^ Navarasa Nayagan Karthik....Not surprised that you couldnt identify him....As for the movie, I will be looking out for Dhanush and Karthik in this. Dhanush is riding a huge success wave. While his recent ventures have not been completely satisfactory, his performances in them have been nothing short of brilliant. I expect the same from Anegan. Truth be said, I dont rate KV Anand that much and I have always found his films to be highly superficial.

Sorry, I misread it. I agree he is an excellent actor! His downfall in the industry is due to his personal habit. If he was sincere to his profession, the so called "Mass" actors of these days wouldn't have cropped up! You know who I mean

KOLLYWOOD star Dhanush is now in Penang shooting for a Tamil movie.

Some of the scenes for the movie Anegan were shot in and outside the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in Church Street, Penang, on Saturday.

It is learnt that some scenes of Dhanush playing football were also filmed at the Penang Free School and in Stewart Lane.

A wedding scene was also shot at a Hindu temple in York Road and some scenes at Chew Jetty.

Some 30 cast and crew members from Chennai arrived in Penang last Thursday.

The heroine in the movie is newcomer Amira, a north Indian.

Anegan is an action thriller directed by K.V. Anand.

Dhanush from Puducherry to Scotland
The shoot of Dhanush-Amyra Dastur starrer Anegan is progressing at full speed, and we hear that almost 90 per cent of the film has already been completed. Now, the team will resume the next schedule from June 2 near Puducherry, where a song and part of the climax will be shot.

Director KV Anand tells us, "We have already filmed three songs in the film, and will be canning the next one on a farmland, spread over 100 acres, near Puducherry. We will also start the climax portion there, and continue it at another location. Almost all the cast members, including Dhanush, Amyra, Mukesh Tiwari and Ashish Vidyarthi, will be joining us during this 15-day schedule."

While the editing work for the portions that have already been shot has been completed, the team is presently busy with dubbing. Anand adds, "While Amyra is tied up with her film with Mahesh Bhatt and Emraan Hashmi, Dhanush is busy with Balki's film with Amitabh Bachchan. So, it's a little difficult to get their combination dates. After a small break, we will mostly be travelling to Scotland in July to shoot another song."

Amudhan turns lyricist for Anegan
The Dhanush-Amyra Dastur-starrer Anegan, directed by KV Anand, which has music by Harris Jayaraj, will now feature a song which has been written by director CS Amudhan, of Tamizh Padam fame. This is the first time that Amudhan will be penning the lyrics for an all-out Tamil song.

Anand confirms, "The song is a peppy number. These days, a lot of IT people take off on the weekends to simply chill out, to places like Pondicherry or Mahabalipuram. We have portrayed a similar situation in the song. The first two lines of the song go — Podhumda Saamy, Nine To Five Porattam, Kaanjupona Chedikku, Thevai Neraiya Neerottam. The focus is on youngsters who like to have fun."

Talking about the song, Amudhan says, "Anand sir chose me to write the song based on my tweets, which border on dry irony. He needed that to come across in the song." Ask him about the challenging part of writing a song and he says, "Writing in meter is not a problem for me since I used to write poetry and my father was a music director. The only apprehension was I did not know if I could come up with the right words. But Anand sir helped me through the entire process."

Amudhan and Anand share a good rapport, right from the days when Anand was an ad filmmaker and Amudhan used to be the creative director of the ad shoots. "We go back a long way and so, when he asked me to write for Anegan, I was thrilled ," says Amudhan. Interestingly, he has also worked with Harris before. "I wrote the Maddy Maddy song from Minnale, but that was entirely in English. This is the first time I am attempting a full-fledged Tamil song," he reveals.

Dhanush recovers from injury; to shoot Anegan climax
It was merely three weeks ago that the climax shooting of KV Anand's Anegan came to a standstill after Dhanush was injured. A source from the set explains how it happened. "About 20 days ago, we were all set to shoot the climax and a song sequence in a particular schedule. However, the climax was a racy stunt sequence and during the process of shooting it, Dhanush injured his leg severely, due to which we had to stop the shoot."

Now, it seems that the team is gearing up to shoot the climax once again. The source adds, "Yes, Dhanush has recovered fully now and will be shooting for the climax of Anegan from Thursday onwards."

