A Brief Study on the Post-Medieval Paandiyan Empire of South India
The Emergence of the Paandiyan Empire overshadowing the Cholas
The Medieval Pandiyar who ruled the Pandiya Country paying tributes to the imperial Cholas, with the acendence of Maaravarman Sunthara Pandiyan - 1 (A.D.1216-1239) defeated the Cholas after nearly two and a half centuries, and emerged as a powerful ruling dynasty of then South India. But it was with the coming of Sadaiyavarman Sunthara Paandiyan -1 (A.D.1251-1271) on the throne the Pandiyan empire grew in extent to it's maximum with 'complete' defeat of Cholas, with the eastern and western limits being sea and the northern limit being as far as Nellore in present Andhra Pradesh and the Kanyakumari in the south, which continued to remain so also during the period of his son Maaravarman Kulasekara Paandiyan - 1 (A.D.1268-1311).
