'Kaththi' film release: 5 Tamil outfit activists arrested for vandalizing Chennai cinema halls

CHENNAI: The Chennai police on Tuesday arrested five members of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam for hurling crude petrol bombs at two theatres here in the early hours on Tuesday. The members of the Tamil outfit were protesting against the release of the Tamil movie 'Kaththi,' starring Vijay and Samantha and directed by A R Murugadoss.

Several Tamil groups had been protesting against the release of the movie as one of the producers was allegedly related to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse. The Tamil groups believe that Rajapakse was responsible for the deaths of several innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka towards the end of the civil war in that country in 2009.

The producers had struck an agreement with the protesting outfits on Monday night for the smooth release of the movie. They agreed to remove the logo from the publicity material of the movie.

However, some people, who covered their face with clothes, hurled petrol bombs at Sathyam Cinemas on the Thiru Vi Ka Salai and Woodlands Theatre on the Royapettah High Road. The windowpanes of the theatres were damaged in the attacks. No one was injured.

Following this, the Anna Salai police and the Royapettah police registered separate cases and arrested Thathai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam cadres Jayaprakash, Jayakumar, Vasu Devan, Appu and Krishna. They were remanded in judicial custody.

The Tamil Nadu Theatre Association on Tuesday said it will screen the movie. It will be released in 440 theatres in the state on Diwali.

After the release of the movie was cleared, the advance bookings for Kaththi are gradually being started in all theaters across the state. The screen count is likely to be more than 440 in TN.
Online ticketing sites are seeing a very heavy load as tickets for the first 5 days are being sold out like hot cakes. In some theaters, tickets for the first day are only being sold in counters and the crowd at the complexes is huge.
Main complexes in and around Chennai city like Sathyam, Escape, Luxe, AGS to name a few have already sold out a major chunk of their shows for the first few days while the other main complexes are expected to start their booking plans anytime now.

Kaththi review - Movie is sharp as its title
After Thuppakki, Vijay and AR Murugadoss have come together with sky high expectations from fans and critics. Kaththi is about Jeevanandam and Kathiresan, both enacted by Vijay in a dual role. The movie is a case of mistaken identity embroils an escaped convict in a fight against a large corporation intent on seizing a village's land.
Vijay
Kaththi is the perfect follow-up to Thuppakki. Vijay has surpassed himself in Kaththi with the right amount of action, comedy, and emotions. Vijay has shown minimal differences between the two characters with minor mannerisms in eye movements for Jeevanandam. Vijay breezes through in his dance movements. Vijay will earn big applause for his dialogue delivery in the scene where he does a press meet. Vijay will steal the audience hearts in the final scenes akin to Thuppakki final scenes. Vijay looks as young as ever with his interesting mannerism and body language are top-notch. Vijay's interval punch line will make the fans go berserk.
AR Murugadoss
Murugadoss' sincerity and originality throughout the movie should be applauded. The director takes up the plight of farmer's' struggle in increasingly globalized world. Instead of using this concept as a backdrop, Murugadoss has taken the time to portray the struggle and loading with statistical points. He even makes a cameo to exhibit his angst.Murugadoss walks the fine balance by keeping the masala elements in check without depriving the Vijay fans of mass elements. Kaththi's careful detailing in every scene is evident. AR Murugadoss' screenplay is sprinkled with intelligent ideas throughout. The case in point is the scene where Vijay visualizes a blueprint with fantastic BGM support and flipping of coins to take on loads of goons.
On the downside, Murugadoss has gone a bit overboard in showing all big corporate leaders as villains and city dwellers as people with no compassion. Such cinematic liberties to make the villains as formidable while elevating the hero is not uncommon in movie industries.
Casting
Samantha doesn't have a huge role in terms of number of dialogues. But, she is in most of the frames and helps the hero in helping his cause. It is finally a good break for Samantha after "Naan Ee". Neil Nitin Mukesh has done a great job in critical scenes and throwing some challenges to the protagonist. Sathish's comedy timing has worked out well and looks convincing when delivering comic one-liners as well as providing support on serious scenes. Every one of the old people shown in the movie is carefully selected to look the part. Their helplessness in eyes will make you feel sorry for them.
Anirudh - Music
After missing the target on the songs department, Anirudh has comeback strongly with electrifying re-recording to help spike up Vijay's heroism. The way Anirudh uses the main theme music with interesting variations is pure genius and will earn claps for Vijay in the theatre. Selfie Pulla immediately after interval is a riot. The "Paalam" songs should be completely removed and serves as a speed-breaker in the second half. Other songs provide the right relief points during the proceeding.
Technical Departments
George C. Williams' camerawork blends in well with the story. He has worked in tandem with cosutume designers and art directors to ensure there is a sense of harmony in colours. The art direction is good and makes you sit up with minimalist approach as seen in the song "Aathi" with fallen pillars and statues. Sreekar Prasad's scissors help immensely in keeping the "Kaththi" sharp. Action sequences involve beating up many dozens of people by Vijay. One should appreciate the director and stunt choreographers for showing such incredulous scenes in a believable manner.
Final Word
The movie deserves a lot of credit for taking a social cause and delivering it sincerely with just the right amount of commercial elements. This is a movie Vijay, AR Murugadoss and entire Kaththi team should be proud of...Go, Watch Kaththi!