Recently, at an audio launch, KV Anand had revealed that Dhanush will be sporting a hairdo similar to Kamal Haasan's from the 80s flickTik Tik Tik. Apparently, there is a portion in the film that happens in 1987 and the director had asked his assistant directors to take reference from Kamal's films of the 80s.

Meanwhile, Dhanush is busy with his Bollywood film Shamitabh, directed by Balki.

MAN OF THE MOMENT: THE KV ANAND INTERVIEW
KV Anand is quite an unusual director. He finds song sequences exhausting, has an endearing “fixation for facts” and thinks Rajinikanth is extremely down-to-earth: because he carries his own umbrella.
KV Anand also has a tale behind every film. And a lot of finicky detailing as well. Ayan’s theme – smuggling, was based on an incident that occurred in his 20s. He had just bought a pair of expensive lens from Singapore and had a harrowing time waiting for clearance at customs. “It struck a chord with me. I kept wondering how drugs were smuggled,” recalls the director. That served as the trigger. He soon found himself researching it methodically; meeting custom officials, retired smugglers and even infamous drug peddling hubs in Chennai. And, Ayan was born. Starring Suriya as a young man who joins a ring of smugglers, the movie was declared a blockbuster in 2009.

Maattran (starring Suriya as conjoined twins) on the other hand, was sparked on a flight to Spain. He was wielding the camera for Sivaji then, and was travelling with director Shankar. And he remembers being intrigued by a story on the National Geographic Channel about Thai Siamese twins, Chang and Eng. For the whole duration of the flight. So soon after landing in Chennai, he set out to meet heart-surgeons Dr Cherian and his son. To learn all about the abnormality; and also to lend realism to the open-heart surgery scene that happens in the film. It is “this fixation with facts”, he declares, that “saves me the embarrassment of getting laughed at”.
But no amount of persuasion would make him divulge the inspiration behind his upcoming Dhanush-starrer Anegan. “…and give away the suspense?” he laughs, “No. perhaps we can discuss this when you have watched the film.” He’s quite willing to discuss at length about his hero, though. Dhanush is a director’s delight, Anand says. He’s a realistic actor who doesn’t need punchlines. “He’s also very secure, so you can mould him in any way.” Anegan also features Karthik Muthuraman, whom the director befriended while assisting PC Sriram for Gopuravaasalile and Amaran. Karthik wasn’t his only choice, though. He was chosen from among a band of actors that included Arvind Swamy and Madhavan. The director is quite picky with villains too; having roped in Mukesh Tiwari and Ashish Vidyarthi for their pan-Indian appeal. But Anegan’s lead actress – Amyra Dastur – Anand declares, will be the “surprise element” in the movie.
A KV Anand flick has three constants: composer Harris Jayaraj, editor Anthony and co-writers Suresh and Bala (Suba). He shares a terrific rapport with Harris, while Anthony, he says, is his alter-ego. Someone who shows him the mirror. “He is my biggest critic. In my second film, we disagreed over many cuts. For Maattraan, when I said I wanted to trim the movie by 10 minutes, he showed me the door,” chuckles Anand. He met Suresh and Bala (novelists in Tamil) during his stint as a photo-journalist with India Today. Oddly, though, Anand never repeats his cinematographers. S Soundararajan would perhaps be the exception – he wielded the camera for Kana Kandein and Maattraan. “To be honest, it never occurred to me till now,” he ponders, “maybe because I get bored easily? A cinematographer is always with the director. You need to see each other all the time. Even when I was behind the camera, I never worked with a director sequentially.” For Anegan though, the director has seen fit to bring in Om Prakash.
Anand loves the “script-writing process”, as he terms it. He has at least five to six drafts, and would never “lock his script”. It is always open to changes, for improvisations on the spot. He would often rephrase dialogues; and sometimes, titles are invented during the drafting process. He would also be on the constant lookout for shorter, crisper titles. He attributes his love for writing to all those reading sessions during his teens; when he would devour thrillers, detective novels and a variety of non-fiction works in Tamil. Janaki Raman and Sujatha are his favourites besides Alex Haley’s Roots.
