold winter's night. The guitar & rap is just wow. Magical.

Paalam - okayish

Sword of destiny - best of Vj 's theme from all of his 57 movies.

Bad eyes - again I think I've given Anirudh less credit than what he deserves. The use of flute & veena is amazing

Nee yaro - Jesudas voice is soulstirring but something felt off about this song. I'd probably connect better with it with visuals.

Pakkam Vandhu - another instant favourite. I've always been impressed by Adhi's work but his standards went up another notch with this song. 👏

In my own humble opinion, the ranking are as follows...

1. Selfie Pulla - Honestly wasn't very impressed with Ani's rough track but Vijay elevated it to the next level with his delightful singing. He does it so effortlessly, in an offbeat way. Wonderful stuff.

2. Pakkam Vandhu - The beat get stuck in your head and the lyrics are noteworthy. Another hit by the Ani/Aadhi gang.

3. Aathi - Might tie with Pakkam Vandhu for no.2 after more listens/visuals. Interesting that Ani decides to use the Sword of Destiny theme in a duet. Impressive nonetheless.

4. Nee Yaaro - Jesudas and his evergreen voice. Magical.

5. Paalam - Nothing much to say about this. Average.

Themes - Sword of Destiny was already a hit. The end of the track seems a little awkward though for some reason. And Bad Eyes, although sounds mighty impressive with the flute and veena, doesn't sound like a villain track. Sorts of reminds me of Wiggle Wiggle strangely.

Overall - 4/5. Selfie Pulla will undoubtedly be the chartbuster. Pakkam Vandhu/Aathi - critics' choice? Definitely the best album of Vijay in recent times and multitudes better than HJ's Thuppakki (though have to credit him for that theme).

PS : Can't wait for the teaser. The songs give nothing much away regarding the story.