KATHTHI MOVIE REVIEW
Diwali and big star films go hand in hand. And this Diwali, it's Vijay. After a plethora of problems, conflicts and confusions, Kaththi finally arrived today to a thundering response, sure to begin on a bang. AR Murugadoss joins hands with Vijay for the second time post Thuppakki, does Kaththi match up to that? Read on.
While Thuppakki was more of an action thriller, Kaththi has a strong emotional side to it. Though the first 40 minutes are a big bore, the film picks up right from an intriguing fight sequence between Vijay and two girls. Vijay's tryst as Jeevanandham is one of the high points of the movie, as it deals with a hard-hitting issue in the best possible way. Post the interval, the content takes centrestage with well researched facts and figures. AR Murugadoss saves his best for the end, firing on all cylinders with his excellent dialogue writing.
Yes, Vijay plays a dual role in Kaththi and his performance quotient in the film has surely doubled up. Be it the trendy Kathiresan or the soft Jeevanandham, this guy is a revelation. His acts in the emotional scenes are on another level, and connect quickly with the audience. Dance and fights are something which come easily to the star, and that continues in Kaththi too. Though Kaththi does have a tinge of his earlier films where he saves the people on his own, it is distinct in its own way. Samantha as Vijay's pair has been used effectively at the right places. Her role in the film is compact, offering enough space to perform as well as be the glam doll. Neil Nitin Mukesh is a thumping villain here, dubbing his lines to near perfection too. Just like Vidyut, we won't mind seeing him in more movies down south. The rest of the cast including Sathish are aptly placed, mainly the grandfathers who have worked along with Vijay.
Technically, Kaththi is a storm. The film possesses stunning visuals thanks to George C. Williams. Editing by Sreekar Passed is neat, yet a few trims in the first half would have stepped on the pedal. The art direction is surreal, and the stunts do bring up the anti, especially the coin flip fight sequence.
Kaththi is no 3 hour entertainer to go enjoy, have dinner and go to bed. The film deals with a deep social issue. The audience here, are more like the media in the film. They will not care if this kind of an issue is shown on TV, written in a book or spoken about publicly. But with a star like Vijay at the forefront, this film is sure to turn heads. The silver lining here is Murugadoss, who walks the tightrope between being preachy and being massy, with absolute elegance!
Verdict : This knife shines on one side, smiles on the other.

Watched first show in Bangalore Lavanya theater. I'll reserve my detailed comments for later but all I can say now is this is the kind of Vijay I ve wanted to see onscreen for a long long time..and I've posted this a couple of times too. Vijay the "STAR" is completely overshadowed by Vijay the "PERFORMER". To me, this is his best performance till date...perfect blend of class with some mass elements. ARM..thanks a million.