KV Anand is not too fussed about genres either. “When you invest about Rs 15-20 crores in a film, you don’t bother about genres. You simply call it multi-genre,” observes the director. His whopping budgets are not deliberate, “only because the screenplay demands a broader canvas”. He also finds “song picturisations” exhausting and would rather trade those 30 minutes to do something more productive.Till now, Anand declares, his overseas shoots have never taken place for a lone song sequence, but always for the story. Ko was the “easiest movie to make”, he observes, as it was partly biographical. Having been a photo-journalist, it also saved him a lot of research time. But he still visited newspaper offices to get an idea about deadlines. And the bank robbery scene that was featured in the movie is courtesy his personal experience as a photo-journalist in Madurai. “Of course, my wife was more anxious to know whether there were two women in my life like in the film,” he quips.
Anand also thinks he is a better cameraman than a director; a reason why he sensibly keeps away from cinematography when he directs. “I don’t want to kill it. When the cameraman starts setting up lights, I can use the time to rework my dialogues or make a scene better.” After 14 films as cinematographer, Sivaji being the last, he has bright memories of the period during which he assisted PC Sriram. His tone turns reverential when we talk about his guru. But PC never taught him anything, he says. He just observed him at work; and that was a great learning experience by itself.
“Between 1992 and 2005, PC groomed more cinematographers than Adyar Film Institute ever did – around 20 to 25. AfterThiruda Thiruda, he asked me to start out individually and made sure I didn’t leave empty-handed. He is a big-hearted man.” When Priyadarshan called PC for Thenmavin Kombathu, he was working on May Madham. Santhosh Sivan and Jiva weren’t available as well, so PC recommended his protégé’ for the project.
Thenmavin Kombathu remains Anand’s best experience till date. “For the opening number, the director told me to take 10 bullock carts and 5 cans of Kodak and shoot whatever I wanted. He wanted only 400 scenes. That, for me was a huge boost,” admits the director who won a National Award for his very first film. On reflection, he confides, most of what he is today can be attributed to the trust his guru and his directors had in him. His first Tamil film, Kadhal Desam, was an eye-opener – where he made the switch from 50 lakhs to 4 crores in revenue. He showcased Chennai city in a futuristic mould, at a time when Mc Donald’s and other chains had not set foot in the country. And during Shankar’s Mudhalvan, he learnt cost-cutting and camera-ramping. The Legend of Bhagat Singh also remains fresh in his memory; as it was “intensely emotional”. He remembers crying during the shoot.
A few performances still linger. Like Amitabh Bachchan’s speech at a police station in Khakhee. “After packing up, I was startled to see Amitji sitting there and repeating his dialogues. Probably he was rehearsing for himself.” Kamal Haasan, he says, had astonished him as an actor and producer. While filming Thevarmagan, a scene required 3000 junior artistes. “It was difficult to manipulate images during those times. Director Bharathan was ready to shoot with his tele-lens and just 1500 people, but Kamal brought in the promised number. He didn’t want to make compromises despite knowing the expense.” Anand also has a searing memory of another scene inThevarmagan – when Sivaji Ganesan lies dying, and Kamal walks in. Raaja’s music is playing in background. “PC played it over and over again to set the mood. Everyone single person in that room cried. Except Sivaji. It was a magical moment.” As for Rajinikanth, Anand can’t think of another superstar who is very down to earth; someone who carried his own umbrella.
Anand takes inspiration from Ansel Adams’ works, and is not too fond of digital photography. “You share your work with a lot of people; there’s colour correction, post production, and other work that goes in after shoot.” He doesn’t think a high-end camera brings about better results either. “It’s all instinctive” he says.“Tamil movies are made with cameras ranging between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1 crore. But how many people know the difference? Great cinematography should blend with the story. Like the recentPannaiyarum Padminiyum and Goli Soda.” He is also quite sure that good cinematographers are born, and not made. “Like Ravi Varman who did Ram Leela and Dasavatharam,” he offers, and adds, “a lot of stunning imagery also depends on crafty art directors and costume designers.”
Anand likes to think he has learnt life’s lessons from his directors – who co-incidentally, also happen to be brilliant scriptwriters. “Shankar sir always made the technicians feel like they owned the film. He was a great leader in that respect. And, Mani Ratnam never compromises on quality.”

But the most saintly piece of advice comes from the director himself. “Being a pessimist is helpful,” he nods sternly at us as we part, “as he is more realistic than an optimist.”