Summary :Kaththi soundtrack is Anirudh's decisive win with an interesting melange of tunes and an efficient choice of singers. Selfie Pulla has everything it needs to be a smashing chartbuster.
*. PAKKAM VANTHU; Singers: Anirudh, Hip Hop Tamizha - With its absurd lyrics, funky beats, a fabulously enjoyable tune and brilliantly constructed interludes, this track is an absolute winner. Especially Anirudh’s interlude from 2:33 to 3:00 is an instant earworm and makes for a catchy ditty!
*.PAALAM; Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Shwetha Mohan - Shwetha Mohan dominates this interesting yet passable soundtrack in the album which also marks Shankar Mahadevan’s first collaboration with Anirudh.Paalamis also theonlyokayish, underwhelming track in the album!
*.KATHTHI THEME (The Sword of Destiny) - We have already listened to a major portion of this theme track in the motion poster. The addition here is the rhythmic cantillation of ‘Kaththi’towards the tail end of the song. A good, ringtone-worthy theme track for fans!
*.SELFIE PULLA; Singers: Vijay, Sunidhi Chauhan - A song where ‘chartbuster’ is written all over it. Madhan Karky’s new-age, accessible lyrics, Vijay’s non-chalant, unkempt singing and Anirudh’s templatized tune make this one a razor-sharp decisive track. Bound to rock all radio stations in upcoming days. Our PICK!
*.BAD EYES (Villain Theme) - Anirudh has nailed this one with a motley arrangement of instruments. Classy, elegant use of flute and veena makes this one a nifty listen!
*.NEE YAARO; Singer: KJ Yesudas - There were reports that Vijay plays a youth rebel in the film. Well, the song’s lyrics more or less substantiates the report with its lyrics that lavishly extol ‘Vijay, the hero’. Anirudh has effectively used KJ Yesudoss’s vocals and delivered a sweeping pathos, which will linger long after you finish listening! Our PICK!
*.AATHI; Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Anirudh - Vishal Dadlani and Anirudh have kept the reputation of their previous track (Oh Penne) intact with Aathi.Guitar rules this delightful, swanky track which has an engaging, interesting melange of sounds from Anirudh. A man who never ages. And a man who composes coming-of-age tunes. Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Anirudh¡¯s first time combo for Kaththi, the music is out now. Here is my review of the album, does this knife shine?
Pakkam Vandhu : Singers ¨C Anirudh, Hip Hop Tamizha ( PICK )
The exciting combo of Anirudh and Hip Hop Tamizha come together for their hat trick number ¨C Pakkam Vandhu Konjam Muthangal Thaa. Anirudh starts off the album with a bang, bringing in an innovative fusion of a club tempo with Indian flavors of the pipe and mridangam. Hip Hop Tamizha¡¯s lyrics are lovable in the first half, heart-hitting in the second. The mixing is top notch for this number which will be a regular at the discotheques hereon.
Paalam : Singers ¨C Shankar Mahadevan, Shwetha Mohan
Beginning on the beat of a Punjabi parade, this track moves onto a Carnatic tune and finally ends with a kuthu rush. Anirudh tries to infuse too many Indian genres into the same song which ostensibly take away the essence on the whole. Shankar Mahadevan and Shwetha Mohan cash in with their lively vocals, yet Paalam is a step below the other songs in the album.
Kaththi Theme ( The Sword of Destiny )
An energizing theme which is short and superb. However, the ¡®Kaththi Draw¡¯ bit at the end could have been done away with.
Selfie Pulla : Singers ¨C Vijay, Sunidhi Chauhan ( PICK )
Though Selfie Pulla drives itself on a tune which is quite familiar for a ¡®Vijay¡¯ soundtrack, the star is in dashing form in front of the mic. His voice modulation is on another level, which makes this track such an enjoyable listen. Madhan Karky¡¯s lyrics propel the song even higher for this is one track which will go on to be one of the biggest hits in 2014. Facebook and Twitter, likes and shares aplenty!
Bad Eyes ( Villain Theme )
Anirudh once again grinds a snazzy beat with an Indian instrument, this time the veena. The result is an astounding theme. Kickass!
Nee Yaaro : Singer ¨C KJ Yesudas ( PICK )
In hindsight, Anirudh¡¯s peppy tunes usually appeal to a bigger audience, but the lynchpin of his albums are the melodies which turn out to be a delight in the long run. Nee Yaaro finds its place on those lines, a soulful rendition with a simple tune which will create the necessary aura in the film.
Aathi : Singer ¨C Vishal Dadlani, Anirudh ( PICK )
After the success of their first song together, Vishal Dadlani and Anirudh join hands for another track which is competent to the first. Anirudh smartly uses the ¡®Sword of Destiny¡¯ theme here as the rap portion, and it does grab the attention pretty quickly. An instantly likable number, sure to climb up the charts soon.
A Vijay film needs chartbusters and Anirudh provides that and more. Kaththi is an album with fresh and enjoyable music which is sure to strike gold with the masses. Putting his talents to best use, Anirudh has churned out an arresting album which will be lapped up by Vijay fans. The celebrations begin, never to cease.

It was only two days back Simbu showered praise on Anirudh’s Kaththi album and called it rocking. Now, Dhanush has called the young composer a rockstar and lavished praise on the album. “The rockstar rocking with his music. Thuppaki intro song was good and no body had any complaints on that. Andha maadhiri. It was understandable when there was no intro song in Naban but indha padathukku vachirukalam !!!

I was expecting yedhir neechal adi / Velai illa pattadhaari kind of intro song ..illaena konjam kastama irruku. Ada indha Aathi paatula appdiyae lyrics maathi intro aakirukalam ...

No complaints on Thuppakki kinda intro song. But when an intro song is forced into a movie, it looks very odd these days. If a movie doesn't demand one, the director should have the guts to foresee an intro song.

Aaathi Selfie Pulla & Pakkam Vandhu are addictive. Super happy that Anirudh's given only 4 main tracks. Thuppakki 's pace was hindered a lot by songs.

Releasing I with Kaththi is a wrong decision as I is going to take a beat in opening due to its high budget(180 Crores?) as of Kaththi is only half the budget of I. Vijay is going to shatter all records for sure. Mark my words! Solo release will save I, Vikram(he desperately needs a hit or else he will be written off) and Aascar as he is in huge debts!

Loved the songs/album. As all have said. ..Vijay has taken that selfie song to completely different levels. I always have felt that Vijay's talent (both in terms of acting and singing) are so underrated. His mass image and popularity tends to overshadow his other skills such as these. Kaththi to me is unlike a typical mass hero movie album. ...and I personally feel this is a welcome change. Hope to see the visuals elevating the songs even more. ..especially when Vijay dances his way to some of the foot tapping music.