Palakkad: A youth, who was thrilled and excited after watching the Diwali release `Katthi', had a fatal fall after he climbed on top of Ilayathalabathi Vijay's cut-out to offer `pal abishekam' (bathing an idol with milk).

The deceased has been identified as Unni from Vadakancherry. He slipped from the top of the flexboard and fell down.

Straight of the sheath, Kaththi is sharp most of the time, but not always. AR Murgadoss has come out with a film which has a neat social message, packaged well with mass entertainment elements. Vijay carries the film in a tricky dual role, which brings out the star in him whether doing comedy, romance, songs, fights and emotional scenes.

If the Vijay-ARM combo’s previous film Thuppakki was a racy, stylish action thriller, Kaththi is more an emotional film with a mix of hard -hitting social messages. The director has touched upon relevant social issues like farmer suicide, ground water reserves being gobbled by multi-national cola companies, water scarcity, TRP hungry media who are only interested in sensationalising news, corporates taking over the economy and how macroeconomic policies have created a huge difference between villages and urban areas.

Vijay is in a dual role as Kathiresan a jailbird and Jeevanantham a communist and a social crusader. Kathiresan and his friend (Satish) only believe in making a fast buck while Jeevanantham is fighting for a group of villagers in a remote village whose agricultural land is being illegally taken over by a soft drink corporate chief (Neil Nitin Mukesh) . Somewhere along there is a swap and Kathiresan finds himself leading the fight for the old men against the evil corporate, while Jeevanantham languishes in the jail?

The trouble with the film is its first half which moves at a sluggish pace. The film takes its own time to start moving, while the actual plot starts developing only post interval and ends with a stunning climax. The songs hamper the pace and placement is jarring to the narrative. One minute after interval the hit song “Selfie Pulla” appears, result is that some of the audiences rush back to the canteen!

But on the whole Murgadoss’s screenplay especially the long Vijay monologue in the climax where he hits out at corporates with an agenda is very good. When asked by his sister to define a communist, Jeevanantham’s dialogue -“ Namma pasikku mele sapiduru oru idly koode namolade kedayathu” is poignant.

Technically, the film is rich. Anirudh’s music and BGM reaches a new level with ‘Aathi’ being the pick of the lot. George C Williams’s camera is eye catching; especially the way he has made the Chennai airport look so good on screen. Anal Arasu’s action scenes are well choreographed especially the coin scene.

You can’t take your eyes of Vijay, he is fantastic as the flamboyant Kathiresan and the sober Jeevanantham. Samantha is cute and does what is expected from a heroine in a hero oriented mass movie. Satish as hero friend provides the laughter. Neil Nitin Mukesh with perfect lip sync and dubbing as the villain impresses.

On the whole, Kaththi may not be in the same league as Thuppaki, but still is a well made entertainer with a powerful message.

Director A R Murugadoss’ Kaththi attempts to highlight the pathetic condition of farmers, whose lives are being destroyed by callous multinational corporations, says S Saraswathi.

Amidst much controversy, allegations and political drama, Vijay’s Kaththi made it to the theatres, as scheduled, this Diwali.

Much to the relief of his fans, all matters were resolved in time and within minutes tickets were sold out in several theatres across Chennai.

A R Murugadoss and Vijay have proved that they can be a powerful combination. Their previous film together, Thuppakki, was the biggest blockbuster of 2012.

The musical brilliance of Anirudh Ravichander kick-started the celebrations a few weeks ago. All the songs became the rage with Pakkam Vanthu and Selfie Pulla becoming overnight chartbusters.

Despite the overload of commercial elements, director Murugadoss’ Kaththi brings to the fore a very critical issue.

The film deals with the destruction of agricultural lands by powerful multinational corporations, destroying the livelihood of farmers.

With no land, no water, no financial resources and drowning in debt, thousands of farmers have ended their lives.