KV Anand’s Anegan is scheduled to release this Deepavali.

A typical Harris styled duet in the midst of Hip-Hop rhythm section and safe chord progression. The 80s styled riffs are heard throughout.

A feel good composition with breezy vocals. The usage of electric guitar and Aria solo in the interlude does make an impact.
Verdict: Harris Jeyaraj in his trademark style gives a solid album for Dhanush.

Plus: A very fresh plot,Dhanush,Karthik,Dangamaari and cinematography of Omprakash
Minus: Amyra Dastur, mainly because she struggles to carry the role. Wrong placement of Thoduvaanam song at a crucial juncture. Few silly scenes which take away whatever buildup built prior to those scenes

As a whole, the film is definitely watchable. But I felt somewhere something is missing.

I found Irandaam Ulagam more close to The Fountain. I guess Anegan trailer was cut in a way that people assume something and end up watching something else in the movie. I cant tell more because I may end up posting a spoiler. For now, I can say that its not inspired by The Fountain. :)

Karthik has a good comeback in the film. KVA has used him perfectly. Was refreshing to see him in such a role.

I watched the film with Vijay on the back of my mind, needless to say. It wouldve been a hit/superhit. But i doubt if it would've been a blockbuster like gun or knife.

And am just obsessed with "The Fountain", a film that I really enjoyed watching and delving into...Ippa lan etha paathaalum athlernthu thaan inspiredaanu yosikiraen...Hoping to watch the movie online...It hasn't released here in NY state at all...And happy for Karthik....He along with Prabhu surely fit the category of the most under utilized talents from the 80s. Karthik at least is better. He's been choosy or at least is been offered roles that have some importance. It's been a pain to watch Prabhu carry himself through thankless insipid roles....

And am just obsessed with "The Fountain", a film that I really enjoyed watching and delving into...Ippa lan etha paathaalum athlernthu thaan inspiredaanu yosikiraen...Hoping to watch the movie online...It hasn't released here in NY state at all...And happy for Karthik....He along with Prabhu surely fit the category of the most under utilized talents from the 80s. A psychological romantic fantasy action thriller (yes, u read it right) with plenty of twists and turns through out. The film jumps from genre to genre every now and then and one break for a leak outside will leave you pulling your hair.

Plus: A very fresh plot,Dhanush,Karthik,Dangamaari and cinematography of Omprakash
Minus: Amyra Dastur, mainly because she struggles to carry the role. Wrong placement of Thoduvaanam song at a crucial juncture. Few silly scenes which take away whatever buildup built prior to those scenes

As a whole, the film is definitely watchable. But I felt somewhere something is missing.

Have booked tickets for the weekend. The Vijay connection however minor, is always an added reason. However, Dhanush, the actor is growing leaps and bounds and is such an impressive draw these days.

Just caught it at Rex Singapore. Thought Amyra looks like Nargis Fakhri. Audience went most crazy for Kali intro + song. Screenplay had some commendable twists & turns but a little predictable. Visually might be inferior to I but screenplay and script wins hands down here.

Someone earlier said Dhanush had a easy role. I agree. Shamitabh displayed Dhanush's acting chops significantly better. Karthik was spot on in his performance. Good on KVA to have thought of pulling Karthik in. Amyra is cute, and thankfully not annoyingly so. Did not watch Maattrran so can't compare but definitely better than I.

I think its been 20 years since KV Anand won the national award for cinematography... His father brought a small black and white TV so we (his tenants) could watch the award ceremony live :D He's now given up cinematography but the scenes shot in Myanmar ( was it all just Rangoon ?? ) are the highlights of the movie... the shots are composed so well- they look like poetry by themself..

background research on script and story( SuBa ?? ) , attention to details, casting etc... are all perfect as usual..

All the roles were a cakewalk for Dhanush, not much of a challenge for him, but I was so happy to see Karthik on screen again - what a meaty role for hi... have always beenn his fan since before college days ( donno how many times I've seen Varsham 16)... so delighted to see him at his casanova best.. Amyra suits the role - she's done well but lacks something....dont think she will make any impact in kollywood...