Now...I am waiting ...for the teaser.

Kaththi or I if they release on the same day both of the movies will get affected by opening collection as any big movies nowadays depends on only first 2 weeks collections due to wide release strategy. As I is a huge budget movie it will be sold to much higher price to distributors than Kaththi so the collection will be divided and I will be affected more than Kaththi if the movie is good and I know content is important but screenplay is more important than content. So both the movies should have brilliant screenplay to win. Lets hope both movies should win.

And please do not compare Thalaiva with THuppaki as Thalaiva was completely different issue!

Expectations are sky-high as AR Murugadoss and Vijay join hands for the second time with Kaththi after a successful outing in ‘Thupakki’.Kaththi also marks the combination of Murugadoss-Anirudh and Vijay-Samantha for the first time. The audio got released amidst huge excitement from the fans and let us find out how the album has turned out:

Pakkam Vanthu
Singers: Anirudh, Hiphop Tamizha
‘Pakkam Vanthu’ is Anirudh’s show all the way!
The song starts off with the rap portions by Hiphop Tamizha which would take some time to get used to but Anirudh – the composer & the singer dominates the show after 1:00 especially with the interludes woven with funky beats and nadaswaram portions. It is very clear that Anirudh has tried out an experiment with rap-traditional fusion and it sounds highly fresh and innovative. The song raises its tempo as it progresses and ends as one of the ear-catchy numbers of the album.

Paalam
Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Shwetha Mohan
Probably the weakest song in the album!’Paalam’ marks the first time collaboration of Shankar Mahadevan and Anirudh. Except for the sudden bursts of energetic and high-pitched portions, the song falls flat during the remaining portions. Might improve with repeated listening and the visuals!

Kaththi Theme
Instrumental
Hugely popular among youngsters and Vijay fans owing to the teaser that got released several weeks back. ’Kaththi Theme’ is a minute long instrumental that has some caller tune worthy portions followed by miniscule vocal rendition of the title ‘Kaththi’.

Selfie Pulla
Singers: Vijay, Sunidhi Chauhan
Already hugely popular, thanks to the social media and as a result of that we could already see people using the term ‘Let’s take a Selfie Pulla’ everywhere. The title hook of the song is pretty addictive but the song does follow the pattern of songs like ‘Kattu Kattu’ & ‘Gandi Baat’. Vijay does an impressive job with his singing and seems to have had lot of fun while singing this number. The lyrics do focus on the current generation common terms like Instagram, Photoshop much along the lines of Google Google. Get your dancing shoes on!

Bad Eyes
Instrumental
After providing several noteworthy instrumentals in movies like 3, Ethirneechal & VIP, Anirudh continues that trend in ‘Kaththi’ too. The ‘Bad Eyes Villain’ theme music has an interesting array of instruments like veena, pan flute along with an extended fusion of ‘jadhis’. Sounds similar to Snoop Dogg’s ‘Wiggle’ in parts but overall, this track gives an enthralling feel.

Nee Yaaro
Singer: KJ Yesudas
kJ Yesudas is on a roll this year! Having sung a stupendous song in Sigaram Thodu, he is back in action with ‘Nee Yaaro’. Anirudh who had delivered ‘Amma Amma’ in his previous movie has delivered another song in the same mould. The high pitch portions in the charanam are sung with a grace that could be matched by very few behind the microphones. Minimal instruments and more emphasis on lyrics and raagas is a different type of offering from Anirudh.

Aathi
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Anirudh
‘Aathi’ is undoubtedly the best track of the album. Vishal Dadlani’s Tamil diction is a bit off but the tune compensates for that with its instant catchiness. The guitar work that comes during the second interval is Deep Purple-ish and deserves applause. The ‘Un Azhagil En Idhayam’ hook is certainly the high point of the song. Anirudh excels in his attempt at soft rock!

On the whole, ’Kaththi’ has an interesting collection of several chartbusters along with experimental tracks and instrumentals. The peppy and the instantly likable tunes would work wonders for the movie if they are used properly.