Jeevanandham (Vijay) is desperately trying to save his village from being swallowed up by a powerful Cola company belonging to an industrialist played by Neil Nitin Mukesh.

Kathiresan (also Vijay) is a petty thief who escapes from jail. Together with his friend Ravi (Sathish), also a thief, he plans to leave the country. But a chance meeting with Ankita (Samantha) at the airport changes his mind.

He decides to stick around long enough to win her affections, but gets caught up in Jeevanandham’s fight.

Kathiresan witnesses some men shooting at Jeevanandham one night and rushes him to hospital. Though he saves Jeevanandham’s life, he decides to take advantage of the situation by stealing his identity.

Jeevanandham is caught by the police and is back in jail. Meanwhile, Kathiresan is mistaken for Jeevanandham and though it is fun in the beginning, he soon understands the gravity of the situation.

The rest of the film is all about how Kathiresan eventually saves his village.

Vijay plays two totally different characters, excelling at both. Kathiresan, the fun loving Romeo, who can dance, do comedy and effortlessly bash up fifty bad guys, and Jeevanandham, the sedate social activist. Murugadoss has cleverly catered to Vijay’s fans and at the same time maintained some rationale.

It’s a decent Tamil debut for the dashing Hindi actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who in his stylish suits is a far cry from the usually crude antagonists so popular in Tamil cinema.

All Samantha had to do in the film is smile and look pretty. This was enough to thrill the audience, who greeted her with wolf whistles in every scene.

The camerawork of George C Williams of Raja Rani fame is impressive. Editor Sreekar Prasad could have done away with some of the endless fight sequences and speeded up the first half, which seems totally unrelated to the latter half.

Regardless of the excessive masala moments catering to Vijay's mass hero image, the film does convey an important social message.

This, coupled with the stunning music by Anirudh, definitely makes A R Murugadoss’ Kaththi worth a watch.

Summary :Overall, Kaththi makes a sweeping statement on the most alarming issue in the country without going over-the-top : 'Agriculture' in a neatly packaged commercial drama!
As of yesterday morning, uncertainty gloomed over the release of Kaththi in Tamil Nadu. But, today, we witnessed the film earlier than everyone else, except few parts in the world. After the tumultuous last few days, Kaththi hits over 450 screens in Tamil Nadu alone with the compromise between the protesters that the logo of Lyca will not be present in the film¡¯s digital prints and publicity materials. And yes, the production house has kept the word. They have replaced Lyca Productions with ¡®Gnanam Presents¡¯, Lyca¡¯s erstwhile name. Gnanam Foundation was founded by Subaskaran Allirajah in 2010 and it was under this name they bankrolled Cheran ¨C Sneha starrer Pirivom Santhippom.
Kaththi makes a profound impact to tell the public a burning issue largely under-discussed in the national media! ARM and Vijay¡¯s second in a row and to give you the hint, you just need to forget Thuppakki from your mind to see what Kaththi has really offered in the cracker day. The expectations being sky high and as a maker, to subside hunger for the fans is always a bigger task and ARM has just made it easy and versatile.
Kaththi makes two characters to speak out loud; Kathiresan and Jeevanandham are two sides of the sharp knife and is handled with no cuts by the director through his explicable screenplay. The first half seems a bit lazy and slow paced but it starts well past 45 minutes into the runtime. Kathiresan escapes prison and makes him listed in the wanted chart following hands with pal Sathish and plans out an escape to Bangkok. Meantime he happens to meet Ankitha(Samantha) and falls for her at the first sight and takes it smooth and impressive for aromantic track. Samantha has travelled through the film supporting him which will be a bit relief for the female roles who is in search of a space to justify and exhibit their roles. Sathish has been impressive and getting the experience to handle single comedy tracks and has farely won the audience with his timing dialogues.
Vijay has certainly changed his way and has come out perfectly let it Jeevanandham the silent revolutionist who has shown a different feel to the character and made it stronger and stronger with his restrained dialogues. One Powerful statement can be a proof¡°namma pasiku mela sapdura oru idly kuda nammalodathu kedaiyathu¡±well executed punch-line about communism. Kathiresan has taken time to showcase of what he is capable and the first half he gives his leisure time to enjoy the comedy, romance and ends the fun with the interval block with a message to Neil Nitin Mukesh I am Waiting.
The second half is the real timer and every clock striking one, there are flavors of entertainment and thrill. Kathiresan bursts out his anger for the social cause understanding the pain of what a farmer suffers in the interiors of the state. Kathiresan takes one step higher to make the people in the city to understand what pain it takes for a person who firmly believes in agriculture in his life. Kathiresan studies the complete history of the exploitation by the corporate to the villagers and how he overcomes the mighty corporate with his aged brigade is the scene byscene thriller throughout the second half. The replacement of Jeevanandham by Kathiresan is not a risk taken and all it took was violence with brilliance to overcome the bad ending to tell the public what is good. Some real astonishing show from the old age brigade formed by kathiresan and certainly creams out real applause from the audience. Neil Nitin Mukesk comes in as the corporate business man and walks it smartly with his rough character and fits in the cup. What a con Kathiresan offers to the farmers and how he justifies the replacement he made for jeevanandham who is well built as a social activist is Kaththi in short.
AR Murugadoss¡¯s subtle references to various scams in the country shows his guts. He manages to provoke the emotions in the common man with his searing dialogues. His digs at 2G scam, capitalism, airline scam reveal the ugly contradiction and the surreal world we live in. Murugadoss has once proved his mettle with his razor-sharp, thought-provoking dialogues.
Briefing the technical aspects cinematographer George C Williams has been impressive and his good flow continues with ARM team. Anirudh has rocked it again with some new flavors for Vijay mentioning ¡°Selfie Pulla¡± has already given enough credits from fans. Perhaps the song placement seemed quick and hasty which loses pace.