Harris shows his limitations... BGM was not that great (pretty awful ) in some places... songs made up for all that... couldnt hear a word of Dangamari at S2 theyagaraja... the guys in front and back rows were just screaming and whistling through out the Mari-Kalyani episode :D

Felt the movie thoroughly entertaining. K V Anand’s strong script and screenplay is the real winner. The script is complicated but Suba and K V Anand has done a great job of narrating it in a lucid way which only shows their sincerity and dedication. The movie also involves a pain staking research. The detailing is also amazing, During the 1987 episode, a newspaper’s banner was showing the incident of a sri lankan cop attacking Rajiv Gandhi. In the very next scene, when the sales tax officer was taken to hospital in a car, an English daily was shown with the same incident.

It’s not a challenging role for danush and it’s a cake walk for him but Karthik was the one who impressed me a lot. He has got an excellent character and he does 200 percent justice to it. What a talented actor. Hope to see him in many movies and hope this movie would serve as a platform for his re entry. They could have chosen an experience lady lead for the character instead of Amyra. Definitely She looks good and has performed well but kinda gives a feel that she lacks the charisma to carry such a meaty role.

After a long time, good music from Harris. Almost all the songs are likeable and the BGM was OK’ish. As the knots started to unfold, we could quickly guess the villan that’s the only negative I felt but since the story was moving in a rapid pace, it doesn’t matter much. The locations were really great and the first 30 minutes were totally poetic.

Overall, Anegan is an out and out pop corn entertainment and one cannot ask for more. This should be a big win for K V Anand.

Good masala film after a long time. But this SuBa - KV Anand have a penchant for using drug related plot devices as a cause of the root conflict. Ayan had cocaine related to smuggle goods, Maattraan had the whole energy drink fiasco, etc..

Dhanush as usual good, but it's Amrya that surprised me. Never expected a heroine in TC to get a good scope and act as a mouth piece to carry story forward. But it's Karthik that was the best. After "I", am noticing 80-90s yesteryear heroes becoming main villain. New trend in TC in coming films?

But in terms of execution, song placement exhausts a little and Anand needs work on that. Far better than "I" as a psychological thriller.

A movie that could have been great with a more capable hand. Instead it is just good. Slow pacing at place, poor climax and unneeded fight scenes brings the movie down. There was nothing unique about the past lives. All the story has been done 1000s of times before and better. The twist comes out of nowhere you are left with asking all the 5 W's and 1 H. Who? When? Where? Why? What? and How?. You don't get answer for most of it and the answers you do get leaves you with even more questions.

Other than the acting and the subject, the movie has nothing else going for it. It is a good time passer but that's it.

People who says Shankar should learn from K.V. Anand....just no. I believe Shankar could have done way more with the concept.

The movie was a very good movie to watch. Its a dream role for Dhanush, he gets to play different characters, and in all characters he shines through. I was bit sceptic when saw heroine for the first time. How possible is it for girls in chennai to be that white in that sun? She had a meaty role in her debute, further more she is a debutant, so we could watch the movie without linking her to other south movies. Navarasa Nayagan didnt dissapoint, finally I see him in a role that I havent seen him in before, kudos to KV Anand to find apt characters for the movie: Asish Vidyarthu, Mukesh Tiwari, Thalaivaasal Vijay, Aishwarya Devan etc. The director made very good job, he slipped in Maatran but he came back with a bang.

Harris Jeyaraj must be double delighted, two of his movies released within 8 days. The songs are great, esp Dangamaari, the feets are starting to dance in a beat, as soon as the song begin. His BGM is much better in this movie.

I would say this movie is the best movie that has been released this year so far. I hope to watch more tamil movies with different screenplays and different ideas from the directors.

By the way, anyone manage to identify that Rolex model yet?
That is a fake rolex with an open hairspring dial.. which rolex never ever made.. along with the fake louis vuitton belt and hermes hat..

I mean come on, can't the producer afford to spend money on real luxury items to showcase in the movie rather than buy fake replica stuff and risk getting a lawsuit for copyright infringement...??[emoji13]

In the movie sivaji rajinikanth wore a fake watch too but the script claimed it to be a rolex but the watch can't be seen clearly on screen. That's still ok.. but in that very same movie the villian suman wore a real rolex day date president model 18238 or a 18038..[emoji41]