I watched the movie in a remote theatre in Kanyakumari district which is hardly 2 kms far from Kerala border. So the theatre was filled with malayalee crowd and was filled with chants praising Vijay and pulling down, surprisingly not his arch rival, but Suriya. And his latest outing only helped matters.

The film is a well conceived brainchild of ARM. He has made the best possible mixture of commercial cinema and creating social awareness. He has done that in the past with Ramana but has gone a step further with Kaththi. I had my fears when I saw the trailer. I was not sure if today's audience will lap up such a subject. But seeing the reaction of the crowd yesterday I am left with no such doubts. The mass suicide scene made the whole hall go silent for a minute or two and the noise level only reached it high levels when the goon lays his hand on Kathiresan's shoulders in the pre interval sequence. Many kudos to ARM for making a meaningful film with a star who is often projected as an entertainer.

Vijay, as Kaththi and Jeeva, has shown good variations among the two roles with his body language and voice modulations. Wish this was his first film in a dual role. More than all his dance moves and action, which he is always known and praised for, his acting skills and dialogue delivery hits a new high with this film. Press meet scene, that angst after he realizes the truth behind the thumb prints, the subtle reaction that he and NNM share in the climax are the ones to watch out for.

Samantha gets another forgettable role. But like she tweeted she has finally managed to get a hit in Tamil and I guess that's all she wanted.

NNM and Satheesh play their role to perfection and the latter has emoted well too. Credit to ARM here for choosing an young artist in Satheesh to pair with Vijay. The combo looks fresh.

Anirudh has given Vijay fans a theme which will stay for a while and the bgm during action sequences are terrific. Bgm for last few Vijay movies were really good and this one is no exception.

Personally, I liked the film more than Thuppakki. Ironically, we sold one of our fields only on Monday because we don't get the labour these days and it is very tough to maintain and manage paddy fields. Watching the film I could manage only a wry smile. :)

P.S: The theatre I watched is in TN border but still the Lyca logo was shown. It drew the biggest applause after ITV and ARM's names. Lyca couldn't have asked for more.
